[Q] Problem with Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5" battery life. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5" Android Tablet that I purchased around mid December of 2014. Not too long ago, I noticed that the battery life is significantly shorter. I cannot pinpoint when this started, because I wasn't specifically watching for any reduction.
Also, I did do the upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and then a minor upgrade to 5.0.2 about a week or two ago. When I go into the Battery section of the OS section, I noticed that, by far, the screen was using the most power, and the percentage was INCREASING. At about 8:00 in, the morning, the screen was using 20% of the power. But, at about 1:00pm, it was up to 36%--WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN USAGE. As a matter of fact, the tablet was often sitting idle (with the screen locking periodically).
Another thing I noticed while in the Battery section of the OS section was that the full 100% of power consumption is not accounted for--I added up the percentage numbers of everything that was listed as consuming power, and they did not even add up to 50% of total power consumption, So what accounts for the rest of the power consumption?

This happend to me as well with my Tab S 8.1", and the problem causing it was All Cast, even when i didn't use it were running in the backround and used a lot lf battery. When i forces closed it the problem disapeard and i don't have an problem anymore. Mighr not fix your device, as i don't know if you are using All Cast. But, good luck.

[Q]: Battery Usage Tracker?

Hi!
from time to time i get the problem that my galaxy tab 10.1v has around 50% of battery left, and when i want to turn it on a couple of hours later the battery completely drained to 0% !!! i know there's a thread about that in this forum.
to get a hold on this problem, i'm looking for an app which tracks the battery level (e.g. in log-file, a graph...) and maybe even tracks battery usage of applications. the standard android battery usage display isn't detailed enough.
on my mobile, i've got the "current widget", which comes close to my demands. but unfortunately it doesn't seem to run on my honeycomb tablet.
does anyone know such an app which meets my demands? thanks

[Q] Question for S2 owners re: battery

Hello everyone,
A while ago (right at the launch of the S2, total coincidence) I made the transition from a "regular" cell phone to a so-called smartphone.
I took a look at the S2 and liked what I saw, but read absolutely horrible things about the battery (i.e. not being able to get through a day with it). To me, that's not an option as that means I can't rely on it and thereby defeats the purpose of a mobile phone for me.
So I looked elsewhere and got me a Motorla Defy (installed Cyanogenmod 7.1 on it). I'm happy with this phone as the battery usage is okay to me; during the week it easily lasts a whole day to 36 hours with plenty of room to spare (not going to claim a consistent 48 hours, but it could get there every now and then). It gets these easy 36 hours with the following usage pattern:
- Internet connection is always on (it switches automaticly between wifi and mobile internet depening on availability)
- a few widgets (stock quotes) are always on and refresh about once every 5 minutes
- e-mails refresh about every 5 or 10 minutes, not sure, I'd have to check
- usually facebook app is on as well in the background so I get notices when somebody sends me a message
- regular texting during the day
- a few calls every now and then, usually only a few minutes a day
- reading the news online with the browser, not constantly but checking every now and then
- general browser usage while looking for adresses or random info etc
- little to no gaming
A few days ago somebody told me that the battery problems with the S2 had lessened due to new Android updates and such. As my brother needs a new phone I was thinking on giving him mine and getting an S2 myself, if battery quality is any good.
So basicly, my questions:
1) can I expect the same battery durability of the S2 as from my Defy now that the problems are supposed to be fixed
2) can I also put Cyanogenmod on it (as I'm used to this and like it) without any battery problems
Any information or feedback in this regard is much appreciated, thank you.

Battery use is very hard to gauge because the phone doesn't do exactly the same every day. In essence, estimates on battery life are like MPG ratings for cars: different styles and circumstances dictate usage.
Having said that, the less the screen is on, the greater the battery life, in general. If you are not happy with battery life, there is an official 2Ah battery which should yield around 20-30% extra usage.
I don't think SGS2 had any real big battery problems, or at least my set has never had big issues. Pretty much the same battery capacity since I first got mine and now with the newer firmware versions.
At the end of the end it all depends on how heavy you use your phone, how strong WIFI/3G/2G signals you obtain, running apps/widgets etc. Sure, the battery life is not great on SGS2 but it's also no worse than other mobiles with similar screen sizes.
I'm sure you can manage 24h with your usage, if not then you can always later buy the higher capacity battery which Samsung have released. It's slightly thicker but barely noticeable.
i got my s2 about a month ago with 2.3.3, battery was pretty poor at the start, wouldn't last a full day, but with some tweaking, i can now get roughly 2 and a half days use, albeit with light use. currently looking at my juice defender status in notifications, and says phone has been unplugged for 57 hours.
what i did/use.
2.3.5 stock firmware
juice defender ultimate
froze wifi sharing, ap mobile, social hub with Titanium Backup
screen brightness down to about 20%
turn off wifi when not needed
Basicly, what I'm wondering about is whether, given the use above, I could unplug my phone at 6am on friday to go to work, and only have to plug it in again at 8am on saturday with room to spare for any unforseen circumstances
Seems I finally found the question to which no answer can be found on the internet

Bigger battery capacity

Hi all,
I love the Sony Tablet except its battery life. for something that is so huge compared to the others similar products out there, I am sure that they could have squeezed a bigger battery into the unit.
The power capacity is pretty weak. Let's hope that Sony offers a higher capacity battery size. I would gladly pay to upgrade it.
That's weird, my battery life is fantastic. If I play games on it all day it'll last 8-12 hours, but if I just use it intermittently and moderately it'll easily last me a couple of days. On standby it only uses a couple percent a day if that!
I'm the same as unclespoon. Even during heavy use, I get about 9 hours, which is way better than my old Galaxy Tab could ever muster. Standby usage is crazy low, its fantastic!
Not sure what you mean either about being larger than most other devices. The Tablet's 9.4" screen is smaller than almost any other full-size Tab out there (including the iPad) and since the back curves, theres not actually a lot of usable rear space (look at how thin its getting at the thin end, now imagine trying to fit a battery in there!)
I'm not sure you'll find a Tab out there currently with a better combo of size/battery life. The chunkier Toshiba Thrive will last longer, the thinner Galaxy Tab's will last even less, and my Tablet S always outlasts my iPad, so it might just be your device. Try checking Settings -> About -> Battery Use
I'm of the same opinion as the op. My tablet s has dreadful battery life and especially when it isn't doing anything. (50% usage is system standby) my old galaxy 7 was far far better (charged about once a week)
I believe this may just be because it is new (only have 1 full charge) as my galaxy s2 was initially unimpressive and then lasted 3 days of moderate use without charge. Hoping the same will happen to my s1.
Time will tell
My only guess was that you did a shoddy job of conditioning the battery. My old Galaxy Tab (the first 7" one) was hopeless, but when I replaced it, I conditioned the battery better and it was a bit better.
My Tablet S lasts for days and days and the standby usage is tiny. Check whats using your battery in the Battery Use screen and get back to us, we might be able to help..
I noticed advanced wifi lock was causing massive amounts of wakelocks (8 hours out of 10 according to the stats in settings/about).
betterbatterystats is not available via market but I am trying out the XDA APK now

I noticed that as well. If you have Advanced WiFi lock activated the tablet won't go into deep sleep mode, there of massive battery usage. I still have Advanced WiFi lock on my tablet, but only activate it when I need to download/update something that takes time. Otherwise I turn it off. It's not worth the battry drain.
Wow. Your battery life are fantastic. 9 hours? That's huge. I have not used my Sony Tablet till flat but given the rate of battery loss think maybe the most is about 5 hours which is similar to what many reviewers are saying.
Just can't imagine that those reviewers are so far out of the ball park compared to you guys. I am using juice defender Beta. Not to sure if its helping or not. But at least if I not using WiFi it shuts it off automatically.
My battery used to drain badly during standby. I found that the Friend Stream service was preventing the tab from sleeping. Killed the service a while ago and battery has been fantastic since. Pushed it to 3 days with light use. About 3 hrs of browsing and facebook. My battery level is at 68%, been off power for 20h40 mins, and used for about 4hrs today - facebooking, Internet browsing. Note that no specific conditioning was performed.
What are the settings that you have on your Tablet? Auto brightness, background sync turned off ?
how did you stop friendstream, and what the heck is it, did you just kill the process and it stayed dead? (sometimes as u know u kill process but it will come back).
Good question. What is the Android software revision now. My is Android 3.2.1 (revision 2)
I acutally just uninstalled the crap-app. nothing I use anyway. It is an app for facebook, twitter and other social networks. So just get rid of it. Uninstall and be happy
my bad. I confused the HTC name and Sony name.
Social Feed Reader was misbehaving. Once started it kept running... rather than dropping off to sleep (and into Cached Apps).
Something wasn't right so I force stopped it and it stayed dead.
An additional note - the Setup, Applications, Running Applications feature isn't 100%. Some background apps aren't displaying as running or Cached. Go figure.
So any special method to stop the social feed reader?
I'm getting those kinds of numbers on mostly auto brightness (and sometimes lower, at night), with background sync turned on, WiFi sleep policy set to default, and no battery monitoring or saving apps running. The only thing I did was single initial conditioning cycle and since then its been great.
Also note that software-decoded video files will take a lot more of your battery than the equivalent properly encoded file. I havent had any trouble with Social Feed Reader, but I never even set it up and judging by the many stories around here, I would uninstall it if you're worried about battery..

Hi, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately think I screwed up the initial conditioning. so I guess I will have to live with the 5 hour battery of my Tablet.
Btw how do you do battery conditioning?

In Setup, Applications, Running Services have a look at the awake time (listed on the right side) of the running processes. You'll note that system processes (the ones with the Android icon) have been awake since last boot.... but you might finds others that are as well. I noted Social Feed Reader showing high awake time and decided to nuke it. Simply click the offending app. You'll be given the option to stop the app... which is what I did. It's an app so doesn't restart once killed. Hope that helps...
Final thought: at the top right of the screen there's a 'Show cached processes' option.
The could be an offending app in there. Kill any installed app you suspect might be a problem and see if that helps.
my battery life is excellent.

New XTZ == Fast battery drain (5% in 5 min)?

Hi all,
I just purchased a Xperia Tablet Z 32 Gig Wifi (SGP312) and am seeing an amazing amount of battery drain. I was using the kindle app and dropped about 5% battery power (96% to 91%) in about 5 minutes. Being that I just purchased this tablet from Amazon I would like to know if this is normal or if this sounds like it could be a hardware issue? Also, does someone know if the custom roms (e.g. CM10 or CM11) have better battery life?
Thanks!
Dave
Ps. I am running build number 10.4.1.B.0.109

i have a similar problem with the 16gb...which i didnt buy brand new. But i did get the updae from 4.2 to 4.3 when i bought it, and i believe its a
dirty update issue. Im going to wipe/restore it to make sure im running clean...usually fixes things on the Galaxy s3/s4 devices..........
the battery in this tablet is quite a bit smaller than other tablets, the galaxy 10.1 2014 has a 8200mah battery and ours has a 6000mah battery, i bought this tablet having an idea that the battery would be poor and thats what i got.
I generally leave mine plugged in most nights while im on it or it will just run out and not last a whole night.
I have always just seen this as normal for this tablet though.
reflash the firmware. Normally 2% battery loss overnight can be considered great, not 5% in 5 minutes.
Sorry if this doesn't help you but this is what I do and I have at least 7h usage on mine now from a single charge.
First up, if you are rooted try Greenify from app store, it saved a lot for me just doing all none system apps that don't require notifications or autoupdating (widgets).
Next up, drop your screen brightness, I regularly run mine on lowest setting. This isn't an issue as much if you don't mind removing Sony shatter protection on screen as it slightly darkens the screen, please be aware this is designed to stop your screen shattering if you drop it so do it at your own risk. I also use a generic matte screen protector to stop finger prints so you may not have this issue.
If you use custom ROM, most have performance settings, so if you don't use tablet for heavy gaming, you can save a lot of battery here by using power save settings and conservative processor governor. Again be careful with this if you are unsure, don't do it.
Lastly, most modern tablets etc have a fairly significant improvement the more you use it. Always try to run your battery to 10% or under before fully charging, however don't run it flat because you will most likely have issues.
Clean master is another app that helps me too. I turn off all settings except auto clean when screen turned off. Then go to memory boost and hold any apps you need running without being closed and press ignore.
Hope this helps.

VZW Galaxy S4 "krtccd" battery drain

Hello all, I hope I'm posting in the right section.
I've been searching for info on the battery drain problem for some time now. I have used GSam and System Panel to find the culprit and observe it for a while and I think I see what is happening. Don't know if there is anything to be done but I'm hoping there is a fix out there.
Background:
Stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, stock Rom on latest OTA update (screen shot attached)
One morning around Christmas time my phone drained the battery from full to 10% in about 5 hours. I had my phone in my pocket like every other day at work, I had noticed it was heating up as well. I got an error message at some point that morning about some kind of "Samsung Power Share" I had never heard of. Then I could not get the phone to charge unless powered off, and that very slowly; it was the "grey battery" problem. This problem persisted for several days and then turned intermittent then nearly back to normal, though never quite right.
What I've done:
Wipe cache, FDR, replaced USB charge port, replaced stock battery with Anker battery.
The new charge port dramatically improved recharge time and eliminated the grey battery error but I still have terrible battery life compared to earlier in this phone's life, in other words, compared to before the latest OTA which appears to be a disaster. Didn't notice any significant improvement with the new battery.
Here's what I've seen:
As soon as the battery drops below 50% the rate of discharge maxes out and this matches up almost exactly with the activity or CPU usage of the system process "krtccd." (See attached pics showing krtccd activity corresponding with increased battery drain below 50%). GSam shows the "Kernel Android OS" (in which is krtccd) using 50% of the battery where it used to be that the screen was the biggest drain, pic attached.
Is there any way to control "krtccd" as it seems to go rogue? Why does it only seem to go rogue when the battery gets below 50%?
This is a company owned phone so rooting is not an option unfortunately.
Thank you so much for any input you may have!
I apologize if this posted in the wrong part of the forum. I did do a lot of attaching for info on what the krtccd process does and why it changed so drastically with the last OTA update but I can't find much out there or in here. I don't have the option to root phone so am I such with this weird poor performance whenever the battery drops below 50%?
Thanks again, I appreciate any input you guys have.
As a follow-up, here is a screen shot from System Panel this morning showing that "krtccd" stopped activity as soon as the battery began to charge. I don't get it, it's like it spins full bore in the background sabotaging the battery for the last 50%.
BTW, the discharge last night (in my first set of screen shots) happened while the phone dat idle on my windowsill, don't think I even turned the screen on during that whole time as I was in discussion with a friend. It's weird...
Rooted Galaxy S4 (Sprint)
Same issue. Can anyone provide any information on what this process does?
Someone opened an issue report with android open source.
