[Q] S3+Paranoid Android 5.1 bootloop - Can't access recovery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have a Galaxy S3 that was working normally for a few weeks with one of the latest Paranoid Android 5.1 builds, Boeffla kernel and TWRP recovery. Today I powered the device down and since then I am stuck in a strange bootloop, what happens is the following:
1. The device powers on as soon as I place the battery on the device, NO power on button required (when problems started battery was at about 45%).
2. If left alone it infinitely loops the "Samsung Galaxy S3 I900" screen
3. Volume Up+Home+Power if looped twice gives me the TWRP screen but the phone instantly reboots so the menu is effectively inaccessible
4. Volume Down+Home+Power enters download mode but at this point Vol Up or Vol Down commands are non-responsive, USB connection and Odin doesn't work AND the device restarts after 3-5 seconds on that screen, so I can't flash anything at the moment (Latest USB drivers installed)
5. If steps 3 or 4 are attempted when phone is connected by USB cable to laptop then the device infinitely loops the charging battery icon but it looks like it is not charging i.e. no charging animation at this point.
6. If I connect the device to power plug WITHOUT battery and replace battery when connected, then the device does not auto-start as per point 1. Power button for 5-10 seconds throws me to battery icon and halts
7. Device to power -> no battery -> attach battery -> Vol up + home + power leads to halted battery icon
8. Device to power -> no battery -> attach battery -> Vol down + home + power leads to download mode that auto-restarts after a few seconds as per point 4
I would greatly appreciate any help at this point as I am out of ideas and out of ways to search google in a meaningful way, all info I can find does not apply as I can not access TWRP or download mode.
Thank you very much

Ok

Perhaps a messed power button? You can remove the outer plastic for trial.

the power button feels ok, obviously I have no way of confirming that but it is certainly not stuck-in, i.e. i can feel it clicking when pushing it and it doesn't remain pushed in when released. all steps mentioned in my original post were tried without the back plastic on as I needed to hot-swap the battery for some of the steps. thank you very much for your input though

Your power button is faulty, if it powers on when you insert the battery then it's shorted out.

How can I get "Download mode" Samsung vibrant

it's dead plzzz help me to fix it
Are u referring to the market? if so... while on market page..press the menu button.
No. Download mode... hold volume down and boot it up, just hold down both until it pops up.
Why is it that there are like 4 different ways posted of how to boot into Download mode on each of the download mode threads but none of them work for me? Is it because I'm retarded and missing something simple or is this phone really that touchy to boot into download mode?
Can someone either post a very detailed account of how to boot the phone into Download mode or post a picture as proof that you have reached download mode successfully so I can at least know what it is supposed to look like should I ever make it there. Prob a good thing I havent made it there yet as I'd just end up flashing the wrong rom and mess up my phone, but it is just really bugging me that people have been posting about this, yet none of the methods in the posts have worked for me.
So far I've tried vol up+pow, vol down+pow, and vol up/down+pow with usb plugged in....Vol up+pow from the phone being fully booted and all the other combinations from recovery and the charging battery screen. What am I missing? Thanks to anyone who can point out my retardation, should it be my fault that it is not working for me.
I have recorded a video for my problem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYLI8gUN3S4
I was able to root my Vibrant following the thread in here... u gotta hold down BOTH the volume up and down keys AND the power key.... it worked... ( use ur right hand...three fingers to make sure u do it right)
thank you
I tried these
Hold down; {volume both UP and DOWN + Power }
Hold down; {volume both UP and DOWN + Power } + plug in USB
Hold down; {volume DOWN + Power } = Recovery mode
Hold down; {volume UP + Power } = upload mode !
I tried more than 5 millions times what can i do
are there a ways open the internal SDcard then put update.zip and use recovery mode instead download mode ?
I had this same problem also the first day I got my phone...I installed an update.zip that caused the phone not to boot, and for the life of me could not get it into download mode to flash with odiin3. I read all the download mode post, so I thought maybe it was whatever I installed in the update.zip that cuased the button layout to change and thats why I couldn't figure it out. But I returned the phone...and now I still cannot get the phone into download mode.
To my understanding holding vol up+down and then hitting power sends you into recovery, which is totally different from download mode...So can someone clear this up...is the same screen displayed for download and recovery, just with different modes activated on the phone, or do they both show different pictures? Also again...I have still not reached download mode...so if you have a detailed account of how to do such...please post it...
Thanks.
Adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
Do that while in recovery...
Also, I if vol down and power don't work try vol up because you may have flashes a European updated and their buttons are different. For me if flipped the volume buttons.
Oh, and hold the buttons through two cycles seems to help me

Ok, I made a sh**ty video just now, uploading to youtube...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9LYLoK1Qog
EDIT: The video isn't the best, the camera apparently didn't like the screen much and the lighting is bad but I think it gets the point across... Sorry for being so monotone...
I tried to open internal;Sdcard but I couldn't iconsider that is the solution
I need to give an authorization to do this like : Mount from the notification menu to open the internal sdcard
I wrote some commands by run so appear to me; permission denied
iam so sad
iam going to go to t-mobile store they might solve my problem

Just rooting isnt that dangerous... it was the fact that it was the wrong firmware, not just that you flashed the firmware. Either way it's your choice and if you are happy with that more power to you, but the risk of doing anything with the rooting process is pretty low.
I've had good repeatable luck getting into download mode as follows:
1. Power down phone with no USB cable connected.
2. Once you see "good bye" connect USB cable.
3. Wait till battery indicator is visible, and you can see the current charge in green.
4. Hold vol+ and vol-.
5. Press power until screen goes black, then let go of power only.
6. Should see the yellow digger.
Again, your mileage may vary.

I can not thank you enough for this. Although I just took the battery out instead of powering down. So it appears the key is to making sure the battery indicator is on, and that you release the power button as soon as the screen goes black. I tried so many other combinations...even holding the power button past the screen turning black, but I got this on first try.
Thanks!
If you've got ADB setup just do 'adb reboot recovery'...
Is there a differnence between download mode and recovery mode?

[Q] galaxy tab2 10.1 wont enter download mode

I have new galaxy tab 10.1 which I am planning to root, however I cannot get unit to enter download mode. I have tried unsuccessfully at least 20 times using the recommended method of turning the unit completely off then holding the vol-/power buttons. I press the vol- slightly ahead of the power button and hold. All I get is the samsung splash looping over and over with no download or recovery menu icons popping up after the samsung splash. Once I let go, the tab will go into android recovery mode with the option to reboot which takes me to where I started. I have followed all of the tutorials to the tee. Is there another way to get to download mode? Should I take it back if this indicates a more serious problem.
I have also done a factory wipe/reset to no avail. Will vol+ / power do anything?
thanks for your interest I would appreciate any help.

I seem to recall that at least one variant swapped the button around. In any case, it can't hurt to try volume up.
Here's what you do - first, shut the device off by holding power down and waiting for the confirmation.
Then, when it's off, hold the volume down button (to the left side, next to the power button.) Holding that down, press and hold the power button. When you see it light up, release the power button but continue to hold volume down until you see the recovery/download icons.
If doing that doesn't work, try volume up and power. Good luck!
Ill try your suggestions. thank you

I'm having a similar problem. I have a galaxy tab 10.1 wifi that I rooted immediately when I got it. I havn't used it in about 4-5 months. I've already done all the odin and download stuff, but now i want to update my cwm and install a JB rom (I'm currently using aokp). I'm having a funny problem with it now -- Its difficult to turn on and impossible to get into download mode.
In order to turn on my tab, I have to hold down the power, connect the charging cable and get the download screen to turn on, then hold down the power again, wait for the screen to turn off, unplug the power and hold the power button until hopefully it turns on again. And this doesn't always work, sometimes I have to do it a few times. But whenever i've tried do the same thing that gets the tab working normally -- only holding the down volume as well as the power, Nothing happens.
Now once its on and working, things work great, but turning it on is a pain and its impossible for me to bring up the download or recovery option.
I've also tried to 'reboot to bootloader' and that doesn't work, although i can still 'reboot to recovery'
Any tips?

I have almost the exact same problem...
Volume up puts me into download mode and i can connect with Kies but it wont do the JB update
Voulume down ... nothing just boots
if i let it try to do the OTA update it will freeze at the boot screen and stay that way till the battery dies.
To get it to work again i have to do almost exactly what was decribe above..
I have no recovery options at all.
also my Tab is "NOT" rooted

I had a similar problem initially... the screen would just flash the "downloading" message, but the tablet wouldn't mount/connect to my laptop. Here's the solution:
1) launch odin
2) connect usb cable to laptop only
3) power down tablet
4) hold down the power volume down buttons together
5) when you see the downloading message, let go of the power button
6) let go of the volume down button (now just displays "downloading" message, but nothing happens
7) press volume UP
8) you'll get a message about installing custom ROMs and be given the option to do so by pressing volume UP again
9) the tablet mounts and connects to odin
10) from there follow the instructions for flashing recovery via odin (i.e., using PDA button...)
FYI just double check the guides again regarding download and recovery modes. In the thread title you mention Tab 2. This is the forum for the original Tab not the Tab 2. Both devices have different methods and key presses to access the various modes.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT-P5110 : won't turn on & won't charge

Hey guys,
I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 GT-P5110 that won't turn and still gets detected by my computer when the buttons combination of Power button + Volume up + Volume down is maintained for a brief moment, but unfortunately it is not recognized by my PC.
What could have caused the issue
The person who used the tablet have that habit of using it until the battery is totally drained (until it shuts down automatically)
After the tablet got stuck with the boot logo, i was called to fix it . I used Odin to flash the stock ROM and to be honest it did work the first time and it did get back as normal. It started giving no sign of life when i performed a second flash which failed due to the USB disconnection that occurred during Odin's progress.
What i have tried so far
Button combinations :
Power => Nothing
Power + Vol Up => Nothing
Power + Vol Down => Nothing (supposed to get me to the download mode)
Power + Vol Up + Vol Down => Gets detected as a USB connected device, but not recognized (hearing the sound of connected/disconnected USB looping)
Disassembling :
I have disconnected the battery plug from the motherboard for 30 minutes => Nothing
Made sure that every connector gets unplugged and put back perfectly => Nothing
Bought a new battery from Amazon and plugged it => Nothing changed
My conclusion is that i have unintentionally soft/hard-bricked the tablet.
That's where my knowledge reach it's limits and bends to you, seeking your help.
I hope that i made it clear enough.
Thank you for your help and your time !

Z2 Tablet not booting after Magisk install

So thanks to Netflix and its implementation of security net I wanted to install Magisk on my Z2.
Im running the stock 6.0 Rom which was just rooted with supersu.
My tab was charged 80+%
I uninstalled SuperSU, went to TWRP and flashed Magisk.
After flashing the screen stayed black. Nothing at all.
Long press power gives me one vibration after 3 seconds but nothing else.
Long press power & vol - gives me the same vibration
Long press power & vol + gives me nothing
Connecting the tab to the computer gives me nothing. No device recognised (no adb, no fastboot)
Connecting the tab to a charger has the LED blinking red.
Long pressing power makes the led turn solid (no blinking)
Power & vol - the same
Power & vol + nothing
Basically I seemed to somehow have turned my tab into a brick oO
I can't even get it to boot to twrp or fastboot
Atm I'm letting it charge just to see if that was an issue (I doubt it)
Otherwise the only thing I can think of is opening it and disconnecting the battery...maybe that will help?
Ok nevermind. I managed to get into flashmode and reflash. tab is now working again!
How did you get it to be recognized and reflash? I flashed mine after rooting and I get similar behavior to what you were getting. It will vibrate once if I press the power button, I can get it to turn the light blue if I hold the up volume and the power button while plugged in. The screen will not turn on at the Emma tool doesn't seem to recognize it.
Same Problem here.
@pseudoheld could you please provide some more info?

Question How to save a black brick

I tried to root my phone by magisk.
After flashing a patched boot.img, it's failed to boot into system and I got a message that "the device need factory reset". I clicked yes and everything seems ok,I can boot into system. Then I tried to flash img again. So I boot into bootloader. Unfortunately, this time I got a black screen. The phone doesn't response me anymore.
I tried the software repair in xperia companion but It cannot dected my phone when I hold on volume down and plugged in it. I also tried hold on volume up + power but nothing happened. Hold on power key also no response. The led light always black, only become red when I connect it to my pc.
What should I so now and what's my phone's status? I searched something about 9008 mode and edl but I don't know how to check whether my phone is really turn into that status, my pc cannot dect my phone.
Have the same problem, only with the 5 iii instead. Still looking for a fix.
Try to switch the phone off; then just plug it into your PC without holding the Vol- key. It has happenned a couple of times with me that the phone does not want to boot up, with attempts to get it into FLASH mode by holding the key down throwing more confusion into the mix.
I think there is a low battery protection. Make sure the phone is charged up. Keeps the device from death during a flash.
Red led mean a very low battery. Keep it plugged (not to PC but to power adapter) for 2-3 hours and then try again a force reset.
Never, never try flash or other stuff under 50% battery
Also force restart is keep pressed vol+ and power button (or vol- and power button) till you fell a vibration.
Try this after a good charge

It might require experimenting with service modes and different chargers. I had an early Xperia 1 III that bootlooped while charging after setting up the fingerprint reader. It seems that charging is disabled during booting. It has to finish or enter a service/fault mode.
my phone is having this after doing fastboot --slot=b reboot recovery (which actually I had to do fastboot --set-slot=b and then fastboot reboot recovery). the notification light blinks red. have tried vol up + power, vol down + power, and vol up + down + power for like 30 seconds and nothing

I feel sorry for you brother...such a nice device...OK let's talk what happened, the state now your device is in is called hardbrick and it had a corrupted bootloader or no boot loader, but your device is still alive, in your PC in device manager it lists as Qs USB mode with some number after it like qsusb9008...now this device can only be brought to life with the help of a blankflash file which can flash your boot loader in snapdragon service mode...actually no snapdragon can be hardbricked permanently now you need appropriate blankflash file for your device.. Please don't open the device if some repairmen suggests to do JTAG nothing is necessary all you need is blankflash file which is shared to only Sony testers groups.... Who tests ROMs before release and they hardbrick so they share those files to them.... Please don't loose hope....it takes time but certainly it can be bought back to life... And dont try any flashing utility as there is no functional boot loader on it now and nothing will work...Sony won't provide that for sure and they will say then can only solve by mother board replacement ,don't believe therm your device is perfect it only needs blankflash file as it entered into final safe mode... I ain't regular on XDA if you need any info contact me via my mail [email protected] g ma I'll .com
Have any of you tried this - https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/flash-tool/download-flash-tool/
ok in my case it was the charging IC
