[Q]Buying t-mobile s5 to use on AT&T, What to look for - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I want to get a t-mobile s5 to use on att and I want to have root access. So from what I have read, root is not an issue with this phone and the worst case is I have to flash a lower version firmware/bootloader. Then from there I could upgrade it to any version I wanted. After its rooted I was planning on using gsmzambia to usb unlock it. Is there anything that I have missed or should look at before buying a phone? Just want to make sure I don't get stuck with a phone I cant use. I just got rid of a 5.0 att s5 because I couldn't root it, so i'm a little cautious right now, lol.

I thinking of doing the same thing. Least expensive place I can find is retail store and just buy a prepaid version. I would use cellunlocker. Not sure if I can post the link or not. Would it not work? It is less.

You can root the AT&T s5, you just can't unlock the bootloader. But that's neither here nor there.
You will be able to use a T-mobile s5 on AT&T, no problem. I did a small thread on what you will need to do once you have it unlocked and rooted. You can find that thread at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help/tips-using-g900t-att-t2975336 .
This includes setting up the APN properly, what Tmobile apps you need to turn off or freeze, etc.

It is my understanding you cannot root AT&T s5, sm-g900a, that came with 5.0. If you can, where are the instructions? I have searched for hours! I too am ready to ditch this phone because I cannot hear on it without a volume booster (and for other tweaks), and I do know about the setting that will let you adjust the volume once in a call.
Thank you for the how to set up T-Mobile phone for AT&T.

If u get a T-Mobile s5, g900t, all you have to look for is to make sure it isn't running the of6 ota update. From what I read, downgrade is not possible if taken. I can't confirm 100 percent but this is only major thing to look for.
I have a g900t and am on ATT. I previously was like you, stuck with a g900a that was unrootable. Glad I switched.

I have tried to download the G900TTMB1ANE5_TMB.ZIP 4.2.2 file from sammobile several times so I can downgrade when I get this phone, and it keeps failing. Unless I can find an untouched version anyway else, I guess I am out of luck.
I can downgrade the T-Mobile if it is on 5.0 or less, right, using Odin?

I just bought a T mobile branded phone from Craigslist. I asked the person to look at there settings and tell me the version model and baseband. Once i found what i was looking for a bought it. I paid 250 for it and had them meet me at T mobile to verify every thing and get it sim unlocked. I am on it now using it with AT&T running TMS3.0 and KT kernel. Used phones are not as bad as some people think. There are a lot of people out there that don't even know what rooting is and they want a new phone every time a different one comes out. The one i bought is flawless and works great.

T mobile firmware update?

Before I start I should probably say straight away that I have scoured the forums for this and haven't found anything enlightening, though I have seen a few people have the same problem.
Anyway, I have a GS3 and I'm on t-mobile (UK). I noticed that my phone doesn't have an option to "check for updates" under settings > about phone as others do, which is odd, but other posts from people have informed me that some t-mobile (and orange too?) locked handsets have had this option removed for whatever reason. So this is a bit annoying, but I'm over it.
The problem is that I want to update to the latest firmware (XXBLFB or something) and the absence of this button means I can't check for updates. So I plug my phone into Kies, and Kies doesn't think there's an update available either. So I'm just wondering whether anyone else on t-mobile has received the update at all - via kies or via OTA?
I realise that xda isn't the best place to ask this as most people on this forum will just flash the latest firmware using odin, but I'm not prepared to do that at the moment!
I dont think all carriers release new updates at the same time.
So its just a waiting game. Unless u step up to kies big brother odin

Did you get the phone from a T Mobile store, or CPW, or Phones4U? If it's T Mobile, they can be a bit slow. CPW and P4U are generally open fw as the phones are unlocked.
oops should have read all of it sorry.
I'm on T mobile but my phone's unlocked (CPW).
Have you tried connecting it to Kies? Does it say anything about firmware?
Why don't you just flash the United kingdom unbranded version of xxblfb(BTU). I'm with t-mobile and that's what i did. The advantage is it doesn't come with all the bloatware and you'll probably have a better chance of getting the latest updates quicker via kies.

Yeah, when I connect to Kies it says I have the latest firmware, so I'm assuming that t-mobile just haven't decided to roll their version of the firmware out yet. It just seemed strange to me since other networks seem to have got the update quite a while ago and it's not even that big an update - with the jump from gingerbread to ICS on the galaxy S2, the gap was only a couple of weeks between networks.

Yeah I am considering it, but to be honest odin scares me a bit! Does the t-mobile version have much in the way of bloatware? I was pleasantly surprised, apart from being locked to t-mobile I couldn't find a single bit of t-mobile branding, not even the startup screen!
I'm also worried that if I flash to an unbranded version then should something go wrong with the phone and I need to replace it, I won't be able to get the t-mobile branded firmware back which might cause warranty issues?
Id hold out for official jelly bean.

Personally I think Odin is safer than kies but I'm only saying that because I've had a couple of problems with botched upgrades via kies and I feel Odin is more secure. Sorry.. just remembered I bought my phone SIM free as I wasn't due an upgrade from t-mobile for another year but from what I recall with the s2 it came with a load of bloatware. I got the before mentioned firmware update via kies about a week after the phone arriving which was relatively quick considering some other networks still haven't released their version. You could always download the t-mobile firmware from Sam mobile and keep it as a back up but really it's entirely up to you as I wouldn't want to be responsible for jeopardizing your warranty mate.

Using Verizon GN2 on T-Mobile....Can I root and flash ROMS

So I got a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 from my sister, and she already had it working with T-Mobile. So it's been working fine, but I am wondering, can I root and flash ROM's? If so is there a special way to do this so I can use this phone for T-Mobile( actually a Walmart service called Family Mobile powered by T-Mobile) and isn't there a 4.3 update? And if so I can't update cause when I check for one it says no service
Nope. You can't swap ROMS among carriers, unless you want a $600 paperweight

If your using a Verizon phone on T mobile your phone is already unlocked and probably already has a custom rom since it will not update. FYI do not try to do the OTA update! What Android version do you have?
Check to see if you have already have a custom recovery.
Volume up, home button then hold power button until it gets past the Samsung logo and find out what recovery your phone currently has? You could already be way ahead of the game to install different Roms

I have the tracfone version of Treasure. Still no root I haven't followed K7 thread in a while. I think they don't have a stable root either. I don't know what to buy anymore. Locked bootloaders, locked "unlocked" verizon LTE GSM bands, unrootable. I'll have to look for 2012-2014 phones when things used to be easy and fun.

Yeah TF will only provide and unlock code if the devices shows 12 months . and they call it pre-paid ha..........
and as far as the primier l62vl sister unit goes, also unrootable it seems. i started with the treasure and took it back for primier. this is deplorable. unrootable? locked bootloaders? i had no idea i would run into this ... when my galaxy S4 caught on fire in the break room at work... i saw that display, and read the specs, and for a hundred bucks.. senses 10 points on touch display... HD also... i thought what a deal. no. i am giving this to my daughter Olivia for her 9th birthday. unrootable?? nothing i want. time to just save for that S7 or Note... Samsung... im coming home baby. OK honestly and seriously, will this ever become rootable? should i leave Straight talk? i love root.. all things root you could say (i know i should not say that here... but were are all friends no?) help
I have given up on the lg L52VL and like my friend above will pass it to my daugher. Never again will i purchase a TracFone Branded device, I'll keep using the straighttalk service as it's the best deal for my area, But from now on it's purchase unlocked phone and BYOP with straight Talk , What saddens me the most is with all the brain power in the Android Community no one but no one can break tracfones strangle hold on it's devices. I ran in to the same thing with the Moto E Xt830C which now lays in a drawer collecting dust. I guess when enough people get fed up with tracfone and it's locking of prepaid devices and stop shopping at walmart for phones maybe we'll see a change but i wont hold my breath.

I'm sure it will become root able. At some point someone that knows what they are doing will figure it out. I wouldn't leave straight talk just because there is no dev. support for this phone. I have a galaxy grand prime through straight talk and have it rooted with supersu and am now doing testing on a kernel and rom so it's not just straight talk. If you really want a phone to take root you must be proactive about it, post in forums, or just figure it out yourself. Lots of developers out there, just got to find the right ones. I'm no longer using the phone but still have it. Have been trying to learn most of this stuff so I can make a program that can unlock the bootloader but I also have a job so it's not looking like something that will be completed for a long time.

Sprint-those who ordered the unlocked version from samsung

Are you able to activate it?
So I got my unlocked version from samsung and tried to activate through sprint with the sim card from my s7edge and they are telling me I need to purchase a new sim because this one isn't compatible
What gives?
Had to do the same thing with my S8+ coming from S7 edge. Quick trip to Sprint store with your new phone in hand and they will give you the Sim card and activate it. You probably will not be charged either. I didn't and I bought my S8 from Best buy.

We can flash stock software's just like the S8 and S8+ with odin...they are signed....to mix parts of the software they used a different version of Odin,
I was just seeing if anyone is going to try right away...
So i am in NYC and called /stopped by stores and none have the note 8 or sim cards for it.
Sprint is supposedly overnighting the cards to me. so I have a phone that can't active since no sim .

I had the same problem trying to use my s7e sim. Thanks to a user on reddit I found a solution. You need a new sim. The sim fro the s8 and s8+ will work for the Note 8. Here is the sim info.
SKU: CZ4114LWQ
UPC: 854798005125
Part: SIMOLW416Q
Model: ISIM V2
I had to go to 3 different corporate stores before I found one that carried it.
can someone be specific in any of the missing features or functionality of the unlocked phone when using on Sprint's network?..
my carrier phone order from 8/29 is still stuck in pre order. a big reason I had ordered carrier was to not get stuck waiting and because I assumed the unlocked phone would not operate as well as the carrier phone on sprints network. so, how does it work?
I've had unlocked phones on sprint before. The only big thing I've noticed that's missing is the sprint free wifi calling functionality (it doesn't work very well, so I never use it), and their wifi security app. Everything else is good.
I just ordered an unlocked note 8 (note 7 promotion). My reason for unlocked is I find they hold their resale much better then the carrier specific phones.
Unlocked version:
Hotspot - Awesome
Download Booster - Awesome
No Bloat - Awesome
Wi-Fi Calling - working awesomely
Sprint Version:
LTE Calling - I might miss, might be worth flashing Sprint mod when available...

Is the SM-N950U a T-Mobile phone or just a carrier-less unlocked phone?

Hi everyone. It's been a minute since I've been here. I currently have a T-Mobile Note 3 rooted with a custom ROM (yikes...I know) that I only use for work since it's pretty freaking tough. I also have a T-mobile Note 4 that I use for when I'm not at work...also rooted with a custom ROM. Both are still going with not apparent issues but obviously they are becoming obsolete. I would like to "upgrade " to a Note 8 (T-Mobile) which eventually I'll be back here to see what great minds have accomplished for it, but as I'm looking online for purchase I get hit with different model numbers when searching for it. I doubt SM-N950T is a legit one but I see phones on sale with that description. I know for a fact the "true" model number from Samsung is SM-N950UZKATMB. Now I mostly see SM-N950U (or U1) for sale. Is that the correct (short version) of the model number for the T-Mobile version or is like the title says? If not then what is the correct one... and lets say if I do get a SM-N950U what would be the limitations of using it with T-Mobile? Difference between U and U1? Sorry I searched but I feel I would get the best answer here. Thank you very much for everyone's time!

U = Carrier branded full of bloatware whether it's AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile it doesn't matter the phone will select the correct carrier based on the sim card you put in there.. U1 = No carrier bloatware.. The N950U and U1 are not exactly made for roms and mods and such because the bootloader cannot be unlocked in neither version.. If you have T-Mobile and you want to root and do roms and mods your best bet is to get the international N950F version since the bootloader can be unlocked but I suggest if you go this route that you do a lot of research and reading and don't do what others keep doing like deleting their /efs folder and not having the original backup thereby screwing themselves and making the phone a paperweight! Just do your research and you'll be fine!

Thank you for the reply! So the U versions are gonna be the same headaches as my daughters S7E. I read that the Exynos and Snapdragon are fairly even and since I don't really use my phones for gaming then I should be good with the Exynos version. Questions though since I've never had an international model...do they allow use of T-Mobile wifi calling or do they limit any (usable) feature that you would get with the U version (besides useless bloatware)? Again, thank you.

They're the same old headaches both the U and U1 and your last questions I don't know since I don't have T-Mobile but I would assume that with root access you can do anything you want but I wouldn't count on wifi calling working unless you have their bloatware versions..
