Is there an ultimate step-by-step to root & get GAPPs working for the Fire HD 6? - Fire HD 6 and 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the knowledge of the Kindle Fire HD 6 to a point where it is a turnkey process? I've browsed through all of the threads and it seems like if you pieced them all together properly, you'd be able to go from "out of the box" to a working Kindle with Google Play. That's my goal. I know there's always a risk, and I'm good with that. But I'm wanting to get this going in the next 45 days for a gift for someone.
Kindle Fire HD 6
4.5.4 (It updated by itself--I've disabled OTA since then with Debloater)
ADB and Fastboot installed
Computer communicating with the Kindle a-okay
I apologize if this is considered a duplicate post. I've looked all over this forum and done a lot of research on it. It just seems that if everything was pulled together just right, all of the steps are there.
Thanks!

Sure, you have all the steps in here :

With 4.5.4, it won't be as easy, since you'll have to go 5.2.0 first, and then back to 4.5.3
In the process, you may have to learn more Android than you ever wanted

LOL . . . well, yes, you can go from out-of-the-box to OS 4.5.4 rooted with fully working Gapps. I would hardly call it turnkey, though.
The Fire HDs were rooted only 2 months ago. A lot has been accomplished. Because different people work on different aspects of development and learning about the device, and often leave after accomplishing what they set out to do, information is necessarily scattered. As a tech writer I'd like nothing more than to see a definitive guide to rooting this device. Pulling together such a guide would involve stepping on toes, however, rewriting other people's work. And the guide would be outdated almost immediately because every week we learn something new. If you're a knowledgeable modder, perhaps you could participate and contribute for awhile.
I think this is what you're looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/root-v2-0-fireos-4-5-4-gapps-t3150613
Note and tip: Rooting a Fire HD and installing everything you need is not straight-forward. If you lose the device at sideload during the upgrade/downgrade process, look at post #50.

Thank you @bibikalka and @DoLooper. I'll inspect this thread more closely. When I'm comfortable with it, I'll take the dive.
On another note, I have another Kindle Fire HD 6 still unopened. Does anyone need a clean "image" of it or anything else you can only get from a brand new device? I'm sure it's going to be on 4.5.3. Please provide me with instructions if there is anything you do need. Thanks!

[Q] [ROOT] Vizio VTAB 1008?

I'm at a loss as to why development hasn't begun on rooting the Vizio tablet.
There have been a few hints thrown out by Vizio techs that rooting involves an sdcard.
Thoughts?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Anyone in the dev community have one of these yet? I'm considering trying to root it myself but I'm still learning.
What has been required of rooting past devices?
Its been suggested that Gingerbreak and other conventional root methods have failed due to the odd internal memory/SD card directories..
Thoughts?
How do we get a dev or two interested in this device?
I also do not understand why the Vizio hasn't received more 'root' attention. Perhaps it is too recently released, perhaps the experts are busy working elsewhere, or maybe Honeycomb has enthralled the hackers leaving us wee Gingerbread users to fend for ourselves. Like your message suggests, it may be up to us neophytes.
I know Unix/Linux reasonably well enough, though I have no immediate knowledge of how to hack for root. So, I am also trying to learn what is needed. The crux of rooting is to find a method to get a process 'suid', a.k.a. root privilege. Once that is achieved the OS is rooted and sustained rooting can be done. At least that's my take on the process at the moment.
I have adb (Android Debug Bridge) working on my Win7/64 system. I've tried Gingerbreak-v1.20 and SuperOneClick-v2.1.1 with no success. So now it's a race between me and Vizio. Do I/we crack the OS or does Vizio bring out the Honeycomb version of Android for the VTAB1008?

I am guessing that vizio is probably throwing in the towel today as Amazon just ate their lunch. A $200 tablet that smokes our Vizios in every way imaginable.
The dev community will probably jump on the Amazon tablet as fast as possible, and pretty much everything else is toast.

Holy crap. Its dual core. I just looked it up.
Gonna preorder tonight. I'm still within my Vizio return period!
I just preordered a Kindle Fire.
I'm on the fence about returning my VTab. If it gets rooted, I'll be inclined to keep it.

*snort* Yeah, right.
Even were that true: The "dev community" is not the whole of the Android, much less the tablet, world. This may come as a shock: But some people actually just use their devices as-delivered, other than to install apps and add some hardware accessories.
Sorry if I'm coming across kinda harsh on my first post here, but breathless hyperbole seems to me better-suited to an American Idol or Big Brother web site, or perhaps a marketing or stock-trading forum, than to a development venue.

Wow, I ASSumed the Fire would have simple stuff like that.
Well, that explains the price. Why bother with a dual core proc and no supplemental features, like Bluetooth!!!

Not even in the same class. It's designed to be a Nook-killer.
I like Amazon well enough. Other than their free shipping has turned very lame, I've always been satisfied with them in every respect. But their overwhelming market dominance I think is bad juju, so my VTAB has only Nook installed, and I'll henceforth go first to B&N for my reading purchases.

I am aware of both that thread and the one regarding booting into recovery.
Both of which are grassroots attempts by folks such as myself to obtain root. I applaud their efforts and wish them success.
That said Jim, my desire is to see interest in this device from well established platform developers, such as the Cyanogen Mod team.

As soon as someone comes up with a way to reconfig the file structure of the SD card to /sd from /sd external or whatever abomination Vizio came up with, conventional root methods will succeed. At least that's my prediction.
I'm too much of a newb to know how to alter the /sd card file structure.
I just installed and PATH'd ADB 5 minutes ago.

Has someone found a work around with that device yet that could help here???
This is from the Iconia A100 subforum on acertablet
Would this work with the VTab??
http://www.acertabletforum.com/foru...ssion/1167-rooting-iconia-a100-made-easy.html
Rooting Iconia A100 Made Easy
This is a method to root the Acer Iconia A100, as presently neither Gingerbreak, nor IconiaRoot 1.3 (or earlier versions) work. I used terminal (app from market, any will do), and performed the procedure below.
What you need:
A copy of superuser, bin file, NOT .apk...
http://downloads.androidsu.com/super...bin-signed.zip
Place this file in the root of INTERNAL SD (mnt/sdcard, not external SD), and unzip it into this same directory. Still at root, /mnt/sdcard, locate and click 'system' folder, then 'bin' folder, and copy the su file. Nav back to sdcard root (mnt/sdcard), and paste su file.
Busybox Installer (.apk from market)
Superuser (.apk from market) This will update the su file and install the Superuser app after rooting.
Titanium Backup (.apk from market) or ANY application for root, to check and ensure you are indeed rooted.
With the su file loaded to internal sd's root, open terminal.
Copy/Paste the following commands at the $ prompt:
/system/bin/cmdclient ec_micswitch '`mount -o remount,rw /system`'
/system/bin/cmdclient ec_micswitch '`cat /mnt/sdcard/su >/system/xbin/su`'
/system/bin/cmdclient ec_micswitch '`chmod 6755 /system/xbin/su`'
Once completed, install and open Busybox Installer.apk, and run the app to install Busybox. If it completes, you have root, if it fails, repeat the steps above.
Once busybox is installed, go ahead and install the other remaining apps, and 'Allow' when prompted for superuser access. Congrats! You've rooted your A100!!

[Q] I think I can stump xda forums... seriously messed up 16gb

It's been a while since I've worked on this, and I still can't find anyone with a similar problem on xda. Does anyone have a clue what's going on with this thing?
First, I got it working just fine with CM7 installed to the nook itself, not running from an sd card. That worked for a bit, then it started just shutting off with no obvious reason.
Also, if I make any changes, like uninstalling apps, it goes right back after a reboot - which happens whether I want it to or not. This applies to changes done with CWM as well, even installing a new rom.
On top of that, it won't boot from an sd card, so that sucks too.
Lastly (I think, it's tough to keep track of all these problems) abd doesn't recognize the device, and for that matter the operating system doesn't either. I've been using Ubuntu Lucid if that matters, but it didn't have issues detecting the device before.
I'm pretty novice, but I think this is a very complicated problem in need of expert advice. Any answers, tips, advice, or pointing in the right direction for any of my problems here would be awesome. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Thanks, that reminds me, I did follow all steps to the letter without a hitch to get CM7 going. It wasn't until after it was running for a few days that this happened. Also, in the aftermath while trying to solve the problem, I did everything I can think of to completely brick the nook so that I might be able to use some of the methods here to unbrick.
And just to defend my good name, I think it's a stretch to imagine I've been critical of anyone. To reference your other post on these forums, perhaps you might reconsider how to be helpful. Let me help you out with that.

One: This was a completely pointless flaming. Two: For being a novice he seems to be a bit more informed than you are. This is an issue, however not a common one. And from what I have read in these forums there is not as yet a fix. Three: I didn't read any ungratefulness, criticism, nor any hint of being upset. And Four: If you can't help out or give any useful advice then maybe you should "leave this forum alone" until you learn to be more civil.

Alright, so thanks to old_fart and DavDoc I've determined two of my problems, and I think there are four.
First, DavDoc's linked thread describes perfectly what's happening with problem one, what I'm calling the Groundhog Day Syndrome for no particular reason. Any changes to my nook go right back after it's powered off.
Second, I checked out old_fart's linked thread and I'm pretty sure even though I have a blank screen it's still on in one mode or another. The program doesn't work though because of problem #3 (to be explained) but it seems sensible because to power it back on I must first hold the power button for an extended period of time and release, then hold it again for the normal power-up.
Problem number three is that the nook is not recognized by either Ubuntu or Windows when plugged in anymore. Thus that program not working, and also adb. I may be able to determine that one from error logs as soon as I figure out what in the world the error logs are saying.
Fourth and hopefully final, it won't boot from sd. I'll figure that out too.
Thanks for the advice so far, this forum is definitely indispensable for people who like to learn from playing with technology.

where to start

Somehow I lost track of time and I think I rooted v14.3.2.3.2 using TowelRoot. It's the 9" one, thor I believe.
There's been soo many threads and thousands of messages, but is there some sort of summary or good how to get SafeStrap going again? Is it doable?
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Installing Safestrap is as easy as downloading the APK and pressing a button.
Also, the 8.9" HDX is codenamed apollo, not thor.

What can be done to a 4th generation Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"?

Hi everybody.
I just ordered a new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"
It's just for testing, im 100% sure i will return it back to Amazon as soon as I've learned whats FireOS and what can be done.
I'm saying this because I've read some forums and i think i know some things, but not everything.
I've read I need to know things like firmware version of the tablet, Software version before doing anything risky.
My objective is realise if this tablet can be a great deal for me. For instance, I NEED YOUTUBE. I've read and watch some videos and it's not complicated. great.
But... What about alternative markets? or Google Play itself? Launchers? any Pure Android ROM?
I've seen root can be easily done (as far as i've understood) with TowelRoot, wich, i understand, is a reversible thing (superSU app, unroot)
What else can I say? Im not expert, but I'm not dumb. if you guys want me to check a step by step guide, I can do it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Best regards.
Depending on version, all of that can be done. However, with the newest builds of the software, all that you can do is install gapps (minus working play store), aftermarket store, and alternate launcher.

At the current OS level you don't have a lot of choices. Best option IMO is to have Amazon downgrade to 14.3.2.8 which will allow you to obtain root. From there you can install Safestrap and the Nexus ROM. Or simply enjoy the device as-is until additional customization options become available. Don't bother with a downgrade if you are planning to return.
If you want to learn more you'll have to do some reading. Things like "where can I find the hardware version" suggest you are just getting started. We have all been there and many people are willing to help but you've got to do some basic homework first. The various threads in this forum are an excellent resource.
you can try to unlock it. I think bootloader is still vulnerable to unlock.
fastboot oem unlock <unlock.img>
follow instruction on orig development. I don't know if it trigger tampered flag... try at your own risk.
once unlocked you can prepare a pre-rooted/ota disabled image

Depends what version it's on. If 4.5.2 or below you can at least root (with varying degrees of effort); if below 3.2.7 you can unlock the bootloader which opens up many other opportunities including a real recovery and different ROMS. Alternative ROMS are also available on 3.27->3.28 but require Safestrap. As you said, lots going on. This post will likely be obsolete in a few weeks. Might be now ...

Devs tend to focus on one device (most likely the one they have!) then adapt for other variants with the help of others. The most recent developments seem to be happening on Apollo. Keep watching the forums; I'm sure whatever you are looking for will show up eventually.
Keep in mind the HDX is not like most other android devices. It's difficult to tame and easy to brick. That said, it's a wonderful hunk of hardware worthy of your time/effort if you want to go beyond stock.
I have a Kindle HDX 8.9 Apollo. I used Kingroot to root my device. then used xposed installer with HDXposed module and installed Google Play Store. I have to reinstall Play Store after installing andopening an app in the Play Store. first install your apps do not open them or you will have to uninstall and reinstall the Play Store. good luck. hoping there is a way to unlock the bootloader soon. looking forward to putting a real ROM on this great device.

As I recall you are running FireOS 14.4.5.3. A quick search of Amazon reviews shows only few comments regarding SMS capability...all negative. I am not sure FireOS was designed to work as a SMS/MMS end point. Only speculating; hope I'm wrong.

There are numerous posts outlining the process. Look around until you find one that you like. Ask questions if unsure on details. Not exceptionally difficult but easy to brick your device if you take short cuts.
No, there's not a step-by-step guide, videos, etc. although some contributor posts get pretty close.
