[Q] ota update not working. stuck at 3389

Hey all,
I just got a replacement g tab from Woot today and I charged it an turned it on....it is at version 3389 and I can not get it to update to 3588. I have wifi connected and can access the web, etc... I've tried rebooting 5 times now and have tried the manual updating in the app tray and it says its up to date with 3389. Any ideas what is going on? I'm hoping maybe just viewsonics site that supplies the updates is down but not sure how I can verify that. I'm really hoping I don't have another g tab with issues....

Search for homebrew on the site here as it has all the stock ROMs
I had the same issue with a replacement I got today. Just used the stock one from the Dev forum. Do not know what is going on. Probably just a down server.

Hmm... down update server? Could it be viewsonic is gearing up for its next OTA? Rumor has it pegged for arround this time.
Thanks for the fast replies. Do you think that this problem is not a hardware issue? I wouldn't think this is hardware related and lean toward a problem with viewsonics servers as we'll, but I don't want to keep this tablet if it has a issue..... I see the stock Rome when I search for homebrew so that's easy enough to flash if nobody thinks this tablet has any hardware problems.
Possibly a new udpdate? Wouldn't THAT be nice.
Time to test that theory! Going back to stock to see what happens with the OTA.....
EDIT: INTERESTING. I just dropped 2967 on mine (nvflash) and it says there's no update. That should not be the case. Methinks there's something going on.....
EDIT2: Nothing on 3588 stock either (no updates). But will leave my device that way, for now.
I just got 2 gtabs from woot today and both are doing the same thing, stuck at 3389 and will not update. Even tried volume + and power on. Did not help. Thought maybe was cuz I am in Canada.
I guess the good news is it sounds like I don't have a hardware issue! I'll keep my fingers crossed for a new update from VS.

Yes it would then maybe Adam from VS could move on with his quest for a developer involved movement as requested last month? This would be the best place instead of starting a new place on VS web page
But for bandwidth usage they should use there service.
Reflashed mine back to stock 2967 earlier today and it wouldn't wouldn't do the OTA either. Kept saying it was up to date and never had that problem until today. Hope they are planning something nice for us.
I actually just got mine and it has 1.0-2638 and it's saying it's up to date
so having not done an OTA update, can I still install Vegan 5.1?
just got my Gtab from woot. for some strange reason, I didnt't get the whole setup screen on plugging it in and turning it on, mor did I get notice of an OTA update after getting the wifi going.
can I go ahead and load Vegan 5.1 anyway with the 3389 on it?
also, but perhaps tangential to this thread, which Kernel if any should I install on the Vegan 5.1? Clemsyn? Pershoot?
after the Vegan is installed, will it do a setup all over again? I'd like that.
my first post!
thanks!
My guess is that everybody that got their Gtab today from the woot is trying to download the update and it might have crashed the viewsonic update servers. Guessing Viewsonic wasn't expecting thousands of peeps trying to download updates all on the same day and didn't prepare. Or..........I could be totally wrong and they are getting the server ready for a Honeycomb realease?
I think most of them were received last week, there shouldn't be a huge number of new users.
Barcod - did you have to send your old tab back first before woot send out the new one? I ordered a replacement and really hope it doesn't have the same sound issues.

Nope, Woot sent me an advanced replacement and shipped it out the day they received my email about the audio problem. They were a pleasure to deal with. I still have the old tab to send back to them which they provided a shipping label for that as well.
This is pretty annoying, I cant even manually update using the thread located here.

Was that a Woot one or a Tiger Direct one? I would call VS Customer Service TODAY and ask them to please have them ask TapnTap Inc to fix the OTA updater ASAP. 2638 is probably the original firmware and it is NASTY bad. Buggy as all hell.
If they can't do anything, you should at least do a stock update via the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000.

3389 should be safe to use as a baseline.
I cant get the recovery firmware thing to work, (i am a noob at this)
I managed to get 2967 on but I didn't think it would work but it did.

That's our old homebrew one. You can use that command file with the newer zips on the link. Just rename the newer zip to "update.zip".
Given the number of new systems being shipped recently, this is pretty irresponsible of TapnTap and they really need to fix that ASAP. Their OTA updater is the ONLY "official" way to get updates, and it's been down since last night.
Maybe they have given up on our beloved g-tabs

[Q] Rooted KFHDX RMA?

I rooted my KFHDX 7, tried a build.prop mod to get playstore working, then I got a brick. Just a grey kindle fire logo and a bootloop. I tried a factory reset from the recovery, and it made me unable to use adb.
If I RMA this unit, will amazon try to penalize me for having rooted the device?

I think they don't even analyze it to that degree.I wouldn't worry about it. It just never fully booted and you want a new one that's not defective

that's a great service, how they collected and delivered the unit to you? did they charge anything in term on re-shipping?

My replacement was shipped next-day free of charge, and they sent me a prepaid shipping label for the bricked one (just the unit, they told me to keep the charger/cable)
Stellar service as usual

They certainly should penalize you..this was your mistake. If you don't want to assume responsibility for the risks that come with modifying your device, then don't modify your device.

Fire HD 6 Super Brick?

I was attempting to Re Root, then upgrade to Fire OS 5 dev and while doing so, I was doing the reboot after flashing the OS, G Apps, Framework and the original recovery and when I attempted to turn it on after that, Nothing! Nothing appears on the screen??
Anyone got any Ideas?
Sounds like a brick.
When I plug it in, It Makes the computer register it as some random boot loader or something, and then disconnects!
Like seriously!
=(
Help?
It comes up as:
MT65xx Preloader
That's a Bootloader for installing system images right?
the only way is call amazon and get your replacement

I've gotten 1, It was a Kid's Edition, Had to replace it again. Then I got one Thursday. Works great
Had like 2 updates 4.5.1 -> 4.5.3 -> 4.5.5
I Honestly don't plan to root this thing again due to the fact that I'm prob's selling it.
Now, do they look through these things, Like in their internal memory?

HDX stuck at "Fire is upgrading" - it started update before I got root

My Apollo is stuck trying to upgrade itself.
Background
Previously I did have Safestrap 3.75 and was running Nexus 1.0.1 is in a slot. I had 14.3.2.8 sitting in the Stock Rom slot.
Decided to upgrade to Nexus 4.0.5 so I went back to the stock slot and uninstalled safestrap 3.75.
Saw in the Safestrap 4.0.1 thread that I needed to be on 14.4.5.2 for it to work, so I manually forced upgrade to that version.
Then while I was attempting to get root back (quickly allowing wifi access for it to work) the damn machine downloaded a newer version of stock and tried to install it.
Well I thought "fine I will let it upgrade and then roll back to 14.3.2.8 and start again"
Wrong!. The HDX rebooted and then when it restarted it is now stuck at "Fire is upgrading..." and "Starting applications..." (shortly after the second orange Kindle Fire boot logo)
Now I cant access by adb because the unit is "unauthorized".
Any hope of getting it back online? Its been stuck at boot for a day now. Any hope of a way to bypass the upgrade during the boot phase?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, not much you can do without adb access. As a long shot try a factory reset from the native Kindle Fire recovery menu. Often this makes things worse but you have little to loose given the symptoms and age of device (likely long out of warranty).

On the phone with Amazon right now. They also suggested Factory Reset. I know it cant get worse because I already have no root. So I gave it a go. Just bootloops now - still trying to upgrade itself.
They want me to replace it with a refurb at my cost.
Thanks for nothing Amazon. I was on stock when this happened and it was your update that screwed me! LOL Probably get a Samsung or Nexus to replace. It was fun while it lasted though.

What you experienced is not uncommon based comments posted in XDA forums and Amazon customer reviews. OTAs are never 100% reliable but HDX devices seem to be more vulnerable to soft bricks with limited/no recovery options. Obviously the vast majority of users upgrade without incident but even a low single digit failure rate during the expected lifespan of the device raises a red flag. Amazon's replacement policy is also consistent: once out of warranty they will offer a refurb at current prices occasionally muted with a modest discount (eg: $20 USD off). BFD.
HDX is a great hunk of hardware if you can tame it. Nexus and Samsung tablets are a notch below imo but are much easier to mod. Sorry for your loss; good luck with whatever direction you opt to go.

Hi Davey, thanks for the thoughts. Its the truth that after 2 years this specs on the 3rd gen HDX are still right up there. The image quality and sound quality are outstanding compared to just about anything available - even today. But unfortunately if you like to tinker then its just too much work. Samsung and other manufacturers are heading down the same path with locked bootloaders but even so modding seems a dream compared to the HDX.
Probably going to get a tablet that utilizes a stylus since I really want to use it as a digital notepad for work and a movie player for leisure. My regular kindle e-reader is still the best option for reading books due to very light weight. As good as the HDX is (and any tablet for that matter), tablets are still a bit to heavy for serious reading in bed and the back light disturbs your sleep patterns.
If anyone else reading this has a viable option to get the unit to reboot without upgrading I am all ears, because as I have said I would love to get a bit more life out of this fantastic HDX hardware.

Take a peek at this thread for ideas. Long shot at best. The small glimmer of hope is you made it past the grey logo so dealing with a soft vs hard brick. That said, if USB debug wasn't enabled on 4.5.2 you will be hard pressed to secure meaningful access. Sorry this happened. Might look at grabbing a HDX from an auction site. You are wiser now and would likely make it through the rollback/upgrade procedure intact.

Unlock and Root of Kindle HDX 3rd Gen with Fire OS 4.5.5.3

Hey Guys,
I have tried to my knowledge over the past year every now and then, whenever I came across a new method/guide, to unlock and root my device. I want the f-ing Google Play Store on my Kindle too.
I come from the Previous Version to 4.5.5.3 and it seemed there was never an actually working Unlocking/Rooting Method available.. of maybe I have simply not found them.
Now after it had updated to 4.5.5.3 I have new hope that there will be a new Method available to unlock everything.
Do you guys have somewhere found a Guide that will give me the Informations I need? This little HDX is just plain awesome, even now after this long time. Everything that I could get running by sideloading runs butter smooth... but there is so much that I am missing. So I would love to have my device after such a long time at last unlocked and able to access the full Play Store.
Help is really appreciated.
Kind Regards

Full bootloader unlock and ROM replacement for any 3rd gen HDX regardless of FireOS level has been available for 2 years. Any FireOS v4.5.x build can be rooted via KingRoot. Achieving a stable Play Services/Store install on FireOS v4 is another matter.

Well, I till actually try this right now.... once the Power is charged again that is..
Thanks!
