Lets try to get OFFICIAL support from Cyanogenmod - Samsung Galaxy Light Questions & Answers

I know that there is already a thread on their forum asking for support BUT a second livelier thread cant hurt. Go ahead over and vote YES for official support.
PLEASE note that I'm NOT guaranteeing anything. I cant even guarantee that they will respond. But It cant hurt to try right?
Here is the link to go to the thread.

I don't know if it'll help any, but i've voted, would be nice if we had official support. Having official support would make having this phone more bearable until whenever I can get an upgrade, would like to get off of Touchwiz.

Voted!

Over 230 some views of this thread and only 6 votes on the cyanogen mod site. Really people, I am quite irked by that! Let's get some love for this device and possible official support for it!

You have to understand cm is losing many fans here. If you ask why then just have a look around. The main reason is they merge untested code, enclude bootloader, radios and other stuff that they should not be messing with and have even bricked a bunch of nexus devices. Also you have to keep in mind that many developers have walked away from Samsung devices due to their lieing to devs and the locked down nature of their devices.

That's a good point. I wouldn't mind any custom rom though like pac rom, or slim rom. But apparently this phone just isn't popular enough for people to care. Shame I don't have the money for an S4 lol

Well my best advice would be for someone with the device to dig in and see what they can get going. What you need to find out first is if the bootloader can be unlocked, then finding the kernel source for the device. Without those 2 basic things no one will be able to do anything for the device. If you find them in your favor (wish you all the luck in the world....you will need it with samaung) then the rest is not that hard. Getting device trees up and then syncing up to the source of your choice and boom. You got a rom

Just found a kernel source thanks to a generous xda'er, may I ask how we can check if the bootloader is unlockable? More familiar with Sony devices...

To the best of my knowledge the bootloader was never locked. Built before Samsung hated us!

Voted, lets do this, I cant WAIT for a decently running CM port. This phone is utterly AMAZING (its almost a Galaxy S4 but smaller and FAR cheaper) and its a damn shame there isnt enough DEV support yet

Just a little knowledge to the users that are out there. Right now we don't have a real ability of installing custom roms anyways, just hold on until we get a working kernel source so that we have a custom recovery. Then do what you want with your money.
I agree. Far be it from me to tell people how to use their money, but at this point we can't even get the compiled kernel from Samsung's source to boot.
If anyone out there is confident in their ability to release a product, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest purchasing the device up front (credit card?), and asking for donations after releasing the product. Just my opinion.

Gotta agree 100%.
I'm also a little gun shy after I donated to help buy a Droid for the guy on another forum who then got distracted by other projects.
On the other hand, I'm sure Koush and Cyanogenmod get donations they haven't even asked for.

Asking someone to buy you a phone so you can develop on it is pretty shady at best, even when you dont seem that willing to help with the actual code. The work you have done seems good, but from what i can tell, you're more of a chef than a dev. I am more a chef as well, i dont know code very well, but am learning. At the moment, our efforts on getting a recovery are turning up at nothing, so asking for people to make a donation to get you a phone that you wont be able to push roms out for yet is just not the way to go. Advertise again when we have a working recovery, if we do get to that point.

Actually I am not a chef. I build from AOSP and other things. I know a lot of Java and some C++. I was not able to build from AOSP on the D2 because of several things Motorola has left out. I tried over and over. I am asking to donate so I will be able to get AOSP roms and source build things on this device. If you do not wish to donate do not. I am just asking so I can make roms better for the device when the recovery is booted and released. That is all.
Umm... get donations from the d1 and d2 work that you've already done, buy a Fascinate, create ROMs for that, and THEN (if it's a halfway decent job) people will donate without you even needing to ask them. Why ask people to pay for something that you haven't even done yet but then reassure them it'll happen because of your other work? If what you did with the d1/2 is good then shouldn't you be able to get donations from that? I'm not accusing you of trying to scam people I'm just telling you what seems to make the most sense.

Well, once again, I'm not accusing you of trying to scam. But you do have to look at this from everyone else's view and realize people are not going to be too quick to jump on this. If there's not much coming in from work you have actually already done then it really doesn't seem like there's going to be much turnout for something that, at this point, is just based on your word.
So what's the exact problem with the recovery? Some threads say that you guys are able to get into the recovery anyway?

the problem right now with the recovery is that we cannot even get a custom kernel to boot, which is the starting point for a working recovery.

Are there any des working on this phone other than the few who are shaving over the 2-3 roms we have here in the development section?
My last phone was a nexus s (very used to variety and activity. And aokp) and these forums are disturbingly quiet, as are all the other ones i can find. Makes me wonder if i should find a trade on an international version, but this one looks so much better!
Thoughts? am i simply missing something?
Just relax, it will pick up, like always.

The note is a great platform in a great series of devices. Devs will not let it go untouched.
Would you rather have some cook bustout a rom he just copy pasted together from some source code he got from a Google search and it be filled with bugs and FCs or have a high quality rom that devs with talent have been working day and night in their spare time (for free) to build?
Long story short: get the note and breath lol

You should have bought a Google Nexus if you wanted the same kind of dev support a Nexus developer device brings.

Lets be honest...
If you want a device w/ an overactive dev community... HD2... that forum seems to STILL be rocking.
The Evo3d also has a pretty active community.
NO samusung device starts off w/ a super exciting community. They build slowly it seems. But i imagine it will pick up.

I'm with you, i have no time limit. There are times where I went months on a rom, but other times that I was flashing numerous roms just to see how they differed. I have so many android devices in my house that there's always something to play with. We are up to 3 nook colors, so I'm able to flash a phire to one, kanged to one, and good ol CM to one just to play with them side by side. Flashing roms is just fun to some and approached with a "why the hell not?" attitude rather then "ok i think im sure i want this one, i've ready all 8,532 comments on the thread...i think im ready", which is of course how i started this addiction.

[Q] Close Android development section?

I want to make this provocatoty question because after more than one month our XPS is the most locked phone here in XDA.
The fact is that we can only swap original firmwares, there is no way to root the phone in an easy way, without unlocking bootloader, and there is no recovery available.
I'm new in a similar situation after many smartphones owned; yes, the software is not bad, nor has big issues, but the plus of Android is also the openess...
What do you think?
Dude what the... we have root, can unlock the bootloader on the first day of the device how much easier and open can you get? I'm guessing you have never owned a Motorola phone before as u will then know the meaning of "locked tight".
Clockworkmod is coming like everything else, if you want to speed up the process you should help out perhaps, we can never have too many modders, rom makers, tweakers etc.
-smc
I've owned two motorola phones, and from what I see they did not have the bootloader not accepting unsigned software, even if locked. This make big difference as for now only official firmware are loadable and without a Sony change the situation remain without solutions.
...Okay
The phone has been out less than a month, and it's not even out globally yet (see the gigantic India thread, and others floating around at the moment, it's only available via import in a lot of locations)
Another thing...it is all being worked on at the moment. You want a custom firmware? be patient. There can't be any custom kernels yet because there is a bug in the bootloader at the moment (or something, I won't pretend to know how that works as i'm not a developer) that's keeping Doom and other developers from moving further with the development. Doom also doesn't own the S yet, so he can only do soo much at the moment.
There is already Mods available, but there isn't any modified firmwares out yet, because no one is making any, which I don't blame them because ICS is on its way. You can do it all yourself (read themes and apps section, maybe learn a bit about how to modify phone?), and until the bootloader thing is fixed, thats the best thing to do really.
There's no way to root without unlocking the bootloader -yet-.
It has been adressed many times, that there may be one in the future, but unlocking the bootloader is the current solution, and it works just fine. Also, keeping your bootloader locked (and it can even be relocked) limits your phone anyways. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't void your warranty, it just may if you do something stupid (read overlocking and frying phone) they may or may not (if they even see that you broke your phone by your own doing) fix it under warranty.
Also, if you havent noticed...there isn't a lot of developers on the Xperia S train yet, it all takes time.

Are you blind or what ? there is root, unlocking bootloader is offered DIRECTLY by SONY, so no need to hack...
Sony has released sources for almost anything on this phone, so if you're able to you can edit and rebuild...
there is also a modded kernel...
what you want more ?
if you want you can download sources, and start to learn how to build the kernel... there are guides on the sony developer site.
it's not easy to find something to mod, when everythinq works VERY GOOD with stock... but if there are requests... we can start to mod...
Nope, If you read relating posts, there is no way to make roms as in other phones, due to the bootloader bug, that is related to Sony not to developers.

Please be polite, and read problems involved in development. Doom has locked his thread until there are news from Sony.
So OP's suggested solution for all these difficulties is just close the development section, then everything else will automatically be solved without anyone working, testing and exchanging ideas on it? Kudos to OP!
Actually I smell troll here.

Although there is a bug in the bootloader I see no reason to close the whole thread .
There are other things that can be worked on and at the moment. It's a good place to get Stock Firmware that can be flashed . Always good to have a heavy variety of Stock ROMs to fall back too.
As stock firmwares are developed hopefully the bug will be fixed and Devs will be able to continue.

If that's trolling, I submit to moderators judgement, and accept their decisions.

If that's trolling, I submit to moderators judgement, and accept their decisions.

Yeah, I agree, the section with the second highest posts is totally abandoned...
...If we follow this guideline, I think we should close the Accessories section, due to lack of gadgets to go with our phones! (can you see the sarcasm?)
Really, just be patient, it's a new phone, stop whining, or how you say "being provocative".
Edit: Okay sorry, maybe that was a bit harsh...but really, I feel you don't really have the right to judge the speed of fixes and developments when you aren't doing it yourself. The best thing you can do is deal with it for now. They are doing what they can.

Good news, thanks

[Q] I have a few

Hello I'm a newb!
I'm sorry, but this is the unfortunate state I find myself in.
When I first found this site, what I was expecting to find was a ICS for my phone. I could not have guessed what I would learn here. I had no idea I had a counter in my phone to worry about when installing open sourced roms? Next after much more reading I am to learn the source code Google releases is not complete, and uses binary drivers? Now I am to learn about CIQ, and my phone is spying on me? Wow!
Before I say anything else I want to express my thanks to this community. This has been such a resource I had no idea that it would be when I started. Thank you!
Now on to my question that after learning about all of that I don't seem to have a clear answer to. What I wanted when I first considered getting an Android phone, was to build from source, and run my own rom. I still want this, even more so since I learned about CIQ.
1. Due to the counter on my phone
2. I am to understand multiple images that make the phone work (boot, firmware, system)
3. The binary drivers.
Is this at all a reasonable goal?
Are there more flash images that I haven't read about yet?
Would having a direct from Google rom even be desirable?
I own a stock SGH-I777, I have done nothing to it yet.
Lastly about this site:
Is there anything you think I should read about on the forums?
Any language I should know, as in what does hellraiser imply/mean?
Any Android experience you think might benefit a could be developer?
Counter can be reset and avoided all together.
Sorry I don't know much about AOSP building, but your better off starting with compiling CM and learn from there unless you are really experienced in coding.
Speaking of, the image used to not increment the counter does, or does not still contain CIQ? I suspect it does? I would like a phone at some point w/o CIQ, and fully open source. Ty for reminding me.

I'm shocked AT&T choose not to bug their customers? I assumed since I saw mention of it being on Samsung, that it was on all their phones?

No it was just some phones, I think the skyrocket had it at some point.

Ok, so I rooted my first cell phone. It would seem heimdall latest has a bug that will brick your phone. (I'm on Mac OS Lion) I used the 1.3.1 instead, and it worked fine.
I saw many more sites, and this was quite easy. The way they showed it was very complex. Since I'm new at this should I wait to try out a ICS rom till after Samsung releases their source code, and the devs have had a chance to get it stable? How complete is the open source version of ICS? There was a note on the fsf.org page that linked me over here that some of the parts were still binary. Is it still true?
I think long term I want to get away from the official releases.
Well, you came this far, might as well flash an ICS rom now. If the leaks are any indication of status, the Samsung release will be pretty stable but the included kernel is problematic because it can cause hardbricking. Besides, you want to get away from stock, and all of the big roms released thus far are pretty darn stable; I don't know anything about binary parts or any of the coding, but plenty of people have no problem running CM or AOKP. Even the Samsung-based roms all look AOSP-like nowadays because they use Apex or Nova (not many devs like Touchwiz anymore). So take your pick, they're all good roms and most look like AOSP to some extent, with a few (mainly CM and AOKP) striving for pure AOSP.
Make sure to read and follow this guide carefully for flashing stuff, and have fun!
Ok here is where I have a problem. I have no idea about half of what you said? I know AOSP means "Android open source project" by inference of another reply. I even think CWM means "clockwork mod." (don't even know what this is yet) Saw a youtube video that mentioned it.
What is hard bricking, and what should I read to prevent it? I came here for a ICS rom, and it sounds like the two trying to be most open source are my preference.

Read, read, and read some more. If you don't understand the post above then there is no way you would be able to compile a rom for this phone, which is what I gathered from your op

Prother, by no mean to offense you, but seriously, if you don't know those fundamental technical terms, I strongly suggest you to hold off what you about to do and spend more time reading.
Let me go off and do a search the post for you, where you can get used to those terms.
Hang tight, prother.

So I will. To be honest I don't see the connection between the new jargon, and development I learn in school. There is definately much to learn here. I was expecting this to be like Zaurus development from back when I was active, it's very clear to me that this is a very different beast.
Here is one, I'm sure there is other thread.

Thank you friend. I may not have my own rom at the end of summer, but I should be on my way to understanding what would be needed for one.
Well the terms I wanted are not present on that list, most of that I was familiar with. To be honest, some of it I have not seen before as well. What is hellraiser, and some of the other xda developed jargon? I do have a tab open to that part of the forums, I just hadn't made it over there yet. I started on the forums for my device, then Android OS, and lastly general. Is there any other place I should pay special attention to that would help me?

Ok? I'm not sure I understand, is there something you don't like about the aokp rom that doesn't work very well?
I want off of the carrier provided images based on personal conviction. Google's development practices smack of cathedral, as do all of the 3rd party companies. In a sense they are abusing the spirit of free software by using a signed kernel to impede (if not actually prevent) our right to modify hardware we own. Any normal user of the software provided by the community (bazaar) can only help the cause.
I plan to share what I personally learn with close friends who live in my area. The more people we liberate, the better for everyone else. I simply applaud the work done here.
You can safely ignore Phalanx's post, he's just mocking you and other new users for not reading carefully and being stupid. You're at least trying to read and understand stuff, so I don't see any reason you should be put down the way he's doing so.
Here are a couple other links I think you'll find useful (please click my thanks button if you agree!):
ROM vs Kernel
Odex vs Deodex
Make sure to read all of the links posted in the sticky at the top of this forum, too. But note that by no means is this everything you need to read.
Mind you, all this reading is meant mostly for end-users, so that we learn how to safely and smartly modify our phones. Actual original developing beyond using what's already provided by the devs is a whole different story, and I'm sure there's even more to read up on that.
Good luck, happy flashing, and if you plan to develop later down the line, good luck with that too!

Ty for all your help. I'm glad you're all so thorough, it was like peeling an onion. The more I was looking at rooting my phone, the more there was to learn. All of you have done an amazing job making this approachable to a brand new user.
Ah I don't assume anymore about what people are trying to say, not everyone is a native english speaker. So I try to be understanding.
Yup I'll be at this for a while, I'm happy to have made some introductions, and maybe some time down the road I can even hope to contribute in some small way.
From a relative noob:
Follow the directions in the " [GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!! " thread. Then pick a rom you want to try and follow the CWM directions ... after that , find a ROM you like. If you don't want to void your warranty, wait for your carrier to provide the closest thing to what you want ... but, I'm happy with my flashed ICS ROM.

Time, resources, and a large amount of users who are complaining about a lack of 4.4 while doing nothing to try and help. We have very few devs working on this, and they're putting all of their focus into stable 4.3 builds before they take on 4.4.

thanks for the nice response, but what I meant was, will it ever come or are missing drivers or other code that manufacturers won't provide the real problem ?

I'm just ASKING if there is something that is blocking the development like missing drivers, because I read somewhere that it will "NEVER HAPPEN FOR ONE X+ BECAUSE SOME DRIVERS WERE MISSING AND WOULD NEVER BE OPEN SOURCED BY THE MANUFACTURER"
but thanks for going all asshole on me because people ask you about it too much

You do realize that you just called one of the only devs of hox+ for both roms and kernels who has plenty of other things and devices to do, less reason to continue the support for this phone. Maybe try this thing called Google, I hear you can find answers there for various questions... Or as Loir suggested go and build your own environment and try to port 4,4 over and then see what errors you get in the compile. Then collaborate with the others to fix or at least circumvent them.

sorry for bowing down to him...
I'm thankful for his work. but he misinterprets my question and tells me to stop nagging
are you really telling me to google that stuff when xda is the only real trustable source? google will give you 50 sites that say 4.4 is ready and another 50 that say it will never happen.
and I've been following his thread on 4.4 but the only thing I ask for is if there is something blocking the development.
I think you guys are really frustrated... if it's such a huge buzzkill for you/him then **** it don't port it.
I was really expecting an answer like :"we're waiting for manufacturer X to release sources for x or y"
or maybe "the chipset doesn't support a core function" or something along those lines

You kind of missed the whole point of xda. It's about helping out others, BUT if you don't get the answers you want then you are supposed to find out and then contribute that information! There's nothing stopping you from trying it yourself to see how difficult it can really be.
No I didn't expect you google 4.4 kitkat development, However there are plenty of other threads and forums also irc chats where all the problems get discussed. Those can be found by searching on google. Maybe adjust your criteria.
As for being frustrated, you a damn right, most other platforms either get the help or ability to perform s-off and many other documents/source code for their devices, HTC and nVidia in their infinite wisdom have choosen not to give out much at all to help to development community for the enrc2b . As for you saying its a "buzzkill" for us and that you aren't happy with all the work that people have been putting in for over a year now, all for free and available to everyone to enjoy at their discretion, maybe you should grow up and consider your words more carefully.

you do realise that the last paragraphe of your answer is what I've been looking for right?
and why would you think I wasn't happy with the work? why else would I be here...
what my next point was going to be... was that... I think that htc and nvidia think nobody really cares about the devices because as far as searching for answers there are really not many people posting about it and contributing to porting the code(like you said yourself, and I understand it sucks).
it's also a device you don't see often... I have yet to encounter somebody IRL with a one x+
Maybe some sort of petition could help push them to release it? it's not like it's top secret alien stuff their holding back...

Long story short, mass emailing, petitions, phone calls, everything they choose to ignore. Even though its been argued that they are violating the gpl its all been tried and a lot of people and devs have been pissed off enough to switch to a different platform. The guys that are left are basically the best ones we've ever had and have done so much with so little help. The device was sort of shunned by the retail guys, not sure why, it wasn't even officially released in my country. Maybe thats the problem, there weren't enough of them at the start to bother. Either way Loir and the other guys, Tom Briden and lately PippoX3 have been doing a great job.
Hopefully now the source code for 4.4.1 has been released for nexis devices yesterday to the aosp community, we might get some more help on the porting side of things for hox+
as it stands right now, @tombriden is busy moving home, @maxwen has moved on, @PippoX3 has moved on, so it means i'm the only one left for the time being.
I'am trying to bring the AT&T X+ into the fold, while trying to maintain the enrc2b and the HTC First user's wanting my attention. All i ask are more people to step up and help, in little ways if need's be.... i will adjust my tutorial later for building from source.

Unfortunately the time is very tight... personally I choose hammerhead to have much less works to do.
I'm waiting to sell my HOX+. And without a device to test roms, is much difficult.
As @tombriden says a lot of times: got a life. Family and job has priority...
I believe that developer with much more time to spend on, are teen agers without family commitments.
Anyway if I'm not wrong, the hard-core to overcome is the kernel.
