Matt4542's Fascinate. Rom developer. - Fascinate Android Development

Hey guys :]
So a lot of you probably don't know who I am because I am a Droid and Droid 2 rom developer for the rom Epic or Epic Unleashed. I wanna bring my rom Epic Unleashed to the Fascinate but I dont have the funds to afford one. I am asking if you, the Fascinate community can you please donate so I will be able to but a Fascinate and develop custom roms for all of you. I would refund all the money not used to the people who donated it. If you would like to donate please click here and donate as much as you would like. Mods and/or admins please do not take this thread down because I want to get a Fascinate to make all your phones better :]
Thanks!

Just a little knowledge to the users that are out there. Right now we don't have a real ability of installing custom roms anyways, just hold on until we get a working kernel source so that we have a custom recovery. Then do what you want with your money.

I agree. Far be it from me to tell people how to use their money, but at this point we can't even get the compiled kernel from Samsung's source to boot.
If anyone out there is confident in their ability to release a product, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest purchasing the device up front (credit card?), and asking for donations after releasing the product. Just my opinion.

Gotta agree 100%.
I'm also a little gun shy after I donated to help buy a Droid for the guy on another forum who then got distracted by other projects.
On the other hand, I'm sure Koush and Cyanogenmod get donations they haven't even asked for.

Lol, yeah, don't want to get Jaked.

LOL get Jaked. That's funny as hell. I remember when I first got my DINC that tool had a ton of people following him and was basically full of **** and made a million claims he didn't back up. I wad one of the ones who donated and supported his BS so getting jaked is real.;-)

Actually I am a developer on the D2 and D1, I dont promise things that I would not be able to do. If you can or want to please dontate, a recovery will be out soon and I know there isn't one but just wait.
Thanks

I would buy it up front but I dont have the money to spend right now, that is why I need the donations to be able to afford the device.

Matt is a cool guy, I used to test his roms on my Droid! Once a recovery is made I will most likely make a donation to ya Matt

Asking someone to buy you a phone so you can develop on it is pretty shady at best, even when you dont seem that willing to help with the actual code. The work you have done seems good, but from what i can tell, you're more of a chef than a dev. I am more a chef as well, i dont know code very well, but am learning. At the moment, our efforts on getting a recovery are turning up at nothing, so asking for people to make a donation to get you a phone that you wont be able to push roms out for yet is just not the way to go. Advertise again when we have a working recovery, if we do get to that point.

Actually I am not a chef. I build from AOSP and other things. I know a lot of Java and some C++. I was not able to build from AOSP on the D2 because of several things Motorola has left out. I tried over and over. I am asking to donate so I will be able to get AOSP roms and source build things on this device. If you do not wish to donate do not. I am just asking so I can make roms better for the device when the recovery is booted and released. That is all.

Umm... get donations from the d1 and d2 work that you've already done, buy a Fascinate, create ROMs for that, and THEN (if it's a halfway decent job) people will donate without you even needing to ask them. Why ask people to pay for something that you haven't even done yet but then reassure them it'll happen because of your other work? If what you did with the d1/2 is good then shouldn't you be able to get donations from that? I'm not accusing you of trying to scam people I'm just telling you what seems to make the most sense.

Actually I am not getting many donations towards my D1/D2 development :/ I just need some money so I could develop of this device when there is a recovery but people needed to make a big deal out of it :/

Well, once again, I'm not accusing you of trying to scam. But you do have to look at this from everyone else's view and realize people are not going to be too quick to jump on this. If there's not much coming in from work you have actually already done then it really doesn't seem like there's going to be much turnout for something that, at this point, is just based on your word.

So what's the exact problem with the recovery? Some threads say that you guys are able to get into the recovery anyway?

the problem right now with the recovery is that we cannot even get a custom kernel to boot, which is the starting point for a working recovery.

Isn't that like saying "I'm not the racist type, but...."
Of course it's unnecessary. But there's nothing else to do at the moment on here. It's a little frustrating to see the work in the other variant forums, and to hear crickets and hopes in here.
I KNOW incredible people are hard at work right this minute to fix it, but....
It's looking like we will be last to see Voodoo, last to see Froyo, and last to see CM.
I'm not the whining type, but.....
I'm growing restless. lol.
If you're (the general you, not calling anyone out) interested in development, I suggest joining the IRC channel #samsung-fascinate on freenode. This is where you'll get the most up to date information. (For example, we were testing CWM recovery with Koush long before the first post showed up here).
If you'd like a small project to get you in the swing of things, and you're slightly familiar with linux and can get a VM up and running, you could always download the source from Samsung and learn how to compile your own kernel. I've seen a few people in the channel go from knowing pretty much nothing to getting their kernels compiled. Even if you can't get a linux VM up and running, maybe someone in the channel could help you with that.
Obviously thanks to Samsung, the kernel won't boot, but going through the process will help broaden your knowledge and give you some insight into Android and Linux in general. There's plenty to learn, and there's a wide range of people there with varying levels of expertise.
There are a number of us who have been at this since day 1, and since we "know" each other a little better, we often communicate directly between ourselves. If you pop in the IRC channel and don't see anything, don't take that to mean that no work is being done.
There are some major obstacles to be overcome here, and Samsung didn't do us any favors. We're working a number of things right now, getting the kernel source fixed, AOSP, voodoo, etc.. It will take time, but we're getting there.

if you notice i did not flame you... I could have, but i respect you as a xda member... I just said this was unnecessary, because it is. Like namebrandon said, join the irc channel, but starting a topic like that, then just saying some nonsense, really doesnt need to be done... Your a senior member, we need to be a good influence for the new people. Like i said, i've seen you help out and i respect that; but lets try to keep the Android Development to Android Development. If it's something like this atleast file it in general.

New 2.2 rom build help

I would like to start learning how to put roms together. I would like to start with developing a 2.2 rom compiled from galaxy s I900 source. Is there anyone here that can point me in the direction of a good tutorial on how to start? I have been using other peoples work for like a year and a half and would really like to create rather than use. I am a total noob when it comes to developing so any help would be great. thx

Good luck!
You can't develop a rom using only kernel source.

In all seriousness do you stay apprised in any way shape or form of android related news our just enjoy smearing the forums with your illinformed ramblings and negativity? Speak of what you know and don't be so eager to dismiss anyone with the fortitude to increase their own knowledge base on an operating system such as this when its these people who we all depend on to better our experience with said operating system. As it is these people for whom google turns to when it comes to ideas on how to better their future stock releases. Thank you for the vote of confidence.

You do realize fallingup has written more android code than your phone can hold?
The reason they seem testy is they(actual developers) have been spending all their free time trying to get Samsungs crappy code to compile, and every couple of hours some one asks for an easy how to guide for porting Froyo.
Spend some time reading the forums. Find out what is already being done, then learn the basics of rom development. THEN, ask intelligent questions on how help develop Froyo for our phones.
Asking for an easy way to cook roms is the equivalent of the kid in the back seat asking "are we there yet" every 30 seconds. If you really want to learn how to cook roms, try a couple easy ones with the kitchen I linked to, then learn how to work on roms without the kitchen. Then work on Froyo. There is no easy way.
I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing. As far as my last post I meant no disrespect to fallingup in fact it was my mistake to quote his post. I actually intended on quoting jt1134 so, to fallingup, I have used your stuff many times and have nothing but respect for what you do. I apologize for the misquote. I in no way think myself to be super genius to the 10th power nor do I believe that I can actually do anything worth while with this code. I'm just bored and want to learn. I'm also an Android addict.
P.S. Thank you for the link. Also you'll notice in my last post now that you know of my misquote, that I am actually 100% behind people like fallingup. I would never knowingly give a verbal bashing like that to him.(god I feel like **** now)
You meant to quote ME? Wow.
In all seriousness, and no disrespect intended, I'll explain a few things.
The code Samsung provides is NOT the full OS. Not even close. It's the kernel, plus a few android packages. In most cases, the android packages are EXACT copies of the code that has been available from Google for months, and in other cases has one line changes referencing a Makefile that doesn't exist. This is no way gets us any closer to a 2.2 rom other than the kernel. What we REALLY need is a working 2.2 ota build or leaked package to move forward any faster. That is MUCH more important than the garbage that Samsung has been releasing to us.
If you are a noob to development, then GOOD LUCK. If you are an advanced developer with intimate knowledge of android, then GOOD LUCK. There are quite a few of us working on aosp ports to the SGS phone series, and so far it has not been completed for a SINGLE device.
There are no guides that will explain exactly what is needed to accomplish this goal. There is no one who is going to hold anyone else's hands through it. Hacking is a meritocracy, meaning you'll get help with advanced topics when you show you have done your research, put effort into resolving the issue on your own, and ask intelligent and informed questions that give exact details of the situation.
If you would like to continue to show a poor attitude, then go for it on your own. Wait for us to release a working rom. If you would like to actually learn and invest some time in moving forward, the GO FOR IT, you are VERY WELCOME to do so. Read the porting guides written by google, try some stuff out, and come over to IRC and get your hack on.
I'm tired. I'm generally a nice guy, sorry!

Now I have the right person quoted. Did you even read my post??? Let me repeat a key part so that you can understand and maybe you can stop battering the new guy.
"I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing."
I have admitted to my know nothingness. I simply want to learn. You could respond with something such as Galaxy S 2.2 is not a good place to start the learning process. Or you could have left it alone entirely and just thought that the link posted by "sgtmack" was sufficient enough. After all it did answer the exact question I asked. You might know a lot more about code and code writing than me but you have to admit, "your kind of an arrogant ass!" Now I would like to end this banter by allowing you to respond in whatever way you deem necessary. I myself will give this no further thought as I would like to move on now. That and I believe I have made myself look bad enough now.
As for fallingup and sgtmack, thanks for the hard work and helpful advice.
yutzyscott, do you not realize that jt and dirrk are the ones that got us the voodoo kernel? do you know they are the ones that got the kernel booting in the first place using samsung's ****ty source code? without jt, there would be nothing to build a rom around. wtf do you mean ill-informed when jt probably knows more than most people about developing for this phone? pay some ****ing respect for people that deserve it.
Yeah I do but, when this whole thing started I did not read who the post was by but, rather I just read the post. While I appreciate his work and am actually using it, my pride was hurt and its hard to interpret someones tone on a forum. I was under the impression in the beginning of all this that it would be known that I downloaded the 2.2 ota pushed to the original galaxy s and not the source they have been working with and making leaps and bounds with despite the road blocks. I was interested in learning how to port it (the ota I mean) rather than just sitting on my hands waiting to use anothers work. Chances are that I would never even come close to understanding what I was looking at but, I had to try. Now I'm sorry I asked. I quit...I was wrong, sorry! Leaving it to the experts. I'll go back to helping people with simple basic problems on droidforums.net and continue being an expert on using the real experts work.
This doesn't need to be turned into a flame thread. So here's my advice: join us on irc.freenode.net #samsung-fascinate and ask questions there. learn how to build a kernel, and maybe try to find out how exactly to port roms from other devices. Its a tough business, especially when we don't even get working kernel source from the manufacturer.
There are a ton of people that are working on the galaxy s phones, trying to get AOSP and the like on them. These phones are quite different than any other android phones, just with the way that the hardware / partitions are, so there is a lot to work through and document. Once one of the SGS phones is running aosp, im sure the others wont be too far behind. I wouldn't bother porting another crappy samsung rom, cause it will still have a lot of the crap that we are trying to get rid of by running aosp.
Thanks. And to jt, im sorry for being an argumentative ****. Thanks for all your hard work and despite the fact that there are many having issues with voodoo I am one of the many who it is working beautifully for.

What is AOKP and what does it mean?

Hey
Ive been seening "AOKP" alot instead of "AOSP" and I want to know what is it and what does it mean?
Thanks a lot.
AOKP stands for "Android open kang project". What's kanging? Take a look:
Kanging (or to be kanged) – To have one’s developer code and work taken, manipulated, rebranded, and re-released by someone else with no credit.

I disagree with Rootzwiki's stands: Open source is open source. The joy of it is modifying it. If you dont like for your source to be modified and make it better, dont make it open source/dont be part of AOSP.
I agree with you in some spots but I disagree by dont giving credits. A developer puts effort and time ,without getting payed, in a project - at least honor him by giving credit.
My knowledge is updated.

Agreed, but credit should be given where credit is due...
And usually is so don't stress it too much.
Cyanogenmod
Thanks for the info.
There is nothing wrong with working off of someone elses work, especially if you feel you can improve upon it. The only thing that sucks is most people will not give the other developer any credit. Just putting in your rom post to give someone else credit, you'd be suprised how many people will actually go to the other post for that person and just hit the thanks button.
The thanks button is there to show you appreciate what someone has done, or helped you. More or less it's like a handshake or a thumbs up...
I've done quiet a bit of work for the Samsung Vibrant and didn't recieve alot of credit. the CM7 builds of the vibrant used my GPS files to fix the GPS issue... Did I get any credit? None... Thats right the CM7 team worked off my files. Alot of other roms as well... Why? Because my GPS files worked the best... I was disappointed when I looked into the rom and saw my GPS files were the ones being used there.
As for the phone i'm using now, i've had 70 download on a new MMS.apk that I had help with. I have only recieved 3 thanks and just a multitude of people complaining about things. Hey I understand there are things wrong thats why it's still a beta and i'm working on it with the dev that made the other one for the Nexus but still... you think i'd get some thanks...
Nope..
It happens... its just life...
Now i'm gonna go get an Iphone and join the herd of sheep. lol jk
Thanks Ah Million!!!!

I don't own a Vibrant, but I wanna say Thanks!!! I don't know why people are ignorant but some just are!!! and the sad thing is the majority of people who download roms/fixes are! sad indeed. But there are alot of people who value your work and devs like you. I'm trying to find "square one" so to speak, because I wanna learn to build roms. And to be honest it's developer's like you that make me wanna step up to the plate and help with more than just a thanks

so can somebody explain why we can't get a stable 4.4 port?

what's stopping devs from porting it?

Time, resources, and a large amount of users who are complaining about a lack of 4.4 while doing nothing to try and help. We have very few devs working on this, and they're putting all of their focus into stable 4.3 builds before they take on 4.4.

thanks for the nice response, but what I meant was, will it ever come or are missing drivers or other code that manufacturers won't provide the real problem ?

are you ok?
I'm just ASKING if there is something that is blocking the development like missing drivers, because I read somewhere that it will "NEVER HAPPEN FOR ONE X+ BECAUSE SOME DRIVERS WERE MISSING AND WOULD NEVER BE OPEN SOURCED BY THE MANUFACTURER"
but thanks for going all asshole on me because people ask you about it too much

You do realize that you just called one of the only devs of hox+ for both roms and kernels who has plenty of other things and devices to do, less reason to continue the support for this phone. Maybe try this thing called Google, I hear you can find answers there for various questions... Or as Loir suggested go and build your own environment and try to port 4,4 over and then see what errors you get in the compile. Then collaborate with the others to fix or at least circumvent them.

sorry for bowing down to him...
I'm thankful for his work. but he misinterprets my question and tells me to stop nagging
are you really telling me to google that stuff when xda is the only real trustable source? google will give you 50 sites that say 4.4 is ready and another 50 that say it will never happen.
and I've been following his thread on 4.4 but the only thing I ask for is if there is something blocking the development.
I think you guys are really frustrated... if it's such a huge buzzkill for you/him then **** it don't port it.
I was really expecting an answer like :"we're waiting for manufacturer X to release sources for x or y"
or maybe "the chipset doesn't support a core function" or something along those lines

You kind of missed the whole point of xda. It's about helping out others, BUT if you don't get the answers you want then you are supposed to find out and then contribute that information! There's nothing stopping you from trying it yourself to see how difficult it can really be.
No I didn't expect you google 4.4 kitkat development, However there are plenty of other threads and forums also irc chats where all the problems get discussed. Those can be found by searching on google. Maybe adjust your criteria.
As for being frustrated, you a damn right, most other platforms either get the help or ability to perform s-off and many other documents/source code for their devices, HTC and nVidia in their infinite wisdom have choosen not to give out much at all to help to development community for the enrc2b . As for you saying its a "buzzkill" for us and that you aren't happy with all the work that people have been putting in for over a year now, all for free and available to everyone to enjoy at their discretion, maybe you should grow up and consider your words more carefully.

you do realise that the last paragraphe of your answer is what I've been looking for right?
and why would you think I wasn't happy with the work? why else would I be here...
what my next point was going to be... was that... I think that htc and nvidia think nobody really cares about the devices because as far as searching for answers there are really not many people posting about it and contributing to porting the code(like you said yourself, and I understand it sucks).
it's also a device you don't see often... I have yet to encounter somebody IRL with a one x+
Maybe some sort of petition could help push them to release it? it's not like it's top secret alien stuff their holding back...

Long story short, mass emailing, petitions, phone calls, everything they choose to ignore. Even though its been argued that they are violating the gpl its all been tried and a lot of people and devs have been pissed off enough to switch to a different platform. The guys that are left are basically the best ones we've ever had and have done so much with so little help. The device was sort of shunned by the retail guys, not sure why, it wasn't even officially released in my country. Maybe thats the problem, there weren't enough of them at the start to bother. Either way Loir and the other guys, Tom Briden and lately PippoX3 have been doing a great job.
Hopefully now the source code for 4.4.1 has been released for nexis devices yesterday to the aosp community, we might get some more help on the porting side of things for hox+
as it stands right now, @tombriden is busy moving home, @maxwen has moved on, @PippoX3 has moved on, so it means i'm the only one left for the time being.
I'am trying to bring the AT&T X+ into the fold, while trying to maintain the enrc2b and the HTC First user's wanting my attention. All i ask are more people to step up and help, in little ways if need's be.... i will adjust my tutorial later for building from source.

Unfortunately the time is very tight... personally I choose hammerhead to have much less works to do.
I'm waiting to sell my HOX+. And without a device to test roms, is much difficult.
As @tombriden says a lot of times: got a life. Family and job has priority...
I believe that developer with much more time to spend on, are teen agers without family commitments.
Anyway if I'm not wrong, the hard-core to overcome is the kernel.

yeap completely agree with you

Lets try to get OFFICIAL support from Cyanogenmod

I know that there is already a thread on their forum asking for support BUT a second livelier thread cant hurt. Go ahead over and vote YES for official support.
PLEASE note that I'm NOT guaranteeing anything. I cant even guarantee that they will respond. But It cant hurt to try right?
Here is the link to go to the thread.

I don't know if it'll help any, but i've voted, would be nice if we had official support. Having official support would make having this phone more bearable until whenever I can get an upgrade, would like to get off of Touchwiz.

Over 230 some views of this thread and only 6 votes on the cyanogen mod site. Really people, I am quite irked by that! Let's get some love for this device and possible official support for it!

You have to understand cm is losing many fans here. If you ask why then just have a look around. The main reason is they merge untested code, enclude bootloader, radios and other stuff that they should not be messing with and have even bricked a bunch of nexus devices. Also you have to keep in mind that many developers have walked away from Samsung devices due to their lieing to devs and the locked down nature of their devices.

That's a good point. I wouldn't mind any custom rom though like pac rom, or slim rom. But apparently this phone just isn't popular enough for people to care. Shame I don't have the money for an S4 lol

Well my best advice would be for someone with the device to dig in and see what they can get going. What you need to find out first is if the bootloader can be unlocked, then finding the kernel source for the device. Without those 2 basic things no one will be able to do anything for the device. If you find them in your favor (wish you all the luck in the world....you will need it with samaung) then the rest is not that hard. Getting device trees up and then syncing up to the source of your choice and boom. You got a rom

Just found a kernel source thanks to a generous xda'er, may I ask how we can check if the bootloader is unlockable? More familiar with Sony devices...

To the best of my knowledge the bootloader was never locked. Built before Samsung hated us!
Voted, lets do this, I cant WAIT for a decently running CM port. This phone is utterly AMAZING (its almost a Galaxy S4 but smaller and FAR cheaper) and its a damn shame there isnt enough DEV support yet
