Hey guys - does anyone know of any after-market battery covers for the HD that would be metal - specifically for the purpose of attaching to a magnet? I purchased one of those magnetic "cradle" kits that is basically just a big magnet you stick onto whereever, with a little metal slab that you stick onto the back of your phone. Then - you can just stick the phone up close to the magnet and it sticks - a perfect low-profile car cradle. The metal slab that sticks to the back of the phone is thin - it doesn't really stick out any further than the camera housing - but it still isn't as sleek as just the phone by itself. I thought a replacement battery cover that sticks to the magnet would be perfect. So... does anyone know of any? Or perhaps a vendor that could custom-machine one?

I made my own magnetic car holder solution. Didn't cost much and can't imagine it work better than this...
I can't see what you've done there... It looks like some sort of metal on the battery itself, so that the regular cover works fine... What is that? How is it affixed?

Ohh! Good point! I would have completely forgotten about them and then been really screwed - I actually have to run my mobile through an X-ray every day at work... That could be an issue. Oh well - back to the drawing board...

I really wouldn't recommend directly attaching the phone to strong magnetic sources. It may impede the functionality, reduce or affect the battery operation, interfere with the many antennas in the phone, not to mention run the risk of corrupting memory sticks etc?
The phone itself isnt that heavy so probably wouldnt need a strong magnet, but you'd want to use something quite strong just to hold it in place. Imagine driving over a speed bump or pot hole which dislodges the phone and makes it go sliding across your dash board and out of an open window. (worst case scenario..)
If youre looking for a quick release holder I would recommend something that you clip the phone into like those hip holsters and then find one that has a socket connection to a window mount.

I used the same razors and the same magnet (This one) with my SE P1i for 1½ year without any issues.
And the phone doesn't move 1 mm even driving over the biggest speed bump in Sweden.

I honestly couldn't think of one thing that a magnet could have an effect on in the phone, certainly not the memory. The only type of memory that is affected by magnets are HDD (because the data on the disks is stored magnetically) and credit cards (once again, data stored magnetically). However, RAM/ROM is completely different and relies on gates and latches to store data, neither affected by magnet. Not to mention even if it did have an HDD (like old school mp3 players/iPod) it would take a strong magnet (mainly electromagnet) to corrupt the memory. Likewise, I can't foresee it having any affect on the battery or interfering with the antenas (unless you're using some super strong magnet....which you're likely not)
One of the only build quality problems i have with the Touch HD is that the battery cover creaks when pressed in certain spots.
To revive this topic, does anybody know of an actual aftermarket battery cover for this phone, preferably metal?
I searched google to find no results. It seems like it would be a good idea to make these
You can also shave the inside of the battery cover with a small sander. Than add ANY kind of magnet that will than fit inside the cover. The plastic cover is THICK so you can shave enough for some type of magnet.
I would also like a metal/rubber etc back cover. The quality of the orginal cover is driving me nuts..

Hey I would also like to have a backcover for Blackstone with out a camera hole.. heard about non camera versions of phones in US not sure.. I work for a MNC IT company in India as a Oracle DBA so camera mobiles are not allowed in my company.
Please help me if you have any idea on this.

Why not just pop open the phone and remove the camera?
The bondo idea was the best, you could buy a new phone cover, chop out a section of the old one and use bondo to secure it, sand it down and it should look stock.

So in this area, you cannot carry a camera, but you can carry a sound recorder and 2-way communication device? Sounds odd.
I mounted a thin metal plate to the whole flat section of the back of my G1 so I could stick it to a large neo magnet that is glued to the dash in my truck. I don't care about the compass not working. Plus, I have tested it after about 6 months. If I put a regular back on it the compass still works great. No lasting effects.
I used the side of an old computer case. Cut out the shape I needed. I cut out a hole for the camera and speaker but you could just cover the camera and leave the speaker free. After I got everything smooth, I gave the whole thing a brushing with 150 grit sand paper in a uniform direction. Then I put it on my kitchen stove top on high for about 5 min to blue the metal. It gives it a great finish that resists rusting and isn't sticky or easily scratched like paint.

I am amazed that sticking your phone to a big-ass magnet all day has no lasting effects..
None what so ever. GPS works great. Accelerometer works great. Doesn't affect storage or memory. Again, I took the back cover off after about 6 mo. Compass works fine. Must be because it's solid state.

very easy way would be to peel the piece of glass off the back of the phone cover and replace it with a piece of sheetmetal so they know there isnt a hole in it. you can get scraps from pretty much anywhere and shape them with a dremel...
Ok so on the tilt 2 it has a strap/charm hole to put well a strap or charm on ur phone, and i used it alot! But recently the little plastic piece in the hole that holds the charm/strap snapped off on mine, Does anyone have any good suggestions on what I could do, I'm rather clumsy so a strap is rather needed

that is so obvious is not for a strap!, the only thing i can come up with is that is for some kind attachment whole for like an accesory or maybe a craddle, but definetly not a strap, i dont think, lol

Looks like the holder is part of the phone frame. If the little T-shaped tab broke off, you may be SOL on fixing it. Perhaps you could buy a broken Tilt 2 off eBay (I've seen them) and transfer the part, but taking a phone apart and putting it back together correctly is not an easy task.
I never would have guessed that hole was for a strap or charm, although that's quite apparently what its for. The T-shaped tab under the battery covers sure doesn't look strong enough for the purpose.

oh... so you can wear the phone as a pendant... ya cause its so small and light i might mistake it for a necklace...
Same thing happened to me - I keep thinking how lucky I am it didn't go flying when it broke. I was able to loop the hanger through the square just to the left of where the "t" was - I can provide a pic shortly. Its been working so far...

I never, ever would have guessed that that hole was for hanging the little charms off of. I once wondered why this phone didn't come with something like that when most phones did.

Wow that's great. Does anybody know where to find a strap that would be good to wear my Tilt2 around my neck please? It would be great for working while wearing a wired headset. Hate keeping it in my pocket and I'm not happy with any of the holsters. Especially that oem one. That sucker will help a guy lose his phone in a hurry...
EDIT; Nevermind. I figured out to search for the words phone and lanyard on ebay. Decisions, desisions.
Memory card lanyards work fine too. I'm using a lanyard for a SanDisk MicroSD adapter for my phone. It works great.
Whoa, that little plastic bit holding the weight of a Tilt 2 on a lanyard or wrist strap? Sounds like tempting fate to me. I never have used a wrist strap on a phone and this definitely doesn't inspire me to try it now, lol. HTC should have built something a little more substantial than that into the frame if they wanted it to be really useful as a hanging point for the phone. I have been wondering where the strap on the HTC accessory page was supposed to attach, now I know.

You are correct. It does look cheesy. However, so far so good. I do think it is important to be certain that the string of the lanyard is seated to the base of the "T" opening really well. Fortunately that is easy to pull off. Also I don't think I'd swing it around by the lanyard with the cover off. After a few weeks of using a wrist strap and a neck lanyard I don't see any signs of stress on the plastic. So maybe it will hold out.
I find this to be extraordinarily strange, but my Note 8 has become magnetic. Small metal objects to the back of it. My concern is dangerous. Can't afford another "Note-Gate" hazard.
Is anyone experiencing this or does anyone have any insight on this phenomena?

It is probably from using a magnet mount. The coils of the wireless charging is copper so it will be able to conduct things over time probably. Did not notice this until my brother mentioned that he can use a magnetic mount without a metal plate on his SG9+.
I don't use a magnet mount though. I can't think of any time I've placed it on a magnet. it's not impossible but I don't recall any such conditions. Thanks for your insights though. that's the best lead I have so far which makes sense

Speakers, monitors, and many other household things have magnetic fields too... My automatic watches often get magnetized by them. If you have a cheap compass, put it next to a speaker and watch the needle move
The question then is: "Is it dangerous and will it cause my battery life to deplete faster?" Any thoughts on that?

Hmm I wouldn't think so, but I can't say for sure. Phones do have a magnetic field to begin with, so I figure a little extra magnetism isn't too bad.

Just tried it and yes, mine is also magnetic. But I don't think it became magnetic, I think there is simply a magnetic spot there by design from begin on. It's not so near the s-pen, so I don't think it has anything to do with it. The Speaker is not very far away, so this could be it, but I'm not convinced.
The magnetic field is quite strong, I think too strong for such a small speaker, but maybe the magnet serves some other purpose? Idk, but very interesting.
Will look up some tear down videos, to figure this out.
EDIT: After looking at the tear down videos, it has to be the speaker.
I realized mine was magnetic too when it would stick to my magnetic car mount without having the special plate lol

Yeah, magnetic fields are not dangerous at all and this field is not there by accident but by design because of the speaker. The Note 7 is a different story though...

There is a magnet behind the screen there. Its used for the smart cover. If you put a weak magnet over that spot it should put your phone to sleep. The cover has a corresponding magnet in that location.
Ignore this, I had a crappy connection, I thought that was the front of your phone. Got a clearer look at the video, pretty sure that's the speaker.

You know what, maybe I should go ahead and call them, just ask Sammy's tech team about the issue. I'm not absolutely convinced that the magnetism was fully intended by Samsung. It held up for a few seconds without the plate. Just the phone itself but then it slides off
It was a valid recall. We just wanna be sure about what's going on. The Note line is fantastic and is to be respected, but let the discussion happen so we can all know if all is well or not. It would be great to know that it's nothing. :good:
Edit: A friend of mine says he is almost positive that there is a magnet there for the S-pen

The S-Pen utilses an electromagnetic grid to power it. That is probably what is causing this.
try to bake it, it will become not only magnetic, but also electric, with sparks, lol

I have a Question, not about Software for Samsung S8, so that's the Point for me to register here.
Hope that is the right Place in this Forum for my Question.
In the Future i plan to buy a S8 second hand. My Money is small so the most second hand S8 are in need of repair (Frontglas & Backcovers). Nothing what a Human with skills can handle. But i want to mod the S8 on the Side of Hardware.
Here is my Question:
Is it possible to make a Backcover from Aluminium and to use it instead of Glascover?
My thinking is to get a Originalcover and then to rebuild one from Aluminium (Thin it must be). CNC, or Lasercut for the precision.
I've googled many hours in the Hope to find something like this, but nothing.
So i want to ask you.
I think a Backcover from Alu ist not so breakable as Glas, more stable, but is it to realize without elektrical Danger to Part of the Phone.
I don't like the Cases & Bumpers & so on. I want to make my Phone more personal.
Are my thoughts crazy, or not? What do you think?

Interesting idea! Personally I would go with a skin like dbrand or slikwrap even if the glass is broken. Personal look and you don't lose any wireless functionality

I ask myself: is a Alu-BC thick enough to protect the Phone like the Glas-BC?
Or must can i use a Metall-BC instead Alu? I don't know.
The other thing is: you must remove the Original-BC to apply the, maybe stronger, Mod-BC. But if the S8 has no Guarantee you can make it like you wish.
Glas-Cover looks great, but i've seen so much broken S8s to buy in Ebay-Second Hand Shop, so i wondering, why nobody change the BC of the Phone to avoid the use of Cases, etc.
With a well designed Metall / Alu-BC it must be better, i think. Maybe you can make it less slippery for your Hands, too.
But: is there Dangers for electrical Parts of the Phone, i mean short circuit between Parts? In wich Way it affects the NFC Functions, etc.?

That's a Point! The Function of the Phone shall be at 100%, so i think i must look and read about Phones with Metall-BC AND Wireless Charging how they doing it.
There would be a chance the metal backing by witch one would have to possibly custom make curves and all. But may dampen WiFi bluetooth and wireless signals. Anything other than plastic glass or aluminum I would imagine would interfere with wireless charging as well. Absorbing or warping the magnetic field
But I would say if a man could bend the edges properly a hand held rotary tool would more than likely suffice to do all edging and cutouts for various sensors. I have had to make due with home made metal object before but precision be on this is a must. As water resistance is more than like gone with the wind on this mod.....

I agree with this
A plastic back would make much more sense as it would bend easier than metal for the corners while allowing for wireless charging and not causing any kind of electrical shorting issues.

A Fullbody-Cover protects the Phone completly (Front+Back), but on the other Side it is more thicker, unhandy. Often the Buttons are not good to press, and such things.
if you insist on aluminium/metal, then you are going to have to give up some functionalities. otherwise, plastics would be your only option. wood might be a viable option too, however durability would be an issue with the material.
imho though, you mentioned that you have limited money and if you're going to get an aluminium/metal/wood back cover machined by someone, it's going to cost more than you would think. replacement glass are way cheaper and as the other user suggested, you have vinyl wraps to get the look that you want
