[Rumors] finally some "real" rumors about the Z5 Ultra - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

As the title mentions rumors about the succesor for our ultra. I'm really anticipating on a succesor, i use my ultra now for 2 years. At this moment there is for me still no proper replacement on the market. If the rumors are true, i've found mine replacement
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/83269/20150910/sony-xperia-z5-ultra-with-snapdragon-820-chip-4k-display-23mp-camera-coming-march-2016.htm
Didn't read anything yet about a flash, but i can't imagine that they make such a monumental mistake again.

i can wait all day till they release Z5 ultra
I also have had this phone for 2 years now, and before that I use to upgrade my phones every 6-9months.. now I can't get over this phone

Article's description is too good to be true... The specs are awesome... Lets pray they release the real successor for our device!

Rumour like this have been spread all over the years since the Ultra came out. Most of em are click baits for more traffic to their websites or some people's imagination to 'satisfy' themselves since it is likely that the Ultra is Sony's first and last attempt of making a true phablet.
I personally think we won't see another 6.4 inch until the stylus game is making a comeback.

That's EXACTLY what I'm experiencing.
Galaxy S6, Note 5, Nexus 6, LG G4, Z5, HTC ONE, all fantastic performers, but....... Not a single one could convince me to leave the Ultra.
I've actually been tempted to buy another one just in case... [emoji16]
I desperately hope that Sony will not leave us hanging longer, 2.5 years are enough.
And as I said before, the Ultra was presented as a TOP performer, first with SD800, and reviewed by all as a beast, as a nerd wet dream, regardless of the flaws (big, awful camera, no flash etc).
They couldn't present it now with the SD810, it wasn't "one of a kind".
I just hope they're waiting the new processor and MWC to unveil the next gen of this beast.
I'm currently rocking a GPe based rom (Hybrid by Uncle Lucifer), and NOTHING is smoother.
Just imagine what could possibly be with SD820 and 4GB ram... [emoji33]
I personally don't care about the camera. If it's there, good, if it's a 13mpx, well that's enough for me.
I want a powerful device with a superb screen, and if they can make it smaller with the same 6.44 screen, good, if they can't and it's thicker with more battery, good, if they can't do that either and make it exactly the same phone with upgraded internals, I'm good with that too. [emoji16]

You just described my thought process  I've read all the reviews, and always come to the same conclusion. All the devices feel as i have to make to many compromises. And also i was thinking to buy a second one in case of something worse happened with the one i'm using.

I remember everybody going on laughing at how big of a phone it is, I can't even begin to describe the mockery at work once I got it; then everybody tried it, and their freaking mouths went shut, and then open wide at how beautiful of a device it is.
It's big, yeah we get it, but it's slim, elegant, it makes you go "wow" once you play with it and also go "meh" every time you try something else.
I get that people want 5.5 screens, no bezels, something you can use with one hand, cameras that can spot an hair on a fly at 5 meters away, but those guys are not me.
SD820 might be the way for Sony to show once again they can pull off a trick with a device so powerful and so beautiful that you can't even begin to think to go somewhere else.
No matter what other OEMs have to offer.
No matter what other people say.
They should have a survey on Ultra owners, I bet that 90% of us would never change OEM if Sony guarantees a new Ultra every 2 years.

Galaxy Note 3 , will you buy it?

I'm patiently waiting for the c6806 but now that the galaxy note 3 is being announced and will be out early October , i might just jump ship and buy the note .Waiting for the LTE version is just painfully slow!
Build quality & the display is too small.
In the end the hardware pro's (ram, slightly higher clocking, cam) of the SGN3 are not compensating this for my requirements, as the performance of the XZU is still astonishing and i'm using my phone only for snapshots.
But your case is exactly showing the becalming situation Samsung has - people love to buy it anyway.
i almost bought the c6802 and live with the 3g connection but im pretty sure i'll be banging my head if the LTE version comes out, blaming myself that i should have waited .
LTE to me is the now technology and 3G is just not acceptable in my vocabulary .

100% agree with you in every aspects. I even if was waiting for the LTE version would never go for a Note 3. Those phone only can be compared on the performances. Size and build quality are really different.

Absolutely not.
I've seen the conferences yesterday, and both Sony and Samsung haven't entertained me.
I mean, Sony has great products but tends to lay them out without any heart at all.
On the other end, Samsung has no innovation at all, but from their point of view it seems they're presenting the Holy Grail to the public year after year.
I have an S3, which is a great device, but on the right and on the bottom the "metal" bezel cut itself for no reason at all. It is 1 year old. And I paid FULL PRICE for this. And by full I mean that it costed me almost as much as a 6833.
I don't want Samsung to fill me with bs telling me the SPen is excellent, that the battery is interchangeable, that this, that that. I already know all that.
And i don't give a damn anymore.
ZU is progression, SW2 too, hell even the SBH52 impressed me more than the N3.
I'm gonna get on board with Sony, and whenever I'll see a guy with his Note 3 I'll say "Hey man, nice phone, I hope you're happy with what you got", not feeling envious, not feeling sorry for not buying it.
Because in the end, what YOU feel with your phone matters, not that extra 0.1ghz or that 1gb of ram.
Let's face it, about 1 out of 1000 Note3 or S4 users will root or even use their device to the fullest. The rest of them will simply feel happy that they can update their Facebook status saying 'I have a Note 3! Sweet! ", until they're not happy again when their friends buy something more powerful/stylish/popular.
I prefer being a 1 percenter, with a device that makes me smile, than being a 99 one, with the regret that I could have bought something more.
But hey, that's just my 2 cents.

There are 2 face on that medal you know...
On one face, Samsung hasn't always been keen with developers, not releasing sources and all, BUT thousands of people buy those, and as a result a lot of developers choose the device they develop on based on popularity, and on the fact that developing there would be more of a challenge.
On the other face, Sony has always been open with the developer community, but their popularity has started to grow big not that long ago, so we might have on the ZU the same level of devs there are on the Z.
As a matter of fact, some of them already started (just take a look on the Android development section), and that is even before the LTE version launched.
Let's wait for UK, US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc. all have this device on their shelves, I have big expectations.

well, after viewing the Note 3 "coming out" party yesterday, I decided I am not interested in it...
I had a note 1, and a Note 2, which was a major upgrade to the note 1.
Fantastic phone, and I was hoping the Note 3 would be a major "upgrade" as well; but, the only upgrades, CPU speed, 3 gigs of Ram, and 13 MP camera isnt going to make the experience on the Note 3 that much better than the note 2.
I've been watching the Xperia Z Ultra since it came out, and, it looks like a fantastic phone; I am a big guy, so the size doesnt scare me, but I am waiting to see which US carriers will be carrying it.
I have owned at least 50 cell phones in my life, but mysteriously, NONE of them have been Sony phones, but I think this will change in the next 30 days.
It doesnt seem like there is alot of development on this phone yet, but, since many note 2 owners feel similiar to me, I am certain that there will be a large groupl that will move to this phone, once some US carriers are announced.
The quality of this phone seems fantastic; not sure if no flash for the camera will affect picture quality, and, hopefully, easy root/bootloader unlocking is just around the corner, since the sound from that tiny speaker appears to be lousy as well, but nothing that ViperMod or a different kernel wont fix!
The main problem SGN2 had and SGN3 as per first hands on, pics and vids also seems to have is, that - even if it is already to small for me as an Note 2 user - they're not making proper use of the screen size with view to UI on stock ROM.
In the end the Note 2 was and is just a sized up Galaxy.
And 2nd market (custom roms) is not a criterion on this topic for me, because if i have to customize the the product from day 1 to meet my needs, then there's something wrong and i'll better wait for the right deal.

Another user on another forum posted that maybe a real change will be seen when all S3s end their contract.
That's true for the S4 (they sold a lot less than what they were expecting), I was expecting it and I didn't fall for that.
That's true for the N3 too, as is a specced up S4 with SPen functions.
It will sell regardless of all this thoughts, but I could bet 1 out of 5 previous N2 owners will buy this N3, and the other 4 will scout around for a better choice or wait for the N4.
That's what I was planning to do skipping the iPhone 4 for the 5 (having the 3G), but Samsung stunned me with the S3 and I jumped ship.
I waited for a big change from the S3 to the S4, but I was ready to wait for the N3 this time.
Sony stunned me since they presented the ZU, I fell in love and that's it.
The only thing that would make me love even more this device would be having a stock-Google Play Edition.
That would be AWESOME.
Last but not least for the fact that we won't need implementation for the SPen, because the screen accept pens and pencils on its own...

Pretty much agree with most posts. I've had the Note & Note 2 (using HTC One now) & the Note 3 doesn't do it for me. I really hate Touchwiz. Everything about it annoys me so I've run custom roms on all my Samsung phones. I don't use the s pen at all either so it just sits there.
I like the direction Sony are heading. I would prefer a smaller bezel but I really like the waterproof design & the minimal additions to Android.
I really don't see why Samsung are the Android leaders...

Advertising, advertising, and advertising. Oh, I forgot about advertising.
They could sell a smart ring for your toe advertising it as the next companion for the summer for getting rid of fungus because it has a 5mpx camera that scans the pavement before you set your foot on it.
Everybody would simply love it.

Z Ultra Life Expectancy

Ok, Damn it. This is really starting to become an expensive habit!
Do you plan on keeping your Xperia Z Ultra for a full 12 months?
I've been enjoying this phone, so far so good! Every year I tell myself "this time I'm gonna stick with this one for at least a year" . However it just doesn't seem to workout that way. 2 years with one device seems impossible now, so I'm targeting a full year! I think I'll replace this ZU with another Xperia device if the successor is regal!
Had my Note 1 for a full 3 years before upgrading to the Ultra. Briefly considered the Note 2, but was not interested, so took the Note 8 as a companion, and sold that in 3 months together with the Note 1 to fund for the Ultra, since the Note 3 was not screen-sized to my liking
Perhaps 2 years, seeing the missus is giving me the evil eye (the Note 1 was a gift from her!)
I had around 4 phones last 3 years. But I think i will keep the Ultra for at least 2 years. It is big enough, fast enough, has storage enough. There is nothing i want more. I use the samsung C pen at the side of the pool. It works perfect for me.
I kept my original HTC Evo 4G for a little over three years, and that was back during the period in which each new round of flagship phones had significantly better specs than the last. Now that hardware differentiation is slowing down, I don't think it will be any problem for me to keep the Z Ultra for a full two years. The only thing that might make it difficult for me would be a significantly improved Z Ultra 2.
Sent from my Xperia Z Ultra using xda app-developers app
This is the second device for me this year. Which is about average. I do reviews of products and then make a few videos about them, and then usually sell them after 3/4 months.
But as for the Ultra... I think I can see me using it until the next ultra comes out.. (or something equally as beautiful but with a better camera)
This device has been the best all round smartphone I've had, with a better camera it would have been perfect!! so... looking forward to the Ultra 2...
In the last three years I have had six devices..I think. I still use my One X as my alarm and toilet mp3 player while taking a dump. My plan for my Z Ultra is two years starting November 7th but I pretty much already know that I will buy a blackberry phone or a smaller device to use along with my ZU but not completely replacing it.
I used to buy new phones every 3 to 4 months, but iOS and Android changed that. I had my Note for two years, but that was only because I couldn't find a good replacement (the Note 2 wasn't a big enough upgrade), but the Ultra is, so I'll keep it at least for a year, and we'll see if anything interesting pops up after that.

I've generally changed phones about every two to three weeks. Which.. Isn't a good thing I don't think lol I always either trade them or sell them and use that money to buy another. In this case though, I feel like I've finally hit a device that is unique enough that nothing else would be able to replace in quite the same way. The screen real estate on this isn't just like using a Note.. The Note really just feels like a blown-up phone, and I hate that. The UI on tablet/phones usually just stretches everything out instead of properly using the 1080p resolution, which is something that this phone's UI does well, even down to the soft keys. So, I'm hoping that I can keep this phone at least for half a year before moving on to the next phone.. Based on the fact that it is basically an excuse for me to be able to carry a tablet around and call it a "phone."
But yeah, my goal is six months.. lol but that would be nothing short of a miracle. As of now though I do want to sell this C6802 and buy myself a C6833 with some accidental insurance from Sony. Then keep that. But, for the time being, extremely happy with this.
Sent from my C6802 using Tapatalk
For me, I wish I can stay with my Z Ultra for at least 6 months. I changed phone regularly. The last phone that I've used more than 6 months is Note 2. Subsequently I used Nexus 4 for a month and Xperia Z for 2 months plus. I think Z Ultra is an all rounded device, the issue is just the so so camera. Not so interested on other popular flagships like Note 3 and G2 so I think I'll continue using Z Ultra for some while.

The note 1 was only released in 2011
I had my note since release (around two years) and it lasted well as the note 3 wasn't really much of an upgrade. I can't see the z ultra lasting as long though as it's not as well roinded a device particularly the poor camera, no flash led and the sealed in battery.

I've had my my Note 2 for just 7 mos, Nexus 4 for 6 mos, Nexus 7 for 4 mos. Sold all of 'em due to uncontrolled circumstances, but I'm planning to keep my XZU for as long as I can. I think I'm very much satisfied with it. But I'm also planning on getting a backup phone, Maybe a Z1 or just an SP. Definitely, not going back to Samsung.

Indeed. I've used Samsung for most of my other smartphones, but this region locking and authentication chips for accessories is just a pure cash grab at the cost of convenience for the consumer.
This is something that we should never support and should let samsung know with our wallets.
I'm hoping to keep this until the next Ultra is about to come out and I'll sell this and get something else, maybe a Note 3 or some oddball "phablet" and then sell that to get the Ultra 2. I haven't kept a phone for longer than a year since I started getting smartphones, and recently it's been less than that.
I love this phone, but have to admit I'm interested by the Lumia 1520 as it's the first high end windows phone and I'd love to see what it's like...

Yea I couldn't get into the plastic/plastic design. I really never liked the galaxy design after the SGS2. I like the more squared design of the GS4 & Note 3, but it Sony got this design perfect! They dropped the ball in a few areas, but this screen is so large I think it's the saving grace. I believe this will keep me content as 6.4 will probably be matched by few!
It's Difficult to downgrade on screen size, I'm sure all of us considered Z1 at some point. But after a 5.5" note, I couldn't imagine using a 5.0" Z1 including on-screen buttons.... Noooo Wayyy....

[Q] Is the Z ultra still worth buying? Did you guys get used to the size?

Hey guys,
so I've been eyeballing with the Z ultra since last year september or something. It was around the time my Note 2 broke and I needed a new phone.
However a few months after it was released the price was just too high (~600€) for me to afford - . So I went with the Nexus5 which was released for only 350 Euros and I really needed a phone back then. Now the ZU is half the price (300€). Interesting price development which really implies that this phone realls isnt for everyone.
so I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about daily usage of the phone - mostly in terms of Size. When sitting somewhere, standing and stuff, I dont care about the size but when moving around I'm afraid it would get impractical.
Does it fit in your trouser-poket at all?
Or you guys mostly put it in the pocket of the Jacket?
Do you always have to wear a small bag to go out with the phone?
How do you carry it when its hot? (Maybe someone who bought it in a hot place since it was released in the fall)
On the other hand, there is the Note 3, which is currently available for 360€ (weekend offer, normally 450€). So I'm really strugglin with the choice of which device to get. If the ZU size is really dealable i'd definitely prefer it over the N3. I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience.
(I know there have been rumors, whether there's gonna be a Z2 Ultra or not but looking at the price (which would be like 700 on release) I don't think I that the new Z2U would matter to me until 2015.)

So many posts like yours. Please search? But anyway, here's my answer. Yes it is still worth to buy. The development curve has been reaching plateau for a while so it will still be fast for 1-2years to the future. As for carrying i just bring it into my chest pocket and no damn given..

Phone is definitely big but easily pocketable in all but the slimmest of pants. Personally i sold mine partly because of the size. After three months of ownership i just wanted something much smaller to move around with.
But to answer ur question it is still one of the most powerful out there. Even the z2ultra i suspect will be a minor spec bump over the original much like the z2 is over the z1. I say go for it.

I'm sorry, I wasnt sure what to search for, so I went for the keyword "pocket" and only found about how much people had no trouble having it in their pocket.
However I would rather like to know about what kind of pockets you use. Does it always have to be the Jacket? What about when wearing shorts?
How about the situation when you're in the office and wanna go get some coffee and dont need your jacket or bag?
Thanks for the answer.

Thank you for your answer.
So you're saying it fits but it makes you feel uncomfortable when moving around with it in your (trouser)pocket?
Just to put it plain and simple if you want to buy the Z Ultra because of how comfortable it fits in your pocket then I suggest you move on.
Its like saying you wanna buy a Ferrari but but are afraid that it might be too fast.
depends...
I live in a tropical island where the only two types of weather we get is hot and scorching. As such clothing is light the majority if the time. as such the only real option is a pants pocket which fits comfortably but you still know its there with every step. Honestly its not as bad as I may be making it sound but its really up to personal preference. If possible find someone you know who has one and see how it feels to you.
Personally after owning many phones of varying sizes I've found that my preference is an smaller phone (my Lumia 820 is the perfect size) and now I have a larger tablet for media consumption and general use. Usage scenario preferences vary from person to person. The only real way to know what is best for you is to try them all. Its a bit of a hassle and maybe a little expensive but its the foolproof way.

After using the Z ultra for a couple weeks it doesn't really seem big anymore. I could even go a little bigger.

Had it since December, and much the same- I could stand going up to 6.5" or even a 7" screen as a phablet.
Only thing I might ever switch to is those Asus Padfones (Or Phonepads? Can't remember which one is which). Those ones that let you stick their phone into a tablet. Sounds nice and the best of both worlds, but the only one that's come up into the US is a 7" one, which just isn't worth the effort (Plus, I don't know if they work with custom firmware, so...).
had in when first time arrive on my county with cost almost 570 Euro, till now im still proud with my ZU, its never let me down.
check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2666638
The ZU is still very relevant. It has the S800, 2GB RAM a 1080p display and other high-end specifications. It seems like the mobile world has plateaued lately, and there are really no "must have" features coming up, as far as I'm concerned. The Snapdragon 801 and 805 are the new SoCs, but they are only marginally better than the 800, so there's really no reason to upgrade. QHD screens? Sure, if you want to get poor battery life. The pixels are rising, but the battery capacity is not.
Upcoming devices:
- Galaxy S5: 2014 ugliest phone (IMO) and it looks like Samsung is checking how many stupid people are out there.
- The New HTC One (M8): Not officially announced yet, but we've pretty much seen the whole thing already, including in a 14 minute German video review yesterday. Nothing special.
Xperia Z2: Looks really nice, but not worth it if you're currently owning an S800 device.
Xperia Z2 Ultra(?): Will probably be announced this summer like last year. Will probably run the 801, 3GB RAM and an updated design. Most people, including me, will probably want it, but it's not worth it. It's like when I had the Galaxy Note and the Note 2 arrived. It wasn't worth the upgrade.

The XZU C6833 is one of my favorite phablet phones on 2013 and 2014.
Still worth the purchase. Plus im having fun with it when I see a tiny iphone. Haha I'd like to tease my girlfriend but she does used my device more now than her iphone. The text and viewing content has been excellent

The phone is indeed pocket-able even in the tightest of pants if your a guy, most female pants have much shallower pockets and thus my sister isnt able to fit my phone into her pockets.
The thing is that although it fits sitting becomes cumbersome as the pants constrict the phone and pushes it towards your leg so i often have it out when i know im going to sit for long periods of time. Also it is a pain when you have to take it out of your pockets under your jacket.
In insanely hot climates, like 35 degrees C the phone is also uncomfortable...especially if you sweat.
In comparison to the n3, i would say that the ZU has a nicer build, and also a larger screen. LCD is an added bonus if you prefer it over amoled. Plus its also water resistant which makes it useful when rainy/when bathing. Also, the lack of touch-wiz is also a bonus
But the n3 has (in my opinion) a more optimized OS for a larger screen such as multiwindow (yes i realize sony has tiny apps but its just not the same), better speakers, and a better camera. Plus a smaller amoled screen.
If the waterproof-ness and larger screen appeal more to you i would suggest the ZU, otherwise i myself would've chosen the note 3 as amoled is my preferred screen tech. Hope this helps...
Have had the phone for a few months, and pretty much doubt I'll go with anything with a smaller screen in the future. If the ZU2 ends up being only a minor upgrade as I and some others are expecting, I'll probably wait for the ZU3...saves me shelling out $$$ everyone 6-12 months
Not the perfect phone, but the only one out with most of what I was after in a handset.
Its summer all year round in my country and the phone is anytime cooler than the weather lol.
I carry the phone in my sling bag so I go for the biggest screen that's available for me.
Performance and spec for the ZU will last another 2 years before it becomes obselete so definitely worth getting for the price now. I remembered getting the ZU on day one and it costs about USD 900.
Some other upcoming models in the 5.5 -7 inch region you can consider might be
Oppo Find 7 (5.5 inch 2k display, Snapdragon 801, 3GB, 32GB )
Huawei MediaPad X1 LTE (7inch 1,920 x 1,200 LTPS, Arms Cortex A9 Soc, 2GB, 16GB)
Vivo Xplay 3S (6 inch 2k display, Snapdragon 800, 3GB, 32GB)
I think that it is safe to say that the Z Ultra is by far the best product in the 6" screen-size range (let's face it, the alternatives are not even close in terms of quality...). So, if screen size is a factor for you as it is for many of us, go for it, you will not regret this.

****, I just across an announcement on ZTE Nubia X6 just now. The spec is amazing
6.4inch FHD
Snapdragon 801
3gb ram
128gb internal
Dual sim support 3g and LTE
4000mh battery
13mp camera
This is truly a ZU contender.

I get what you mean but there's always a struggle between quality and spec. The lada will cross the finish line first that's what some people go for.

Like Sony said, difference is in detail, Sony detail

Is an Ultra Z still applicable in 2014?

Hello
I have been interested in an Ultra Z since the first day it's launched but never ended up having one due to a main reason. With a huge screen on the device it is every graphic designer's dream to be able to draw naturally like paper and pencil. Unfortunately it doesn't work as well as the Galaxy Note series.
Now that I have gotten myself a Galaxy Note Pro, my quest in searching for a device that allows natural handwriting and drawing is over. Yet the Ultra Z remains a attractive device and the price has dropped significantly. I think the lack of purchase has causes the price drop faster than many other flagship phones from last year. Nevertheless with just AUD350 the phone has become even more attractive.
I am just wondering if you Ultra Z users think if it is a sane decision to buy a phone that is a year old now? Are there now better alternatives out there with a similar screen size? Also has Sony mentioned if the phone is reaching its end of life soon (including Google Play Edition)?
Sent from my SM-P905 using Tapatalk
I'm thinking the same as yourself, as it is becoming more affordable here in the US as well.
Seen it as inexpensive as $250, either new or gently used.
Only negative is no LED for flash, which means no light for emergency use.
I'm looking for an inexpensive LTE mobile phone, this MIGHT BE IT.
Another negative; no removable battery.

If you have no real use for a camera, then yes this phone is still a beast.

”screen flashlight ” in the Google play store works pretty well on our Z ultra.
I've had mine for about a year now, and it's still a very powerful device. You won't have any issues with running apps and games. Keep in mind that we also have the Google Play Edition of the Ultra, and it will receive Android L fairly quickly after release, and we'll be able to port it to our model.
Screen is still very good, battery life is (still) good, camera is not great, and performance is top notch. It was worth it to me when I paid $1000 for it a year ago, and it's definitely worth it now.
Check out the reviews and stuff on YouTube or something if you're still not sure.
I was afraid at first i thought it will be too big. But now i can imagine myself having smaller Screen even samsung Note seems small now, Too small.
As it has been said, if don't care for the Camera much Z Ultra is the Best.

Depends on how you look at it. If performance is the metric, you won't be disappointed. if you use camera extensively, well look elsewhere. and the last one, the battery life. It's quite good but if you compare with devices nowadays, there are better alternative. I'd say wait for the Z3X (if ever) in about a month. If it doesn't come up, then i can imagine the Z Ultra will be cheaper along the way.
Thank you all for your inputs!
I personally do not use mobile cameras for artistic purposes. I already have a Dslr so the camera is only for note-taking or public transport schedule. I think I just want a phone that is slightly faster than my HTC M7. It's true that there are better performers out there since this is a year old phone but any faster CPU than a Z Ultra has little to do with my uses.
Also there isn't a mobile phone at the moment that is as massive as this. I love the idea that I could read books with it in my bed. The Galaxy Note Pro is too heavy to hold in the hand for a long period of time.
The only bummer is the speaker. I have been spoiled by the M7's speakers for a year plus, very little devices top its superb sound quality. It will be the only downgrade for me should I go for this phone.

Is this legit? How long does a flagship Xperia unit has before it reaches EOL?
18 months supposedly. The Z Ultra should receive L, but the Z3 and Z2 should get it first. I would guess at least a few months or more after L is released.

I am pretty sure that the GPe will get L quickly since one of the key reasons for the program is almost Nexus updates. Google will push the L to Sony soon after official release.
All GPe devices should have L shortly after the Nexus series and I haven't seen any indication to the contrary.
It is also important to remember that Ultra GPe is vanilla Android with just the EQ added (Sony ClearAudio) and otherwise identical to a Nexus.

Since the Ultra's release, Sony has already pushed out a few prompt updates for it. I personally do not think this device is any type of priority for them. We will be damn lucky to get another update imo, and after we do, I wouldnt expect any more.
If it was Google handling the updates, things might be different, but this is a two generation old Sony device, not a Nexus. It is very close to EOL.

That'd suck if it's not getting L. HTC has confirmed even the M7 which was released before Ultra will get L
However Ultra hasn't been selling as well as they'd like they have probably even given up on releasing a successor.

Recently, got a Z Ultra (from a Mega 6.3). Don't regret it for the most part. Screen isn't the brightest in direct sunlight (not that the mega was that much better), Camera quality isn't as good as my mega imo, sound is lower (that my mega) I'm assuming because of the waterproofing, and kinda a fingerprint magnet. Other than that no complaints.

Normally 18 months?. I would think the GPe will get L before the Sony ZU. it was months before we got 4.4, although we did get 4.4.4 very fast
Just bought a second hand for AU$300. This shady guy sold me one with overheat issue. The phone isn't even very hot but it just freezes on me and stuck in boot loop.
BOOT LOOPS, My Favorite Breakfast Cereal!
The reason may well be because of the fact the BEAST is having one of America's favorite breakfast cereals...Boot Loops! After several minutes of this heat is generated in the upper left corner around the camera area. Liken it to running around a track numerous times - it takes a toll on it/you physically.
I've read it on one of the threads several times over the months just after the XZU became available as a GPe. Many new users were trying to root, flash ROM's, and fix the partitions since they're different on the GPe's and their devices suffered the boot loops too.
Download Flashtool, run a TA Backup and then flash a stock .ftf if that's what your looking to do. Providing this device is not HOT. Why would one sell a BEAST of a device with a bad case of the boot loops to begin with? Better yet why on earth would you buy one in that condition? All kinds of flags would've/should've been raised - didn't you even question how it got that way or why it was in that state to begin with?
They have these bad boys are selling for $314.99 at http://www.expansys-usa.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-c6833-unlocked-lte-16gb-black-251963/ in the United States. Expansys sells internationally direct from the comfort of your own safe and legal hideout. THAT would've been a more prudent thing to do AND you would've gotten a warranty on top of it!
Just sayin'

[Q] moving on from the ultra. going Moto X Style

anyone else looked at this phone? seems like a decent replacement and not too small.
if not, what else are people moving onto?
given up on sony releasing
I'm just looking at nexus, blackberry if the rumors is true that they will move on to android, or the classic HTC.
HTC is probably the manufacturer you can't go wrong with. If you look at this part of the XDA forum..its filled with devs making roms and kernels.
I think s810 is just temporarily. Maybe next year there will be a new series of soc that won't overheat as this years release.
Its just the same as with the tegra 3. You could fry eggs on it. But HTC moved on and improved their devices. And I hope they will release another beast in the near future.
Huawei is enlarging their market on mobile devices but I think its to early to invest in one of those devices. I want there to be devs who makes roms so I don't have to rely only on the stock rom/firmware to work when something goes wrong. If that ever happens...who knows.
Samsung is a no go. They don't exist in my world. Last and only device I owned was the SII Exynos 4210. They make good electronics elsewhere but not mobile devices.
LG is also a no go. Only nexus. To much plastic, big LG logo and weird cheap looking software interface on stock rom. Reminds me of MIUI and Huawei.
SONY is moving from europe home to japan. Okay...weird. So then I just won't buy your stuff then. Bye..I will never buy a sony mobile device again.
When "I" am buying a device. I am only buying the flagships. Because I am looking for an investment that will last for many years and won't seem slow even after four years compared to newer devices. And also the general lifetime of the device. I want there to be devs here on the forum that I can rely on after device has reached the end-of-lifetime.
The Z ultra is a bit special. It has the same hardware specs as its brother Z1....so for performance I would still call this a kind of side show flagship despite the low spec camera.
i'#d be ok with sony if they would release an ultra 2 but it's too late now.
samsung, i liked until the whole locking SIMs to europe only or whatever around the time of the note 3 i tink, maybe 4.
moto x is brand new but there's some people on the board already. once it shows as rooted i'll jump on there. it's cheap as well actually. well cheaper than the ultra was when i bought it

I don't have any experience of motorola exept for the old classic pagers and radios. I've never seen a moto x in real life so I don't really have any opinion. Its offered at a good price yes! but yeah I really dunno. The only con I can see is the tiny battery at 2300mAh.
From what I can see its almost like some mix to a budget nexus device..almost stock rom and no bloat apps. :good:
Me myself is waiting to see what google has to offer. There is already a bunch of pics of the new nexus devices but I'm curiously waiting for the release event
