USA Bands For T-Mobile & Warranty Question - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I saw a z5 compact listing on ebay with these specs:
4G FDD-LTE B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(1700/2100), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B17(700), B20(800), B28(700), B38(2600), B40(2300)
3G W-CDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz
2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
The phone is a pre order from Japan. My question is will this work here in the US with T-mobile 4g lte? Or should we wait for the US release?
Also, if we order this (from USA) will Sony give us warranty given it was ordered from Ebay and from Japan?
Thanks!

It should support every T-Mobile LTE band in the US, with the only question on that front being if the Z5 series has VoLTE support for where T-Mo has Band 12-only coverage.
You'll also note that this phone also dropped 3G/HSPA+ support on 1700MHz, but I'm not too concerned actually since T-Mo has been refarming all their AWS/1700 band spectrum over to LTE anyway. Where I'm at in Chicago they've already converted AWS HSPA to LTE and there's only HSPA+ service on 1900 band. What part of the US are you in?

I just received my Xperia Z5 Compact E5823 (Customized Taiwan Firmware Model) and set it up on T-Mobile USA (Los Angeles Area). The 4G LTE works as well as previous Xperia Zs (I've had Z3c and Z1c) but the only thing I noticed is that it doesn't explicitly show the LTE symbol (it will say 4G instead). However, I'm hitting nearly 60Mbps download and 15Mbps upload.
Regarding Band 12 (700Mhz), I have actually seen the phone drop into that mode when I'm in known dead zones, elevators or underground parking garages. In the couple of cases when I knew I was in Band 12, I was able to send receive SMS messages. I don't think I was able to receive data though so I'm not sure if there's full support for this phone yet on Band 12. At least we know they haven't disabled it completely.
I'll do more tests this week and see if I can get more data on this.
Here's the APN settings I was using. I setup these 3 APNs based on what I saw when I plugged my SIM into my wife's Nexus 5X. Anything not listed means just use their defaults:
T-Mobile US 260
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
APN type: default,supl
APN Protocol: IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4
T-Mobile US 260 IMS
APN: ims
APN type: ims
APN Protocol: IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv6
T-Mobile MMS
APN: TMUS
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN type: mms
APN Protocol: IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4

the 4G indication is the same as LTE here in the states and other European countries. If you flash the new 32.0.A.5.32 Customized CE1 firmware you will see that the indicator now shows LTE when connected with LTE service.

Not the OP, and I'm certain its someplace on this forum, but being new to Android and whatnot, how do you go about flashing, and where do you find the customized firmware? What's the difference between flashing and rooting, and is it dangerous to flash (will I break anything), or is it pretty straightforward?
Thanks!

I'm not an expert, and this is my first Xperia device. But, it seems that the xperia series, and sony, is very inviting to having users/developers flash their own firmwares. From what I hear, it would be very difficult to brick your device. If you are just looking to flash stock firmwares that sony releases then you don't have to root your device. You will only have to root your device if you want to start flashing custom firmware. You should visit here to read more about how to flash stock firmware: http://www.flashtool.net/

Ok, thank you very much. So if, like the OP, I wanted to see LTE instead of 4G on my phone, I would have to probably root the phone first then apply a customized firmware (32.0.A.5.32 Customized CE1), correct?

no, you don't have to root your phone at all... you don't even have to reset it, you just have to apply that version of the firmware using the flashtool app. This is a sony firmware, not a custom firmware.

Oh, I see. Thank you!

I'm using a Z5 which has the same bands as the compact. I use it in New York. It does connect to band 12 LTE and does show the LTE logo when connected. However, when a call comes in, it goes back down to another band as soon as the call is about to come in. There is an VoLTE on/off option in the settings but this doesn't seem to do anything to the operability on T-Mobile US.

Sorry, this is a little confusing. Are you guys using LTE discovery to confirm band 12? Also are you saying volte doesn't work at all?

Yes, I was using LTE discovery to confirm band 12 connection. It definitely works well for data but VoLTE doesn't work since the phone hasn't been verified by T-Mobile USA yet. As of now, there are now Z5 plans for the US so it's hard to say if they'll ever do it...or if T-Mobile will relax their requirements.

Hmmm. I thought the certification was for band 12, not volte??? I.e, the Nexus phones currently have volte but do NOT have band 12 yet. If you look at extended range LTE on T-Mobile site, this also kind of confirms that meaning they talk about certifying for band 12. Moreover there is not really anything T-Mobile can do to change what the phone can do in either regard. It is up to the OS to control those.

I can 100% confirm there is no HD Voice or VoLTE and I'm on 32.0.A.6.200. Pretty big bummer if you ask me. Not sure on Band 12 yet as it is not where I am now but highly doubt it works.

I can also confirm Band 12 working.

Experience (not so good) with foreign SIM card

Vodafone requires that a new Access Point Name (APN) be set up for the SIM. The problem is that the Photon won't let me me create and save a new APN. What I've discovered is that, if I set the MCC and MNC in the APN to Sprint's values (310 and 120), then I can save the newly created APN, but the data connection won't work. If I set them to the appropriate values for Vodafone (505 and 03) then press save, the newly created APN disappears.
I spoke with Sprint today, and after 40 minutes of getting bounced around, finally got to someone who told me that this was by design. So if true, it appears that the SIM is unlocked for voice but locked for data (at least, if the carrier requires specific APN settings, as Vodafone does).
I also tried using APN Manager from the Android app store to create and select a different APN - no dice there, either.
Any suggestions, or am I out of luck?
The good news is that I brought my trusty old Touch Pro2 with me, just in case, and it is working fine ... but going back to the TP2 after a blissful week of using the Photon is really, really hard.
Doesn't make sense to me that it would only be unlocked for voice and not data. Did you try contacting Motorola directly? I'll rather hear it from the horse's mouth.
It's hard to tell who's really the horse in these situations ... nonetheless that is a great suggestion, and I've just submitted the question to Motorola's support site.
Im sorry...im very confused by this. Ill be traveling to lebanon tomorrow and specifically got this phone to be able to pop a sim in and use data and voice....your saying i wont be able to uze data?

I am saying that I can't use data ... your experience may be different. I suspect that this may work for some carriers but not for others, depending on what settings they require for data. If they require you to create a new Access Point Name profile, then it most likely won't work, given my experience.
I'm able to use data on a foreign sim. I was able to save the apn also. This is with Telcel and Movistar in Mexico. Setup the same as my Samsung Captivate.
So is there any possibility that this thing would ever be unlocked for US gsm networks like the Touch Pro 2 was? That would make this unit epic....

Which carrier did you purchase the phone from - was it Sprint?
So here is the latest, for anyone who's interested.
I emailed Motorola asking about why I couldn't save the APN, and was told
Motorola does not have any access to the Access Point Name (APN).The APN can only be access or generated from the service provider.
I then contacted Sprint again, and got a hold of someone who took my request more seriously then the previous Sprint people. After several days, however, this person came back with
I contacted Motorola and was told that the data will not work with the Motorola photon gprs data
I have no idea what the truth really is, but the bottom line is that I could not get the phone to work with data using a Vodafone Australia SIM. I even had Vodafone replace the SIM with their most current SIM - didn't help.
My Touch Pro2, on the other hand, had no problem getting the SIM to work for both data and voice, and I ended up turning my TP2 into a wireless router so I could indirectly use my Photon while out and about.

It's been a while since I was in Australia, but if I'm not mistaken, Vodaphone operates data on UMTS 2100 down under. The photon is tri-band, not quad-band, so you're not going to get data with a Vodaphone AUS sim. Virgin Mobile in AUS operates their 3G network on 2100 AND 900 MHz, so that would be an option. Another one would be Telstra. A SIM from either of those providers should work, giving you access to the APN settings. They remain grayed out until the SIM can register with a UMTS data circuit on the required radio band.

It depends on where he is in Australia. In most areas Vodaphone's network operates on UMTS2100 which the Photon does support. In some smaller areas it's UMTS900 which the Photon doesn't support.
Is it possible that the SIM card is supposed to "provision" your data similar to when you activate the phone on the Sprint network initially?
Or is the creating of an APN always a manual program effort by the user?

It sounds like the guy is having APN issues, not reception issues. Otherwise he would have at least been able to get EDGE/GPRS connections - but those too require the APN.
FYI, I was in Sydney for most of the trip, with a few days in Canberra.

I started two threads on the official Sprint Support forums. One in the normal Moto Photon, and one in the Premier area. Wonder if Sprint will respond.

Yes, it's ridiculous that Data and voice are so segmented, but these are smartphones! Gone are the days that you just had to worry about the GSM voice frequency. Now you have to make sure the data frequency and radio band are supported by your phone.
For what it's worth, I've had little luck with Vodaphone sim cards overseas. I typically use Tmobile or Orange sim cards in the UK, and TIM or Wind in Italy. For points in between, I just roam on the UK Tmobile sim. Next trip won't be for a bit, so I'm eager to see what the photon is like...
did you try rooting and manually editing the apn database with SQLite?
This was taken from the atrix APN editing thread:
Code:
2) Enable Airplane Mode
(hold power button for three seconds, select Airplane Mode)
3) Open Root Explorer
4) Navigate to: /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
5) Click on "telephony.db"** (this should open the db using SQLite Editor)
6) Select "carriers"
7) You should see a long list of APN settings for various carriers. Edit/add what you want
8) Press back twice to close the SQLite editor and you should be back in Root Explorer. Close Root Explorer.
9) Disable Airplane Mode
So Just add the APN with the sprint MCC and MNC, then manually edit the APN's MCC and MNC and see if that works

UK phone in US - 3G does not work.

I just purchased a SG SII here in the US and later found out it is a UK phone (the sales rep said it was a US model)
anyway, the phone works great EXCEPT it will not log onto T-Mobiles 3G network. All I get is EDGE which is terrible.
How can I get it to go to 3G?
Spoke with T-Mobile, even got a new sim card. No help
Spoke wth Samsung US - they tried, could not help and then said to contact the UK.
Called Samsung UK and they said it should work, if not, bring it back as it is broken!
anyway, is there some sort of settings that I can change to make it work in the US.
I also need it to work in Brazil as I will be going there and will be using the Brazilian Tim network and installing their sim card.
thank you for your assistance in advance.
The phone is suppose to be:
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Did you limit the phone to only work with 2G in the settings?
Check Wireless Network settings.
Much more better would be goto Settings->About phone, tell us what Baseband, and Kernel, and ROM version you are using.
Reboot phone.

Exactly, that phone will never work on T-Mobile USA 3G network, refund it or switch to AT&T. Makes you wish someone would regulate mobile networks here.
Edit: SGS2 should work fine on TIM Brazil.
you guys are absolutely certain that this phone will not work on T-Mobile?
what about certainty that it will work on Tim? I live in Brazil and defintely need it to work there.
Here, in the US, when I return next year, I can alway switch over to AT+T.
I need to be certain because if I get to brazil and it does not work, I am screwed because then it is almost impossible to get anything done to it.
BTW- they have been saying that t-mobile will have this same phone in a few months. How will that one be able to work? will it be possible to flash that info to this phone when it comes out?
thanks

The US T-mobile Variant is completely different from the UK model, won't be the same. Also it's true you can never get 3G with T-Mobile, don't know anything about TIM though.
T-Mobile uses the 1700 AWS band which this phone does not use so yes... You will NEVER get 3g or HSPA+ with T-Mobile U.S.

so when you say fine, the phone, 3g to get to the internet, etc etc will all work?
as it is here, the phone works great and when with wi-fi, the internet is great but EDGE sucks ass.
So, as I already know that I am beating the dead horse. 3G here with T-Mobile is never going to happen but it will work with AT+T, in Brazil, the phone for calls will work fine, 3G will also work fine too.
does anyone know about claro, vivo or oi in brazil? just wondering....
and what about other carriers in the US, will it work with anyone beside AT+T?
thanks again. this has been very useful!
EDGE runs on GPRS. Your phone matches TIM's UMTS frequencies so it will have 3G data on that network.

Galaxy S2 HD LTE (SHV-e120s)

Hi guys
I recently got one of these shipped over to Australia. Now I've encountered a few network issues I'd like help to resolve.
1. I think the only HSDPA/UMTS bands available are only 900/2100MHz. That means I can't get access to Telstra's Next G Network as it runs on 850MHz. Unfortunately I can't get access to the service mode at all and I've also downloaded the network app from the android market to see if I can change the band that way, but that doesn't help either - the app just crashes. I guess there's not much I can do there.
2. According to all the sites I've seen about the specs for the phone - LTE bands supported are 800/1800/2600MHz. But I can't seem to get on Telstra's LTE in sydney. The phone assumes that even with a Telstra sim, I'm on roaming with SK Telecom and it states that 4G roaming is now available. The aforementioned network app is set to "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" - yet no LTE!
Perhaps I could flash to another ROM? but I'm not sure which would be applicable? The LG Nitro HD has the closest specs in my opinion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. usually, bands are hardware limited. Meaning if you don't receive a particular band, you probably won't ever be able to.
2. what bands does Telstra's LTE operate on? #1 applies here too. If the LTE antenna in the phone doesn't receive the frequency your operator is transmitting on, there's not much you can do.
And in your "Perhaps", why would you even consider flashing a ROM for a completely different phone to yours???? (unless you WANTED to end up with a paperweight)
EDIT: Look at this thread. Specifically what's in post 2, which reads "So it doesn't matter where you buy the phone from, it will work on Telstra unless you go buy the korean version or something." Just googling your model number (SHV-E120S), it looks like that IS a Korean version of the phone. The fact that you say it says something about roaming for SK Telecom (a South Korean carrier) seems to support that.
EDIT 2: a quick google for the SHV-E120S turns up this page, which says the phone is for networks voice GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, data (HSPA+) UMTS900, UMTS2100, and LTE frequencies LTE 800, LTE 1800, LTE 2600.
According to Telstra's wikipedia page, HSPA on Telstra is UMTS850 and UMTS2100, and LTE is LTE1800. So you won't get full support on all of Telstra's bands with that model of phone.
It looks like you'll prob be stuck with 3G nextwork if you use this phone in AUS.
Remember: DO NOT try to flash ROMs that is not for your phone. I've tried this one time and ended up hard-bricking my phone. NEVER DO THIS!

According to Telstra's wikipedia page, HSPA on Telstra is UMTS850 and UMTS2100, and LTE is LTE1800. So you won't get full support on all of Telstra's bands with that model of phone.

Ive read a number of XDA sites where people flash and install new modems with different bands. Woudl it be possible to install a 850MHz modem into the above phone?

Um, no. No flash will ever address a hardware limitation.
SHV-E120S Network problem...

2. what bands does Telstra's LTE operate on?

Verizon on S4 not getting data or texts through T-Mobile

I have the VZW S4 variant on OF1. I rooted and at first, had access to the Signal app, but now, however, I do not. Even with that app, changing it to GSM only gave me 3g but with NO DATA. So, calls and texts worked, but I got NO DATA.
My problem now is trying to figure out how to get data working under GSM.. and how to make the signal app work again. Like I said though; even when I used that app -- no data.
Help please.
The thread below may help. Can you provide a little detail on your steps to root, ROM, and data info i.e. APN, network settings, Signal App Status info, etc.
Here you go:
forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/help/galaxy-s4-i545-verizon-outbound-text-t3186668
Rooted with Mobile Gogo. ROM is stock. APN network settings are T-Mobile's. Signal App won't let me do anything, as I've said. It's locked.
Also ---
When I /COULD/ use the Signal app, and change it, on 3g and HSPA+ I got TEXT but NO DATA.
This is my problem./
@DMiller92 your problem is super simple. T-mobile is gsm, it uses a different kind of technology than verizon which is a cdma network. I've never heard of a verizon branded phone being able to switch to a gsm network. If it's not impossible its at the very least much harder than you realize. Phones do exist that are built specifically to be able to use either network, but a verizon branded device will never be one. Your limited to switching to other cdma networks eg sprint

There are tons of threads in which people have success with this. I've got everything working, sort of...
But now WiFi won't work. At all. Can't even toggle it.

Not exactly. There are lots of people that got it "sort of working" verizon i545 is a "global phone" in the sense that in countries outside of the US it is made to connect to 4g gsm lte networks as cdma is being depreciated in countries like mexico and canada. Meaning you need to use the 4g apns if the service is available in your area. Non 4g vzw devices dont work in many parts of mexico and canada, or do not work well anymore for this reason. It does not have hardware meant to pick up standard gsm 3g networks.
Tl;dr use 4g apn settings.
Try this: Name : T-Mobile LTE
APN: fast.tmobile.com
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: default,supl,admin,dun,mms

Everything works as it should.. the data just drops.
My problem now:
I can't toggle WiFi. I can't use it. I can't turn it on.
That sounds like a rom issue. If you're lucky enough to have an unlocked bootloader your best bet would be to just flash a tmobile rom btdubs. Try heading to stang5litres rom and flashing the vzwwififix.zip. make sure to wipe dalvik and cache

You will also need to change the smsc number to +12063130004 and change network mode to gsm(auto).
I did this with an app called advance signal status, you will need your su binary at 2.49 or higher. I'm now fully functional on tmobile. The files needed are inlink below

You are totally wrong. The i545, in addition to LTE Band 4 (T-Mo's primary one), has WCDMA/HSPA radio capability on PCS (1900mhz), which is now T-Mo's primary 3G band, as well as 850mhz (AT&T), 900mhz (other countries), and 2100mhz (other countries).
@tengtengvn thanks for reiterating that. I was going off the outlines listed on Verizon's CDMA retirment FAQ page which lines up with what I said outside of device specifics.

LG V60 unlocked Lmv600am - works in UK?

Evening all,
Just a bit of advice, I'm looking to upgrade from my g8x to the v60. As the european/international version is virtually impossible to find, I'm looking at the unlocked USA variants of this phone. Does anyone have this model in the UK and can confirm that it works on 3g/4g OK? I've found different sources stating that some of the bands aren't present in the USA variants - not bothered about 5g, just as long as I can get 3 and 4g on o2 it's fine. Also tried frequency checker but it doesn't seem to list the v60 on there for some reason...
OK so I've just come across the website Kimovil, this seems to be more helpful - looks like the only one that is going to be any use is the Canadian variant of the phone, the USA versions from t mobile/at+t have most of the bands missing for use in the UK. Explains why they go for far less online!
Interesting have you got a link to that site or have a link of where to buy one that will be good for UK
Also looking to buy a v60 to use on the UK
Kimovil.com
Not really found anything other than links for the USA versions of the phone, they don't seem to have the correct bands for most of the UK networks. I'm just watching eBay and seeing what comes up...
I bought an ATT model, unlocked from Ebay. I live in The Netherlands and my provider, Simyo, uses the KPN network with 800mhz (band 20) and 1800mhz (band 3) for 4G/LTE. After inserting my sim everything worked right away. Calls, data, no problems at all. My provider does not support 5G yet
Edit: be aware that you will not receive updates like android 11 (if on 10) or security updates on the V600AM.
I bought the V600AM, I'm in the UK and I can confirm that it works with O2. The only issue is that phone will switch to 2G when making voice calls, soon after hang up it will switch back to 4G LTE.

OK that's useful to know, I'm still not sure about 3g support as where I live in the depths of rural Cornwall we seem to struggle a bit with 4g - it's OK when I'm outside but indoors tends to drop back to 3g, I can use wifi at least. Thanks for the info though

Yeah, the 3g coverage is a thing for me as I tend to only get 4g when outside, it reverts to 3g indoors and I think that may be an issue for me with this phone as it needs to be a daily driver - as far as I can see the USA variants don't support the right bands for UK use....

You could force the phone to be on "LTE Only" with an app from Gstore, but then you won't be able to receive and make voice calls. Not ideal, but considering this phone is from a US network,it will never be 100% compatible with UK Networks. If only someone would find a solution to root it!!!
Which bands use for UK?
Calls will be via 3g if your region coverage that bands.
