Safe to upgrade from 4.4.4 to 5.1 by flashing AOSP 5.1 - Moto E Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a moto e xt1021 (single sim) on kitkat 4.4.4 and I want to upgrade it to Lollipop AOSP 5.1.
So far, there have been no OTA updates to lollipop.
I've heard that lollipop has a different bootloader to kitkat, so i'm unsure if i can simply flash a lollipop rom.
Is there any way I can get lollipop on my phone?
If not, i'll just have to wait for the OTA update (if it ever happens).
Also, do rooted phones still get updates? Mine is rooted, but it's on stock rom with xposed framework.
Thanks.

If you think you are quite comfortable with the fact that you are responsible for anything that happens to your phone, then I would suggest you to do the following things :
1) First of all unlock the bootloader (You'll find how-to's HERE)
2) Now install a custom recovery (TWRP 2.8.7 is preferred, Google it)
3) Make a full backup (System, Data, Cache, Boot) of your phone
4) Wipe everything (EXCLUDING YOUR SD CARD)
5) Go to the AOSP 5.1.1 thread, download the ROM
6) Download the GAPPS from HERE
7) Put these into the SD Card and boot your phone to TWRP
8) Install the ROM and GAPPS
OPTIONAL : You may want to install Super SU to have root access.
The first boot of the ROM takes a good 10 mins, so be patient.
Hope these hep u out... Cheers

Does lollipop use up a lot of the moto e's internal storage?
Also, how is battery life and performance?

looking for a Root

okay, i have a Stock S5 with the FOJ4 firmware on it, i want to root it and place a custom rom on it(ViSiON-X US TMO or Maverick 5.1.1 V9.7)
i have tried to root the phone already but it does not stay rooted, root checker also comes back as not rooted
also every time i root and install SuperSU i get stuck in a never-ending boot-loop.... and before you tell me it takes time... i sat for 1 hour & 30mins. before giving up and going back to full stock
i used....
Odin3 v3.10.7

and http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/development/root-kernel-root-method-foj4-t3252830
is there a way to root & keep it or do i need to downgrade?
Did you enable bootloader unlocking under settings?

Also, if the kernel installs then try installing the recovery and see if you can flash su using the recovery.
@ AACThaKid, Hey there!
After reading countless threads regarding the "unrootable" 5.1.1, I "cheated" a little and did this:
NOTE: I stayed on kitkat 4.4.2 for a while to wait until a solid custom rom release of 5.1.1 was made and released.
1. Root your stock 4.4.2 and apply twrp 2.8.7.0 and install supersu. I used towelroot to root 4.4.2. I entered the "download mode" to apply twrp for custom recovery.
2. after your root and custom recovery have been applied, create a nandroid backup of your stock rom. I use my microsd card for this for portability reasons.
3. provided you have downloaded vision or maverick already (I'm using maverick right now and it's smooth) place a copy of chosen rom in your micro sd card.
4. wipe your phone (dalvik, data, cache and factory reset) -- I wipe twice because I'm picky. =)
5. install your rom and reboot. PROFIT!

@TheArtiszan i did not enable bootloader unlocking under settings, i did not know of such a thing lol, also have tried flashing a beta and a non-beta version of SU in recovery and both made it not load
@ AACthakid: yes, downgrade to 4.4.2 using odin. =)

SGS3 I9300: Root and Custom Recovery lost after CM13 (Root enabled in dev opts)

Dear All,
Sorry if am re-posting the same, and as am new here and need an urgent help, started this thread.
1. My Samsung Galaxy SIII International (I9300) was rooted and I had CM11 stable/snapshot version there since last 2-3 weeks.
2. Yesterday, I tried upgrading the latest CM13 nightly for my device.
3. While doing so, and rebooting, it asked me the normal message "root possibly lost, fix, yes or no". I accidentally pressed no.
4. Then I noticed after CM13 was flashed, that I do not have root access anymore. Please note that at this point in time, I was not aware that it has to be explicitly enabled in developer options.
5. I came to know that I lost root when I tried to boot in to recovery (CWM) to install gapps.
6. Now, under the impression that I do not have root anymore, I tried to root again with Odin as I had been doing all these days.
- By doing that, ODIN removed my custom recovery (CWM) and flashed it with stock recovery.
- Though ODIN said PASS after reboot, I still do not have root access.
7. Removed cache, wipe data, and factory reset, multiple times but no help.
8. Enabled root for both apps and adb in Developer options, but no use.
9. I also tried KINGO root ( a very popular tool for SGS3 these days) but in vain.
10. Now, am stuck with CM13 and stock recovery and unable to do anything with ROM manager or anything else as I do not have root anymore.
11. Am able to install few apks for whatsapp and facebook for now and living with it, but it wouldn't let me install playstore apk too anymore.
Highly appreciate any quick feedback.
Many Thanks,
BR,
Shiva
I belive you need to flash the stock 4.3 jellybean rom with odin, and root it afterwards.

TWRP 3.0.0..???????????
First of all.. Update TWRP to 3.0.2, you are NOT supposed to see the message that tells you that root is gone, as (official) CM13 includes root from now on.
For root, inside Android go to Settings > Developer Options > Root > Only apps.
Do it via Odin as only 3.0.2 is available in a .tar file (latest version), should not be hard.
Not only that, but upgrading from CM11 to CM13 is not recommended, as it causes multiple compatibility issues with installed apps (afaik).
You are better off with wiping it all and install CM13 Clean, and if you decide to; you must also flash Gapps (optional) directly after CM13 (no reboot).

SGS3 I9300: Root and Custom Recovery lost after CM13 - SOLVED
Dear All,
Thank you for your valuable advice and suggestions. I used ODIN to flash back to stock ROM and now everything works as it is like out of the box. I will root again perhaps in a few days and the flash the stable release of CyanogenMod. Will keep you posted. I wish the Android M snapshot is released by then.
Thanks again,

I'm on Android 4.1.2 rooted and with Philz CWM Touch recovery.. Now?

Hello everybody, as the title says, I currently have this configuration. My father's phone always reports memory is full and I decided to upgrade the phone to a different ROM, possibly one which is light. Anyway I found different threads about IsoRec recovery but I didn't understood what are we talking about. Also, I was not able to understand what to do and which files to flash, even if, just for an example, I wish to flash latest CM13. I think that an old recovery which supports Android 4.1.2 doesn't support Android 6.0 to be flashed via zip, so I would probably mess up something. So, what should I do? Flash something with ODIN via PC? Or there's something I can do directly from the phone to update recovery and then flash the ROM's zip? Thank you!
Hi,
You can follow the instructions here to install CM12.1 first:
Download cm-12.1-XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip to your sdcard
Make sure you're using a Kitkat Compatible Recovery
Boot into Recovery
Wipe all your data
Flash cm-12-.1XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-i9100.zip from sdcard
(Optional)Flash Google Apps.zip from sdcard
Reboot

how to update unlocked MT2-L03 to latest lollipop B322

my mate 2 is still in the original Android version 4.3. I never updated it. Now I am thinking to update the phone to latest Lollipop B322, May I know how I can do it? Will this update reset my phone to the factory mode? How can I still recover my phone to the current state after updated to new Lollipop? Sorry for my naive questions. Thanks in advance for your help!
If your on 148, I think you need to hit an intermediate update first. It will reset your phone to stock, but you can install TWRP backups. Not sure if you can restore old system images. I know the partition sizes get larger on android 5 builds
Sent from my Ascend Mate 2 using Tapatalk
Do clean installs only. So backup everything first. A backup of all apps can be useful as it was for me but some apps from jelly bean didn't work on lollipop and I had to find and alternative. Some apps just had errors and I just had to re downoad them from the play store. So backup first. Also the custom recovery you have on 4.3 will need to be updated for newer ROM on this phone. Use your old twrp first to back up your stock 4.3 first.
Then go like this:
Build 148 ->
Build 309 (lollipop)
Factory reset (repartitions internal storage) ->
Build 322 (gives you new bootloader) ->
Factory reset (so all is ready) ->
All set to install custom ROM. Update your custom recovery to the one the ROM you want requires.
Remember to do clean installs and wipe cache and davlik. If you use xposed flash the ROM, Gapps and xposed then so you don't have to wait on Android to rebuild the davlik cache later when you've restored your 100+ apps (takes a while).

If I remember right you can install a custom recovery TWRP and then boot into TWRP and it will ask if you want to root. There are other options to root the phone as well. I just flashed from B322 -> custom rom which was already rooted. If you're staying on stock b322 though I think TWRP will do it for you.

If TWRP root didn't work you can flash SuperSU.zip file using TWRP.

A limitation of B322 over a custom rom like CM is that Xposed doesn't work on B322. So if you want lots of features and customization go with a custom rom like CM13 (which I will eventually be upgrading to it is just a lot of work to migrate 200+ apps & settings lol). A positive of B322 is EMUI (Huawei's stock rom aka B322) is extra battery life. I hear that CM13 is just as good in that regard but I haven't tried it yet. So I'd say a custom rom would be better than stock B322 (even if it is rooted) just because of the ability to use Xposed.
Thank you so much for your reply! I am still having two questions:
1. Before upgrade, i should backup data. Can I just use the backup function in handset which i found from Settings/About phone/System Update/Local Update/? I don't know about TWRP.
2. to upgrade from B148 to B322, can I just follow this instruction: http://consumer.huawei.com/us/support/manuals/detail/index.htm?id=52025&key4=mate 2
4.1 Force upgrade
---Step 1. A MICRO SD card of 4G or more should be available. The MICRO SD card
made by Sandisk, Kingstone, or Kingmax is recommended.
---Step 2. Format the MICRO SD card (This operation is optional).
If your phone’s system is B3XX, you should skip Step 3 and Step 4.
---Step 3. Copy the Software: recovery package file UPDATE.APP and main package file

---Step 4. Copy the entire dload folder (with UPDATE.APP and
UPDATE_VENDOR.APP in it) to the root directory of the MICRO SD card.
If your phone’s system is B126 or B148, you should skip Step 5.
---Step 5. Copy the upgrade package UPDATE_VENDOR.APP to a directory named
dload and copy the dload folder to the root directory of the MICRO SD card.
---Step 6. Make sure your handset is power off. Insert the MICRO SD card into the
handset. Press the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN keys and POWER key to

Best to have a full system backup using TWRP. Also having a full backup from Titanium Backup will allow you to restore apps which can be faster than installing them over. If you don't have too many apps it isn't a big deal. It does let you save app settings.
Also use an app to back up phone log and sms if you want that history.
I don't know about the built in backup. Haven't used it.

You can do that. I think that will work. You might have to flash it twice if there are issues after the first time. Then once it is B322 do a factory reset/restore just in case as well. All data is lost in the process of upgrading.

Thanks for those important pointers and the OP for this topic.
I also like my 2 year old HAM2 so much i just picked up another one as a fallback device perhaps if not daily handset.
I will leave that one JellyBean but i do plan to upgrade the next one to Lollipop 322 i hope.
On the old Mate 2 i flashed through TWRP the very latest SuperSU zip 2.76 i think.
I assume it's best to always use the latest version of it? Is that ok?

I also have a backup HAM2...very useful phone and must props to the devs for working on all the custom recoveries, roms and apps which help make our phones really customizable and usable.
Yes. Update SuperSU using the zip in TWRP 'install.' I just upgraded my own phone to CM13.0 (snapshot) and it fixed some issues (with other issues remaining...always a tradeoff lol!). SuperSu latest version works great! It's a good idea to use the newest version but remember if it isn't broke why take the chance to upgrade it and make it broken?

It's been a long time since I bothered with ROM's, rooting etc. but another MT2-L03 in the stable demanded to get those hands dirty again.
As usual I errored some things a little, lost root, and even managed to muff TWRP backups with Error 255 or whatever. But Mate 2 is ever so forgiving. It was just a matter of reflashing the Stock Recovery and then firmware, Factory Reset, and install anew the UPDATE.APP+VENDOR (aka:Lollipop!) redo which cleaned everything out so that TWRP 3.02 installed and backed up as expected as well as ROOTED!! :good:
It took getting onboard the L24-LIW Honor 5X to make me appreciate the Mate 2 even more.

S. O. S Accidently deleted OS, no backup available

Hello guys, I know It may sound funny but I was tweaking around the TWRP 3.1.1-0 and when I tried to reboot it said: no os installed are you sure you wish to reboot?
Ive made no backups and i know nothing about flashing, roms, installing android and all those stuff I've seen when I Googled it. Can anyone give me some light? Step by step kinda thing?
Ps: I have not rebooted or whatsoever the phone so far after deleting this stuff XD idk if that would help
Just flash any custom rom and gapps using twrp...and the phone will boot..

At this point you have to install a rom. You can choose to revert back to miui or install any nougat based from. If you want to install miui head over to en.miui.com and under device find "Redmi Note 4x", there would be global and developer builds available, download the build pertaining to Redmi Note 4x International version.
But if you want any custom ROM then download any ROM from the forums, but make sure it is ONLY nougat (7.1.2) version, because twrp 3.1 .1 doesn't support Oreo Roms.
If you choose to install miui make sure you have the lazy flasher zip with you. Now carefully follow the steps-
1. Copy the files to your pc or to an SD card .
2. From twrp - format data
3. Wipe - system, data, cache, dalvik
4. Copy the files to internal storage of device using a USB cable if the files are on pc. (ROM file , and lazy flasher if rom is miui)
5. Now install the ROM zip .
6. Flash lazy flasher if the ROM you installed was miui.
7. Now reboot (if you installed miui it will say no os installed, but just reboot)
