In other words, they can refuse warranty if you unlock the bootloader because of the furse being blown after bootloader unlock. Since its a hardware change, its irreversible. For more information, check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28464645
http://blog.azimuthsecurity.com/2013/04/unlocking-motorola-bootloader.html
What does that mean for the average consumer? Unlocking bootloader is a costlier matter now, at least for a nexus device.. Warranty is a service provided by OEMs. They can outright refuse warranty if they have a reason to and in some cases for no reason. Its a grey area.
IMHO, if you are willing to buy a nexus device and dont want to test out custom roms and rooting the device, you are not using a nexus correctly. Unfortunately, it seems even a nexus is becoming an average users go-go phone, instead of it being more developer friendly.

So you started a thread to point to other XDA threads? Prepare for the thread locker.

Sorry, you are WRONG. Thread should be closed. Don't assume to tell people how they should use the phone they want to buy.

...because making threads about reviews is somehow different.

You'll notice that many of them were closed with a pointer to the reviews thread...

Stop crying over evo 3d being locked.

Crying over a phone that has not been released cause it is locked is completely stupid. Whether it is locked and encrypted or has an instaroot button it will be hacked at some point. The only thing that changes is the method on doing so. If you have already made ur decision to not get this phone due to it being locked and encrypted then please navigate away from this section of the forum and please by all means please stop crying over this topic. The evo 3d is not unhackable it will be done its just a matter of time. If u make the decision not to get this phone at last use a better excuse. You nor.I know the ability of the devs so until they come out and say its impossible drop it and wipe ur tears.

Why don't you go ask the guys over in the droid x section about encrypted bootloaders.
Says the guy that joined 2 months ago. GTFO.
You saying that its only a matter of time isn't helping either. In fact, its misleading considering that many phones in this position, notably the Droids, have yet to be cracked a year later. Besides, this is a EVO 3D topic on a home brew development site. It being incredibly limited to the purpose of this entire site is essential discussion.

Try saying this to the many of users out there still locked down thinking their phones would eventually be cracked. Ya they're still waiting...
I'm not going to waste my time on "it might be done eventually" If and when it does get cracked the next big thing will probably be coming out. Patience is a virtue for suckers.

100% agree. I was debating myself between the 3D and the SGS2 so that I can have a beast of a phone and continue with MIUI, but now that choice I guess got easier.
Maybe my post was a bit rude I apologize for that. Its not that I think we should not discuss this. I just don't think we need 10 separate topics a day doing so. I also feel this being the sole reason some people are protesting getting this phone is a bit stupid when u balance the pros and cons of this phone. I have also read that there is someone attempting to develop a way to unlock locked phones using a similar method to jailbreaking iphone. I dont remember where on google I read that. I'm not telling u that to start rumors just trying to show u it is being worked on it is not going unnoticed by the devs.

The problem with motorola phones isn't the encryption. its the fact that it re-locks once un-encrypted. they've gotten to the point of un-encrypting it, just the re-locking problem is the issue.

Doesn't change the fact that it's been well over a year and the problem still exists. The point is, yes it's POSSIBLE that this will be rootable at some point, but it's more likely that by that time there will be much better, easily rootable tech (i.e. Nexus 3) on the market.
It's not bad to have hope for a bootloader solution.
A bootloader unlock may never happen, though. You can hope for a bootloader bypass though. Just look at the Atrix. We have a bypass ready, we just need a kernel

You need to stop putting so much faith into the devs. We all love them to death but we just can't do everything. If it's anything like the way Motorola locked their devices down, the odds are against us. 256 bit encryption is crazy. LOL

[Q] Question on the state of G Note II Modding

Hey guys, I have had my VZW Note II for a few months now, and I tried to root/unlock it a few weeks back but ran into multiple issues that prevented me from completing the process (specifically the unlocking posed problems, no doubt because of my own mistakes).
My question is, what is the state of G Note II modding right now? I came from the GNex (rooted) and it had a very robust community, but it seems like the difficulty with unlocking this phone might lead to a less vibrant set of options for flashing. Is this phone getting a lot of dev attention or is it not worth the trouble to crack?
This is subjective, I know, but give me your opinions if you dont mind! Thanks in advance!
This isn't really a subjective question. There are two forums that could answer your question. Development and original development. Take a look and see what you think.
I will say if you compare anything to the options on a nexus device you'll be disappointed.

I have been shot down when I post questions in the dev threads, but do you think this is an acceptable post for them? I have no doubt that it will be less robust than Gnex, but I figured it might still be worth doing for cyan or AOKP or whatever. Anyways, thanks for the tip!

DO NOT POST YOUR QUESTION THERE! This is in the right place my point was go to them and look at the different ROMs. If it is good enough for you or the is a ROM you want to try then you answered your own question

There is no good answer to this. What is mainstream for one person is early-adopter for another. The right answer is to do some reading in the ROM/kernel threads and decide your own comfort level. That you asked this question makes me think you should wait. I would say that dev for this device is still gaining traction. It's only been out a couple of months.

There are half a dozen or so Touchwiz based ROMs and at least that many AOSP ROMs. Add in 4 or 5 kernels and considering the we only got the bootloader unlock about two months ago, I think development has been great. In all honestly, I am not sure how many more ways ROMs can be tweaked...there might be some diminishing utility after 10+ ROMs.
I got my phone about 10 days ago, and had it rooted/unlocked within a few hours. I didnt have any issues at all getting it there. I made sure not to accept the VZW OTA update, and when I saw it was going to force me to update within 5 days, that forced my hand to go ahead and root it.
I just used the following guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 to root it, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636 to unlock it.
If you have accepted the OTA update, your steps change, and you'll use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348 to unlock it instead.
I personally havent messed with AOSP roms. Coming from GNex that was all I ran, and I'm enjoying a slick TouchWiz setup right now. I remember on my Droid Charge, having NO desire to keep TW, but it's a lot better on this phone.
I am a Charge refugee as well...what a difference the Note 2 is. I've run CleanRom and three builds of Beans. Don't think I want to give up some the the Touchwiz features for AOSP...at least until key lime pie comes out.

Do you feel better after that childish tantrum of a response? You hate these questions, yet you didn't actually respond to what I asked.
I am not a dev, nor do I want to be. I asked not as someone looking for features that don't exist, but as a user who wants to know how the note II compares to the gnex in terms of xda support.
Either answer the question I asked, or keep your whining to yourself.

My attitude? You began your response by saying that you hate questions like mine, which is not the most civil of ways to speak to a stranger.
More importantly, you still missed my question. I asked if it was worth my time to unlock it, I did not complain about a lack of dev support. It was an honest question which you ignored and instead responded in a rude manner. Thanks for nothing, a second time.

I'm not sure what this guy did to launch you into that insanely now cliche rant. This is Q&A not a dev thread. The OP did not ask for an ETA or request a feature or compare one ROM to another, or ask a question that could have been answered with a search.
Many people admonished the OP, including me, but you are the only who felt the need to rip him a new one. You could have just linked him to the XDA rules instead of going off like you did If the OP needed a refresher.
Maybe Q&A is not the best sub-forum for you if you can't assume good intentions. You have your own threads that you can patrol for slights real and imagined.

Your question was not worded very well to say that since you wanted to compaire it to the gnex. A quick look in the development sections shows what is available. My previous points still stand. Always see these threads at least 2-3 times in the 6 months i own a phone that isnt a nexus.

Sorry I've been around long enough yo get frustrated by people on this site. I've also been saying the same things for months and linking to the XDA rules doesn't make people care, giving them harsh statements do.
If OP wanted his question answered he could have searched. Plenty of info is available.
My views have become, if you haven't searched and then are asking why or if you should do something, you shouldn't do it at all and shouldn't ask if you should.
Search first then ask questions.
If you want to compare the Gnex to the Note2 development, all you have to do is look in both forums and see how many ROM/athreads are in the dev sections. Weather you unlock or not has nothing to do with it. Do it or don't.
In answer to the original poster, yes it is worth unlocking.
The beans and cleanrom roms alone add enough polish to warrant it.
The ability to take a nandroid is worth it. Everyone backs up their computer..... so why not a tablet
There is a kernel or two? That work with stweaks for cpu/gpu power control. A forum member also put together some nice flash able profiles for it even. If you want to increase battery or performance it's possible.
Depending on where you are at, one of the two available basebands may work better for you. That can't be flashed without a recovery....
Because it came with a locked bootloader of the start, there seemed to be a delay with devs because they first had to figure out how to unlock it to begin development. Now that is unlocked the wheels seem to be moving pretty good.
On a side note, if I recall correctly there may be a way to run international roms on it. You would want to research, I haven't really looked into it. Could be wrong.

The original modem has faster 3g for me, but the new one has better connectivity and speed on 4g. I wish we had combined modems with ie. 3g from one modem and 4g from the other.

Any devs working with the HTC1 or S4?

I am due for an upgrade June 1st, and one of the biggest things I am looking at is the dev communities for each. I absolutely despise Touchwiz, which means, if I get the S4, I'm unlocking it literally the second it is in my hand, On the flipside, I would like to keep up with Android versions, so the 4.1.2 on the HTC One irks me a bit(so I'd unlock that as well). Anyway, I was wondering if any of the devs here are working on, or planning to get and work on, either of these devices. It would be kind of nice to keep the same ROMs across devices if possible. Thanks!

hey my upgrade is June 1st as well lol
i think im going to get the S4. looks like $149.99 for Sprint?
tried last week (about 15days til 1st) said i could get can early upgrade for $100. smh
today is about 9 days i guess, wonder if they will let me upgrade without that fee
As soon as there is an unlock for the ATT Galaxy S4 I bet Ktoonsez will start making kernels for that. he has a great kernel for the S3 and I know he owns an S4 now.

Yeah some people just want stock AT&T Sense. Anyways, I believe it's AT&T fault for not rolling out the update. HTC leaves it up to the carrier to when they want to release the update. I could be wrong because Tmo and Sprint hasn't released 4.2.2 either. I have a feeling that The Verizon HTC one will be released before we see an update.

Hahaha like it's all HTCs fault... International has it and there is basically no difference between international and AT&T software besides stupid bloat, so go complain to AT&T if you want. I'm sure they'll send the OTA to your phone right there on the spot.

yeah what's up with this? didn't XDA used to require like 50 posts before you could start a thread? this is why we have androidforums.com. regardless, HTC needs to spend more on marketing so that more people will buy their products and ATT will have to prioritize the updating. this delay is not on HTC...it's almost 100% on AT&T. ATT had the HOX JB update for like 3.5 months before they pushed it out to people, and their own customer service isn't even made privy to the status. this is what the purchase of subsidized phones and contracts gets us consumers. if it's REALLY a problem for you, then you're at XDA for the solution. this isn't a place to complain. if you want stock sense, that's fine, I can totally appreciate it, but you dont come to, and sign up for, a Dev website to ***** about the lack of a stock OTA from a carrier known to take (queue Sandlot) FOR-EV-ER to update it's phones.
Interesting. Thank you to everyone for your thoughtful comments. I have rooted a lot of phones and wanted to see why the update was not moving forward. The extra colorful comments are welcomed as well. The only issue with forums is I could be gaining advise from experts or middle school students.

I think the snide replies are rooted in the fact that the basic sentiment of your original post has been stated an overwhelming amount of times on this website, especially with regards to AT&T and HTC issuing an OTA for major - and even minor - software updates. Many folks get tired of coming to this site to read the same thing, hence the increased likelihood of getting a snide reply.
Truthfully, the update probably is moving forward, it's just that AT&T is about as transparent as the Bush administration so we never have any clue where things stand with regards to actual delivery of the updates. Yes, forums is probably going to be hit or miss with regards to quality of advice. But the way you're delivering your comment here makes you seem like you should be in forums, and is probably going to get you some colorful responses from non-middle schoolers.
If you've rooted as much as you claim, you probably know that we almost never know why carrier updates are not moving forward....or if they're moving forward at all. Many come here to find technical solutions and workarounds to that exact ongoing problem, and often get annoyed seeing the same thing posted again and again in each subforum. I think the general assumption here is that many of us are, in fact, frequently posting complaints/concerns/comments on carrier and manufacturer websites, social media pages, forums, etc. We're all on the same boat, or at least many of us.
We welcome rallying for a cause here, but it's possible there's a better way to go about starting a rally for this issue. In the past, folks have posted the actual interactions they've received from customer support reps and techs, feedback responses, etc, and discussions have ensued as to the best ways to get in touch with the companies involved with regards to really displaying the distaste of both the developer and general enthusiast consumer. The AT&T/Rogers/Telus HTC One X forums is a great case study, in particular, the rally around getting the original JB update RUU, source, etc.
I've had a few interactions with HTC and ATT with regards to future updates, but have gotten absolutely zero information from them. Sadly, they mask their lack of sharing as ignorance all too well. Even more sad is that CSRs and technicians are probably not really lying at all when they claim to know nothing about the updates. Again, we're hooked into contract, not to mention that the vast majority of their consumers don't realize the potential benefits of upgrades, and in many cases aren't even aware of their potential existence. That's where we'll probably really see the change, in getting more people familiarized with the beast we are burdened to deal with; not here, but in the general public.

This information just came in today. Looks like HTC will jump to 4.3 for the Dev edition at least. Here's the full article: http://www.technobuffalo.com/2013/08/18/htc-one-developer-edition-jumping-to-android-4-3/

"adj: So great that any other word employed would be woefully insufficient, and would serve only to limit the sheer magnitude of the greatness intended as a descriptor."
For those who aren't familiar with the word.

Emotions Are High in Anticipation....

Emotions are high, but let's pause for a moment to thank the devs for their commitment to making this device the best it can possibly be. Without them, we'd just be a bunch of whining babies! Thanks devs and modders, very grateful for any of your contributions on this upcoming device!

Things to achieve.
1. Unlock
2. Root
3. Remove bloatware
Become N3 crack flasher... Raise it up to the devs
Tap'd via S4
Not to be a buzz kill but don't we essentially know based on the s4 that this won't be unlockable and potential non root? I would cry if this is the case.

Buttering up or just plain kissing ass?
We we'll see root. Bootloader unlock too but there may not be a way to avoid voiding the warranty with Knox. We'll see.

Corporate sales reps have indicated the Note 3 is being targeted like the S4 for gaining enterprise accounts, so seems a given it probably will be locked down like the S4. At least for the rom hungry there is SafeStrap, but the catch there is you lose at least 2GB more of internal storage to the new rom.

This safestrap is intriguing. I'm quite okay losing an additional 2 gigs for custom roms especially when the phone starts at 32 and you can add apps to SD.
