Bugs
can't remove nav-bar
can't mount usb storage - i think it's a build.prop error
superuser goes crazy at times - will replace with supersu
usual teamsupernova bugs
Installation instructions - same as LINics
Unzip rom and have the boot.img handy
Put the rom zip into the root of the sdcard.
Flash the rom using CWM. If you don't have it, please flash a custom kernel. (I recommend terrasilent)
When you're in CWM6, reflash the rom again.
After the second flash, flash the gapps zip.
Wipe your data.
Reboot into download mode and flash a GB kernel. (preferably the one you had before)
Reboot again into download mode after getting into CWM5.
Flash the boot.img with heimdall at the KERNEL partition
Note: If you're switching between versions or builds, there are simpler installation instructions:
flash this kernel with heimdall
boot into recovery
wipe cache + dalvik
install rom and gapps
Enjoy!

Once team supernova figures out how to deal with the recovery. If it were so easy, than wouldn't you think we'd already have cwm flashable packages?

FYI, Theraf you may have figured this out already but just incase and so everyone else knows if you flash the CM9 or LinICS and set the setting for USB storage then flash the way you described in the quoted post (NOT doing a wipe data/factory reset) you retain the use of the USB storage.
So here are the fixes for the nav bar and usb storage, just copy and paste into the build.prop
# Softkeys
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
# Mass Storage. You can change to mtp
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage

# I and XDA will not be responsible for any damage cause to your device.
# Do some research before testing these methods, if you feel any doubt.
# Never ever blame me for any damage cause to your device, I will simple laugh at you.
# Below given methods are 100% tested.
So, are you new to xda?
Are these things like CWM , ROMS seem new to you?
Don't worry it wont be from now
So, Lets start guys :silly:
Root your Galaxy Star
WHAT IS ANDROID ROOTING?
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's sub-system.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.
HOW TO ROOT YOUR SAMSUNG GALAXY STAR S5282 OR S5280
Well, there are several methods to root this device, choose which seems to be comfortable for you
METHOD 1
Its best and safest method to root this device but this method works with only some of the firmwares. So first give it a try, If it doesnt work for you, then try other methods
i) Download Cydia Impactor tool from here
ii) Enable USB debugging in device.
iii) Now,choose puch supersu su binary to /system/xbin
iv) Click on push, and voila your device is rooted.
v) Download Superuser from playstore
METHOD 2
Its the easiest of the method but main drawback of this method is that you have to download file of large size.
i) Download pre-rooted firmware from here
ii) Make sure your device is switched off.
iii) Download Odin 3.07 from here
iv) Now, Boot into Download Mode,Press and Hold Volume Down+Home Button+Power Button together.
v) You should see a warning , Press Volume Up and continue (Don’t worry about any warning).
vi) Launch Odinv3.07.exe file from the extract folder of Odin.zip file. Connect your device to PC with USB cable.
vii) Wait until Odin show Added message in lower left message box in Odin and also ID:COM turns yellow.
viii) After your device is detected by Odin , Click on PDA button given in Odin.
ix) Select the pre_rooted_system.tar file from the extracted folder of Pre-Rooted Firmware you download above.
x) Click on Start button and flashing process will start.
xi) Now your device will reboot automatically.
Thats it… Your Samsung Galaxy Star is rooted now…
METHOD 3
I think, its the best method as you have to download only some small files and its 100% working method
i) Flash CWM Recovery (Follow below procedure)
ii) Select Install zip from sd card.
iii) Select update SuperSU.zip.
iv) Click yes.
v) Reboot your phone now. Voila! Your device is rooted now
Note: All these methods require usb drivers to be installed in your pc, you can download usb drivers from here

WHAT IS CWM RECOVERY
ClockworkMod Recovery
ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) is a replacement recovery option for Android devices, made by Koushik "Koush" Dutta. It is based on the Android 2.1 (Eclair) recovery image. Features include Nandroid backup, adb shell, advanced update.zip options (ignore asserts and signature checks), and file browser for choosing update.zips
The Rom Manager app may be used for installing CWM, overwriting the device's stock recovery. As with the stock recovery, CWM can apply software changes to the device. Unlike the stock recovery, CWM is able to entirely replace the device's primary Android operating system ("flashing a new ROM"), including with aftermarket replacements such as CyanogenMod. Once installed, CWM it is accessed by turning your phone off, then triggering the bootloader prompt by holding down some device-dependent button combination as it is turned on.
CWM is also known as clockwork and CW recovery.
PROCEDURE -
1. Install USB drivers from here
2. Download ODIN v3.07 from here
3. Download and extract the ClockworkMod tar file from HERE
4. Boot phone into ODIN mode. Forget? ( Press Volume Down + Home Key + Power key simultanaeously)
5. Connect your device to your PC via USB
6. Flash the tar file using ODIN v3.07
Enjoy!
Note - In some of the devices key combo doesnt work so you can fix it easily from here

WHAT IS CUSTOM ROM?
A custom ROM is one that has undergone any modification from being a pure distribution of Android. Google make the Android source code available for anyone to play around with, and people take this code and alter it for themselves. Whether to add features they come up with, or to redistribute it with fun tweaks and additions. So a custom ROM can range in definition from some custom code modifications to make Android run better on a device, all the way to changing the homescreen, background services, and default software.
GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR FLASHING ANY ROM ON S5282
i) Put rom zip in extsd (Memory Card)
ii) Boot To recovery using key combination(Volume UP+ Home + Power), adb or thru some app.
iii) Do Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
iv) Flash rom by choosing option of Install zip from sd card and then select ROM zip file.
v) Now, Flash any other fix.zip file which is given by ROM dev.
vi) Now, Select Reboot System now
Enjoy the ROM!

WHAT IS STOCK FIRMWARE
This is the operating system in its default form, without any modifications made to it except for any device-specific support required to run it on the particular device. Truly stock firmware provides the standard user experience of the operating system without any cosmetic or functional changes made. These days, truly stock firmware is primarily found in cases where both the device and the operating system is built by the same company. Amongst modern mobile devices, examples of truly stock firmware can be found on Apple’s iOS devices, Palm’s WebOS devices and some Android devices shipped without any modifications made to the operating system by their manufacturers.
PROCEDURE
i) Download stock firmware from here & EXTRACT IT
ii) Download Odin 3.07 from here
iii) Then connect your mobile to PC in download mode(Volume UP + Home + Power)
iv) Press Volume UP
v) Open Odin 3.07 and the box will turn blue after you connect your device.
vi) Click on PDA and select the .tar file of stock rom
vii) Click Start
viii) Your phone would be restarted automatically.
Congrats! You are on stock

@Niku-Droid nice idea..
and here's some suggestions.. hope you don't mid :fingers-crossed:
* revert the font size of the disclamier/warning and the other texts.. the warning is in smallest text and other text are way too big.. it's good to use red for warning.. also, yellow texts on white aren't easily readable.. just stick to black, blue, red and maybe one/two other colors..
* while users shoul be allowed to choose whatever rooting method they use, also provide a recomended method to which is easy and convenient
in our case, cwm method.. cydia won't work on newer firmwares. so on cydia and pre rooted firmwares, they will have do download and flash 450+mb of file with odin.. whilst they can download 9mb of cwm just to get root..
* the dl link of cwm recovery you have provided is old one.. it wipes whole, /data partion when wiping data, so all the internal memory is lost.. the updated recovery also, allows installing zip files from internal memory... please suggest to use this updated, cwm recovery instead of the old one.. [Updated Recovery] CWM 6.0.3.7 for GT-S5282 and GT-S5280
* some of these phone have problem of not being able to boot into recovery with ( Volume Down + Home Key + Power key).. it would be good to point them to this thread, [GT-S5282] Fix Recovery Key Combo Problem for Galaxy Star Duos

did you miss samsung usb drivers in method 1 and 2. it's needed for all 3 methods.. so just say.. make sure you install usb drivers before any method..
also link to usb drivers.. people are just lazy to use google @[email protected]
and the cwm method needs some more steps for first time.. battery pulling and flashing fix.zip..

Now i can just give ppl the thread link instead of telling all the steps again and again
@Niku-Droid
flashing CWM for first time with Odin needs a little more steps.. if anyone just flashes, stock recovery will be installed again.. and i'm too lazy to write complete steps..
* power off wait for 10 secs
* boot into stock recovery with key combo
* pull out battery, put batter back
* boot into download mode connect to pc
* flash tar file with odin.. normal PDA flash, checkboxes are cute but don't touch 'em.
* it will auto reboot into cwm, now flash fix-recovery.zip with cwm..
* power off from cwm
* boot again to recovery with key combo to see if working..

okay.. just checked..
the fix-recovery.zip files deletes install-recovery.sh in /system/etc.... but the file is not present in latest stock firmware... it is used to check hash of recovery partition at every boot and flash stock recovery if it changed.. this is to replace any custom recovery like cwm or twrp with stock recovery for an OTA update..
so i guess sammy insn't planning any OTA for galaxy star/duos.. :silly:

you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you. Hard. A lot.
Pre-requisits:
A1. Download Odin 3.07: HERE
A2. Download newest TWRP Recovery: HERE
A3. Download Phone Drivers [most not needed so only download when your phone doesn' get detected from your PC]: COMING SOON!
B1. [Optional - only if you need root on your Stock Rom] Download CF-Autoroot: HERE
B2. [Optional - only if you don't want to have a so called Triangle which says you that your device doesnt have OFFICIAL software anymore, check more!] Triangle Away: HERE
C1. Download your Android 5.1 Rom, here you can find some, but there will be some more:
- CyanogenMod 12.1 Offical [Most known Rom] http://download.cyanogenmod.or/?device=jfltexx
A. So first let us start with giving you a new Recovery. I decided to show you TWRP because this device is official supported and still recieves updates, there is also CWM/PhilZ Recovery, but there won't be updates and they had some Problems.
- Go to your PC and open Odin307.zip, now extract it somewhere and open Odin3 v.3.07.exe
- Take your S4 and bring it in Recovery Mode by shutting it down and then press Power+Home+Volume Down
- Now take your i9505 Galaxy S4 and connect it to PC with a USB Cable [it is recommended to use the cable which was delivered with the device]. Odin should now says something at ID:COM and under message should stand: "Added!".
- Check in Odin if ONLY THE FOLLOWING is crossed under Option: - Auto Reboot; F. Reset Time! NOTING MORE
- Now click in Odin on PDA and search your downloaded file called something like: "twrp-X.X.X.X-i9505.tar"
- Let Odin check the md5 and after this is finished press "Start". Give your phone some time (up to 10 minutes) and wait until there is "Passed" in Odin.
- Your device has now lost garantee (only when you don't use Triangle Away) and you have a custom recovery
B. [OPTIONAL!] When you want to use Triangle Away or need root a last time on your Stock Firmware you have to root it first.
- Open AutoRoot S4 i9505.zip, now extract it somewhere and open Odin3 v.3.07.exe from inside the folder
- Now click in Odin on PDA and search your downloaded file called something like: "CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9505.tar.md5"
- Let Odin check the md5 and after this is finished press "Start". Give your phone some time (up to 10 minutes) and wait until there is "Passed" in Odin
If you now want to use Triangle Away read more at @Chainfire 's Official XDA Thread!
C. Now we are at the Step to get your new Android Vanilla 5.1 Software. Go to the threads upside and take the Rom you most like, if you need help to decide I can help you
I would recommend you to use Nameless Rom because of the OTA Support, so you will recieve a message when there is a new Version and it will be installed automatically!
- Copy your downloaded Rom.zip and Gapps.zip to your micro SD Card from your S4
- Shut down your phone, then boot into Recovery by Holding Power+Home+Volume Up, release Power as soon as you see the "Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505" Logo, otherwise it will maybe reboot again.
- [Optional but recommended] You will see the TWRP Logo, then go to Backup and Restore, click on Internal Storage, now choose SD Card and cross everything and wait until the Backup is finished
- Go to Wipe -> Wipe Data and tipe in Yes; then go to Wipe -> Factory reset and swipe to factory reset; then go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe and cross Cache, Dalvik, Data, System, Internal Storage.
- Now go to install and choose you directoy where your downloaded zip's are, and choose your Rom, then press add more zip and choose your Gapps.zip. Swipe to install and wait until it has finished
- After finished isnatllation click on Wipe cache+Dalvik, after that click on reboot phone.
Finished! You have now the newest Android 5.1 on your S4!

Basic & Useful information for Galaxy J5 suite
In this thread you'll find useful informations along with a list of available Custom Roms and Kernels for our Samsung Galaxy J5.
Let me know if you think there is some information I should add in this thread, to improve it.
Post #1: What is a stock & custom rom, KNOX, root, custom recovery, download mode, xposed framework, kernel, customkernel, governor's, +
Post #2: List with custom roms and kernels available, how to flash/reflash stock rom, install custom recovery, how to root, how to flash a custom rom, how to UPGRADE & DOWNGRADE 5.1.1<=>6.0.1
Post #3: Credits
1) What is a Stock ROM?
Click to collapse
It's the original operating system provided by the manufacturer of the device.
2) What is a Custom ROM?
Click to collapse
It's the operating system ported, developed from source or derivated from Stock Rom, created by developers.
3) What is KNOX?
Click to collapse
"Knox is a new security feature that is being offered with certain Samsung handsets. It helps you to securely separate your personal and professional data. Essentially, you can have the benefits of using a ‘work phone’ without the need to carry, and secure, a separate device." -blog.clove.co.uk
"Normal(unrooted and so..) devices are flaged as KNOX Void Warranty 0x0 right from the factory.
When we flash items which weren’t signed by Samsung, it flags your device as KNOX Void Warranty 0x1.
So, flashing root/kernel/recovery/latest firmware by samsung/etc. will set KNOX status to 0x1." - omegadroid.co
Once the KNOX gets voided, you lose the warranty. (there are some cases where people say that Samsung repaired their phone for free while Knox was voided though)
4) What does mean ROOT?
Click to collapse
"Rooting, for those of you that don’t know, means giving yourself root permissions on your phone. It’s similar running programs as administrators in Windows, or running a command with sudo in Linux. With a rooted phone, you can run apps that require access to certain system settings, as well as flash custom ROMs to your phone, which add all sorts of extra features. If you’re on the fence about rooting, check out our top 10 reasons to root your Android phone for some motivation." - Lifehacker
5) What is a custom recovery?
Click to collapse
"A custom recovery is a third-party recovery environment. Flashing this recovery environment onto your device replaces the default, stock recovery environment with a third-party, customized recovery environment. This is a bit like flashing a custom ROM like CyanogenMod — but, instead of replacing your device’s Android operating system, it replaces the recovery environment.
"A custom recovery environment will do the same things as the stock Android recovery. However, it will also have additional features. Custom recoveries often have the ability to create and restore device backups." - howtogeek.com
On our Galaxy J5, you can enter the recovery by holding Power + Home + Volume UP buttons.
6) What is download mode?
Click to collapse
"Download mode is for flashing radio firmware/ROM upgrade through official means.
For example, ODIN is commonly used on Samsung devices to flash ROMs, those devices needs to be in download mode prior to flashing. However, ODIN is not the official way to do it, rather Kies, is the official route in upgrading the firmware, this is for Samsung devices for example." - android.stackexchange.com
You can enter the download mode by holding Power + Home + Volume down buttons.
7) What is the Xposed framework?
Click to collapse
"The Xposed Framework is a way to make system-level changes to your Android operating system without installing a custom ROM. All you need is root access." - howtogeek.com
For example, you can remap your phone buttons, gain control over apps permissions and some more privacy, customize your phone.
Take a look here.
8) What is SELinux?
Click to collapse
SELinux, which was introduced in Android 4.3, is a mandatory access control system built into the Linux kernel, in order to help enforce the existing access control rights (i.e.permissions), and to attempt to prevent privilege escalation attacks (i.e. an app trying to gain root access on your device).
9) What is Governor?
Click to collapse
A CPU governor in Android controls how the CPU raises and lowers its frequency in response to the demands the user is placing on their device. Governors are especially important in smartphones and tablets because they have a large impact on the apparent fluidity of the interface and the battery life of the device over a charge.
**source and each governor explained:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3048957 Thanks to @gsstudios for detailed explanation and hard work
thanks to @Sehab084 for directed me
10) What is Kernel and custom Kernel?
Click to collapse
KERNEL It's the core of the operating system that handles requests to and from the hardware, memory and process management and all the low-level stuff that is necessary for Android to be able to run.
CustomKERNEL Custom Kernels are nothing but modified stock kernel. Its done in order to achieve some features which is not present in the kernel provided by Manufactures. You can find one for your device if anybody has created a custom kernel for your "device". Kernels are device specific too.

Nandroid backup
Basically, this so-called Nandroid backup can save you a lot of trouble in case you soft-brick your device. In just a few clicks, your whole system is restored and your device is fully functioning again, as if nothing ever happened. In this short guide, I’ll give you the simple steps so that you can make a backup yourself to be on the safe side. I’ll also show you how you can transfer your backup to your computer so that you don’t need to keep it on your device to save space.
How to do a Nandroid backup
1. Prerequisites
In order to be able to make a Nandroid backup, your Android device has to be rooted and needs to have a custom recovery tool.
2. Go into recovery
To get into your recovery, you first need to boot your device into the bootloader. This can be done by turning it on holding down the Power + Home + Volume UP buttons.
3. Do the nandroid backup
Once you’re inside the recovery it’s a piece of cake.
TWRP:
Go to “Backup”
Choose the partitions you want to back up. If you’re not sure what to choose, simply leave the default selections.
Make the backup by swiping to the right at the bottom.
Your device should now perform the backup process, once that’s done you can reboot your device.
4. Transfer the Nandroid Backup to a computer
Now, depending on how many apps and files you installed, your backup might take away quite some space. To avoid that, you can transfer the whole Nandroid backup to your computer and delete it on your device. Should you ever need to restore your device, you only need to transfer it back.
TWRP:
Connect your device to your computer and go to the TWRP folder on your device. In there, a folder containing your backup can be found. If you have several on your device, they will be separated so that you can choose only the folder you need. After you successfully copied the folder, you can delete the one on your device.
5. Restore your device using your Nandroid backup
That’s an easy one as well. Simply boot into recovery, select “Restore”.
Now you can choose the backup you want to use and restore your device. Once that’s finished, reboot your device and you’re done!

How to create a NAndroid Backup
(It's on a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, but its the same procedures)
big thumps up
As a newbie, I couldn't figure out why the custom recovery was not could not be flashed properly. Until I found this thread which told me the steps that I was missing:
03. Goto "settings>>about device" on ur j5 and tap built number 6,7 times to enable developer options.
04. Enable "OEM unlocking" and "USB Debugging" .
Click to collapse
Is it an idea to add those steps to the 'how to'? Or are these steps so obvious that only a newbie does not think about these steps?
For the rest, big thumps up for this Q&A and the 'how to's' !! :good::laugh: They are very useful for someone who is just starting to play around with this stuff. Now I'll try to go for a custom ROM and see if that might improve the performance.
