Fingerprint sensor friendly case - LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I had bought my v10 last week and got my third party case from eBay a couple of days ago and that's when I learned of the sensor issue. On mine, just like others, the sensor is nearly useless.
So I did some scouting and found the UAG case. I contacted the company in regards to this case and they claim the case works 100% with the fingerprint sensor. Has anyone here used the Urban Armor Gear case? Its a pretty pricey investment and don't want to flush more $$ on cases that just won't work.

Easy Fingerprint / Case fix
Just keep the case you like.
Cut a thin (~1") strip of aluminum foil long enough to connect both metal side rails (~3").
Lay it across the back of your phone so that it covers the bottom volume button and touches each metal side rail.
Then put the case on.
As long as your finger can brush up against the foil when you try to unlock, it works every time.
They'll eventually roll out an update that will address this, so don't worry about "cases that work", they're probably lying anyway unless they have a metal strip built in.

Hmmm. I'll try the aluminium strip thing.

I tried sending you a pic of mine, but this account is too new. Best of luck

Here is what I did http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64016697&postcount=12. It works fine for me just remember to smooth out the edges so they are completely flat else you have a chance of scratching the metal rails.

Hmm neat. That doesn't look too bad.

Alright. I added my foil as well. It works! Pretty dang ugly though. I didn't get mine as pretty. But hell, so far the sensor works!

All that really matters right? The pics I linked you were my second attempt the first wasn't as nice but then again I wasn't trying, it was more proof of concept. Good luck if you try it again.

Yep, just make it work. When I put the strip in, I didn't even cut around the hole like in your pics. It actually turned out pretty clean, the aluminum forms itself to the bottom button and looks kind of like a silver half-moon. I could see where yours could work better from some angles, but I never have problems, and am lazy. You can see it on imgur if you paste in mqJXBDY after the slash.

I actually didn't cut that part out I used the excess and rolled it up to line the edge of the cutout so when I touch the FPS my finger would still be in contact with foil without covering up the button. Pretty much my cuts of foil are the red lines with the arrows showing where the pieces were rolled to line the edge.

That is pretty slick.

Back cover without camera hole

I know this sounds strange, but I'd like a back cover for my G1 without the hole for the camera lens.
Does such an abomination even exist ready-made?

Hey I would also like to have a backcover for Blackstone with out a camera hole.. heard about non camera versions of phones in US not sure.. I work for a MNC IT company in India as a Oracle DBA so camera mobiles are not allowed in my company.
Please help me if you have any idea on this.

Why not just pop open the phone and remove the camera?
The bondo idea was the best, you could buy a new phone cover, chop out a section of the old one and use bondo to secure it, sand it down and it should look stock.

yeah I'd do that and just switch covers when you want
So in this area, you cannot carry a camera, but you can carry a sound recorder and 2-way communication device? Sounds odd.
I mounted a thin metal plate to the whole flat section of the back of my G1 so I could stick it to a large neo magnet that is glued to the dash in my truck. I don't care about the compass not working. Plus, I have tested it after about 6 months. If I put a regular back on it the compass still works great. No lasting effects.
I used the side of an old computer case. Cut out the shape I needed. I cut out a hole for the camera and speaker but you could just cover the camera and leave the speaker free. After I got everything smooth, I gave the whole thing a brushing with 150 grit sand paper in a uniform direction. Then I put it on my kitchen stove top on high for about 5 min to blue the metal. It gives it a great finish that resists rusting and isn't sticky or easily scratched like paint.

I am amazed that sticking your phone to a big-ass magnet all day has no lasting effects..
None what so ever. GPS works great. Accelerometer works great. Doesn't affect storage or memory. Again, I took the back cover off after about 6 mo. Compass works fine. Must be because it's solid state.
wonder if this guy ever figured it out?
very easy way would be to peel the piece of glass off the back of the phone cover and replace it with a piece of sheetmetal so they know there isnt a hole in it. you can get scraps from pretty much anywhere and shape them with a dremel...

Tilt 2 Strap/charm holder hole help

Ok so on the tilt 2 it has a strap/charm hole to put well a strap or charm on ur phone, and i used it alot! But recently the little plastic piece in the hole that holds the charm/strap snapped off on mine, Does anyone have any good suggestions on what I could do, I'm rather clumsy so a strap is rather needed
Where on your Tilt2 do you have such a hole? Mine does not.

Its called a hanger hole, its in the manual
http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/tech-specs/
No my plastic cover never came off
Anyone got and idea of how to fix it?
Looks like the holder is part of the phone frame. If the little T-shaped tab broke off, you may be SOL on fixing it. Perhaps you could buy a broken Tilt 2 off eBay (I've seen them) and transfer the part, but taking a phone apart and putting it back together correctly is not an easy task.
I never would have guessed that hole was for a strap or charm, although that's quite apparently what its for. The T-shaped tab under the battery covers sure doesn't look strong enough for the purpose.

I never, ever would have guessed that that hole was for hanging the little charms off of. I once wondered why this phone didn't come with something like that when most phones did.

Oh please do
I use a strap for mine. It works wonderfully!
Wow that's great. Does anybody know where to find a strap that would be good to wear my Tilt2 around my neck please? It would be great for working while wearing a wired headset. Hate keeping it in my pocket and I'm not happy with any of the holsters. Especially that oem one. That sucker will help a guy lose his phone in a hurry...
EDIT; Nevermind. I figured out to search for the words phone and lanyard on ebay. Decisions, desisions.
Memory card lanyards work fine too. I'm using a lanyard for a SanDisk MicroSD adapter for my phone. It works great.
Whoa, that little plastic bit holding the weight of a Tilt 2 on a lanyard or wrist strap? Sounds like tempting fate to me. I never have used a wrist strap on a phone and this definitely doesn't inspire me to try it now, lol. HTC should have built something a little more substantial than that into the frame if they wanted it to be really useful as a hanging point for the phone. I have been wondering where the strap on the HTC accessory page was supposed to attach, now I know.

You are correct. It does look cheesy. However, so far so good. I do think it is important to be certain that the string of the lanyard is seated to the base of the "T" opening really well. Fortunately that is easy to pull off. Also I don't think I'd swing it around by the lanyard with the cover off. After a few weeks of using a wrist strap and a neck lanyard I don't see any signs of stress on the plastic. So maybe it will hold out.

Leather case left scuff marks all over my NT

I bought this case:

Same here. Looks ugly when I take the device out of the case. But at the end of the day, I don't worry too much about it. I mean it is gonna always stay inside the case for me, ugly marks are all hidden.
I had this problem just leaving the nook in the box it came in. Where the microfiber was sitting on it, the edge turned black and scuffed. It's an unfortunate material choice. Probably better off to keep it in one in a case that covers the edges, so you won't ever see it.
Wow I bought the same case and got the same marks.
I also tried alcohol. Im at my wits end. Almost tempted to use some kind if abraisive, but dont want to hurt my nook's finish.

Seriously?
So, I bypassed this issue after hearing about the stain issue on the Roocase from this thread.
So, to get around the problem, I got an Otterbox Commuter, and put velcro on the back of it. It gives me Otterbox-level protection with the ability to have a stand that will hold it in portrait or landscape mode. Since the stand originally just uses velcro for this it functions exactly as it originally did.
I just got vecro adhesive tape from the local WalMart and put 2 strips on the middle part of the back of the Otterbox.
One thing I like about the case is that it has a little pocket that fits a microfiber screen cleaner cloth in a small plastic envelope.

BoxWave Colorsplash case review

First off, quick description of the case. It's a TPU (I think!) and hard case hybrid. Surrounding the phone is the TPU portion, which is sort of a sort of hard rubber which snaps over the phone securely, and the back is a hard plastic. I picked Black, so the TPU portion is black, the back hard plastic portion is clear.
I purchased the Boxwave to replace the Speck case I got at AT&T when I got my Note, and while the Speck case fit well and all of the buttons and holes lined up great, I didn't like how slick it is and how quickly was looking really scuffed up, plus it's IMPOSSIBLE to remove from the phone. So I decided to replace it and this BoxWave case like what I was wanting to have.
Now, back to the BoxWave case. The BoxWaves two microphone holes barely line up, the hole for both mics is large enough, but the microphone itself is right at the very edge of the hole. If the case slipped in the other direction I'm afraid it'd obscure the microphone. The top one as-is right now is obscured a little bit, the bottom isn't but not by much. The other annoyance is that the power button doesn't appear to be aligned correctly with the phone, as it's kind of mushy and hard to push, like it's hitting it from the side. The volume buttons seem okay, and the case is on right, even took it off and put it back on to make sure it was on right, it didn't improve.
I've also noticed that plugging in the charger is mushy, and turns out the case obscures the microUSB a bit too. Not enough to make it difficult to plug in, unplug on its own, or even need any "adjustment" to plug it in, but it's definitely in the way a bit.
The kickstand is pretty flimsy as well, time will tell how long it will last, as it's just two little nubs on the stand pushing against receptacles on the case, I can see if the phone got pushed against the stand it'd pop right out, but I mostly worry that it'll open etc while it's in my pocket. And the hinge sticks out of the back of the case, my wife has a SGS2 with a similar case by someone else and the back is flat on her phone.
It's much easier to get on/off the phone, and I like that the sides are textured. But otherwise not that great a case.
Pros
Really nice textured grip on side
Fits phone securely but not overly difficult to get in/out
Cons
Power button alignment is BAD, difficult to turn on
Both microphone holes aren't aligned well, mic hole is well to the edge of the case hole
Stand looks very flimsy
MicroUSB hole alignment is bad
Recommendation: Pass on this one, unless the alignment on the buttons and holes improves.
I bought this case for myself and my wife neither I if us has experienced any if the problems you mentioned with the holes being out of alignment. The kick had never opened in my pocket, and supports the phone well. The only complaint I have is the hinge sticking out of the back of the case, but that is a trade off for the super slim form factor. All in all, a terrific case for the price.

How about the power button, do you have to mash it a bit to make it work with the case on? My volume buttons are fine, they have a distinct firm press, just like without a case, and just like my Speck case did, but the Power button feels like it's hitting from an angle or something, mushy, annoying. I basically have to pinch the phone across the sides to turn it on one-handed, which always wind up changing the volume at the same time. Without a case, or with the Spec, I could just push the button in.
And the hinge sticking out annoys me more and more.. Can't really use the phone laying on the desk, it wobbles around.
Lots of pictures of it here, on BoxWave's website http://www.boxwave.com/at-t-samsung-galaxy-note-samsung-sgh-i717-cases-and-covers/colorsplash-at-t-samsung-galaxy-note-samsung-sgh-i717-case-with-stand/bwpdd/pkv-zvgp/
If wanted, I can take pictures of the microphone holes.. Not much to see, looks kind of like (. ) where the . is the microphone hole.
The power button is just fine. I think you may have received a defective case.

I use photo Bucket personally and you can link the pictures super easy that way.
I got a response from BoxWave yesterday, their response is:
The ColorSplash Case with Stand was designed to have indents for the power button and other features. This will require a stronger press in order to use these keys. We do this to protect the buttons and so they will not be easily pressed when traveling.

So sounds like it was designed this way. Maybe my case is out of some sort of tolerances but my power button requires a hard mash to operate in this case, so I'm working with them to return it and I'll be on the prowl again for another case... Don't think I'll bother with one with a kickstand, I haven't once used it, but the grippy sides of this case are very nice compared to my Speck, so I'll be looking for that.
My Boxwave (not the colorsplash, but another one from them) was the same way with the hard keys. I switched to a Hyperion case which has softer sides and lets you press the buttons easier. BUT - the opening for the micro USB is too small to let the OEM Samsung usb charger plug all the way in. I am going to have to widen it a little.

Thanks for that, because I was wondering about a different Boxwave, but it was going to be pretty low on the list..
They finally gave me an RMA, and made it clear that if I don't have the clear plastic baggy the case came in, that I'd pay a 15% restocking fee... Oh it just gets better and better..... I'll never buy another BoxWave product again.
I got a few alternative cases to try out, I'll have full reviews on 'em soon, but this $3 case feels, fits, and works MUCH better than the damn BoxWave.

fits pretty snug, kinda hard to get in..
all my buttons press in fine for me.
i also ordered the reg. one with no kick stand.. ill have to mess with that one again because one i first tried it on it seemed wayyyy off
the regular case with no kick stand fits good also.. have no problems with it.. the power button is a little mushy but ill get over it. its not that bad. i got the red case looks sexy on a white note.
update
i dropped my phone face down yesterday on concrete [my driveway]
i was pretty scared to pick it up, but when i did not a scratch or crack.. nothing
this case saved me right there, when it fell the edges of the case protected my screen from smashing on the ground
this case was well worth the 13 dollars.

WARNING: Choose your case wisely

Dear all,
I am here to just warn you of who ever owns a roxfit case, for those who have not stick it on to their phone you might want to reconsider before doing so. And for those who have it on already you might want to reconsider as well.
I bought this case like a month ago and used it for a month. Yes it is a good case "full protection" but when i tried to take it off today i realized the following:
1- it is a PAIN in the ____ to take it off, I am not even kidding. You might think why would you want to take it off? cause one day you want to clean up the dust, take out the sim card, or maybe switch case. I nearly had to break the top left corner, that little thin strand infront of the power button, and find something to stick into the top right.
Yes, i know it might not be the right way to take it off, but I have done some research and it seems like no one knows what is the "proper way" to take it off.
ANYWAY to get to the worst part
2- you know the inside of the case it has the black rectangle thingy with white words on it saying "roxfit?" Well, when i took off the case, i realized a bunch of little tiny black/grey dots on the back of my phone. No, I cannot rub it off, and i also tried erasing it off (which is not a good idea, cause it does rub off the anti-coating and causes it to look shiny which was described in another thread)
I know its just the back cover, but still...
Not trying to complain or anything, just keep your eyes open when choosing your case

I've have 2 of their products for my S, I have the hard shell, which I broke trying to take it off, those little this bits near the switches are a pain and a weak spot. This case had a thin felt patch inside to stop it rubbing the back of my S.
I also have the leather flip over case , i've had to stop using this because unlike the hard shell there is no felt patch inside to stop it rubbing , now I have marks on the back of my phone.
For the money I paid for these items, you'd think a bit more thought would go into the design...
I know, matte coating is not a cool thing, it just feels nice.
i dont know about your XPS but on mine the front bottom part where it says "xperia" that part is also glossy shiny, obviously that part's anti coating is rubbing off just by putting in my pockets.
this is what i am planning to do instead of making the same mistakes again.
the best thing to do is to get the zagg full body kit and protect the [ top, bottom, and the "xperia part" on the front ] and then get a case that only covers the sides and the back.
I had a roxfit and never had such problems.

Thanks for the warning. In the case thread there was someone saying something about the shell feeling loose. (maybe it was you, dont remember).
I guess thats what you get with a hard shell that covers the phone's back and sides completely unless it was made of two parts or from soft material like TPU. I thought of buying this on long time ago because none of the TPU cases had a good fitt (and the buttons still usable).
I never did buy this one, but thougt about it since it's for me the best next to my TPU preference. I'm using a (little reshaped with hot water) 'Nillkin' TPU case at the moment. I also have a 'Gimmick Five' hard case, but i don't like the edges (like almost all hard cases) , its not smooth when putting it in and getting it out of my pocket for a phone with this size. I also do't think those cases offer much protection.
If you're planning on buying a ZAGG invisibleShield read this too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27896421&postcount=6
and remember this skin is only for scratches not fall damage duh (cases/covers/shells might help a little with low height falls)

Can you give us some more info? how is the fit? is it easy to take out? do you have any little scratches of the coating on the edges?
@LitoNi The case is a little flexible, maybe it has also to do with how someone tries to pull of the case?
I took my case many times off. Yeah it's not easy, that's for sure but I can't confirm your other complaints.
My phone slipped once out of my hand and landed on hard ground. I just have a few scratches on the top right corner and bottom left corner.
without the case the damage would have been probably much worse.
The case also was damaged in the bottom.
Currently I'm waiting for my nillkin flip leather case. Hope it will protect the front as well now.
Edit: that is now a little embarrassing. I actually have a krusell case, but the should be the same
I have the roxfit hard shell as well. It fits perfectly and doesn't feel loose at all. As for taking it off, well yeah it's a snug fit, so taking it off requires a bit of fiddling. But it is definitely not impossible to take it off without breaking it. Then again you shouldn't have to take it off daily, so for me it's not a problem.I usually just push the bottom corners of the case down, then you can stick your nail through the hole on the bottom and just push the phone out completely. Not that hard to do.
Also mine does not leave any traces on the phone. I'm pretty happy with this case.

i guess i was just the unlucky one with the stains.
anyway i changed the title so it wont be directly talking about roxfit, but cases in general
taking it out is slightly a pain in the ass... you need to flick it out from the powet button corner follow by volume side... one you flick it past both the 2 buttons, the rest is a breeze...
no there's no stain on the phone....
thanks

i start with the left side and bottom, then top side and last the right side. works everytime
Let me add that there is also a slider shell case: Incipio EDGE Hard Shell Slider Case
But please talk about this on the Xperia S Case show thread and let this thread be only for the Roxfit and Krusell shells :fingers-crossed:
It has done exactly the same to my phone....It's a joke!!!!!
