Best Free Icon Packs
When slapping together a new design for an app, it's nice to have some icons packs to sift through if you need anything in particular. I figured I'd share some of my favorite free icons packs with you guys, because my friends all ditched me again.
Flat Icons
Flat icons are icons that are void of any 3D effect or dropshadows. These usually look great if you are using a material design theme for your app.

If you don't like any of the icon packs that you see here, I would recommend checking out Media Loot where they have tons of icons packs for just a few bucks. Like what's $4 to you anyways? That wont even buy you a back rub. How on earth do you think you'll get a back rub for $4? Where do you even get your back rubs from? Brb my dog just ran away.

I finally found a clean a consistent bunch of icons for my dock.
Weird issue: applying icons to dock with go launcher caused a jagged resize. I had to rescale the icon myself to my native hdpi resolution (72x72).

Ok fellow XDA members. I recently started using an app called Floating Soft Keys, made by @rhoadster91
This app made me love my 10.1 p7510 tab again.So I decided to make a theme for it.. ( it's easy.. )

Ideos-like touch key icons theme (Ideos Accents White)
- Still visible with any type of BG.
- Works best at size 70 and a transparency value of around 40.
- Made by a novice designer(me).
- Quite Simple to make.

I made a simple theme by editing a few pictures i found online and making a few myself in ms paint. I used online-image-editor.com to add transparency too. I hope you guys like it. Actually I first made only a full white one but then as it would be invisible on a white background, i played around and made a few variations of the same thing. Use the one you like or make your own combos.
I've added a screenshot of the bordered white theme i'm using now with the size 27 and 3 pixel spacing.
I posted this in the original thread of the app. Please use the link to download them. I'm planning to use the same template and make one with black and white bands and leave all other insides and outsides transparent so that it will be even more minimalistic and still be usable in all backgrounds. I'll post that too when i do it.
I made the minimalistic one i told above about. This is the one i'll be using from now. Its more transparent, smaller filesize but still visible on all backgrounds. Feel free to mix-n-match to make your own theme.

Designing Your App Icon
Get an Idea
Alright so you've got your app idea and maybe a basic wireframe layout. You sit there thinking "What is the perfect icon to represent my 'Goat in heat detector app'"? Well let's start by thinking about what is the simplest image that gives some sort of representation of what you're all about. It could be a mascot, a letter, a prop or anything that sounds good to you. For this, we will want a goat engulfed in flames as a play on "Goat in heat". It's clever and tasteful.
Design Guidelines
Once you have an idea, you'll be eager to whip something up in AI. But wait just one second, space cop. There are tools to help you design your icon within Google's material design standards. It's very simple and it will help you make a great looking app icon.

The way that Google lays out their guide is in such a way that you do not have to be very good at graphic design to obtain great results. It's a very simple and fun process.
Inspiration
Ok so you've done all of your reading and know how to make an icon. Now it's time to get inspired! Take some time to look at icons that have been created by others. My favorite place to go is the freebies sections on the MaterialUp website.

Browse through here and download some of the free icons that are available. You'll find something that will spark your creativity in here for sure.
