Need help fixing my phone after trying to root for the first time - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got my old Galaxy s2 and decided to root it, cause if I brick it, It wouldn't matter much. After using Odin to put a kernal on it, it only goes to the startup screen with the warning triangle. I can get it to the CW recovery screen, but it doesn't do anything after making a selection. I'm now stuck and not sure what to do. I'm super new at this, if not obvious.

Odin flash your stock firmware and start again......

Where would I that?

You get the firmware from sammobile dot com Or samsung updates dot com.
Odin can be found on xda and the Samsung USB drivers can be found on here too.
You can get Odin and the drivers here.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/guide-t2345831
Most of the advice in that thread can be followed even if you don't have any problems with odin flashing.

Took me a little while to finally find a copy of the stock firmware. Flashed it, and now the phone boots up and says,
'gaudiuscc_bootimage.jpg' draw failed

If you flashed 4.0.4 don't try this, but have you tried booting into recovery to do the wipes?
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg

It has Clock Work on it, but when I make a selection on the recovery screen it doesn't do anything. It goes to a black screen with the CW logo, where the new menu should be. If I hit the power button again it takes me back to the main menu. I can't even shutdown the phone from the recovery screen.

If you flashed a stock firmware then it won't have ClockworkMod recovery on it....
It should be Android 3e recovery.
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg

I don't know why I thought that it still had Clock Work on it. I've got it to the recovery screen, and it won't let me make a selection. It makes it seem like the power button dosen't work, but if it didn't there would be no way to turn it on.

I don't know why that's happening either, but as a workaround you could try installing the correct PhilZ recovery....They come as zip or tar files....so you can use the tar file with odin.
PhilZ is a touch based recovery, so you don't need to rely on using the buttons.

Alright, so now the recovery works, even if it wasn't touch enabled. So now I think I'm at the point at which I first tried to root it a while back. I think I installed some wrong firmware. It's the Alltel model (and maybe also the US cellular model), but the AT&T intro plays then freezes. Can I just install a different ROM on it?

What is your Model Number? GT-I9100,GT-I9100G, or what?

Then you should flash the firmware that is only for that model number.

I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Every download link is dead or just not there anymore.
And would I flash it the same way I have with the recovery stuff?

Hmmm dead download links for the Galaxy S2? Sorry but I can't help you if there is no more download link for your stock firmware.

Have you fixed it??
If not have a read of this and see if it helps:- Go to Galaxy SII General forum Find This:- [GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII (I9100G/M/P/T VERSION INCLUDED) By Phistachio.
I could not find an exact match of my phone for firmware and in the end went for the country /region and local service provider. I guess I got lucky! Once you get JB or ICS running you can load a recovery like TWRP and then "Progress" to your choice of custom ROMs.

[Q] Getting clockwork mod on my SGS2

I have been reading a few thread about CWM and getting it to work, but noone is really clear and concise on the matter as there are a lot of controversies in the descriptions.
I have rooted my SGS2 using the following guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
But instead of using any of the 2 kernels suggested I went with:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/338...1691836__hl__root__fromsearch__1#entry1691836
Sooooo, how do I go from here to get CWM.
Just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM recovery instead of the stock one.
That can be CF-Root, the one from the CWM thread or even my one.
And once "moved" over through Kernel one can upgrade CWM or I can't?. And I thought any kernel other then the stock ones would give you a yellow triangle on boot.
And I wonder why installing CWM has to be even more bothersome on the Samsung then on any other ANdroid device I have owned, same goes with rooting as well.
And:
Note about CWM recovery backup:
When you perform a backup in CWM recovery, the progress bars are not moving and no filenames are shown, it might look like the phone hangs and does nothing.
This is not the case! The backup works and will finish eventually, restoring them also works fine, it's just no progress during the backup process is shown.
Click to collapse
I just HATE HATE HATE that. I have been trying to find a version of CWM that actually showed the progress bars and file names and has been unable to even when I had my LGO2x. So on the LG i downgraded to 3.2.0.0 in order to get the progress bars back. And I want the progress bars, so that begs the question. Does such a version even exist anymore?
The recovery is part of the kernel (on the SGS2) so you can't replace/upgrade the recovery without the kernel, i.e. you must flash a kernel that has the recovery you want.
I don't find CWM install to be bothersome....
And yes, every custom (=non Samy signed) kernel gives you the yellow triangle, but there's ways to work around that.
Last not least, CF-Root's version of CWM shows the progress properly.

I was not talking about the CWM install alone. I mean rooting etc is more "bothersome" on the SGS2 then I have been used to from other phones. Both my HTC Desire and LGO2x didnt need to get 2x kernel exchanges for Root etc . Not that I cant cope with it, I just find it rather wierd why Samsungs require those extra steps when others do not

I will assume that if I follow CF-Roots guide regarding the CF-Root kernel, then I would not get a yellow triangle on boot?. Or is there something specific I would have to do for that not to happen?
Yeah, well on HTC and others you need to unlock (S-OFF) the bootloaders first, Samy delivers with unlocked bootloaders from the start, so they put in this "notification" of a custom kernel.... yah, it's easy to cope with
If you also follow the triangle-ridding part of CF's post, then yeah, IIRC he put a smallish howto into the release post.
Basically it's flashing a stock kernel via Odin and then the custom one again from the (rooted) running OS.

Hi,
I have a small issue. You can see the whole description here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466542
If you didn't check the link, a short description.
I made a root with ODIN + S2 Root
Made a nice backup with CWM (CMW came with CF-Root).
Then I'd flash the original kernel
Now of corse I don't have any more the CWM
I've installed the Rom Manager. It doesn't give any result.
Cannot get into recovery mode all because of this original kernel
If I understan, after what you just said.I can flash back, with ODIN the CF-Root that I have and then the issue can be solved?
You can just flash the cf-root again and are good to go!

Man it very easy. Just open Odin, put cf root in pda, put phone in download mode and flash. Done in 5 seconds. That it!
Just make sure you use the correct file for your firmware. If not, no problem. Just find the correct one and reflash.

[HELP] Softbricked S2 and can't fix.

I've basically soft bricked my phone and haven't got a clue how to fix it. I've read everything and tried everything and still can't get it working with my knowledge.
I tried to flash resurrection v1.0 but phone just hung on the GSII startup screen and froze. I've tried different kernels so that i can flash from external SD card but whenever i try this, it always says bad file (no matter what file i try use to flash). When i try flash from the internal SD card, it says its all successful (for the resurrection 1.0) but i'm back to where i started.
I think i need to flash the firmware using odin but i can't find the right files. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this issue? I've been playing around with it for 10 hours roughly now.
The original kernel i used when i flashed to resurrection 9.4 was for XWKI4.
Thanks.

I'm not sure that guy (Kaffee4Eck) knows what he's talking about anyways. In another thread, he also suggested an I9100G user to flash Siyah kernel.
Right i've got it back working with 2.3.4 i think it is, however i still don't want to give in to getting resurrection 1.0.
Are there any steps i'm missing which causes it to hang on GSII startup then restart into the stock kernel? Tried flashing the old bootloader as well which didn't help.

If you're having trouble flashing a custom ROM, first place to start would be the thread for that particular custom ROM.
All custom ROMs should have detailed installation instructions. Make sure you are following them to the letter.
If you are flashing kernels, you must make sure you flash a kernel meant for your phone, and meant for your build. Hang on boot screen usually means you have a file not compatible with your build of Android. Could be kernel, but could also be another system file.
I have been searching, its what im currently doing now but everyone seems to have got it working or have completely different problems to me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
Literally followed it step for step, there isn't much to it. When i did 9.4 it had the same steps and that all worked fine, so i must be missing something pretty damn important here.
So when you say:

what do you mean by restart into the stock kernel? This part of the sentence doesn't make sense.
Are you saying it is hanging on the boot logo for a very long time, then it boots normally, but you are not on the new ROM?
Sorry, what i was trying to say was the galaxy s 2 logo shows for about 5 seconds then the phone restarts itself into recovery mode (which is the new kernel included with the resurrection 1.0 flash).

And now this sentence doesn't make sense.
So when it restarts into recovery, it is stock recovery instead of CWM recovery? Is that what you mean?
Stock recovery will only have like 4 or 5 line entries, with no options to back up/restore. CWM recovery will have substantially more options.
EDIT to add: BTW - did you see under the "Rom Installation (please don`t miss any step! )" section... there is text that says: "NOTE: İF YOU WANT FLASH SOMETHİNG FROM CWM RECOVERY FİRST YOU MUST İNSTALL CWM.ZİP FROM STOCK RECOVERY MOD(APPLY UPDATE FROM EXTERNAL STORAGE AND CHOOSE CWM.ZİP AND İNSTALL)
AND NOW TOUCH RECOVERY MODE WİLL APPEAR THAN YOU CAN FLASH ZİP FİLES"
---------- Post added at 03:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:11 PM ----------
Also, you seem to be mixing up the terms kernel and recovery. They are NOT the same. You should read up on what those two terms actually mean.
"So when it restarts into recovery, it is stock recovery instead of CWM recovery? Is that what you mean?"
Yeah thats what i meant sorry, been a long day lol. I don't really get what the last bit means..

So... You know there's also a video guide on installation in that thread too, right? I've never installed this ROM, so I've about reached the limit of how far I can help you if you don't understand that last bit, as you say.
Indeed, i've watched it several times. Thats what i don't get. Everything looks the same, yet i'm the one with the problem lol.
I basically go into custom recovery, install the 3 things (rom, and both gapps), clear the cache and dalvik cache yet it goes freezes on logo then restarts into stock recovery.

Galaxy S iii won't boot, stuck on logo screen, can't enter recovery.

I have a rooted Australian Galaxy s iii i9300 running stock android 4.0.4 and Siyah Kernel V.1.5.3, both of which I flashed about 3 weeks ago.
My phone has been running perfectly, last night before going to bed I plugged my phone into the charger as usual. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with it, I didn't alter any settings or install anything new and it has been weeks since I've flashed anything. I woke up this morning to see my phone stuck on the 'Galaxy S iii' logo screen as if it had automatically rebooted itself during the night and got stuck. I've tried removing the battery and turning it back on several times but it just keeps getting stuck on the logo screen. I can't enter clockwork recovery mod but I can still enter download mode.
Is my phone bricked?
How did this happen when I didn't even do anything?
What should I do?
Should I try re-flashing the stock ics rom?
Re-root
Try re-rooting it with Odin (from Download Mode), then you might be able to go into Recovery Mode.
Have you recently installed any app? Coz there must be a reason for this to happen.
If the above comment does not work, next step would be to order a jig to force it into download mode.

Really? I did a quick search before posting this, sorry for the repost. Did anyone come up with a solution in previous threads?
I've searched and searched but I still can't find the 3 file firmware. I don't even know what I'm looking for really. Can someone please link me to a 3 part Rom compatible with my phone?
While my search for similar problems before creating this thread yielded very few results, I have since found the other threads Ch0ka was referring to by searching 'There is no PIT partition'. It seems that if flashing a three part file and repartitioning with Odin doesn't work, the general consensus is that I'll have to send it to a service center for repair. Haven't I voided the warranty on my phone by rooting it? will they be able to tell I've rooted it or is it damaged beyond that point? I really can't afford to be paying for repairs right now.
I'm so upset, I still don't understand how my phone could just brick itself overnight! Could someone please give me some advice?

Thanks for replying. My problem is that I don't know what to look for. How do I know which one has 3 files? Which one do I need? Sorry, I know this seems like a stupid question but I've never used a 3 part Rom before, I have no idea what I'm doing. Isn't it really important to use the right PIT file?

I cannot reach the setting to do a factory reset. My UI doesnt start and the button combo doesnt take me to a menu were i can factory reset the device.
What other way is there, trough odin maybe??

Back/Search button not working.

Hello ,
I recently got a samsung galaxy s2 i777 at&t , everything was working just fine until i installed jelly bean 4.1.2 !
But the problem is i installed jelly bean i9100 international version , im still a noob and i didn't know that.
The phone is working fine but the back and search button are not responsive i already did a factory reset/wipe and i installed some roms
like UCKH7_stock_root but that didn't help.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance !
The key mapping is different for the button configuration on the I9100. It is possible to use I9100 firmware on the I777 but you must use a kernel made for the I777, and there are a few other modifications that would be necessary such as the key mapping file.
You should probably flash SGH-I777 firmware, either stock or custom. You can do some reading in the forums here to see what is available. The stock 4.1.2 UCMD8 for the I777 is available in the Download Repository.
Please post a link to the I9100 firmware that you flashed, and I will be able to tell you how exactly to proceed. We need to know if you flashed the I9100 secondary boot loader or not.

Just download Shostock3 ROM from the SGH-I777 Android Development forum and get into recovery and, Wipe data/factory reset->
Clear cache->
Go to mounts and storage->Format system->
Get back and go to advanced-> Wipe dalvik cache->
Get back and choose install new zip-> Flash your Shostock3 zip. Done. Hope this helped

No big deal if you have flashed an I9100 ROM. U wont brick your phone as far as you can enter the recovery. Jus do the above. U'l be good to go.

Did you flash the SHOstock3 zip from recovery?
Definitely hardware problem. I mean if you clean flashed an i777 ROM(Maybe Shostock3 as per my suggestion) an you still cant get the buttons working, then it certainly is hardware issue.

Or maybe he didn do a proper flash. And its not about jumping to conclusions. I have had this problem twice, all I did was jus clean install an I777 ROM and everything was back in work again. I have this experience. So i thought it could be an hardware issue..or maybe an unclean flash which I didnt include above.

@creepyncrawly This is the ROM he flashed.
http://www.teamandroid.com/2013/02/...lly-bean-firmware-galaxy-s-ii-i9100-download/
This is the official JB. I have no idea here. I thought he flashed an custom ROM. But this is an I9100 official JB. There maybe a different solution for this and I certainly have no idea.

I'm downloading the file now to see exactly what is in there. May take up to an hour. I'll post suggestions after I look at it.
So , what are the results creepyncrawly ?
@AdnaneHMD,
The firmware you installed, "I9100XWLSD_I9100ITVLS1_I9100XXLS8_HOME" contains the I9100 secondary bootloader. You may find that when you try to put your phone into download mode, the regular I777 sequence of holding down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable will not work for you. This behavior is governed by the secondary bootloader, and I am pretty sure that the I9100 sequence is different.
You will need to first flash the SGH-I777 secondary bootloader (sbl.bin) by itself using Odin. You can find the .tar file you need in the Download Repository. Link is in my signature. Put the sbl.tar in the PDA slot.
First, open Odin on your desktop. Odin3 v1.85 is preferable. If the regular sequence does not work, you can put your phone into download mode with a jig, if you have one. Or you can try this: pull the battery and leave it out. Then hold down vol down (or both volume buttons) while plugging in the USB cable. The computer will provide the power.
If you had to flash with the battery out, remove the USB cable and insert the battery, and start the phone. The regular I777 sequence for download mode should now work.
Next, you want to flash the SGH-I777 stock firmware full package. You will find an Odin flashable tar version in the Download Repository. I would suggest that you flash the 4.1.2 UCMD8 version. Once the phone boots, you should be fully working. Now, if you want to root I would suggest you use Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit. Then you can install Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro and use it to install a custom kernel followed by custom firmware. Or you can leave your phone unrooted and stock if you prefer.
If you have questions, please ask. I will be traveling out of town later today, so will be away from the computer over night.

@AdnaneHMD,
1.) Odin3 flashable tar: i777 UCKH7 sbl.tar (Thanks to agh1701)
Use Odin3 v1.85 or v1.82 and put the sbl.tar in the PDA slot.
2.) This is the complete stock UCMD8 Binaries downloaded from samfirmware at sammobile.com. Please note, this package contains boot.bin, sbl.bin and param.lfs, plus cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin and zImage. I777UCMD8 Full Odin Flashable tar: I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5.7z 427.02 MB (Contains I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5)

The assumption I have been using is that your phone was working normally with no issues until you flashed the I9100 stock firmware and then immediately upon rebooting the buttons failed. If that scenario it's accurate, then it's a pretty good chance, in fact almost a certainty, that the issue is firmware related, and not a hardware failure.
However, if the above is true, then the fix I suggested should have corrected the issue. Since it did not, we need to find where the facts deviate from the above. Look in about phone and report what firmware is currently installed. Then we need to know, would it be before you flashed the I9100 firmware, or during the return to I777 firmware?

OK, try this file:
https://copy.com/knvYJ
It's a flashable zip file that will restore the key libs to their i777 orientation. In the old days it was one of the files we used to rely on when we were manually porting 9100 roms via recovery only.
This should solve your problem... but then again, creepy's method also should have worked! Regardless, try it and let us know.

[Q] Can't reboot into recovery

I have a Galaxy mega 6.3, rooted for access, but still running stock.
I can't get into recovery. What ever method I try the phone simply reboots (a normal reboot, back into full operation).
Can anyone offer any help, please?
I'm not very experienced with flashing and ROMS, all I want to do is a simple factory reset, but I can't do so, as I can't get into recovery.
Many thanks.

Power off. Hold Home Button...Volume up....Power button.
When phone vibrates, release the Power Button but continue to hold Home and Volume Up....this will boot in to your stock 3e Recovery.

Thanks guys. I'm not using a custom ROM. I've simply given the phone root access. I think the reason for my problem is that some time ago I attempted to install CyanogenMod using Odin. That wasn't successful and I gave up; The phone works fine, except it seems that in some way I've screwed up recovery.
Dparrothead1, I've tried the Home/volume/power buttons method several times, as well as various recommended software and app methods. But all that ever happens is the phone re-boots normally.
Actually with the mega you only have to hold the power + vol up buttons only to get into the recovery. .even when you want to go into download mode the home button is not required to get into these modes, but phone must not be powered on when doing this..

Many thanks, guys, but I do know how to reboot using the hardware keys!! I've previously rebooted this phone a number of times. This is a genuine problem I'm experiencing here. I tried entering recovery through ROM Manager and another "boot into recovery" app, and always the phone just fully reboots.
Maybe the i527m I have is different that way..then you might have to flash the recovery again to your phone and sorry about the button info as you knew that already...what model do you have.?

No worries, I'm very grateful for the help. I have GT-i9205 running Android 4.2.2. Under Kernal version it says 3.4.0, and then "[email protected] #2".
Would you be able to point me in the direction of a tutorial for flashing the recovery? I just started to follow the cyanogenmod tutorial again, but the first step was to boot into recovery!!

Your welcome..Okay if you are going to try CM11 go to @Silesh.Nair post here and in his signature click on the mediafire link that says "here" and once on the server you can choose from overclock kernels or recoveries or roms and then go into recoveries and choose which custom recovery you want to use CWM or TWRP (tar file to flash with odin) as you will need one of these recoveries to flash the new kitkat roms as these recoveries have the kitkat support..otherwise it will not flash the new 4.4 kitkat roms, and then get this UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.93.zip and you do not have to unpack this file, and put in on your internal sdcard of your phone and flash it in the custom recovery you installed to give you superuser status.
Then go into the roms folder and choose the rom you like (all roms in that list work) as you mentioned CM11 and these roms are newer then the link you provided in your post and just choose the newest build and flash with odin..remember to unpack the rom from the zip file first to get the tar file inside to flash with odin..good luck and if you need any help just post.
