Anyone else having auto brightness issues ? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Its just too damn bright !! Mine seems to get stuck at higher levels and doesnt automatically dim, unless the change is quite dramatic (like dark room). I have to manually tick auto brighness off then on to make it work again.
I have tried using lux and it seems to be working perfectly so i am guessing its a software issue from LG side.
Anyone else having similar issues ?

Yea, it's too bright
I completely agree with you. Mine always seems to default to 61% which is too bright in normal light (45% is ideal for me). It would be nice if you could set the baseline "auto" brightness level and let the sensor adjust from there.

Well i have done some research and seems like an app called ''Content adaptive backlight'' is the cause of issue. Seems like LG have managed to produce the same issue that plagued G2. I really hope they fix it in future patches.

I have compared G5 MM rom to my G3 and there seems to be no Content adaptive brightness app on my G3 and because of that there is no auto brightness issue on my G3.
I have done more research and there are quite a few latest phone (6p, S7 ) affected by this issue where either brightness is either too low or high.
Only solution is to either get a custom rom or get an update from carrier/manufacture.

I noticed this as well.. I am sure it will eventually get corrected via software.

Chiming in to say same issue here. Doesn't really bother me tho.

Same boat its too bright or dark and when battery saver kicks in you cant see the screen at all.

Agreed. Too bright, except in very low lighting - then too dim. Hopefully software update will fix this up.

also agree! Way to dim in dark room, haven't noticed to bright yet but then I am old and need the extra ummpphhh to see!!! lol
It would be nice if LG could add low and high limits to the auto-brightness.. I think that would fix the problem.
Does everyone use auto-brightness? Does it seem to help with battery life?

So the issue occurs since April and hasn't been fixed yet. I just received my G5 and have the same issue. It annoys me a lot and when I see that LG didn't fix it yet, I am wondering whether they ever will do that.

I have noticed it getting stuck, unchecking it and checking it again sorts it out for a while

Does auto-brightness totally suck? is it just me?

In a completely dark room, auto-brightness will sometimes randomly bump up the brightness level of the screen to, say, 25% (way too bright). In a dimly lit room, it generally stays pinned to minimum unless i move it up manually before turning auto-brightness on (way too dark).
Changes take a long time and are inconsistent. Anyone else experience this?
Never been a fan of auto-brightness. It depends on the light sensor in the device, but I turn this off on most android devices as it just ends up soaking up power anyway.

I have noticed that as well. Specifically the in a almost completely dark room its not set at minimum brightness, and when in a dimly lit room it will be at minimum brightness.
Oddly enough when in the completely dark room if I turn off auto brightness then put it back on it will usually go down to minimum brightness. This lasts for awhile then it seems to bump back up.
mine does this also..
I do recall nearly every reviewer of the Prime saying that the auto-brightness was pretty wonky.
But with that being said, auto brightness seems rather unnecessary on pretty much any Android device. Even Froyo had native brightness widgets.

Ditto here, you will find auto turned off on all my devices. Never seems to work for me correctly.
Same here on my 64gb model on .33 version. Also posted here ...

Can heavily be noticed in mobilephonetalk forums while scrolling the page with auto bright turned off. Even on max or min brightness....
It sucks. Plain & Simple
I do wonder why they have such a hard time making Auto Brightness / Sensors that work correctly. Or at least consistantly. I used to play with it, setting the brightness level, then going to auto on several HTC devices, and while it was a LOT better than the Primes setup, it wasn't consistent which always caused me to give up on it. Seems a waste to even put the sensor in there when no one seems to be able to control it properly.
Maybe it IS an Android thing, for I remember no such issue with Windows Mobile devices. Hmm. Hold out any hope of ICS? Perhaps it will address it, but for now, I am still skeptical that ICS is the Holy Grail everyone claims it to be. It would have to address a LOT to be anywhere near that perfect. Who knows. Maybe it IS that good, in which case, My Prime is really gonna shine!
I don't like it on my HTC Sensation either. Too much dimmed when outside and in bright rooms.
Does anyone have a device with ICS that can confirm if auto brightness still acts the same? Every Android device I have had has the same issue. I have just learned to deal with it although I do not like it.

Yep HTC sensation is the same..
I find it very good on my Sensation, suits me well. But in the Prime its well too low.
Sent throught the wormhole from my CoinInserted Sensation OG.
it's ok. not perfect
I also never use auto backlight, but on the TFP it seems ok.
It's not perfect but it almost always reacts pretty fast to changes in light.
When I'm in a dark room it always goes to the lowest setting.
Sometimes it seems to 'forget' to work and then I need to turn the auto setting off and then back on again and that seems to remind it to go back to work.

Anyone noticing screen flicker?

Not only do I have light bleed but I'm also seeing screen flicker. I really want to keep this device but I'm getting sick of this...
The first thing I noticed when I turned on the device was the light bleed. Its pretty bad, and I normally don't mind those types of things. No flicker here though.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
I noticed if I turn up the brightness it goes away.
I don't have light bleed, but I do see flicker if the screen brightness is turned down. It's reminiscent of the original Nexus 7, which had the exact same problem.
I have the flickering too...really annoying. I was hoping that this would replace my iPad but it's not looking good. Although lollipop is pretty amazing so far.
Does it only happen you adjust the brightness? If so, i dont think its a big deal as long as it doesnt happen during actual usage.
I noticed the flicker issue when I first was using it. I then turned off auto brightness from the main settings and started using Lux Auto Brightness and the issue has been resolved as far as I can see. I suspect this is an issue with the Lollipop build's brightness manager and not a hardware issue from the backlight. Also as far as bleed goes, there is apparent bleed when viewing the screen at an angle and looking directly at the edge, however I have found that it is a complete non issue in normal use (even in a fully dark room), which stands in stark contrast to my Nexus 10 which has noticeable edge bleed when viewed straight on.
No Flicking here
No flickering here either.
No flickering, but the auto brightness is very weird! It goes from extremely bright to extremely dark without me actually moving, same light conditions?
No flicker here!
Well, I guess we can all admit screen flicker is of the norm of Tegra.
Im seeing flikkering too.....
Only when brightness is low.
Remind me why Google/htc did not decide to use a 64 bit Qualcomm processor instead? :-\
Do you think that this issue can be solved via software update, or is this issue hardware related, and therefore cannot be fixed easily

considering that not everyone has it
So i say no
This issue seems to be related to auto brightness/adaptive brightness: The same brightness level set manually doesn't flicker.
Seems to be a software issue to me, and it seems highly likely every Nexus 9 flickers with auto brightness on (and at low relative brightness setting) in low light environments.

But, my screen flickers when I am on a constant brightness level. But, it doesn't show up as much when the screen is on at full brightness, just when the screen is at half brightness or just below half.

I guess we aren't experiencing the same issue, then: My screen only flickers with adaptive brightness enabled in low light conditions, seems like it is constantly readjusting the screen between two brightness values.
My Nexus 9 doesn't flicker at any constant brightness setting.
Yep, my Nexus 9 flickers as well.
About 15-20% brightness (fixed). It doesn't flicker all the time and it goes away if you change the brightness level or even by itself if you change the app you are using.
This leads me to believe this might be a software issue (N7/2013 had this too when it came out).

A possible fix for the Full (Auto) brightness issue !! :)

Well i am calling it a possible fix as i am still testing it. I am talking about the full brightness issue that many others are facing too. The issue was the brightness would still vary automatically depending on the ambient light even when the auto brightness was switched off. So when you are in a dark room even if you wanted you could not turn the brightness to 100%. Initially when i just bought the phone for few days i felt the screen looked a little less brighter compared to how it looked in the showroom, so when i searched for it found out that so many of them out there have the same issue. You can just test it by switching off the auto brightness and keeping the brightness to 100% in a dark room and when you project a flash light or some light source on the sensor next to the ear piece the screen would get brighter and when you take off that light the screen would again become a little dimmer. I for a second thought it could be some kind of feature as well. But what ever that was i dint like it as could not pump up the brightness in a dark room to its full capacity even if i wanted it. And thats such a shame for such a beautiful display.
So i first wanted to flash some custom ROMs and see if that makes any difference. First i flashed a custom rom from the S6E android development section but the issue still persisted and after a day's observation i again flashed a ROM today from the s-6--s-6-edge-unified-development thread and after flashing the ROM i went in to settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and switched it on, since then the brightness varied just once right after the colour adjustment was switched on but now i am continuously able to pop up the brightness to 100% even in the low light area and seems like the issue has been fixed !! I have been observing it for the last 3 to 4 hours.
So who ever has this issue can try this out and let me know if it worked. I would not say the ROM installation is a must, first try turning on the colour adjustment under settings-accessibility-vision-colour adjustment and if it doesnt work then try flashing the ROM and again doing the colour adjustment and let me know if it worked for you !! But after what ever changes you make do a reboot and give it an hour or so.
EDIT : As i was still testing it unfortunately the bug showed up again so i finally decided to flash an S6 ROM ( Not S6 edge) on to my S6E and to my surprise the issue was solved !! Now i can confirm that its just a software bug and hopefully samsung will fix it !! If any one wants to try flashing a flat S6 ROM let me know i will leave a link here with the kernel to be flashed. Hopefully this helped !!
I will test it..thanks for this
Can somebody confirm this as a possible solution to the bug?

Must be a feature then, or some other reason Sammy did this.
On a side note, why worry about this? It's not a practical issue, is it?

I'm surprise so many people still recommend Lux app when it is useless for this issue. The issue is that the phone always has some autobrightness turned on even when we set it to be off. Even when you set Max brightness in Lux app, it's still only Max what the phone will do without Lux. Therefore, for those that want super bright all the time, Lux is useless.

Let's say that it is a really annoying issue in darken places because the brightness is too low. Try to compare the s6 edge with any other phone (s6 flat for example) and you will see how the issue is annoying! It is surely not a feature because the s6 flat doesn't do that. Moreover samsung admitted it is an issue (I have spoken with them several times), the funny thing is that after 2 months it is not solved yet.

What? That's not the problem OP is talking about? Brightness too low in dark places? No one has this problem, and if they did, a 3rd party app like lux would have fixed the issue.
Lux does not fix the issue. Many tried. I tried. I set Max brightness using Lux and its not as bright as it could be. You could try for yourself, turn off auto brightness, manually set Max brightness in both settings and Lux, go to a dark place and shine a flashlight on the light sensor. Screen will become brighter.
Then you'll understand that Max brightness does not work with setting and with Lux. Then you'll be enlightened... but then you can also choose not to try this and go on with your life as ignorance is bliss. When something doesn't work, most people call it a bug while some people choose to call it a feature

I thought the extra boost to brightness was a feature and helped battery?
Set to a certain maximum, on bright light situations (outside in sunlight, maglight on sensor) the display will boost to an unnatural brightness to aid visibility. On return to inside light levels the phone returns to normal.

It's not a feature its a bug. Every s6 edge has this issue . Maybe not everyone realized as you for example but it's for all s6 edge.
You can see it clearly comparing in a dark place a s6 flat and a s6 edge. The flat is way brighter than the edge so this is clearly a bug

Impractical? I always thought being able to control my screens brightness was fairly practical!
Surely the point of manual brightness is to be able to control it manually?

I also think this is more of a "feature" then a bug.
It originally was a bug before the maintenance update because the screen would not dim to 50% brightness before timing out completely. Unless the screen was in the (what im calling) super bright mode.
Since the maintenance update the screen will now dim to 50% before timing out altogether.
But we still see the screen go into super bright mode in very well lit areas (ie direct sun) When i look at the screen in this mode though i notice the colors dont look real. Which leads me to believe that this is more of a feature to ramp up the screens brightness when you are in situations that might make the screen hard to see (ie direct sunlight)

ONEPLUS 7T PRO - auto brightness issue

hey guys.
i want to purchase the OnePlus 7T Pro, and i've read that there are problems with the auto brightness.
are there realy problems in the 7T pro model?
were they fixed in the last update?
how bad are they?
i must say that auto brightness issues can be a deal breaker for me
The Auto brightness is quite bad. The screen goes really dull and dim in certain light conditions and one has to manually override it. This isn't a deal breaker, but a big irritant for sure.
Have got 2 updates on my 7T Pro and this hasn't been fixed yet. I don't think this is high priority for OnePlus as there are various other software issues to take care of.
Sent from my HD1911 using Tapatalk
Well... yes, it's annoying. But keep in mind it is a new device and it's a new version of Android with massive changes under the hood.
Older versions also had brightness issues and these got fixed over time. It's a nice device, I use it as my daily driver and it's good. Not perfect. But hey... the hardware is ok, so the rest can be fixed in software.
Generally the auto-brightness and adjustment are responsive and work okay. However there are some scenarios in which it doesn't work so well (dimly lit rooms with ambient light coming from lamps or monitors seems to be the worst case). If you are using dark mode (theme) it also makes the screen harder to read in said scenarios. Also if you have enabled the blue light filter (Night Mode) make sure that the brightness slider is moved to the brightest setting (although even completely disabling Night Mode doesn't solve the issue).
OnePlus were probably more conservative with the brightness levels to save power as well. It's not bad enough to be a deal breaker (I use only auto-brightness as well) but it is a bit annoying and hopefully it gets fixed in a future update (or even better yet, we get an option for different brightness profiles). Honestly, you do get used to it over time but you also kinda lose on the display quality when the brightness is low. You really start noticing it after you increase it manually a bit.
I would probably set my brightness +10% or +20% from the stock auto levels.. I haven't been able to find a way to do this with an adb tweak yet. Make sure the email OnePlus to let them know about the issue.

Question [Bug Tracking] Official Android 13 Update - Worth installing? Major issues? Feedback welcome!

Hi, I just got the notification that the Android 13 update is ready for my phone. But I'm not really sure if it's worth to go through with the update. I wouldn't want to wait another 6 months for stupid fixes needed. If anyone was brave enough to install it let me know how your experience has been so far. Thanks!
CONFIRMED BUGS FOUND BY USERS AFTER THE UPDATE:
Screen flickering when using auto refresh rate. The screen quickly changes between 120hz and lower causing flickering especially on darker tones (from grey to black). This is almost certain to happen, be ready if you choose to go through with the update!
Increased contrast. Screen constrast has been increased requiring increased brightness for outdoor visibility. Poor viewing performance in bright day light and overall darker hues at lower brightness levels
Charging issues. Phones are not charging correctly when turned on, constantly disconnecting. Charging when the phone is off is the only solution. Wireless charging is also affected and unusable due to overheating that stops the phone from chaeging
Moto Secure folder locked. Moto Secure folders cause the phone to crash and can't be unlocked anymore. Do not use Moto Secure folders to avoid data loss!
Ready For broken. If you try to connect your smartphone to the TV no output is displayed
HDR video playback is broken. When trying to play back HDR video from any app it shows as SDR. No brightness increase as it was in Android 12.
POSSIBLE ISSUES:
Overall performance degradation. Some users are experiencing slow downs and an increased heat output from the device
Audio playback not working. Some users are reporting audio not working after boot. Startup sound works as usual
Increased battery consumption
Connectivity issues might appear during calls or mobile data usage. Reports are not clear about specific conditions in which these issue appears
Screen flashes white when waking the device through the fingerprint reader
Fingerprint reader breaks and might show up as not working in the built in diagnostic software
MISSING FEATURES AFTER THE UPDATE:
Dolby app lost the custom EQ setting
WORKAROUNDS:
A device reset might get rid of most of the issues, beside the flashing screen when using auto refresh rate
To fix the auto refresh rate it is possible to lower the maximum refresh rate from 120Hz to 90Hz. Thanks to @mansell68 for posting it in the thread. Download the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=by4a.setedit22 and change the parameter "peak_refresh_value" to 90. This will solve the issue for now and let the phone switch between 60 and 90Hz correctly.

I update my edge about 2 days ago and this is the only issue that i found with, just like says on Lenovo's forums I set the refresh rate on 60hz for the moment until we get an update.
@giacomowrc thank you very much for reporting this issue! I knew there would be something wrong with the update. Motorola just doesn't care anymore.
@iOrizon thank you a lot too for reporting back on the issue. So there's no amount of resetting it to factory that would fix this issue?
@MeltingSnowman tbh this issue doesn't affect me so much so I prefer to wait for a fix instead of reset my phone. There is no a mayor issue that force me to do that, for me at least, and in general I think that is a solid update.
I update it yesterday.
Everything is perfect, no issues, 144hz and automatic refresh working.
Very Stanley and fluid.
With all turner on on the night ONLY consumes 6% of battery on 12 hours.
Great job from Motorola.
Waiting for official a13 update.
@giacomowrc @iOrizon @almmpt you might be having two different releases? The one is asking me to update to is T1SH33.35-23-20. Also I think I got one of the first batch of units since I got it soon after launch. So I might be more affected in case they different hardware revisions that act differently depending on the software.
Also 6% on a 12h night is a bit much to be honest. I wish they addressed the incorrect scheduling that kills this phone's battery but doesn't seem to be the case.

The wifi and bluetooth pairing with the smartwatch might explain the battery drain, makes sense.

I updated a couple of days ago. I feel like the battery drain increased, but maybe it'll bounce back? I definitely like the split data/wifi buttons in the notification - I like turning off unneeded services.
I loved the side bar in 12 and it's still great, but I definitely don't see a reason to give it a permanent on-screen indicator in 13 (the half-transparent bar near the power button). It makes a visual mess if I'm using something that has a scroll bar. Let us turn it off...

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I was concerned that they would make a mess of it and it happens to be the case, adding to the screen flickering an increased battery drain.
So there's no option to disable the indicator and keep the double tap on the power button to make that side bar appear? What a bummer...
P.S. if you don't mind me asking you have no screen flickering right? Did you get an early batch of the phone or a later one? I'm trying to figure out if they changed hardware revisions for the display and that's causing the flickering. Also any weird colour shifts appearing at night? Like having a darker tint at low/lowest brightness settings?
