[HELP] Unable to install apps from ".apk" files
Edit: My phone is running AOSParadox.
This is what happened. I hope you read this fully.
(But still, you can skip to point no 5 , if this? looks long/big ? And if you want to know the "actual" problem, skip to point no 10.)
1)I downloaded new "phone" app apk and installed.
2)new app got installed as a separate app as a result of which there were 2 'phone' apps (one of which is a system app)
3)To make the newer 'phone' app as system app, I deleted the older one(yes, I had rooted the ROM) , and using ES file explorer, I copied the newer 'phone' apk to /system/priv-app & changed the permission to rw- r-- r-- . Rebooted.
4)After this, I could make phone calls...BUT, after dialing a number, the dialer interface ( the screen where the controls like disconnecting a call, loud speaker toggle, mute toggle exist) was simply not appearing. Hence, I could not do anything but listen to the calls that I dial.
5)So, I uninstalled this app, and reflashed the whole ROM and rebooted to system.
6)'Google play service stopped' kept on popping up. So,flashed open gapps nano.
7)now, 'setup wizard stopped' started to pop up.
8)Hence I deleted setupwizard.apk from /system/priv-app in twrp file manager & rebooted, And the pop up stopped.
9) But, many other app crashing messages started to pop up.( like Google+, Google play games, messenger(Google) ie, all the 'Google' apps that are NOT part of Gapps).So, I wiped ONLY system and flashed the ROM and Gapps. After this also, 'setup wizard stopped' started to pop up. So, I repeated step 8.
10) Now, I cannot install ANY "apk". If I try to install , it says that there is "parsing error". But, I can install an app if I download it DIRECTLY from play store.
Help me to install the '.apk' file.
Edit: do NOT suggest me to perform a full wipe/clean install of the ROM. please.

try this, take a nandroid of only your data partition (without compression) , change your file systems on /data & /cache (if its ext4, then okay, but if its f2fs then change to ext4) , the do a clean flash, boot into the rom, then reboot back to recovery, wipe ONLY DATA and restore the nandroid backup, wipe cache & dalvik and reboot.

About fixing the title, how can I do it?

In the OP , I have written not to suggest a clean install/full wipe(which you still did), because, I want to know what is that I did wrong in the process.

best i can say is that you tried messing around symlinked system apps, the gapps problem confirms that, maybe Googlepackage installer got screwed up, try installing gapps again without any wipes, if that doesnt work, maybe a full wipe is the only option.

I re-flashed the Gapps without wiping anything. After booting into the system, after unlocking, 'unfortunately setup wizard has stopped working ' kept on popping up.
Why?
Anyway, I think I have to do clean install. Just curious about what's happening.

So, I'm kinda new at this, as I was told by the forums when trying to post this question in the official gsb thread
I got an eris a few weeks ago for free, and its my first android device. I used it for a while, then rooted it and installed GSB.v2.0-CM7.0.0_RC2_STABLE
I've got it all customized and got some cool apps installed and am loving it. My question is, can I just go into recovery and install GSB.v2.6-CM7.0.0_RC4_STABLE and be good to go, or do I have to back up all my apps and settings and start fresh? I have most of my apps moved to sd. Will they be okay? Also, I went into system and changed my bootscreen, lock and unlock sounds, and added a boot script. I will have to back those up and redo them if anything, right?

You will lose your bootscreen during any ROM flash, plus whatever your boot script is I assume it's somewhere where it would get lost, too.
This may not work for your apps and system settings, but it's safe to try, then you'll know for sure if it'll work.
1. Go to your recovery and create a Nandroid backup of everything just the way it is.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache ONLY, do NOT Factory Reset/Wipe Data.
3. Flash GSB v2.6 and immediately after flash the GAPPs package, just like before.
4. If you had flashed the Cache2Cache script before you have to do that again as well, right after flashing the GAPPs.
5. Reboot and test everything to see if everything works to your satisfaction.
If it's doesn't then you have the Nandroid backup that you can restore. I can provide instructions that I use, and at least one other person has recently used and reported good about which uses Titanium Backup, but you'd really probably want to buy it off the market for it to be easier to do Batch backups and Restores (choose Menu/Batch from TB's main screen).
1. First, make sure the option is checked in TB's preferences to "Force to same location". FYI I do NOT use the checkbox for "Migrate system data". At THIS time (you can change it later), I suggest changing the Compression method to No Compression. This'll make sense in step 6.
2. From Menu/Batch, choose "Backup all user apps + system data".
3. Boot into recovery, do a COMPLETE wipe (Factory Reset/Data/Dalvik cache), flash your ROM and then your GAPPs (it's recommended at this time to NOT flash C2C just yet).
4. Reboot, SKIP setup of your Google account, go into Preferences/CyanogenMod settings/Application and check the box for "Allow application moving". I also change "Install location" to External, but that's up to you; this is just what works for me.
5. Boot back into recovery and flash C2C and reboot the ROM again.
6. Use File Manager, which comes with GSB and navigate to the TitaniumBackup folder (not TitaniumBackup-system). Find the Titanium Backup apk app installer file and reinstall it from here.
7. In TB, under Menu/Batch, choose "Restore all apps with data".
After this is done, reboot. If this works for you and you want to do this again in the future, you can make a copy of the Titanium Backup apk file to some other folder, that way you can re-enable compression in TB's preferences for future backups. I recommend LZ0.
I've been using this second method for the last 3-4 new versions of GSB, don't know how it would work with such a big jump in versions. If neither of these work for you, let me know if you still need help.
You will lose your bootanimation and any scripts you have but your apps will be fine. Like WRT said above just make sure you do a nandroid back up in recovery then wipe cache only. Once that's done flash 2.6 and gapps. Enjoy!

Awesome. I had done a nandroid and ti backup to prepare, but I never saw the option in ti for force same location. I know how to backup and reinstall my lockscreen sounds and bootani, so I've got that down. Now that I look there's a 2.7 release which integrates the sdcard speed fix, so I won't need my init script now

Hello, I'm running RR 2.6.1 with Dorimanx's latest kernel and I've run into a huge problem.
I'm not sure what the trigger is but I think it could be updating the SuperSU app, or it could just be that I'm super unlucky. In any case, I really really hope someone will be able to help me here.
I was facing random freezes and SODs on the kernel but I was in the midst of tweaking my settings to see if I could fix it. I updated the SuperSU app on the bus on the way home, went home & tried to power my phone on but it wouldn't work so I force-restarted by holding down the power button. When it rebooted, I had all sorts of FCs so I went to CWM Recovery & cleared cache & dalvik & fixed permissions. Nothing worked. Here's what I've tried so far:
- reflashing the kernel
- reflashing the ROM
- re-rooting via Odin
- flashing another kernel (I tried fluxi but it was stuck at the animation screen & wouldn't boot)
- Googled for how to fix process.acore and Gapps FCs, tried to clear all the Google-related apps' data but they wouldn't clear
- trying to delete the apparent offending files from /data/data/... via adb and Android Explorer but it didn't work, kept saying it was read-only or something, even though I followed all the instructions to SU and mount as RW
By this time, exTweaks didn't recognise the kernel as compatible, Whatsapp and TB FC'd, just about everything FC'd.
I went into CWM Recovery to try and make a Nandroid but it said "Error while making a backup of /data".
I am truly at my wits' end. My phone wouldn't even let me access it after the right passcode was input. At this point, I just want to go in and backup my Whatsapp and relevant TB apps.
Please, if anyone is able to help me, PM me or something. I'm on Skype if you're so kind as to be willing to walk me through anything you think may help.

Flash a clean ROM, wipe cache and dalvik, do a factory reset and start from scratch.
Multiple fc can be caused due to several reasons like:
-wrong phone.apk
-wrong framework
-wrong ROM
-too much undervolt
Sorry for telling but my first sentence might be your fastest approach.

Try the following:
-Download this: Ultimate kernel cleaning script
-Reboot to CWM recovery
-Flash Ultimate kernel cleaning script
-Under kernel specific option, Reset extweaks settings
-format /system (under Mount and storage)
-Flash ROM (RR 2.61)
-Flash Gapps
-wipe cache partion
-wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
-fix permissions (under advanced)
-Reboot your phone
My above steps will not wipe your and should definitely fix your problem

Unfortunately, I didn't get to try them but I'll definitely be checking this again if (touch wood) this happens again. Hopefully it'll be useful to someone else facing similar issues, I know I couldn't find clear answers on what to do.
@jokesy If the /data partition is somehow stuck at read-only, I'm not sure formatting /system will help. I could be wrong, I apologise if I sound ungrateful ('cause I do appreciate your help) but wouldn't reflashing a ROM kind of overwrite the existing /system files already?
I'm not aware of the details and technicalities of what exactly happens during a ROM flash but according to the AROMA installer, it seems like /system is wiped first.
What I did
Gave up on backing up apps & WhatsApp through the normal ways, most of my TB apps are backed up daily anyway, just lost some data like that for Sleepbot.
Pulled WhatsApp database files from /data/data/com.whatsapp via ADB, restored the previous day's Nandroid backup & copied the database files to the relevant directory. I guess it may seem minor, but as everything was melting down on my phone, I kept getting messages from friends about project work in school & other stuff that I couldn't read so I really wanted to not lose all the new messages that had come in.
Restoring my Nandroid (thank God I backup daily) fixed everything, fortunately, but there are little quirks I'm still ironing out. Eg. My Godville app can't seem to connect to the main server & retrieve details of my character despite clearing data, uninstalling & reinstalling. Not too sure why.. :/

Ididn't know you were using aroma installer though, but formatting /system has nothing to ago with /data sms vice versa
Following my wouldn't have hurt though, ur would only ensure a clean system partition before install.

Tough luck man. I don't know why the data corrupts spontaneously, it happened once to me when I was playing Plague, everything started FC-ing all of a sudden while I was in-game. Bizarre. Didn't want to do a full wipe so I just restored the /data partition from my latest Nandroid.

Something strange happened to my S3 after a simple reboot I noticed that some app have been removed so I decided to clean my phone on the way.
I made a full wipe + everything you can think of to clean, delete, format the phone but after I install the rom I can still see my apps in the application manager and I can't get rid of them even if I uninstall them through the application manager the come back after a restart.
I tried 2 different roms but it happens on both of them, both are xxDLIB .
How to fix that?

Try the SuperWipe from "Android Revolution HD" here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334
Be careful, this will erase everything that is not on your external SD-card. Read the instruction first.

Are the apps system apps perchance? A wipe of data WILL wipe all user installed apps, the full wipe script alluded to doesn't do anything that you can't do manually from recovery.

Sure the apps aren't part of the ROM. Depends on what the dev has cooked into it.
Sure you're doing a full wipe vs wiping caches only.
Could also be syncing to your Google account meaning when you launch play store it automatically detects your market links and reinstalls previously installed apps

I think I didn't explained my self right, these apps are "user" apps downloaded from Play store.
things I did before installing the rom:
1. factory reset from setting.
from cwm:
2. wipe data/factory reset
3. wipe cache partition
4. wipe dalvik-cache
5. wipe battery stats
5. format /cache
/system
/data
/preload
/sdcard
* also I removed the external sd.
but still I have these app "ghosts"
Then i suggest as per previous replies to the same question you are auto downloading from Google play after installing a rom .

I disabled wifi/data and sync when it ask for a wifi connection (at the openning screen of the new rom) so there is no way it somehow sync with play store.

I tried Omega, HyperGalaxy and WanamLite
Could possibly be a problem with your CWM installation or any dependencies such as ?busybox
Ok so I installed Samsung 4.1.1 stock rom and reinstalled CWM and afterwards install Omega rom and it worked!!!
Clean Rom Install
Many people don't exactly know what a Data Wipe / Factory reset is. NO it does not delete "all" your data on Internal SD-Card. It Deletes all you user data and settings and stuff, like it says it formats "system". For Example if you Full wipe you loose Whatsapp, but the Whatsapp folder on your internal SD-Card remains untouched, that means you can restore your Conversations with ease. This means you can cause a huge mess on your internal SD-Card over time. This is my way how to do a CLEAN install. Doing this prevents many unwanted issues like Bootloops, FC's and all those other nasty laggy ****.
1. Put new rom on EXTERNAL SD Card (if slot available)
2. Data Wipe / Factory Reset
3. Wipe Cache
4. Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Format Internal SD card
6. Install Rom and enjoy
Keeping your personal Data on your external SD-Card is a good idea (pics, music, vids , docs ...)
[You can do this even if you don't have an ext. SD-Slot. After "cleaning" your device mount USB-Storage in CWM Recoery and you can connect to pc and pull over your rom. ]
And this is probably one of the best ways to do a clean install without aditional Scripts like superwipe or other "flashy" stuff. (DO NOT USE THOSE SCRIPTS UNLESS THEY ARE IN AN INSTALLATION GUIDE)
One addition to above format/preload as well .

After I root my galaxy s3, I installed titanium backup and freeze some of the Samsung apps. But somehow whenever I reboot I get error message "sorry, settings has stopped". Well after that everything is normal, but sometimes when I switch between wifi and data network (using go switch) this message also shows up. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Thanks!
Go back, unfreeze everything in titanium then boot into recovery. Clear dalvik, cache and fix pemissions.
Thank you! I did what you told me to, unfrost everything in TB, reboot into ClockworkMod recovery, clear Dalvik Cache and fix permissions (I didn't find the option of clear cache, only the option "clear cache partition", not sure if that's the one I want). But the problem still exists...
I also found out every time I turn on/off GPS, the error message comes out...

have you delete the apps in the system?
Yes I uninstall all the apps that possibly cause the problem. Go launcher, go switch, superSU, andorid task manager, titanium backup,... Still the problem exists. It's not a big problem because the error message just shows up and after I click "OK" everything backs to normal. But I still want to solve the problem so I clean up the data and do a factory reset and then reinstall the original firmware. Finanlly the error message problem goes away, now I need to root the phone again and try to install the apps carefully...

Hey Guys,
first off: I google this before and my own work arounds did not yield any success. So here we go:
Originally I froze the Cyanogenmod Setup Wizard, as it constantly "stoppped working" after booting as I reinstalled a previously working version of (open) Gapps. Well, it still dit not work and the Setup Wizard kept quitting on boot.
Hence I did a nandroid backup with TWRP and completely formatted my internal storage - reinstalled everything from TWRP and tried to restore my "data" backup from TWRP. But what happens then is that CM13 goes into bootloop (I see the booting animation 90% of the time, sometimes it goes into "optimizing app..." mode, only to reboot immediately after finishing the optimization).
I assume this problem occures because I froze the Setup Wizard in the backup, which is required for initializing the system after restoring?
What I've tried so far:
reinstalling/restoring/wiping the different partitions in all possible orders
if I reinstall everything without the backup (includes DATA only!) CM13 boots up just fine, but without my user data, settings etc..
Thus I tried to unfreeze the setup wizard, but a) via ADB does not work (device always offline or cannot connect in bootloop/recovery mode), b) there is no "packages-stoped.xml" in my /system folder of the backup for the package manager (hence i cannot change the disabled/enabled value of com.cyanogenmod.setupwizard), c) replacing the /system folder of my data-backup with an older version: this worked but all my settings were completely gone.
Finally I even tried to delete the package.xml and package.list in the /data/system folder (assuming the freez-value is stored there) and it would be rebuild. However, this did not help.
So I do know by now, that the bootloop problem resides within the /data/system folder of my backup. However, I cannot narrow it more down. Does anyone have more ideas how I might restore from the backup without running into a boot loop?

I've narrowed it down to the /data/system/users folder. I've found the package-restrictions.xml there. But this is apparently not the one file responsible for the bootloop (exchanged it a working backup). Sadly, all my settings are in there as well
does anyone know how to solve this issue? I can exclude the frozen state or other restrictiond (xprivacy) as causes for the crash of setup wizard. However, this leaves me clueless as to the reasons of the crashs.
Atm. I have to run android without the play google framework (gapps pico) in ordee to circumevent this issue.
p.s. I used open gapps. Flashing differen gapps packages made not difference. And Open Gapps worked before... (as many poeple seem to have problems caused by the gapps package)
