On my T-Mobile h901, about a month ago I started noticing transparent images being left on screen from apps I use and from a notification bar. What I mean is for example when I use instagram then go to main screen, I can see transparent images of it on dark/grey colors. It kinda hard to see with a photo but it's is very obvious when looking at it. So I set blank grey image on screen to show you an example.

It is not just in some part of a screen, sometimes it's all over it. Can someone tell me what kind of problem is this and can I fix it? Or is this manufacturer defect?

I had this same issue. I cant say it was the cause but it started after I upgraded to Marshmallow which was when it became it available. I was stock MM. I reset the phone a couple of times but it always came back. I did a warranty swap.
Its called Image burn, when an image/icon stays on for a lengthy period of time, it causes a burn effect into the lcd screen. This use to be common for plasma tvs and older lcd tvs. To prevent this from happening, the image/icon has to change ie exit the app, open another app, turn off screen. Also the brighter the display, the quicker this burn effect takes place. I use lux lite to auto change my brightness settings and I set my display to turn off after 2 minutes.
The other day my phone was powered off but plugged in. I could see the google plus web page I had been on behind the large battery charging symbol.
Yesterday I have same problem on mine v10..any suggestions?

Yes but this is not how it works. I had same problem with my g4 and sent it to service and they replace the screen.
After that never again burn in appeared.

This is not image burn, or else the icons in the notification bar would be permanent. I get it too a lot, but the icons that are there change a lot. They disappear on their own. Not sure why or what the cause is.
I noticed this image retention issue a few days ago and observed that the G4 also has this issue with similar effect. I believe that LG's Quantum Display technology is the cause of this, considering the high contrast ratio and brighter brightness levels that it offers compared to regular LCD. Pretty much all LCD's are affected by image retention but I've only owned my V10 for around 4 months so I don't see how this could be happening so relatively soon besides the V10's and G4's amazing display being the Achilles's heel of both phones. I considered the fact that heat could be causing the issue for me since I live in Texas where it's almost always hot in the summer but I haven't tested yet to see if retention occurs in a cold environment.
For anyone else perusing this thread for this issue, best way to check for it is looking at the top area of your phone and pulling down the notification shade due to its grey hue. Downloading or making your own image with a pure grey background and viewing it in the gallery is a better method since the navbar buttons can be affected as well. Normally retention wouldn't be a problem beyond those areas if it wasn't for the fact that the entire screen is also affected by retention, simply reinforcing my previous statement about Quantum Display so look out for that too, especially in apps with constant UI elements and bright contrasting colors such as Hangouts, Google+, Snapchat, etc.
Best method of fixing this at the moment is replacing the display which warrants a $100+ purchase if you don't want to deal with removing the old LCD and gluing the new one in and that's assuming you can find a good display provider for the V10 with the same color bumpers as your V10, getting your phone replaced by your carrier or phone insurance provider if applicable or simply, moving on to a new phone. You can otherwise deal with the issue though it's pretty sad considering the V10 is the 1st phone I've had with the shortest lifetime behind it before I noticed flaws which were screen related.
I'll be checking on this issue with my own V10 throughout the coming days and months to see if the problem escalates any further beyond what we can all see already or not. Fingers crossed. :fingers-crossed:
EDIT 1(?): the retention in my case occurs along the status bar and navbar w/buttons pretty quickly, even at the lowest brightness and certain apps like Skype or Hangouts make retention more apparent, especially when you're watching a YouTube video with plenty of dark elements. In enough cases, the entire screen is ghosted, elements of previously used apps and even the keyboard visible in certain conditions. It doesn't really become noticeable in low light at the lowest setting but is a bit easy to spot with my normal brightness levels at 30-40% in dark colors. The ghosted images go away relatively quickly though only when the screen is off or screen is subjected to fullscreen activity like a game: white background 'washing' will take a bit longer and sometimes not work and image retention fading seems to take longer when the phone is charging.
Turn your brightness all the way up and use this on your phone whenever you have image retention. Best thing to do is leave it on overnight.

Turning the screen off is a more effective fix than the method you've given, and I've already tried this beforehand to no avail. Thanks anyways though.

This is beginning to happen on my device. I run full bright (personal preference), but I have some serious ghosting, every now and then
I've had the same. It goes away on it's own. Normally affected me when I was on full brightness and switched to auto or phone fully died and plugged in the charger.
On LCDs it's not as aggressive to burn in forever like a plasma or AMOLEDs. Shut the phone off for a few minutes or use a flicking app that cycles through colors for a minute or two. I have one of those burn in apps and rarely use it because it tends to go away.
I had the same issue... had to replace the phone. It's a known issue. T-mobile will replace it for free.

I had to exchange my v10 for a bad Mic. Anyway my first v10 did retain images. You could only see it when on a Grey screen, and of course it went away after the screen was off for a few minutes. Anyway, I've had the replacement for a couple months now and there is no image retention at all.

it goes away on its own, but there's a app called screen burn fixer and it can't be setup by timer and it works like a charm
So is the phone eligible for screen replacement under warranty for such image retention even if it disappears after some time . I asked the service guy. He said its normal.
I'm also seeing this effect but only in the soft keys area. There are ghost images of soft keys, noticeable only of course when the soft keys are hidden (e.g playing video in mx player with soft keys hide option, etc.) The problem goes away when the screen is turned off for a few minutes. I think it's normal as I have seen this issue in G4 and Note 4 as well.

As you can see here the right picture has slightly "harder" colours. But it seems like the left had more contrast. The yellow lines stay yellow on the left one, on the right it's orange allready.
Left one clearly blue ish shine.
Now as I hold my own phone in the same positions as the picture standpoints, i can see mine is also like the blue-ish one with whole white screens.
Can anybody check this on their phone, as I now am worrying wich one is the one Samsung intended it to be?
Also a little other question, does this "automatic screenpower adapting" also changes the whites more to grey on your phones? When i turned it off it changed alot.
I've also seen those pics on Tweakers and checked my screen but I don't see any blueish hue on my screen. However it's hard to check because I don't know how the "other" screen looks like in real life.
Most people won't be able to notice the blue-ish hint on their screens without having another non blueish screen for reference. But I've had 4 Galaxy S2's pass through my ownership, and all of them have this blue-ish tint.

Yeah i know, wouldn't have noticed it myself. But just by comparing my phone to the blue ish one, i could see mine was like the blue ish one immediatly.
The other one has more of the pink hue like more of the lcd screens is guess...
What causses the difference, is it just some little layer?
Do you think we can talk abouth one of them being broken?

I can tell you that, in real life, mine looks like like the blue-ish one from those angles. However when i look straight on to the phone it's not like that, it's pretty white, like the 3rd picture but without the blue in the left corner.
It's taken with a good camera.
It's not broken. I'm convinced it's a software problem. The colour temperature is set incorrectly, it's too 'cold'.
If you load up a video in the stock video player app, then go into the settings menu, and make a mental note of the white colour of the menu, then go into colour tone, and set it to 'warm', notice the menu now has a much more neutral white and isn't as blue? Unfortunately the colour tone settings set in the video player isn't saved for else where on the phone.

Thanks, but doesn't change much. It's just a sort of coating. When i just turn it to idle, and i reflect in in outdoor light, I can see some sort off the same blue ish hue on it... You can test it like this...

Ah yeah I see.
Well my other theory is that due to the way AMOLED displays work, as we all know they die out over time, getting increasingly dull with age. But with AMOLEDs, blue pixels have a much shorter lifetime than the Red/Green pixels.
SO my theory is that either there is blue 'cast/coating' over the screen or that the blue pixels have simply much boosted 'intensity', so that over time as the blue pixels age quicker than the other pixels over time, this blue cast/coating/boosted intensity will mean that the blues will still match the other pixels as they age much slower.
Didn't Supercurio release a color fix in his Voodoo kernel for SGS ? I guess you'll need to wait for a similar fix for the SGS 2 series .

I tried that personally, changing it from Standard to Movie helped the problem a fair bit, but it's still there. Dynamic didn't seem to make much difference.
Hmm. Could it be a software problem? Have you tried reflashing it? Or maybe its the problem with the Gorilla Glass.

Hmm it seems the difference is there. My phone is with my friend and his phone is less brighter than mine. This maybe because he has used his phone while mine is new.

I hadn't heard about this but my SGS2 is definitely Blue-ish compared to a white screen on my laptop LCD :-(

Well I brought mine back to the store for a refund, it's just too annoying for me.
Especially when you put it to an angle. The screen of my galaxy s 1 is far superior in this respect

No news anymore.
But I am deffinatly sure that my blue tint is not coming from the screen. When i turn my screen off and reflect it in some light and play with it, i can clearly see that it still is blue...

Something I noticed a few weeks ago...
When I have my screen brightness set on the higher end, I see these green dots.
With the power and screen both on, and when the display is trying to show black, I am finding these green dots and specs.
The size of these dots are tiny, probably a pixel or two at most. They are clustered mostly in the inner 50% of the centre of the screen.I have not counted them but we are talking about a few hundred.
At first I thought it was dust or something under the glass, but noticed that with the screen off, it cannot be seen, and when the screen is white background, it cannot be seen either.
It is more noticeable when watching videos. If you crank up the brightness during a scene at night, let's say, it is almost unbearable.
Does anybody else suffer this?
Faulty pixels, you can get it exchanged.
I used the dead pixel app from Google play, where it flicks through many monotone color screens, one of them being black.
And as explained before, I see the green pixels on the pure black screen.
The strange thing is, the research I have done on dead pixels, hot pixels or stuck pixels tells me a different description to what i am seeing.
I see no problems at all during other color screens of the dead pixel test...only the black.
Do I have a uniquely malfunctioning unit, it are others or there?
If you have some spare time on your hands, could you try searching for dead pixel test in Google play and try it out?
No faulty pixels on mine. I think I've seen only one or two other similar reports.
But no matter if the pixels are dead, hot or stuck, it's hardware fault and I'm sure you can get your tablet replaced without a problem.

How about showing us ? - Just take a photo after placing a small piece of paper next to the spots - so your camera gets something for focusing on correctly.

Your screen also looks a bit distorted from looking at that playback bar. Yeah, you should just go ahead and get your tablet replaced, no hassle.
And wrap your image link between a
tag. Or just use the image button in the reply editor.
I noticed this problem too on my tablet but not to the same extent. Have you replaced yours?

Not yet, but I will. It has been a while since the original post, but I think it is getting worse. It has spread to a wider area. I contacted service center in Hong Kong and they told me that it should only take 3 hours to replace the lcd. So I will fly there nervy week and get it fixed.
Better to have it done while still under warranty..
I will report one done.

I sent mine in but they did nothing at the problem. They sent it back within two days claiming there is no problem and that they had updated firmware (which they could not have done since I did it before I sent it in lol...)
I called support again and they in return will call the repairshop asking what they actually did to my tablet. Most likely (if everything turns out ok) I will have to send it in again (which is still is annoying) and hopefully they will notice the problem this time.

Not to defend Sony in any way, but it can be difficult to spot the problem when the screen brightness is anything below 50%.
I notice my problems in the following scenarios.
1) when I boot up the tablet, first the Sony logo. Here you can see it a bit because the background is black. But it gets a lot worse when moving into the next screen during 'Xperia'. Here the brightness is turned up, making it extremely noticeable.
2) when I am trying to watch a movie outside or in a bright place making my screen reflect, forcing me to turn the brightness up above 70% mark...
3) when I am using my tablet in pitch dark... Even in low brightness setting it can be noticed. Especially bad when the movie scene I am watching is for example night time and thus naturally contains a lot of black on the screen.
Anyway, thanks for your info. Before I submit my tablet, I will make sure the recipient sees and understand the problem and get that person to attach a note to describe it for the repair crew.
Judging by the lack of response to this thread, we seem to have encountered a rare problem.

Yeah well I thought I was pretty clear on my instructions regarding how to notice the problem but you might be right. Mine isnt visible much when in use (apart from dark background with 100% brightness) and in dark enviroments.
Right now Im waiting for Sony Xperia support to call me telling me what the next step is. They wanted me to take a picture of them problem however its good to get a good print (picture is easy but printing it is harder ).
I have seen another thread regarding this at Sony Talk forum but that might be you aswell?

I flew into HK last night and went straight to Xperia care centre this morning.
I did not need to mention anything, I showed him the green dots (he called them dead pixels) and took it in immediately.
Judging by his reaction (his English was not very good) it was not the first time he had seen this on the Z2 tablet, and seemed to ask no further.
I showed receipt from purchase, he gave me a form to sign, and I was told to come back in 4 hours.
I came back after 4 hours, and everything was perfect.
I wasn't sure at the time, but it involves replacing the whole front display unit. The LCD screen and outer glass seem to be one piece, because everything was changed.
just a pain that the screen protector was gone with the old screen, so I needed to go and buy new, and that they had to factory reset... one click root and Titanium backup will come in handy...
All in all, my first ever Sony repair experience was professional, efficient and stress free.

I just happened to have a business trip to Hk coming up so I didn't need to send it in, but when I initially discovered the problem and called Sony Hk, they told me that sending it by registered mail or FedEx was an option.
The Chap on the phone told me to start an email correspondence with support team, who would then provide me with step by step instruction on how to send my tablet in.
For me at the time it was not an option, only because the receipt/proof of purchase was left in my office along with the box in Hk...
Since my tablet was repaired in 3 hours or so, if things go smoothly you might get your tablet back within the week (although it sucks that you have to pay courier 2-way)
Just wanted to say that the 2nd time I sent it for service they replaced the screen and now it looks ok!
I had to write a detailed description of the problem and I also added a printed picture which showed the dots, aswell as a link to an uploaded img. I guess that made them realize.
Lets hope it can stay like this now...
I just wanted to share about mine xperia z2 tablet.I had the same pixel problem, bought the tablet in abay Germany, got it to local service canter in Latvia. They got in touch with Sony and I got complete SWAP. For now it looks ok, I am usingthe new tablet for 2 weeks,lets see what will happen.

Took mine in today for screen and constant reboots got a text saying it would be completed within five days but not what they were going to do so fingers crossed

So, I've had my S6 Edge since launch and have recently noticed screen burn in / ghosting (whichever you prefer to call it) of the notification bar and, to a much lesser degree, the night clock.
It's not very obvious but definitely there. It's one of those things though, now I've spotted it once it's really obvious to me.
I've spoken to Samsung and my network provider (Three UK) and neither are interested despite the Three in store team agreeing it's a bad problem across both the S6 and S6 Edge range.
To be honest it's just another one of the many things making me regret ever choosing a Samsung, especially seeing how a colleague had a normal S6 replaced (free of charge) by Samsung as they acknowledged the burn in problem on the S6! Yet they won't replace an Edge as the problem, according to them, doesn't exist on it!
Anyone else found their S6 Edge burning in?

Had same problem with note edge. Dont use ur screen on full brightness or that stupid auto brightness function. If u use ur cell phone a lot during daytime and especially google maps or any other application that the design template is the same while using the app , full brightness set on full will burn ur screen and i can confirm it 10000%

That's bad man. I can't believe in this day and age we should be seeing screen burn on flagship handsets.

I thought the bottom half of screen was normal brightness until I had it next to a Galaxy S5 today and noticed the entire screen was a dull brownish - Yellow...the top half is the worst, and almost looks like nicotine stain. You can also see the notification bar burn in at the top

I have had my S6 Edge for about a year now and have always had the screen set to it brightest setting. I recently started seeing some burn-in and tried a bunch of different apps to clear it up. They all do pretty much the same thing which is flash a high-speed pattern of RGB colors to try to refresh the pixels. They helped a little, but then I found this free website which will do the same thing and IT WORKED! My screen is 99% better after running this.
1. Set your S6 screen to it's brightest setting
2. Plug it into it's charging cable
3. Visit: moodlight.org/#635 from your phone
4. Choose a bunch of really bright colors from it's color picker (or try bright white and black)
5. I left the default speed at 25 times per second
6. RUN IT in full screen in your phone's browser. I am using Chrome so it was easy to swipe the address bar out of the way for full screen.
This thing needs to run for as long as it takes. In my case some minor burn-ins were gone in about an hour, however it took a solid 5 hours to completely get rid of a very serious burn. That may sound excessive, but I am thrilled. I don't care it took so long. My beautiful S6 Edge screen is back to it's former glory.

Hi guys, I've had the screen burn on the top of my phone in the notification bar for a week and it's been doing my head in! I decided to change my theme to see if the change of colour on the notification bar would get rid of the burn and it has! I recommend changing your theme and seeing if it helps for you too! RGB pixel flashers don't work on AMOLED the same way they do on LCD. In the case of AMOLED they just help burn through the pixels' lifespan faster. In essence, all they do is "burn-in" the rest of the display more evenly so that now the entire display is more uniformly deteriorated.
AMOLED, to my knowledge, does not suffer from image retention (which is temporary) like LCD does. Image retention is unique to the liquid crystals in how they twist and untwist after the same voltage has been applied to them for an extended period or time. CRT, Plasma, and OLED suffer from permanent burn-in.
All in all, I would not recommend the procedure you had performed even if, in your case, it had a positive outcome. It could just as easily have had a negative one.

first thing i notice about the screen the notice the grainy part at low light. coming from a note 8 it was bothering me like hell the blue tint shifting but now i dont even notice it. i just enjoy the phone and think the screen looks great.

Never had this bluish tint on any phone before. Is there a setting for this? Im gonna wait for more replies to see if this is normal. I have 13 more days to return.
Mine has it but I don't find it to be extreme. I prefer the slight blue hue to some other devices that are slightly pink or yellow at an angle. I have to put my device at an angle I'd rarely (if ever) use to see the blue tint.

Actually is "normal".
All reviewers I read in my country (Italy) said something about blueshing whites with different angles, so I think that it's a common issue with the P-OLED technology ATM, so if it's a problem for you change phone and avoid the Pixel XL2 and the V30.

No, looking at your phone from an angle is not normal. Most people look at their phones head on.
Settings-Display-Screen Color. If it's on Normal you will see more blue hue. I changed mine to Photo and that reduced the blue significantly. There is a custom setting. Don't know if you tried this yet. If you did and still have an issue, then I don't know what to add...

i guess u never had an amoled screen phone. galaxy s6 and s7 suffer from color shifting but samsung has better quality control over their screen since only a few devices has this. LG probably didnt care much about this issue and my guess is that most v30 have this problem. is lg first attempt on oled screen since the flex serious but they really need to work on their panel issue. dont bother exchanging.l since u probably going to get anothe device with same or even worse color shifting. if u cant live with it and want an lg phone, wait for lg g7 and wait for review to pops up.
this issue does not bother me and i already own a s8, s8 plus and note 8. v30 screen might not be good compare to those but to me it still a beautifull screen
on the side note. lg gave us 2 year warranty. maybe a new batch a few month ahead fix this issue and we can do a warranty replacement

But I don't change the angle all the time while looking at the screen, so I don't notice it too much.
Also, whenever I don't have a uniform or white background, I hardly notice (although the tint is strong).
e.g. when holding looking from the bottom, which I do often (when it is laying in the table)

hardware limitation. Samsung's have it too just much less. i notice it sitting on a table also, so try to angle it right. aside from that it's a nice clean panel. it's 1 of only 2 complaints i have, this and no led. no big deal over here. nicer than my htc10 display, that's for sure. better phone, too.

Non-issue.
I look at my display straight on, when it's unlocked.
If I'm not actually holding my phone -- if it's on a table or on tilted Qi wireless charging pad -- then the display is LOCKED and the black & white "Always On Display" is showing me notifications. There's NO blue tint on AOD.
But if I'm holding my own phone and looking at it, reading emails, I couldn't care less about OTHER people not being able to read my screen due to some off-angle, slightly blueish tint. It's none of their business.
Maybe someone will yell at me, "Hey, tell LG to get rid of that off-angle blue tint so I can read YOUR emails better!"

I actually like that other people standing to the side probably can't read my emails or texts...
When my display is unlocked, I don't hold my phone sideways with the volume buttons pointing towards my eyes. So, I never see any blueish tint...

Agreed. It can be pretty severe but doesn't affect me at all as there's no need (for me at least) to look at such a small, handheld device from an angle. Would be an issue if it was a TV obviously. I guess some people might disagree if they need to look at their screen from an angle often for whatever reason, but if that's the case they should definitely go with another model.
Don't call a bug/quality issue a feature... that is just too lame. Of course Samsung has the issue, it tints red, but at a way lower rate. IPS is greater in many ways. Of course not in rich blacks.
Does anybody know if there are any display revisions within the V30? Some reports about the pixel (TheVerge) say that newer phones may be less affected.
The blue tint bothers me, but I really like the phone. Just wish there was a litte less tint.

So the Pixels are now equal to the V30? Because theirs was even bluer than the V30.
I don't see it because I don't look sideways at either of my LG V39/V30+. phone. My wife hasn't said a word about hers either.

take 5 pixel2xl and 5 v30, they are all different in screen quality... that is what bothers me.
maybe they come from several production batches, but technically they are the same.
does anybody know if there are any screen hw revisions on either pixel2xl or v30?
I know that different people have different opinion about quality. some use pc monitors with TN panels... not because they are so nice to look at, but because they are gamers and the panels switch fast.
oled is a promising technology, but LCD is way more mature... If you don't see the tint or if it does not bother you, that is ok for me. but I see it alot, and it bothers me. because I use several devices all day long; and if my personal device looks inferior/different, then I don't like that for the price paid...

Comparison between my old Xperia 1 II (how the screen should be) and my new Xperia 1 IV.
Is anyone having screen problems with their Xperia 1 IV like color banding and screen artifacts in dark areas of the screen?
I've tried everything to fix it like Factory reset and Software repair but nothing worked.
Nothing like that here. But looks more like some issue with status bar then the screen by your description.
If the screen is a bust, should be visible on lighter colours. If it is related just to dark colours than why is so perfect line just on status bar and nowhere else on the black screen.

Here's a better picture of what I mean, look at the artifacts around the moon on the Xperia 1 IV screen and there's nothing on my S22 Ultra screen, And I'm using the same JPEG picture on both devices, Photos and Videos look terrible.
And also the problem is the same described in this youtube video at 1:13
Hey,. I actually had the same issue. It appears to be related to the 120hz refresh rate, and it is really noticable when the display is dim. I think I found a way to fix it, as the issue is now gone on my screen after messing around to display settings.
1. Set the image settings to standard with auto creator mode on.
2. Set the white balance to custom, and move the slider to just before 9000 kelvin. This will make your screen a bit cool, but it's not too bad.
Let me know if that works for you. It did for me.

It didn't fix anything but made the colours pleasing to the eyes, I think I should wait for a software update.

I opened a ticket with Sony, I'll update as soon as I hear back. You should do the same so that the issue gets visibility. We may have defective screens

How I do that?
Just contact the Sony support by going to the Sony website. I've been playing around more, and I have a feeling that it has something to do with the auto-creator mode. I've turned that service off. See if it makes a difference for you.

I'd return it if you are still within the return period...I returned a faulty I IV, battery stopped charging after a week or so. Don't get involved with their pathetic Sony Support, they will try and fob you off with any old ****..."its a feature blah blah blah"...

Yeah I know but I'll wait for a software update nonetheless maybe it'll fix my problem, If not I'll personally go to Japan to fix it there at their own expense.
I haven't had time to take photos but I can confirm this issue, and I'm convinced every xperia 1 iv has this exact problem. The reason you normally don't notice it, is the factory white balance is strongly tinted towards green, which hides the fact that the shadows are also tinted green. As soon as you adjust the white balance towards any other colour (including actual D65 white) you'll notice only the midtones and highlights get adjusted, while the shadows stay green. Just like everyone else I hope a firmware update could fix it but realistically I don't think it will, and neither do I expect Sony to fix it in hardware. Maybe if it becomes a big enough PR issue for them.

It's a hardware problem, all mk IIIs had it too. It's not something you can patch. I had hoped Sony would change their screen supplier after how bad the III was, but alas.

I think it's a software problem because when I switch the brightness more than 90 percent and play HDR videos on youtube everything looks fine, But when viewing regular photos and videos below 90 percent brightness everything looks low quality.
Interesting, I read around a bit on the issue of the 1 III, and apparently all phones that use Samsung OLED screens have this issue. I can confirm it disappears at 90+ brightness, and OLED Saver (no longer available on Google Play but you can still get it from apk mirror sites) works to fix the issue. However of course OLED Saver has its own issues like dark screenshots and colour banding.
It sounds like this should be fixable with root, just need something to adjust the qualcomm display LUT (like Night Light) which should fix both the dark screenshots issue (display LUT does not show up in screenshots) as well as the banding issue (the LUT should work in 10 bit space as the display is 10 bit native).

I don't know but it appears there is an upcoming update version 64.0.F.9.8 for the Xperia 1 IV, I think we'll have to wait if it fixes anything, And also Sony replied to my problem by email with apparent nonsense.

I checked in with two friends of mine who both have Samsung phones with OLED screens -- presumably Samsung is vertically integrated enough that it uses its own displays in its own phones -- and neither of them had the issue. In fact, their near-black performance and lack of banding put my Xperia to shame. If the underlying hardware is the same or similar, then we should really hold Sony accountable for this. It's worrisome that Xperia 1 III owners have been dealing with and complaining about this issue for a year now and nothing has happened though.
Edit: It seems like the October 2021 update (62.0.A.3.131) fixed the issue for the 1 III. This makes it even more puzzling that the issue has returned at all on the 1 IV, supposedly Sony already knows how to fix it at this point?
Which region are you guys in? I'm in the UK and I never had this issue on my 1III or my 1IV, I do root my phone's before I even mess with them like so no idea if that's why I don't get it
I'm in the Netherlands and supposedly running the generic EU firmware.
Same problem here.
Every update so far did not fix it.
Some specs and what I have tried:
- Android 12, Update 64.0.A.5.71
- Software repair and factory reset did not help.
- XQ-CT54 (EU, Germany)
- White balance does not fix it
- Creator/Vivid mode does not fix it
- 120/60 Hz does not fix it
- Brightness > 90% is good, and < 90% is bad on SDR
- Brightness < 50% is REALLY bad on HDR
The problem:
What I have noticed is that black gets "crushed". Banding or distortion, call it whatever you want. Near black greys turn either black or greenish grey. Looks like a green tint, especially noticable in HDR. Otherwise it is some very slight greenish tint. The green tint gets reduced minimally when using 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz. Conditions are the brightness is below 90% in SDR and below ~50% in HDR.
- When booting the device there is green artifacts around the logo.

Also check the artifacts in the MrMobile video around 6 seconds (or screenshot below):
This is exactly what the artifacts look like.

I have sent all evidence to Sony support and they told me yesterday to send it in to checkup and repair.
Tomorrow I will check if my friends Xperia 1 IV has the same issue.
But I am thinking this can be fixed with a software update, I mean ... It looks perfect on certain brightness levels.
UPDATE:
So I checked with my friends Xperia 1 IV and he has the same black clipping problem as I have. BUT he has no green tint. Same settings on both devices and his was looking so much more natural.
Also I found out, that my 120Hz mode makes it even greener.
So I am thinking the black clipping is a software calbration bug of the display, because it does not occur on brightness above 90%. Also the display itself seems calibrated wrong (software fix possible?) or it is bad batch by factory with the green tint.
I will contact Sony again and their repair service and see what can be done about this. This is so frustrating.
