How to "force" Headphone mode on - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
this is maybe rather unusual as the majority of threads I found ask how to force DISABLE the headset mode, as usually the mechanics inside the headphone jack get stuck, which means the internal speakers doesnt work anymore.
I have a different problem - I have a toy "rc helicopter" lying around and would like to try to control it with this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uprtek.rd2.icontroller.goldlight&hl=de
unfortunately on my UMI Zero the headset control sort of doesnt work.
The app itself works fine, if I plug a regular headset in, I can switch the controls on. But when I plug in the "IR transmit module" into the headset jack it says "Plugin iController!!" I see that the controller is not recognized as a headset which is should. So is there any way to force-enable the headsetmode? I am sure it would work just fine and its only some sort of mechanical issue with the audio jack.
The problem is, the app refuses to start the controls until headphone mode is enabled. Even if the controller is plugged in.

Different reasons, but would love to see a solution to this as well. Must actually enable headset mode, not just force audio or something with soundabout.

Headset problem / feature

Hi All
I have been told by o2 that the following is a feature:
When my XDA has an incoming call, with the headset plugged in, the 'ringing' only sounds from the headset instead of the speaker.
Is this a feature or a fault?
Comments gratefully received
I'd say bit of both.
I've had my headset plugged in and heard the ringtone through both the headset AND the unit itself, but perhaps there's a way of making it so that the headset is the only audio (perhaps plugging the jack in whilst on silent then turning it back up?).
I've definitely had the headset ring out whilst the jack is connected.
A
Feature or fault, that's a hard one to call!
I would say it working as designed, since the headset will always override the speaker in any fashion.
I've never heard of this. All the US units ring in BOTH if the headset is plugged in. Unfortunately, message notification and alarms sound only in the headset though.
Hi,
As far as I have found out the behavior is not consistent. My device sometimes only ring in the headset and sometimes ring both. I have found out if you plug in the headset and connect via USB cable to the PC it will always ring both in headset and speaker. This is true even after you have unplugged the USB. Seems to me some flag I set during USB connation that enables this... ?!
For notifications - this only works via the headset... for me at least.
I find this annoying - the SmartPhone works as it should in regards to this.
I run 4.00.05 baked at this site... keep up the good work !
I had this similiar feature/bug experience too.
My XDA rings both on the headset and its speaker. One day, at some point, I managed to put it into a strange state. I started playing an mp3 with the windows media player (WMP) without the handset, it played thru its speaker (that's correct). And then I plug in the headset, mp3 came out from only the headset (that's correct too).
After that, I pressed "stop" the mp3 in the WMP, and then "play" again, mp3 came out thru both the headset and its speaker.
I don't seem to be able to reproduce this "feature" anymore now. Well, of course, that's after a reboot a while later.
In fact, now I've got a question then. Does that mean the on/off of the speaker can be controlled in software? AFAIK, like the iPAQ, it's controlled in the hardware, that means if you plug in a headphone, the speaker of the unit will be off.
Does that mean the on/off of the speaker can be controlled in software?

Yes, evidenced by the phone behaviour. Most devices use a simple contact in the headset connector to disengage the speaker, but obviously not the PE.

I would rather ask it to be a user defined option. I believe the current setup (both ringing) came after noticing that you can simply forget your headset plugged in so you may miss some calls.
But in some situations (ex: meetings) I would like to keep the headset plugged in and get the rining only through it.

Very strange SGS3 headset problem

There goes my first pos heret:
Recently I have bought an international SGS3 branded by T-Mobile and it is currently running I9300XXBLFB (ICS 4.04). Some time before that I have also bought a Belkin headphone adapter. What it does is that it basically provides a microphone and a standard 3.5mm jack port for the headphones of your choice. It also has a small 3button Apple like remote (answering button and +/- loudness controls). Good idea for someone who loves his headphones, which don't come with a microphone. It also comes with a TRRS ending typical for Apple.
The adapter worked ok on my Samsung wave with a TRRS switch (loudness control of course didn't work at all, but answering did; loudness doesn't usually work on anything but iCrap). It also seemed to work on my SGS3 at first, but without the switch (TRRS layout is the same as in Apple).
When plugged in I get a notification that headset is recognized, when I make a call the microphone works, headphones work and the answering button is able to stop the phone call. When not in a phone call the answering button starts and stops the music player, so again kind of a standard behaviour.
Now the fun part starts when I answer a phone call with the answering button. The call gets picked up BUT the headphone icon at the notification disappears (behaves like the headphones would get unplugged) and the microphone in the headset doesn't work anymore. I also am not able to drop the call and after I drop it with the phone itself the music switch via the headset doesn't work. Detaching and attaching the headset via the 3.5mm port again gives the headset icon back.
I compared it with two other headsets: stock and Thermaltake Isurus headset.
Both of them behave correctly when I answer a phone call. Both remotes work correctly as well, I am able to pickup and drop calls and the headset icon stays where it should.
Anyone has any ideas what may be wrong with the Belkin headset adapter? Or why SGS3 behaves so strangely with this accessory in particular? Anyone encountered this before?

[Q] VZW S4 Bluetooth and Headphone Jack

Ok with any other phone I have owned in the past I have been able to plug it in my aux jack in my car to stream music but use my BT to make/take calls. The music would pause during the call and when the call ended it would resume playing through the headphone jack.
The S4 refuses to do this, it is extremely a special kind of retarded.
I have researched CSC feature.xml and others/xml codes and build.prop
What is needed to make this work?
I dont want to use LINK as I feel it is just another layer added to what is not needed. I just want it to work like the GNex, N4, DX, Dinc, D1, D2, Charge, and all the other android phones I have owned in the past running both stock (rooted/unrooted) and CM based roms.
Anybody have an idea on what is needed?
What exactly is it refusing to do? Pause when you get a call? What music player (the player must respect the media intents to pause/mute and that has nothing to do with the phone/ROM in that respect).
If something is plugged into the headphone jack and I have a bluetooth device paired and on. When a call comes in it goes through the headphone jack and through bluetooth. If I unplug the cable from the headphone jack then it allows me to use bluetooth to take our talk on the call.
This is the only phone I have owned that does not allow me to pay music through the headphone jack and take calls through bluetooth without having to unplug the cable from the headphone jack.

I have the exact same issue with my Samsung S4 and have previously used the HTC Thunderbolt without any issue in my car the same manner.
Somehow the BT audio and mic becomes disabled during calls while the headphone jack is plugged in, if there is a way to enable this and disable audio from the headphone jack that would be the solution. So far I have not found a way to do this through any of the settings, very disappointing. It may need a programmatic solution unfortunately...
The sound quality from aux to bluetooth is minimal....why not just use bluetooth? Your making more work for yourself. You'll get calls...the audio will mute...then resume when calls end. I do this in my car...sounds and works just fine.

Guessing they don't have Bluetooth built into their cars. They are using a headset for calls and an aux jack for music.

Exactly... If u wanted my calls to route through my car I would not mind this. I take my calls privately and thus why I do it this way. I know I can setup multiple bluetooth devices and disable phone on one of them. But I have not found a bluetooth adapter to my liking yet.

Bluetooth not working correctly
This is definitely a bug on the s4. In the car I have Bluetooth and an aux Jack. The phone connects fine to Bluetooth and works as long as I'm not using the aux to play music in the car. If I'm listening to music through the aux/headphone jack and I get a call. Bluetooth recognizes the call, music on the phone stops playing, but when I answer, I cannot hear anything. If I unplug the headphone jack I can hear the call. This has been tested on different cars, different roms including stock, and always worked fine on previous phones. Can anyone help? It's easy to reproduce, not sure why more people haven't noticed.
Unfortunately, from what I read somewhere, this isn't a bug, it was intentional by Samsung.
I'm in the same boat, I use BT for my calls in the car, but the headphone jack for music out. If there's a cable plugged in, you can't even manually force a BT connection, it's grayed out and unavailable. Unplug the jack, and BT kicks in and picks up the call. Very inconvenient to say the least.
Any way around this?
I also have a question about how the Samsung will work with this in mind. In the past I have used a Motorola cable that has a micro usb plug on the phone end, and a full size usb and a 3.5mm aux out jack on the other. It allowed me to charge the phone and take the music out when docked in the car. Would this work with this phone? Has anyone tried it yet?
Here is a link to the cable I'm talking about.....

Sorry,I haven't tried that cable. Do you know why Samsung is doing that? I've had multiple phone including the galaxy nexus by Samsung abd never had this issue.

Can't just deselect the "media" (a2dp) profile for your vehicle?

I just noticed the same issue with my aux plugged in for music and BT for phone and received a call but could not hear anything. Could make and end calls but no sound in my car.
Seems like both get disabled when a call comes in and the phone is paired. Unplug the aux and BT works for calls fine.
I did some research and ending up purchasing Sound About Pro from the market for $2.99 and it solved the problem. It lets you force the calls to BT or AUX for that matter.
And yes, it still pauses the music and resumes when call is done.
$2.99 to fix a Samsung problem stinks but it works now

so with the defaults and A2DP turned off you can make your calls without unplugging cable...and do you use widget to turn it on and off or does everything else work normally with it on as well? i had phone call audio set to force bluetooth and sometimes after unplugging aux cable then going to headphones it would play through speaker until i switched widget off...will try with defaults when in car again, just curious how it works with you..
thanks

Correct. All works like it should until you force something. As a matter of fact just try it without changing anything. I let app decide

update...seems to be working great with default settings...didn't even have to purchase premium, think i might just because i was about to buy a bluetooth transmitter to fix this
I tried sound about and one problem I'm having is when using headphone jack for music and bluetooth for calls it won't play audio for voice dialing through bluetooth but once you make the call it goes to bluetooth. I use Google for voice dialing much faster than svoice. Seems like the first time it works then later after playing music it doesn't. Any setting I should change in sound about

Connecting a headset via usb otg

So, i have a Microsoft headset( that has both the headphones and a microphone) which is made for a pc, but since it connects via usb otg, i thought why not try it on my z2.
So, i plugged the headset in, i could mute the mic,(note : when i mute my mic a small led is turned on so u know when its muted) which meant that the phone could power it, and i downloaded an app just as a proof of concept. I think it was called usb audio tester, just to check whether my phone can actually use the headset. I tried both the headphones and the mic and they worked perfectly.
However, how can i instruct the phone to act the same way as if i was using a normal pair of headphones that connect via a 3.5mm jack?
What i mean is, can i actually tell the phone to redirect every sound to the usb headset, while also using the headset's microphone, just as a normal pair of headphones?
Anyone??
It works if you select high resolution audio over USB, however the volume will be at max. I gave up trying to get it to work with my g35's.

Resume Music during workout

Hi, I have had the problem that i was unable to resume my music during a workout when my bt headphones got into standby (and the music paused). I have tried several button combinations such as double tap, hold for a few seconds, single tap, etc, where as nothing really worked.
did i mess out something??
Are your headphones stereo, with support to AVCTP? When I tested my Pace with a mono headphone it didn't work for music control, as it doesn't support AVCTP, but my stereo headphones worked well. I am not sure if it works if the headphones disconnect during an activity (I've never seen one going in standby mode, mine are either on or off), but if you don't hear the connected sound after it goes on again, then it won't work.
