Installing Apps on a Kindle HDX 7 (3rd gen) without registering - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello,
So I bought a Kindle HDX 7 (3rd gen) for my girlfriend. She used it for a month and then a yellow line appeared on the screen. She contacted Amazon and they gave her a replacement and told her to discard/ recycle the defective one. Now I didn't see the point of throwing away the entire device just coz of the screen issue so I asked her to give the defective one to me. I did a factory reset on it. I can load documents and video files and music but they all appear in the Doc tab only. I am able to open Silk and use it like a basic tablet, but when I select tabs of Books or Music, etc, it asks me to register with Amazon. I tried doing that but it constantly rejects any email leading me to believe that the serial was blacklisted. So I've been scouring this site for clues on how to root the device/ install google play etc., but I am a bit confused now looking at the different links.
So far I've seen links with a cyanogen mod in here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...ent/rom-cm-12-unofficial-apollo-thor-t3050199
or the 'How to install Google Play here'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547054
So I'd be really grateful if you folks could point me in the right direction as in what steps do I need to take to either unlock my device/ be able to install apps/ read books and listed to music under the respective tabs. Is there a particular order to follow to install? I tried looking up the Sticky page but I'm still totally lost on what steps to follow in what order.
About my Kindle:
It is a Kindle HDX 7 (3rd gen)
Runs right now on Fire OS 4.5.5.1
I enabled ADB by going into the Developer Options (had to click 5 -6 times on Serial Number in Settings for the Options to appear)
Please let me know if I have missed out on providing you with other details about my Kindle.
Thanks a lot!

This guide works on my case :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...t-install-twrp-android-fire-os-8-5-1-t3278286

Careful! That guide is for a version of HD on 8.5.1, not HDX 3rd gen. Will brick your device.

Yep. I realised that the moment I looked through that guide.

FWIW - I am currently assisting another individual with the installation of a custom rom on a device with a similar configuration (sans registration issue). You can follow the conversation here.

[Q] New Yorker Galaxy Tab Edition

Hi all,
The New Yorker magazine has a Galaxy Tab edition of their app and I was wondering if there's ANY way to get this app for an Android phone. Surely there must be an .apk somewhere?
Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
I'd been looking for the APK, too. I found it last night and installed it on my ViewSonic G Tab (w/Vegan Gingerbread) and after a bunch of application errors, finally got it to work. I loaded the onto my Droid 3, but haven't gotten it to work.
It is a laborious processes with multiple downloads and registrations.
Go to www'nextissue'com/instruction'html# (replace ' with . - I'm not permitted to post outside links yet) At the bottom of the instruction page is a "Try downloading again" link that will start the download of the Next Issue (NI) apk.
Once you get the Next Issue app installed, you'll have to create an NI account.
With that installed go to the NI Store inside the app and click on The New Yorker (TNY) sample issue. In the new window, select the "Digital Upgrade" button.
You'll then have to enter your subscription information from your TNY mailing label. Once that is verified by NI, you'll be prompted to download the TNY/NI app.
After the TNY/NI app is installed you may have to input your NI login information again.
Then, the TNY issue has to be downloaded on to your device via the TNY/NI app.
When the download is done, you should be able to enjoy TNY on your phone/tablet.
Hope that helps.
Ok, so essentially, I'll still need a digital subscription. I wish there was a way to know it would work with my mytouch4g before paying for a whole year subscription.
there are sample issues to download and preview, though you may have to enter credit card info for the sample -- says you won't be charged if you cancel w/in 30 days.
try to download the apps, of you get that far and everything is working, then the magazines will probably work.
It seems like some print/mail subscriptions include the free digital subscription and others are additional $. I have print subscriptions for New Yorker, People and Esquire. After I entered my subscription numbers, only Esquire asked for payment info.
The New Yorker is working well on my tablet. The site says it's "optimized" for the Samsung Galaxy and Moto Xoom. People had a video that wouldn't play inside one of the articles so it may be that some features won't work on "non-optimized" devices.
Well, what I'm hoping for is to be able to pay to read it on my mytouch 4g and on my CM7 Nook color.
Does anyone have the apk for this? I tried to install TNY on my xoom using the NI Store and couldn't find the app listed. Their support folks then told me that it has only been released for the lower resolution devices so far.

[Q] Just got my Kindle hdx 8.9 should I root ?

Or not as all I want to do for now is play youtube vids , read manga/comics and stream anime mks from my server ? Can I do all this without rooting ?
Well if you've turned it on and connected to Wi-Fi you're most likely already screwed if you wanted to root. If you haven't I would suggest it if you don't care about prime services...I had my HDX set up to look almost aosp with the now launcher and all of google services running including the store...then the update put me back to this ****ty combo of android and fire os
Sent from my KFAPWI using Tapatalk
I have not turned it on yet and will not for a day or two to research this.So you suggest I should root it ?
I would suggest rooting if you fit the following:
- You feel comfortable rooting your device knowing that you are able to brick your device. You understand the risk
(I personally think it happens when low on battery power cuts the process off since it gets mentioned a lot, or installing the tools needed in a incorrect order could put you in a "boot loop" from what I've heard/read. Correct me guys if I'm wrong. Or confirm that's right. Or add to the small list from experience with bricking if you want. I have not bricked my two devices myself and rooted Android devices before using other dev tools).
- You want to customize your tablet into a hybrid of both Amazon OS/ with Android launcher.
- You prefer having access to paid apps on the Google Play store since you can not side-load paid Google apps (from PC to Kindle using USB). Personally I found that video games run smoothly on the paid emulators I bought so far from the Google Play store.
- If you truly haven't been updated yet.
To check: When you go to Settings / Device / System Updates and it says Current Version is 14.3.1.0_user_... (also heads up, don't connect to the internet. The update for 14.3.2.1 will download automatically and when it's done it will install by itself. I own a Kindle Fire HDX 7" with 13.3.1.0 on it but they are pretty much the same thing except for a few things designed specifically for that device being their different code and/or addresses I would assume)
- You've rooted a Android device before. That way you feel more comfortable.
Your 3 concerns you've told us: You can watch YouTube through Amazon's OS only using their web browser called Silk. If your comics are PDF then you can view those without rooting as well. I never used mks files if that's what you're referring to so I can't help you there. Other than that, that's all the info I think you need other than the process it takes to actually root the device.
Hope I helped explain clearly.

H0B0onDRUGS2 provided some sound advices regarding rooting for you...
However, I watch YouTube and streamed video files from my PCs on my non-rooted and updated KFHDX7. Even though I don't do it, but I'm fairly sure you can read comics too without root. What file formats are they?
I've never rooted as i actually like fire os. My lgg2 satisfies my need to root, mod, flash. etc.
As far as YouTube goes tubemate, available from the Amazon store, works well for me however I'll probably sideload og youtube at some stage. Don't know about comics or anime.
LgG2 d802 running Sotmax V5 ROM
Looks like I will root it as I dont mind getting my hands dirty and I dont like closed eco systems like apple/amazon ,only reason I got was I got it dirt cheap
PS the manga are i think cbr/cbz and mostly in rar/tar containers full of png's.

Can google book be installed on the kindle fire 8.9?

Hello,
I spent the better part of today trying to install Google books onto my kindle. This has been a fruitless effort, after reviewing some threads here at XDA, I noticed that this app isn't included in most packages. I have a good selection of books with google, and I actually prefer their platform over all others. It would be great if I could get this app installed on my kindle.
Also, this tablet has been sitting in a stand for the better part of two years, I have tried to use fastboot, and it seems that I can't get to that mode. Once fastboot commands are issued, the system reboots. It loads as if I never issued the code, however. Do I need to update anything to make this work? Any help with either of these issues would be great. Thank you for your time.

Given device age assuming this is a 3rd gen HDX. Which version of FireOS is currently installed?

My Android phone thinks it's my Kindle, and my Kindle thinks it's my Android phone.

Please bear with me while I try to explain this. If I can figure out how to upload pictures, you'll be able to see what I mean, but if not, then I hope you will be able to comprehend my poor attempt at explaining this. I'm on the internet with my Fire HD6 4th Gen (vs. 4.5.5.1). I've downloaded apps (more than once) and I keep getting this message: " No carrier" and then it lists the model of my phone. I get another message on my Fire that states: *App name*requires root and will be installed on your device soon". I look on my Samsung Galaxy S5 and now there's a message telling me that the app I wanted on my Fire is now on my phone. I'm learning to manage my frustration so I'll leave it to your imagination to insert your favorite expletives

Need help figuring out what to do! Fire HD 7 (4th Gen)

Hi! I have been reading through these forums for a couple hours now and I am still confused on what to do. Any help would be appreciated!
I am trying to get my Netflix on my Kindle Fire to cast onto my TV. From what I've gathered, the only way to do that is if I root my device, is this correct? I currently have a Kindle Fire HD 7 (4th Generation) that is running 5.3.1.1. To my knowledge, there isn't a way to root my device with the current firmware that I'm on. If I am able to downgrade to 5.3.1.0, and edit the build.prop, will I be able to use my Netflix with CC through my Fire? How can I make this work? Could anyone give me a step by step on what to do?
Is flashing CM the same thing as rooting?
I am a beginner at rooting and honestly anything Android. I have experience jailbreaking and with iOS, but this is all completely new to me. I've been overwhelmed by all the information, I really need someone to explain it all to be simply. Thank you!
If you just want to cast from Netflix, you don't need to root.
Just Install the Google Play Store (follow instructions in link):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
Then install Netflix and Google Home (formerly Chromecast). You should be good to go.
Rooting is like JailBreaking, gives you access to stuff you were formerly locked out of. Flashing CM is putting a custom version of android on the tablet.
Good luck!

Hi! Thank you for replying. I do have Home, Play Store and all of the other things installed. Other apps such as HBO Now work with the Chromecast, but Netflix does not. I think Amazon disallowed Netflix to work with Chromecast so when Netflix detects what my device is, it doesn't give me the option to cast. The button doesn't show up at the top of the app. I'm trying to bypass that by editing the build.prop (I read it it another thread?) so that Netflix thinks I am on another device and allows Chromecast to work.
I downloaded Netflix from the Play Store and even downgraded to an older version, but none of those things have worked. If you know another way to help me or advice on what to do, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
I am having the same issue. I can cast Google Play Movies all right, but cannot cast Netflix. Chromecast icon does not show up.
Is there any solution to this? Preferably with no rooting involved.
