Community Is Dead - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Really wish this phone didn't flop as hard as it did. I assume root will never occur with the remaining variants and the lack of overall threads and activity tell me this entire community is dead before it even got off the ground.

I truly hope not. This is a great device and there are good people working on it. I have had little to no issues with my G5 I would really like to see root for it.

There was much drama earlier on with bounties for root. With lock bootloaders it seems near impossible especially with a lack of commitment from devs from the fore mentioned drama. I hope there can be a sort of peace flag raised if that is still an issue. In the meantime I haven't observed much from developers if they are indeed still working on roots. My expertise is no where in dev but more testing of nightlies. I hope I am wrong too.

These threads are always amusing.
Sometimes, often, things are happening behind closed doors. Devs know better than to put what they're doing out there because it creates an environment for "how much longer" and "whats the status". With that being said I can almost guarantee nobody is working on root for the locked variants. If you have one and want root, move on to a device that is rooted.

That's what I'm saying. So many devices don't have root that have been out for awhile now. What I was saying is the lack of activity for the G5 tells me this ship has already sailed.

Wait a few weeks and then sell it on Swappa or something, get an HTC 10. My wife got a G5 for a buck, right before it all hit the fan with the root rumors. It's a fine phone but I feel bad that she got stuck without tethering since we don't have any other service at home. I held off for a day to see what would happen and it ended up going back to $149 so I said screw it. I'm glad I did, my G3 is still just dandy and I've got a 2-year upgrade still waiting for me if the 10 goes on sale. My wife might switch back to her S4 if she needs to tether when I'm not around.

I don't see this going anywhere contributive. Thread closed.

New email replies from HTC on the bootloader situation.

Came from a friend on another forum:
The bootloader will be unlocked, it's just a matter of when; we're trying to get it ready to release and hope to have this soon. Our official announcements, since this is a priority situation, will go directly to our social media outlets when they're ready (like the previous announcements). You'll hear about it when I do. I do hope that it is soon for you.
Sincerely,

The person who sent the email responded asking why other people were getting vague emails that gave no certain answer on the future of the 3vos bootloader.
This is the return reply:

I don't see any evidence that their definition of soon matches with my definition of soon...it is a relative term, after all.
I'm going err on the side of caution, unfortunately. They have 2 weeks.
Regardless of time frame, we are all at the mercy of HTC sadly enough
The date on that link is June 17.

I realize when the date is.
Everyone is rather impatient here. I understand it, but It is not like a company can output a perfect unlocked everything for a phone overnight without bricking a large number of them. It takes time.
I apologize for the repeat thread. Half these threads present have people up in arms and intending to return the phone. So I posted a new thread in hopes of lighting up the mood.

I would imagine it has more to do with appeasing partners (read: Sprint) than it has to do with technical hurdles...though I'm sure there is still a redundantly redundant amount of testing involved. Most of it is probably policy and politics than anything else.

They just need a way to do it.... How about PC only unlock ...not ota. That will help sort out the tards that can brick to those who want to tinker.
enjoying my EVO 3D. But root would be nice.

I don't get the whole I'm taking my phone back in 2 weeks, if HTC doesn't have it unlocked. It's going to happen to the phone. Whether it's through HTC or teamwin or someone else, its going to happen. Be patient, these guys will come through for us.

Thats not how they are going to do it simple as that. I asked given xHausx suggested they just post up a firmware.zip on their site for those that wish to flash and get the ENG bootloader flashed and achieve s-off. Their response was that "...that is not the way they choose to fix the problem, and they will do so with a OTA software update.."
end of story is that it WILL get done, but there is no ETA as they NEVER provide ETA's specifically. And they do this b/c there is no telling what problems might arrise while developing the fix. If they said 2weeks and ran into an issue and got delayed then there would be another uproar tossed at them.
Also why when they say they are releasing a new OS update they usually say by the end of X qtr. so they have a TON of leway.

If teamwin does it great. However I would be very surprised if there weren't strings attached to HTC's solution and no thanks to that. If the SGS2 would be announced for a pre-September release date the 3D is going back.

Well, in if that happens in 2 months from now you and the 3 remaining devs will have a blast I'm sure. This technology moves way too fast for delays like this. The first 30 days is a given, return period, time to root, etc...but this time we are up against heavy duty security for heavy duty securities sake.
While I do exaggerate a bit my point remains. We don't have time to wait as much as you think we do...developers want to develop, and when they put a commitment into a device, well, not being able to develop a god damned thing for that device is kinda a turn off. Few of our best ROM developers are also the low-level guys doing the heavy lifting and intense probing and testing required to attain root/s-off...there is an overlap, yes, but most of these guys just want to make a rom or work on a kernel, and that is to say nothing of the theme guys who operate as creative talent before technical talent...
This is an elaborate ecosystem of skills and talents here. If you happened to be one of us lucky ones in the EVO4G community from the beginning you should know that it was a bunch of coincidence and a pre-release root (and the happenstance of Sprint getting its first kickass superphone--now a regular event)...so don't expect that magic to sit around waiting for this phone to be opened up.
I'm not saying it can't happen, but that there were a lot of factors that went into it happening last time--just having a decent phone and a forum weren't what made it happen.
Let me start by saying yes, I am dying to have root myself. I miss cm7, wireless tether, even stock themes, tb, and a whole list of things (my ORD is definitely flaring).
Now let me go on to my real point. All you "omg they have two weeks" people... Is the phone really that unusable as it is? My old hero, I couldn't live without root for overclocking. My shift originally ticked me off with crappy old sense, and then I didn't understand why they didn't make the new update sense 3.0. This phone, at least for now, is up to date, and blazing fast. Root is not a deal breaker on this phone for me like my past phones. And I hack everything... Wii, cr48, router... But I don't find it completely neutering on this phone like other devices

It's a very capable phone, I agree. But it has far more potential than it has capability...and I didn't buy this phone to only be as capable as the phone it was replacing (a heavily modded EVO4G) with the only difference that I can actually see is a resolution difference.
Sure, we knew it would come locked. I knew I'd have this decision to make. It's a very capable phone. But it is also capable of so much more...that's what I want out of it. My 4G was doing everything at least as fast and with at least as good battery life with far more flexibility...
...the only reason I am so impatient is for the reason I posted above. If it doesn't happen relatively quickly the spark will fade rapidly. I feel very comfortable in the 30-day window. But as the 30 day window closes I am not going to be the only one who sizes up this situation and has to make a decision...more important than me and you and all of the other users there are the developers. The ones who provide the value-adding goodies that we love so much...without them we just have a phone like a million other phones, excuse me, that takes 3D pictures and/or Video...the only differentiating feature really....sure, HTC didn't sell a device that was intended to do the things I want to do with it--but it could...until they made it so it couldn't specifically...artificially...
You might not get it...if that's the case, congrats, this is the phone for you. No regrets. Rock on. But for me and what I would imagine are the majority of others here that is a deal breaker.....
@daneurysm: very, very well stated. I'm with you 100%

I have purchased your mogul, evo, and now evo3d. I would like to say that I love the evo3d, its an amazing device. But, if the bootloader isnt unlocked or rooted by the time my 30 days is up, I will be returning it. I feel as though I own the device, and used my hard earned money to buy it, and like a computer I should have access to it. I understand the consumer doesn't matter at all in todays corporate run world, but this is my stance, as is many others. I bought it, I own it, it is no longer yours or sprints as I'm not leasing it, I own it, its mine. Thanks, maybe.
their reply.
I certainly understand that you're looking for the bootloader of the EVO 3D to be unlocked. This is indeed something that we're working on, true to our word. We don't have a date set yet for when the update to do so will be available, but as this is a high priority situation when there is news on the subject it will be posted to our social media outlets, like our Facebook and our Twitter just as the previous announcement was. I hope that it is soon.

My apologies

I was off to a great start on XDA, helped a lot of people, made a mod or two and gathered a decent number of thanks.
Lately though, I've been frustrated and it's showing in my posts.
I'm frustrated because after probably more than 150$ in donations to different people, it seems that developers left one right after the other and that money I gave to encourage development is now used to develop for another phone.
I understand there's no obligation for developers to stick to a phone for ever, everyone wants to play with the new hardware and being a hardware junkie myself, I really can't blame anyone for that.
I gave to Scott because I ran his ROM for quite awhile and it was really stable. Probably because it is stock with the fat trimmed but that met my needs. Later on I hear about all this talk going on about how he's not a real developer and he left.
Then I gave money to bored at least twice, once for his S4 Rom, and once again to help him get a new laptop. Shortly after he vanished for personal reasons. It's probably something big, probably not his fault, bad things happen and sometimes our priorities changes but it seemed that once again I encouraged someone who had to go away.
Lastly, I donated twice to Joel for his S4 ROM and to encourage him to continue developing and we now know what is happening. He doesn't seem to have the time and with the Roms coming out for the GNex and the One X, if I was a developer, I would be all over the new hardware as well.
So those events made me frustrated and I think I managed to p!ss off quite a few people so I'm sorry for that. I tarnished my own reputation because instead of accepting all that, I wanted something for my donations and I got nothing.
I decided to change the way I see things and consider my donations as a contribution to work that was done in the past. I used CleanRom so I donated for that, I used S4 a lot and Bored helped me port his blue theme so that it works with 3.6 Roms, and I donated for that. I didn't really run Joel's ROM a lot because the lack of bluetooth and screen rotation lag was too much for me but still, he put some good stuff together and it was good while it lasted.
So once again, I apologize for anyone I offended or rubbed the wrong way. Donating only to see people vanish got the best of me and I'm paying for it now because of my latest posts.

no hard feelings bro. id feel pretty pissed too if i donated money and it didnt lead to anything. this community, is broken right now. we have about three devs for cdma and 1 gsm left. i want to stay but it seems i cant! im pretty sure im leaving to get a GSM gnex and go to tmobile. its just better for me right now. believe me, THIS IS THE INTERNET!!!! if anyone gets offended, they are p*ssies
I started to think of the fact that the money I donated would have bought me almost a third of a One X at full retail price but developers do release ROMs before getting donations so I'm trying to see it as contribution done in the past, not in the future.
hey man, i'm just as upset as you with the developers leaving. our community really has been shot to hell, and i don't really see it recovering very well, and that sucks. we started off as a small, close, tight-knit community from like weeks before launch date. many of us were familiar faces from the Inc forum, so we were enjoying ourselves. once we got bigger, i guess everything began to get on peoples' nerves: lack of AOSP, RIL, kernel source, ICS not being released, etc etc.
now, we have less than a handful of developers left, as they've all left for the nexus.
hang in there, the source/ update drought cant last forever. If you can make it through the wait, it's inevitable that the combination of the hardware + the price of this phone will bring talent. I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those folks you mention above make their way back here again. Being stuck on 2 year old software isn't really exciting for many devs, but it's where we're at for the time being.
Nice to see that you have a new outlook dude

I like where this thread is going and I agree with the sentiments behind it, hopefully no one will come in here and turn this into a troll-fest.
Personally, I think this is a natural (though unpleasant) thing that's going on. In the forums for my last device, this exact same thing happened - as frustration grew over manufacturer/carrier delays for the next big/promised release and source code, things got bad in the community. It got ugly. Then the release finally came and source finally came and some really good things happened, including CM9. I haven't been back there in a long time so I have no idea what it's like now, but that's the way I left it. I'm hoping once we have source that good things will happen. I believe we'll see some new faces and maybe some old ones.
The one thing that complicates matters in the Rezound forums is the issue of donations (in my opinion). In my old device's forums, a lot of the devs (maybe most) refused to take donations, or at least discouraged donations, and actually it seemed the most talented devs were the ones most likely to discourage/least likely to accept donations. Here, a lot of the devs (most? all?) accept and even encourage donations, in some cases outright asking for them. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I've donated to at least 3 Rezound devs myself, but there are risks that come along with accepting/encouraging donations. The people who donate then expect certain things, expectations are higher, and if you don't deliver or if you leave before delivering, you have to expect some people are going to take it hard. I'm not saying I agree with that, it's just human nature. There is a fine line between donating to encourage someone and outright paying them for an expected outcome.
I don't think I ever posted anything negative towards any dev, and I've never taken sides in the current "war" that's going on. I must admit there is one thing I really don't get in all this, one thing I really would like to post and ask about because I'm honestly confused by it, but I know 100% it would turn into a troll feeding frenzy, so I'm just going to keep it to myself and hope for better days ahead.
Personally I love this phone (aside from battery life) and think it's still better than a lot of devices coming out now. I'd love to get more into the dev game myself if I could just. find. the. frickin. time...
That was long-winded, I apologize...
I thank you all make good points and I feel the same way also and I'm so tired of all the childish stuff that just keeps going on iv been with most these dev's sense(pun intened) the inc and they all are very talented but really don't blame them for leaving whether it be personal or not.on that note thank you to all the modders themers and devs and anyone that's a helper and not a troll

I don't blame people for wanting to go develop for a newer hardware platform, I would do the same and if I could afford it right now, I would buy a GNEX and let Google feed be with updates.
We still love you.
The development section hasn't had anything good in at least a month.
I don't see the rage about the new S3, or Nexus (plus thought nexus was blocked for US sales??). I'm really enjoying the Resound and am having Zero issues at the moment with it. It would be nice to get some of the new updates rolling quicker with the phone, but the amount of work developers have put into the current roms is amazing. They are all very talented people, and there's no possible way to thank them enough for all they've done. I just do really hope some end up trailing back in our direction and bring/breathe more life into this phone..... Particularly Jellybean.

Let's see VZW/HTC stated this phone officially would have ICS Q1, it is now Q3 and they have yet to deliver. This phone has already passed it's shelf life so I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't see the official ICS/source for another month, or two, or three. It sucks but you just gotta face it, this phone is dead. Great phone with a lot of potential, troll community destroys any hope of AOSP or the improvement of current roms.
The thing is, manufacturers have zero motivation to update the software on their phones because they make no money off of that and have to spend money on development.
If not coming up for an update for the Rezound and putting the latest on the One X, they ensure that anyone who wants the latest android will spend money on a new phone.
Yeah we're rooted and we do have the latest, but despite that, I think we all share that itch to get the newer phone with the slightly better CPU and a little bit more RAM.
It's a fact that faster hardware doesn't always make for a faster phone, the quality of the software running on it makes a huge difference as well. I see the same thing on my rezound, sense launcher has never been smoother while 3rd party launchers like Nova, Apex, Go, have never been slower. Open the app drawer, everything is smooth but flip through screens on the desktop and you get that low framerate feel.
I wouldn't consider the GNEX too old to buy but I'll be enjoying my Rezound until the next phone from Google.

Maybe some people need to change their expectations.
I don't donate for future work. Since it's entirely possible that the dev has run into a creative or technical wall, I think it's an unrealistic expectation. But that's just me.
I donate because I appreciate the work the dev has already done. If he takes the donation as an "attaboy" as inspiration for bigger and better things, I consider that a bonus.
Nilsp's ROMs are just about the only ones I've used since I got my Rezound. I appreciate the consistent quality, that he'll answer a question almost anytime of the day or night without snark, and that his ROMs are in a constant state of improvement. I've bought him at least one beer if not two, and if he can get Sense 4 to run properly, I'll buy him a case.
BTW...Nilsp had to be coaxed into accepting donations. Like many of the devs, his satisfaction seems to come in beating the challenges and the simple thanks the users of his product give him. The rest...beer money.
I think another problem with this community is the sense that Verizon has practically orphaned this phone right out of the gate. It was supposed to be a top of the line phone...by technical standards, it's still one of their best phones eight months out of the gate, which is saying something...but they never promoted it, and the dragging of their feet with the ICS update is simply maddening, given that they implied it would be one of the first to get it.
I like this phone. I'm pretty much stuck with it for another year anyway, but I can't see the advantage to jumping at quad cores, especially since few apps can truly take advantage of the extra cores anyhow.

I agree with you, but not completely. You see, I've noticed two ways of inviting for donations.
1. "If you like my work, please consider donating". That I agree with you, a donation is for past work and no expectations should be assumed on either side. You like the current rom and you want to donate, send a few bucks and enjoy the phone. No one ever said there would be a next version.
2. "Let's get 'x' a phone so that he can develop for the Rezound". This is far different than the first one. This, in simple terms, means "If you buy me a phone, I will release something". Maybe just one Rom supported for a little bit, maybe more, but this DOES imply that if the developer gets his/her new phone, that this person will develop something. This is money for future development.
Going with the second method is risky because it does set an expectation to get something back for getting that person a phone. Those expectations are likely to be different between the developer and people who donated. I am convinced that this is why there is so much friction and frustrated people in the Rezound forums. Different people have different expectations and some people are bound to feel like they deserve more.
I learned my lesson though. Next time someone needs the community to help them get a device, I'll politely pass because this concept of donating for future work is at high risk to cause frustrations.

Nobody bought me a phone. I'm not buying someone else one.
I prefer developers who plan to use their phone and their ROMs as daily drivers...because that's how I use my phone. If I'm helping a dev buy a phone, he's only in it for the challenge. Once he thinks he's met that challenge, he's off looking for a new one...while I've still got a year or more to go on my contract. And all of that presumes we're talking about an ethical developer...one that's not using his buddy's phone to do the work and pocketing the donations. ---NOTE---that is not an accusation pointed at anyone, just a hypothetical.
I'm not the government. I don't pay for future development....because more times than not, it doesn't work out to be much of a bargain for the taxpayer.

yeah, nils is the man. made some badass roms on the Inc, and continues to do so on the rezound.

Meaning, the 'all other devices' no longer works, since as was pointed out, it was never technically on the official list to begin with.
no fkidding?
need to verify before I cancel my pending pre-order.
I don't think it was ever on the list. The accounts I've read are of people selecting the "other supported devices" option.
I'll likely cancel my pre-order too. This makes me sad, I was so exited about this device.

This dont scarw me. I'm getting one. You got some of the best devs working on this.
As stated above, I am also totally willing to live with stock for a while. The great devs around here haven't let us down yet and I doubt they will now.:good:
God I hope so, I'm just picturing another OneX situation..
I figured this would happen sooner than later which is why I was going to pick one up tomorrow morning, but the night before is BS.
This is like the Rezound all over again. By the time S-Off was possible, I had lost interest and never bought one. I guess I'll keep my GNex a while longer. As much as I want this phone tomorrow, I'll likely never buy it or any other HTC phone.......unless the dev's pop out in the next week or two with an unlock for the bootloader and S-Off, then I'll reconsider. I just wonder if VZW or HTC have a way of quantifying lost revenues due to locking the phones down.

and yet, VZ still wants us to bend over.
That's why I don't say any thing about HTCDev website. Once Verizon hears a device can be unlocked, its game over.
Pardon my complete ignorance. I've only had one HTC device before (Spouses TBolt), but I rooted it when I first got it and rooting instructions went live on XDA. What's the likelihood of rooting the DNA without having the HTCDev site unlocking it. Again, sorry if this is an elementary question.....
I am getting this phone tomorrow and give my S3 to the spouse, but I remember the wait before that phone was rooted, and it was agonizing. A Perm Root method came out literally on the 14th day, my last day to return it, so I got lucky. Do you think this will stunt development for this phone? I love using different, power-sipping kernels on to my devices.....

You do realize that a quality ROM will probably not be out for weeks. Not quite sure what you are looking to do the very first day with your bootloader / root. I am willing to wait a couple of weeks as I am sure the devs will figure it out.
I'm am so pissed, but this kind of thing happens every year when I upgrade. I'm still getting mine tomorrow, and just praying S-Off won't take as long to achieve like it did for the Rezound. Fingers Crossed

Is anyone actually surprised by this? By most accounts, this was entirely expected given what has happened with some previous Verizon HTC devices. Like the Incredible 4G, which could be unlocked via the site before it was officially released, but once the release date actually rolled around, it no longer worked.
I prefer to have root just for wifi tether and titanium backup. Just so much easier to restore apps with it then to try and use each app's backup/restore process.
I'm not looking until Feb anyways, but definitely disappointing.
This seems like a deal breaker to me. I was all hyped up about this but not so much anymore.

My recent discussion with Samsung... I don't know if this is against the rules but...

So I was into rooting jail breaking all sorts of stuff a couple of years ago just because I like to know how things work. I'm an electrician as well so this is a part of my life everyday. But electronics are my playground. Anyway, I have an GS4 i545 of1 build. i don't use it so for fun I've been dinking with it. Bricked it several times brought it back from death. I got onto a chat sesh with Samsung saying "Hey tell me how to unlock the bootloader. I have a 16GB phone that I'd like to put 16GB worth of music on throw it behind some books on a shelf and blast my music through the Stereo in my home. It's barely clinging onto life as it is. I've got brown face tape covering the the front componenet due to the fact i broke the screen when moving. But, here's the kicker. ITS MY PHONE! I want the 16GB of space I paid for. No I don't want amazon's book club for balding men or whatever else they put on it. I don't go to McDonalds order a cheese burger and give the dude who took my order 2 bites! My word for word come back to their advice to not root this phone was that if i took everyone's advice I'd be dead from getting hit by a car when my mom told me to go play in the street for a couple hours. Anyway, I'm at the point where If I have to pay an arm and a leg to use this phone while I'm their customer, when the time comes for me to purchase another one either give me full rights to my product or buy it back from me at half price! So. Now Samsung told me to ask verizon.... Verizon didn't build the phone. they did. but I'll go ask mommy and get the same answer and I'm going to ship half the phone to Samsung and half to Verizon and ask them each to pay for half since this was the only way i could to figure out to get the bootloader from keeping from doing what I wanted! lol, ok rant over.:silly:

You are preaching to the choir.
I had a few spare minutes this morning while I was eating breakfast, so I figured I'd get Verizon's response. It's what you'd expect. The representative was sympathetic though.
Will: Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless Chat Team regarding your device. How can we help you today?
You: Hello! I own a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-i545). I bought it new from you guys and it's fully paid off. I'm thinking about upgrading to a new phone and using the S4 as a media player. However, I would like to unlock the bootloader so I have full control over my device and can continue to apply security updates.
You: I have read Verizon's official policy at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5YY_3KIKjphSklad0NPaEtjMDA/view?usp&eq;sharing. However, my device is out of warranty so I will not be requesting support, and I will be using it without a SIM card so there's no potential for it to disrupt your network. Additionally, other major carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile allow bootloader unlocks, seemingly without any major negative repercussions. Finally, you actually sold a Galaxy S4 Developer's Edition with an unlocked bootloader (SCH-I545ZKDVZW), so it seems you've already made this functionality publicly available.
You: In light of these facts, I feel like it's reasonable to request full access to the four-year-old hardware which I've fully paid for. Could you please direct me to the necessary file(s) to unlock the bootloader on my Galaxy S4?
Will: Thank you for the info and for the request. I assure you I will do everything I can to help you get to what you're after. To get started, may I have your wireless number with area code?
You: Sure, it's (XXX) XXX-XXXX.
Will: Thank you for that. I want to be absolutely upfront with you, from a principle perspective, I personally agree with you - a device you paid for you should be able to do what you'd like with it, accepting any and all risks and responsibility of course, which you seem to fully understand. I have no problem searching for any updated info we have on unlocking the bootloader for you. I'll need a few moments to do this, will that be okay?
You: Sure, that would be great. Please take your time.
Will: I really appreciate it. As of now we don't have resources or the tools to perform such an action. My understanding is when it's locked, it's built that way and cannot be unlocked by Verizon. That does not necessarily mean it cannot be unlocked by all, just means it takes methods beyond what we can do within our scope of support here.
Will: *correction: doesn't mean it cannot be unlocked at all
You: Fair enough! I'm disappointed, but I understand there may not be anything you can do. I really appreciate your checking for me though! If you keep track of this sort of thing, could you please make a note about my request and maybe consider revisiting your policy about locked bootloaders in the future?
Will: Absolutely - it's something I'm personally passionate about. I get that there's a certain population who messes with their phones and don't know what they're doing, but for the rest of us I think there should be at least some give on that. I will definitely continue to lift feedback up, and the more customers who do that could lead to some change down the road.
Will: Now that we've covered that, will that be all you'll need for today?
You: Yep, I won't take up any more of your time. Thanks a lot, hope you have a great day! Goodbye.

Unfortunately this is what I did. I got the iPhone for the wife cause it's reliable. Her last Verizon Moto X became unusable after update and could not be rolled back due to locked bootloader. I was like my work iPhone still gets updates and works fine after 5 years so I got an iPhone for her and one for me so I knew how to help her if needed. I miss android sometimes but having to buy a new phone every 2 years cause phone isn't supported anymore and has security holes just seems ridiculous.

Time to move on
All unlock bootloader talk is a waste of time. If Samsung/VZW do it for this phone then they will have a horde of nerds clamoring for the same for every device ever made then they would have no integrity for their OTA system and they would start receiving bricked devices. If I were running VZW I would make the same decision not because I am a phone nazi but because I have a #15 on Fortune 500 company to run and it needs to run predictably and reliably for the vast majority mass flocks of sheep who will never even hear of root and if they ever do they will brick their phones in the first 5 minutes because nobody reads direction and that put a burden on the warranty department.
My answer would be "if you want to play with root and use VZW go buy a Moto X Style direct from Moto for $400 (CMDA and LTE 4 and 13), flash a CM13 nightly, and come back and buy a SIM and pay for a month-month account. Thank you."
Eventually I will buy an unlocked phone and stay with my $24/mo Cricket deal and never look back at a locked device. Let's move on.

I get what you're saying and I'm sure that everyone that has dealt with this are still red in the face with anger but here's my problem. You go pay $400 for the moto whatchamacallit and I pay over double that and you get to do more? eh I'm just us as customers of vzw/samsung need to say "well bye!" and do what you're saying. but Id rather be ripped off by an online scam and not know who it was rather than a large electronic company that make refrigerators that you can log on to and see if you have milk in it... Don't you think they could invest a little time and effort into making a product that would work for all three (vzw/samsung/customers) of us? Maybe I'm crazy, maybe my red hair on my bum is getting warm and just making me one mad ginger... either way I know what I want with my money as I know other people do. it's fun doing this and they are trying to take away something that keeps me entertained when I have nothing to do. WAY BETTER THAN SITTING ON MY BUTT WATCHING FRIENDS OF SOME BS! *drops a samsung phone at your feet and walks*
My point exactly
LIke I said, this is a waste of time. You are not crazy you just don't understand how the people running a gianormous company think. I'll give you a hint: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and anything that disrupts that gets flushed. The .5% of smartphone users that want to root and ROM are a disruption, get it? Probably everyone on the SCH-I545 forum with a locked BL bought it by mistake and learned a tough lesson. So soon I will go elsewhere. ~$220 for a brand new AT&T LG G3 on Amazon and $40 on Cricket (as low as $24 on a group plan) buys you all the flash freedom you want. I didn't care for the call quality so I'm holding out for better but could flash the latest CM13 nightly all I wanted. Moto X is great but 5.7" is too big for me. Brand new HTC M9's can be had for $300 on Amazon and I'm considering it. Or hold out and save for an HTC 10 next year when they are not $700 freakin dollars and CM devs have had some time with it.
If you have nothing to do then find some side work and earn some $ for an unlocked phone. But if what you are saying is you paid $800 for a locked SCH-I545 then I can't help you.
Kirk out.
You could also buy any Nexus device. In my case a Nexus 7 (2013) for $125 on Swappa. I have tried on so many different ROMs I'm almost burned out......almost, but never completely. I do feel that VZW and Sammie make a great product. But we should have the option at signing to have an unlocked boot, and agree to forego OTAS and warranty work.
P. S. Where ever you bought your S4, you got ripped. They should get some of that Ginger ire as well?

SAD

Came across my old files from when I used to build for this device. Doesn't seem that it's been over nearly 5 years since I've had a release on this device. Saddens me, as I still have my old Motorola Photon. It's the one phone I will never sell. It's still the first Android device I owned and it's the first time I ever tried my hand at any sort of computer programming. I have so many fond memories of this device and it's userbase. We truly had the best crew around...with @Jokersax11, Spleef, Lokifish Marz, and I all working to bring the latest and greatest to this device that Motorola so quickly dumped with no future support. We did our very best and brought some kick ass things that most people hadn't considered before (Project Sink being one of them). This was something I poured 30+ hours every week into and I LOVED IT.
Back in 2012/13 when we rocked this device, this was THE BEST userbase. Users knew how to READ, wanted to LEARN, and didn't expect us to spoon feed them. In many ways, it was the epitome of all that was wonderful with Android....and it saddens me to see what it has become. I sit on threads and consider a return for years now (I've dabbled on the M7, M8, Note 4, and G4, but never worked like I did back then), and see all the bickering...the squabbling....the lack of effort on the part of the users, and it makes me just say "forget it". It's become like reality television with people wanting everyone to just give them something without requiring a bit of effort on their part and with virtually NO understanding of the processes they're doing, as all they do is input some pre-printed instructions. And when something goes wrong? Well, it's demand a fix time as if the hobby that this is to most devs is actually their JOB.
I want to say a sincere THANK YOU to everyone who helped me along the way in my journey that was the Motorola Photon....to all the users who provided logs and tested ROMs for me and provided feedback, I say that you all are a part of my life....you all put faith in a guy who had little computer knowledge when he started but had a thirst to figure it out and for that I appreciate each and every one of you. To all the devs who worked with me on this wonderful little device and have largely walked away due to how Android (and XDA) have become over the years, I say that the Android world was better when you were in it. Users who didn't get the benefit of using your work truly have no idea what they are missing.
Yes, I just upgraded to the S8....I love my brand new shiny device, but it will never be irreplaceable like the MoPho. Who knows....maybe I'll try to find some source for an old version of CM and build a ROM for this sometime....never know. Till then, Thanks again everyone!
thank you
thanks for all you did. i wouldn't mind reviving the old MoPho. looking forward to whatever comes .
thanks again
Thank you
Ready and waiting, in case you come back and make something new... Love this little phone!
I would love to find a way to unlock the bootloader on the Electrify. The design of this phone is so incredible, and I hate that it is stuck on Gingerbread.
just popped back into the forums and saw this post. I totally agree with you! This group of people was AWESOME!!! I've really taken a more hands off approach since this device, not that i did any dev work like you guys. I miss the days of commenting and downloading the latest build and seeing what was broke and what wasn't. All the new phones are not even close to what this was back in the day.
That being said, my Essential Phone arrives Monday, see how that goes

Depending on HOW your Electrify got 2.3.5, it might still be capable of being unlocked. If you took the OTA, it's done. However, if it came factory loaded with 2.3.5, you could still use the unlocking tools. I have an Electrify that is sitting on my desk as an overgrown clock that is rooted with CWM. (I left it in the car-mount stuck to a piece of glass)

As far as I know, the device came with 2.3.5 from the factory. I am not 100% certain though. I tried everything I could find online to unlock the bootloader, but to no avail. Do you think you can point me to a guide on how you unlocked yours?
Ahh, I just logged into this forum today for some odd reason. I bounced down from the HTCU11 to the 10 to try out android 10 and in my moment of nostalgia pulled out the old photon. It sill streams winamp to my bluetooth and I need to resync it to my plex server, but that is indeed actually the first phone i rooted although it had the locked bootloader version due to my expedient install of motorola updates. I remember those days....
Thanks for all the fun times back then and the experimentation that had begun and continues today in many aspects the same but in many different.
