Does Dark Grey variant of Note 3 SD has Yellow screen tint as compared to Gold/Silve? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Hi there,
I want to buy a Redmi Note 3. I liked the Dark Grey variant. But then I saw on MIUI forums that Dark Grey variant has cheap screen, which were used in Note 2 and it got yellowish tint.

So, a question to all the users having Dark Grey variant. Is it true?
And a question to Gold/Silver users. Do you got yellow screen phone by chance.
You can notice the yellow tint by comparing it with another phone.

I have the Dark Grey and screen looks white as white can get, but just like the FP sensor GOODIX vs FPC I am sure they also switch up the LCD panels and I doubt it's color specific.
Mine has a tianma nt35596 panel, I compared whites to my Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (which is known for having one of the best screens), and the xiaomi is actually brighter white

Yup, they're using two screen manufactures in Redmi Note 3. Not sure about their names though. When & from where did you purchase your Note 3? Are you from India? Which variant you got? 16GB or 32GB?
So, they've put different FP sensors as well?! Oh no.
How did you see that your phone has tianma nt35596 panel? What would I do, if want the phone as same panel as you?
Sorry for these several questions. Actually, I want to buy a phone without this screen issue. Any help would be appreciated.

See, even Gold has yellow tint. So, it's not about color. Actually, Xiaomi has put different screens randomly in Note 3.

That user has tianma_nt35596 as well. WTF?!!!
I heard, Xiaomi have put different temp. variants according to phone colors.

I bought mine from china, aliexpress 'xiaomi authorized store', yeah there are two FP sensors the FPC (which works with all the custom firmware like CM13), and the GOODIX which won't work with custom firmware's (might be fixed later if xiaomi releases updated sources), I heard some of the phones that are made in india have problems like gyroscope issues, bad screens and other issues.
to find out what screen is in the phone go to Settings -> About Phone -> Click on Kernel Version 5 times to enter CIT mode, then click 1. Software version
at the very bottom it should say LCM information then the model, you can also find other info here too.
I know xiaomi has a "auto contrast app that's hidden deep within the settings" this might also be effecting peoples colors.

strange, perhaps a small batch of phones had the problem, I've been on xds for awhile and never seen the issue come up, in that thread you posted I also noticed the yellow phone was 2/16gb and the white one was 3/32gb, the MIUI version was different too (6 on yellow, 7 on white, kernels are same version but different hash), or maybe they put cheaper panels in the lower cost phone

Aha! This could be the case. Cheaper screens in 16GB variants.
So anyone here having 16GB variant got yellow (warm) tint on their screens? Just compare the phone with another phone having cooler display.

FYI Xiaomi has used similar displays from 3 different manufacturers according to the abilities
None of them is cheaper den the other
All 3 r of equal quality
The difference in color is because of the manufacturer

Just got Dark Grey RN3 yesterday. The display is neither cold, nor warm. It's neutral.

What are your screen? Truly? or Innolux?

http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/08/28/is-sony-using-two-different-screens-for-the-xperia-c5-ultra/
As we can see here, Hong Kong user faced 2 models of screen and 2 modes of touch panel
Truly got better contrast adjustment, but poor viewing angle
Innolux got poor contrast adjustment, but better viewing angle relative to Truly
how about you? Are you within this 2 models? Is there 3rd screen & panel?
is Sony gonna get this better in the later batch of phone or update? Such as tuning Innoux back to normal contrast

Well my contrast is the best and viewing angle is also the best. I am using obsanity amoled color profile for color correction. ?

I just got mine today. Contrast seems on the lower side but viewing angle is good. From Singapore.
Where's the option to see the screen manufacturer? I can't find it in the service menu..
Innolux LCM got poor contrast adjustment because the color gamut (NTSC) is 70% only.
Spec from Innolux Official Website
I just visited the sony store again to do an exchange for my C5 ultra. I saw a live green one on display and the red colours had turned brown! I tried to play around with the white balance but couldn't save it.. I just hope that if this happen to me, it better happen during the warranty period......
how do u check what display u use?
screen is **** very bad colors
i am shocked

Mine is an innolux too and I got a bit disappointed when I turned it on the first time, you know.. that yellowish tint it's absolutely a turn off, especially switching from Moto X devices then to Z3C (that I dropped and screen popped out) and now C5 Ultra...
... but if you try to calibrate it, add just 68 of blue, my screen is also white and I have to say that to be an Innolux - blacks are black, contrast is good so assuming that all Innolux are the same can be a false statement. I bought mine in a Sony store and when I went to see for some cases and a dock I tried to play with the settings of 2 C5 that were on display, both with Innolux, but 2 different displays. Compared with mine only one of them was having the same blacks and in the other one the yellowish tint was not going away adding 68 of blue.
Yeah, baffled. Probably some are defective and need to be replaced.

You should go to any center/service and give them the phone and tell them iat not your fault and the device is half done. They must give you another new device. In Turkey, most of the people had your issue and they gave their phones to the service. They got their phones like 2 3 weeks later. According to their comments, the service took the old device and gave a new one.(with last update) it happened in a forum called donanim haber. Device is fine and has no problem except firmware. Go give your device sir.

Innolux.
I also have Innolux on my phone, purchased from Wind in Canada. No issues with yellow tint or light leak. Subjectively, and I know the specs say otherwise, it looks better than the screen from my old Xperia Z Ultra.

Hardware is the same, LTE is disabled in firmware.
I got a replacement because the first one failed to read memory card.
This time I got a black one, and the screen looks more even on white (Truly), plus the battery is better.
It's recommended to get black model (all variations) because the hardware is better.

Investigating what display mounts the 6P

Thinking, I concluded that, to clear up the confusion about if the panel is from Note 5, S6, Note 4, the best thing we can do is to put the Nexus 6P under the microscope. And if we can take pics, it would be great.
Has someone a microscope?
There's pictures showing the matrix of Note 4, S5, S6, etc in Phonearena to compare.

The idea is to examine a full white point in the phone, so we can see the matrix.
For example, this is from a S6 Edge+:

Here's what I managed to get with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens at 1:1 with a 5D Mk II. I did it handheld while the phone rested in a phone holder so it might not be fully in focus.
It's a 100% crop of a small part of the picture so you probably need a higher macro ratio to get a closer look. The screen is set at 100% brightness and showing a full white image. It looks like it's the same pixel layout as the S6 edge+ looks like it was set at half brightness.
Google already confirmed it's latest gen samsung panel: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/30/confirmed-nexus-6p-has-latest-gen-samsung-amoled-panel/
Brightness is indeed (much) lower than S6/note 5, not sure why ...

I really appreciate a lot the work you have done. Honestly, thank you.
I investigated and the Note 4 shares the diamond shape of blue and red subpixels, and oval green subpixel with S6 and Note 5. I thought we would see more differences. But your comment about the Nexus 6P panel looks like the one of the S6 Edge+ with half brightness is good!
Hopefully something like a High Brightness Mode is hidden, like in the Nexus 6. If it's latest generation panel, we'll be able to make it brighter without burn-in.
Thank you ever so much, this has been extremely helpful.
Samsung previously never sold any of its latest gen AMOLED panels to any mobile phone manufacturer. Motorola phones from the past couple of years that used AMOLED panels were using those that were 1 or 2 generations behind the ones on Samsung flagships. That was its advantage and it looks like it might have changed its policy with the Nexus 6P.
I don't think it's that simple. Samsung could be selling to Huawei panels that are below the top grade but not bad enough to throw away - they may be using the highest quality ones for their Note 5 and S6 displays but providing those that didn't make the cut to Huawei for a good discount. That explains how some of us might be getting colour bands/shifts in the pink and green regions on our displays.
So I just went through the kernel defconfig to see what LCD panel it selects. It doesnt. I'm not sure yet how it works but I think it just uses a generic driver.
I wonder what's going on here. Did samsung manufacture a special panel for the Nexus 6p ? Or did they use an existing panel but just used some trick to lower max brightness ? In which case we might unlock higher brightness ...
Is there any way to turn the brightness up on the 6P yet? I like being able to increase the saturation with Ex Kernal, but no options for boosting brightness past stock yet. Is pushing brightness past stock even safe to do on the 6P? Or even possible?

AMOLED panels are made from a wafer. They simply use the panels from the centre of the wafer for their flagships and sell the ones from the border which will not be as good (uneven colors, lower brightness, ...).
Knowing that this is a hot topic on*/r/android, I brought up the fact that testing has shown that on the Nexus 6P, its display has a lower maximum brightness and higher display power consumption than seen on the Note 5—key indicators of the AMOLED panel generation—I received knowing acknowledgement. So it turns out that the display panel is the same, but that much like the practice of CPU/SoC binning, there is variation inherent in AMOLED panel fabrication. Here, Google was able to procure the lower binned, yet current-generation displays from Samsung for the Nexus 6P.

Yellowish tint

Hello everyone,
Is anyone facing yellowish tint at bottom of the screen below 10% brightness?
PS - Sorry, this screenshot is not showing it
Yes. I can see the yellowish/greenish tint at the bottom of the screen when the brightness is around 10% on almost any dark/black background. A screenshot can't give the evidence correctly.
I'm not sure if it is a bug, or made to improve readability. But it's so annoying and has no way to turn this 'feature' off. I just want to have a pitch black background on my keyboard
I am using black theme for keyboard so no problem there but it is seen where there is grey color and not pure black. Because amoled tend to turn off pixels when it is pitch black in UI.
Anyone else facing the same problem? So, that we can confirm it's with every handset
I have the same problem at the top left side of the screen
And it's a software problem i hope Samsung send an update to fix this
Thank God! I am not the only one with this issue!!

I thought I was the only one with this problem! I bought a S10 Lite in Flipkart (India), it had a green tint on grey backgrounds below 10% only at top left Side of screen. I returned it and now I got a replacement phone with exact same issue but at the bottom part of screen. Thank you for letting me know that its in every phone. I really hope its a Software issue and they fix it with a Software Update. (btw, I went to Samsung service center and they too confirmed that there will be an update with March Security Patch with fix for this issue, but I didnt really believe him tho.)

Hey my friend please inform us do you receive your phone or not ?
The green tint is a Samsung panel issue and will never get fixed until people start blowing this up and speaking out, in my experience this is not a minority and is actually the majority... I first seen this on my S10 plus UK model and sent it back for a S10 plus Snapdragon and had the same issue... Since then I've personally seen it on 2x note 10 plus devices, standard s10, mi9t, op7t, realmeX2 pro, galaxy tab6, I'm now seeing it on several forums on the S10 lite, a71 and s20s. Many say they don't have this but realistically it's because they don't know how to look for the issue... It's slightly different in every screen and some far worse then others whilst some it's hardly visible.
Very true , got shot of mine pronto and got a 7T no issue with display hear ,[emoji16]

No bro, I am still without my phone
I don't think a screenshot can demonstrate the problem. So here's a video I record to demonstrate the low brightness screen greenish/yellowish tint issue on a grey background.
The screen has a greenish tint/yellowish tint when it's on the 5-10% brightness. The tint also appears when the Adaptive brightness is ON when you're in a low light condition.
The "Apply to Wallpaper toggle" on the Dark mode settings gives no difference.
Maybe many people will not be disturbed by this issue. But I personally prefer to turn my brightness under 10% and have a dark theme. Other than that, the screen is amazing and i love it <3
it is software bug and my phone have same like all have
check this one : https://www.gsmarena.com/latest_sam...s_update_brings_green_tint_fix-news-42808.php
Oneplus New lunch mobile also had same bug
Check this one : https://www.gizchina.com/2020/04/23/oneplus-8-pro-display-facing-green-tint-issues/
Can confirm the same problem on my s10 lite purchased from flipkart!

General Be careful! There are two types of screens!

I bought a mi 11 lite 5G a few days ago, and it's a great phone. On the other hand, I thought the screen was not great, I felt like everything was blurry compared to my old Samsung A5 2016 (also having a 1080p amoled).
After asking around on Reddit, it looks like Xiaomi is using two different screen suppliers, with two different technologies.
The video below explains it perfectly well.
So it is possible to come across a "PenTile" (or diamond) screen, a classic for AMOLED, or else a "RGB Delta" screen.
The problem with the "RGB Delta" is that it is not as sharp as a "PenTile" because of its pixel layout. We can clearly see a drop in terms of definition and display sharpness. It is especially visible on the text (see photo below, Rgb Delta on the right)

I'm really disappointed with Xiaomi, either you get a good screen or a not so good one... I tried to contact the support to have more information, but without more.
thanks for the information! That is unfortunate. Maybe these screens are split along regions? The 780G 5G mi 11 lite comes in China and global versions (former network bands are slightly different in both 4g and 5g). Is yours a global, EU version or the China version? Device name MZB08JXEU 5G EU or M2101K9G 5G Global or M2101K9C 5G China? Am not 100% clear on whether the EU actually differs from the global.

I have the same model, i don't use it right now, but soon. I'll give you my feedback soon
The thing with your A5 (2016) is that the pixel density is a bit higher. Also i remember my dad has this A5 (2016), and I was impressed with the quality of the screen
@fegone My girlfriend, has a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro (with 403 dpi, ~ same as Mi 11 lite) is much sharper than my phone.
I ordered one today. I hope I can spot the display type. I'm gonna send it back if it's not the pentile. I use my phones for 5-6 years so I want the good ****
Hi, I can't see evidence of what display model has my mi 11 lite 5g.
I ordered in mi.com (Spain), special edition (MFF, Mi Fan Festival edition) 8G/128G black.
I compared with my wife mi 9T and mi 11 lite 5g looks equal or better, not worse.
Don't know if i have the good display or simply I can't appreciate it.
@vanpopel With the zoom of the mi9T, it should be possible to take a picture of the screen of the mi 11 lite, and see the pixel structure of it
on my M2101K9G i have a rgb delta, the definition is different than my pixel, but on a daily usage, like 20cm from your eyes, is unnoticable, maybe I have bad eyes.
Anyways, I wll return my device, the speakers are awful, the camera is below average, and the screen is too big for me, I have a pixel 3a... I prefer compact phones.

What are best conditions to take the picture? Black text and white background??
@vanpopel Yes, you can send the picture here
i got an M2101K9G, bought from mistore Germany (distributed from netherlands) and made a picture. it looks somewhat diamond shaped?
@Pseudo12 Nope, it looks like RGB Delta.
Diamond is more noticeable on red color, like this :
I have bad pulse zooming x10
Ahi va otra
@vanpopel, ok it's like me, RGB Delta (there is no "dot" like with PenTile).
So it seems to be very common, well here in Europe...
EDIT: And now I see that my screen is already burned.... (by 1h 1/2 of Waze use, 75% brightness)... wtf?
You can see it at the top and bottom (it's faint but clearly visible IRL)
@Xelycs
I am seeing some reviews on the web of different smartphones and they say pentile matrix resolution when screen is showing blue or red pixels is smaller than RGB, and image in RGB displays is sharper.
I haven't deep knowledge of screen technologies, and I suspect not only pentile or RGB information is enough to measure display quality. I mean, there may be good or bad RGB displays and good or bad pentile ones ¿?.
Is the RGB implementation of our screen so bad? Or it can be considered good display, and pentile excelent display? Or our RGB display is completely trash?

Question MIUI 12.5 Update: Screen looks worse

Hello, I am a Mi 11 Lite 5G user (bought in Spain, from Orange). I have a Tianma Screen and since I updated to MIUI 12.5 (yesterday) the screen looks even worse than before. Instead of dark tones I see big green pixels using my device in dark mode or watching series and movies during night. I have this issue in all color modes (including P3).
I just wanted to open this thread to report it and to know if there more users with this problem. I know at least 3 more users with this problem here in Spain

Another example watching movies:
The smartphone on the top is the Mi 11 Lite 5G, on the middle Poco F3 and on the bottom Oneplus 8
Green tint issues are among OLED screen for a long time, here as reference: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/green-tint-on-screen.4262217/
Maybe Tianma has it even worse. Magnitude may be different between devices and screen.
If it's obvious, can try refund or replacement. Check your country Xiaomi warranty policy though. Sometimes after submitting replacement, even if you didn't get your replaced device, you will not be able to make refund.
@polfmarti I also have pixel clusters where there should normally be black shades. But I already had this problem with Miui 12. I thought it was a software issue, but maybe it's not? Btw i have Tianma display too....

I also had this issue with Miui 12 but with Miui 12.5 I see it more exaggerated. I don't know if it can be solved
This will be the last Xiaomi for me.... I am really disappointed with this phone
Is the same for me. Tianma screen here too. I have the same issue but I don't know if this started with 12.5 update... I think this problem was here before tbh.
Is not only the green tint issue but also a "pixelation" (square artifacts) on dark scenes. They can be seen in movies, images, or even the UI.

It is not pixelation but in line with Black Crush problem that plagued Samsung S9.
I have Tianma panel too and had said black crush problems. But 12.5 seems to have fixed it.
I haven't done a throughout test but LG OLED test on Youtube does not show any symptoms unlike before.
And story continues. WTF Xiaomi, making bad things worse with software? They of course know about the issue and now trying to sort out **** display with software updates. No chance!
I'm in touch with them and answer was kind of "yeah, we know displays are meh" but not straighforward of course. Trying to change mine in UK for device with Huaxing. Will let know if will be succesful.
It's disgraceful to put those displays in Lite version of flaghip phone...!
How i can check the panel type?

Another new thing since the 12.5 update: Blacks are no longer black. They are clearly grey, deep blacks don't exist anymore (except during HDR Youtube videos, which proves that it's a bug again....)
Wtf Xiaomi ?

I fixed this by changing the color profile to p3, I had the exact same issue before.
Its under display settings and I attached screenshots.
Thanks @vomez, it's working... The more time passes, the more I think I'm going to sell this phone
I have about 2 months with a MI 11 Lite 5G, I do not use it yet as a main phone since I have a MI 9 Lite that works excellent, however when comparing the screens side by side, I notice that the screen of the MI 11 Lite 5g in the Backgrounds or contents with whites look yellowish, look in settings, change the color temperature to cool on all of them and it still shows yellowish white colors. Yesterday I received a MI 11 Lite 5g NE and when comparing them side by side the screen of the Mi 11 Lite 5g NE correctly shows the whites, no yellowish, do any of you have the same problem on your Mi 11 Lite 5G?
