Glossy plastic - Sony Xperia X Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

I've had my Mist Blue XC for less than 3 days. I've done nothing but lay it on flat surfaces being very careful with it until a case I ordered arrives. Now I noticed there are a ton of fine scratches on the back of the phone.
Brilliant move choosing to use glossy plastic on this thing, Sony...

Sorry to hear that, what case did you order ( link please) are there any third party cases , beside the original ones ?

Can you please post photos of the scratch? Probably have to use screen protector on both sides. And then use a case

Hard to shoot the scratches. They are really fine scratches on the gloss coat I assume.
I ordered this cheap case on Amazon until something better comes out.

Pictures have been updated on the item now. Doesn't look like the previously advertised case (top and bottom edges are open). I ordered one, and I'm not impressed the item changed.

Yeah, Not happy they changed the images but it will do until something better comes out.

yeah... it does seem to scratch rather a bit too easily. At least (so far on mine) the screen doesn't have the same scratchability as the back:fingers-crossed: . Maybe sony will release some carnauba based polish when support folks start suggesting that the little fine scratches will just buff out...

so anyone could get a glass panel for the back of this phone? anything to put there might do the job actually

Glossy plastic is highly underrated. It looks good and is light and cheap. Won't shatter like glass, less slippery than metal, and the inevitable scratches are...quickly and cheaply repaired to bring the surface to like new condition. How? take a minute to apply a little wax polish with a soft cloth and rub until dry.
I have used Novus Fine Scratch Remover (#2), but I would think car wax would work just as well. I removed some marred patches from when I dropped the phone on hardwood floor and it skidded a bit, and not only did those patches disappear, but so did the fine scratches.
I don't think this would be wise for the screen, however, as it would probably harm the oleophobic coating.

This is why I put stickers on the back (and eventually sides) to protect the phone, and also make it less slippery in my hands, you can see some photos here:

Protection shield recommendation

Hi all,
searching for an invisible, thin protection film for my Topaz I found this website
http://www.gadgetshieldz.com/htc-to...s-screen-protectors-covers-cases-shields.html
It is exactly the same shield you might know from other manufacturers, but look at the price: 6.99 and free shipping included!
To make it short: Delivery was fast, the product is excellent (I have one of those expensive ones on my iPod so I can compare), and the installation is very easy. They even have an explaining video on their website.
I can recommend this product to everyone.

Hehe.. the fact that they refund to whoever who posts reviews abt them online...
wondering if these reviews are genuine or not.
No offence ottoben.. I'm just thinking out loud. I got my Shieldz too.. Pics here:

It's ok to me to say what you think. But I really think their product is as good as the much more expensive ones and that's what I wanted to share. BTW I dit not apply for the refund...
I have these too, and have found them excellent, however, the screen protector part is a little too "rubbery" for my taste - I feel that my fingers don't slide about as easily on the screen, therefore, I use the gadget shieldz for back and sides of the device and the standard HTC screen protector on the front - gives me best of both worlds IMHO
Ordered now - lets see when it turns up and if it's any better than the InvisibleShield...(that was rubbish tbh)

Yup.. exactly. I tested my friend's Cruise too, with the screen covered with it too. Totally unacceptable for me on the screen. Using a stylus makes it much worse.. so I applied it on the back only.
My friend's Cruise apparently had Invisible Shield.. and I think the rubbery-ness is about the same. I do however feel that GadgetShieldz has less wavy effect, thus, it looks better
Price-wise.. forget IS. Ya don't need the fancy packaging, spray bottle or a card. GS is worthit.

After seeing Mask post from another thread on the matt cover, i had order and using gadget shieldz now...
I had Invisiable shield on my previous Diamond 1.
Overall, i feel gadget shield is thinner than Invisiable Shield.... better feel, less rubbery....
but on gadget shield seems easier to be srcatch or stretch...
i had some stretch mark when i try hard to push the air bubbles.
This stretch marks is ugly as it is on the front screen area....
Just have to be extra careful during application of the shield
I also got the gadget shield, but my main problem is that it is about 2mm off on all sides. So I have small gaps between the pieces. Does invisible shield have the same problem?

You mean 2mm smaller than the device? I though that's normal..
I only applied at the back, so it's not a problem for me..
so does anyone who has tried out invisibleshield have problems with it not fitting perfectly because if it doesn't have problems I might buy one.
Gadgetshieldz
Hi all,
Just got my Gadgetshieldz this morning. The instructions are pretty good, easy to follow. However, for the pieces that fold over the sides, they don't stick well. The plastic is too rigid and won't fold and stick. I ended up with only the front screen and the backing done. I couldn't be bothered with the sides as they were too fiddly and weren't a perfect fit anyway. The opening near the speaker on the right wouldn't stick properly and am currently sitting hte phone on its side hoping that portion would stick when its dry. Overall, Gadgetshieldz looks like a good cheaper alternative to Invisible shield, (I tried tearing apart the smaller strips and they were quite robust) but usage on the diamond is really average. From what the others have said, I will most likely be tearing off the screen protector and buying another replacement if there is too much traction. Will make another post when it dries.
Cheers.

I concur on this one. I just installed Gadgetshieldz on the weekend. The battery cover portion has unsightly gaps at the top. The strips that are meant for the sides are way short and I didn't even bother applying them. Am probably gonna strip off the protection sheet and stick to a soft plastic case. They are a bit chunkier but more rigid than the silicone versions.
To anyone who gets air bubbles under screen protectors; URDOINITRONG.
Ensure the surface of both the device and the protector are COMPLETELY dust free; The smallest particle of dust, fluff, or hair will make an air bubble a good 3 or 4mm in diameter.
Other than that, ensure the edges line up straight and roll down from one side to the other. Seempulz!
I'd recommend GadgetShieldz.com.
£3.00 delivered and does the job well.

I bought one as well and fits perfectly. But installation made me crazy some pieces are too small for my fingers
Gadgetshieldz is looking like a great option to me..Ordering one now..Will see how it goes.

Xperia P - Rock Quicksand case review

I found this review of the Nilkin case for the Xperia P helpful, and wanted to give back by posting a review of my own. Had been pretty keen on the Nilkin case myself, but after reading the reports of the corners cracking, I went looking for another quality option and ended up with a Rock Quicksand. This is a "dark grey" model I bought from Casesss.com.
Note the white specks that appear on the case are bits of dust/fluff that aren't part of the case surface - sorry for overlooking these but they didn't look that visible while taking the pics, and it'd be too much of a pain setting up my tripod and lighting again to redo them nicely with my crappy camera. Also note the pics convey a sort of "white speckliness" overall which is not how it looks in person - IMO, the case looks better than it appears in the pics.
First, the positives:
- The material is really nice. It looks and feels classier than silicone or textured plastic.
- With moist/sweaty hands, the case provides more grip than the smooth metal surfaces of the phone.
- It allows the phone to sit more securely on your lap or a nearby surface (e.g. train/bus seat) with less fear of it sliding off and onto the floor.
- The cutouts are accurate, and there's plenty of clearance left around the headphone jack.
And the cons/caveats:
- With dry fingers, the material is actually less grippy than the phone's smooth metal surfaces.
- Some reviews of Rock Quicksand cases for other phones suggested the material doesn't grip pocket liners - I disagree. It's not a problem with big/loose pockets on cotton pants, but in more constricted front jeans pockets, it will tend to pull out the pocket liner when removing the phone. Still, it's not as bad as silicone in this respect, and doesn't retain nearly as much fluff/dust as silicone.
- The cutout for the transparent bar is much smaller than one on the Nilkin case. This probably increases the case's strength but doesn't look as cool.
- The buttons are a bit harder to press than without the case, but this seems unavoidable - the cutouts appear as non-intrusive as is possible for this style of case.
Overall, I'm very happy with the case for the purpose of providing extra grip in the situations I most need it and providing some protection, without making the phone look ugly. Would be happy to answer any questions in case I missed anything.
I am also using this product. Very good case.

The thin band over the camera volume keys power sim speaker.. tend to brake soon... that's the only thing i don't like... and its very often due to the case's rigid body..
Else i highly recommend it... I am currently using an Soft Silicon-Jelly Case.. for an local manufacture..

Following up with something I just observed today: at the bottom right corner, the "sand" material has rubbed off, leaving a shiny surface. I've been using the case for about a month and I'm not sure when this occurred. That corner isn't exposed to repeated friction against anything, so it seems as though a one-off contact with something probably caused it.

I use this case and this appears to be a problem that arises over time. I keep my phone in my pocket and over two months the edges have lost a lot of sand coating. It doesn't affect the usability of the case but can look pretty ugly. I can't take a photo now but will post one soon.
Another notable thing about this case is that if you have a creaky bottom cap from removing the cap too much, this case will hold the cap securely in place and stop the creaking.
EDIT: Here are some photos of the quicksand peeling. The lighting isn't great but you can see it clearly enough.

uhm very bad....did you go tu the beach or something???
I used to use this case and yes, it's beautiful at first but after a long time of using, it become ugly and i must change another one =.=
i wish i can find one of those in Egypt ,
I also got one of this case but mine is purple and the rubber of some place on the casing have lost but between it's a nice case I'm happy with it.
After just over three months use, I can report the "sand" has now rubbed off the rear corner adjacent to the one I pictured on the previous page (that one hasn't gotten any worse since the picture was taken). The three other front corners also show the same sort of wear, but smaller. The edges and larger surfaces show no signs of wear.
In my case, it seems most likely the wear is being caused simply by the phone rubbing against the pocket liner when in my jeans/jacket pocket, so it's not a very durable surface. With just the corners worn, mine still looks classier overall than other cases and I'd just as soon choose it again over the alternatives, but I can't recommend it to those whose phones are treated less softly than mine, as it may end up looking like crap in a short period.
Very usefull case it is..:good: protects the device very well....
I have a quicksand case for my Xperia Sola. I just got it a few months back and so far I'm quite happy with it. The overall build quality seems to be very robust. However on two corners the rubber starts to come off, but that doesn't really bother me as long my phone is save
i haven't use case for a yeah and now my XP look like old phone :cyclops:
is the available for xperia go?

Looking for Glass screen protector suggestion or even a normal one if that is better

Since owners have had the phone a for a bit longer now, I would like some feedback on those screen protector choices you have made.
Basically what I want is the common things:
*As invisible as possible.
*Smooth feeling to the touch is preferred.
*easy to apply is a plus
*I prefer to not remove the sony one already there.
So I was looking at M.glass, other ebay glass ones and then my usual choices like Zagg HD the case friendly version for the plasticky ones.
So what is working out for you guys?
I bought one off of ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/261323055474?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649. It feels nice when you put it on. I got something stuck under it though so if you are installing one make sure your phone is perfectly clean. I like the feel of it better than the normal screen. It was hard to install well for me but probably not as hard as I made it out to be. I had it perfect but removed it to get the thing from under it out and that is where things went wrong.
Thats my problem too when installing myself..always some dust gets in somehow. I am thinking on trying to install inside the bath tub or something after running the how water for like 10 minutes to see if that helps...seriously lol

i have the Armorz Stealth Extreme R on mine. a bit on the pricey side but i love it. I also have one of the ebay ones for the back glass. both were put on over the stock sony screen protectors. on the back piece, i actually soaked the back of the screen with a spray bottle before applying it. It was a pain in the ass pressing out all the bubbles, but it looks flawless after a bit of elbow grease.
I have Glass-M front+back for mine and I absolutely love it. (Removed factory ASF as well). My notes
* It is really smooth. Like freshly made toffee it is so smooth it feels faintly greasy (but it is not). On an almost completely flat table the phone will slowly slide across the surface by itself due to a slope you can't see (be careful)
* I believe touch sensitivity is improved. Finicky DPI sliders in Paranoid Android setups give me no trouble now - before jumping 239,243,241 when I really want 240 dpi exactly. Pencil also works perfectly as a stylus.
* I believe screen brightness and clarity are improved. Subjective and probably due to removal of the ASF (and its invisible tiny scratches)
* Extra glass makes the phone a bit thicker but also much stiffer and I liked this. I also have a Z1 and I miss how solid that phone felt in my hand. Ultra always felt a bit too flimsy (bendy). I also had to widen the slot on my DK30 (sandpaper glued to a flat stick aka big emory board)
* Getting alignment correct is tricky - glass-M slightly smaller than the phone screen edges. Mine went on crooked but I can live with that.
* No dust or bubbles in mine. Used the shower trick of old school film photographers. Long hot steamy shower will effectively clean the room of even tiny dust particles.
* Removing the ASF is a truly harrowing experience (see the other thread). Halfway through you *will* have an "Oh God what have I done" moment. Still totally worth it.
Hope my ramble helps someone. In summary really happy with the Glass-M. :good:

Haha yeah I took it off and it made it way worse... ended up being a waste of money which has been happening a lot since my phone had been sent back for repair. I have wasted so much money. But yeah I bought another one and got it a couple of days ago but have not opened it. I will install it right when my phone gets back.
So when you guys go dual glass (front and back I mean) do you just carry it without a case? I mean, when I remove mine from the case it just feels SOOOO good to hold, like the case makes it feel not as ergonomic even though you will think is just one flat object

Glass-M Front+Back and I carry mine "au naturel". Four weeks of sliding in and out of pocket + keys, coins, cig. lighter etc with no marring or scratches. Seriously it feels way better in my hand than the factory finish: smoother, bit thicker (2x 0.25mm glass + adhesives is a lot on a 6.5mm phone), and far more solid. Absolutely love its handling after placing the extra glass.
Downsides are metal sides will eventually pick up scratches and dents and also I don't like the proximity sensor cutout: messes with the Sony design and makes it look like everybody else's iPhone/Samsung/whatever with slots cut into the front of the phone. I don't believe the cutout is necessary for that sensor to work. (could be wrong about that)

Ah you guys are going to make me join the nudist colony!
Well I got too many cases already on the way but they will live in the car to be used when required, but for the most part I love the feel of it naked....and we are still talking about phones just before someone locks the thread
Does the glass go all the way to the edges of the phone? Like if I use one of those cases that go just above the screen (if those will even fit which I doubt) will it make the glass come off?
I guess I should just not use a case but gosh I bought a couple of nice ones already LOL

Well, I guess I use it without a case at home and at work right now anyway since with my case it wont fit on the DK30 but still, if I were to use a single cable, that case wouldnt let me charge.

yeah maybe I bought cases for decoration now LOL We shall see.
I just thought of one possible issue if I get the Glass-M vs getting a single one for the screen only....I want to get one of those extended batteries case combinations.
So if I get that, I am pretty sure it wont fit with the Glass-M but maybe it will fit if I only get one glass for the front?
I'm getting my glass-m protectors today. I'll post my opinion tomorrow some time
Cool!
I got one of the front glass only protectors from ebay. Still waiting for it to arrive to see if I can deal with it.
I should have gotten the Glass M but I dont feel like modding the DK30 which I will probably have to do anyway

Got my Glass-M protector yesterday put it on this morning. It works great. Its' pretty comparable to the spigen tr I had on my S4 maybe a littler thinner. It includes the front and back glass protectors, rear camera cutout was perfect. The front appears to cover the camera. There is a cutout for something to the left of the camera but I'm not really sure why. Maybe I am misunderstanding the layout? Luckily it laid down well enough that its not causing any distortiong.
It actually feels nicer and seems more fingerprint resistant than the stock bare screen with its ASF film. It's an expensive kit but considering both front and rear protectors are glass it seems like its worth the money to me.
Shipping was also really fast considering it came from hong kong....about 5 days.
So I ended up trying this glass one:
Protector
The feeling and quality of the image is so pristine compared to my previous regular plastic like protector!
I did have to sand paper the DK30 a bit to make it fit but all is good. I still can use all my cases if needed and I left the plastic protector for the back part.
So overall, I think I will keep this one because with the dual Glass M ones, I dont think my cases will work nor the Charging case combo I want.
With the size of this phone and the Explosion proof glass...I feel like Captain America now

how to protect camera ?

Ok here is the deal.
I normally use a gel case on my phones. There fit the phones well and cover everything that needs to be.
But they make the phone a lil bit thicker and hide the phone. Normally I get a phone and want to see it for itself.
Well I brought a metal bumper and it looks nice.
But I see that the camera sticks out and touchs when sitting it down.
My girl says that the camera screen is glass and won't break or scratch, but I still like for the phone to not sit on it.
So I am wondering if there is anything I can put around the camera to protected.
I was thinking of something like a form pad so the camera wouldn't touch but idk.
I know some will say get one of the charger back but then it makes the phone thick and defeats the point.
Whole new lens cover assembly cost about $6 on e-bay and shouldn't be difficult to DIY, but you could get some small piece of thick one sided foam tape, cut it to shape and stick around the cam, why not. If it gets dirty or comes off, make new one. Personally I have not seen anything like that commercially, wait, actually there is lens mount you can glue around cam, it comes with small tele lens that you can attach on top.

Yea I saw the replacements on eBay for like $10ship and I'm a tech person so I can replace it no problem.
And I didn't thing about the lens. I know they have a metal ring.
I'll check into everything.
Thanx.
I have a metal bumper also. I had an extra home button sticker that I sticked near the camera lens. Now when I lay flat down it doesn't lay on the camera lens.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
I use skinomi clear skin. They include a skin for the bottom half of the camera. When my phone is laying flat the lens doesn't touch. As a bonus since you're using a metal bumper, the side skins can act as an all around protection between the bumper and the chrome trim. Much better than what the bumper comes with. But you will probably need to remove the ones on the bumper first as it will become too thick and the bumper won't fit properly.

I am updated to Kitkat, unrooted. so s-view no work for me. Thats why I took the front flap of my white spigen slim armor view out, and let the back side on on white note3 ... gives it some kind of a z10-ish look.
coming back to the point, my case does the job well, apart from protecting the sides from scratches, by keeping the camera lens from having contact when lying flat. well, quite a hefty investment if you want to protect your lens only. but since I already purchased it, it does the job decently, and I dont find it that much of bulky. anyhow, bulky or not, to me - this is a question of habit. i mean, now that I look and take a grasp of my old i9100, it seems very small now, which wasnt the case some months back my two cents

Yea i got a normal gel case for the phone. I have always use those without problems but i got a bumper for the note 3. It just feels better, so trying to keep the phone slim.
I thought about putting a dot of hot glue somewhere around it to lift it up. But i just didnt wanna do that to a new phone.
I want a square that would fit right around the camera and stick to the back plate.
Ill keep looking

Ringke Fusion Crystal for Xperia Z5 Premium

Bought the fusion crystal case from Ringke:
GOOD:
- Completely transparent to show off Z5P's sexy back
- Grip is pretty solid
- Caps for both the headphone jack and the USB port provides additional protection for when you have that occasional dip in the pool.
- Looks premium; doesn't look cheap
- Has these four little bumpers at the back to prevent the case from being scratched when put on a flat surface
- Volume rocker and power rubbers can be easily pressed
- Scratch-resistant (so far)
- Comes with free screen protectors for both front and back
BAD:
- Fingerprint magnet (so you need to wash it after a hard day's use)
How is that and where did you get it from?
I have this one as well. Ordered from Amazon. Took forever to arrive, I think it is just becoming available. Very happy with it. Really zero complaints. Came with front and rear PET screen cover that work nicely to protect the back (didn't use it on the front, already had another screen protector). The insert said this was to prevent visual artifacts. It's a nice bonus.

didn't use the screen protectors as i also already have my front screen protector and i don't want to cover the glass effect at the back. the back protector was matte so it covers the mirror back and i've always used the back as a mirror.
when i put on the back protector is clear as i can still see the mirror, after removing the top layer sticker which is part (2) my back protector goes matte. i suddenly feel so disappointed. the matte back looks nice but i still prefer the mirror back. im struggling should i remove the back protector as it is a very good quality and when i stick it on theres very little bubble and easy to take out those bubble.

Really? The back tempered glass of Rignke removes the glass effect in the back side?
U should test with another screen protector like Nillkin or Rhidon
I also have this case. My Chrome z5p looks gorgeous in this. Quality
Transparent with 1 year

Hi everyone, I am using Ringke Fusion Smoke Black for my Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. I have selected smoke black after reading some online reviews & some fitting issue, as after some time clear one gets yellowing. I am happy with smoke black.
ill be getting the smoked black one in the mail soon will report back with a small review
do this case makes the phone a lot hotter ?

No it does not make the phone hotter
Too thick for my taste...
Sent from my Xperia Z5 Premium!
Got a scratch 1st day... And I have a too big gap at the back around the cam so dust comes in between the case and the phone. Annoying on a black phone... Good fit besides that

No it doesn't. I am using a Ringke case with the back screen protector now and it's a perfect mirror.
It's not actually a tempered glass screen protector it's a very thin layer that (supposedly) prevents a rainbow effect occurring if you use the Ringke case - but of course it also provides some protection as well.
No idea what this person did ... maybe they somehow forgot to remove the protective packaging?

Got mine yesterday, smoke black, and my pone looks great. You have to use the back cover and everything will work and look as intended. Good qualiy case but a bit pricy
This is the best case for z5p. Its not over protected, but just enough. Also fits perfect.
Huge fan of Ringke Fusion cases in general, as I used them on few of my past phones. I will go as far as saying this is probably the best case of this clear/hybrid type in general, beating even the Spigen Ultra Hybrid which is quite hyped case. I find Ringe Fusion extremely precisely built, with perfect cutouts, and also the button cover sections are very easy to press, and you perfectly feel the "click" underneath. One more thing I like, is that the surface is so gentle to wipe, and not sticky at all, like some kind of oleophobic coating for plastic is there. I'm using the smoke black version on my Z5P, and I love it, along with matt protector for back side which takes away some of the mirror effect, but also reduces smudges and dust visibility.
