Battery life is great - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm really impressed by the battery on the A7. I've had 3.5 hours of sot and 20% left even after caning it with DS Audio, 4 hours of internet radio, 50 photos plus editing and lots of surfing.
Doze is extraordinary. Check out last night's battery consumption (I really must get to bed earlier).

Best battery life on a phone that I've had so far.....Well, since smartphones. I had some flip phones that could last a week.

It seems to be a bit better than the Nexus 6P I came from. Definitely not as good as the Oneplus One, much better than the Moto X Pure.

The main thing I've noticed is that this phone doesn't get excessively hot which seems to kill the battery very fast (both issues I've had with almost every smartphone owned: Nexus 6p and Oneplus One included). Apps that use GPS, camera use, gaming etc don't seem to get the phone as hot and this seems to correlate with better battery life under use. The only time I feel the phone warming up is if I'm using the Quickcharge charger while doing something else. It's barely warm though.
If I babied my Oneplus One (Sultans ROM) I managed to get 8 hours SOT which was crazy but it didn't charge the way the Axon 7 does and it certainly wouldn't have coped with the stress I'm putting on the Axon 7. I remember things like constant GPS + Spotify + Bluetooth would mean my Oneplus One wouldn't be able to charge as fast as the battery was being drawn. Not an issue at all with the Axon 7.

I agree on all points. This is one of the coolest running phones I've ever used. Only thing I've done that creates noticeable heat other than charging is +30 minute phone calls on Bluetooth in car. And it charges unbelievably fast. Very happy!

Got ,5 and a half hours yesterday. I honestly average 5 hours. Battery life has improved significantly with this smart power voodoo on. It doesn't affect performance unlike it does on tw.
I notice more apps are closed in background when I have smart power on.. Like I'll be able to have about 5-10 apps open with smart power on.. But 15-25 with it off.
I get an extra hour sot with smart power on.
And I took quite a few pictures that day.. Totally thought I was going to toast my battery.. But it held up better than any of my samsung devices..

The Axon ZTE 7 A2017 has the most smart power!!! I dont have to worry for the whole day charging my Monster!!!

I agree with all the comments here the battery is really good, pair with fast charging if necessary is a winner !!!!

Same here I'm enjoying the battery life on this bad boy!

I would also say it's not too bad.. still 25% remaining after 5h DOT

Agree! On at 6:30 am and still at 86% - light use. 1 phone call, a few texts and 10 or so minutes checking the news. My note would have been 70-75% by midday with about the same use. Power save mode on both phones. Very happy with this phone.

I started this thread and I'm still pretty happy with the battery life but this evening I noticed the phone was a bit hot. First time I've noticed that. It drained from 45% to shutdown in 10 minutes. This is what my Oneplus One used to do. How can the same sh*t happen to the same guy twice?

Sounds like you've got a rogue app in three background that's forcing your CPU to max out and keeping it there even when not in use. There were a couple kernels on the oneplus one (including stock) with bugs like that, but it's not a kernel issue with the axon because otherwise others would have seen this. I'm betting it's a bad app.

I had just installed Kayak. Battery back up now. I'll see if I can reproduce the issue.

I cannot see the usage of apps. Any solution? I also can't see it in the system battery settings.

My buddy has this phone and literally flawless. i mean it works. it lasts. its powerful. has amazing SQ. and im over here with a friggin note 7 barely squeezing 16 hours out of it with3-4 hours DOT/SOT.
Not to mention XDA and everyone gets it wrong. its a 3250mah battery not a 3140mah

I use spotify or pandora via BT. we drove the same distance. same time etc. i lost 17% he lost 5%. both were fresh rebooted and waited 10 minutes. closed all apps and screen NOT in use. no wifi no nfc no nothing.

Can't wait for the battery life to further improve with android 7.1 and maybe even eventually a custom kernel

I'm getting minimum 6hrs of screen on time and i'm very satosfied with this performance

Stock battery life is terrible

Wow, just got my G2 on Friday night, and yesterday I was sitting around the house on WiFi all day, playing with it, I got maybe 12 hours out of it, before it was down in the teens.
Last night I charged it fully, woke up, unplugged the phone 100% battery, now 2 hours later it's down to 89%, and all I did was surf XDA and some websites for maybe 20 minutes all on WiFi.
I need to root this thing, and install CleanROM, and debloat this beast, because with a 3,000mAh battery and Snapdragon 800, I expect way way better battery life.. I am looking for Note 2 battery life, that thing could go 36 hours without sneezing.
Is it the ton of bloatware on the phone from ATT + LG killing the battery ? I am shocked at how much bloat this phone has, it's over the top with bull**** apps I never want on here, pretty ridiculous.
If you had taken the 2 minutes it took for you to write up this rant and look for the battery thread you would have seen the G2 has amazing battery life. You are obviously doing something wrong.
Give it some time to settle before deciding anything. Mine actually took three-four days and some reboots before it calmed down, and now I have about twice the battery stamina compared to HTC One (which I threw in the dumpster btw) .
Could be hardware issues. I had my G2 for a week now, and I tell you what the battery is amazing. I can easily get 4-5 hours of screen on time with 24+ hours battery life, and that's with stock. all sync (fb, whatsapp, twitter) with a few tweaks. I am coming from Nexus 4 and very impressed because with G2 I literally have a double battery life.
And also G2 is very fast charging. Only take 2 hours to charge from 10 - 100%. That's amazing!
My battery is getting better every day. Yesterday I got 14 hours of use, 5 1/2 hours screen on time, and an estimated 2 1/2 hours to go at 15%. Definitely the best so far. With more tweaks, I'm wondering how much I can get today.

I had some bad battery life initially. I found the biggest culprit of battery drain in my case was CarrierIQ. After rooting the phone and disabling the CIQ, my battery life has been great. It goes 24+ hours easily and it seems it can run 40+ hours though I haven't tried it.

same thing happened to me. First few days it was great then battery sucked. Disabled the CIQ with system tuner and I get 2 days and 5 hours screen time and still usually have 30% left
The battery life is love and hate on this phone for me. The love part is the battery life on this phone is great. The hate part is you have to turn off a lot of things to get that great battery life.
I've never had to turn this many things off to get good battery life on any other phones that I've had. I have to completely turn off anything location related which is a big bummer for me. I always like to have a clock/weather widget on my home screen but it never updates with all of the stuff that I have to turn off.
It's one of the few reasons why I'm moving to a Note 3. But when you heavily tweak the system, you can get fantastic battery life out of this phone. Good luck!

if you only turn off the google apps location settings and keep the app location settings on you should still see good battery. I use the stock weather clock widget and it updates just fine with those settings

yet another topic's title that would detract would be buyers.
This phone has the best battery life of any phone I have ever had, stock. Even better than the Note series. Clearly user error
Battery life issues are so variable between two use scenarios it's like comparing apples and oranges. As others have said, battery life is pretty damn amazing for this phone.
Post some results from GSam battery monitor or wake lock detector to help you sort it all out.

I am still running stock, not rooted or ROM'd yet. Right now I am at 8h 29m total usage off a 100% charge this morning. Current battery life is already down to 35%, and only 2h 49m On Screen Time, and I have been on WiFi all day. I have GPS off, sync off, no e-mail or Facebook stuff installed yet.
Might as well give you a fast screen shot of mine
People with great battery life vs those with poor. Do you think its mainly settings and a good ROM or root with bloat deleted ?
Or is it hardware related ? Bad phones from factory shipping with damaged batteries or hardware ?
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
Battery so poor, I might return my G2 for a Galaxy S4 instead, for the removable battery.
Just shocked I'm barely getting any better battery life than my Nexus 4, which got 4h On Screen time, and over all only 12 hours usage
Do I have a bad phone ? Or just stock is screwed up and I should factory reset, or better yet, root and install CleanROM ?

Nougat Battery Life

Okay, I have seen a lot of people having issues with their battery life. This is a couple things that I have discovered and this has been checked with 2 other A7's.
First is wipe your Cache Partition. If you haven't done this. Please do as it helps drastically.
Second, some say it take 2-5 charging cycles to straighten out. As I charge my phone every night because I use mine phone a lot. 2-5 charging cycles is not it. I prefer 2-5 days of use and charging. This is for any device I have ever had. This also includes the tank of all phones, the Nokia 5160.
Third is Dolby. Yes it is nice. 4 Day test -20% battery over 7 hours of use average. This is why I don't use it unless I am in the car plugged into the car charger or wall charger. This is only true when using Dolby. Battery drain from stock music app with Dolby off to Poweramp (what I use) appear to be the same me.
Forth is SYNC. I don't know how many people use it but I saw between 10%-25% battery drop over 16 hours with it on. The reason for the swing is Cell Data vs WiFi. Wifi uses more because it updates more. The update frequency seems to be every 15 mins on WiFi vs ever hour on Cell Data. This battery drop was not seen by me in MM. I grabbed one of my other phones that is on Nougat and it has the same issue. So that is not a phone issues. That is a Nougat issues.
Fifth, now this one caught me a little weird. The power saver that everyone hates it seems like. Turn your power saver to Performance. Run it like that for 2-6 hours. If yours worked like mine. You will see no change in battery life during this time. Then switch it back to Smart power-save. And now watch your battery life increase. This one I cannot confirm on MM. But my battery increased by 25% by doing this.
Sixth and this one is important, Clear All Apps. Yes they load slower when you clear them out. But apps like Snapchat, Facebook, basically any social media, camera, are going to eat battery. This is known by many but often forgotten. I forget to clear all still. See if it helps you.
Seven, ZTE Locker, It is fun to play with but will drain fast the moment you get on WiFi. It will look for all the lockscreen wallpapers.
Now these are what I found out with the way that I use my A7. I know everyone uses their phone differently. What I call "All Day Battery Life" is 6 am to 10 pm. During this stretch of time I could be using my phone up to 13 hours of that. Very few phones can last on a single charge the way I use my phone. A7 is one that beats out the rest. My battery life went from 13% at 10pm to 39% at 10 pm. And it continues to get better everyday. Also this my be a joke but it worked for a Moto G4 and at OP3T. If you have a day where your battery just seems to fall fast. I mean like you are not going to get 6 hours out of it. Find a 5v 2 amp charger and plug in for like 10 mins. Battery fall goes away. It cannot be the factory quick charger either. I hope this little bit helps some of you guys out.
Thanks for this info!
Just an observation I've noticed since having this phone for almost 6 months.
When I use my older Samsung charger (slow charge), my battery seems to die off quicker. If I charge with the stock charger, the battery seems to last longer.
Right now I have not noticed it dying off faster. But I will keep an eye out for it. So far I have not had any fast drain battery days with mine A7 yet. I use the term "yet" because it is going to happen. I have not own a phone that has never had it. Just glad I can help.

I saw this drain you are talking on my Nokia, Blu, and Samsung 1 amp chargers. I have not seen it yet on my Asus or Samsung 2 amp chargers. It is really noticable on the Blu charger. I am going to put my chargers on a test rig this weekend and see if the amp draw to the phone is causing a voltage drop in the charger and cause them to not charge right.
We should not have these issues these days. My Sony Z3 has no issues doing 1.5 days without using battery saver. My Windows 640xl will go 2 days no problem. I don't understand why manufactures can't figure out battery life. I love the Axon7 but its the thirstiest phone I have ever owned.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a try.

I can't speak for Sony as the last one I owned was the Experia Play. I had the Lumia 640 XL though. I never got over 20 hours on a single charge. Battery Life is also tied to how a user uses the phone. My father gets 3 days on his OP3T. He also doesn't use it as much as I do. When I only use my Axon for calls and sms. I get 6 days on a charge. But for me that is not real world life. As a thirsty phone, I just don't see it with mine. The other two guys here that have one as well. They get 2 and 3 days on a charge. I know some people are having battery issues. Some are having charging issues with slow chargers. I saw it happen with a few of my slow chargers as well. I hope that my suggestions work out for you. I have been looking at other things to try to see if they help. That is the beauty of having two more Axon's in the area. Right now I have a non-battery annoying issue that I am trying to work through.
I am also updating the OP for another that I found. ZTE Locker.

Just purchased a 6p

I dropped my OP3 the other day and cracking the screen but... Was not too upset as I have ALWAYS wanted a 6P AND i dine just that. Snatched up a clean one off swappa.
Can't wait...
Bad idea bro ? I mean, it's a nice phone and all but the performance is not that good and bad battery, degrading too fast, dying too quick and early shutdowns. Like mine is shutting down sometimes at 30%... My phone is Really useless ATM.

How common is the bootloop problem?
I just hope I don't get that bootloop problem I been reading about. I'm not out much and need a phone quick.. I spent 140 so I'm not out much. Trying to decide if I want to go Pixel or OnePlus for my next device.

I've had my 6P for 2 years and it hasn't boot looped on me yet. Battery performance is comparable to the day I got it with no early shutdowns (yet), but I always do everything I can to extend the life of the batteries in my phones such as:
- Use a 1 amp charger (no fast charging ever)
- Only charge while the phone is off
- Never use the phone while charging or when the processor/battery is hot
- Avoid charging the phone too often. Try to only charge once a day at most and don't leave the charger plugged in
- Don't let the battery get below 20%
- If using the phone for gaming, stop and give the phone a break if the processor/battery start to get too hot
- More I'm forgetting that can probably be found with a quick Google search
These battery "habits" have been successful in extending the usable life of the batteries in my Note 3, Note 4, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P. I use a kernel manager like ElementalX Kernel Manager to display the CPU and battery temperatures in the notification area so I can keep an eye on them and stop using the phone if it begins to get too hot.
I pretty much only use my phone for texting, calls, and browsing the internet (no gaming or anything that really puts a lot of stress on it), so that's probably why mine hasn't died yet.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Google Pixel 3a before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Yes it's the 3a. I think i could get more SOT without gaming.
From full charge to zero, I could get about 10hrs of screentime consecutively browsing, but that's not how I use my phone. In 48hrs of 'normal usage' I get about 5hrs of screentime.
I do about 3-6 hours of BT audio streaming daily which is why there is a larger than normal screen off usage. Still nice average SOT. I have so many sessions because I try to keep my battery between 50 and 80% for longevity.
I get 8 good hours.
What does Android 10 Battery say? Screen usage since full charge? Also Full charge lasts about???
Mine says 1 day 11 hours of typical usage. I always charge at night so it has rarely if ever run out.

the app usage of 66% is a clue. maybe you got some crazy app eating up battery. if you have bluetooth and/or wifi scanning on continuously that can drain a bit. gsam can be setup to show which app is using most by doing the adb command. just select apps for the details if you have not already.

Here we are after factory reset and flashing the latest OTA from
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Still can't hit 4 hrs SOT. Not once. I really don't know what to do at this point. Incredibly frustrating with everyone else on this thread having MUCH better results.
GSAM is showing some pretty beefy wakelocks on that "RemoteSoundTriggerDetection" and "*alarm*", ActivityManager-Sleep, etc.
I bought it from Best Buy. Should I go up there and see if they'll replace (highly doubt it) ? Maybe flash a custom kernel?
screen on time is a function of what a person normally does with a phone. one way to get high screen on time is you could set display intensity to 25% and timeout to 30 min. if you need that number to be higher. just let the screen be on as much as possible. when you first got it did you fully charge it then fully discharge it then fully charge again? screen on time is about the last metric i ever think about. i don't understand at all why it's so important. i'd be willing to bet some users set intensity to 20% and time out to 30 min or always on and do very little else then they get s.o.t. of 8-9 hrs or higher and think it's great when it's a joke. that's the way i look at it anyway.

Not sure if you're replying to me but I'll answer anyway. Yes I fully charged it then fully discharged it then fully charged again when I first got it.
It's not the SOT that is so worrisome but the constant Android system and kernel drain on my device.
I'm getting worse battery life on my 6 week old 3a than my 2.5 yo OnePlus 5 which wasn't good to begin with. This device was lauded for having excellent battery life and I'm not seeing it.

It isn't that at all. I found using it for anything where the phone needs to utilize the GPU a lot, like gaming, drains battery substantially. "Light" workloads, like web browsing, using social media apps, streaming video, etc give you really good battery life. Once I start up a game, I see about 5-6 hrs compared to 9.5 hrs if I just stream YouTube, check the XDA app, email, Reddit, etc.

Question Battery life - I'm lovin it!

So, day one, regular use for me, at 50% after nearly 9 hours! Thats a record for a Samsung device, for me.
Not sure mate how your, but my is completely disappointed, pixel 7 pro has 8h+ on display S23U hardly has 7.5h+
Not sure if just my usage is more hardly use but battery or maybe setup is different for me.
All turn on (mobile data, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, location, Nfc, adaptive motion, wqhd+)
3 hours on Spotify with Bluetooth speaker.
Yes I use phone for my work so most day on it.

Chrome. Great desktop browser but a terrible battery hog for phones. If you'd used Samsung browser you'd see much better battery

I believe that but I use chrome for work (password) saved there is well and all saved tab I need.
But same usage and same apps I used on pixel 7 pro is well so was hope that will same or similar better then pixel.
I not have issue on pixel great battery etc just few thing piss me off on pixels and for work spen is priceless for me.

That's probably "good" (?) for the S23U, especially if not optimized. All Samsung's should be optimized for best battery life and performance. Either by Package Disabler or adb edits.
Even with a degraded battery that due to be replaced I'm getting 8 hours or so on an optimized* N10+; easily over 12 hours SOT on a new battery. Samsung's stock solution has been to use a bigger battery since the N20U, with progressively worse SOT per mAh in spite of what should be more efficient SOCs and ram... and now no expandable storage.
*unoptimized the N10+ was a hot running hog that got 6.5 hrs SOT. Optimizing nearly doubled the SOT as significantly increased the screen off time as well. Backup Transport was a major perpetrator.
I got 19 hours on day one. Today I'm at 43% after just under 10 hours with just under 4 hours screen on time

N10+, screen off, cell/internet service on with AOD set to tap on, I use less than .5%@hr.
With good battery I use a total of 6-7% browsing with Brave, again with a good battery. Display manual brightness of 30-40%
With a degraded battery which is at replacement time this is what I'm getting, most of which is watching utube vids.
No 5G or variable refresh rate display, power set to optimized. This is with a less efficient ram and presumably SOC. More significantly much less mAh capacity.

You must have had a golden sample SoC in the 7 Pro to get that kind of battery. 99% of us didn't and don't see that.

For P7P, I find it varies wildly by ROM. Stock is a good middle ground, I think the best so far for me have been the AOSP-based ones with Gapps.

I was about to comment the same. I never got that kind of SOT on the pixel 7 pro after three months of having the device max would be 5 1/2 probably six squeezing everybit of juice. Good device but for battery the s23 ultra is giving me way more for the same usage no optimization.
I think by enabling the light performance profile, the device becomes a battery champion

Yeah I will say the February beta has had me going 39h off the charger with 5h SoT but that's largely been on wifi. I know from messing with my OnePlus 9 that it doesn't *have* to be super draining on LTE but I've taken the Pixel out on a day's outing and had it lose 50% in 3 hours on LTE/5G.
I've "upgraded" from the Fold4 in the hope that battery life would be much better. I'm blown away by how long this thing lasts!

SoC upgraded with a better power-efficiency, far smaller screen surface to power and also 600mha more on the battery. An other outcome would have been surprising.

Whole heartedly agree. My usage on the Fold4 - I hardly used the internal screen (I know, I know!). Comparing external screen use alone, this thing wins night and day. Surprising in some ways because of the resolution and pixels being driven vs the fold4 external display, but as you say, more efficient SoC coupled with a slightly larger battery must be working its magic.
Standby drain overnight is something else I've noticed as being much better too.
Early days, but I would charge my fold4 sometimes as much as 3 times throughout the day. This thing comfortably lasts a full day with many hours of screen on time and has battery left to spare. Amazing efficiency gains considering the short time frame between the two SoC's.
Mine is still optimization but so far looks good. Day 2 of use. Far better than my S22U exynos.

Second full day of usage, include setup cameras and work
Again 3 hours on Spotify +Bluetooth speaker, all turn on GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, 5G + WiFi etc it's little better then yesterday around 8h+ on display still has 6% left.
Hope will possible on my use 9h+ on display.

Nop, I got problem on pixel 6 pro Thst was big issue and charge phone 3 times a day but pixel 7pro its really similar battery like S23U right now.
It was 8h+ on display and all turn on and max resolution.
Big issue is on Bluetooth wasn't work with my huawei watch 3 pro they block it.
Not sure maybe is my phone some premium to have that but I seen better then my also.
Latest. Everything max. Bluetooth and location on all time. Poor cell reception at work. Streaming radio on commute. So impressed with this. It blows the 22 exynos away.

I mean I guess if I use my 7 Pro straight through I can get 8 hours pretty easily as my average screen on usage is 8%/hr but the standby time is awful, like 2% drain per hour. This is all on wifi too. If I am on mobile network, I'm looking at 12-15%/hr screen on and 3-4.5% standby drain. I can't wait to have the more efficient modem in the S23U.
