Honor 5x kills my apps - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

Hello folks,
I'm not getting push notifications on my phone, i use Whatsapp for messaging and calls and it works but when the screen turns off for a long time the app gets killed or something and i don't get messages nor calls through Whatsapp, until i wake up the phone and launch the app. That's when i get all the notifications and missed calls.
Things i've tried:
Changing the phone to performance mode
Protecting the app from closing when screen turns off
Leaving the app open and locked sliding down on the recent apps tab
Reinstalling and updating the app
I don't know what else to do this is driving me crazy. I was planning to stay with the stock Android but all these weird configurations make me consider going with Cyanogenmod if i can't fix it.

Going to CyanogenMod is a good decision. EMUI has problems in handling whatsapp notifications, which they say will be fixed by OS updates.
The problem of killing apps remains in EMUI till now. EMUI says killing apps is good for RAM management. But they should give more idle time for the app before killing it. You could have seen the reviews everywhere that the RAM management is not good in EMUI. Its default behaviour. You cant change it.

Damn that's pretty bad and should have been fixed by now.
i regret buying this phone if i'm forced to install a custom ROM to make something basic work.
Also the EMUI interface is disgusting so i guess i'll be installing Cyanogenmod anyways. The stock Android interface is much nicer.
Do i just flash the ROM and gapps from my SD card or there's something else i should do? Unlock bootloader or something like that?

Custom ROMs, that's all I can say

I am noticing that this phone will randomly just force close an app, like no matter if I am in system settings or in Facebook. I have used phone with less ram that handles process better than EMUI. The sad part is I bought this phone because I wanted a close to MIUI experience, although it is close, it appears to missing the mark in so many ways. I really wish Xiaomi would start selling to USA

RAM Management, Yeah EMUI doesn't do that part fine. Hoping so to get improved in future updates.

EMUI is just so app unfriendly when it comes to RAM management

I haven't flashed the custom ROM yet, emailed honor US support a month ago to see if they're planning to fix it but they ignore my emails.
I'll end up selling the phone and getting Xiaomi if CM13 gives me problems.
Sorry for the offtopic but is there a way to back up the stock Android in case i need to go back?

You can always adjust the minfree values using several apps.

I think it has nothing to do with RAM, because it kills the app even if there's nothing else running.

Maybe you enabled "Don't keep activities" in Developer options.
Sent from my honor 5X using XDA Labs

you can look into this
Settings > Advanced Settings > Battery Manager > Protected Apps
Here you can select all the Apps you want to keep running even after the screen goes off for a long time without auto-killing them
hope this helps you even without switching to CM
or
check this
go to the App Info. of those Apps which you feel they are being killed and click the Battery and then check the Keep Running after screen box
as you find in attachments

Glitchy playstore animation

I noticed this at first, but with the new playstore update its very noticeable. The animations are glitchy. Maybe it affects other apps too. Left is Honor 7, right is Xiaomi Redmi 1s which shows the animation correctly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3TbBTlShGo
Nothing glitchy here on my H7. Super smoth animations, both first start and a start from memory.

Have you compared it to another phone? Which rom are you on?
Here's another video.

I find the Honor 7 kind of laggy in small tasks like this. The UI has alot of small stutters and it seems sluggish doing small tasks. Another example is in play store, you cant swipe quickly between the tabs because the cpu is catching up. CPU is definitely being too conserved.
Also it performs noticeablly laggier in some small games such as 'unblock me' compared to Redmi 1s. My Honor 3C too performs better in some tasks than the Honor 7 and it cost half the price. I'm sure if the phone was pushed, then the Honor 7 will win, but it should always win in everything.

If you open recents and swipe app away, then open again, is it still like that? I can get the correct effect as well, but only when I press the back button to exit app. It's very strange behaviour, no issue on other phones I've tried.

As I wrote earlier, nothing like this here. Try another service provider, another router, uninstall all apps and games, factory reset, or something else. Why do you use aeroplane mode and wifi at the same time?

No sim card in phone which is why airplane mode is enabled, probably no difference on/off though.

And what about the other things I told you to try? If you can't fix it, I guess you will have to return the phone. I would not accept a sluggish phone.
Remember though that you can bog down the fastest SoC (QC810) with just a rogue app or some bad configuration.

I have almost zero apps installed so there is no rogue apps causing any issue. I've checked the running processes and its just the standard things you would expect.

I've just bought an Honor 7 (PLK-L01) and also have lag and stutter issues on minimal tasks. I've tried Nova and stock and both stutter. I've turned off/disabled/uninstalled everything I can and changed all settings to get max smoothness but nothing really changes. So frustrated!
Gerhard, could you please post a video of you scrolling through the app store, my honor 7 had always experienced stuttering with that

Whatsapp getting killed, other apps too

Hello, guys,
I have had Redmi Note 3 for 6 months now and I have been struggling with an annoying issue.
Whatsapp gets killed after a little time of idleness and unless I kill it in the task manager and restart it, I cannot either receive or send messages. When I check in the running apps section, it is not there so the OS certainly kills it. And just clicking its icon on the desktop, opens the GUI but it does not work unless I force close it and re-open it.
I have had issues with Whatsapp on previous devices - more of the common stuff - delayed notifications, messy push service. This is something else.
MIUI 8 is notorious, it seems, for its RAM and Battery management killing apps and I often struggle with that, too. For example: I minimize VLC to open Firefox. I switch back to VLC - ok, the movie starts over, the app has been killed. This is really annoying and I have turned off all kinds of optimization to prevent it, with no success. I am not sure, though, that it is connected to the Whatsapp issue. Because Whatsapp seems to get killed when the phone is idle for a moment but not when switching between apps.
I rarely use Viber but I think the situation there is the same. I sent a message to a friend and I got no response. I opened the app 5 days later and the response came However, it had tried to arrive 2 minutes after my original message. But I had not opened Viber for 5 days, so...that happened.
Let me know if you need details about my settings. I would be really grateful if someone can share some insight on what might the issue be. I guess if I root the phone I can try and locate the culprit module that kills apps. Maybe edit a config file to disable the killing functionality. It is clear this ROM does not like running apps....
Thanks,
Kiril Ekblad
P.S. I have been on Google multiple times: nobody seems to have that issue.
Disable battery saver
developer options -> disalbe MIUI optimization
MIUI is way to aggressive in killing apps ....
maybe go for a custom rom?
You can follow this https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...de-redmi-note-3-sd-mtk-multi-tasking-t3358433 and see how it`s going with push up notification.
When i`ve used miui 8, i`ve done this things and it seems to work good, but anyway push up notification came with a small delay..
For this reason i left miui 8 (very bad ram management) and flashed nougat custom rom and everything working good
Thank you, all
I have actually tried all of these and all steps in the quoted topic. No difference whatsoever. I would gladly go for a custom ROM bit things have gotten really complicated lately. A coupke of yeara aho I would easily grab and flash a custom ROM. Now when I browse through the ROMs topics here I get frustrates.
Something about firmwares, stuck bootloaders I have no idea where to start.
Oh and I don't want to lose slow motoon and time lapse videos. Do you know of a custom ROM that supports them ans the stock one does?

Try clean flash of MIUI ROM or flash Epic / Xiaomi.eu ROM
Thanks, I will have to research on the EPIC/EU ROM.
I am all for changing the ROM as long as I can cope with the flashing and I do not lose any of the significant features of the stock ROM.
By the way, recently - the last several days - I have noticed that on multiple occasions Whatsapp seems to be running - it is showing in the Running apps and still the program cannot either receive or send until I force close it and re-start. Whatsapp web also says Phone not connected.

Are there any deal breakers in this gorgeous device?

I was waiting to buy the upcoming iPhone (Blasphemy!) but I just love how unique Find X is. It is going to be up for pre-order next week and I need some advice from you users.
- How durable is that 'mechanism'?
- Are you guys able to replace the stock launcher with something like Nova or Ruthless launcher with google now feed?
- Does the surface of the retracting mechanism get covered with dust over time?
- Have any other serious complaints about the phone in general?
Thanks in advance. Will really appreciate your input. Cheers!

Yeah, it's on some sort of power trip (literally, in both senses of the phrase). That said, if you read through the thread i created, following a firmware upgrade yesterday and after a "settling period" things have been almost faultless today. My phone has been faultless and even thrown in a couple of reboots to challenge it and still been OK. My last problem of Gmail being forced to drop to 15 minute syncs instead of Push also seems to have resolved itself.
Now, i'm not sure if this is some sort of OS learning which apps I use, the firmware or just plain luck (or a combo) but, i'm now very happy with the device.
If you want your own launcher, it is entirely possible, as is removing the bloat (i'm running Nova) and there is no need to register with Oppo either. The link to achieve that is also in the thread I linked to.
I have no idea about battery life as when I'm at work it sits in a dock and then when i'm at home, it's also mostly in a dock so, battery life isn't really a concern but, i guess I'll find out this weekend!

1: The mechanism feels very durable, and 95% of the time the camera pops up fast. I have encountered 5% of time when the camera would pop up but the camera app takes an additional second or two to load.
2: nope. Unable to use nova launcher unless you into adb and do all types of advanced phone geek thing or something.
3: there's noticeable dust on my camera module but doesn't seem to be a big deal.
The big issue with this phone you should take note is, like many Chinese roms, push notifications are delayed or broken if the app has been closed or in background too long. There is a work around for this -- you have to go to settings and turn battery optimization off AND lock the app in the app overview window. This is of course, not ideal and annoying as hell. Currently I only have crucial "must get notifications on time" apps locked, such as whatsapp, wechat and Gmail. So for the most part I can use the phone fine. But I do miss all other notifications such as airbnb messages, Facebook messages, LinkedIn messages, until I open those apps again. I could lock all of them down too, but I don't want to have like seven apps running in background at all times.
This is a problem with many Chinese version of Chinese phones. I don't know why they think battery optimization so aggressive it kills notifications is a good thing.

1) Stock Android provides for incoming notifications to be seamless (automatic by default, individual 3rd party app settings may be different by default, but, can be easily toggled on). Oppo has severe restrictions on this, limiting to 5 user installed apps to start automatically on boot & 5 apps total to be locked in recent memory.
So, a high horsepower phone is basically muzzled, if you can deal with the angst of wondering if you're going to get timely notifications...... Perhaps if you use the stock email & messaging apps, these will likely work, but, I would steer clear of those....
2) No NFC, so, no tap to pay apps will work.
3) No VoLTE, no VoWI-FI
4) No status bar notification icons, no LED notification indicator.
5) If you use T-Mobile Digits & it isn't a top 5 protected app/one of your precious 5 to auto start on boot, it will log you out of the app on reboot & it will not work until you set it up again, resulting in missed messages & phone calls.
6) 3rd party clock apps: Again, if it's not a protected top 5 app, it will not keep proper time, resulting in missed alarms..... The stock clock works, but, it is a bare bones app at best, no snooze adjustment, locked into 5 minutes, SERIOUSLY?
7) Ad Blockers will work, but, intermittently, again, the top 5 protected app thing & even then, Oppo will kill it off at some point, resulting in having to restart the blocking.
8) If you choose to use a 3rd party launcher, you again lose some functionality. I use Chrome & frequently place shortcuts on my desktop from it.
NOT ON THIS PHONE, another swing & a miss....
9) Bluetooth devices:
Generally they work fine, but,if the device has a companion app, prepare for it (the app) to not work properly.
Example(s):
I have a pair of Jabra Elite Active 65t earbuds,pair-up & work fine, but, the companion app will not work,as it requires a plug-in app to fuel it. These various "plug-in" apps are typical & the companion apps work fine elsewhere, but, not on this phone.
Reason being, the "plug-in" app does not have a user interface,so,you cannot make the app a top 5 protected app to gain functionality,it simply won't work at all.
Ditto for smartwatches such as the Samsung line-up, for the same reason,no notifications, worked one day for me & broken the next, before & after the most recent Oppo update. That results in the Samsung smartwatch getting a lobotomy, only able to keep time & nothing more.
10) Package tracking apps:
Again, the top 5 protected thing,no timely updates & even then, mine simply did not refresh automatically, had to be done manually.
I could go on, but, in a nutshell, you're forced to make sacrifices as soon as you start using the phone. If this was a entry level/low storage/low RAM device, that's one thing.
But, it's not, basically a Lamborghini running on two cylinders, that's not what I paid for & why I sold mine 5 days after the most frustrating phone experience I've ever seen....

The international version goes on sale in India and the Philippines today. We should soon get an idea of what the phone is capable of when it isn't hobbled by the oppressive Chinese firmware.

As a Wear OS user (Polar M600) i can absolutely CONFIRM what Koliosis is saying and this is not just limited to Samsung Watches.
That said, my watch has been fine now for 2 days and, even after a reboot, the same apps are still auto-run and remain locked. I actually like this solution now BUT, why the FRACK have they restricted it to only 5 apps!?
Anyway, as an example, my locked and running fine apps are:
Wear OS
The Crypto App (so it's widget runs OK - take note, to run a widget, the PARENT app needs to be locked sometimes)
WhatsApp
Gmail
Google Calendar (again, for it's widget)
Now, for me, this is perfectly OK and I have no need to even want to lock other apps (like Facebook) as i'm not interested however, you need to assess YOUR needs which may be more apps.
edit: Oh, oddly, i've got the Sony Experia clock widget installed and that runs perfectly even without being locked and I've no idea why!
Also, I've got the red and it looks stunning. Easily the best looking phone i've ever owned. You'll be happy with the physical design.

I'd be open to getting the phone again, provided the version you'll be getting won't be locked-down,as far as Auto-Start/RAM/recents/app permissions go.
If you've perused the threads here, you're aware of the limitations the users have with the Chinese version,I sure hope your experience is leaps & bounds better.............. :good:

If these restrictions do not exist on a non-Chinese version, I'll be flashing as soon as it is possible and a method is detailed!

I am positive for a better experience on the Indian version which is already better in terms of bloat and hopefully we can do a workaround for the other issues. I will keep you posted. Currently it's a long wait as the tentative delivery is 5th August so I'll share my inputs after playing with the machine for a couple of days
Many thanks for your inputs so far and the adb workaround for bloat.

app closing and battery saver [Umidigi F1]

So I like the big battery in this phone, but I hate that when I open an app, and it loads (facebook for example), then I get an incoming email, so I tap the notification to open and read my email, the phone closes/ends my fb app. When I go back to fb, it re-launches the app all over again. It's annoying when I'm in the middle of something, and it'll force-close and lose everything I was typing. I've enabled dev options, and see an option in there for apps "Don't keep activities" (destroy every activity as soon as the user leaves it) which sounds like exactly what is happening, but this option is disabled. I've disabled every possible battery saver option I can find.
Anyone know where else to look? You wouldn't think it'd be a big thing, but it's really annoying having to spend extra time re-launching every single app as opposed to just switching between them already launched.
Thanks in advance!

I am using Ruthless Pixel launcher, from here xda, and I haven't got this problem. May be you have to disable the DuraSpeed from Settings.
Bye!
I tried a different launcher. I'll try the one you use. I've even had problems with the launcher having to "restart" and when I go back to the homescreen, it takes several seconds for that to load.
same problem here, every battery saver option disabeled, duraspeed off, and everything that i need to to i did in the developer options, but literally every app reboots after i switch to an other. any news on how to get rid of it?
I've switched between several different launchers. This isn't a launcher problem. It's a phone software problem.

I'm running Nova Launcher and see what you're talking about...if you leave a Facebook post you're working on open, then go to research something else, even though the draft post is there on screen when you scroll for it, the post will close and re-open before you can edit it again, wiping out the draft. A bug that needs to be fixed, indeed. The weirder thing is, after looking at it some more, is that it isn't easy to consistently replicate. Weird, indeed.

So I packaged my phone up last night and shipped it back this morning. But a buddy of mine MAY have figured out how to make it work. Go to Duraspeed and ENABLE it. Then ENABLE the apps (or all apps) that you want to STAY ALIVE in the background. See if that allows them to all run, yeah, like making a fb post type thing. Report back. I may have to go buy it again!
I have ZimLX and no issue with background apps.

That only helps a little bit, if you switch between tw games, or a game than check facebook and then whatzapp, the game resets. Also if you like switch to 3 different apps, they usually reset and get force closed from the systhem.
Also if you turn on duraspeed, youtube vanced gets forceclosed, even when it is allowed in duraspeed.
So what i do right now is enable duraspeed and the app that i want and whenever i wanna hear music in the background, i have to disable duraspeed.
Also, it is a real dealbreaker right now, it´s just way to buggy.
it seems like they programmed a way too harsh task kille in on purpose to give a longe battery life.

Not true, everyone has these problems nomather what launcher, it is a software problem.
Usually everyone has tryed to disable duraspeed of course and whatnot.
This problem/bug is really annoying. It makes me hate the phone to be honest.
How/who do we report this too?
Try here - https://community.umidigi.com/forum.php?mod=forumdisplay&fid=210
From what I've seen, Umidigi employees monitor and are active in their Forums, so hopefully someone will pay attention.

obviously we habe the lastest rom and every user has that problem it is a rom problem.
Also, what is a zim xl, google gives nothing about that.
I had a few apps do screwy things with the powersaver on , and it would be a few. Kroger app would crash and would not work until you uninstall and reinstall it. Att Uverse app, when you login it give a message about allow permissions, it had all, anything that need the gps. if I turn off the power saver I do not have those issues.

[Edit]Actually this doesn't work well. A couple posts down is my fix that works.
I logged in after a while to post this! This is a reply to you and op and anyone else having this "problem". Thanks to this forum post, I found a solution. I think it's an ingenious design they created. If you want every app to run in the background, *enable Duraspeed and enable all apps* in the top right corner. Then, *Reboot your phone*.
After you do this, the phone will magically be as fast as it should again. It's like I rebought a phone 100x better then what I was using .
The ingenious part of it is, if you don't want certain apps running in the background then Disable them! (you'll probably have to reboot for any change to be applied)
I love this design and I am now back in love with my Umidigi F1 , hope this helps everyone.
i sold it like 3 months ago and fixed a broken note 9 for cheap. my friend who owns the f1 since then still has this issue even when he tried your fix.
also another friend who owns a f1 play has this issue since the last update he had, he even newly installed / whiped it and so on, seems like umidigi just has problems with theis software and also it seems like it only affects a few people.

Hello, I agree. The fix wasn't 100%.
So here is the official fix, and once again it makes sense. (You might have to enable developer mode)
Go to your apps/notifications in settings, select an app, under the app click advanced, Battery, then battery Optimizations. Under that page go through your apps and disable optimizations for apps you want to stay on in the background.
Found this out and it works.
Actually figured it out once I read your post
If it doesn't work, reboot your phone.
Still doesn't work, do this along with duraspeed on the selected apps.
Still doesn't work, might just be the app. (Some of my games still don't stay in memory)
It's working good for me now, but if I wanted more apps to stay open I'd check developer settings and turn Max apps to keep in memory to the highest amount.
and I agree, it's a bit unpolished. Probably something to do with their battery optimizations and Android's not being compatable.
Tried several methods and nothing truly works. Your best bet is to flash a GSI/rom. Or just root the phone and install "ram fix by cork" magisk mod. I'm using the latter method and it works fine.
Yep the software itself has far too aggressive memory management despite it having 4Gb of RAM and kills apps far too quickly.
I complained about it to UMIDIGI support and they said go buy an F2.
What i did was used this forum to install Lineage OS and now have no memory issues
Either install a GSI (I suggest LOSQ) or download RAM Management Fix by Crock if you can find it, it's not in Magisk anymore.

Can someone explain certain options to me and their impact on performance?

Hey!
I've been using this application for a very long time now but I'm just interested into knowing a couple of things like what couple of options mean in practice.
Of course the best way would be to try them yourself but I have over 400 application so I guess it wouldn't really be that easy so that's the reason why I'm asking. I have just realized that there is an option to ignore the running state and I see that it has improved my phone's performance for like 50% for sure.
What do other options do like disabling long running service or hibernation mode?
I can tell you that I don't really care about anything else other than performance so should be fine for me to enable these options for every single application?
Thank you for reading!

S9 Plus running Noble ROM on Android 11.
hey,
well im not familiar with that ROM but right off the bat, u should see some performance improvements by using an "app manager" or "auto start" manager to curb the ram used by autostarting apps on your phone which sounds like the option ur describing, perhaps a tweak on ur cus rom. Next i would use something like Greenify with root access to hibernate or kill both user and some system apps that kill alot of battery and memory.
Using a global adblocking app on a rooted phone maybe another good idea and u can check out some posts on playing with your "host file"...
if ur die hard performance junkie...u can look into swapping kernels and such if its available. If you get into overclocking always watch your temp. Also all this is a very good way to brick ur phone or cause hardware failure, be careful, be warned, read lots, do once.
Hope this helps a lil bit atleast...
What about cutting " wakeup paths"?
I see they can make problem sometimes. I have ended up in bootloop couple of times so I just wanted to see what does this option do in practice? Will the change be written in data or system partition?
