Worthy successor to my beloved 1st Gen Moto G - Sony Xperia X Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

I've been looking up upgrade my trusty ol' Moto G for quite a while, the horrible camera, lack of RAM and old bottom end processor were its Achilles heel, but until now I have been unable to find a phone that I thought would work for me. With skepticism I decided to go for the XC despite the lack of dev support and general love for this phone, and so far I'm happy that I got it (I bought the white one, good choice). My hope is that this phone becomes popular with the community and developers. Anyway just wanted to introduce myself to the forum, I usually don't post a whole lot but I do read through.

I am exactly in your position although I didn't buy it yet. Still reading infos about it and stuff...but I'm glad to read your opinion. I still think Moto G 1gen dimensions are perfect so I think too this would be perfect. :good:

The longer I use this phone the more I love it. So snappy, takes awesome pictures, great design. It's a big upgrade from the OG moto G

I just got the phone but I would agree the Moto G did a lot right! It's been my backup for years and I think it's all because of that awesome rugged case moto sold as an accessory! The sim slot was destroyed by adapters I've used over time and I never had the LTE version. The community kept it going strong though and the generations after just weren't true to what I liked about the original. I've had a z3c before the Xc and I love holding this device but I'm VERY disappointed by the amount of bloat on this phone. If I can't get root or a slimmer AOSP like ROM from Sony suitable for a daily before my return period is up it's hasta la vista X Compact! Not paying 400 dollars to be pestered about updates to software I don't even use and an uninstallable Facebook app! Get that piece of crap software off my phone!

I disabled the bloatware from the apps drawer (just long press in a blank area), not as good a solution as a custom ROM but it'll do in the mean time

I took this advice but was still not satisfied. I started searching, watched a youtube that led me to this software:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 which is MUCH better than using sony's version of "disabling"
For example: After disabling Facebook I discovered using the above tool that two facebook apk's were left untouched, com.facebook.system.apk and com.facebook.appmanager.apk
The only thing left would be to destroy the symlink to the app store for these apps that I want gone. Anyone know if that's possible without root?
Also, anyone know if a "Concept" rom from Sony might be on it's way? Xperia X got one and if we had root I'm sure there's a developer out there with the talent to port it over.

It helps. It even allows you to hide/disable the sony apps that the sony launcher itself doesn't allow you to. To be safe I searched the app I wanted to hide on apkmirror to find out the actual apk name and then looked for that in the software.

I do have a moto g and am considering to buy X compact. The only thing stopping me from doing it is lack of official CM support. Can someone comment on this?
I also had an Xperia ray which was awesome as well.

Is the Xperia Tablet S right for me

I realise posting in this section will get me biased reviews, but Im 99% sure the xperia tablet s is right for me just want a few opnions from people who have one.
My situation is that my windows laptop has about had it, it still works but even after a fresh format it just doesnt keep up with me these days. For the first time ever since my first wndows 3.1 machine I am wanting to move away from microsoft completly and move across to android (I will be keepig the windows laptop in a cupboard just in case theres something I cant do on android such as root a phone and such, you just never know)
I got myself my first android phone back in April which is an xperia T and I have fallen in love with it, I have rooted it, unlocked the boot loader and now got it running exactly how I want with no glitches, at the time it was a close call between the T and the Samsung S3 however after owning the T I am glad I went with sony over sammy mainly for how professional and business like it feels, the samsung just looks and feels like a childs phone compared in my opinion
This leads me to the tablet obviously the xperia z tablet would be my ideal choice, but I just cant warrant having that much in a tablet so my options came down to:
Xperia Tablet S
Nexus 10
Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
I really want to stay with the Sony Brand mainly because I love their take on android over samsung or stock android, Im just a little worried that Im buying something that is a dead or at least fast dying tablet? Mainly because sony seem to have discontinued everything now, obviously they are really pushing the z phone and tableand seem to be neglecting almost every other model
Would I be better going with the much more popular tab 2, samsung do seem to keep things well updated and there is a much larger raange of accessories?
Or paying out a little more and getting the superior Nexus 10? The display sounds fantastic and I am sure I would love the nexus 10, but its quite a lot me expensive than the s
I would use it for emails, typing on the internet in forums, surfing the net and controlling my synology disk station, then maybe when me and the misses go away watching a film, but that would be about as far as I would ever need to push the tablet
Just wanting to hear real world opinions and such on the xperia tablet s, if you have one, do you with you had something else or do you love it?

Wait for 2nd gen Nexus 10. These Sony tabs are locked down and don't really get any updates anymore. I would wait for the next Nexus 10, and either get the new Nexus 10, or get a used 1st gen Nexus 10 when the prices drop.

Thanks I have been half thinking that, I just love the Sony android style, like the idea of phone and tablet being the same. Does the final fw for the xps have issues or is it a great firmware? If it's perfect I don't really need future updates, however if it's poor and the bootloader is locked, guess I would be stuck. Thanks

Right now, the XTS has some issues with Wi-Fi even though one of the updates was supposed to fix it, and I've heard of a bug where the Tegra 3 will only use 2 cores instead of all 4. The core count bug is fixable with a root app, but it's not exactly permanent and it doesn't always work. And trust me, even though you say you won't mind not getting updates, once you flash 4.4 or some future version of android on your phone, you will change your mind. The screen on the XTS is crap too, with bad color saturation, low resolution, and bad viewing angles. You would be much happier with a Nexus 10.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take it and get myself a nexus 10 shame not to have the Sony ui, but the nexus seems a great device, can't justify the extra for the Xperia z just to get the Sony ui.
Never know I may even end up preferring stock android

There are plenty of Sony themes for ROMs with the theme engine anyway, so if you unlock the bootloader on the Nexus you could make it look similar to a Sony anyway

Yeah thanks for the suggestion as I said in my original post its a little more than I want to have in a tablet to be honest.
I have actually ended up buying a nexus 10 and a 2nd gen nexus 7, as I couldnt decide which would be right for me, Ill have a good go with both of them and decide before factory resetting one and sticking it back on ebay, fortunatly good condition second hand ones go for about £5 less than brand new ones on ebay.
I just couldnt decide between them if I wanted the screen size or the weight advantage

[Q] Lenovo S8 (S8-50) Tablet - Possible Support?

http://www.mobilegeeks.com/lenovo-tab-s8-full-review-video/
http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/tablets/lenovo/s-series/s8/
Do you guys think this device will be supported by anyone on XDA?
There isn't a trace of anything currently, which appears to be the case for anything by Lenovo unfortunately, which is a shame as this appears to be a very capable device.
I'd love to replace my N7 (2013) with one but the lack of support and being forced to use Lenovo's (most likely crap) software is a deal-breaker.
It currently costs just over £100 in the UK because of a deal with Curry's and a cashback scheme from Lenovo themselves.
Nice little tablet
I bought one a couple of weeks ago to replace my Nexus 7 (2012) that had a cracked screen. I've been really happy with it so far. Lenovo's software isn't that bad, and you can fix most of the issues (no app drawer?) by installing something like Nova or Apex launcher. I would like root access so that I can use Titanium Backup and get rid of some bloatware, but I have not been disappointed in the tablets performance at all.
Let's hope someone smarter than me finds an exploit for this tablet soon.

Yea it would be nice but that's my concern.
All the "smart" people are using Nexus 7s or Galaxy Tabs and have no interest in this.
I've decided against it for now! Glad you're enjoying yours though.

I hope this gets support!
Spec wise it's better than the nexus 7. The Intel atom 3745 is bang in the middle performance wise compared to the snapdragon 600 and 800. Got mine for 107 from p.c world, what a bargain!!!
Hope the popularity picks up and we see it get root access. Custom roms would be a huge bonus, but I won't be holding my breath!
Forum needed
I too would love to see a sub-forum for this device. I've bought one and am seriously impressed with it for the price. Only one gripe is that the screen flashes once every so often. I hope it's software related rather than hardware.
Interesting, mine does the screen flashing too. It seems some apps cause it more than others.
I would love to see a forum for this device to start getting users together.
i would like to get root on this aswell, its an awesome tablet for the price but root would make it so much better

Is that a little like walking backwards? Get the device first, then hope for root and/or developer support.
Generally, the advice is check for root and/or developer support first, then buy the device. Apart from ensuring you don't end up with a dead end device, it also ensures that your business goes to reward manufacurers that produce open and flexible devices that really do adapt to their customer's needs and usage rather than forcing customers into a strait jacket.
I would also like to gain root access for this device. If anyone knows of a way to root I'd be extremely thankful!

I understand the point you are trying to make, but it doesn't apply to my decision to buy this tablet. It would be nice to have a root solution for the reasons I mentioned, but I knew one was unavailable when I purchased it. If we get root, great, I'll use Titanium Backup and get rid of some apps I don't plan on using. If we don't get root, it's still a great tablet with a fantastic screen, decent speakers, and solid performance for under $200. Since I'm unlikely to keep any device as my primary device for more than around 18 months (I get bored and want something shinier!), I'm not super concerned about whether or not it's considered a "dead end device" either.

It's cool that you were informed before you bought it. LG G Pad 8.3 offers similar benefits but is more open.
On these devices that can monitor ever more of what one does and report back to who-knows-where without one's knowledge or permission, one is motivated to demand more and more control that isn't possible if the devices are locked down. I hope Lenovo's lack of openness doesn't rub off on Motorola now they own it.

For what it's worth, I found a working root method at the Russian Lenovo forums. I can't post a link because I haven't made enough other posts yet, but it's pretty easy to find.
You will need to register to download the files.
I can confirm it worked on my s8-50f. There also appears to be a TWRP recovery posted, but I haven't tried that yet.

A little OT. I apologize but...
The newly released Nokia N1 seems a good, comparable device for similar outlay. Intel Atom too. Unlocked bootloader. Wifi-only though.
Sadly no word on kernel sources, 3rd party developer friendliness etc

Yeah, that's the right forum.
I looked at the N1, and had it been available when my Nexus 7 broke, it would have been on my short list. My only real issue is the aspect ratio. It's unclear at this time how well apps are going to play on th 4:3 screen. I've read that a lot of stuff doesn't really look great on the Nexus 9. That could turn out to be a totally groundless concern though, we'll see.

I'd bet it would be on a lot of shortlists. Nokia dropped the ball by not releasing this in time for Xmas. Would have ended up in a few stockings that may now get an Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact or Nexus 7/9 or LG G Pad 8.3 or iPad Mini...
Just trying to determine if CM11 (or other AOSP roms) can be ported to it. That would make it an awesome [almost budget] choice.

The display is the best part of this tablet, honestly. It's bright, the colors look great (to me at least), and the viewing angles are fantastic. It doesn't collect any more smudges than the display on my G2.

The Z4 tablet still a great choice?

Guys,
I sent the Pixel C back. It died in 2 days. I was looking at the Sony Z4 tab along with the google one. Now I am looking back at it. Is that Sony Z4 tablet still a fantastic tablet? Issues? Just looking for overall comments before I look to find one to buy..I dont see them for sale much right now so I find it might be hard to get one anyway. But thought I would ask before I started looking..
Well I was in the same boat as you. I recently purchased the Nexus 9 lte tablet but wasn't happy with it due to the poor construction and some light bleed issues in the screen so I decided to look for this Z4 in Amazon and got it for $589.00 Free shipping and no Tax. Man best choice I've ever made! Really well build table, super thin, great speakers and water proof. Doesn't have many development support or Roms support but you can root it, install Xposed, debloat it and live with it.....oh and great battery life. Compatible with T-mobile and At&t LTE even it says 4G.
Yes is still a great option almost a year after of his released.

My topic My Z4 Tablet Pros and Cons gives some of my and other's thoughts that are still relevant for the most part.
Also, the tablet flies on Marshmallow. I'm still super happy with my choice.
Does anyone think they might come out with a replacement for it anytime soon?

The problem with android tablets is that they do not sell well. That causes OEMs to only release mid to low end tablets perpetuating the situation. It's a sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead of making their tablets better so that they can sell better, they make them worse so they sell even worse than before.
That lets (as a result) old tablets to still be excellent. For example my Note Tablet is the best pen-based tablet to this day (maybe ipad pro 9.7 will change that), portable, unlike the 12inch behemoths and awesome functionality coming out of the pen.
Similarly Xperia Z4 remains even after a year of its release one of the best if not *the* best tablet, period. It's the lightest 10 incher ever created by far, making it the only choice for heavy readers. After MarshMallow some of the best battery lives in the industry, excellent screen and the lack of Roms can be fixed by xposed (which pretty much has *all* the features of custom roms).
Still whilst my wife has one, I won't buy one for myself because I don't want to support Sony's ridiculous DRM-Warranty policy. If that doesn't bother you, I don't think you can go wrong with this tablet, I'm hard pressed to find anything better (maybe ipad pro if you don't mind jailbreaking).

Excellent point.

Census - got one, had one, want one?

There don't appear to be many of these devices around, and I am curious to try and find out how many.
I love the hardware. If it was just about the specs, I'd have bought one already!
But I'm undecided.
If the bootloader was unlockable, with custom recoveries and custom ROMs, I'd have bought one. However, with Asus not cooperating, and I think too few devices around, I am not sure this will achieve the critical mass to get the attention it deserves.
Sadly, the lack of international availability, and, well, Asus being Asus, means that if this was an experiment to judge the demand for super-sized phablets, then I think it failed. I don't think we'll see another from Asus.
I have one, and will be keeping it for now. However it is not my daily driver, and until AT&T fixes their HSPA+ network in my area, or root becomes available so I can unlock bands, this device will stay just a play around device.
Hi,
I have one since about 2 months and I love its big screen, reviews said that there was no lag, no freezes etc... False, the proc is not that good and I'm really desapointed but that's not why I will change.
I'll change because I cannot accept that an android phone cannot have root or unlockable bootloader, for me it's not an android...
If I wanted an extremly locked phone, I'd choose an iPhone... lol
Oh and... still no Nougat update for other versions than ZF3 5.2 and 5.5 (Stopped because euh... well, because what in fact?)
So, for a 750€ smartphone...
Asus? Never again.
wow, only six people bought one? and one of those is going to sell it. doesn't look too good.
edit: updated the count
Yea I have it and im using it on T-Mobile which is OK with hspa+ but the bootloader unlock not coming out is killing my joy with the phone. Awesome device but I find myself using my OnePlus 3t more because of Asus stupid choices with the bootloader.
Have one & will keep it. The only really irritating thing so far is having both speakers on one side, when you keep the phone in landscape mode; but I'm getting used to tolerate it and can use the headphones anyway.

the iphone7 has a dummy speaker, one set of grilles are just blind holes!
so I guess even having genuine dual speakers is a win, but yes, would have been better to have them top and bottom, or even on the long edge.
the availability of an official boot loader unlock tool has swung me back to considering this phone again.
I have had my Z3Ultra for a number of months now after I purchased it to replace my nice but also annoying Huawei P8 Max. I totally love this phone. Can't complain with the exception of the lack of Root, which as I write this message, the developer community is working on bringing it to our device. Apart from this, I am looking to keep it until a new device is released with much better spec but at least the same size possibly even a 7.9" (YES it can be as like the Huawei P8 Max, this phone has a lot of wasted space and overall size can still be kept to current size- check Xiaomi Mi Mix) with ultra thin bezels and curved display, stylus pen, keyboard attachment, better cpu, 128GB or 256GB ROM, 6GB+ RAM, dual sim + independent sd slot and finally quad speakers (top, bottom, left, right side with similar quality to the ones already on it (they are awesome, I mean it). Anyway, enough dreaming from me, lets hope someone from Asus is reading my expectations of the next version.
I have one and will keep it, i am coming from a sony z ultra that I've been using for almost 2 years and sony z3 tablet compact 4g 3 months before that and a sony z1 before that, i have only had the asus zenfone 3 ultra for 1 week but have wanted this device since may last year, i bought this for £420 from eglobal and only bought this because my cousin wanted a better device than the Samsung s4 but he wanted to buy the sony z5 because he knew i enjoyed my sony devices but never asked why i didn't have a updated version like the z2 or z3, i sent him the information about the zenfone 3 series and the asus launch videos, he finally bought the deluxe 820 version after 3 months from the same seller but wanted this as soon as i showed these devices to him, i also bought my dad a sony z2 for work and recently upgraded his device to the asus zenfone 3 5.2 inch version. My cousin now wants the ultra version and im going to also buy his deluxe version to use for work. This is the best decision ive made but would buy a xiaomi mi max for less than 200 if i don't get the deluxe from him and stay with my ultra device too. I drive for work and have always had large screen devices for 3-4 years. Lets see what asus has to offer other than the AR version as this is only a small version or normal size lol. I've been recently looking around for root and unlocking bootloader and will wait for asus to release this to all.
Xiaomi Mi Mix? specs? quat speakers?

It is nice to dream and imagine good things in life and the spec posted (as stated in my original post) is what I want to see in an ideal device of this size. Oh No. I am definitely not smoking anything. Just dreaming the possibility of a perfect phablet (A mix between ZF3U, Samsung Galaxy S7/S8 type edge display and mi mix type bezelless front with the extras as cherry on top).
BTW. As I discovered very recently ASUS Customer Service for the ZenFone series is rubbish to say the least but more like non-existent. God help us when we need care for our precious ZF3U.

You are wright buddy, this is what I want too but no body makes it.:laugh:
My wife had 1. She dropped it face first on a concrete with flip cover that came with the phone. The screen still shattered. The flip cover is coming covering the screen but still didn't protect it from the impact. I guess that's the gamble when you have a very large screen.

I have one and love it, despite the stuff that is installed there out of the box. Its fast, bright and really useful. One thing that slightly upsets me - need to reboot it every second day to keep at the top of its abilities.
Overall - I'd never hesitate to recommend it.:good:
I had one, then gave it to my daughter while i used other smaller screen phone... Then i realize i got hooked on big screen, so i bought another one for me

Mainly, you CAN'T assume that just because folks don't report stuff here on XDA, that no one has it. Next, many users are Chinese, or from Taiwan. They won't necessarily speak English. Third, since the LTE bands are NOT available in the U.S.A., that kills more of the market. Lastly, the going rate is around $500 USD, if someone here DID want to buy one. Ours is black screen bricked right now, so we're trying to get help with the (WW) international version unbricking.
I should have been more clear, what I was interested in was how many XDA forum members have bought this, so as to gauge the level of interest and likelihood of hackers and developers doing interesting things with it. I don't know enough about custom Asus ROMS in this respect to actually do the work, but would have been willing to help test rooting and custom recoveries, only I ended up buying an LG V20 because it had all the features I wanted and the AZf3U didn't, and also my concerns about Asus's upgrade longevity set in.

I was planning to get zf3 ultra but with almost no rom support, I might get the mi max 2 instead.
I don't think the mi mix is a good idea since it has a fragile ceramic body. I prefer metal body...
*Edit: I gave away my mi max (helium ver) and back to using my 5 years old coolpad 9976a

LG X Charge apk not included

Hello all!
I now own the exclusive to Xfinity Mobile LG X Charge phone.
For the time I have used it thus far which is just over 12 hours and I have discovered it is missing some essential apps I am very keen on having and am missing which are the basic LG apps Email and Gallery. The Email app worked so good and was so lightweight and simple and just always worked without fuss. The Gallery app is basically the same thing for me. I do not want to use Google Photos and manage my photos. I loved having my picture folders in a nice and simple app.
So now I come here seeking any help or advice on how I could possibly get some stock LG apps to actually work with this new phone. I cannot find any information on this phone anywhere as far as root/custom things.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciative. Thank you.
How do you like it? I should have mine on Monday. I planned on just using the sim card in my S7 for now but after seeing the massive battery, I might just go with it. I don't do anything too intensive.

I'm loving the battery life so far. I've been getting 15+ SoT with light usage, some Pokemon GO and music streaming in there as well.
Some things that are of inconvenience to me personally is I cannot get file transfers to work over USB hooking it up to my computer. I tried downloading LG drivers for it and all that. I just ended up using AirDroid to transfer my files over to it.
It works just fine now. It was either my cousins phone as he has the exact same model or it was his computer not allowing the USB hook-up to work. My phone and computer works just fine hooking it up over USB.
It also doesn't come with some stock apps like Gallery and a stock Email app. I have started using Gmail for all of my emails like Hotmail, etc. and using the app Piktures in place of stock Gallery. It has a built in file manager but I did not find it very useful so I picked up open source Amaze file manager, it plays nice.
The camera isn't too shabby I didn't seem to find a manual mode at all so I tried Open Camera, but it appeared to reduce quality so I scrapped it. I came from a locked unpaid for ATT LG G4 so rip on the amazing camera quality I'm use to.
Final thoughts: Love the great battery life and for a light user like my self it is a solid phone as I don't do anything too intensive.
Also if you miss the app drawer you can download it back from LGs app update center in settings.
I've been using it for a few days now. So far I think it's great. The battery is fantastic. I used it all day long yesterday and it was on 48% by the end of the night. That's a great tip about the app drawer. I've had it for so long now that's awkward not having it. I hope this phone gets a little love from developers. I tried KingRoot but no luck. The camera is the only downside for me. It's definitely lower quality than I'm used to. I'll take the trade off right now. It's nice not making monthly payments on a phone.

Yes I was so use to the app drawer I had to find a way to get it back, it was driving me nuts lol. I hardly use it as much now but I still do every once and awhile. The default UI launcher has every single app on your phone as a shortcut on your homescreen and I wasn't a fan of that.
Yeah I didn't think KingRoot would work, thanks for trying though. This phone will most likely not get root which makes me sad, but the phone feels pretty stock as it is with little to no bloatware, at least with the Xfinity Mobile model. Do you have this or the Cricket model?

I got it for Xfinity. I'm not a huge fan of Comcast, but my Verizon bill was out of control. I went from $180 a month for 10GB to $80. I have unlimited, my wife is per GB because she doesn't use much. I was also paying $30 a month for my S7 Edge. So the difference is really $50 a month. I'll take it.
I agree about root. I doubt anyone will pay attention to this phone. We can hope though. I can follow instructions but find exploits is way over my head.
Yup it is nice especially if you already have service through Comcast.
I tried Debloater to disable apps but it's either Nougat or a security patch that doesn't allow Debloater to work anymore.

Just an update in case anyone cares. This phone is freaking awesome. It's almost 7:00pm and my batter is at 75%. It's plenty fast enough. The only downside to me is the camera. It's not a deal breaker though.

Just curious as to what you think is wrong with the camera? I actually thought the camera was really good compared to my other phones. Moto g4 play and Samsung Galaxy grand prime. This phone seems to take very clear photos and videos.

The camera is a step down from my old LG G4, but the camera is good enough for me. It is still a decent camera.
For lithium630 I guess he is comparing it to the camera on his Samsung S7 which has dual 12MP cameras.

I see, you can't really compare a high end phone to a budget phone. There are probably plenty of differences between the two. Honestly.

I had the Samsung S7 Edge before this one. The pictures were crystal clear. By comparison this one often looks a little out of focus to me and grainy.

The S7 edge is a top of the line phone, you shouldn't compare it to a budget phone. It's like comparing a Lamborghini to a Ford.

I realize that. I was explaining what it was like to make the switch in case anyone was thinking of it. I'm shocked that the camera is the ONLY trade-off for me. I love this phone. I can't imagine paying four times the price for a "top tier" phone again.
The only other downside is that I doubt developers will give it any love. There was no bootloader unlock for the S7 Edge anyway.
