Car Mounts - Google Pixel Accessories

We don't seem to have a thread discussing car mounts here, so...
I have an iOttie Easy One Touch XL car mount, which I got because I needed something that would fit my old Note 3 (which my previous iOttie Easy One Touch didn't). It's a great car mount, that holds the phone well, and has never fallen off the mounting plate despite crazy Ottawa temperatures.
The problem is, it doesn't fit the Pixel well. The side grips clamp right where the volume controls are on the Pixel. And though you can lower the little shelf, you can't lower it enough to prevent that.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good car mount (not an air vent one), that works well with the Pixel but can also fit an LG G4 (in an Otterbox Commuter case)?

I use a Mag 'n Mount. It works great with both my Spigen Slim Armor and maxboost ultra slim case. It probably won't look great if you have the magnetic plate taped to a clear/translucent case though.

I purchased a proclip mount and holder for my iPhone 3g when that phone came out in 2008. It was the adjustable holder where I can slide it wider if needed. I've used the same holder and just purchased new mounts for what ever car I had at the time. I'm still using it with my pixel. It fit all of the phones in my signature after the iPhone 3g. It opened wide enough for my moto x pure with a case on it. So for the money and longevity it's great.

I second ProClip, I am on their list to be notified when the form fitted holder is available for the Pixel. I have had one for my MotoX Pure, and MotoX 2014. They are awesome!

Anyone have any experience with the mounts that slot into your CD player? How well do they hold in place?

They work great. Better than most windshield and vent mounts.
This is what I use with my Pixel

Are there any issues with having cables plugged into a phone on a magnetic car mount? I use both an AUX 3.5mm jack as well as a charging cable, and want to make sure that those would pull the phone off (there's plenty of slack) or cause it to rotate.

My phone just came in today and I can't wait to get home and tinker on it but I'll probably transfer from my 5x to the pixel the AUKEY Car Mount Air Vent Magnetic Cell Phone Holder for iPhone 7, 6S, Plus, Samsung and Other Android, Windows Smartphones. It's $5.99 right now. As someone else mentioned, it sucks because I bought a silver pixel as much as I'd like to have a clear case, I don't want to be showing a bit piece of magnet on the back of the case so I got a black case.

My RAM X-Grip mount has been able to fit every phone I've thrown at it -- it's easy to reposition the phone so the grips avoid the buttons. I currently use the suction version on a flat piece of trim near the top of the center console and it has never failed me. Solid as a rock.

I'm sure that mount is compatible with the pixel somehow, but doesn't it look as though that top flange is sitting right on the volume buttons?

I'm trying to find a mount for the pixel and saw this on Amazon to. How long is the mount arm? I have an SUV (Durango) so I think I would need a pretty long arm but I can't find any mounts that won't cover the pixels volume buttons but also have a long arm :/

This magnetic one pushes onto the vents. I've been using it for a few months.

Any issues with the magnet not being strong enough? Ever have the phone drop when traveling on a bumpy road?

I'd guess it would depend on the thickness of the case, but I haven't had any problems so far.

If anyone is still looking, the Proclip for the Pixel (and XL) is available now. I ordered one a week or two ago and the mount for my 4Runner. I like it. I got just the mount without the cable/charger. The clip for my car is actually really nice too - I didn't even bother uncovering its adhesive as it stays pretty well without it.
I like that it has the tilt/swivel. It's in nearly the same position I had with an actual vent fin clip mount. And I like that I can just set it in the mount with one hand. It's basically just a slot you slide it down into. I had a spring mount previously that I was able to barely get in with one hand, but it was awkward.
This one is also covered in some sort of felt-like material. And not just the slot that the phone sits into - the front and back of the mount are covered in it.

Also - if you're looking to buy, I was able to find a 10% off coupon via Google that saved a couple $$ - which is good if you're buying the piece for your car and the actual mount.

Yup proclip is the way to go. Like I said in the beginning of the thread I've been using the same holder for years with no issues.

my iOttie onetouch 3 seems to hold it well with a case on it it. I think the case lifts it just enough so the side grips don't touch the volume down button.

I was really impressed with Cygnett MagMount 360 Magnetic Dash and Window Car mount when I brought it with the phone without even doing any research not knowing if it's going to fit Pixel or hold its device well. Surprisely it does do a great job holding the Pixel phone magnetically without any troubles or fuss of cables being in the way. Nicely compact, easy and durable. I highly recommend it. [emoji5]

[Q] Car Mount

Anyone find a good car mount for the Flyer?
What about this
http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-SM517-W...7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312330080&sr=1-7
I looked at that but was hoping to find something with a goose neck that won't cost an arm and a leg.
I'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Windsh...TF8&coliid=I1KF8PQQC8DSBD&colid=1O6EIA62KNIE2
or
http://www.amazon.com/Holder-Samsun...ternet/dp/B004JPQKX8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
with arkon..the flyer only in landscape..and not in portrait;is it correct?
I have the arkon car mount
The Flyer is held in by tension (spring inside). You pull down the bottom part, insert the flyer and release. It holds on pretty tight so it should work in portrait mode. Most of the holders are interchangeable with their bases so you can get a suction cup base, a vent clip base, or a goose neck.
FYI:
The holder will also hold my iTouch, Droid, or Blackberry too.
This one is shown on the Arkon website with a gooseneck base. http://www.arkon.com/accessories/tablet_car_mount.html
You can get it at amazon http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-20-Inch-Flexible-BlackBerry-PlayBook/dp/B004MYF10E/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1312398289&sr=1-1
I have the tablet holder from RAM mount... It holds my Flyer while in my "folio type" case. They have a gooseneck which uses your seat bolts for attaching to the car... It's a litttle rigid, but if you get it in the "right" position it Will stay put. If you're looking for a windshield or dash mount they have the normal suction cup base option. I have the magnetic base mount which I move from my desk to gym. The nice thing about the system is you can interchange the bases and holders for other device holders... But this can get pricey also.
Sorry I don't have the link handy, Google RAM mounts... Should come up, I purchased online from a store in Seattle called NPI.
car mount for HTC Flyer
Have you looked at Brodit holder?
I have this one and it works great for my phone and tablet:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V3NPW2
Its hold is shockingly good.
For those of you who have windshield mounts do you find that a 7" tab is a bit too big to have sitting in the front? Does it block your view?
I would get the side mount, but I don't like the idea of drilling and screwing things in to the side of my car.

I bought this and it's ok. If you have a case, the mount does not grab the tablet at all because of its thickness. The little arms are simply not long enough. I had to cut mine to make them lock the tablet. If you are willing to do 15 mins of modding. might worth it.
It blocks a good bit of my windshield on my car, so I am trying to figure out how to mount it onto or slightly below my head unit. However, on my girlfriend's truck, there is plenty of space.

Same mount... No case in this picture, but I can say firsthand that it works fine with a silicone case. It held the tablet for a 1200 mile trip until the tape on the dash puck gave out 10 miles from home. I can get a clearer picture this weekend if one is wanted.
Like you mentioned though, it did block much of the right hand side of the windshield from the drivers seat. Cops didn't seem to care though. Lol.
I also have an arkon gooseneck mount in my truck, also holds fine with a silicone case, no modding necessary. However, if it only sat up higher, I'd be content. Nothing some threaded rod and a coupler can't fix.

Without the case it works quite well. Did you have to mod your arms at all?
Also, I fond it very annoying to use the buttons on the bottom as the little arms would get in the way.
Since then I have gotten Button Savior which makes buttons pop out on the screen like on HC. You gotta be rooted though.
Nope, didn't have to mod. With the case it was a bit tight. The spring loaded arm was slightly bowed due to being at full stretch.
My mount didn't come with the j-hook arms, so no interference with the buttons.
The cobra holder looks great but not sure about holding power. Has someone tested how much it hols, can't believe that it holds the flyer when driving a little harder
Even with the money I'd save him, it's still at least half an arm and leg. Nicest holders out and there though. And they'll only fit a bare tablet. I've tried to get them to do an adjustable one to fit multiple 7" tablets, but they kept shooting me down. Maybe with the Nook Tab and Kindle Fire, they'll reconsider.

How big of a diameter is the suction cups of the Arkon?
It's a single cup, 3" in diameter.
Also, I snapped some pics of the detachable part of the mount on the Flyer with both a Rocketfish case and a generic silicone one... Picture taking isn't my strong suit, so pardon the not so good quality :|
First, here's the gooseneck in my Trailblazer... the left front nut on the passenger seat was loosened up and it mounts there.

sweet thanks for the pictures!
one more question, how much more does the legs extend out?
ordered a Multi Angle 360 Stand Up Case and it would be great to leave case in when mounting.
That's as far as it stretches out, so it's a tight fit. You might get a kit that has a pair of longer legs to give another inch or so of clearance.

I had to cut into mine so that the silicone case would not slide out. If the arms were only about 10mm longer with more of a slope, it would work sooo much better.

Great Car dock for the N3! Best $12.99 I have ever spent.

I just got this in the other day and I dont like it at all.......... I LOVE IT!
Im using it in my 2013 Fiat Abarth. the car is lowered and can ride hard.
The Note 3 does not move or bounce at all.
I always use my device in the car in landscape mode, no button interference, etc.
Does not cover the Stereo display and puts the device in the perfect spot.
easy 1 handed in and out.
I ordered a 5 pack of NFC decals to have it launch car mode ultra and kick on my bluetooth audio connection.

Can you have a CD in the player at the same time? Not that it matters too much in my Honda because I have a separate 5 disc changer. But in my Jeep there's only the one.

Thanks for the NFC tip.
Those stick into the cd player right? Does it impede the ability to use CDs?
I had decided to buy one of these until I read a bunch of reviews that said that the dock tears up your cd player and the molding around it. Apparently, the longer it's in there the looser it gets. You have to retighten it and in doing so over and over it breaks the molding around the outside and the cd player slot. While I don't listen to cd's any more, I certainly don't want to have to pay several hundred bucks to repair something I don't use. Good luck, hope this doesn't happen to you.
For what it's worth, I did grab the iBolt car dock and it's pretty slick.
Looks kind of flimsy.

I have one of these that will hold a Nexus 7, it can be flimsy depending on the car and how wide its CD slot it. I've used it in 15 or so cars when renting and some cars you have to take all the pads off just to get it into the CD slot, some cars you have to use the thickest pads and its still not 100% tight in the CD slot. I'm happy not using it in any car I actually own because I can easily see depending on the vehicle how it will eventually crack the plastic above and below the cd slot... more so if there are buttons close to the slot and the plastic is slim.
Be aware...
My deck has the CD slot hidden behind the screen, it would be nice and cleaner to insert this into the dash (between the plastics). How thick is the insert on this dock??
Thanks!
I heard so many bad things about these ruin the CD player so I wouldn't take a chance.
This is what I am using in my car. It's perfect. With a little practice, I can put in and out the phone with one hand. It's shaky a bit when the road is rough but pretty stable. So far, I love it.
Mount on any flat surface. My car always park under the 90 degree sun whole day and I only have to restick it twice within 3 months.

I think he's referring to the mountek Ngroove Snap, one I recently picked up
Unfortunately, I got one and it doesn't let you use NFC or wireless charging if you use the magnet and keep it under your battery cover, so I'm returning it and ordered the Exomount Touch CD instead, same concept, no magnet, not as easy to mount and unmount, but I still get NFC and the ability to use wireless charging. Was about to order this, but I didn't because I prefer the positioning of the CD slot mounts vs the suction cup mount on the windshield or dashboard, and it's way better than mounting it in the air vents.
Plus that LG one doesn't have ANY reviews anywhere, videos or anything and I want something proven, sturdy and with a good placement in my car. I already know this about the exomount because it's the same as my magnetic dock, and it has a nice video on their site demoing it too, looks awesome!

Many people have written about that mount. It's not by LG, but it is LG compatible, meaning it was designed to hold the LG WCP-300 Qi charger. I've had one for a few moths and it's pretty good. Instead of using the suction cup I mounted it on the dash.

I can use NFC and Wireless charging just fine. I use the thicker plate and stick it right under my camera lense hole and it holds up great and I can still use wireless charging. I'm not in the car enough to use wireless in there and having a wire all the time looks dirty which is not why I use this mount
I received this dock this week after waiting about 2 weeks. It feels like a pretty sturdy build and holds the phone with no problem. Fits nicely in the CD slot on my 2009 Pontiac G6 although it does block the display which is kind of annoying.

Proclip universal car mount

I've had a Proclip mount system for 8 years now, in 2 cars and with 5 phones now. The universal mount I'd had lasted through an iPhone 3GS, a Galaxy S2, a Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Unfortunately it couldn't accommodate the N6, so I purchased on of their larger ones which arrived today. It's pictured here with a naked N6, but will also work with the Spigen case I should be receiving Monday.
This is the one I bought --> http://goo.gl/tA2buI

Thanks for the heads up. I was just thinking about this. I have the smaller universal mount, and it does fit with my Spigen Neo Hybrid, but JUST barely! I plan on getting a beefier case, so I need to get a bigger universal mount.
Thanks!

Wow, I just measured. The Nexus 6 with a Spigen Neo Hybrid is nearly 3.5" wide. The Large Universal mount accomodates up to 3.5" wide. No love for a bigger case on the N6

Be sure to check out some of their other large(r) universal mounts. They have some that'll accommodate larger cases.
Thanks for the heads up. I am in the same boat as you were in. Love the proclip and its worked on the last 3 phones I have had but N6 is just to wide for it.
I read on another thread that they are releasing a N6 specific model but would much rather just get this instead of waiting 2-3 months for it to come out.
Never had an proclip, could somebody explain how they work? I see on their site they have custom dash mounts for specific cars but can't figure out how the phone mount fits to the dash mount. Also, can it be easily taken out with 1 hand once all set up?
The phone mount screws into the car mount. I have also used their mounts for years but always the phone specific model that's hard wired. I like that it just pop out in and it charges no cord to plug in before I put it in the holder.
So it's is a 1 handed operation? I like the ram X mount but needing to use 2 hands is a drawback.
I have a universal phone mount attached to a car mount that attaches to the a-pillar of my driver's side. its easy one-handed to pop my phone in or out. Here are stock pictures of what I use:
I bought the proclip for my Garmin a few years back. It is awesome. Might have to look at one for my N6.

Its basically 2 parts. The car specific mount and then the phone mount. If you switch phones you can just get a new phone mount witch screws to your already in place car mount.
They are a bit more expensive but are rock solid and the mounts are custom designed for each car model.
If you switch holders from car to car like I do, their locking move clip system is awesome http://www.proclipusa.com/accessories/locking-move-clips/locking-move-clip-accessories.aspx
I had the same problem - long time ProClip user whose universal mount used for the Nexus 5 wasn't big enough to hold the new Nexus 6. I just took the holster apart, removed the swivel component that limits how wide the holster arms can expand, stuck it back with super glue, filed the edges and put it all back together. It works
They are running a sale right now too. Trying to decide if I should get the universal one or the Note 4 holder. N6 holder doesn't sound like it will be out for at least another month.

So with the universal mounts you don't get forward/backward movement of the phone? Do the sides squeeze enough to hold it in place or something even though the phone may be thinner than the slot in the mount?

There is a little bit of movement (all of my phones have had some in their universal mounts), but it's still held firmly and doesn't move on it's own. With my Spigen Perfect-fit case it's actually a great fit.
I've always used the device specific ones that have an integrated charging cable. What do you folks do to handle charging in the car?

I'll bet this combination would work: a large universal thick holder with an anker ultra-slim wireless charging pad glued to it.

Can you tell me if there is 0.2 inches of space behind the phone in which to glue a wireless charger?

I don't have the phone, the mount, or the charger, so, no.
But according to the specs of all three, there is enough room. However, there may be a problem with the diameter of the charger. It may be slightly too large for the prongs of the mount to close all the way. That could probably be fixed by putting a little padding on the prongs, though.

CD car mount: which is the best that fits our Nexus 6?

Hi,
Getting tired from the Chinese mount and looking to buy a good solid one.
If you can please give me some recommended ones ׂׂ(prefer the regular - not magnetic) i will be thankful for that.
iOttie
Koomus
Ppyple
???
Mountek are also good...but too big, dont u think?
But maybe they still the best choice?
As you can notice, I already make a research.
Looks like there a lot for up to 5.5" devices BUT hardly NOTHING for devices such as the N6.
Thanks very much!
Try Brodit.
They are not for a cd-slot, but they have a system for each car (ventilation clips/anglemount/cupholder) an they use the same color as the interior so it looks like stock.
Go to http://www.brodit.com/brodit.html, select phone (Motorola Nexus 6 obvious) note down the id of the head you like (active holder 2A charging = 513704).
Then select your car and note down the id of the base and find the cheapest seller somewhere in your country.
In my case E61 BMW 530d anglemount http://www.brodit.com/product.html?id=853283&pn=&brand=BMW&model=520-545/M5 E60, E61&year=2010

Suggestion - flexible case mod and a neodymium a magnet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38969143#post38969143
Note: the Nexus 6 has a built in magnet sensor, behind the M logo, that sensor switches of the display.
When using a magnet system, the position of the magnet must be below the M logo.
@homer667
@NLBeev
Thanks very much for the info'!
But i dont want it on the dash or on the front pane.
At the end I bought 2 models (1 regular and 1 magnet):

Google 'neodymium magnet' or eBay.
The neodymium magnets are strong. For my N6 I use a round neodymium of 25mm x 3 mm.
Such a type is needed because of the weight of an N6.
I am using a cheap ultra thin case with a metal ring fixed with superglue. Because the back of the N6 is not flat, you have to manipulate the metal at the back (bowing).
The magnet is glued on the dashboard with double sided tape. There is tape that can be removed without damaging the dashboard.
In practice I am using two cases. One modded for use in the car and a clean one for normal use.
The ultra thin cases are easier to remove than the so called hard cases.
@NLBeev
Tnx for all the info'!
But I already ordered a CD Car Mount(2 models) and I just want a thin magnet for the 1 model that works with magnet.
Do you know if 1 "Strong Neodymium magnet" of 10x10x1mm would handle it?

10x10x1mm neodymium magnet is NOT Strong enough to hold the weight of a Nexus 6.
Because the back of the N6 is NOT you need a much stronger magnet. Probably 25x25x5mm.

The metal plate could be OK. Before mounting/glueing you need to mod it so that is fits perfectly the round back of the N6.
I bought the 'ball' magnet holder that's in the link. This magnet system did not work well with my N6. Because the metal must be fixed 5 mm or more below the M-logo. The N6 did not stay in a stable position.

I always glued the metal on the outside of the case. Using superglue and pressure.
When you want the metal in the inside (as shown on the picture). Do some trial and error by fixing the metal temporarily at the inside of the case with transparent tape. The width of that tape must be about 5 cm.
I have just done some testing with a very powerful vent mount thing (has 4 tiny neo mags in it) and if you get too close to the M logo it definitely sleeps it. As long as you are careful though, it can work.
The magnets are just not strong enough to grip the metal plate THROUGH a case due to the sheer weight of this beast.
I am probably going to go with Gorilla Gluing the plate to the outside of the case and pop the phone out of the case when I leave the car.
Shame that Juicy Case doesn't make a N6 case. The one I got from them for my G3 has a built-in magnet that works WITH the vent mount one to secure it VERY well.
In fact, the magnet in the case would stick the phone to the refrigerator or a file cabinet easily!.
Just received my Mountek Grip+, it's the last phone mount I'll need as long as the car has a CD player.

The clamps go wide enough to hold tablets!
@sman789
Mountek are great.
But I didnt understand why they started a campaign in Indiegogo.
It's not delivers something we didn't knew about the older model.
Just the gel pads and that it can holds even a tablets.
I started using the Car Mount TechMatte MagGrip CD Slot Magnetic
It holds up the Nexus 6 great!

How exactly are you using the magnet mount with the 6? I have the Mountek Snap from the previous Indiegogo campaign as well as various magnetic mounts. No matter what case and magnet add on I used, the curvature of the Nexus 6 made it extremely unstable.

Hey dog! I'll share with you my experience with this: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Installation-Smartphone-Samsung-BlackBerry/dp/B00VEAF6SG
It will NOT hold the weight of the N6 in the long run. I have one that I had to modify with screws to properly support the weight after the stops or 'clicks' inside the holder wear out. I'll post pics later on tonight.
The best Mount you cab get is Ram Mount just do a search in amazon. They are expensive but they will last and hold your phone securely.

Is it safe to use a magnetic mobile holder?

Is it safe to use a magnetic mobile phone holder with the LG V30? I just bought a used V30 and I have a dash mount magnetic holder that I used with a phone that did not have wireless charging and I don't want to brick the V30 with it if that is a problem. Thanks for any advice.
Been using that for months with no issues.

Thank you very much for the reply and good news. :good:
To offer some additional clarification and reassurance: phone eMMC isn't affected by magnetism (not at these levels anyway), the compass is probably a hall-effect electronic compass and far less susceptible to nearby magnets than a traditional compass would be, and anything else delicate (like the camera stabilization) is far enough away from the mount to not be bothered by it.
Also, you stick a steel plate on the back of your phone for the magnet to attract; this plate itself shields to an extent and is directly between your phone and the magnet. That combined with magnetic force having a very short range means that not much magnetism is reaching the phone to begin with.
Thanks for your information as well. I will be using my phone for navigation as I did with my LG Stylo 3. I didn't ever have any issues with it as well. I use one of the CD magnetic mounts and I really like it for it's stability. My V30 is on order and should arrive soon though. I hope I can easily transfer my apps and settings to it as I did my G2 to the Stylo 3. I don't perceive any problems with that though.
My wife and I have been using magnetic mounts in our cars for years... no phone has ever had an issue.
The compass usually flakes out and points the wrong way (while mounted to the magnet), but most GPS software ignores it when you get moving and points towards the direction you're moving, so it's a non-issue. When the phone is removed from the mount, the compass goes back to normal.

Thank you for sharing your experience as well. I had wondered how the magnet would affect the phone's compass. It is good to know that it does no permanent damage.
Alright, i have an issue with using magnetic mount. I completely love the convenience it offers but if i receive any call, and the phone is on magnetic mount, then the other person simply can't hear me. I have to take the phone off the mount and then call is fine. I usually put the phone on speaker when i get the call, and no one has ever been able to hear me when the phone is on the mount.
Anyone else getting this issue?

Not me. Again, multiple phones, many years, zero issues. I don't use speaker as much these days, as I have bluetooth on the car, but when I did have to use speaker (when BT wasn't working properly for whatever reason) speaker still worked fine. This is on my old Galaxy S3, Droid Turbo (aka Motorola Maxx), and current V30 phones. This was also with my own phone and my wifes (we usually had the same phones at the same time).
As far as I can recall the only phones that have issues with magnetic mounts are those that have digitizers with tech similar to Wacom tablets. The Samsung note series had an issue with magnetic cases causing issues with the functionality of the digitizer to degrade or fail. I'm not sure it was fixable afterwards as my note 4 succumbed to the dreaded emmc failure and I avoided magnetic devices near the phone as much as possible to prevent digitizer issues.
To answer about the V30, I've been using a magnetic mounts with mine and have had zero issues. Also, I purchased it second hand and the case had the Scosche metal plate on the back indications the previous owner also used the magnetic mounts.
@freduser, I am glad that you mentioned the Scosche steel plate as that is the brand of magnetic holder that I use. I am now confident that there will be no issues in using this mount.

Just be aware you can't use Qi wireless charging with a metal plate in between phone and the Qi wireless charging pad.
For me Qi wireless charging is my "line in the sand." Since 2013, I've only bought phones with that feature and will not ever consider one without that feature.
So I use windshield clamp in the car.

@ChazzMatt. Thanks for the heads up but I don't plan on using any wireless chargers in my car. And since I will have the metal plate on the phone's protective outer case, I probably won't be using a wireless charger at home as I don't think it would be as efficient with all of the layers inbetween the charger and phone. I do appreciate your input on the subject though.
Good point @ChazzMatt... the metal plate will also probably block NFC (payment processing)... so be aware of that, too.
I've considered a clamp-bracket for our phones for these reasons (I don't use wireless charging, but I may try NFC)... any good vent-mounted ones I should consider?

Since I do not use the NFC function for any reason, That is not a concern of mine.
I have never know any of my friends that liked the vent mounted phone holders as they said they were shaky. I didn't want to stick any mounts to my dash so I opted for the CD mount and in my opinion, it is very sturdy. Other than that one, I have used the windshield suction cup mounts with a large suction cup for extra stability. Good luck in your search.

My wife uses this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077B2ZZ9V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm not saying it's "fantastic!" -- but I bought two for her to try and this is the one she kept.
I edited my post above to reflect I actually use windshield suction clamp, not "dashboard" clamp. It hangs over the dashboard.
I have never seen a vent mount with a lower support like that one has. That is a good idea.

Yeah, I'd prefer a different mount, but I hate windshield ones as they fall off all the time and they're sometimes unwieldy. Vent mounts have worked well for us so far. Plus, my Caddy doesn't even have a dashboard CD player... so I can't consider that option either.
@ChazzMatt - that looks like a good potential option... maybe I'll grab it while it's on sale today! Thanks for the tip.
EDIT: Note, that holder says it won't work on vertical vents... weird. Again, the friggen Caddy has verticals in the center console. My wife's VW has horizontal, and she needs something now, so we're getting it anyway. Let's see how it goes!
Received the mounts today (crazy how Amazon gets things shipped so quickly). I'm not happy that it's a "Mac" product (made by MacAlly) but it certainly is nice. I don't see why they say it won't work on vertical vents, since the clip swivels... I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I put it on the car. Looks well made though, and they appear to have thought about the details, which is nice.
Thanks again!
