Cm recovery to twrp - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Havin a little issue with my girlfriends i9100. Flashed clockwork recovery and cm12. 1 but somehow the recovery changed to cyanogenmod recovery and i cant seem to get rid of it in order to install gapps. Neither heimdall nor adb did work in order to Flash twrp. Flashify/twrp Manager didnt work for gapps flash either. Any suggestions?

You could try this:
Download latest cm 11 nightly
In cm recovery got to apply update and flash cm11.
Reboot then in recovery (should be cwm) flash again latest cm 12.1 together with "isorec- twrp recovery 3.0.2-1.zip by the.gangster" in one go (important!)
Then you have latest twrp for flashing anything and also for incrasing partition (System/data) for flashing bigger packages of gapps or cm 13 with gapps (here incrasing System and data partition is a "must")

Just to add: i never tried to flash twrp.zip in cm recovery so i am not sure if it works (would save some Step from above

Hi Friend,
CM official roms come with default recovery mode just like the official google roms have there official recoveries cm have.
here is what you will do what you need to do (I use Odin)
NOTE:don't Restart your phone, you have to make the steps from 2 to 4 without restart
1-Install any recovery or kernel from Odin to your mobile (that is the only way to get rid of cm recovery) VERY IMPORTANT!!!
2- open the recovery you installed and flash the rom that you want
3- flash the gapps (optional)
4- flash this file https://dl.twrp.me/i9100/twrp-3.0.2-0-i9100.img (VERY IMPORTANT To Be In The Same Order)
now restart your phone your phone must open now with the new rom, open the recovery mode after the restart to check
VERY IMPORTANT reply to me, I want to know if it worked with you
Thanks,

Hi
Just want to mention 2 things:
You cannot use any recovery to install cm12 of above. It must be at least a KK compatible recovery.
And not all recoveries can flash .img-files (and the latest version of twrp is 3.0.2-1 of which @the.gangster made a .zip-file for us to use).
Regards

Yes your instructions are correct when using kk recovery and isorec- rec .zip.
Of course there are more ways to do it like by the great @Lanchon in this thread (MOD) IsoRec: Isolated recovery for Galaxy S 2 on Page 53 Post # 529.

You ll need root access and the app superuser!
Get the .img file from first post.
Get an terminal emulator from market and open it.
We ll flash it via dd on terminal.
Move the .img to internal sd via file explorer.
In terminal first type su.
The command for flashing is in the first post. Begins with dd.

How are you flashing it? There are 2 ways you can flash this recovery, in the recovery that you have installed and Odin. Either should work. I would use your recovery first though and of that doesn't work than go with the .tar and use Odin. You can also try Philz to flash it. There are also a couple of apps on Playstore that will help with this process to. Flashify is one and [ROOT] Rashr - Flash Tool is another.
Hope this helps.
Chance favors the prepared.
I had tried both TWRP and Philz in recovery and neither worked, however, I just installed and tried Flashify and it did not work by flashing the zip file as it could not locate if for some reason, but when I downloaded the img file and flashed that it worked immediately. THANK YOU!!!

Stuck in TWRP
I had no idea CWM files cannot be restored with TWRP. I just downloaded latest TWRP and cannot get phone to bootup past Galaxy note 2 logo.I can bootup into TWRP though. Is there a way to disable TWRP to restore back to CWM please? Sorry to bother you all. Thanks in advance.
You need to download CWM .tar and flash with Odin on a PC out laptop. Once you flash CWM recovery with Odin you can boot into that recovery and restore your back up you made. It is either that or try to find CWM in a zip file and flash in TWRP. I don't recall seeing any in a zip format though but I will check for you.

I think that you should be able to use Philz touch recovery to restore CWM backups too. So you may want to flash Philz with your installed TWRP and then after the flash go to the TWRP start screen and hit "reboot"then hit "reboot recovery" and it should bout into Philzs. It is going to say "there is no system installed are you sure you want to reboot" hit yes and it should boy you into Philz.
Like I said I'm not 100%sure it will restore a true CWM backup but i would day that these would be your options. Maybe someone else has anything different to do?

Hope this helps.

Welcome new XDA user,
Right now, you have stock recovery and with stock recovery, you won't be able to flash anything.
In order to flash a different rom, you first need to flash a different kernel or recovery using ODIN.
You can flash a kernel like DorimanX or Gustavo Kernel which contains CWM recovery. From there, you will be able to flash ROMs like normal. You require the .tar kernel files to flash via ODIN. Kitkat or Lollipop kernels will work fine and should allow you to flash most zips. Apolo kernel will also do fine too.

Did you make sure your phone was in download mode (volume down + home button + power key) when using ODIN? Rom manager is an old application and shouldn't work on CM13. Instead, the app flashify should work better, that's if root is enabled of course (development settings, enable root for apps).
regards, gsstudios
To add to what @gsstudios has said.....
I seem to remember reading that rom manager breaks things on the S2.....specifically I recall it being mentioned that it breaks recovery mode....
Probably best not to use it as if it hasn't broken things yet, it eventually will do.....

Can you attempt to boot to recovery using the correct button sequence?
Boot to recovery with this button combo:
VOLUME DOWN + HOME + POWER
Hold all 3 buttons until you see the blue text in the top left corner of the screen that says:
RECOVERY BOOTING
Also, see if you can boot to DOWNLOAD MODE
Boot to download mode using this button combo:
VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER
If you can boot to recovery, which you said was TWRP, select WIPE, then swipe across to Factory Reset. That might take you out of the boot loop.
If that doesn't allow you to boot normally try to boot to DOWNLOAD MODE and flash a the stock firmware through Odin. If you were running 5.1.1 then flash the stock 5.1.1 firmware for your device and country. You can download the stock firmware from www.sammobile.com. You will have to create an account first. Let me know if you can even boot to recovery or download mode.

When you boot to TWRP, connect to your PC and see if your PC will recognize your device. Then look in Computer and see if you can see the internal storage/sdcard. If you can then you can download a custom ROM and flash it through TWRP. If not, then boot to download mode and flash the stock firmware through Odin.
I put the stock firmware back on, Is my phone still rooted? and will i be able to try using xposed or will i have to start over again?
If you used Odin to flash the stock firmware then your are NOT ROOTED and cannot use Xposed. Now that you have a fresh install, start all over. Take your time and follow whatever instructions you are using. Good luck and let me know if you need any more help.

Okay. Here is the link for CF Autoroot (see below) that you need to flash through Odin in the AP slot. Scroll down the page and find SM-G920F. There is a download link over to the right side of the page. This is the easiest way to root your device.
CF AUTOROOT - https://autoroot.chainfire.eu
Now, for a custom recovery. There are 2 ways to install TWRP.
1) You can download TWRP Manager from the Play Store and let it install TWRP for you or...
2) You can download the TWRP TAR file and flash it through Odin. Here is the download link to TWRP for Odin. I recommend the Odin installation. You already have Odin open and it's super easy.
https://dl.twrp.me/zeroflte/
Select the latest version which is this:
twrp-3.0.2-1-zeroflte.img.tar
These steps will get you rooted with a custom recovery installed. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
Cheers fast!

If it boots to stock recovery then the stock rom is replacing TWRP with the stock recovery. Once you are able to boot to TWRP it will patch the stock ROM. Since you are rooted, download TWRP Manager from the Play Store and install recovery that way and once it says it's installed it will ask you if you'd like to boot to TWRP recovery. Lemme look at the Xposed info and I'll post back shortly. Lemme know what happens with the recovery install.

How to install TWRP straight from Samsung's default Recovery option?

Hi,
I have the i9100 device. I just flashed Samsung's default Stock ROM on it, using ODIN and it is booting.
I want to know how to install root and then TWRP on this now?
The problem is, TWRP is only releasing an IMAGE file and not a zip or a tar file.
How do I flash this IMAGE into my recovery partition? What is the recommended way of doing it. None of these tutorials are explaining this to me.
Do I have to install CWM first? I am confused. If you can give me a step-by-step overview of what to do, that would be great.
Thanks

- Install in stock-recovery philz cwm 6 Kernel (root).zip (in apply Update)
- make a Backup
- update to kk compatible Recovery Like cwm 6.0.4.7.zip
- with kk compatible Flash latest unofficial cm 11 20161222.zip by zjq985063714 together with recovery-the.gangster-IsoRec-TWRP-3.0.2-1.zip.
- in twrp recovery Flash lanchons repit Tool which ist a zip-file. Use 1 GB vor System 4 GB for Data.
Now you are able to flash any rom up to Nougat.
If you would have searched enough you would have found all this in the Forum.

Please clarify...
Hi,
What I am planning to do tomorrow is
a) Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip - this gives me root and CWM recovery
b) Then go into CWM recovery, and flash the IsoRec_TWRP_3.0.0-0_i9100.zip - Will this work?
c) Then I go to TWRP recovery, and then install REPIT, then CM ROM, and then Gapps-pico.
- How this deviates from your quote is;
a) Why do I need the philz cwm 6 Kernel (root).zip ? Is this a pre-req for CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip ?
b) Why flash the cm 11 20161222.zip if I am going with the latest CM 12+ later?
Please clarify... thanks.

Hi zetret
I prefer philz because it is a save kernel (can be done in many other ways like yours)
For flashing twrp3 you need isorec kernel otherwise twrp will not show up.
That's why I use cm11 which has isorec kernel.
And I can there also use triangle away ( doesn't work on latest builds).
and because large roms like cm 13/14 and I think cm12 with large gapps cannot be installed right away because installation will get stuck.
that's why I install cm11 as step in between to increase partitions first.
You do not have to boot cm11 - boot just twrp to continue.
There are many ways to do all this (could flash isorec kernel.....)
to me it's a simple and clean way without using pc

Hi dhrubaz
Please use google search as i mentioned the proper file-names for this purpose.
(I would also have to search).
For philz cwm6 i9100 stock kernel you have to look for the right version according to your buildnumber.
For exampel: PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.87-i9100.zip

Ignore this guy from Vienna
Just ignore the other guy. Most of the things he mentions are unnecessary or out of date. Just follow the three steps I mentioned in my post. That works.

You are giving people wrong advice. @Lanchon himself told you this will not work

@zetret
I'm replying to you here because it is getting OT in the other threads
The best advise I can give(and one of the core rules of XDA) is start searching in XDA, searching on the internet for the answers to your questions. This site is not for spoon-feeding everyone who is new to this.
But to try to clear up a couple of things:
The original kernel partition in the S2(i9100) "housed" the kernel and recovery together. This is why when you install an older kernel(pre isorec) you are over-writing both the kernel and recovery. So if the kernel is not compatible with the rom, then you will get a bootloop if you try to boot into the system. You can still use this recovery however. You need to decide if you are flashing the kernel to use the kernel to boot the rom OR use the recovery even if the kernel is no good to you.
Isorec changed this. Instead of using the bundled recovery in the kernel(it is still there), you are using the new isorec recovery in the previously unused recovery partition(once you have flashed it there). Once you have flashed the isorec recovery it will stay there. No need to flash it again. An isorec kernel is needed to recognize and boot the isorec recovery, otherwise the bundled recovery will be used.
Please use the search function in future. This is only spoon-feeding I will give.
I apologize. These steps only work if there current Kernel you have is "isorec" compatible. For the Kernel that I had on one of my devices, I went to its thread, and searched for "isorec" and there was no mention of it - which apparently here means that it is not compatible.
If you don't have a Kernel that is isorec compatible, please follow the suggestion offered below, and get to an "isorec" compatible Kernel like 'Siyah-Dorimanx-V8.70-JB-SGII-PWR-CORE-DRAGON-TRIM". I will try this and update this thread later.

@zetret
so you still think it is not rude to say about me:
"Just ignore the other guy. He does not know what he is talking about"
(and you gave wrong advice at the same time)
and in Lanchon isorec thread you said also to me in post 546:
"........You have also shown no understanding of what isosrec means......"
So this is coming from you, a person who had at this time not even the basic knowledge about isorec
only by asking in lanchons thread NOW you found out about the need of isorec compatible kernel.
(which i already told you BEFORE in post 4).p
Now you keep in Lanchons thread complaining and blaiming others why you did not know and unterstand isorec.
You should really show some respect for people here like @the.gangster who is giving the community a lot of support and detailed knowledge in many posts.
For future...
To anyone reading in the future, this is just an overview of what to do.
#: Backup your contacts and photos to your laptop.
a) Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip - this gives you root and CWM recovery
b) Now, backup your current (Android 4.1.2+root) and reboot to recovery
- If at any point, anything fails, you can restore this and start again.
c) Wipe everything (Factory reset+cache)
d) Install CWM version (philz_touch_6.25.0-i9100.zip) for i9100 from here (https://mega.nz/#F!oZ1QDDbC!Ko20UNhowwIlXLVFjJsyKw!lR9AARIa)
- This upgrades your CWM and is apparently a step needed to get to TWRP.
e) Install any IsoRec compatible Android custom ROM and don't reboot
- Check this for more info: (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nofficial-i9100-cyanogenmod-11-build-t3405634)
f) Install a compatible TWRP file that some people have packaged as a ZIP! If you go to the official downloads folder, you will ONLY find an IMAGE file and for new users, we don't know what to do with that.
- Search for something like recovery-the.gangster-IsoRec-TWRP-3.0.2-1-i9100.zip
g) Reboot to recovery
h) You should be able to see TWRP now!
i) Now, you can install Lanchon's REPIT. If you need more help - follow wonderful guides like this to get everything up and running -
__a) http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-r...0-1-marshmallow-rom-on-galaxy-s2-repartition/
__b) For ROM installation: http://highonandroid.com/android-ho...-marshmallow-rom-using-twrp-failproof-method/
j) Thanks! and if I missed some steps and made it difficult to understand, please correct me. I failed many times and wrote this from my memory and therefore, some things may be missing.
Also, the first three steps above may not be necessary. For some reason, Step 'd' failed for me initially from Stock Rom and I had to do step 'a', but this may not be the case for you. Having that backup in Step 'b' is worth it.
# Restore your contacts and photos from your laptop.

could you please instruct simply and also provide download links for all the required files
right now on stock 4.1.2 and flashed CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip
that's it
now please provide required file links and instruct from here
thx...
Anyone...?
@hacker1911
I'd still recommend you to follow either post #2 or this one which is slightly outdated but still valid. Only syntax of repit.zip changed (needs units now) and the IsoRec-twrp in step 7 is meanwhile available as version 3.0.2-1. But if you read both, you should be able to succeed.
Hi, you cannot flash it straight,
so you can follow my step-by-step tutorial for flashing Recovery +/- ROM and +/- reformat.

I figured this one out
To use Philz CWM 6, do I have to downgrade from 5.0.1 to 4.4.x? Or will it work with 5.0.1?
