LG G5 hollow sound when tapping the middle of the screen - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hey. Just got my new LG G5, but I've noticed something weird. Namely, when I tap the middle of my screen it sounds and feels a bit different, like either the screen was raised there or there was nothing beneath it. I'm wondering if I'm the only one experiencing it.
EDIT: The best test is to repeatedly start tapping it in the middle in quiet surroundings and then move to edges and say if you can hear and feel the difference.
UPDATE: LG's support response is that if the touchscreen works properly there is no basis for RMA.

Bump.

Is there a screen protector on it? If not definitely not normal. I'd ship that to LG asap. I am not experience this issue and haven't heard of it from others.
Side note man I feel bad for a lot of you users. I don't got any of these issues so many of yall have. LG G6 will definitely wait few months before I get it. Had a few lower-mid range LG phones. A lot of these issues seem to carry over to LG G5. Which is unacceptable for a flagship device.

No screen protector, but maybe it's because of the modular build? It makes sense that it wouldn't sound so hollow near the edges, since the phone has something underneath it there, whereas beneath the middle of the screen there's only a battery, which is removable, so it might not be just built too well. I suppose that I should ask LG themselves about it. Anyway, thanks for your comment.

Yeah I was thinking that too. I am not noticing this issue. Maybe other's could give feedback for him? My sense of touch not the best lol. LG might be of help. I do notice that on a lot of threads lol. Maybe 3-5 comments and 100+ views.

I have the same problem but the noise is slightly different but not too different unless you're trying hard to hear it. How severe is this problem for you?

You may want to consider the fact that other people viewing this thread have no such issue with their handset and have no input to give? The obvious solution would be to send it back to LG if you are unhappy with it...or..live with it?
It does not appear to be an issue with the actual functioning of the handset though..

My G5 actually makes some strange noise when you shake it. Kind of like something went loose.
But it only happens when one specific battery unit is inserted.
I didn't measure the the thickness but I assume it's related the little difference in thickness of these batteries I have.
Hope this might help.

If they don't have the issue then they can simply vote "no" in the poll.

That would make sense. They might have left some space there in case the battery is thicker, so that it wouldn't get stuck.

If I'm in quite surroundings I can clearly hear the difference. I don't notice it that much when I'm in a busy place.

Does it rattle?

With all the praise for the solid construction of this device I was surprised to hear mine rattle slightly when setting it down on the sofa.
Try holding your phone in your right hand and tap the top edge at the rear with your right index finger.
Does yours rattle too?
Dont have the device yet, but its not surprising to hear that. Although Samsung has done a wonderful job with utilizing space to the maximum, it is plastic after all.
Its surprising to me. A top end device like this should not rattle!
i'd bet any amount of money its the auto foxus mechanism in the cmaera lense. every phone i've owned does this when i set it down on a hard surface. my n1 which is solid does it as well.
only way to prove it is attempt to take a photo and shake the phone to simulate the rattle. while the camera turns on the auto focus mechanism, it is no longer "loose" and the rattle will briefly go away. once the photo is snapped the focus mechanism goes back to idle/loose position, so it will then rattle.
Only rattle i have is not a rattle just the noise of hitting hard plastic .Same noise on SGS1
jje
I couldn't hear anything on mine aside from the sound of my finger tapping the plastic. Could it be your back cover? It might not be fully on. I carried mine around for a few hours before realising one of the plastic clips wasn't fully in place.

I think you're right. I've done what you suggested with varying success in changing the pattern of the rattle when constantly tapping the phone whilst touching different areas of the viewfinder.
Ok, maybe this is the auto focus mechanism but is it right and if it is why does it affect some and not others?

I get the same with the back cover off. If I apply gentle pressure to the camera lens it does lessen the rattle a little.
I know we don't go round tapping our phones as a rule but I'm not happy at this.
Just checked mine and no rattle here

More than likely (as with nearly all audio / visual imperfections people find) is that some people have better eyes or ears, or a much quieter environment. Try going to downtown Tokyo and even hearing your phone, let alone a rattle. Meanwhile up in the Drakensburg mountains here, I could probably hear a stone dropping at over a kilometer away.
Less likely is that your phone has a looser camera than others - there are always imperfections in manufacturing, and you might have hit the bad end of the spectrum with the lenses being too small for the holder. If this is the case, a replacement would definitely fix it.
But more than likely it's the first case.
I appreciate what you are saying Ryan but in all honestly, I think it my case it's the second scenario.
I don't go looking for faults but I do expect a premium device with a premium price tag to feel like such. This rattle totally spoils it for me and with a few other niggling little doubts I had about the phone (mainly personal preference) this was the push I needed to prompt me to return the handset.
I won't be getting a replacement. Don't get me wrong, the phone is a very nice phone and is probably the best Android out there currently but again, personal preference and a few little niggles means it's not for me.
Great for those that have no rattle, enjoy your devices as I am sure you will.
It was fun while it lasted anyway

Sorry to hear about this 'rattle' on your unit...why not try at least another unit to see if that 'rattle' is also present there, especially if you think you might have gotten a defective unit...
You seem a bit to be quick at dismissing the device. Almost like you just waited to find a reason to get rid of it.
In any case, I hope I don't have that problem on mine.

well to me its normal since i've explicitly noticed the rattle in every phone i've owned, and learned a while back that it was the auto focus mechanism. so it all depends on your personal opinion i guess, but my hunch is that if exchanged every other one would do it as well. who knows though....

No not at all. There are a few things that I don't like about the SGS2 that had me considering returning it before I even noticed the rattle - this is just what cemented my decision to return it. As said previously though, the annoyances I have with it are down to personal preference and comparison to other devices I have owned.
I'm not in the 'business' or picking faults with something for the sake of it, regardless of brand, I just want quality when I pay a quality price and to me at least this rattle makes the whole thing feel cheap.
Remember those two important words, personal and preference!

I guess I see your point.
I was hoping it was a defective unit rather than a general problem with the SGS2 since I hadn't heard about the rattling.
If I noticed something like that on mine, I probably would be bothered too.
yes i agree too. if it's a defective unit, just exchange with another one while it's still under warranty.
just keep that in mind. there are no other devices out there that can match with SGII at this point. What is your second choice, if I may ask?

Good question! I don't have one. It would possibly have been the Nexus S but for the irreversible problems with freezing and lock ups - mainly for the feel / size of the handset rather than its features.
I think I will wait a while now ...

Problems with Xperia z2

So far I have see those problems and those make me think twice before buy it.
1- getting too hot easily. Not only when recording 4k videos some users find it getting too hot while browsing Internet. That's not acceptable. I don't want it to be blown off in my hand.
2- screen is dim. I thought that's since I watch the videos on YouTube. Other phones such as samsung s5 and HTC One m8 has got a lot brighter screen. If it is sunny you can see your phone screen that's not good for people especially in hot countries.
3- gap issues. I don't know if this is a big issue but still shouldn't be like that.
4- speakers. So people are happy some people are not. Some people are having issue with income calls they say it's not loud enough and only one speaker works.
Those are so far I can remember/told by people here. Maybe that's why it's been delayed for release who knows.
Do you guys have any other issues with the phone? Please let us know £550 for pay as you go phone is a lot of money I don't wanna regret after I buy it.

1..... All phones these days get warm when in use, id be more concerned if it wasnt heating up, as for the 4k recording it doesnt bother me too much, its not a feature ill be using anytime soon and im assuming the related software can be fine tuned and updated by sony so it doesnt strain the processor as much
2......Im in great britain so not the sunniest place but weather was quite bright over easter weekend and i had no issues seeing the screen outside
3......As long as its not affecting the water resistance, who cares. If in doubt either treat it like any other phone near water or get it tested by sony
4......Speakers im 50/50 on.... the sound is crisp and clear, just not as loud as other phones. The sound is supposed to be mono on an incoming call, it also cuts to one speaker on my blutooth speakers and on my galaxy if i have headphones in and recieve a call the right earphone cuts out

yep id definately be concerned if it didnt heat up while im using it, just about every electrical item i own heats up when in use, if it doesnt then its probably not working properly.......
I dont mind gaps...... as long as they dont affect the waterproofing, my z2 appears to have a couple of (extremely small, less than 1mm) gaps, but im not about hide it away in shame or demand an exchange for a cosmetically perfect handset.......... unless of course they cause the phone to die a watery death, but i doubt that
and finally i'll stick with my overall opinion of the speakers, but as for the one speaker dropping out ignore anything i said, i was mistaking what you was on about with something else.... my bad lol
I have just received my z2 this morning - opened the box and found the phones back glass panel is raised above the edge of the phone in one corner by 1mm or so.. from the Power button to the bottom corner.
It spoils the whole feel of the phone as its easy to catch the glass.. I imagine its going to get damaged quickly
So I now have to contact company I got it from to arrange a swap, or send it off to Sony.. probably at my own expense.
Premium phone and price with not so premium build quality.. This should never have passed Quality Control.

give it back to place you bought. do not give a single penny for returning it. its not your fault and it is not supposed to come out from your pocket. do not get it fixed get a brand new one.
faulty phones make me think again why the z2 is postponed so many weeks ahead. there is definitely something wrong with this phone in one point. overheating, out of shape design, gaps on the top of the device, speakers etc.

Do you think they would have solved all these problems by the start of May (which is when most people get their phone)? If not then all these delays would have been a complete waste of time...

Start of may is not guaranteed for release. Some companies giving date for 24th of may. Hope everybody will be happy at the end of the day but Sony is not doing well so far. Postpone is a really bad start and faulty phones comes up after waiting months or weeks is more disappointing. If you are not ready for launch do not announce your phone.

Oh man there are a lot more problems than I thought. People complaning to Sony directly instead of telling people here . I think Im right with my opinion never buy a newly released phone there are always problems at some point. Wait a month or so and get them after. My wife bought newly s4 when it was out the phone was getting far too hot she was scared to use it cos it might blow off on her hand. we complained and got a brand new one which is okay. All my old iphones were the same some had sound problem some had glass problem.
It seems that Sony were in so much of a rush to assemble the phones to get them 'out there' that quality control suffered big time.
Am gonna make sure that mine is perfect before keeping it even if it means returning it time after time.
Am hoping all of these build issues are solved when its officially released in May

Defect or is everybodys Ultra like this?

As title.
Have a look at video.
Pressure marks on screen.
Second Z ultra thats doing this. First one I had right fun and games with a certain repairer.
Here it is. Do I live with it or send it back?
Thanks for your time ladies and gents.

Hmmm, it's an LCD panel, so it'll do that if you give it a hard press (like your PC monitor and TV), but that's not normal, no. The Ultra's panel is so-called "zero gap", which means that the glass and LCD panel are fused together making it one piece, and not two. That's how they've made it so thin. The glass is also very thin (Dragontrail), so that combination will have some consequences. BUT this doesn't look normal. You're not even tapping hard, so that looks like a defect. I get it too if I press hard, and I mean really hard.

Getting a bit sick of it to be honest. I love the Z Ultra but I`m wondering if I`ll get a good one!

Yeah, that's understandable. I would probably have swapped it again if it's something you notice under regular usage, or just go with a different device altogether.

One more chance to get a good one. Real shame as the Ultra is a fantastic phone. If it wasn`t under warranty I would have stripped it and investigated for myself. Still, never mind.
Would like to hear from anyone else who has had a similar problem.

I had a look at both of mine the other day, one does this on the left side of the screen if I press too hard, the other doesn't seem to do it at all. A symptom of too thin glass/ts/panel and too big?

I think so. But it shouldn`t happen. But then again, the technology was cutting edge. Maybe the Z2 Ultra won`t have these problems.
I have OCD and it really bothers me. Too picky I know but would like it right. I haven`t lost hope with Sony products at all, just think that with something cutting edge there will be flaws...

Quality Concerns

Have had my eye on the G5 for a couple of weeks now. I previously had an LG G3 that went the way of Blue Screen of Death which is making me double think LG. Has anyone had any similar problems with the G5? I see there's quite a few "Boot loop" issues that have plagued the G4.
Thanks!
you can buy it no prob... boot loops are usually software related and not hardware (in case of quality issues, you might think of hardware)
Is it true that the battery in phone body is little bit shaking and you can feel it? Do you have this experience? Is it annoying?

Remember more people will make a post about something wrong with their phone than people who have no issues. Just how things go.
Pretty sure the vast majority of G5 owners have none or very little quality control issues to report about.

Not the case for my G5 at all. The same actually goes for all those other problems people were reporting . I think the G5 got a lot of bad press. It's still a flagship phone from a reputable manufacturer - and I suspect that with the vast majority of devices, you get exactly the kind of quality which you'd expect.

If you get a second battery and regularly change it every day, I guarantee it will get observably looser within the first few weeks to a month. It used to be so hard to pull my chin out, and then it would always be quite a resistant "snap" when pulling the battery. But, now, both pop out with ease.
I definitely feel the battery a bit looser if I'm holding just the chin with the battery in it and shake it. I don't know that I would say it's noticeable inside the phone, though.

That's It...I'm Done. Goodbye LG G6 First Chance I Get.

I, like many others across the web (and some non-web silent ones) have experienced spider cracking of the camera glass for no apparent reason...didn't drop the phone...nothing else in the pocket...etc.
There seems to be a quality control issue with the camera glass that LG and Tmobile refuse to accept, and are putting the responsibility on the customer to pay for. This is incredibly, enormously, and exceedingly unfair.
Between both companies blaming us, and less than smart forum posters on the internet who don't understand what quality control is (some are bad, some are good...you probably got a good one...so chill)...I am looking to jump to another flagship sometime soon. Preferably one with a wide angle camera.
Sounds like a user error.

Sorry, but I disagree. The sheer amount of complaints I've read that are very similar, coupled with the fact this has been an issue on previous LG's leads me to believe it's a little more than user error.
Thankfully I seem to have one of the good ones, but for me LG should at least be investigating the issue further rather than fully blaming the consumers.
How do you know you have a good model without this default ?

Every new phone launches with some random issues. I just don't think this is anything widespread. Time will tell but the number of complaints on this topic seem minimal. In comparison look at the Galaxy S8 and the pink tint, the iPhone randomly shutting off at 40% or the pixels camera flare.

Taking into consideration, the sheer quantity of handsets (USA Complaints) compared to other markets... How many people outside of the USA, have had genuine issues (No user carelessness) with their camera glass?
By general market sale proportion, obviously there will be more American complaints about build quality issues.. BUT.. as someone in Europe and having owned several LG handsets now.. I have never had any of the "common issues" commented on over the past few generations of LG handsets.. ?

Exactly. Good luck to OP switching phones. Hope he doesn't get a S8 with red tint or any other flagship phone that all have a list of problems you can read about online.
This is all surely stirring the pot to be sure but how do we benefit from doing so? We have no objective idea of how widespread these issues are, so hard to comment beyond our personal opinions of what exactly is happening with the case of a cracked lens. It's up to each to decide I guess. Even harder to convince LG to open up about it given their past rep with QC.
I think the camera lens having more area and being flush with the case is bad design as "pretty" as it is.
Device durability seems to have been sacrified for features/aesthetics as of late, but this is not just LG. What is the point of having a pretty phone if you need an awkward case to protect the edges of the screen?
There isn't much choice either when it comes to Android flagships. Not like there used to be...
It is possible that a flaw in the glass crystal structure causing these problem, but it seems unlikely as not that Hugh amount of people is having this problem.
I've dropped my G6 about 18 inches down onto a granite surface plate at work without any problems lol. I don't think it's widespread.
It is a widespread issue and needs to be stopped

Previously i posted about starting a petition or contacting media outlets as well as LG about the issue but got nothing but nonchalant comments in return. Something needs to be done about this issue now

A familiar theme that I've noticed with the complaints I've read is that they were taking photos a short while before they noticed the cracks. Could it be the flash or camera body overheating the glass? That heat combined with a little stress and pressure in a pocket could be the cause of most the problems.

Possible but very unlikely, the heat should never transfer to the camera glass in the first place. There is an empty between the glass and the camera and the flash.
I love it here, the most entertaining of the XDA forums I use.
Threads like this and the I-never-researched-before-buying-and-now-I'm-SO-pissed-there's-no-all-important-notification-LED are great to read through.
I love my V20
Just because there is a thread reporting camera glass problems with hundreds of replies doesn't equal a wide spread problem. The v20 had cases of this too I think it's likely a random issue with the quality.
Without g4 bootloop level exposure you aren't likely to get it fixed for free. It took literally over a year for LG to acknowledge the bootloop problem and that was only the g4 that was acknowledged.
The free repair on this issue was a hit and miss but reportedly LG covers this issue under the V10 and g4 past warranty.
You have to also look at it from LGs prospective, there are a select few that can't take responsibility for dropping their phone and will attempt to get fixed for free when it's their fault.
How is LG supposed to know that the camera lens magically cracked? Until there is enough reports sent in to put it on g4 bootloop level of exposure I am afraid you're unlikely to get a free replacement or repair.
I don't think the problem is false and I wouldn't blame you for being pissed but there is an unfortunate few that ruin it for the rest of us.
On that note TMobile is usually pretty good about exchanges, especially with the jump program. I was able to jump with a V10 still rooted without a problem. They're pretty lax compared to other carriers.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
No one is saying that quality issues shouldn't be brought to LG's attention. I think what most people who have responded are saying is that the "I got a phone that has a problem and I read on the internet that 10 other people had this problem some I'm done with said phone forever" comments are silly. All phones have a batch or 2 that have problems. Contact LG and get a replacement or move to another phone and hope you get one without problems. I will say LG's handling of the bootloop issue was poor but hopefully they've learned.
