Wifi calling / Eds0008 possible fix (stock unrooted) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

After a couple weeks of trying to figure out why I cannot initially enable Wi-Fi calling, I was able to get a workable solution. A little bit of backstory first. There are five lines on my account, all of which have Smart Limits enabled. Turns out, Smart Limits disabled vo LTE... This however is required for Wi-Fi calling.
Tldnr, disable ATT SMARTLIMITS if it is enabled, full power cycle (power down not just reset) and try to set it up again.
* this was on a stock s7 no root, no custom rom, full carrier bloated phone.

dealing with similar on a new S8, but I'm wondering if the phone you enabled was purchased from AT&T or at least AT&T branded out of the box because at this point I can't get wifi calling working no matter what because i bought an unlocked s8. thanks for any insight!

[Q] Virgin Prepaid Kyocera Event - WiFi phone

Radio Shack had this phone on sale for $14 cash this weekend, I picked up a couple of them to setup to use for WiFi text/music/YouTube phones for my kids.
I have rooted them and now just want to get rid of the Virgin Mobile automatic profile update that attempts to happen when I power on the phone. If possible, I would like to permanently disable the cellular data/voice modem as well leaving WiFi enabled.
Anyone know what app I should disable/remove through titanium backup to do this?
I have absolutely no intention of ever activating these phones for traditional cell service. They will strictly be used as WiFi android devices. Basically a cheapo alternative to an iPod.
I have set the phone for airplane mode and then enabled WiFi to prevent them from making calls, this is a reasonable solution but they could turn on the cell radio and start trying to activate, although they wouldn't get far as they don't have a way to provide payment anyway.
Problem is their mother isn't the brightest and when they are away at mom's, I would like to be able to text them and not be on the phone with her troubleshooting them constantly.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

1) Turn on Airplane mode with power button. 2) wait 10 seconds, 3) turn on WiFi
Should stop this. You still get a message on bootup, but it will NOT cycle off/on WiFi like it doesn't if you don't turn on airplane mode.

[Q] Data wont stay connected

My HAM2 is 2 weeks old. I bought it in the US and used it for a week on a US SIM and data worked flawless. Got back to Canada and switched to a Rogers SIM and I've been having problems getting the data connection to stick. It keeps disabling almost like if it cannot wake from a temporary sleep/diable.
I haven't been able to fully characterize the problem. THe failure is easy to reproduce the success is not.
When the data is working if I enable Wifi and then disable Wifi I will usually lose the data connection right away and it won't restore until I fiddle with the two default Rogers APN selections and reboot a few times. I've tried creating a new APN but that doesn't solve things
Last night I manually selected the Rogers 3G network instead of leaving the Network on Auto select and Data worked for a good 10 hours - the longest success. I enabled wifi a few minutes ago and disabled it and the Data connection was lost.
I'm at a loss as to how to characterize the problem or arrive at a solution. I did a factory reset on my phone a few times. I swapped for a different Rogers SIM and its the same problem.
Any ideas? I'm fresh out!
Do you have another phone to load the same SIM card, with same APN setting, and at same location. Basically to see if is due to apn/signal etc.
Look a bit more closely at the APN settings. I know on straighttalk there is a simple setting and then one where other parameters are fine tuned so it may also be like that on Rogers.
Is the "Data enabled" check box becoming unchecked? That keeps happening to my phone every once in a while.
Thanks for your suggestions guys. Its amazing how as soon as you post a problem online, the next thing you try succeeds!
I had some success with manually choosing the Network Operator to be 'Rogers 3G'. So I built on that by manually selecting WCDMA Only in the 'Network Mode'. So far I have success with data and wifi switchings smoothly.
I dont know if these manual options have reduced my ability to get faster speeds, etc. but it works so I'm happy.

What is the best way to control the software of my Z5C? Do I need root?

I like my compact Z5 (international E5823) but the stock software is constantly updating, and updating the bloatware. The updates have slowly disabled all my apps. Plus it performs badly, I can rarely get cellular data now.
I am experienced with rooting Motorola and Nokia, but it’s so complicated with this phone. I rely on those DRM keys for the camera and fingerprint scanner.
I have Flashtool on my PC.
I would like to root it, maybe to run Adaway, but that is not mandatory. I mostly want the phone to perform well with cellular data and be able to control some other things like to eliminate the sound when I plug it in. Maybe I don’t need root.
What is the best way for me to gain control over the software to stop updates, block or eliminate bloatware, and be able to control sounds etc?
Go into the bloat, and turn off all the options regarding updates and notifications.
Use the System Tuner UI to get power notifications options and turn the notifications for the bloat.
Go into your data options, and turn off background data for the bloat.
Go into the software update and turn off the checking for updates, switch it to off, or manual.
You will not hear or see anything from your bloat again (whatsnew).
You will need to switch cellular providers if you want better 3g/4g data service.
No idea about sound when plugging it in. I have turned my phone to do not disturb mode, so it makes no sound.
Thanks for the tips. Switching off background data for each, I had not done yet.
I am wondering if I misdiagnosed the problems. 1) the phone uses the battery quickly, months ago it lasted 2 days, now barely 1 day; more than battery wear should be. 2) data signal is intermittent and rare now, months ago it got excellent cellular data, I had never even switched on wifi until recently.
Any advice to solve these 2 problems?
A while, back I tried to rebuff an update. Then the phone kept calling the home base trying to get that software update; interfering with my call signal and consuming the battery. Current problems seem similar to that but not as intense.
Also, as a silly question, I am a noob with obeying the rules and using stock android, is it normal to have your standard apps, like note taking or internet speed apps, just go obsolete when the os updates itself? Do I have to track down and update apps for each new os “security update”?
I just want to let you know that even if bloatware is removed, unless you resize the partition, the free space you gain is in the partition you don't have user access to.
also, unless you strip down most of the pre-installed apps, the most you really gain is about 500mb
you would have liked the guide I had on the sony forums for first boot out of box, it basically stepped you through the process to limit data and apps, and it gave about 2 1/2 days standby, no root required.

Location-based Smart Lock not working - what am I doing wrong?

Is it just me or does location-based Smart Lock not work? Basically, even though I setup my home location (I even used other troubleshooting steps where they tell you to setup multiple pins, etc)... but the phone never stays unlocked at home. Is it just me?
VS996, 20j... stock rooted ROM.
What am I doing wrong?
@schwinn8
After reading your post I checked my Smart Lock settings and I see that I had to re-enable them. I don't know why this is, but it's not the first time. Not sure if I checked when I upgraded to vs996 20j. I think it's just one of those things that don't work as advertised. Like On-Body Detection.
Yeah, I was hoping that I could do the same with bluetooth detection (ie, if a certain BT is around, then it would remain unlocked) but it seems even that option requires that you're connected to that device, not that it's just nearby. Very disappointing that all this still doesn't work.

Automatically re-enable USB tethering on pie

A bit of background:
I've been trying to set up internet access at a small home out in the country with cell service being the only option. Being cheap, I decided to try going down the route of tethering an old phone (Pixel XL) to a router and getting data-only plan (2GB of high speed at T-mo for $10/mo). The idea was that this would be enough to support my ring security system, some blink cameras and occasional internet use.
The problem:
Initially everything seemed fine. I got an Asus AC1300 (RT-ACRH13) router with USB 3.0 port for tethering and set up the Pixel XL to tether to it. However, I soon discovered the USB tethering option would get disabled by the phone quite frequently. This was due to a number of reasons...power briefly going out (fixed this by adding a UPS); pixel getting an update pushed to it (also disabled); bad weather causing signal to drop (can't fix this one); there appear to be other reasons as well i've not yet identified;
Tried so far:
Installed tasker thinking I could set it up to periodically re-enable tethering. Discovered for that I needed root, so I rooted the pixel. Tasker still complained - got a response from them stating that as of Pie "unfortunately Google now protect this action under the MANAGE_USB permissions which only system apps can get". Tried the Secure Settings app/extension for tasker and that just fails when testing the action without any additional notes - no response from the developer on that.
So, any ideas on how to accomplish what I'm trying to do? All i'd like is for USB tethering to be automatically re-enabled every few minutes if it's off.

No personal experience with this but the scenario you are describing is a constant problem for people living in an RV (recreational vehicle). You may want to include RV product/solutions to see what they've come up with.
