I'm buying the LG G5, How serious the Ghosting issue and other faults - LG G5 Questions & Answers

hello,
I was gonna buy ZTE Axon 7. but the cam made me cancel the order.
So, i have seen some serious ghosting and burns of lg g5 even in the first months
Please reply:
I use g5 DXXX series 6XXK (production date)
I have the issues: X,Y and Z
or
I dont have the issues

I just want to be sure my g5 wont be defective... i cant know the serial as well but amazon usually sells the latest batches

ATT LG G5, no issues. 3 months now.

International H850, bought in May (produced in April I think), absolutely no issues at all

H850 3 months serious issue. Going tomorrow to LG service to replace the screen.

International H850 - 4 months usage.
Burn-in is not an issue (had it for a couple of days, then vanished without a trace).
No major issues.

H850 sending it in for GPS and the uneven standard module. Forgot to mention the ghosting issue. Bought it in may so also a rather early one.

By ghosting do you mean when scrolling?
Its an issue, its worse with black text on white background where the text will blend in due to the white ghosting into the black, this is display lag.
On white text with black background its there but not as noticeable and I only notice it if looking for it.

i bought it on bhphotovideo. because 450+tax usd for lg g5,extra battery,cradle, VR goggles and cam plus was a win.
i m just gonna sell the VR lol
i hope my device wont have the issues.
when writing your issue please include the production date as well(first 3 digits of the serial no)

Screen burn

So ive had the lg g5 for about 3 months now and i can already see my keyboars burned into the background of my screen, did anyone else had this issue..i kinda find it hard to belive because i had my g4 for 2 years and i had no screen burn at all

I think you missed a few
I had this issue on my LG G2, LG G3, then I said maybe LG learned from this , then I bought a G5 to find out it's defected also lol, but Im still loyal to LG and will get LG phones what ever happens .

I've been one of the lucky's i guess I've never had retention or burn on any devices i own other than an old s3 and my wife s5 which had face book burnt into it

What's worse is Facebook notification burns of a keyboard burn so that's why u must use a black themed keyboard o hope your wife is fine with it

lol she didnt even notice i got it im like wtf i can make out the icon strip at the top of face books page and the thunbs up button lol pretty bad but guy i know just had to have it cause the phones in prstine shape for 2 years old traded a samsung 9.7 inch tablet for it so i kinda got my moneys worth out of it.

I have horrifically bad screen burn that occurs after minutes, even seconds of bright objects being on the screen. It seems it only became this severe after 2-3 months of having my LG G5. It would be mostly tolerable during the day, but I primarily use my phone after I'm off work at midnight - dim light and lower phone settings make the screen burn even more aggressive in appearance.
Furthermore, I've had backlight bleeding on the top edge and bottom right corner, along with slight bright patches since day 1. This past week I also picked up a Cardboard VR headset only to find I have a dead pixel smack in the center of view on bright scenes, and more than a dozen bright pixels on black backgrounds (several are the super-bright green subpixels.)
Any one of these display issues I could've tolerated, but together it's grown outrageous. I also have faulty GPS and a loose chin connection on the bottom right. This is a Sprint G5 LS992 with a production date of January 25, 2017... so a late model certainly isn't a guarantee of better quality hardware - not for me at least.
Guys, just send it on warranty, they'll replace your entire screen (so it's a good way to loose scratches of your screen-they replace the whole panel, LCD and glass combined). Mine got replaced after 6 months of use and now after 5 with new screen I don't have any problems with it.

Unfortunately I don't believe that is even an option for me any more.
I got this G5 as an "upgrade" for a G Flex 2 that LGE Alabama at one point claimed would take 2.5 to 3 months to repair (not "7-10 business days" as the RMA email stated.) After several hours of calls and complaints online, I thought I had a satisfactory resolution 2 months after sending my phone in.
Then all of the issues in my last post started popping up.
Normally a phone is covered 1 year from date of manufacture (again, mine is January 25, 2017 making it only 5 months old) BUT both my service paperwork and the LGE representative on phone said I am only warranted 90 days after receiving the G5 in March; noting here that my G Flex 2 had no hardware defects - only hardbricked firmware on accident due to LG Anti-Rollback.
I feel now that I was purposely screwed over with a rushed, refurbished-yet-still-defective unit by LGE Alabama. I already fed them cash for the G Flex 2 being an Out-Of-Warranty repair job - I don't want to double down my losses paying them again in less than half a year.
So did LG say something about this issue ? They know thousands of people are having this problem .. didn't they say anything atleast

So I am THINKING about getting the V30 at Verizon come holiday time. If you go on YouTube, you see how many wonderful reviews this phone gets, and to be honest, the phone does look pretty bad ass. HOWEVER, 2 years ago, the V10 had awesome reviews on YouTube and seemed like a solid phone, so I bought it. Well after about a year, and having gone through 3 V10's (or the same one repaired 3 times) due to bootloop problems, I am a little skeptical about how the V30 is going to turn out. Also I am seeing that the new Pixel is having screen burn in issues, and it being made by LG, this makes me even more worried about the V30. I really want to get this phone, but I also want to ask all of you owners how it has been holding up for you so far. Any issues like the V10? Such as the very irritating Bluetooth issues, battery life, etc...
If you are worried about your device bootlooping, then wait for the non-carrier versions to come out and keep waiting to see if they actually end up being rootable. If they are, then it is easy enough to unlock the bootloader, request the developer unlock, and then reflash stock or a ROM to recover from any potential bootloop situation. If you decide to go with the Version carrier version, then LG's lack of quality control for their software could potentially still be an issue in the future. There has already been one update so far and no one has reported it bootlooping their device as of yet.

I have yet to here bootloop problem of lg g6, lg v20, or lg v30. I know most people are scare of LG but bootloop was a thing of a pass with the lg g4, lg g5, lg v10

From what I understand, it's not the software that is the problem. The cpu comes un-soldered from the motherboard making the phone pretty much useless. Was a widely known issue with a few lg phones.
I returned one because of screen issues.
We all know about the off-angle blue tint, but mine had it bad. I didn't really notice it until watching a Late Show clip in a dark room -- dark set, Colbert's white shirt, skin tone was all so obviously off, and it shifted blue just a degree or two off axis.
Compared it to the demo models in two Verizon retail stores and despite the bright lighting, the difference in whites was apparent.
Store did an exchange no problem even though I purchased online. New one seems fine.
Since receiving my replacement phone from a first batch phone issue, I have had ZERO issues

Hmmm. I don't see how that would cause a bootloop if that was the case. A hardware problem with the solder would more than likely cause the phone not to power up at all. Bootloops are usually more software related than hardware unless you are talking about core issues, like with the Nexus 6P. Thankfully I never experienced that on both the units I purchased.

Without going too into it, I am part of a class action lawsuit regarding these bootloops. According to all the evidence, the cpu comes un-soldered just enough where the lg logo will appear and the phone freezes. The only way to shut it off after that is to either pull the battery or let the phone die if the battery is not removable.

Interesting! You should be able to power off the phone by holding the power button until it shuts off, which is about 7 or so seconds. The V30 does come with a 2 year warranty once you register, as long as you are in the US. The rest of the world gets the shaft though and only gets a year.

Yeah. even the power button wouldn't work. I believe the phones affected were the nexus 5x, LG G4, G5, V10, and I think a couple others. The new 2 year warranty is probably because of this as 90 percent of these failures occurred after the 1 year warranty period. For all the devices affected they extended the warranty to 2 years for bootloop related issues.

Thankfully, that has nothing to do with the LG V30. We are talking about any issues with 2017 LG V30, not phones from past years. You're going to confuse people who think you are talking about problems with the LG V30. I understand you are upset about LG's failures in the past, but the question is about possible CURRENT problems with LG V30.

I know. I was explaining to jcsww about the issues of the previous phones and was kinda wondering if the V30 is going to end up the same way those phones did in terms of seeming like pretty bad ass phones for the first year and then developing serious problems after a year.

I understand. It's just skimming through the thread, there was all these details about CPU coming loose, blah, blah. Sounds scary! But it's not the LG V30.
Mine has zero issues. Very good phone - and that says a lot since I swore years ago Id never own LG again.
I have seen that Verizon loads so much bloatware on the phone ... I was amazed. I have Tmo ... a few things on there than cannot be removed or disabled, but nothing crazy.

I've been following closely those complaints about the display. From what I read on Reddit or on XDA, it seems that only the first batches of V30s had those display issues, but LG corrected their production in october. The Verge must have tested one of those first units (their review was published on october 16). It should be solved right now, complaints have dramatically decreased lately...

And I can show you a review (sample below) from October 12, where the both pre-production and early production displays (on two different phones) were tested thoroughly and nothing was wrong. The point I'm making is even in the pre-production and early production phase seems the the problems were not widespread. It was luck of the draw, not every phone. Dozens of professional reviewers praised the display, but a couple of reviewers got bad ones. Same with early purchasers. But Android Headlines got great displays in both pre-production and final retail (but still early production). So, the display issues had to be some minor percentage.
That's not to say LG hasn't improved the process so there's less lemons getting through the line, or perhaps with another month under their belt improved the quality even more, but you wouldn't have gotten such glowing reviews if every phone LG released in early October was a disaster.
Note the date, and note they tested two separate phones.

There is some color shifting when looking at the display from an angle, pushing the normally warm hue of the display to a much cooler, bluer one.
This color shifting is a bit odd for an OLED, as any color shifting is usually caused by the oleophobic coating on the glass rather than shifting of the panel itself, although without taking the glass off it would be difficult to determine the reasoning for the shifting. It doesn’t look all that odd though simply because so many displays already exhibit a cooler tone to them, and while you’ll certainly notice the difference when looking at the display straight on, it might not be so noticeable to folks looking at the phone with you. Outdoor visibility is not affected by this color change at all, and in fact you’ll find it’s incredibly easy to see the V30’s display outdoors, no matter how sunny it is.

Panel uniformity is perfect thanks to the fact that OLED’s pixel illumination methodology is done via individual pixels and not via a backlight that can easily exhibit light bleeding or uneven surface lighting.
Despite some reports we’ve seen during the preview period with the device, both our preview device, as well as the final retail unit, never showed signs of panel color uniformity issues, and looks fine at any brightness. When we test panel uniformity we use three different solid color backgrounds:
100% white,
100% black and
50% gray.
Each of these are then tested at the panel’s lowest and highest brightness, as well as a 50% brightness test. You’ll also find no issues with pixel refresh rates or pixel persistence rates of any kind, and this panel is an excellent performer for VR for many reasons, as we’ll cover below.

In the final analysis, again, we're here to set the record straight on the LG V30. Though garnering its fair share of passionate praise, some have taken specific issue with this phone's LG-built pOLED display. To that we would quite simply offer that we're unsure what a select few others are looking at. Perhaps they're observing image inconsistency in corner-case lighting conditions, or maybe even in certain apps, where Android's gradient overlays can cause a "perceived" banding effect. We're not sure what others may have seen, but what we're looking at is a pretty fantastic flagship Android phone here, with an equally fantastic display.
To wit, I have used Samsung Galaxy devices as my personal phones for the past few generations, from the Galaxy S5 on up to the Galaxy S8+. Side-by-side versus Samsung's AMOLED displays, the LG V30 might not offer quite the same viewing angles as the GS8+, but the V30 is very competitive. In fact, I prefer the V30's slightly cooler screen calibration.

No problems with my V30 so far. Manuf in October, only had it a few weeks. Slightly disappointed in the auto camera shooting (the Google camera app works for me, have not tried it much), but the most striking thing so far is the absolutely stellar battery life I am getting. I don't keep screen on time numbers and such, but I go to bed at night with well above 50%, and if I top up at all throughout the day, I'll go to bed with 65-70%. Thats using waze for about an hour, web surfing, reddit, Facebook, messaging, location turned on, etc. No messing around.

Yeah I read that big thread on reddit too. After reading it, it made me really second guess getting the V30, but after reading your post it makes me feel a bit better knowing LG acknowledged the issue and corrected it. So to be on the safe side should I try to make sure I have an october made unit (if I even have a say in it)?

V30 screen quality in H2 2018?

During the first few months after launch, there seemed to be problems with the V30's screen, possibly due to P-OLED manufacturing QC issues.
Have these manufacturing issues largely been rectified? Are XDA members who bought a V30 in the last six months happy with its screen?

I just got mine, manufactured 05/2018, and there's a slight yellowing in the lower left corner of the screen, Only noticeable on dark grey backgrounds for the most part.
I bought an Indian H930DS 5 months ago and luckily the screen is perfect
manufactured 5-2018, perfect, but only used for 2 weeks.

Newer batch device evaluation

It's been a month from the official release of the Huawei flagship. A month that is marked by these disturbing faults to the display unit, fingerprint or face unlock.
The above issues are have been clearly reported to the initial batches of September and October.
It should be really useful if we could register all defects noted in devices from November batch and on.
Please state the manufacturing date of the device if this is from November and on, how many days you have used your device and what defect - if any - you have spotted.
I kindly request you don't make any other comment.

you've mentioned batches grouped by month?
Presumably that is a reference to shipping batches which isn't necessarily the same thing as a build month/batch which is what you need to be accurate as a carrier could be sitting on "old" stock and only just shipping it
I got one direct from Huawei. Its a L29c model sn 18b08 boe screen, so far so good
Before that I had to LG screen in a L09 model so not sure why Huawei swapped it.
LG screen 18B09 Vodafone UK with hulk screen.
BOE 18B05, no problems for 1 week now.
First phone was early LG one, just got replacement from VF UK with serial 18B05 and BOE screen, so far so good.
I have an 18B09 from UK O2 - screen is BOE with no issues...
However the actual screen being scratched is ridiculous. I had nothing on my previous devices, however this BOE specific one is scratching all over the front screen. It's in a bad state after only a few days - not sure how either....

I noticed this on some of the store demo units. The excuse in the shop was always "well they get a lot of abuse", but these were devices that had only been on display for a few days.

I had my previous iPhone for around 3 years and there weren't scratches like this. Even my previous Mate 20 Pros with the LG screens were fine over the 4 or so weeks I had them.

The OLED panel shouldn't have any bearing on scratch resistance, since the glass panel is likely a separate component common to both panel variants. My GS5 is still scratch-free after 4 years. The pitiful lack of RAM running current apps, on the other hand.....

Before that I had to LG screen in a L09 model so not sure why Huawei swapped it.

Did you get the replacement for a different model?
First day was no problem with screen, saw it was LG... was a bit worried but my batch number didn't match to anyone who had the issue that I could find and BAM today... green screen of hell. ****ing hulk in matter of hours. Returning tomorrow and choosing different brand, from instagram + snapchat problems to camera having poor software but good hardware and now gluegate, there is no reasons phones with faulty screens are still being sold and people have to change 3-4 times to get a BOE one. Shame on Huawei.

Had an 18B02 LG, worst I've had yet. Green discolouration around all edges and glow leaking up the bottom half of the screen.

Who can shares his expérience with the mate 20 pro coming with gluegate issue and green edges (lg screen) does it get worse over time ? Do we can minimise risk and how much time as per your expérience the phone will stand? Got my new mate 20 pro as a gift without any chance of replacemnt with warranty
Never experienced green edge gluegate problem despite the fact that I have an LG display, bought my phone at launch and my phone is part of the batch people on XDA claimed repeatedly was 100% defective.
You see green edges in your display when exactly? In certain apps? All apps? Specific conditions?

In low light when the brightness is at 0 in a grey background the left side is yes greeny and im afraid that it will extend and be unusable as maby video shown in youtube.
Just once brightness increased problem disappear
I got mine just after launch and there is a slight green hue around the edges under the usual conditions (LG panel) but it was never bad enough for me to want to return it. It's not got any worse since I had it (nearly 6 months now.)
If you've only just got yours then I'd imagine you'll be okay as they were supposed to have sorted the issue in later batches.
Had mine since launch, only really shows the problem under very dark conditions. Try taking a picture with another phone, it really does highlight green screen issues. I'm going to return mine this week.
I've had mine for about two weeks and don't have the screen issue as I believe the screen manufacturer was changed from LG to another at some point.

I believe that huwaei are only using BOE screens now
