- the screen could've been AMOLED from the beginning instead of Pro version
- Notifications in numbers instead of icons !!
- Sync with gmail is weird, sometimes i get notified immediately, and some i have to open gmail (Note5 was 100% in sync).
- Sound Volume menu is missed up, no separate toggle for Notifications tone !!!

Touchscreen response time is slow, sensitivity is not that good. The battery life is worse than the Mate 8 was. It's a great phone, though.

1. LCD or AMLED which is better is quite subjective. to me it does not make such big difference;
2. new update fixed it;
3. do nor have this problem, gmail runs very smoothly.
4...no idea
overall i will give this phone a 9.5

This is a great phone, nothing fazes it. The CPU is great, havent come across any RAM mismanagement yet either. Nice sharp screen, good speakers and the UI is really good. Im really looking forward to the lastest update, supposed to round everything off nicely. Anybody on MHA-L29C636B110 had an OTA yet?

I love my Mate 9.
Despite criticisms I like the display much better than my higher res amoled nexus 6p. Its still crisp, better colors, and brighter. I love the build, and I love the camera. Its been a really long time since a phone impressed me.
I got the Chinese version though, which took awhile to finally set up to use google services and apps. :/

Should have QHD screen at 5.9.
7/10

Some head scratching responses here.
9 out of 10 for me.

almost 9.9 for me. Amoled screen sucks even if it is super amoled. Color accuracy is always not there especially on portraits. The response is fast. Much faster than my P9+ and iphone 7+. Only thing it could be better if 2/4k screen out there can cope with the heat and battery life else FHD is perfectly fine for a small screen.

Looses 3 points over QHD?! I cannot understand how anyone can see difference 1080p or QHD on screen of this size.
I give it a 9.5/10 since latest EMUI update for notifications and 6 x camera zoom.
I was expecting the Leica camera to give even better photos, tho they are still OK, but nothing to replace my optical zoom Canon camera it seems.

I made a general comment based upon other owners, reviews.
7/10 is a good score.

Got a Chinese MHA-AL00, 6/128. Coming from iPhone 7, Axon 7 and Galaxy S7, all of which are fine devices. This thing takes it to another level altogether. Before getting it, I was a bit concerned about the resolution, however it's absolutely fine. The screen is wonderful. The phone is gorgeous. Performance is stellar. Speaking of which, now I know what lag-free performance on Android really feels like.

Tips for getting better pictures with the G2

I know that the camera is decent. Heck look at this guy's album on Google+
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/+LukasFrimerTholander/albums/5945766779380687681?sort=1
No matter how hard I try, the pictures I take, almost always look washed out. In most of the reviews the camera was praised for colour accuracy and reproduction. I'm not talking about perfectly lit scenarios but more or less like the ones I've posted above. Do you guys leave yours at Auto , Intelligent Auto etc. Whatever tips and tricks you can share I'm sure will greatly benefit the community.
[I know there is a thread regarding the slow shutter and focus but that's not the point over here.]
Cheers !
Mine look as good if not better. I use AI most, normal and manual otherwise. Focus isn't slow for me, shutter speed regarding moving items in less than full blast light are and get blurry easy. Software fixes needed. My still shots are incredibly brilliant and accurate for a smartphone camera.

Thanks for your reply. The cat wasn't pleased though .
my two cents
I just took two pictures, one using normal and one using IA. the IA is FAR better for focus, speed of shot, etc. But there is some serious work that needs to be done on the software for this camera.

I personally feel on the stock camera app , the auto ISO is a little bit too sensitive, causing unnecessary noise. I usually set the ISO to 800 (the max it allows in manual control) and the shot turns out significantly better.
Using IA pictures are somewhat better ! . BTW can someone modify the camera to save the settings ? because it always starts on Normal mode !
I used Intelligent Auto for the pics of my Spigen Case, seems to have worked well.
These pics are actually lower quality than the ones on my computer because there was probably some compression done during uploading/
Does anyone know of a way to make the IA setting stick? Every time I leave the camera app I have to mess with settings to get it back. I've tried just hitting the home button and leaving the app open but it reverts. Annoying! !
I agree about always leaving it in hdr mode but I also can't find a way to set it to stick

I came from the HTC One and that camera was a joke, i used the lenovo super camera and always had better results, apparently it works on the G2 also, its a big improvement over the stock camera from what I've seen so far. Ill probably get a better look at it tomorrow during the day.
Heres the link for yall to check it out.

Edit: took some pictures around the house, major improvement folks.
I'm going to Paris in about a month and will take dslr camera as main photo device, but I will also take pictures with G2.
For various shots I find iA and night mode in low light fine, but what mode do you recommend for city sights? Is it sports in the day and night mode in low light or should I use iA and will be fine?

Nexus 6P vs. Note 5 brightness [not mines]

u/ariloche123 from r/Nexus6P was able to compare the screens from the 6P and Note 5, side by side. They aren't the best pics in the world but it's clear that the screen on the 6P is pretty close to the Note 5's

Both displays have adaptive off i think.

Brighter, sure, but sharper? The font on the 6p is smaller and different so its hard to compare.
That pic is so blurry and basically no info.. Nothing can be gleaned from that.
the screen on the note 5 looks larger.. maybe because of the smaller bezels and off screen buttons? (i can't see any quality/brightness differences from this pic haha)
the only thing i got from this thread is "mines"
They look the same to me. But, I do understand tech nerds need straws to grasp at for every phone release..so be it.

He does good reviews but I don't see him as someone who is going to go out of his way to compare the displays with adaptive off. The pictures in this thread tell a lot regarding brightness. I'll have the 6P tomorrow and I'll be able to test this on my own.
Well this was a worthless comparison. They both are equally as bright and sharp indoors. It's outside where the differences are apparent. The Note 5 gets significantly brighter outside than the Nexus 6P does. And thats what will matter to most people. Rememeber the Nexus 6? Couldn't see that screen outside at all. 6P is better, but not in Note territory.
Gotta love it how desperate nexus users are to convince themselves that the nexus has same awesome display as the note 5 lmao
Even if Nexus 6P has the exact same screen as the Note 5, it will never reach the same brightness as it does on the Note 5.
If you have used an S6 or a Note 5 in sunlight with auto brightness enabled, you will have noticed a definitive "step" in max brightness. The first step is the theoretical max brightness of the display and the following step is the overboost capability which sacrifices contrast to briefly boost the brightness beyond the regular brightness.
This capability is absent in the Nexus 6P, the maximum brightness that you set with the brightness slider is the maximum brightness you will get.

Don't pay him any mind. There's been about 3-4 people that have played around in the 6P forum for the past month with practically nothing positive to say about the phone and he's one of them. If you have nothing positive to say about the phone, you probably don't want it, and if you don't want it, why are you here other than to spew nonsense? He probably has the Note 5 if you check his past posts.

I got the 6p yesterday and it is a great phone. It is users like you that wish it had exact screen like note 5 because you know it has the best. Let me help you though, nexus 6p screen feels different from note 5. More close to note 4 screen which wasn't bad actually. But hey samsung phones suck right, I doubt you have ever used one of them, so I am not even sure why you feel the need to compare them to the 6p ?

You've got some real issues hey? The 6P is using "The latest generation AMOLED panel from Samsung". So are you implying the Note 5 does NOT use the latest generation AMOLED panel? Maybe the 6P has the same panel as the Note 6 will have then?
I realize its useless trying to reason with you as reasoning isnt your strong point... but its the same panel, they simply limited the max brightness for battery reasons likely.
Anywho in the future I'll be sure to remind anyone who dares compare the screen of a phone to one made by Samsung that they are idiots for doing so and shouldnt even bother
The outdoor viewing is what worries me the most, honestly. I had a Note 4 before this ip6+ and I remember a huge difference between that phone and this one as far as being able to read it outside.
Yup, me too.
I have an S6 now, and I can honestly say it's awesome in direct sunlight.
But then again I'd still rather have a Nexus anyday. For that one small thing, I will sacrifice and max out the brightness slider and cover the phone so I can see it if necessary.
Where is my Nexus anyway? It's in post limbo at the moment between my house and the local post office. Doh!!!
Sigh... Brighter is not better except in direct sunlight. The rest of the time it f's up all of the colors on the internet as the internet is designed to be viewed in sRGB color space. I swear a part of my spirit dies each time I hear people talking about how fabulous Samsung's oversaturated unrealistic screens look. Those colors are nothing but comic book land.
...I am crossing my fingers that the sRGB mode on this phone is half decent or it is getting returned ASAP.

Display goes "pale"??

Hey guys!
so this has happened to me a few times now with this V10... I'm not sure what to make of it, and haven't been able to nail down a fix or cause... But the screen starts to randomly display blacks as greys the whole screen seems to go pale or grey... Like this, with Tapatalk I have the dark theme, its black normally, but here its grey. The only thing that fixes is a lock then unlock, but that doesn't keep it fixed. It will go away within a few minutes, but strange. Any opinions?

Yeah had the issue on all three v10's Ive owned. The first two had to do a factory reset. This one did it once and that was it. Don't know what causes it, but it's a backlight thing. This is why it's not showing up in the screen shot.
I've seen the phone adjust contrast such that the screen appears lighter (blacks become grays, etc). This only happens when the phone is in direct sunlight. It's apparently a "feature" to help you see the screen better, with no way of disabling. It does go back to normal as soon as you get the sensor out of direct sunlight.

Very true this feature has been implemented since the g4 or even the g3 perhaps as well. Gets annoying when it gets to gray in direct sunlight but honestly it does help and more better visibility.

It doesn't happen in G3 and it was implemented first (AFAIK) with Lumia 920 which is another proof that that device was way ahead of its time.
It helps a lot under direct sunlight and I'm very pleased to see it being implemented with V10.

It is a feature. Much like the Notion Ink Adam with pixel qi screen, would act like a paper White type screen on readers when exposed to strong light or direct Sun light. Any other device or phone in same situations I've not been able to see or read the screen eve with Hand over it to shadow, except my G4 and now v10. Love the feature.

It's possible the proximity sensor detects ultraviolet (from the Sun) to determine it's outdoor.
Cover it with your finger to see.
Yes I have noticed this feature also and I must say it does work really good!

This was also a feature on the note 4. I find it very useful.
Also. Doesn't the lumia deal with it a different way? I had the T-Mobile lumia 810 with clearback(?) Technology and when outdoors the screen didn't seem to do the same where it gets very bright and light. It was as if you were looking at the screen indoors

They might have different screens, not sure. But Lumia 920 goes very grayish under sun; blacks becoming dark gray etc.

Investigating what display mounts the 6P

Thinking, I concluded that, to clear up the confusion about if the panel is from Note 5, S6, Note 4, the best thing we can do is to put the Nexus 6P under the microscope. And if we can take pics, it would be great.
Has someone a microscope?
There's pictures showing the matrix of Note 4, S5, S6, etc in Phonearena to compare.

The idea is to examine a full white point in the phone, so we can see the matrix.

Here's what I managed to get with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens at 1:1 with a 5D Mk II. I did it handheld while the phone rested in a phone holder so it might not be fully in focus.
It's a 100% crop of a small part of the picture so you probably need a higher macro ratio to get a closer look. The screen is set at 100% brightness and showing a full white image. It looks like it's the same pixel layout as the S6 edge+ looks like it was set at half brightness.
Google already confirmed it's latest gen samsung panel: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/30/confirmed-nexus-6p-has-latest-gen-samsung-amoled-panel/
Brightness is indeed (much) lower than S6/note 5, not sure why ...

I really appreciate a lot the work you have done. Honestly, thank you.
I investigated and the Note 4 shares the diamond shape of blue and red subpixels, and oval green subpixel with S6 and Note 5. I thought we would see more differences. But your comment about the Nexus 6P panel looks like the one of the S6 Edge+ with half brightness is good!
Hopefully something like a High Brightness Mode is hidden, like in the Nexus 6. If it's latest generation panel, we'll be able to make it brighter without burn-in.
Thank you ever so much, this has been extremely helpful.
Samsung previously never sold any of its latest gen AMOLED panels to any mobile phone manufacturer. Motorola phones from the past couple of years that used AMOLED panels were using those that were 1 or 2 generations behind the ones on Samsung flagships. That was its advantage and it looks like it might have changed its policy with the Nexus 6P.
I don't think it's that simple. Samsung could be selling to Huawei panels that are below the top grade but not bad enough to throw away - they may be using the highest quality ones for their Note 5 and S6 displays but providing those that didn't make the cut to Huawei for a good discount. That explains how some of us might be getting colour bands/shifts in the pink and green regions on our displays.
So I just went through the kernel defconfig to see what LCD panel it selects. It doesnt. I'm not sure yet how it works but I think it just uses a generic driver.
I wonder what's going on here. Did samsung manufacture a special panel for the Nexus 6p ? Or did they use an existing panel but just used some trick to lower max brightness ? In which case we might unlock higher brightness ...
Is there any way to turn the brightness up on the 6P yet? I like being able to increase the saturation with Ex Kernal, but no options for boosting brightness past stock yet. Is pushing brightness past stock even safe to do on the 6P? Or even possible?

AMOLED panels are made from a wafer. They simply use the panels from the centre of the wafer for their flagships and sell the ones from the border which will not be as good (uneven colors, lower brightness, ...).
Knowing that this is a hot topic on*/r/android, I brought up the fact that testing has shown that on the Nexus 6P, its display has a lower maximum brightness and higher display power consumption than seen on the Note 5—key indicators of the AMOLED panel generation—I received knowing acknowledgement. So it turns out that the display panel is the same, but that much like the practice of CPU/SoC binning, there is variation inherent in AMOLED panel fabrication. Here, Google was able to procure the lower binned, yet current-generation displays from Samsung for the Nexus 6P.

Not satisfied with the camera

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
