[GUIDE] STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO ROOT AND TWRP - MM 23.5.A.1.291 LOCKED bootloader - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For Z2 Marshmallow .291 and LOCKED bootloader.
Working for D6503. Seems to be issues for D6543 model. Not sure about D6502...
1. Firstly go to https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6aEcBP7FwsWUGpQdHdvaVRCQlk/view and download the .291 kernel.
2. Then download SuperSU from here.
3. Put both these files on your phone's SD card.
4. Next download the .575 kernel here.
5. Before this can be used, you need to change it from a .zip file to a .ftf file.
- Go to the file location in the file browser.
- Click on the 'View' section in the top ribbon (Win 10).
- Check 'file name extensions' in the 'show/hide' section.
- Rename the kernel file, deleting the .zip and replacing it with .ftf instead at the end.
6. Download the Recovery for MM from here.
Extract the zip file.
7. Download the correct drivers for your phone: simplest way seems to be by installing Sony PC Companion and connecting your device.
8. Download and install 'Flashtool' from here. (The 0.9.18.6 version seems to have better compatibility).
9. Install the drivers for the flash- if you are on windows 10 or 8 you will need to turn off driver signing first:
A) Press the Windows key + R together and in the ‘Run’ box type: shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
- This will take you to the advanced boot menu.
– Now make the following selections to boot into the Start Up Setting Screen: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Start Up Settings > Restart
– Then, when the machine restarts, select number 7 i.e. “Disable driver signature enforcement”. Your machine will start with Driver signing enforcement disabled until the next reboot.
B) Now you can install the Flashtool drivers.
– Windows will warn that the driver is not signed and will require you to confirm the installation.
– Once the installation is complete, reboot the machineTo install the drivers you need to go to the Flashtool install folder (e.g. C:\Flashtool) and go in to the 'drivers' folder and run the 'flashtool-drivers.exe'.
- From the menu select Flashmode drivers, Fastboot drivers, and then scroll down and select Xperia Z2 device drivers (not sure if this last one is necessary if you've done step 7 previously, but I did it and everything worked.)
- Click install, and click okay on the warning messages.
10. Enable developer options on your phone (repeatedly tap on build number in 'About phone' in settings.)
Then make sure that USB Debugging is enabled, and in 'Security' that 'Allow Unknown Sources' is enabled.
11. Back up vital data (though you shouldn't loose anything), then power your phone off with it not connected to the computer.
12. Startup Flashtool and let it update etc.
13. While holding the volume down button on your phone, connect it to your PC.
Flashtool should respond and spew out a few lines of text ending with something like 'Phone ready for flashmode operations'.
14. Click on the lightning bolt, select 'Flashmode', and then in the next window browse to the location of the .575 .ftf kernel file you made. Select it, then click 'flash' at the bottom right. There should be more lines of text hopefully showing that this is completed successfully.
15. Close Flashtool, disconnect your phone, then turn on your phone.
16. Flash the recovery: Reconnect your phone to the PC and select MSC mode.
Go to the unzipped recovery and run 'install.bat' as administrator (if that doesn't work try not as administrator).
If the window that opens up stays on 'starting daemon...' for a while check on your phone as you may need to authorize the 'unknown source' connection from the PC.
The installation should complete with a 'press any key to continue'. Your phone should then automatically reboot in to TWRP recovery.
17. Install SuperSU: Once in TWRP go to 'Install' and select the SuperSU zip (you may need to select 'storage' and choose your SD card first). Swipe to install!
18. Reinstall the .291 kernel: still in TWRP do basically the same as for SuperSU but this time with the MM .291 zip.
19. Cross your fingers and reboot!
20. All being well you are now rooted, you can check root by installing 'Root Checker' form the play store.
21. Open a beer and relax!
(22. Install Cyberian camera!)
Please give me some thanks if I have helped you!

Ha, yeah, sorry. It's not meant to be insulting, it's more tongue in cheek and based off the book series 'An Idiots Guide To...'
These are the instructions I needed to be able to do it myself, I just thought it would be easier for people to have it all consolidated in to one clear, easy to understand, set of instructions.
I'll change the title though, just incase it puts anyone off!

My device is D6543 and at the time of installing TWRP it appeared '... Error: device not supported'.

My device is the D6543 .291 Stock and I have the Bootloader Unlocked, I am not able to do the TWRP procedure, the device normally reboots without Recovery Mode, what should I do?

I'm afraid I don't know about how to do the D6543. I did this with my D6503. Best thing to do is to post in this thread for some help.
Please post back here if you figure it out so that I can add the info to this guide.
I'll change the instructions so that is clear that this is tested on D6503.

I have aproblem with flashtool i couldn't find the specific ftf file though i put it in the specified folder

You can save the .575 kernel file where you like, as long as you browse to that location when selecting which file to flash in Flashtool.
Make sure it has actually been changed to a ftf file (like in step 5) and isn't still a zip: right click on the file and select properties, then details.

I know. I mean I don't know why you can't find the file.
The version of Flashtool I link to in the guide is the old version 0.9.18.6, so if you followed the guide you should already be using it.
Are you sure you renamed it to ftf correctly? You don't need to extract it.

Thanks for this, tooplanx, Works perfectly. Step by step guides like this are invaluable even if, like me, you've rooted a similar device before a few months ago, there is always little steps which you forget about so to have a guide like this is greatly appreciated.

[Q] how to install xRecovery?

question as title....
i follow the instruction and just click the '' install xRecovery '' but the system keep show me Force Close .... any solution ?
First and foremost... Do you have root access to your phone?
If so you can try this out, it always works for me
1.- Download and install Gscript lite from Android Market.
2.- Download and unpack the following package to the root of your SD Card.
Link: http://db.tt/MlrbaYL
If it asks for replacement select yes.
3.- Now go to Gscript Lite press "Menu" and select Add Script.
4.- Mark the checkbox that says "Need SU?"
5.- Click on Load File and you'll see to files (Xrecovery.sh & Xrecovery-reinstall.sh)
6.- Load both files.
7.- Click on "Xrecovery" and you'll see the system writting some commands, probably at the end i'll give you an error - Don't panic.
8.- Click on "Xrecovery-reinstall" and again you'll see some commands going on... At the end i'll say you have to reboot.
9.- Reboot your phone
10.- Enjoy.
Hope this helps.

Dax, you are too kind.
I think anyone wanting to root/recovery/flash should do their time reading, and then read some more.... THEN and only THEN should be allowed to ask intelligent questions based on the research they have done.
In the end I think you are only allowing newbs to be lazy with your UCG.
We have stickies for this very reason, but no one reads them it seems.
And no one seems to watch this either, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JmvCpR45LKA

There is another thread like this by victortangocharlie where hes exlplained multiple methods for installing recoveries.
But stickysours thread is huge. and too many questions, so a compact thread is always better implemented.

[Q] How to root Moto E (updated to 4.4.4) ?

I have a Motorola Moto E(XT1022). I bought it recently and just when I first started it, I got the 4.4.4 kitkat update and so I downloaded it right away. Then I realised one of the biggest problems of Moto E i.e. 2.2 gb storage. So i dug into find how to install apps on sd card and got to know that you have to root the phone. On xda, I found various ways to root but they were only for the 4.4.2 version of the phone and others were update to 4.4.4 on aldready rooted devices. Please tell me the way to root my device. Also as I am new to this, I dont understand any words like bootloader, fast recovery, etc. Please help me. Thank you in advance.
Edit: Can I use the way given by deej_roamer in his post here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2755336
Edit: I am sorry to have posted this in the general section. I don't know how to move it now to the questions section. Sorry again.
Thank You DAVI FELICANO and deej_roamer for their help. I have now successfully rooted my phone. If someone else has a problem, go to Page 2 for the solution.
You can use the defalt method, dont need to change anything.
Who told you that you need root to move apps to sd card?
Once you insert sd card you will get an option in settings/apps to move apps to sd card for those that can be moved.
This is though limited to Apks only and data is still kept in internal sd card.
If this option is not enough for you then you can go the advanced wag by rooting and using gl2sd or link2sd like apps.

You mean I can just follow the way to root if my device would have been running 4.4.2 kitkat (and as suggested by deej_roamer in his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755336 )
Thank you.

I know friend. I was talking about games like asphalt 8 and dead trigger which have data of size 1.5 gb because of which I wanted to root my phone. Thank you for the advice.

Who told you that you need root to move apps to sd card?
Once you insert sd card you will get an option in settings/apps to move apps to sd card for those that can be moved.

You can install only one game due to it's low internal memory. By one game I mean high graphics game. The obb file remains in the internal storage even after moving to SD card. I tried many things like making SD card default storage using SDK tools but to no Vail. Guess the only way now is to root it & use apps like gl2sd

You mean I can just follow the way to root if my device would have been running 4.4.2 kitkat (and as suggested by deej_roamer in his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755336 )
Thank you.

1. First download "Fastboot" from the thread. (Click on the "mfastboot-v2" link in the thread)
2. Next install it in a folder and remember that folder. Also, make sure you select the option of "Create shortcut on Desktop" during installation.
3. Next download CWM recovery from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e/general/root-moto-e-rooting-flashing-recovery-t2802971 (Click on the "CWM 6.0.4.9 recovery For MOTO E" link in the thread)
4. Copy the "cwm6.0.4.9_recover.img" file to the installation folder of fastboot.
5. Next download SuperSU v2.02 from here - http://download.chainfire.eu/452/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip (Click on "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip" link)
6. Don't Extract Supersu zip file.
7. Connect phone to pc. Copy the zip file to your internal memory(the directory of int. memory is /sdcard) (The directory for ext. sd card is /storage/sdcard1).
8. Remove your phone from your pc.
9. Switch off your device.
10. Turn on your device by holding power off button and volume down button together for 6-7 seconds. Quickly connect your phone to your pc.
11. The bootloader must be showing usb connected.
12. Run fastboot from your desktop.
13. Now type this (without quotes) - "fastboot flash recovery cwm6.0.4.9_recovery.img"
14. Look at the screen of device. It must be showing "Mismatched partition size (recovery)". It is normal don't worry.
15. Press volume down once (recovery will be selected) and then volume up so that it goes into recovery.
16. It will show the bootloader unlocked warning. Don't worry about it.
17. Your phone should now be in CWM recovery.
18. Don't do anything except what I tell you.
19. In this menu movement is done by the volume rockers ans selection by power button.
20. Press volume down so that "install zip" is selected.
21. Press power button.
22. Select "choose zip from /sdcard". Press power button.
23. Find the SuperSU.zip file(It will probably be in the "0/" folder)
24. It will ask to confirm install. Select Yes.
25. SuperSU will be installed.
26. Select CWM reboot. When you select CWM reboot, it will display "root access possibly lost - Fix?". PLEASE Select "No".

28. Open your menu(in the phone) and find SuperSu app (a # symbol will be there in its icon).
29. Disconnect your device from the pc.
CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE A ROOTED MOTO E.
If you ever wish to flash any other recovery (like twrp),
1. Copy the file to the fastboot installation folder in your pc.
2. Then reboot your device into bootloader and quickly connect it to your pc.
3. Run fastboot from your desktop and then type the following without quotes: "fastboot flash recovery cwm6.0.4.9_recovery.img"
4. Instead of writing "cwm6.0.4.9_recovery.img" write the complete file name including extension. For eg. if file name is "twrp_recovery_2" and has extension ".img" then write "fastboot flash recovery twrp_recovery_2.img"
I hope that this solved your problem brother.

Downgrade from Cyanogenmod

Hi,
I made a mistake installing Cyanogenmod on my phone, forgot to make a backup in TWRP.
This Cyanogenmod version requires me to delete my former EMUI fingerprints for the fingerprint function to work. I forgot to do that also...
So now I'm trying to reinstall my custom ROM. I found the UK PLK-L01 firmware on Huawei support page, downloaded that and put it on my (not external sd)sdcard/dload/UPDATE.APP.
Then I try the Volume UP+Volume Down+Power for it to install the rom, but only thing that happens is that the phone boots into TWRP, and in there, there is no option to install a .APP file.
Please help

couldnt you just locate files and delete in root explorer or similar app?
You can open the update.app in Huawei update extractor and use adb to manually flash the system, custom, cache, boot and recovery partitions back to stock then once you boot into the stock emui os you can reflash twrp. I'm busy atm but I'll write you a proper guide soon. Or you could Google it but be careful becuase there are a lot of guide that don't work anymore
Edit: This won't require you to wipe your user data so you can keep your setting contacts apps etc.
---------- Post added at 09:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:28 PM ----------
Here is my guide it's a bit long but should be easy. I recommend reading it all first before following it just so you know what each step is doing.
Ok step one. Go to This link and download the emui version for you phone.
step two. You need to download Huawei update extractor from This link and install it on your pc.
Step three. unzip the update you extracted to a new folder on your desktop (It can be called anything bu I recommend calling it "EMUI") and put the update.app file in this folder.
Step four. open Huawei update extractor and select profile "Unknown (worstenbrood)" if it is not selected already.
Step five. Under the section where it says update file click on the ".." button navigate to the folder you made on your desktop and double click the update.app file.
Step six. Right click on the file named "BOOT.img" and click extract selected then once the green loading bar has gotten to 100% click close on the extracting window since it does not automatically do it its self.
Step seven. Repeat step six for the files named "CACHE.img", "CUST.img", "RECOVERY.img", "SYSTEM.img" and "USERDATA.img" (Only extract USERDATA.img if you want to wipe all of you apps, setting, contacts and messages)
Step eight. Open the folder you create on your desktop and copy all of the files you extracted (Only the .img files since Huawei update extractor also create some other files which you don't need) and paste them into the folder which you have adb installed into (It should be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools" if you used the sdk version but if you have a diffrent version of adb paste them into the folder which you have that installed to)
Step nine. Boot your phone into bootloader mode on you phone. There are a few ways to do this but use whatever way you used when you flashed twrp.
step ten. In widowns explorer (Your pc's file manager) Shift click in the folder you have adb installed into and click "Open cmd window here"
Step eleven. type the following commands into cmd "fastboot flash boot BOOT.img", "fastboot flash cust CUST.img", "fastboot flash recovery RECOVERY.img", "fastboot flash system SYSTEM.img" and if you decided to reset all of you data (Like apps, contacts, messages, setting, etc) "fastboot flash userdata USERDATA.img" Some of these may take a long time (Especially SYSTEM.img but it shouldn't take more than 10 minute if it doesn't finish within 20 minute press ctrl + c in the cmd windows and start again).
Step twelve. Type "fastboot reboot" into cmd and you will boot into stock emui. Now you can reflash TWRP if you want and re install root.
Feel free to message me if you need help.

How To Guide Flashing firmware with Newflasher on Xperia 1 III without losing data

EDIT: The latest update to Newflasher (v52) built in the functionality to keep user data intact as a prompt while flashing.
Version 52 is out!
- version 52 (01.10.2021)
Implemented userprompt for keeping userdata, thanks @OhayouBaka for figuring out! Removed bootloader log retrieval
In short explanation all files marked with NOERASE inside update.xml is in relation to factory reset, so skiping files marked with NOERASE preserves userdata while flashing. Thanks OhayouBaka for figuring that out! Now newflasher have yes no promp for keeping userdata or making clean installation with factory reset. Bootloader log is removed since I found nothing usefull there.

As some people here who have owned previous Xperia devices may already know, to keep data while flashing firmware in Newflasher, you have to delete the userdata.sin file in the firmware folder.
However on the Xperia 1 III, this has changed.
If you only delete userdata.sin, your data partition will be corrupt and you will be forced to factory reset and lose all your data.
To prevent this from happening, not only do you have to delete userdata.sin, but also appslog.sin, diag.sin and metadata.sin from the firmware folder as well.
Found this by checking the update.xml file in the firmware folder, all required sin files to delete are listed as "<NOERASE>".
Unfortunately I had to learn this the hard way, but hopefully this post will save Xperia 1 III owners in the future from accidentally being forced to factory reset their devices when using Newflasher.
If you need the full instructions on flashing firmware that this guide compliments, check this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/flashing-a-xperia-1-iii-without-unlocking.4326235/

By the way, just wanted to clearify something, you mentioned about update.xml file in the firmware folder, should i edit it somehow before flashing, or just delete those four files from f/w folder ?

Thank you, dear friend!
Much appreciated to your help. Just flash mine back to latest factory firmware to receive OTA and everything looks fine for now. System settings and installed app data are saved with no problem.
so I had to jump through a few threads to figure out the details on how to update a magisk rooted x1m3 to the latest firmware without wiping(dirty flash). Figured I'd write out the steps here for others benefits
1 - download the firmware with Xperifirm
2 - download newflasher and extract to the firmware folder
3 - delete the following files from the firmware folder for no wipe dirty flash - userdata.sin, appslog.sin, diag.sin and metadata.sin. Skip this step if you're using Newflasher v52 and above
4 - download UnSin and extract to the firmware folder
5 - in the firmware folder, drag and drop boot_X-FLASH-ALL-*.sin into unsin.exe, and it will generate a boot_X-FLASH-ALL*.img in the same folder
6 - copy the boot_X-FLASH-ALL*.img onto your phone's sdcard somewhere.
7 - using magisk manager, install magisk and use the "select and patch a file" method. Select the boot_X-FLASH-All*.img file. This will generate a magisk_patched*.img onto your phone's sdcard
8 - download and extract platform-tools. Copy the magisk_patched*.img file from your phone's sdcard into the platform-tools folder on the computer. Rename the file to simply "magisk_patched.img"
9 - back up the phone(since still no real TWRP and titanium backup has been broken for a long time, I've been using Swift Backup)
10 - shut down the phone, plug in a usb-c cable to the computer, then while holding the volume DOWN button, plug in the usb-c cable to the phone. The LED indicator should be GREEN indicating FLASHMODE
11 - open up cmd prompt, and navigate to the firmware folder from step 1. Type in the following command
Code:
newflasher set_active:a
then hit enter. You should see result like this
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
12 - in windows explorer, navigate to the firmware folder, and double click on newflasher.exe(phone should still be in FLASHMODE). Respond to the prompts - n gordongate, p power off, n trim
13 - wait for the flashing of the new firmware to finish
14 - disconnect the phone from the usb cable, and power it back up. Check and make sure you have all your data/apps/etc. At this point it should boot into the rom just fine, but won't have root access and magisk will show that its not installed
15 - power off the phone again. This time, press the volume UP button while plugging in the USB-C cable. LED indicator should be BLUE for FASTBOOT
16 - open up a new cmd prompt, navigate to the platform-tools folder. Type
Code:
fastboot devices
and hit enter to confirm your phone is connected. Should respond with an alphanumeric number and the term fastboot
17 - type the following commands into cmd prompt
Code:
fastboot flash boot_a magisk_patched.img
fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched.img
fastboot reboot
18 - DONE. Your phone should be on the new firmware with root and all your data/apps/etc
props to @Miustone, @OhayouBaka, @Forbesii for the original instructions. I just sort of put it all in one place
fingers crossed a great dev will come along and give us TWRP soon!
Does r / o and r / w work in Root Explorer?
Edited the original post to include the info that Newflasher has been updated with this functionality built in.
Hi, is there any way I can unlock the /system partition?
Does this allow us to mount the system partition as R/W?

Hello, of course my Xperia 1 iii is root.
Sorry, I'm using Google Translate
Sure wish there was a delete post button. It's a forum and I can't delete my own posts. Way to go, internet.

tony, I appreciate the guide but having never rooted or flashed a sony device, can I follow your guide to a T or do I sort of have to follow the main guide by Miustone as well as yours?
For example, he mentions installing "Fastboot" and "Flashmode" drivers by rebooting Windows 10 and installing them with Driver Signature Enforcement disabled. You didn't mention this, so I'm just trying to determine if I need to sort of follow both guides.

so I had to jump through a few threads to figure out the details on how to update a magisk rooted x1m3 to the latest firmware without wiping(dirty flash).
9 - back up the phone
10 - shut down the phone, plug in a usb-c cable to the computer, then while holding the volume DOWN button, plug in the usb-c cable to the phone. The LED indicator should be GREEN indicating FLASHMODE
11 - open up cmd prompt, and navigate to the firmware folder from step 1. Type in the following command
Code:
newflasher set_active:a
then hit enter. You should see result like this
View attachment 5423107

Yeah you will want to follow @Miustone 's guide first. I wrote mine assuming the phone has already been bootloader unlocked and rooted and the PC is setup already

Well thanks anyway, dude. I just followed most of his tutorial through step 4 all the way to fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched.img
and then I just followed you with fastboot reboot without doing fastboot -w to wipe it. Well, it was wiped anyway. I guess I don't know what I expected. Lost everything and it's still not ****ing rooted - at least according to Youtube Vanced.
Ugh. This blows. We need better instructions. What was the point of flashing exactly when all it did was ERASE everything and not even grant you root?
Now I don't know what to do. I didn't even get to your "newflasher" here because I was following main guide and I stopped at the end of step 4 like like others said. I only wanted root. I didn't want to flash a new ROM.
Edit: Re-installed Magisk and now I can grant superuser. I still think these instructions need to be clearer for those of us who haven't rooted anything in thousands of years.
Unfortunately when you unlock your bootloader it will wipe the phone no matter what.
Will the tutorial in the first post also work on the Xperia Ace 3?

What about deleting all the .ta files? I think this is a precautionary step so that the bootloader is not messed with in the case that you install an older firmware. My understanding is that if the bootloader is downgraded with those .ta files from older firmware, this will cause a brick.
