RN4 keeps overheating when using apps such as Clash Royale and any VR app - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

I heard the Helio x20 processor is designed to not overheat, by shutting off the more powerful cores. However, my RN4 keeps overheating whenever I charge sometimes, play any game or use any VR apps. Is there any way to fix this? Currently running on xiaomi.eu's rom, followed the other thread's instructions on improving battery life and multitasking and used Lspeed + Kernel auditor for tweaks.
Is this a MIUI problem or the CPU? Will changing the governor help? Thanks in advance.

I play a lot of Clash Royale and have zero heating problems with my RN4. also using VR and get normal heat up, but nothing out of ordinary... Using latest MIUI European release.

There is a big difference between "the phone gets hot" or "the phone is overheating". Overheating usually leads to automatic shutdown or restarts. So i guess, your phone just get hot like mine does, when i play some games or use the phone while it's connected to the charger. By the way, this is a 10 core processor, and it's quite fast, so it's completely normal if the phone gets a little bit hot. Especially if you play games, and you are in performance mode or connected to the charger.

[Q] carcassonne cpu usage

I've recently purchased carcassonne from the market and while I love the game, it does seem to eat up the battery pretty quickly. So i'm wondering if its just me or are other folks experiencing this too?
Bit of background, i'm running Cognition 1.51 on an sgs2 and while playing the game it looks like it consumes around 58% (average) cpu. This to me seems excessively high. Carcassonne for those that are not aware of it is a tile based board game, which doesn't seem to me to be a candidate for a fast cpu. Yep, i could understand that the AI might require CPU but surely not for the rest of teh game.
So question is, does anybody else have the game and do you notice high cpu usage on it?
I didn't play that game but 58% consumption after how long playing? Do keep in mind that a playing a game is CPU intensive task, so CPU will be hot and battery will drain much faster than other stuffs.
Regards.
Ordinarily yes I'd agree about games and CPU usage. But for this type of game I'd expect it to have very minimal requirements.
Also I started up a fresh game and left it waiting for me to play my turn. Leaving it waiting for twenty mins and when i checked utilization it was still 30%. Given that there was no animations or screen activity that does seem excessively high.
Am trying out miui rom now to see if that makes any difference.

[Q] overheating

Please help..I am really getting hopless and disappointed at this phone..I am using lite'ning rom and before that the original rom i am still experiencing extreme overheating when playing games like Asphalt, What am I supposed to do what's wrong?
i'd really appreciate if someone could help.
Are you charging at the same time?
What is the surrounding air temp?
Are you overclocking?
Have you tried a different kernel?
Have you tried another battery?
I would expect it to get quite hot playing games like that for an extensive time,.....
How long?
What is your actual battery temp?

Where did you get ashphalt from? the reason i ask is because i think i saw it in the samsung apps store as S1 only.
And how hot is it actually getting?
Are you charging while playing?
Thank you all for your concern. I am not charging. Original battery with temp around 39'c. No change to the rom (lite'ning). Will changing the kernel resolve the problem? Games are all from Gameloft fir GS2. The phone gets really hot that I can not hold it!!!!
Isn't Asphalt just one of those games that doesnt fully support the dual-core cpu? I think it is the same problem with Gangstar:Miami Vacation. The game runs both cores at 100% which makes your SGS2 VERY hot.
I'd advice not to play any of those games, that are not updated for dual-core CPUs
I had the same problem mate with lite'ning/stock rom 2.3.3. Changed rom to Batista70 and heat issues deduced significantly, also changed kernel. Try changing both custom rom & kernel to find best combo for your phone use.

I had this issue while playing "Medieval Castle Defense", but not on "Asphalt".
Too much undervolting especially on the higher frequencies can cause overheating while running resource hungry app and games. [Says Tegrak himself! ]
If 39 degree is what you call too hot, my battery sometimes reaches that temp while surfing using hspa.
I experienced the same temps a while ago playing Asphalt 6 but i changed the settings SETCPU and from then on I have only top temps at about 40 maximum.

s2 getting heated a bit while playing games is a known issue ma8.
u can try a different kernel and see the same heating issue gets reduced, though not complete but to considerable extent.
If ur kernel suport governour seting , try to use set cpu and use ondemand gavernor to playing game

changing rom to 7comp lemme see if i am facing the same issue
i am aware of heating of phone while gaming but then on stock roms the heat goes down when sames are switched off
but here the heating is on till the time the battery does not go to 0%
have set cpu ondemand lemme see if it works
thanks..... will comeback
I've played GTA3 on these settings:
CPU: 1600-1600 MHz, performance, I/O vr, dual-core mode
GPU: 100-200-400 MHz, 900-1000-1100 mV
+ charging battery
= max batt temp.: 52°C & no reboots
Just try to combine settings
Dont forget to use sio on i/0
No need to say thanks just press it
Known issue, Use different kernels and optimize the setting for yourself.

Is my Z5c throttling?

Hello guys,
I bought this phone about two days after release and was pretty happy with it. It felt like the Snapdragon 810 didn't overheat at all and the performance was far better than on my "old" Z3.
Reason enough for me to try PPSSPP and emulate some good old games. For example MHP3rd ran at 100% speed in every area in-game with no frameskip activated.
But after some time (I'd say 20-30 mins) the cpu throttled a lot. The game speed was only at 50% even though the device didn't feel THAT hot (I've seen/felt hotter ones).
I tried the same thing again with the app "CPU Temp", and it seems like the CPU temperature never exceeded about 58°C. I'm not sure about smartphone CPUs but as far as I know, most chips can take up to 80-90°C until they start throttling. My Z5c runs at 52-58°C perfectly fine, but suddenly starts throttling for some reason.
Is it the CPU governor that tries to save battery life? I'd probably need to root the phone to "fix" this, but there are no roots available yet.
Or is it something else? Is the max. cpu temperature set too low? Could it be the S810 has no real temperature sensor and CPU Temp shows me something completely different?
Thanks in advance!
Greets,
Uftherr
I think that Sony it's throttling the CPU more to be below 58°C than to save battery life.
Try with the latest firmware (released today at PC Companion) it seems to be a little more snappier (maybe its a placebo).
I don't know why because the kernel is from the same date.
I consider that they should let the phone gain 65°C to increase the performance (at heat cost).

Nexus 9 gaming performance

This tablet is the same as the shield tablet how come it play games so badly if this can begin what’s the best custom rom and Kerman to play games on?
It overheats and throttles. The Tegra K1 in this tablet is not the same as the one in the Shield tablet. Same GPU, much different CPU. This one gets hotter. It really is too hot for a fanless tablet if you try to run it at full utilization for a long period of time, as a game will.
You can try underclocking the CPU. That will probably make it perform better for games because the GPU will run faster.
Actually it's not really "overheating" exactly. It has a temperature limit and once it hits that temp, it slows down the CPU and GPU to stay under that temp. It's a power limit. It uses too much power to run at full speed continuously for a long period of time in a tablet.
I'm using Slimrom with Fire Ice Kernel.
PUBG runs pretty well using gfxtools with low setting + 30fps.
But the game began to lag after 15min due to thermal throttle.
Will try the heatsink mod later and hopefully able to improve the performance...
