[Guide] How switch to US Nougat ROMs, How to downgrade with Chinese Axon 7 - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Note: You can try this with EU ROMs but I'm not sure if it will work, and won't be testing to see if it works, since I see no reason to flash EU ROMs anyways.
I knew this from day 1, but was switching between various LOS ROMs so didn't have much inspiration to make a guide. Now i'm switching back to Stock-based ROMs (due to other roms having no dolby, no voice capture,...), I'll be making a guide
I'm not responsible for bricked device.
This is a guide for those who are facing issues when trying to flash US, EU stock and stock-based ROMs on the chinese axon 7 (no signal, no wifi, worse battery, or simply not booting after splash screen). Since downgrading is also a part of this guide, I will also be covering how to downgrade Nougat 7.1.1 ROMs back to 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Important thing to note:
You must be on B13, 6.0.1 marshmallow with stock recovery, and please, DO NOT UPDATE TO B10 China NOUGAT or anything above ! This will cause a lot of problem, as from what I've deduced, US B19 is based on the China B09 update, anything above B10 won't be backwards compatible. and will cause problems like not booting, (or no wifi, signal etc after you recover the boot partition through recovery)
Now, if you're already on Nougat and want to try this guide, downgrade back to Marshmallow using EDL. Try this guide:
- Download B13 EDL (credits to djkuz from 4pda), extract it
- Download and install the latest Xiaomi MiFlash (stable or beta)
- Turn off your phone, plug it in to your PC, Hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down, go to device manager, look for the "Port" section, and you will see something like Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008., if you see it, proceed down below. If not try again.
- right click , open properties on the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, go to port settings, if you see the speed is at 9600 bits per second (bps), change it to 128000 (you can skip this step, but doing it will increase your flashing speed)
- Open MiFlash, press select and pick the folder you extracted a few steps ago.
- Press refresh, if you see your device appearing on the list, press flash. (if some random errors appear, unplug the device, plug it back and immediately press refresh and press flash)
- After flashing you'll be back on B13 China Marshmallow.
REMEMBER, DON'T OTA UPDATE IF YOU WANT A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO US ROMS:
Now, to the good part:
- Download the B09 China OTA package from here (credits to Demons-77)
- put the package into your EXTERNAL sd card, internal won't do.
- reboot to recovery (Power + Vol Up)
- select the option with the word "sd" on it
- now go and pick the package that you just put in
- It will begin flashing and after that, you will have B09 China Nougat
- reboot to bootloader and install recovery (fastboot flash recovery *your file name*)
- after that you can install any roms you like, no need to backup and restore the boot partition every time you flash a US ROM, and you won't encounter strange issues like no boot, no wifi, etc.
TL;DR for those who already know how to do most of these: go back to China Marshmallow through EDL, update to B09 China Nougat with stock recovery, install TWRP and then flash whatever US stock or stock-based roms you want (just like how you would with a US phone)

Does custom kernels work after installing US roms?
I want to have a magisk compatible rom but I don't want to install custom roms other than stock.
Chinese roms doesn't boot with these existing kernels in this forum.

what do you mean by magisk compatible rom? I'm running the latest badboyz with magisk root here, no problems at all

Ok that's great. Last time I tried badboyz, I get issues with my signal keep restarting. I'm currently using chinese B01 mifavor5. all is well, just that I can't use magisk due to the stock kernel.
Thanks for your feedback OP.

Hi, great tutorial, but I got few questions. Now I'm on chinese nougat (B15) and if I downgrade to mm, will still I be able to do this operation? Can I relock bootloader on US rom? Because some apps like android pay, pokemon go and snapchat won't work.

@spiwar Mate I could kiss you right now. But could you just point me to one of the us stock ROMs to flash? (E.g, is this one alright - A2017UV1.1.0B19_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip)
Is it safe to perform ota updates of the USA firmware on Chinese axons? Cheers

Downgrading IS a part of this operation if you're already on Nougat (you need to go back to MM before you can go B09 Nougat). Why relock your BL though? Magisk root can work with Android Pay, Pokemon Go AFAIK, not sure though (since I don't use any of those apps)

Yes that stock ROM will be okay. Personally I'm using the latest version of BadBoyz ROM.
No you can't. Because OTA updates requires the stock recovery, and your phone probably won't boot if you flash the US Stock recovery

Magisk won't work if you're using B10 Chinese as a base (as mentioned above), if you flash on B10 you'll have to flash the boot portion from the stock Chinese ROM for the US ROMs to even boot, and then you just lose magisk.

I see. Thanks for the tips. But I don't think I'll be coming back to b13 mm for that. I hate restoring data ang all the files in my internal storage.

Hi!
Could you please clarify me a doubt?
To follow this guide, must my device already be rooted?
Thanks!

Well, first part went well. After a lot of effort, because device was recognised as DFU. Anyway, I got it back to B13 with stock recovery.
On second part, when I try installing the FOTA update, it fails, giving me error: status 8. In update history, it says that the system package did not match the phone. Obviously I have A2017.
Any suggestions?

Into the blog it´s a tutorial.
This for install a TWRP: http://revolutionlemax2.blogspot.com.es/search?updated-max=2016-05-29T03:11:00-07:00&max-results=7
And this to download TWRP for EUI 5.8: http://revolutionlemax2.blogspot.com.es/2016/07/twrp-302-para-nueva-stock-rom-eui-5815s.html
the site is in spanish unfortunately, I can use google to translate, but do I need to root the device first, then put twrp, then flash?
Hi xterminater07,
As for any other ROM, you have to install a custom recovery as a first thing. There are usually 2 custom recoveries : TWRP and CWM. The x820 only has TWRP (as far as I know of course). So you have to "flash" TWRP before you can install your ROM.
Be cautious : some of the TWRP provided in the links may give you a weird result
Just take the one in the link from the OP and flash it... it should work I guess.
Then reboot into recovery (hold power and volume up while rebooting).
Once rebooted, just follow the on-screen options to install.
Regards.

thank you for the respond nexuspenguin, so flashing the twrp as mentioned would root the device as well? I have delt with prior android devices and you have to do a one click root, then put twrp. I didn't see a root method mentioned by the OP that's why I want to know what is the right steps to do lol...
Hi,
Nope : install TWRP first, root afterwards.
If you install a pre-rooted ROM no need to root.
If not, rooting is quite simple : download latest supersu.zip, transfer it to your phones storage, reboot into recovery (TWRP now !) flash the downloaded .zip... and reboot. You're done
Why use "all-in-one" programs when it's so easy to do it manually ?
Regards.
FRED
P.S. : I flashed the TeamSPAIN 15S that is also given as 100% rooted. But I found out it is not. So, despite what's advertised you may have to install SuperSU again.
Theres two version of teamspain, which one is the "best" and closest to the stock one as possible without any bugs? Also both seems to say spanish focused but english language should be no issue right?

Hi,
I would advise the other version as this one will leave some bloatware from LeTV... unless, of course, you want it
Without any bugs ? You are aware that there's no such thing as a bugfree system, are you
Kidding apart, I am using the other version and I found no bugs after 1 and 1/2 days of use.
Be advised that there's also a third version from Cuoco92 that isn't advertised here (yet) but that you can download on AFH.
All three are very close to stock.
And I must say that I find the EUI quite nice to use even though not as snappy as other ROM's that are much closer to AOSP.
Regards.
nexuspenguin, I did see the cuoco92 latest version on afh. Is that version similar to this and what are the differences? Also can you write the steps on how to put twrp and supersu for this phone in english? I don't want to translate by machine to english and screw up my phone somewhere :\

installing 15S Pure will have English option ? will continue to get OTA Updates from LeEco ?
10x
Gil
I just flashed this rom over my stock rom but I seem to lose the System Update app icon on the home screen and can't find it anywhere. Can you show me how to put it back steve_mars or how to update from OTA without that app?
All Custom ROM are modified and OTA can´t work.
And if you rooted phone and/or install TWRP, OTA don´t work either.
Oh so we will just have to wait for someone to put a rooted image of the OTA files or the next version then?
Hello All, I have a problem. I just flash this rom on my x820 but i goot a bootloop after the install all is ok but the phone always reboot maybe someone can help me ?
I have the same problem. I use fastboot and command "fastboot -w" and after that boot normally.
I have the same problem. @rzapsko , you did thar after the install?!
After the bootloop, you juat connected in fastboot mode as run that line to erase data?!
Thank you.
Hello, thank for the answer but can you describe all the procedure? you mean that after running the install and all done you have to open cmd and run fastboot command ?
(sorry for my english) Instal adb drivers. Unzip TWRP from link. Run command line (cmd) and go to this folder. You can use command "CD.." and "CD <folder name>" to change folder. Turn on phone to fastboot mode (power and vol-). Connect to PC. Write in cmd fasboot -w.

HUAWEI HR5 [KII-L05] (Canadian Rogers)

I have this canadian version of Huawei honor 5x, and I've been scouring to find answers to whether if am i able to flash a custom rom such as cyanogenmod or not. Can anyone please help me out with this; I've already made several post and it get unanswered. Sofar I've managed to unlock the bootloader, flashed twrp, and rooted it. When I tried installing CM 13 from a thread on this site, I always get the "error 7" and I tried deleting the 2nd line in the meta-inf and rezipping the rom and reflashing; results remain the same.
Here's more info on my phone:
Build#: KII-L05C654B330
EMUI 4.0
Hopefully this will answer your question.
You have a slight typo in your thread title, the Canadian version is the GR5.
I have the same phone as you, and am currently running Lineage OS which is the only one so far that the developers have stated they support all variants (except firmware with VOLTE). Even though they support all variants, thus far the zips they provide still have a line where they assert, so you need to edit out those lines in the updater script. But everything works including fingerprint.
Now, I am currently on chatr, so I do not know if LTE is enabled or not as chatr doesn't use LTE, just 3G. But I do have a backup of my ROM in case you need it. My Backup is from the Zoom Mobile version (Rogers subsidiary/MVNO) which means it doesn't have all the Rogers bloatware apps. But same firmware. Also, I did read here that you need to be running recent firmware so your firmware etc is up to date. I trust you ran all the Huawei updates prior?
Have a look at Lineage OS. It's awesome.

Hai bud , he mentioned that he is on emui 4 . So we have necessary proof that he is on marshmallow which we require to flash a rom on 5x:highfive:
And after thinking for a while , the last version (latest updates) have modem issues so custom roms may have stopped working for u due to this. I have solutions for u .
Hi Chaos Storm!
I'm fellow Canadian and just got GR5 on kijiji for my daughter.
Just couple quick questions: what ROM do you have now? (i.e. which one you recommend?)
Are there any tricks to flash? I'm having issue now - unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP, SU. But when I try to boot into TWRP I get stock recovery. Can boot into TWRP only from TWRP app or ADB command...
Then I tried to flash LinOS 14 but got Error 7...
Thanks in advance!!!

Not sure what happened there. When you unlocked the bootloader did you reboot at least once to allow it to reset all data? I've had issues before if I unlock a bootloader then immediately flash something.
I know TWRP should ask you if you want to prevent stock recovery from being restored when you exit, always say yes. (It should only ask once)
Did you edit the updater-script in the Lineage install zip? You need to remove the first line or two where it says: "assert device" or something like that.
If all else fails, boot the phone into fastboot, flash twrp again, and make sure you "fastboot reboot recovery" so the unit doesn't have a chance to try and restore the factory recovery. Then try flashing your rom again.
Thanks for reply! With the help of fellow members I figured it out - I was holding POWER button TOO LONG And if that happens, phone goes into built in recovery... You suppose to let button go once you see first splash screen.
So it's all good!
Thanks!!!

I will have a look. As things would be, I also need to restore my GR5 so I'll find it for both of us.

Exploring full ROM options with XT1650-03

So I just unpacked my MOTO Z with great anticipation.
However, I immediately ran into the issue where I can't backup my old phone using TiBU and restore it on my new shining gadget. I was VERY unsuccessful rooting the device.
So I went all in and installed RR which I'm using on all other devices as well. Used this TWRP to do it.
While RR is working well, it doesn't have some of the nice things stock ROM had, like the keyboard adjustability, screen on on hand-over and some adjustments in the camera app. Doesn't really matter, but I'd like to give stock another try before I inevitably commit to RR which will no doubt improve in the mean time as well.
Now, for my problem:
Using the recovery mentioned above, I made a full backup of the phone before I messed with it. Now that same recovery doesn't properly restore that backup: the phone doesn't boot when I restore that backup. it never leaves the bootloader unlocked warning screen.
So I figured: bad backup, let's get a stock image. Eh, again no go: motorola doesn't even publish those. So I grabbed the XT1650-03_GRIFFIN_RETEU... from here.
That one again doesn't even fully flash: I tried partial flash (system partition + recovery partition) - which flashed but didn't boot; then tried full flash, starting with the gpt.bin - but this one didn't even flash. reported some errors and that was it.
So, while not bricked, I'm far from any degree of control over my new phone. I'd like to improve that!
Any advice?
@velis74 to flash firmware you must use adb/fastboot. Is that what you mean by "flashed"?

Yes, "flashing" of the "stock image" I tried to do with fastboot - that series of commands flashing one partition after another with images in the archive. I just didn't want to list all those commands in the post because there's more than 20...
If you´ve already updated your Stock, untouched and locked ROM from Marshmallow to Nougat, then you won't be able to Flash back to Marshmallow Stock ROM, because your Bootloader was already updated to Nougat. That's why the whole process fails. Since there's no official RETEU Nougat Stock ROM yet, use the RETBR one. It's practically the same and works as it should: https://firmware.center/firmware/Mo...ubsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
But keep in mind that you won't be able to relock your bootloader, since Motorola/Lenovo haven't released signed Nougat Stock ROMs yet.

new Mate10 Pro - how to root (i have unlock code) and how to proceed

Hello
I have a new M10 Pro (BLA-A09) here in the US, and I haven't activated it yet as I remain undecided about using it. The activity in this thread is limited, and I thought that there were more ROMS available. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I see very little activity for this phone. My current phone is an LG V10 which is unrootable, therefore moving to the M10P would be a good change since I can at least root the M10P and remove the bloatware.
I have a bootloader unlock code that I got on the last day! And I am on build 8.0.0.65 (C567).
I've read most of the current threads in this forum and the ROMS/kernels forum, and I remain confused as to what can be done with this phone.
I ask:
1. Can the phone truly be rooted? If yes, what for? To remove bloatware only? Or are there rooms (xirin, etc)?
2. I think that I read that rooting removes the data partition. Is that true? And how does that hurt?
3. I know that I can rebrand the phone with funkyhuawei. Why would I want to do that here in the US?
4. An OTA that follows a root, requires re-rooting the phone after the OTA, right?
Thank you for the help. I am excited about using this very powerful phone, I superficially read some threads before buying it, and I thought that it would be a very rootable and ROMable phone; I am not sure if that is the case.

1: yes. For anything you need root for, really.
Most bloatware can be removed without root, unless you want to start removing system apps. There are a few treble roms available over at the treble forum https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble.
Most, if not all, should be compatible. And you have https://openkirin.net/ which are for Huawei phones.
2. It does not. Well, it depends on where you read it. TWRP couldn't decrypt /data before, so you had to Format it and remove the encryption flag in fstab, but that is not needed anymore. (Official TWRP still can't, see download link below)
3. Do not rebrand. A09 is not compatible with L09/L29/AL and you will brick.
Also, if you had used it you would now be bootloader locked. What FH does is that it flashes an included oeminfo that has dualsim enabled. This also changes your IMEI, IMEI2 and SN in fastboot, making your old unlock code invalid. And right now there is no way to get a new one (I'm not sure if DC still works with A09, it doesn't on C432 as of B145.)
4. Yes. As ramdisk is overwritten you have to flash Magisk again (I suggest Magisk as SuperSU is not updated anymore)
Basically, you want to:
Go here to download TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/development/huawei-mate-10-pro-twrp-3-2-1-0-t3769904
Magisk: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Or Beta Magisk, can be buggy: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/beta-magisk-v13-0-0980cb6-t3618589
Backup your sdcard contents.
Go to Settings -> System -> About Phone -> Tap Build number until Developer options is enabled
Go to Settings -> System -> Developer options
Enable OEM Unlocking
Reboot to fastboot.
Unlock bootloader using: fastboot oem unlock ##unlock_code##
Use Volume key to move to 'Yes' on phone, then power to accept.
Wait for format to finish, setup phone again.
Transfer magisk zip to sdcard.
Reboot to fastboot again
Flash TWRP using: fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp_bla_alp_0.7.img
Reboot to recovery by holding Power and Volume Up.
Enter your Pin
Now flash Magisk
Finished.

Thanks a lot ante0. I really appreciate it.
1. You pasted
Enable OEM Unlocking
Reboot to fastboot.
How do I reboot into fastboot?
2. So, can I use twrp? I really like it and have been using it for years on other phones and tablets.
3. I will use magisk and not SU, right?
4. I've been using the phone on wifi only and without a sim card, so it's not active on ATT here in the US. In the twrp thread I see that for OTA I need the following:
Flash with TWRP Magisk Uninstaller
Flash in Fastboot Mode recovery_ramdisk.img (=EMUI Recovery) + ramdisk.img + kernel.img
In Systemupdate settings (dot menu) use "Download and install current full package" (=FullOTA-MF, some GB) instead of only OTA (some MB)
Wow. How complicated, but I'm sure it's not that difficult. Although, in that same thread, I also read that some people have installed the OTA without removing magisk.
5. Kirin or treble roms? I can't see screenshots of either, so how do we decide?
Thanks again

1. Either you can use adb: adb reboot bootloader
Or power off phone then hold volume down and plug in usb
Or plug in usb, reboot, hold volume down.
2. Yes, it's fully functional.
3. Magisk is preferable. Mainly because it's being updated, and can pass Safetynet if any of your apps need it to pass.
4. You *should* only need to flash recovery_ramdisk (I guess you can use the one from the last update on http://pro-teammt.ru/firmware-database/?firmware_model=BLA-A09&firmware_page=0)
To get recovery_ramdisk you need to download update.zip from pro-teammt.ru, then extract update.app from it.
Download Huawei Update Extractor https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2433454
Extract Huawei Update Extractor zip and run the exe. Go to settings in the program and disable header check.
Next open up update.app in it, rightclick on recovery_ramdisk and click on Extract Selected.
Now you can flash that image using fastboot (fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY_RAMDISK.img)
This will restore stock recovery and will let you flash OTA directly from System Update.
The reason you have to restore stock recovery is because phone will reboot to recovery to update, but if you have TWRP flashed it won't update at all
You would have to flash back both TWRP and Magisk after update finishes.
(You can actually flash FULLOTA Update.zip directly in TWRP if you use HuRUpdater, but seeing as the US Mate 10 Pro rarely get any updates it's not really needed.)
5. Kirin is treble, they are built for Huawei devices rather than being just for treble enabled devices.
I've only really used Lineage, but moved back to stock as TWRP does not work with Treble roms. It should work once we get 8.1 firmware though.

Would you say that it makes sense for me to, when I put the sim in the phone and use it (if I decide to), to attempt an OTA update first, and then do root and whatever else? My phone's build is from December 2017, so I assume that ATT will have some sort of update for the phone.
You mentioned that the US Mate10 rarely gets updates. So, then how would any of us get any updates , security or otherwise? How will we get 8.1, for example? Are you in the US, btw? What ROM are you using on this phone?

I do not have a US Mate 10 Pro (A09), but the global (L29) on C432.
You can read a bit in this thread about the US version updates:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/development/huawei-mate-10-pro-bla-a09-c567-usa-t3775258
I guess the lack of updates is due to the problems Huawei has with the US government. :/
You do get updates, but there seem to be a few months between them.
I would update and then root. There is an update in that thread which is fairly new, but it has not been indexed by Firmware Finder (pro-teammt.ru). You could flash it using TWRP and HuRUpdater as I don't think you have Nocheck recovery for A09.

[ Guide ] Successfully Rooted SM-T725 LTE

Dear All , this method maybe already here somewhere ,
i have tried to root this specific device and i ran into many issues !
but successfully i have done it .
i'll upload the patched file here and i'll mention what method i have done ! ..
unlock boot loader is a must . ( Please read about it in google , All Samsung devices is the same method )
u might repeat the process to times until it successfully unlocked and greyed-out !
Next download this firmware only to be able to run the patched AP .
un-tick Auto-reboot before flashing .
once flash done , power + Volume down to restart , then volume up with power until u boot into the recovery
wipe data . restart . done
to make sure u have done every thing correctly u'll see RED massage once u boot you're device
Firmware ( This is UAE Firmware " T725XXS1ATC5_T725OJM1ASJ3_XSG " ) All Languages included . Link
Patched AP File Link
Please Note that i'm not responsible if u break your Tablet ! .

No ! ..
Hi
Do I just need to use odin to flash the Firmware you mentioned then use ODIN again to flash the patched ap
I can just add that with this specific fw version and patched ap everything worked on LTE version but I might add my little deviations ...
1st original firmware flash (BL,AP,CP,CSC-non-home one) instantly followed by wipe data in recovery mode.
2nd After the initial setup + wifi connection I installed and updated magisk.
3rd "adb restart bootloader" (here i am not sure if it mattered but anyway) and flush again with the provided Patched AP File (BL,the_patched_AP,CSC - the home one this time ... using CP failed with modem err with me so I just skipped it here)
4th get trough the init setup again with wifi on and open magisk which will install more stuff.
The prerequisites still apply oem unlocked bootloader before you start and keep your battery at least 60-70% since the process drained mine a lot.
You know you are on the right track when you have warning with tablet bootloader is unlocked (at startup yellow) and tablet not running Samsung's official software (red after the first one)
Ive just bought this SM-T725 model android 11. There is no sign of OEM Unlock Bootloader under development. Does anyone know how I can unlock this.

The option only shows up when you are connected to the internet.
Thanks for reply mate, I got it figured. I also manage to get root and twrp recovery but not both at the same time. After flashing and using twrp recovery I then lose root after reboot and have to flash a patched magisk bundle over odin again. Bit inconvenient but I only intend using twrp now and then for backup/recovery.
Can you recommend a stable rom for this device - far too much google bloat on it for my liking. I tried latest lineage but found it unstable.

Just install LineageOS. Clean, no Bloat, everything smooth and you can have TWRP and Root/Magisk at the same time.
Depending on how much Google you want to have on your device, you might rather choose LOS+MG ( https://lineage.microg.org/) I can highly recommend it. You get rid of Google which debloats it even more and is a plus for your privacy but almost everything works (at leat for me. But migh depend on your needs)
If you like Google, just use normal LineageOS (https://lineageos.org) + GAPPS
Thanks for reply. Will try the LOS ROM later. Wish Google crap would disappear totally. I hate it enormously.
By the way which folder am I looking for on that LOS ROM download page
Ah gts4lv I presume

Recently switched to using MicroG Lineage. Timely enough, MicroG passes the SafetyNet now as per the instructions mentioned below and indicated in the attached screenshot. For the fingerprint, I had selected the T720 from the list.
https://www.reddit.com/r/MicroG/comments/shmpng
Along with Aurora store installed as a service, I think you don't need Google anymore.

I'm having some problem here:
I can install LineageOS, I can root/Magisk, I can have TWRP, but not all together at once.
Can you help me on how to do this?
Working on a SM-T725 of course, actually rooted, lineage and TWRP installed, but my Magisk can't install modules, it seems it doens't have root privileges.
Thanks in advance for your answer
anybody have an updated one, the file has been archived on the said link... thanks in advance
