New G6 H870DS Arrived (and it's good) - My First Impressions... - LG G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi everyone, I bought the H870DS unlocked from China to the UK and wanted to share my initial findings. S8 would have been nice but decided on the G6. My research into which model to get offline led me to the H870DS for it's more fuller features - I don't particularly need 2 sims but it's nice to have if needed.
Likes:
* 64gb storage - as I understand it, most countries around the world or even all single sim models have 32.
* I'm LOVING this 18:9 shape, easy to hold and having plenty screen real estate is lovely to use, especially web pages and text as more content can be seen vertically.
* Screen to body ratio.
* Build quality and feel of the device.
* Flat screen (as opposed to the s8\s8+) is nice to use and to install screen protectors.
* I'm delighted to discover I do indeed have... QUAD DAC I thought only the G600(x) models had this?! But I do and I'm happy.
* Lightweight OS, closer to pure Android than I expected, no bloatware / only minimal extras.
* That wide-angle camera!! :victory:
* Built-in email app is excellent for using multiple email accounts, better than my old Xperia and no need to use third party.
* Fingerprint scanner works just fine.
Dislikes:
* Doesn't pick up 5ghz Wifi networks which shocked me but not the end of the world. Online searching revealed others with this issue and there's a way to bring back 5ghz capabilities for the G5 (and some other non-LG devices) but nothing about the G6. Maybe this is an H870DS thing but if anyone knows a way to get 5ghz I'd appreciate it.
* Only used the camera briefly and so far disappointed with the lower light snaps. I'm looking into how to use the more advanced and manual settings.
* Typing fast is less accurate than my old Xperia. I'll look into alternative keyboards.
* Still at 7.0.
* Factory restore - In all my Android devices I've been able to encrypt the internal storage just before doing a factory restore, but I can't find a way to do this on my G6 - Only to encrypt the external SD card - again if I'm missing something let me know.
* I don't think I have wireless charging (only American models), I'm unable to test, but I really don't mind.
* LG has not added any HDMI capabilities this time, no MHL or Slimport. Fair enough I can use a Chromecast or Miracast etc, but cable'd video out would be nice for me.
I look forward to unlocking the bootloader and rooting and custom ROMS when these things become more established. Anyway thanks for reading!

I have 2 notes:
- My G6 have 5ghz wifi connection, I think it's up to your router? My router support n mode (2.4ghz) and ac mode (5ghz). And I connect to both wifi
- About the keyboard, try Gkeyboard (previously Google keyboard). It works flawlessly on LG G6.
Just my 2 cents.

Very interesting... could you please verify the Dutch language is supported in the H870DS?
I'm a bit worried about the wifi, the specs says it supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac + MIMO. Could you please check another 5 ghz router?
Thanks!

There might be a bug with 5GHz WiFi on LG G6.
I have noticed the phone was not seeing my 5GHz wlan at home. After restarting the G6 it was able to connect to 5GHz wlan again.

It is very different to the H870? I have been searching a bit and I have seen that there are some different network frequencies, have you got any problems with connectivity?

Look at your wifi router settings. Maybe you have to change your 5GHz network from 80MHz to 40MHz

I'm European (living in Italy) and i need a dual sim top-end smartphone. I've been considering the new G6 and I could get it for a fair price on eGlobalCentral.
Is the GPS working fine in the UK or does it need any configuration? Is there any Chinese bloatware or anything that would look out of place for European use? Thank you.

Non ti preoccupare Gpat.
I bought a taiwanese H870DS from Eglobal, it arrived in four days from UK, the GPS works just fine here in France, there's no bloatware at all, nothing in chinese and no exotic stuff. Molto soddisfatto!

GPS works great and no funny Chinese etc. bloatware.

I was thinking order G6 DS bit some people had bad experience with eGlobal..where is the best buy store in Europe to buy?

The H870DS is not officially sold in Europe, so there are only several Chinese online shops (standalone, or on Ebay) which offer this device, using an European warehouse. Almost all of those have a bad reputation, because your expectations do not match the fact, that you are buying *not* from European sellers. Delivery time, no legal warranty, no LG warranty, sending in for repair to LG Center will take some efforts.

What Xperia phone did you have before ? I hesitate between G6 and XZ.

Have you solved it ?

Mine picks 5Ghz WiFi just fine. I didn't do anything special. Perhaps you should tweak your router settings?

I have the H870DS and I have no issues with 5Ghz at all. g/n and a/n/ac are enabled on my router. You could try changing your routers wireless settings to a compatibility mode of b/n/g and a/n

Just want to chip in and say my G6 arrived today from eglobal central, h870ds. Like you it wont see 5g wifi networks which is a bit odd. Has anyone found a solution?
Going to install lg bridge later to see if theres a newer softwarw update than is available via OTA.

Just a quick question...Is this DS model running 100% stock official firmware? Did anyone get any OTA updates?

Yes, stock firmware for the Taiwan model (well ,mine is anyway). I was able to install 1 OTA update, but had to use LG Bridge software on my PC to download the very latest software update.

[Q] Custom ROM on Chinese dual-SIM fake phone?

Hi!
I'm planning on buying a Chinese copy of HD2. I'm not concerned that it's 100% fake and build quality is not on par with real HTC, cause I really need the dual SIM functionality.
My questions are:
1. can it be SID-unlocked (does it have to be?)
2. will any of the custom WWE ROMs install and run on it?
3. will both SIMs be visible in any custom ROM or do I have to install a specific ROM which supports dual SIM dual standby functionality?
Whoever got to play with these Chinese phones, please let me know!
Thank you!
im pretty sure that it wont even rom stock windows mobile 6.5 i think there will be stock chinese software wich isnt even a smartphone
@ dim4x4
the Oboe Phone is a dual SIM with WM6.5, if u get ur Clone Phone and u can get the ROM dumped, edited and reflashed. i beleive u will be able to make a custom ROM.
WBR
Siemens Lover
there r chinese clones out there with windows mobile 6.5 running but most of the clones i've seen are not even smartphones... they r running chiinese software made to look like winmo. and some runs a chinese special system derived/modified from the latest windows CE builds.
oh ya and definately you cant use any of the roms designed for real HD2 coz the hardware and bios design was diff.
Just grab a (HTC) HD2 and another cheap phone from Ebay if You really need to use 2 sim cards . Thats what I did. You can buy a small handy SE W880i for like 15 pounds in uk and it also supports 3G network. Dont buy a China copy or You will get stuck with a crap phone that can easly develop a fault. Its not worth Your money.

1. Yes , it can but there´s no need for
2. Google for it. If you detect a custom ROM for that special device you might test it. I suppose there isn´t. And never, never try to flash a ROM for another device. It would certainly brick your phone
3. It depends on your luck to find a ROM for that special device. Otherwise see 2.
Thanks for the advice, guys! Will let you know how it goes.
Hi Dim,
I bought one of these chinese phones... for my chinese wife (because these chinese phones look so cool)
First it's plastic in bad quality! you will get scratches by your fingernails!
Second, the audio quality for talking on caller and receipient side were worse. The speakers are in bad quality: mp3 bad, talking bad, listening bad.
Third, signal strength must be high to work. Often you lose your signal and can't call anyone.
All in one, i can say, that you waste your money. Mine looks like a iPhone 4, but thats all you have on pro's side. On con's side the three points i wrote above.
I bought a new mobile, galaxy from Samsung, and my wife is healed from thinking that the chinese mobiles could be better in any aspect.
Hope this will stop you from buying this crap!
hi
most of people who reply on you,they dont know anything at all about smart chinese phone
and about flashing rom to chinese smart phones will require differant software depends on cpu, because chinese usally use hisillicon cpu or MTK cpu,so when you decide to buy just ask for condation that they send you software and rom.and have fun with cheap and great quilty,and if you decide to buy some model you can ask here for advice
Hi,
With me the same. Still the proud owner of a HTC Universal. I need a "Dual SIM Standby" and came across this chinese vendor. Here are the specs:
-Dual sim card dual standy
-CPU: Huawei Hisilicon K3533, 533MHz,could updated to 600MHz;
-2G ROM+2G bits RAM;
-Windows mobile system 6.5 and Android 2.2(Optional)
-GSM EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
-Support TF card up to 16GB;
-5.0M pixels wtih double cameras;
-WLAN/WI-FI 802.11b/g; *GPS Navigation;
-Support G-Sensor function;
-Support Microsoft Office word/excel/powerpoint etc and email;
-Support IM:MSN,SKYPE,facebook,twitter,OICQ,QQ etc;
-4.3inch WQVGA Touch screen,65,000colors,400x800 pixels;
-Connection:Bluetooth 2.0,WI-FI,EDGE,Active Sync and USB2.0;
-JAVA 2.0, GPRS class 10 and WAP2.0;
-Video Format:3GP,MP4,AVI,ASF,WMV,RM ect;
-Music Format:MP3,WMA,WAV,AMR,ect;
-Photo Format:Jpg,gif,png,BMP,Flash ect;
-Ringtone Format:MP3,WMA,AMR and WAV;
-2PCS Lithium-ion rechargeable Batteries:1650mAh/3.7V;
-Dimensions: 107x51x13mm, 128g weight
So, indeed the CPU is not a 1 GHz Snapdragon™-prosessor, but 533 Mhz Hisilicon. But look at the 2G ROM and 2 Gb RAM! Wonder if this is for compensating on the lower CPU?
But here is the thing. I am not a real "Flasher". I basically kept my Universal as-is, and installed a shell on top to have a new look. I started playing around with new ROMs just to improve the available memory on ROM and RAM.
The question is in this case if most of my WM5 apps will work on this Chinese phone? Second question is then, like "@latersooner" says, who on XDA can assist in flashing Chinese ROMs?
Maybe a suggestion could be to have a seperate entry on the forum list "Chinese clones" or something? Just an idea. I see that they are ahead of the competition in Europe, releasing both dual, 3 and 4 SIM phones, both Windows, Android and other (Symbian?).

Absolutely agree. Do your research first guys! There are some very interesting Chinese smartphones out there. If you're only looking for cheap imitation, yes, you're bound to be disappointed.
Having said that, China manufacturers are now starting to make dual sim Android smartphones with excellent specs. Only thing missing is 3G. Must say, I don't really miss it. 2G is fine for social media updates and email. Only for heavy surfing you need 3G.
I'm very pleased with the Flying Star FG8 I bought recently
I have a lot of information on chinese models star A2000, A1000, A5000 and will be making a thread shortly covering everything I know including rooting, fixes, roms and recovery.
i agree , this phone have bad speker and bad accesories
-.- so you need to buy acc agan
Chinese not-fake phones
I live in Africa. There's a brand that is very widespread here called TECNO - Chinese. Several of their phones run Android, the later models being the N3 and N7.
I bought an N3 out of curiosity - at $94 it did not seem to be a big risk. It supports 2 SIMs, one 3g, and the other vanilla. Seems to work OK as an Android phone (Gingerbread). My only real criticism is the camera, which tends to produce purple pictures in bright lighting.
It seems quite well made. I have been able to root it, and can get to it normally via ADB and Fastboot. I've written a few small applications and everything seems to work as expected. However, I have not been able to find a CWM recovery for it that works, and so far have not seen a ROM that claims to support 2 SIMS.
A single SIM phone is a liability here in Tanzania. There's one operator - Airtel - who can do 3G at a reasonable price, but their calls are expensive. The others are GSM, but what everyone you know uses for normal telephony.
So even if I could find a CWM recovery, and flash CyanogenMod, I'd be robbing myself. Why is the rest of the world stuck on this single SIM thing?

Xiaomi Mi3 16GB Snapdragon (WCDMA)

Hello,
I dont know if my topic fits here in the category (General)
But i have a fuw questions about my new smartphone (Xiaomi Mi3 WCDMA version)
Because i have always used a Google phone (android) MIU5 is a hole diffrent OS.
So my question is there a possible way to install Google Play, and that is very stable on it?
Because i know xda-board is a very advanced board if it is something about phones, so if somebody can help me out here.???
------------
My Xiaomi Mi-3 Review.
New phone:
Since Xiaomi had released the Mi-3, there was an outbreak.
With the specifications and the low price Xiaomi had set an smartphone that is not only in China so populair but abroad the country to.
And you can see it with sales they made everytime the new stock was out.
In serval minutes there was a bunch of them sold out. The biggest one was more than 100.000 units in less than 90 seconds. You can see how populair the phone was. Because the new version with the latest highly clocked Snapdragon800 in it. Xiaomi set up an new variaty of people to there market.
Xiaomi is still out of stock in the most versions, and will be for a fuw moths.
Design:
The design of the Xiaomi Mi-3 is one of the most beuutifull phones ever made. The roundings the buttons the ultra-thin magnesium alluminum alloy gives the phone a very nice look. The roughness of the phone with his big 5 inch screens feels so nice in your hands. You dont have trouble with using one hand (only if you have big hands)
Hardware:
Xiaomi haves two versions of the Mi-3. The tegra4 TD-SCDMA only can be used in China, and the Snapdragon WCDMA an European/American/others parts of the world. Both CPU’s are diffrent clocked. the Tegra4 is clocked to max with 1.8Ghz, and the Snapdragon800 is clocked 2.3Ghz. The driffrence in the speed of the phone is actualy the same. Both versions are smooth tasking. There is no lag or something bothering you. With his 2GB on both version you are for now a happy guy. You can play the latest games on your phone as you want. With the new amazing LG Full-HD resolution IPS screen it makes the so beuatifull. The colors of the phone pop out. The angles on the screen are nice, somebody next to you will not having trouble to not see the screen.
Software:
Mi-3 is running on two diffrent android version. The tegra4 runs at an 4.2.3 android. And Snapdragon800 runs on an 4.3 newer version of the android. When you recieve your phone you can choose if you want to use it in chinese or English. If you choose english you still will see some chinese signs at the screen. This is one thing that the developers dont have chainged. But i cant hurt. You will not recieve Google App store on it, you must download it by your self. Xiaomi is very smart if you wanna use Google services, you must have an Xiaomi account, and trough the account you can download google installer. And from there you can use any google app you want.
Yes, it is possible!

I don't know if this is the right category for you question, but I'm not a moderator so I don't need to know that actually.
What I know on the other hand is that you can easily install Google Apps (GApps) on your Xiaomi Mi3. You won't need any experience with flashing gapps from internal storage or SD-card, it is easy as pie!
Once you have your phone open the MIUI Store and search for "Google". The developer Eric Xiang has put together an excellent Google Installer app. The name is in Chinese, but just search for it in English and you will find it. The installer will take care of everything else.
If that doesn't work, you should try rooting your device and flashing Gapps manually.
thank you in advance.
The GAPP store is in english right? Not chinese.
Hope i will can fix it. Uhm are there customroms made for the XIAOMI or not? So i can try that to if it doesent work for me...

and yet another one by a friend of mine:
I have the phone for about 3/4 days right now.
And the MIUIV5 launcher, if you using it for the first time. Its a little bit strange.
But after using it for a while, you learn fast and see how powerfull the launcher is.
The 1ste you always do is install gapps on your phone.
I Had to make some questions an supported boards, to get it work. But now i am pleased with the usage of the phone and the powerfull hardware whats in it.
Love the phone for now, will definitly stay at the MIUI community.
One thing: i hope they can fix an Android Stock 4.4 Kitkat OS with multi-lang....
I dont know why Cynogenmod doesent come for Xiaomi Mi-3, or other custom roms for it.
XDA-developers are the moest anticipated people for smartphones, i hope they will be release an Xiaomi mi-3 miuiV5 or later v6 CUSTOM ROM OR SOMETHING.
i tough there will be alot of them because it is Androind but nothing
A nice review. I have a great apetytna this smartphone. Are you able to compare its screen with LG G2 or HTC One? I wonder if it is comparable to, or better or worse.

The phone by it selfs is great, but there are some issues that i must solve before you can use the phone.
My issues are:
1. 3G not working well <- not solved
2. Ram is filling quikly <- not solved
3. Google account had some problems (was my fault because did not install google contacts.apk) <- solved
If these things are solved, than you have an bad-ass phone..

I'm using the latest MIUI version: 4.1.24 in Polish and I have no problems from the department in both the 3 and 2G. Everything in my MI 3 WCDMA works perfectly.
I have the CDMA version with miuiV5. It works great. No problems encountered. I just wish I knew how to make a custom ROM. I have a developer rom and the V5 rom. Tried both and they both work fantastic.
Maybe you know how to turn off the meter data. After exceeding the set limit further changes cause complications itelefon off my data transmission. I do not need to set this limit, I enclosed it with curiosity, and I have no problem.

In my opinion the mi3 offers the best hardware on the whole market to a fantastic price. I can't understand why there are no developers for roms like AOKP or CM or AOSP.

It is not. Perhaps it's successor - the rumoured MI3S - might have this feature.
Btw. I have a 64GB Mi3 and so far I am very happy with this phone; even without LTE-support.
I am very happy with my phone. It is a 64GB Grey Mi3. The 3G on AT&T is fine but slow.
The Data speeds are not that fast but it gets the job done. I get some time out errors from time to time.
I like to be able to get the Temp that displays on the lock screen and home screen(default) to display current location instead of in China. Can't seem to get the default Maps app to work in the US even with it locking in on GPS it displays China. Google Maps works fine but a little show and sometimes has defaulted back to a Chinese location first until a signal lock happens and then it will find my current location.
Starbucks app doesn't work on my phone.
When I click on an autocorrected word that has a red underline on it the app will crash and send me back to home. Bug has been reported.
When saving pictures from the internet it doesn't default to a standard folder. It uses the cloud folder and even with sync to cloud off I have to move it to the main local folder to get the pictures available to send or attach to email.
Speedtest.net doesn't connect to show download speeds. It will show a slow upload speed.
Visual VoiceMail doesn't seem to work on AT&T's network. If I give them my old HTC One IEMI number the visual voicemail works but the DATA does not. I can live with it for now.
Anyone got the Visual Voicemail to work with connecting Data on AT&T? If so what phone did they put in the system to make it work? the HTC One does not work. Confirmed this twice.
If they release an LTE version that would work with AT&T here that would be killer!!! I really do like the phone. The size, the weight, the shape. I would love to see this one in White or Silver 64GB.

In my opinion the mi3 offers the best hardware on the whole market to a fantastic price. I can't understand why there are no developers for roms like AOKP or CM or AOSP.

There will be very soon, devices squad on snapdragon 800 SoC : xperia z1, zr (?), LG G2, Note 3 and more ... mean we can start poke their code to used as "base" to start write device tree on cm / aosp/ aokp. I have also very limited skill to write android code ... let us learn together. Mine on stock MIUIv5 and I satisfy with the phone performance. Miui serve what we need for basic computed including archiving/extracting files. It's handy i did not need to carry my laptop anymore when travelling

Oneplus 2 released in China Today

The Oneplus 2 has been available for reservation on jd.com, a site similar to Amazon, in China for the past week. Over 400,000 people reserved the phone. A reservation allowed the purchase of the phone starting 9:30am this morning. I managed to snag one and should take delivery of it later this afternoon. I was a bit disappointed to find out that it comes with HydrogenOS instead of OxygenOS. However, I'm sure that can be rectified in the near future. I purchased the 64GB model for 2399RMB, about $385USD.
Anyone else living in or ordering from China managed to get their hands on one?
EDIT: It just arrived. The build quality is impressive, especially coming from an LG G3. The accuracy of the fingerprint sensor in my brief tests was good, and I like the ability to unlock from standby. Not a fan of HydrogenOS, but I can see that it might have some appeal to people who like a more minimalistic android experience.
i also live in china and thinking to buy it ,i am just curious about camera quality and how much different hydrogen OS from Oxygen OS?
@khr0n0s Please post Antutu Benchmark results and Camera samples.Also comment on charging time and battery life.
I was gonna buy this or the new moto X, was inclining towards the moto X which would release in September, but now I am thinking that I'll just wait for the new OnePlus phone coming later this year. A company executive said that that phone would be the 'premium' phone, and that u don't think they are gonna add more than 200 $s (which would add up to the same price as the 64gb moto X style) to the price tag no matter how Premium they make it. Also, it is likely that that one will have the snapdragon 820 and a 2k screen. I hope this one has no hardware issues so I can be much more confident in waiting for the upcoming one, knowing that it likely won't have much hardware issues as well.

@ali_ge - You might have difficulty getting hold of one. I was just lucky. They sold 30,000 units in 64 seconds! HydrogenOS is very simple and has no home screens / widgets. The phone boots up in to an app drawer with a large clock at the top. Not many options to customise. It also has no google apps, but that is no different to any other Chinese handset. There is an english language option, but there is still quite a lot of Chinese notifications especially in the bundled apps. I will definitely be switching to OxygenOS when a ROM becomes available.
@bhu1 - Has the premium one plus been officially announced yet? I read an interview with Carl Pei in which he said it would be more about style than specs, but it was very vague. Even if they do release it later this year, if they use the same invite system then it will be difficult to get hold of for a few months.
@vaisakh7 - I'm at work now without the phone. I can post the benchmark and sample pictures this evening. I don't plan to use the phone as my main handset till I can install a custom recovery and flash with OxygenOS. This makes measuring charging time and battery life difficult.

Well yeah. Bootloader can be unlocked even now.. The thing is that we don't have factory image of OxygenOS yet.. As soon as we get it, we can flash it via fastboot.. Or we have to wait till International Version of OP2 goes on sale.. Then someone can easily upload the ROM Zip and we can flash it after unlocking bootloader and flashing custom recovery (we will have to wait a week atleast for a custom recovery imo) ... Or we can still do via fastboot but that will require extra efforts...
So hope OnePlus releases factory images of OxygenOS as soon as possible.
Is it possible also to unlock all international WCDMA/LTE bands when flashing OxygenOS on chinese version?

You don't have to unlock anything as it works just fine out of the box. I also ordered a 64GB version from Aliexpress.
edit: ok, LTE bands B5, B8 and B20 is not supported, but it is not a big deal for me as I mainly use B3 and B7.
I'm curious about the Antutu Benchmark, camera output and battery life.. OP, if you could posts more details, that would be great..
@Mermaidss @Aisakh7 @riyadh - AnTuTu benchmark as requested:
Here are some sample images. I think the camera is as good as LG G3.
For comparison, here is a low light photo from the LG G3 running Cyanogenmod:
OnePlus 2 running HydrogenOS:
Both images were taken using default settings. The OnePlus 2 is darker but more natural.
Pretty good!

Oreo Vs. Pie

Which is better as a daily. I'm already unlocked and rooted on Oreo... Runs perfect but I've read multiple comments about Pie being better...
Is it true? Opinions please and why...
Thanks. Hope everyone is safe at home
If you're happy with oreo. Don't upgrade to pie.

Especially for US998, nothing about Pie is "better" than the last stable Oreo. I'm on rooted Oreo with Magisk mods. US998 Pie is wonky and lots of trouble. LG never released the Open Market US998 Pie but only the U.S. Cellular US998 Pie. For people using other carriers like Verizon, some functionality is lost vs the Open Market US998 Oreo. For other Pie KDZ, it's a mixed bag.
However, if you decide to check it out and don't like it, then downgrading from Pie back to Oreo causes issues with camera, flashlight and other sensors and while there is the a workaround which mostly works, you still risk having to use permissive kernel/mode. I have this warning at the top of every Pie KDZ thread.
On stock Pie seems LG slowed the charging speed and one of our Telegram devs (who works on a stock-based Pie ROM) made a list of other stuff LG degraded in stock Pie vs stock Oreo. I just asked him to re-submit it and I'll post it here.
HOWEVER, to run AOSP/LOS-17 based ROMs you do need to install stock Pie. But I have never run a custom ROM on this phone since I bought it. In the past, since like 2010, I've had custom ROMs on every other Android phone and tablet -- and helped friends do the same. But on this phone, I kept it rooted stock with a couple of mods. Our AOSP custom ROM devs work very hard and we appreciate the developments -- but with my current job I need my phone to work at all times of the day and night. Best for me personally to run rooted stock.
________
From Aeron Li, the dev for AIX (stock based Pie ROM) and AIS (stock based Oreo ROM):
The pros and cons of Stock 9 Pie for LG v30:
CONS:
- lowered the processor frequencies at 518/800 MHz instead of 300 MHz and the Adreno graphics core at 257 MHz instead of 180 MHz in the Governor Interactive scheduler, which always works out of the box by default. Changing the scheduler requires a root and specialized programs for editing CPU / GPU parameters.
The result is twofold, on the one hand, an increase in speed (vaunted smoothness of the UI, which, in principle, is achievable by slightly different, MUCH MORE HUMAN METHODS) on the other hand, is a decrease in the battery life of the device, but since Android 9 has additional means of optimizing the battery, this is not so noticeable. Consider, the life time remained almost the same, but as a result we were simply deceived, because Google promises with the transition from Oreo to Pie an improvement in battery time, but in fact we do not have this.
- Lightweight sound driver. Stock Oreo calmly supports 384kHz / 32bit sound, and if you have certain tools, you can reconfigure it to output sound with improved quality by recounting with Aqstic and QuadDAC Saber. The 9 Pie driver does not have such an opportunity.
-LG removed FULLY ANT + support from 9 Pie. These are widely used (in Europe, the USA, Korea for sure) medical and sports devices - scales, sports trackers, bicycle microcomputers, etc. Why so is a mystery to me. It's a shame.
- device performance profiles + Thermal Engine profiles. They are awful. Not only that, in conjunction with the overestimated frequencies of the scheduler, by default the phone quickly “warms up”, thanks to them it starts to throttle faster to cool off. therefore, User Expirience is getting worse.
- depending on the region, the camera is trimmed in functionality. The same CinemaMode can write video either in FHD maximum or in UHD.
- Depending on the region, the WiFi settings functionality is cut. For example, for America, settings for displaying WiFi networks by signal level are available, the ability to select the carrier frequency for connecting to dual-frequency routers (auto / 2.49 / 5GHz), it is possible to choose the priority and the WiFi zone depending on the location (home / work / street ), there is an automatic connection to specialized WiFi XT networks.
- at some regions there is no way to transfer the access point to the 5GHz band. Only 2.4 GHz mode is available.
- Gestures (yes, neutered) are implemented using the launcher and not at the level of the system framework. Of course, I don’t know whether it was Google who originally did 9 Pie this way, or whether LG tried it. But for me, this is a minus of the system.
- no AR emoticons in the selfie camera. Minus for an amateur, but still.
- There is no DTS-X implementation for speakers. Moreover, the hardware is supported by us, and the mode can even be turned on, however, due to the cut-off audio path, it simply will not work.
-No equalizer as in older models, the same G7. At the same time, if you just install the application from the older device into the system (and add some string into build.prop), it will appear in the settings and work!
-A controversial point, but for me this is a huge minus. Again, I don’t know, maybe it’s because of Android 9 Pie, or LG is to blame, there is no choice to determine the geolocation in an expanded form (GPS + A-GPS + for mobile networks / GPS / For mobile networks). In addition, VERY increased battery consumption by the item "Help search for WiFi networks to improve geolocation". The fad consumes up to 2% of the battery in 8 hours. Someone does not care, but someone cherishes literally every milliampere-hour of the battery.
- degraded HEVC decoder. Cannot normally decode HFR (High Frame Rate) videos - videos with FPS over 60 - 120/240 fps. All your slow-mo recorded in HEVC will appear with overcontrast and hue.
PROS:
- fluent UI
- more CPU/GPU performance
- Newer API, support for newer games, apps, Vulkan API
- newer security patches (last was from december' 2019 at South Korean v300 device firmware)
- better CPU utilizing for idle mode and DOZE mode
In principle, these are the main disadvantages of the drain of LG Android 9 Pie. At least what I remembered now.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I understand... Even I've read countless complains regarding Pie for the v30 ... I too am rooted on stock Oreo and it's been fantastic for me. However... I have a G6 that's on Pie but it's not usable, it's way too slow and being a Verizon phone, it's bootloader is locked... I thought moving to Pie would help with the v30 but I feel that is not the case.
Looks like I'll be sticking to Oreo.
Thanks again. Hope y'all are safe at home

No difference on battery usage itself, but charging is slower.
Oreo, ESPECIALLY if you have a US998.
Using Ting on T-Mobile's network, I upgraded both me and my wife's US998 models to pie after purchasing them about a year ago. I knew going in that Pie doesn't support VOLTE or WIFI Calling for T-Mobile (at least not with the US998 model) but I didn't expect it to be that big of a deal, considering I really don't care much about those features.
Now, keep in mind we don't do a lot of voice calling but the last couple of months we noticed that we had phone calls going straight to voicemail, and noticing some SMS messages took FOREVER to get, however clicking Airplane Mode on and off again would make them appear instantly. I never could figure it out until TING told me it was because the traditional 2G networks were being de-prioritized. Basically, without VOLTE if the towers are busy older tech gets put on the back burner - so calls and some SMS text messages won't go through.
Now with my wife working from home she had constant struggles getting calls to connect, and she was missing a lot of calls and texts from her work. A few days ago I reverted both phones to Oreo and everything is working perfectly.

First of all, rooting is a philosophy. It means you actually own your phone. Like being the "admin" of your own handheld computer. Until you root your phone, the OEM/carrier still has full control. Three years ago, Samsung bricked the new state-of the-art Note 7 phones on purpose (due to the controversial battery issues) with a forced "brick" update -- to force users to trade that phone to get lesser phones like Galaxy S7 (which at that point was over a year old). This proved Samsung really still "owned" and controlled those devices. So, most people had paid hundreds of dollars to basically RENT their phones from Samsung. Still the property of Samsung. But not all Note 7 phones had bad batteries, and many users LOVED their Note 7 phones. The few people who got to KEEP their Note 7 phones were those who had rooted their phones. Samsung couldn't force the BRICK update on them. So, they were the real owners, not Samsung.
In the beginning with Android it was assumed you would want to root your phone. Why would you own a computer you weren't the admin? Android is based on Linux and you can root to add more options, more features, improve performance. Only in the past 3 or 4 years have OEMs/carriers really locked down phones and users are being brainwashed to believe root isn't "necessary". Please. Until you root, it's not really your phone.
Yes, in the future it may be impossible to root as OEM security measures have gotten tighter. But until it becomes impossible, I want to own my own phone.
________
Second, with root you can install not only Magisk mods but also Xposed mods. Xposed framework is installed as a Magisk mod, then you install Xposed mods in that framework. If you're concerned about passing Safety Net for Xposed mods there's a branch called edXposed which hides root like Magisk does for their mods.
Gravity Box is probably the best known Xposed mod, and can be installed with edXposed. It's like a full custom ROM in one module with dozens of features, options. ROM-IN-A-BOX. While it's really designed to work with pure Android, the stock LG GUI is light enough most features work. This article will tell you some about Gravity Box in general. Here's also a YouTube video. You would want the Oreo version, of course.
Main features
- QuickSettings tile management with additional tiles
- Pie Controls
- Expanded desktop with semi-immersive and immersive modes
- Lockscreen tweaks
- Statusbar tweaks
- Navigation bar tweaks
- Power tweaks
- Display tweaks
- Media tweaks
- Phone tweaks

I do not have edXposed installed myself -- I don't care about passing Safety Net -- but I wrote up instructions in the Guide section for installing edXposed several months ago.
See attached Screenshots for the mods I have installed. This is just my choice and you may want others.
_____
Third, with this V30 phone you need root to enable the DTS 3D SURROUND stereo framework which LG delivered with latter Oreo builds. This is also why you need to update to latest Oreo after initial bootloader unlock on early Oreo. The TWRP flashable zips have it already configured, and you just flash Magisk -- or if you flash full image KDZ you can change build prop yourself.

I do not have edXposed installed myself -- I don't care about passing Safety Net -- but I wrote up instructions in the Guide section for installing edXposed several months ago.

Thanks for the heads up... About to root my phone
ChazzMatt said:

See attached Screenshots for the mods I have installed. This is just my choice and you may want others.
_____
Third, with this V30 phone you need root to enable the DTS 3D SURROUND stereo framework LG delivered with latter Oreo.

I am curious about xposed, wasn't edxposed a requirement to get those modules running?
Could you please link the relevant forum where you've written about installing it without edxposed?

edXPosed is only a requirement to have xposed modules running AND pass Safety Net.
"Regular" xposed doesn't pass Safety Net. But I don't care about Safety Net. I carry my wallet with me when I go out, my banking app doesn't rely on Safety Net to let me use it -- it relies on password or fingerprint. I don't play games which require Safety Net. If/when I ever do care about Safety Net I'll go back and install the edxposed version of xposed.
To just install xposed you install the "xposed framework" magisk module. See my screenshots a couple of posts up for Magisk modules. One of them is xposed framework. Then once that is installed and you reboot, you can install whatever xposed modules you want. I installed Oreo Gravity Box and a couple of others. In that post with the screenshots I also gave link to the Oreo Gravity Box.

I understand, looks like I'll be staying on Oreo, and downgrading my old G6 to Oreo as well. It felt much smoother. On Pie it feels terrible

Actually it's a shame because my phone worked so much better with PIE. Battery life was way better and everything just seemed smoother and more reliable. Not that there are really any specific problems with OREO but I did notice my battery life took a hit and the phone is a bit less butter, but really I have no complaints.
Until someone figures out how to port the VOLTE functions to PIE on the US998 (without bricking the phone) my options are pretty limited, and I'm too cheap to buy a new phone when the old one works just fine.
I'm using Pie (JF zip), and it looks like volte and wifi calling are working. These are screenshots from two diff phones, because one phone has a t-mobile sim - which allows wifi calling (no doubt it works, I've used it), and the other phone has a mint mobile sim (using t-mo networks) and it shows the HD icon which I believe indicates using volte? The mint sim doesn't allow wifi calling, they indicate as much on website, the only v30 they allow wifi calling have t-mo imei.
I'm very happy with Pie, works great imo

On 2nd screenshot i see "4G LTE". That's just the LTE icon in U.S. Whereas in U.S., stupidly "4G" icon is really HSPA.
Where is this HD icon you are talking about?

I assume @AsItLies is referring to the green "HD" dial button. That's how I remember it looking when I had my H932 on T-Mo.
I'm right now trying to get VoLTE (HD Voice) working on my US998 with Red Pocket GSMA, after they enabled it on all networks: GSMT (T-Mo), GSMA (AT&T), CDMA (Verizon) and CDMAS (Sprint, select phones only). They used to only have it on GSMT.
https://help.redpocket.com/hc/en-us...-and-can-I-use-it-with-my-Red-Pocket-service-
So far I haven't been able to make it work on US998, but I've only just begun. I have one on Oreo 20h and one on Pie 30b.
Both these phones came with 30b (from YYWireless on eBay) and in my case Pie worked flawlessly on both. I rolled back to Oreo on one of the phones because I had an app that doesn't work on Pie, and probably never will. Pie is undeniably a bit slower, more lagging. Disabling SRTC and LDB/MLT helps a lot, and after also disabling animation it's fine. But no doubt Oreo is faster. OTOH, I have LTE issues on Oreo (phone only reluctantly connects to LTE, prefers HSPA, spends long time searching for network after every boot) whereas on Pie it was perfect (and still is on the other Pie phone). Also, the "Adaptive battery" feature on Pie is brilliant.
I've considered upgrading the Oreo phone back to Pie to see if the LTE problem goes away, or whether it's a persistent modem issue. But I would roll back to Oreo anyway, and right now it is not a high priority in my life.

Question Potential user

Hi Everyone,
I'm in Canada and thinking of picking up the GT 2 Pro (global version) from a local store.
Currently on the Fido network and was wondering:
1. Is anyone having any issues connecting to this carrier? Or any other Canadian carrier?
2. Are there issues updating to Android 13 (comes installed with A12)?
3. Does WiFi connect/disconnect?
4. Should I stay away from this phone and look at something else?
tia
I'm on Freedom, no issues, except no VoLTE available (might be just a carrier thing).
It's cheaper to get Chinese version and flash Global.
Netflix may not work due to Widevine L3 (at least on chinese).
Thanks Quake.
So no issues with dropped calls or wifi cutting in/out?
Are you on A13?
I can get the global version for around $840 CAD

No issues, it's a solid phone. I've had it since summer last year. I'm on A.13 C.12. Check Kimovil.com or other website for full specs on modem bands.
Realme has been pretty good with updates and fixing bugs, they have been releasing updates approx. every month.
Double check current warranty policy. When I bought mine, Realme did not support Canadian/US market.
If you have more cash, you might want to consider Galaxy for better warranty and popularity.

1. I dont know (living in EU)
2. Nope, smooth update, without bugs.
3. Nope, wifi works great (2,4 GHz and 5GHz on WiFi6, WiFi 5 and 4 also OK) for long distances (better than any other phone I've had).
4. This phone is a good deal if you buy it at a reasonable price ($840 CAD is OK) - good cooling system (SD8 gen 1 is disaster in many phones), 3 mayor Android updates, fast charging, SOT 8-9 hours, nice OS (easy to clean), nice display.
Some may be disappointed by the lack of wireless charging and no IPxx (rain and moisture are no problem).
Thank you guys for the feedback.
It's weird that some people are having issues with this phone (i.e. battery drain, wifi/carrier connections, etc). I guess it depends on the ROM????

That's the only explanation I have. I've been using the European rom since day one, and 0 problems (A12, A13, all OK...).
My experience: Mobile data, Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC are fine, no problems. The battery could last more SOT 6,5 hours during two days of use.
I switched from HTC U12+ and I am satisfied.I only changed the launcher, but that's just a matter of taste.

Maybe competitors testing the phone
Some of the issues I have encountered:
1. Low volume on USB-C to 3.5mm adapter -> workaround is to set automatic run of a shell command via Tasker to adjust gain (needs root)
2. Stock camera app isn't color-accurate -> fixed with GCam
3. Some of preloaded Oppo/Realme apps can be annoying -> remove via adb or root app manager
4. Google assistant's read/reply to message while driving function is broken for me - not sure if this is Realme-specific or a common issue. GA will read message, but stop listening for reply.
5. No official free recovery flash tool available. Current EDL flash tool is one-time token based, so you need to pay someone (like $5) to unlock it, in case of a brick.

- Don't expect 8-9 hours SOT, some users claim to get that but most user can't get near this....5-6 maximum is what you should expect from it.
- stock camera sucks, specially for videos, if you not into using gcam and other apps for photos and videos specially if you use the front camera think twice. If you ok using gcam and, mcpro24fps for example you can get good results.
- screen doesn't seem to match the specs advertised, brightness doesn't seem the advertised and touch sampling rate is advertised at 1000hz but it only reach 125hz.
- if you want to play with flashing the device there is no oficial free tool to flash it in case something goes wrong, so in case you get a brick you gonna have to pay a ramdom stranger to access you PC via TeamViewer and flash it for you, and you gonna pay for it.
- don't expect any custom rom for this device.
- snap 8gen1 is power hungry and likes to throttle, but that's not a Realme only problem...
Those are the problems I can remember right now.
