New Phone Recommendations? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently a Verizon customer and am still using my old Galaxy SIII.
Several years back, I allowed the phone to install an update which essentially locked down the phone. Something like Knox if I recall correctly. It made it so that I was unable to install custom recovery, such as TWRP which I had used for years. As a result, I stopped paying attention to the android development forums and such... so I'm a rather out of the loop now.
Anyway, I'm looking to finally upgrade my phone and am looking for some guidance / recommendations. Are the newer Galaxy phones still locked down or are you able to install custom roms / recoveries? If so, are there brands other than Samsung that are more popular as far as being able to install custom roms / recoveries? I'm interested in the Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay features that came out a few years ago (are these features still useful?)
Additionally, I am still on the grandfathered unlimited data plan, which I would want to preserve in the process of upgrading.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Mostly I want a somewhat new-ish phone that will be customizable (ie unlocked bootloader) through Verizon here in the US.

As explained by xanthrax, there already is an established thread for phone recommendations. For reducing unnecessary clutter, I need to ask you to continue your discussion over there.

getting sn s3 in a few weeks...a couple ?'s

i have been using the droid x2 for about two years. it has a locked bootloader, and very limited abilities as far as flashing roms goes. kernels will be a new thing to me. i have noticed that in most rom install instructions, there are no specifications on what version to be on. lol not something i am used to.
could someone point me in the right direction for some reading material on the subject? this phone specifically? i understand a fair amount about being rooted and performing various things within recovery and android in general. i just want to make sure that before i go messing around with my s3, i know exactly what im doing. thanks in advance.
also, i have read a decent amount already, and it seems like this phone is fairly easy to brick,? also not something i am used to. the droid x2 with its locked bootloader was next to impossible to brick.
cant wait to join the ranks.! thanks again.
read as many threads in General as you can

Good choice, mate!
Which S3 is it? I see you're in the USofA. There are several variants of S3 in the world. American/Canadian S3's are the Snapdragon variant, not the International variety, which is what this forum is for. If it is not the GT-I9300, anything you flash from here will definitely brick your phone.

thank you sir. ! i guess i would be getting the non international version. :highfive:
international version has many developers than the other variants. once you start flashing custom roms or kernels or mods, there is no guarantee that your phone will not brick. flashing without damage to the phone depends on how you do that. goodluck.

Yeah Make sure you're in the right forum for your phone. Follow that chart for your carrier.
Also if you happen to be getting T-Mobile,there is a new variant that has the LTE radio T999L which is a hardware difference and not a simple software upgrade. So if you did happen to get T-Mobile, hopefully you have the LTE variant.

[Q] Looking for Coolpad Quattro II 4G root

hi XDA members, I'm looking for any available root (if there is any) for my Coolpad Quattro II (801EM) 4G phone. I've looked almost everywhere and decided to drop here and ask if there will be one in the near future. the phone is pretty nice for a mid range phone but since I've always used rooted/ Jailbreaked phones, I didn't want to make the exception with this one.
is there any info I need to give on the phone or something that the devs need?
also thanks in advance.

Im about to buy GS5 ??????

Hi I am about to buy the Tmobile gs5. About 2 months ago I bough a ATT GS4 and im pretty upset because of the locked bootloader .. There is no work around for it so you cant flash custom kernels or aosp roms ... Only roms based off stock ...........I guess im really wanting to know the draw backs if any ? when it comes to custom roms , kernels or recoveries ..Or is it a free for all when it comes to this ? Thanks any help would be much appreciated
Update: I had 20 minutes to decide on a phone and chose GS5 over G3 ..If you check the G3 development thread youll see why .
Your use of question marks is disconcerting.
Please use the search function next time. There are so many threads asking the same question. Just to make it faster, yes, the bootloader is unlocked and you can flash anything on it.
to follow up what aooga said, yes the bootloader is unlocked
however AOSP and other versions of non TW roms don't have a few features unlocked yet. I'll be happy when we get a working version of Cyanogenmod running...

Im sorry I made you feel uneasy ... Sounds like a personal issue Junior.?? You must get confused easily or maybe your just to busy wacking it to SIMS..
And thanks for commenting on my question marks instead of actually answering the question.

Thanks .. I wasn't even planning on getting a phone today and had the choice of a brand new GS5 or G3 and had about 20 minutes to figure it out and a crappy internet connection and asking a question once and checking back was my best option over google ..Got the s5.. There is basically no development for the G3

No root at the end of the tunnel

I was just wondering why all the other phones have roots except for the Galaxies?
Some say it is because the providers are locking the bootloader. The question is; are those providers locking the Galaxy bootloader only?
Does anyone think this will make people move from Galaxy to other [rootable] models?
Honestly, this is the first Samsung phone in where I don't think you need root. They allow themes, it's awesome on battery, runs really smoothly, and offers a ton of features that work well. The only reason I ever modded my phone was to increase the longevity and add to it's features... something I haven't really needed on this phone. So I doubt it. I hope they come out with Oreo soon...

Just FYI but if you did a search here on XDA you'd discover that the Snapdragon S8 has had root for a few months now. It's doubtful that we'll see an unlocked bootloader though. Search is your friend!

Thanks for the input. I saw the root, however, I'm debating whether to root or not. The version listed there is older than what we have. And, like Mr. eatmeimadanish mentioned I haven't had a need for rooting so far. It's just I miss the nice ROMs that different people were putting up with so many more tweaks and stuff. And, there are some applications that work on rooted phones, which I'm unable to use anymore.

I haven't rooted either. I'm happy with my S8+ as is. Besides, I use Samsung Pay all the time. Also, without an unlocked bootloader there won't be any custom roms.

1) S8 Snapdragon root . It looks like it's been cleaned up quite a bit since the last time I saw it. Keep in mind, it's not the easy process that we used to have, so read, read and then read again. I personally have not done it as I'm happy with my S8+ as is.
2) Correct, no unlocked bootloader = No custom ROMs.
3) No, the S5 bootloader was unlocked, which is why we had some great Roms. I miss MOAR, but life changes, I've moved on.
Off the topic but, I remember u Ramer from the S5 MOAR thread. I had that rom on my s5 also. I love my s8+ as well.

I saw the rooting thread, and even downloaded the files. But I'm hesitating if I should root or not. The thread is closed, which means it's not keeping up with the updates. Although, we all say we're happy with the phone as is. But, are we really?

Which phone is best

So I had sprint for years. Had the note 4 until 3 years ago when I switched to the note 9 /U and couldn't root it... very terrible.
So jot tmibile bought sprint and I don't like tmobile. So I'm switching to AT&T which i also don't like but I can add GSM phones so thats my path.
My question is which of the latest Samsung note phones is best for rooting meaning which model number should I buy from Amazon or ebay that can be both rooted and unlocked bootloader?
I was going to do the fold 3 but apparently samsung kills the camera. . Shame...
Rooting isn't necessary or even desirable.
The 10+ running on Pie* is a strong running, very stable phone once optimized.
Next best choice is the 20U.
The Fold3 and S21U are duds with no SD card slot, no spen and/or numerous hardware issues**.
If the 10+ or 20U aren't to your liking wait until next year for the new Note release.
*last good Android OS and with no scope storage, fully supports trusted overlay apks.
**Fold3 hardware issues... wait they're coming
Ok. So I definitely want root and customs roms which means unlocked bootloader.. thank you for the vote of confidence with stock phones but my question was clear and opinion is not an answer to the question. Again, which phone model is best, meaning specific model number, for rooting and roming. I know there are 2 chinees versions of the note 10 and note 20 as well as a few others from other countries meaning non "U" versions, Which is best? Some people just fail to read and answer properly. I wonder wtf is wrong with people... i didnt ask for opinion on non-rootable or otherwise non unlock able bootloaders and clearly was asking for non "U" version yet some daft schmuck says get the U version... duhhh...

Meh, it's a lick on you... do it your way.
Do your homework and go to the appropriate forum for each phone and see what users are able to do. Brain picking is just laziness...
Edit: I could help you but I choose not to... I got a better idea

Well I wouldn't call it laziness... I might instead, call it a request from experience. Some may say well... this model has an unlock able bootloader but only some do while others don't. And maybe this model does have unlocked bootloader but doesn't have many options, while this other model is unlockable usually at&t doesn't accept it. And so on. How did you achieve senior member? Must be by trolling reasonable members... thanks but please shut up on my thread. Go elsewhere and post. Thanks again.
You can unlock the bootloader now on any 9 series us device upto fold 2 s21 provided they on the right bootloader version. Its a paid service but is possible. Root is going strong
