No root at the end of the tunnel - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I was just wondering why all the other phones have roots except for the Galaxies?
Some say it is because the providers are locking the bootloader. The question is; are those providers locking the Galaxy bootloader only?
Does anyone think this will make people move from Galaxy to other [rootable] models?

Honestly, this is the first Samsung phone in where I don't think you need root. They allow themes, it's awesome on battery, runs really smoothly, and offers a ton of features that work well. The only reason I ever modded my phone was to increase the longevity and add to it's features... something I haven't really needed on this phone. So I doubt it. I hope they come out with Oreo soon...

Just FYI but if you did a search here on XDA you'd discover that the Snapdragon S8 has had root for a few months now. It's doubtful that we'll see an unlocked bootloader though. Search is your friend!

Thanks for the input. I saw the root, however, I'm debating whether to root or not. The version listed there is older than what we have. And, like Mr. eatmeimadanish mentioned I haven't had a need for rooting so far. It's just I miss the nice ROMs that different people were putting up with so many more tweaks and stuff. And, there are some applications that work on rooted phones, which I'm unable to use anymore.

I haven't rooted either. I'm happy with my S8+ as is. Besides, I use Samsung Pay all the time. Also, without an unlocked bootloader there won't be any custom roms.

I did do a search, but couldn't find something specific to Rooting...
But also....this will be an unlocked bootloader so no custom Roms
Was the Galaxy S5 the same? Cant remember if it had an unlocked BL

1) S8 Snapdragon root . It looks like it's been cleaned up quite a bit since the last time I saw it. Keep in mind, it's not the easy process that we used to have, so read, read and then read again. I personally have not done it as I'm happy with my S8+ as is.
2) Correct, no unlocked bootloader = No custom ROMs.
3) No, the S5 bootloader was unlocked, which is why we had some great Roms. I miss MOAR, but life changes, I've moved on.

Off the topic but, I remember u Ramer from the S5 MOAR thread. I had that rom on my s5 also. I love my s8+ as well.

I saw the rooting thread, and even downloaded the files. But I'm hesitating if I should root or not. The thread is closed, which means it's not keeping up with the updates. Although, we all say we're happy with the phone as is. But, are we really?

Im about to buy GS5 ??????

Hi I am about to buy the Tmobile gs5. About 2 months ago I bough a ATT GS4 and im pretty upset because of the locked bootloader .. There is no work around for it so you cant flash custom kernels or aosp roms ... Only roms based off stock ...........I guess im really wanting to know the draw backs if any ? when it comes to custom roms , kernels or recoveries ..Or is it a free for all when it comes to this ? Thanks any help would be much appreciated
Update: I had 20 minutes to decide on a phone and chose GS5 over G3 ..If you check the G3 development thread youll see why .
Your use of question marks is disconcerting.
Please use the search function next time. There are so many threads asking the same question. Just to make it faster, yes, the bootloader is unlocked and you can flash anything on it.
to follow up what aooga said, yes the bootloader is unlocked
however AOSP and other versions of non TW roms don't have a few features unlocked yet. I'll be happy when we get a working version of Cyanogenmod running...

Im sorry I made you feel uneasy ... Sounds like a personal issue Junior.?? You must get confused easily or maybe your just to busy wacking it to SIMS..
And thanks for commenting on my question marks instead of actually answering the question.

Thanks .. I wasn't even planning on getting a phone today and had the choice of a brand new GS5 or G3 and had about 20 minutes to figure it out and a crappy internet connection and asking a question once and checking back was my best option over google ..Got the s5.. There is basically no development for the G3

We need root

because emails are not shown in total - when can we hope to see the root ?
Is that achievable with Tizen on Verizon?

IIRC it was achieved with the gear 1 & 2.. Not a whole lot of options but hopefully achievable with the S. Check those forums for more info

Yes root is possible but you can't shange much on Tizen the email issue you would have to root your phone to the latest email. not GS it pulls from your phone. Root for GS will give us little things like custom ringtones some color fonts ect. But yes root has been done on Gear 2 and gear 1 (android)
And some peoples emails are fine it depends on your carrier
This will be my favorite thread. Lol
I'm sure we will get it. May take a little time. But don't think it will be far off from Gear 2.

Gear S Stock Firmwares Make Rooting Fun ...
So, the stock firmwares are available for the SM-R750/R750B(Brazil)/R750D(DoCoMo/Japan)/R750J (KDD/Japan)/R750T (T-Mobile USA)/R750W (Canada/Peru/other randoms).
I don't see anything from AT&T though (SM-R750A) which is what I have. I'm not going to be able to do anything to it, like trying for Root, until stock firmware is available ... Has anyone with one of the above models been working on making any progress?
I'm downloading the T-Mobile firmware to bust it open and see what's in there.

I downloaded T-Mobile (SM-R750T) from Samsung Updates. Not sure I am allowed to link to it but they have all of the ones available except AT&T (SM-R750A) which I just don't understand! Anyway I haven't had a lot of time to pick apart the .img files because I had to get my VMWare up and running so I could install Yaffers blah blah blah.
No stock firmware from Verizon?
Oh yeah!!! I'm sorry I forgot. No stock for Verizon or Sprint either. T-Mobile only. So ... Until that happens ... Be careful!!!

Ask for it from Sammobile.com. That's how I got AT&T's.
I don't think root is going to happen for this device at least not from XDA users. People are just into watch faces right now which is fine but no one is modding.

Agreed. I wonder if flashing a custom rom on an international to unlock the VZW bands, if possible, then using a dummy imei to swap it with a vzw imei would work.

Yeah idk
If gaining root were as easy as changing apn settings, the bootloader would b unlocked probably. The issue is partly HARDWARE related. Different carriers ship their devices with slightly different components on the board. That's why when u take the battery out, u see carrier branded stickers and printing. And, the key needed to unlock the bootloader is encrypted in a way that attempting to crack it will result in the device not even booting due to the fact that certain security checks are performed in an order that depends on the previous checks in the boot sequence to be valid before moving on to the next check. So...If you're not already rooted...pray. That's all u can do.
The phone is far from a flagship device. I think the expectation is that most people are moving on to newer devices this year. Personally, I'm not liking the trend of single body phones with "premium materials" very much so I'll wait to see what else is it there.
Such a shame that VZ took this direction with their business instead of embracing the dev community.

What?
Finding a root exploit to a locked down device is not the same as a road trip to New Jersey! You cannot ask "Are we there yet!"
Everyone knows at exactly the same time..when it is discovered, tested and released.
There's a new version of towel root. In the Verizon general thread if anyone wants to try i just seen it.

Follow the root guide in the general section
I wonder if these mdk s4's are still worth anything?
Hmm.. On swappa maybe $10-20 more than a regular s4.
Can't even find any on ebay. Guess this phone has truly reach EOL.
How do they even get away with this without class action LS.. probably because too may people like me buying before they take the time to work out that they're selling gizmos loaded with bloatware, boobytrapped to keep it that way.

You *can* root the s4 i454 on lollipop. Use kingroot.apk and switch to SuperSU. Google that... It takes a few steps (on the switch)

New Phone Recommendations?

I am currently a Verizon customer and am still using my old Galaxy SIII.
Several years back, I allowed the phone to install an update which essentially locked down the phone. Something like Knox if I recall correctly. It made it so that I was unable to install custom recovery, such as TWRP which I had used for years. As a result, I stopped paying attention to the android development forums and such... so I'm a rather out of the loop now.
Anyway, I'm looking to finally upgrade my phone and am looking for some guidance / recommendations. Are the newer Galaxy phones still locked down or are you able to install custom roms / recoveries? If so, are there brands other than Samsung that are more popular as far as being able to install custom roms / recoveries? I'm interested in the Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay features that came out a few years ago (are these features still useful?)
Additionally, I am still on the grandfathered unlimited data plan, which I would want to preserve in the process of upgrading.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

SCV39 root (snapdragon)

anyone using this device found a way to root this on android pie?
or a custom rom maybe?
The stock firmware really sucks (full of carrier apps, no bixby voice)
it would really be nice flashing a custom rom for this device so it wouldn't feel like a mid-range samsung phone. LOL

Only a few models are, if your isn't one of them about the only news is don't expect one anytime soon (after you read the quoted portion on another thread asking about rooting I posted in another thread asking about rooting).
Currently no matter how many times it is asked the answer has been the same (so asking is rather pointless). Unfortunately one shouldn't expect that to change as it stands...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79378707&postcount=2
**Side note there should be a sticky/pinned thread at the top of the Q&A topic repeating the answer. Can be a small FAQ thread or something/anything. Figure would help new members for using better thread titles, the search feature of the board (and how to use it in a quick tutorial if necessary), when asking for help some pointers on how to explain the issue/problem and what kind of details they should give (but fail either by mistake, impatience or being unaware).
I also use this device. I have unlocked the bootloader, but until now can't find a way to root. Desperately want to, as too many bloatware in it
