It's only so-so. At times, I still struggle to listen when I use the speakerphone function.

Well, it's loud and clear although at full volume there's distortion.
Coming from a moto x play whose speaker provided dull sound and wasn't even loud. This has got a very clear and crisp sound that's loud enough. It's great.
All in all. It's satisfactory for me.

Not that great. I am migrating from the Vibe X3. The latter being a COMPLETE phone except with Lenovo refusing to send a VOLTE update. Rants aside, the speakerphone on the honor is not bad but neither is it great.

I hope honor can mimic the quality of the Axon 7.

Pretty loud.

IMHO, the speakers are strictly average on loudness and clarity.......with V4A, I am able to squeeze out a little more out of them but at even mid volumes there are crackles. The sound (especially treble) sounds cheap and muffled. My evaluation is primarily by comparing this with my previous phone (Gionee M2) on which the sound was a lot punchier and fuller. Compare this with my wife's Lenovo Vibe P1 that overpowers anything else emitting sound in the house, it sounds like a whining wimp! hahaha! Wish it was possible to buy a spare and replace the speaker in H5X with the one on P1
Could be little bit loud.
The speakerphone isnt loud enough. Simple as that. I was going to get this phone for my dad, I had him test it out. He said he couldnt get the phone because the speakerphone isnt loud enough. I love this phone to the point of brainwash, but I had to accept his answer. What a shame.
During my months of usage, I would say that this phone's bottom facing speaker is very loud, to the point that if you are listening to different types of genres of music, it can be a little distorted when on the max volume to the point that it sounds very unpleasant to listen to, or like it is "crackling" sort of. But of course, in the stock music player app that comes loaded on the phone's EMUI, there is a equalizer option that you can turn on to adjust the bass and such other options to meet your sound quality that you are looking for.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Here at honor, we love getting comments from our customers. We'll definitely forward your feedback about the Honor 5X's bottom speaker being a little distorted to our development team as we're always looking to improve our products. (ED)
its muddy at high volumes, tweaking some conrrols using poweramp helps a lil bit.
Not great
There is a notable distortion at high volumes
The speaker position was a bad design. I wish it was facing front.0
For vocals, the speaker gets the job done but for music, hell no! Its speaker produces slightly high pitched sound making it super bad for music. On full volume, there is slight 'sound-tearing' effect.

Early looks at the hardware show a bottom firing speaker next to the charging port.
Like he said above. Speaker is on the bottom. The speaker clairty is good with he calling. Tested it on my family earlier. Played some music at full blast and the sound wasn't great but you could hear it from the other room. I'd say probably a 7/10 but honestly I haven't had a phone that I'd rate over an 8/10 yet. Definitely in particular with a pixel or s8
Louder than my HTC 10, and moto z force. Pulled out the Droid Turbo louder than it as well.
On par with my s7 edge, if not just barely louder.
Definitely louder than my Turbo 2. I can hear it in another room as well.

It gets loud but the during last 3 ticks of the volume, sound quality takes a dive and gets pretty harsh
i'm considering this phone but i'm concerned about the speaker volume clarity.
I'm currently using iphone 8 plus and really impressed by the speakers sound, best i've heard for clarity and loudness.
I was alos impressed with htc u11 speakers, if it's as good as that them i'm sold.
I forgot to update this. They fixed the harshness of the speaker . It's totally fine now. The volume stepping has also improved.

Don't know if I'm late to the party but I find the loud speaker very good actually. I'll preface that by saying I don't listen to music on speaker, I have headphones of Bluetooth speakers for that. Call audio is very crisp and gets very loud. I'm very impressed by it. I think your usage/expectation will dictate how satisfied you are. My phone isn't my boombox so I think the speaker is great.

Oh yeah definitely. I mainly use my speakers for YouTube and the speaker is more than suitable for that.
Have had this phone for a few weeks and it is by far the loudest and most clear loudspeaker I've had on any phone. From htc, lg, samsung, zte, Moto. this is my favorite phone ever.

I will rate the speakerphone only 3* because this device could have easily had stereo speakers for its size and bezels and it doesn't.
My Mi A1 bottom speaker has a hissing sound when producing sound at the lowest volume when you are in a quite room. Anyone has this?
You have to place the your ear to the speaker at the lowest volume when playing sound to reproduce the issue.
It's like a problem it cannot produce low volume.

I'm rating 3* because of the hissing/static noise on lower volumes

Just noticed this and yes, I have it too and I suspect this issue to be present on all of the other devices.
As much as I like and love the sound of the Mi A1, this issue is there with the bottom speaker. although I hardly use the speaker on low volumes, I use headphones for that purpose, had no issue so far with them on Mi A1. well looks like Xiaomi's side effect for boosting the sound on the bottom speakers too much. I am sure that this is a software issue and need minor tinkering, I just hope they don't mess up the great loud output just because this little annoying problem. Can they? Will they?

Simple choice in sound options "loud output vs quality in low volume" would be OK with me, I use low volume most of the time.
And yes, the hissing (both speaker and headphones) do exist and it is a problem.
Sound and volume OK.
Location is somewhat unhandy...
hand frequently covers the speaker completely when holding the phone in landscape.
yeah, is true the speaker have hissing sound at very low volume!
at normal/high volume sound is nice and no hissing sound, or at least, not audible.
Anyway i never use the speaker so low so for me the quality is very good.
about hissing sound using headphones. i have 2 headphones, cip one, from others old phones and no hissing sound even at lowest volume.
about this hissing sound, is a new bug from oreo? or was also in naugat? is a software issue or a hardware issue? will be fixed?
I think Mi A1 sound a little bit horrible compare to RN4x... RN4x has better sound wih viper4android. I've setting viper4android on Mi A1 but not find best sound with viper4android. Mi A1 crisp sound to high compare to RN4x.

After January's security pack update, the upper speaker is kinda "vibrating" when the volume is set up to maximum. How to fix this?

Had the same buzzing before and after update on upper speaker on full volume some times... Just leanrned to live with it.
And the maximum sound of this phone is one of its weakpoints.

Reboot. It'll fix it for a while.
I think something is happening when you connect a bluetooth device which messes up the volume settings.
Not in mine...

Considering LG V40 over 3a just coz of poor quality of sound... I remember, I never heard my Nexus 5 ringing from my pocket or the next room... is 3a sound that low and bad?

I think they're quite amazing. I'm coming from a Pixel 2 XL and these are significantly louder and more clear. There is also WAY less distortion and rattle at full volume. Bass is punchy for its size, and the rest of the frequency range sounds pretty balanced. Also note that I'm coming from the Pixel 2 XL, to the smaller pixel 4 and it's performing way better. Even though both speakers aren't front facing anymore it still sounds better.
Here to confirm it is stereo earpiece and bottom firing speakers together. Reviews did not mention if the earpiece acted as a speaker, and I was worried it would be stereo bottom firing only, a-la pixel 1. Fortunately that is not the case!

In my case what noticed is that I can hear voices much more clearly vs Pixel 2
So maybe they tuned them to sound better on the High frequency.
Let's face it... nobody should use a phone as a speaker regularly.
Now to watch series or YouTube video is really important the audio. And I'm enjoying much more the YouTube videos now because I can hear them without raising a lot the volume

Coming from a 7 Pro the earpiece speaker is considerably louder. I think the "Dolby" tuning by Oneplus might give a little better spatial separation but I am very pleased with the audio quality of my P4.
Came from an LG G7, which was touted for its speaker's loudness and fidelity. I can say, without a doubt, that this sounds much better. It sounds warmer, fuller, and can get louder without distorting or sounding overly sharp. Pleasantly surprised, to be quite honest.
First time I've heard the Pixel 4 speakers was impressed how good they sound: full, bassy, quality.

I agree fully with this. I too came from a Pixel 2 XL and while I was initially bracing for a downgrade in speaker performance, due to lack of dual front firing speakers and speaker size, I was completely blown away by the audio performance of the Pixel 4. It is an improvement in every way possible from my 2 XL. Where it shines the most for me is clarity at high volumes. My 2 XL would break up pretty badly at above 70% volume and sound pretty trashy but my Pixel 4 can keep it's sound integrity pretty held together even up at volumes in excess of 90%. All in all, I love this phone.
