Cellular strength and throughput - Essential Phone Real Life Review

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Essential Phone's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.

Its working on Verizon pretty good so far. I'll check back in a few days

Not so good...
I get no cell coverage in my basement with this phone. Typically have 2 bars on my S8+. Sending a 4 word text message is hit or miss on delivery.
Update: Data reception is terrible on my device w/ Verizon. Cell and text service is poor as well.
Info:
-102 dB
43% cell signal strength
Speed Test on mobile:
624 ms ping
. 42 Mbs download
. 5 Mbs upload

On Verizon, better signal than my HTC 10 I switched from. Better signal than my wifes moto z force.
HD voice, VOLTE, verified HD voice and data worked simultaneously. No Wi-Fi calling on Verizon yet.

T-Mobile VoLTE and Wifi calling working here

Remember, bars are arbitrary. Try comparing dB level.

What network settings do you have it set on people are telling me calls sound like I'm in a tunnel. Hope it's not the mic.

MetroPCS/Tmobile WIFI calling works magically. I never knew how muffled I sound when I was using my 6p. This is lightyears better.

Speed test results for me (verizon):
Check out my @speedtest result! How fast is your internet? http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/3181545050

Sprint is strong as ever. My 6P was really good and a U11 isn't bad, but this thing takes them both in signal strength, call quality, and this phone supports LTE+ which is just over double the LTE speed I was getting without the +.
Normal LTE speed at my place was around 3-4Mbit. With LTE+ its 10+. Can't complain.
Well I can a little. Tried to use the U11's Sim Card since the 6P's sim card isn't compatible they say, and well that has just led to a day of broken activation. I started out with working phone but not data, then after a reboot the phone tries hands free activation that never finishes. I reboot again and it skips that, update profile, and data works but not phone/sms. And no manner of reboot/activation/profile trickery seems to fix it.
So I am just going to see if I can pick up or get a Sim shipped tomorrow to get everything dialed in tomorrow.
Still, Data is sure fast when it's working.

What general location are you in?
Metro area?
Suburb?
Country?
I travel to all these places very frequently and will need coverage. My Nexus 6 and 6P work well in all areas. with good speeds and want this phone to work at least just as well.

In a fringe rural area of western Ohio and Galaxy S7 has better Verizon reception than my new PH-1. This is my lake house and is an issue. I had consistent weak coverage in my house with S7, and PH-1 is constantly going in and out as I walk through the house. Wifi calling not working with Verizon... At least not yet or I cannot figure out how to activate it. When I try and make calls, I get a message saying to activate wifi calling in order to make a call.

What it does for me at home... Switching back and forth with crappy service and no service lol

For my first day and half of having this phone, cellular strength on Sprint has been terrible.
I came from my Nexus 6, with it at home I normally got full signal bars, with the Essential I'm only getting 1 bar (-121 dBm 99 asu) and it sometimes jumps down to 0.
Speed test at home I'm getting an average of a 68ms ping, 5.24Mbps down, and 2.20Mbps up. With the Nexus 6 I was getting around 10Mbps down.
Inside at work usually I got terrible service with the Nexus 6 staying at 1 bar 3G all the time, with the Essential it can't even connect inside the building.

Even after the recent update my MintSim Tmo still doesn't work well. My Xfinity Verizon works the same now or less. I did notice that whenever I put back the Tmo sim into my S8 I would get a update to install the configuration but I never get that when I use the same sim in the Essential phone. Not sure if that's the issue but i believe it's just APN settings which I copied from their site anyways.

Can't make a phone call. Signal completely goes off as if I put it in the airplane mode. Few seconds after I push end call button/hang up the signal comes back fully. Yesterday was working fine. I'm in Sprint (Chicago)

Here's what I got today near downtown San Jose, CA

So far...My PH-1 is a dog on Verizon. Places where I get low-bar-but-usable coverage with my other phones (Nexus 6, Droid Turbo), I have mostly unusable coverage with the PH-1 (occasionally connects, but often no bars).
I like the phone in theory, but if this doesn't get better, it's going back in the box.

Slow LTE speeds

I have been getting really slow data speeds in the Los Angeles area. I used to have the Galaxy S2 (i777) and it had decent speeds (usually 2-3 Mbps and sometimes up to almost 11). When I upgraded to this phone, I was hoping to get around 5 or 6 Mbps but I get this instead.

It's so slow I can't even load webpages sometimes.
What phones did you come from and what has your experience been with data speeds? What city do you live in? Have you played around with the APN settings to increase speeds?

Are you on an unlimited plan? Maybe you have been throttled. If not then something is wrong,I got 21 down on lte in Detroit.

I am on the 2gb data plan and it says I have 1.9 left. I rarely use At&t data since I am connected to WiFi 80-90% of the time.
Speeds are faster early in the morning or later in the day around afternoon and also night time. It's just really slow during the day. I guess the network is just congested but it was never this bad when I was on my old phone.
Make sure you are connected to the closest server in the server list, sometimes it messes up and gives you one thousands of miles away, which result in low speeds.

Thanks. I've selected the same server that I used with my old phone (Los Angeles Dream Host).
How do your data speeds compare with your old phones? a) increase, b) decrease, c) stay about the same?
And was your old phone LTE or HSPA+?

All lte at my house except one 3g test as you can obviously see.
I think you may want to check apn or call att. That might resolve your issue
I had to do that twice in one year due to some technical beef my phone did not register with their servers after resetting.
Portland oregon
around most of Dallas I get 12-20Meg ... in some places 30-40Meg+
the only time I got terrible speed was when I tried using the LTE toggle. but that was easily fixed.
I hate you guys, such fast speeds.
I shot AT&T an email and this was their response.... not sure if it is true or if it is just the normal reply they give when people ask about data speeds.
"Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. I will be
more than happy to assist you with your inquiry regarding your data
speeds today.
I'm sorry to hear of your data speed issues on the new LTE network, and
am glad to look into that for you. I do see several tower issues being
worked on in your area, which started a couple of weeks ago. They are
planned to be resolved by 12/30/2012. There are also planned upgrades to
the existing towers there too. I have now sent in a network quality
report to our engineers to make them aware of the impacts this is
having. They do use these reports in network planning also.
If you have any additional questions about this issue, please respond to
this email. Thank you for choosing AT&T; we appreciate your business."
Ask them if your data plan is compatible. The Bestbuy website, when I ordered, said that I must upgrade from my 2GB 4G data plan to the 3GB LTE data plan. There was no getting around it. Maybe you have to have the 3GB data plan to use LTE. Although it does look like your connected just fine.

Is your 3G signal as stable as your previous phone?

Hello Members
I'm on the '3' network (uk), and I'm sure the 3G signal while using my new XZU is not as stable.
The signal keeps jumping from 3G to H to H+, which my previous phone didn't do at my home address.
Is it possible that the Sony XZU needs more firmware updates, or is the phone just suffering signal strength issues?
Regards

Hello BASKOU, it's my 3G signal. I find I'll have reasonable high signal bars on the XZU but the mobile 3G icon will constantly change from 3G to H to H+, and this action seems to interrupt the speed/flow of how Web pages load, or how the 'Play store works'.
The only thing I find it's not 100% consistently doing this problem, depending on where I am, or the time of day, but what I do find is it will generally always start with a 3G symbol if I'm not using the Internet first off on the phone, then the arrows will flash and the icon will move on to H the H+.
It's as if 3' network is monitoring what process you doing at the time your using the network, and controlling the mode of speed that is required (a 3G speed, or a H+ speed), I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the LTE roll out on 3's network?

Ok so try to lock on WCDMA and see if you still have this problem. It happen to me at my home (have an antenna just up to me so it mess with the network). But when I am in town or normal covered area it never switch all the time like you.
The network do not tell your phone which network he should use. It is your phone that choice which network it should use. And corresponding to the speed it say if you are on 3g/H/H+. So normally it is because 3G signal is not stable that your phone do that. As my XZU have a better signal than my htc sensation and the note 2, I guess it might come from the network.

The phone swith to 3g to conserve battery life, when you start using Internet , it switch to fastest network available, that's the delay that you experience, i think that normal for all phones.
So far, the signal is better compare to my iphone 5 in weak signal area.

Thanks BASKOU, I'll lock to WCDMA only tonight, while I'm my home address signal area which seems to suffer this problem the most at the moment.
Thanks ijat91 also for that, I also had the Note2 (GT-N7105) previously, but I never noticed, or picked up on the phone displaying the 3G icon first off before going to H+, it tended to always be showing H+ and this was at my home address.
But at you've stated bASKOU, I think the phones hunting for the strongest signal, now you've mentioned this, I've heard other friends and people I know have suffered issues like this on there different makes, and model phones, using there mobile networks.
I'll report back if making this change in the settings improves things.
Regards
Well, I did the settings change as suggested to 'WCDMA only', the result was no improvement in fact the Internet symbol on the phone just stayed on 3G, and the signal bars would just flip between 2 & 4 and then none, thanks anyway.
I'm almost sure it's not a physical fault with the phone, as yesterday I was virtually on H+ signal while in an area of London call Kilburn, so I don't think there's a problem there.
It might possibly be related to the phone firmware, in that in some way it's not handling a weaker H+ signals and locking onto them, but choosing to alway find the strongest connection, when all the variation of the broadband network are available, but none are strong and all are equally weak in the area.
Anyway, I'll have to live with it for now and see if the LTE service from the 3 network improves things in the future.
Thanks again everyone

Honest opinion on T-Mobile service

I have a $70 unlimited prepaid sim from T-Mobile The service is good. I've only used my unlocked iPhone 5S with T-Mobile. LTE reception always seems 2-3 bars. Much weaker than AT&T's, and slower (in my area). I am wondering how those of you with the S5 rate their service. I'm assuming the Galaxy phones work better than the iPhone. I do not travel so T-Mobile may be an option for me coming from AT&T.
1. How is WiFi calling on the S5? I read it was bad on the Note 3 initially. Does this work over every WiFi network?
2. Due to the high frequencies, do you T-Mobile users find your service cutting out? Is HSPA+ improved?
Really depends on where you are.
It works great where I am as far as signal is concerned.
I don't have any problems with speed and get around 20+mbps when on LTE
And wifi calling works well on this phone.
As said above it does depend a lot on where you are. Generally speaking in major urban areas T-Mobile has very fast LTE but their data coverage gets spotty in rural areas. Road tripping is always a problem but my girlfriend with At&t would always have at least a 3G connection.

That doesn't look too bad.
I would say find the adresses of where you will be mostly and zoom in street level though to get more detailed to make sure.
It is hard to get enough granularity with a far out zoom like that.

Anyone else? T-Mobile's HSPA network is definitely more reliable than their LTE network. A few times the HSPA signal switched to E.

What I found in the past 2 weeks I was using an Unlocked Galaxy S4 that I brought from AT&T is that even when you can get LTE with it (and your iphone) it seems that not all antennas are carrying same frequencies, so your phone will change to Edge a lot easier and frequent, I'm saying that the only one in my family with an AT&T service was me, my 2 daughters and wife are on a T-mobile Family Plan, on the past 2 weeks that I switched to T-Mobile and was using the S4 until I could get the S5, all of them were on 4g LTE while me was sometimes but most of the time it changed to Edge, again, just in certain areas (Antennas).
Since I got the S5 on Thursday I can finally say that I get the service I was expecting.
I live in chicago and go all over....north west south su urbs and always have great service. I think your att .s4 may be missing some antennas

I currently have a $70 prepaid from T-Mobile. I am using it in the iPhone 5S. The iPhone does not seem to play nicely with T-Mobile's bands (despite supporting all of them). That is why I was asking how the S5 performs with T-Mobile service. Does the phone really hold onto HSPA+/LTE signals or does it drop to EDGE often? Using my T-Mobile today, I had no problem streaming spotify on the way to work. AT&T signal is still a lot stronger, but T-Mobile got the job done.

I live just NorthWest of you, up in Woodridge, and I work in Oak Brook. I have nearly full bars all of the time with terrific speeds. I travel around chi-land and in the city for work and it is just as great all around that area. I seem to only have issues once I get North of Vernon Hills, West of Aurora, and South of i-55. And by issues I mean 1 to 3 bars and not a full signal.
I have family that are in Indiana and I have to go near Muncie Indiana. I take i-65 South and i can tell you once I get past Merriville, the signal is spotty, until I eventually lose it for a bit. Where you are, I'd say 2-3 bars on the LTE is likely the norm, at least for now. Seems like every trip I make into Indiana it keeps improving so I'm sure before too long you will have a terrific connection most of the time.

Thanks for your input. My biggest problem is the constant switching from LTE to HSPA+. I do not know if Samsung phones handle that better than the iPhones but my god is it horrible. My battery on my 5S decreased 25% this morning when with my ATT sim it only decreases 2 percent streaming spotify. I'm not in IL often but T-Mobile is a lot better there. In northwest Indiana it's Swiss cheese coverage (at least now).
People like me are screwed because AT&T is the only carrier that works well. Of course what's the point when they lock down their phones and eliminate features off flagship devices. But I should not have to change my smartphone habits to accommodate another carrier.

T-Mobile 4G LTE Crazy fast!

OK, I am blown away at how fast T-Mobile 4G LTE is.
I get crazy speeds. Like over 85Mbps. I even get over 100Mbps at times. That's faster then my Comcast. LOL [emoji1] T-Mobile really does have the fastest 4G LTE in the Nation. I am loving T-Mobile service. Beats Sprint Spark LTE. Anyways what do you guys think? [emoji4]

Mid 40s to low 70s constantly for me depending on where I am.
My speeds are definitely not the fastest in the world but they are pretty darn fast!!

Seattle/Kent Washington area. Always get 60Mbps+ compared to Sprint Spark Fast Network at 12Mbps max. Lol Sprint really Blows! Lol ?
My speed test WiFi is Comcast with my own WiFi box and second pic is my abismal tmobile lte speed....
Sorry idk why it decided to upload images twice like that ...
I get around 50 down and 10ish up with my G900T on AT&T in Scottsdale, AZ.
Also, around 50. I'm in Lake Ridge, Northern Virginia -just 20 minutes from Washington DC. T-Mobile in the last year has really boost the speed in this area, a year ago I got less than 10 Mbps.
Hahaha this is what I get . Im in Georgia south of Atlanta
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Free mobile app
I get close to that depending on what part of my city I'm in. Normally I get high 20's to low 40's.
Considering network load during the daytime, that's pretty good for most carriers. At night I can go above 70.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Free mobile app
These are indeed crazy numbers. Only after the recent software upgrade did my speeds go up into the mid 20's. I tried multiple phones in the last year and a half trying to get higher than 5-7 mbps. Just gave up and pegged it to being in a low spot at my residence (?). I posted here that I thought that a trip to the USVI summer before last had screwed up my data speed on Tmo's side. They told me twice that my settings on their end were screwy.
I'm not a power user so never really had performance that I was unhappy with overall. I love my S5. I have been seeing these low speeds when I check with Speedtest. Just got a refurbed Note3 (which I like a lot) and my speedtest tells me it is giving me between 13 and 24 over 4 tests. I'm happy with that.
Have never in nearly two years of LTE here seen anything over 28 mbps, so 80 is pretty impressive indeed.
Also a question-My Speedtest app's "odometer" tops out at 50mbps.......?
wish I could get that high of speed
Usually only get 18Mb/sec down and 7 up. Called them and they said it was pretty much the only tower north of the river here in Kansas City that was LTE enabled. YAY me...../sarcasm
Over my wifi, I get the usual 100Mb/sec down and 6 up as that is what I pay Time Warner for. So no complaints there.
Using Twizted Lollipop 5.0 V1 as well on my S5.
Super fast.
Cali speed suks. ..
From home I get 70+... fastest speedtest was 106mbps. So insane and way faster than the 40mbps with comcast which I always thought was unbeatable in the area.
So anyone getting throttled for downloading torrents or other stuff. A few months ago I posted a link saying tmobile would throttle your data if they find out your using your unlimited 4g Lte to download stuff. Well it's been a few months and I'm still going strong. I still can't believe Tmobile Is faster then Comcast. That's just crazy. Wonder how Sprints data service is going. Lol not the Spark network is complete crap. Sprint Says The Spark is the nation's fastest data service. They must be smoking to much crack. Because I know some people that have Sprints Spark LTE data service and it can't even get 10Mbps most of the time. And the data goes off and on all day long. I even tried Sprint Spark network with the Galaxy s5 and after a week I gave it back and switched back to tmobile. So T-Mobile Rocks!
I can confirm that I too get pretty fast speeds. I was blown away a few days ago with these results!

And of course this is with my S4. I just bought my S5 today since my S4 broke today.

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+'s LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
I got the S10 + unlocked Us version on T-MOBILE network. To compared to my previous phone which is the Google Pixel 2Xl, the cellular signal is lot weaker. I usually have 3-4 bar at work and full signal at home. Now I got only one or two bars at work and also one or two bars at home.

You don't compare bars, they mean nothing. Compare dBm in the About Phone -> SIM card status screen. Also make sure you're actually on the same band, depending on your carrier. If your phone allows it enter *#0011# and see that you're actually connected to the same band on the same Cell ID.
Edit: Just tested my Note 9 and Note 10. Same CID, band 5. both RSCP: -84.
I'm finding the dBm the same as a previous phone but while 4G download speed is comparable, around 100 Mbits , upload is worse at 20 vs 40Mbits at the same location. In other locations to, 4G upload seems to struggle.

September update seem to fixed my signal
issue. Now I got stable signal and download speed in LTE gained up to 25-30 mbps. Used to be 1-2 mbps at the same basement.
Worst reception of any phone i've ever owned even with wilson antenna
Best reception of any phone I've had, including my Note 8 it replaced. At home I've got the Verizon network extender so I have my own cell tower but every where else it pulls in signals great.
I compered with my note 9 here in Germany in 1800mhz and 800mhz 4g bands. On my work I have had 0 to 1 bars of 4g (note 9)but it was usable on - 110 dB. Galaxy note 10+ is showing lower signal almost all the time I was @ 4g 1800 MHz but with same dB level. But the note 10+ is more stable and even without bars or 1 bar the connection was stable and the streams where running great. Than I tested a location where 4g is almost impossible (in this test I forced to 4g only) and the note 10+ was getting me data!
The bad thing the note 10+ is not switching from h+ to 4g like the note 9. It takes much longer time. I almost always force 4g because i don't want to wait till the note 10+ switches to 4g. It's for sure normal behavior because h+ is much stronger in this location but 4g even without bars is faster.
So with my testing with The note 9 and note 10+ I would they the receiver on the note 10+ is a little bit more sensitive than the note 9 but shows sometimes one bar less.
orange egypt .. The bad thing the note 10+ is not switching normal from h+ to 4g or 4g to h+ like any phone . when switch from or to 4g freezing then restated every switching between H+ 4G plz any help every switch restart and freeze

I have the exact opposite result here in germany
Where my note 8 stayed at h+, especially while using data, my note10+ switches to lte way faster
Here in Mex my device always connects to LTE, even if 3g or 2g have stronger signal
Today was my 1st time on 5G. Staples Center in Los Angeles.

just a thought: maybe can try change APN settings? at my place, sometimes there are two sets of APN setting for certain service providers. it solved my problem on other phones.
What are those APN settings?
