Tanix TX3 Mini TV Box based on the new Amlogic S905W - Android Stick & Console AMLogic based Computers

So, there is a new SoC about to heat the markets. Amlogic is trying to beat the RK3229 (low cost processor) and attacks with the S905W.
Amlogic S905W is almost same as S905X but they removed something to decrease its price but without affect too much to the normal users. This case, they removed the [email protected] and it works up to [email protected] For streamers this feature is not a big problem and they can get a powerful box under lower price.
Oh, and it supports Android 7.1.1
First TV Box featuring S905W is the Tanix TX3 Mini. Here some pictures:

When the mecool m8s pro plus is only $4 more, i dont know why people would buy this one?
mecool m8s pro plus has widevine and hdcp, no other box under $70 dollars has that.

I bought this device and make an unboxing video. It has HDMI-CEC feature and it is much cooler than S912 based TV Boxes. If your expectations are not too high, S905W would be a good and cool solution. Here is the unboxing video:

This device has a maximum video output resolution of 720p. It can decode a 1080p video, but it will make it look like a 720p.

I have one. The UI was rendered @ 720p to avoid performance issues, but it does not downscale FHD videos to HD, that's not true. Local videos @ 1080p will play at 1080p, same for 4k but only if they're at a max of 30fps.
In recent updates they changed because it caused issues with YouTube and other streaming apps. The streaming apps that detected the UI @ 720p, rendered at a max of 720p, so, after some complaints, they removed that restriction.
The box comes pretty much uncluttered, with only a pre-installed version of Kodi, a working Play Store and not much else besides stock apps. It's pre-rooted, SELinux in permissive, which seems to be the norm on these cheap boxes.
The worst thing is overheating. It easily goes up to 80+ Celsius, so i changed CPU management settings in the Governor, limited max clock to 1Ghz and deactivated one of the cores (using KAM). Performance still good and temp is around 65 now. Unfortunately, one of the USB's is already fried after just 1 week, i suspect the overheating issue.

If you play the attached video on your PC connected to a 1080p monitor, you'll see that the field "1080" has a 1-pixel-precise pattern, but if you play it with this crappy box on the same monitor that field is made of thicker lines (2 pixel width). To be honest, i admit I didn't try the latest firmware, but i doubt that they changed anything in that respect. Most people can't see the difference, or they don't want to see, between a 1080 and a 720 video. But the difference is quite noticeable if you want to us the box for web browsing sitting close to the monitor.

Is this zip file flashable within the box itself? I just can't work with the flash tool and that stupid method to plug usb at the same time as power plug, tried a million times with the img files and just couldn't update.

I just received this item from [email protected], tested with videoprojector 1080P and youtube, it looks fine (I'm not a video maniac, I just need it to see netflix and co., no 4K...) and I bought an Alfawise S95 that should be exatly the same (maybe without optical out and smaller, that make me afraid abaout temperature, Tanix is VERY hot!).
I have 3 questions:
1-I can't find the root settings, do I need to install supersu?
2-Actually I NEED magisk systmless root, not a classic root, due to 2 streaming apps that doesn't works with classic root (and home banking too) is there a way to remove the root and patch the boot.img, maybe the one from the new beta firmware?
3-I can turn root OFF and application won't use/see it?
Thank you!

does it Support 5.1 Surround Sound Output?
becouse has spdif output...but at specs doesnt say anything...but tanix tx3 max supports..and i cant understand the differences between tanix tx3 mini and tanix tx3 max

Alfawise S95 mounts TX3 Mini motherboard, then, size and connectors are same.
Probably your firmware is not updated yet. You can upgrade to this version (I recommend you OPTION A):
BETA Firmware Available for testing 20171220
_______________________________________
Assuming 20171107 is the latest stable version available, these are the changes:
Root ON/OFF menu option added at Settings
New Auto Frame-Rate menu option added at Settings
Video layer improvement (fixed a 720p downscale bug)
Mouse pointer resized
Corrections from a new Amlogic's SDK
Improved WiFi throughput
Some other video improvements
Youtube 1080p setting has been fixed with 20171107
HOW TO UPDATE:
OPTION A) Upgrade from TF card or USB memory by using "Update" APP
1. Copy the .ZIP file to your TF Card.
2. Insert the card in the TX3 Mini.
3. Open "Update" APP (already preinstalled).
4. Press "Select" button and choose the .ZIP file
5. Press "Update" button and wait. The box will reboot and upgrade.
- If something goes wrong, try again.
You can get the .ZIP file here: - DOWNLOAD ZIP BETA FIRMWARE -
OPTION B) Flash from computer by USB port using "Burning Tool" software
1. Download the IMG file.
2. Follow this tutorial. It is same process for this model.
- If something goes wrong, try again or choose "Force Erase" option.
You can get the .IMG file here: - DOWNLOAD IMG BETA FIRMWARE -
You will find the Root ON/OFF switch at: Settings > Common > More Settings > Superuser
You can have a try :good:

That did the trick, updated flawlessly, thank you! Finally i can have my box updated, and YouTube in FHD runs smoothly. TV Streaming in FHD also runs smoothly but HW decoder needs to be selected in MX Player options. And no, the box does not downscale FHD because the difference is very very noticeable between HD and FHD on both scenarios.

My broblem is:is it a systemlessroot, can i use magisk to hide the root? Here in italy 90% of pay streaming services won't works with common root, only hiding it with magisk... Well, actually if turning root off doesn't reset the device, maybe I can switch it on or off when I need to use apps that refuse to works with root... Could it work?
Last question:firmwares are interchangeable with alphawise s95 (exactly same specification)

I have no brightness settings after last update.

Getting to optimal target resolution, can be done step by step, that's how I arrived at optimal resolution for Touch-HD.
1) Target resolution = 800*480
2) Aspect Ratio = 800/480 = 1.666666666666667
3) Now start tweaking one of the parameters, lets reduce the height to 348,
in order to maintain aspect ratio we have to multiply (1.666666666666667 * 348) = 580.000000000000116 ~ 580
4) Thats it !! now set your target resolution in the converter to 580*348 and see how it performs
Make sure you increase your bitrate to get sharper and better quality.
For Touch-HD, I use the following configuration:
Target Resolution = 540x384
Bitrate = 1500
Since I'm using Linux on all my systems but am also a little too lazy to try and find out the optimal ffmpeg-parameters for my Blackstone - would it be possible to get a non-compiled version of VideoConvertor? If it's java, it should probably be fixable for Linux too...
I'm having problems in converting a 720p mkv file to a WVGA (800x480) format. For some reason, the screen keeps getting stretched vertically. How can I make this program automatically fit a WVGA format in the settings?
Try the following configuration
What is your configuration? (Screenshot or generated .bat file will help).
Tried encoding a sample video, take a look at the configuration used...
Great App!! very fast!!
The Touch Pro 2 fails at playing HTC-HD Profiled videos.
To play smooth videos on the Rhodium, change the resolution what I've found to be the optimal resolution: 640 x 384
I don't know why 800 x 480 doesn't work well...
Yes thats true, rendering video of that size requires better processor, even Touch-HD fails to perform well at that resolution. Thanks for sharing optimal resolution: 640 x 384 for touch-pro, will include that to profiles.xml.
I am looking at optimizing the perfomance at 800x480, its closely related to the codec used for conversion, will include this fix in the next release.
Thaks !!!
Great App
Really liked to use your VC v1.1, trying your V2 now, many thanks for sharing
Very nice app and thanks also to skyler for the TP2 resolution tip.
Nice!! Looking forward for the new version

This is an awesome video converter.
But I'm having the same problem with 720p MKV files (1280 x 720). I'm trying to get them down to VGA size for the Touch Pro (640 x 480). (I'm using the Touch Diamond settings.) The files output are stretched vertically so far, that they're not usable. All other file types and sizes I've tried to convert have worked wonderfully.
So this seems to be an issue with any desired output size when using 720p MKV files.
If anyone has a way to get 720p MKVs to work successfully with this converter, please share how you did it. I hope that perhaps this can be improved upon in a future release.

I'm using a Herman (CDMA Touch Pro) with NRGZ28's 9/20 build of EnergyROM for that device. I have not had any problems viewing videos converted using the Touch Diamond 640 X 480 @ 512kbps settings. (With the exception of trying to convert 720p MKVs as I mentioned in my earlier comment, but that's a different issue.)
Have you who had problems with the Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium) tried using a better set of video drviers on your device?
Fixed!!!

What does this app do?
It allows to change the resolution and the pixels density of the screen to pre-defined settings according to standard screen aspect ratios
Why is this useful?
- Watching Video on an external monitor/tv using the hdmi output will usually mirror the screen content without correcting for aspect ratio, by setting the correct resolution and pixel density of the screen to match the monitor/tv allows to fill the entire external screen and avoid the side black bars.
- Playing games on an external monitor/tv: normally, the device will render the games to the full resolution available on the device's screen. On the case of the Nexus 10, games will be rendered to its huge resolution of 2560x1600 and then it will be scaled down to the monitor/tv screen resolution wasting GPU prepossessing power and resulting on more heat and power consumption during gaming. By reducing the screen resolution to match the external monitor/tv less processing power is needed to render the game at the lower monitor/tv's resolution, many games will even use the extra processing power available for more effects or more frames per second (depending on the game, no established by this app).
- Simulate other screen resolutions and pixel density for android developers to test their applications on the physical device and observe how their application will look on other devices.
Available options:
-Manual Settings: Allows to manually select the desired resolution and pixel density according to pre-defined standard aspect ratios.
-Auto Detection: Will run in the background and will detect HDMI connections and disconnections. On a HDMI connection detected, a notification will be presented to apply the detected screen resolution and pixel density appropriate for your screen. On a HDMI disconnection, the notification will allow to return to the device's default settings.
Reboot Mode: New Soft Reboot will only reboot the graphical interface not the entire system (Fast). Normal Full Reboot (safest, use if you find interface issues with the Soft Reboot).
Screen Size: Define your screen size (affects dpi calculation). This setting comes pre-defined for the nexus 10, but you should change it to match your screen size on other devices.
HDMI Resolution Preset: Define your preferred output resolution instead of using the Auto-Detection option .
New Default Settings: The default settings will now reset the dpi value to the factory configuration. It appears that the nexus 10 comes from factory with a dpi setup to 320 instead of 300. The new reset feature should also work for other devices.
Auto DPI Selection: No more guessing work, it will select the appropriate dpi value for the selected resolution and the screen size defined on the settings.
Screen OFF feature: Allows you turn your device's screen off while keeping the output to the hdmi to reduce the power usage. To turn the screen back ON just press the power button twice or simply disconnect the hdmi.
Touchless Profile: It applies the profile automatically upon hdmi connection without user interaction.
- The profile can either auto detect the TV resolution or apply the preset resolution
- If selected, it will turn the screen off automatically when the hdmi is in use.
- On hdmi disconnection, the screen settings will automatically return to default.
What is New
New Recovery Feature: Recovers the default screen setting after an user specified number of power/charger connections. Will restore the device if the user applied a configuration not supported by the device.
To trigger the recovery feature, plug and unplug the power/charger to the device allowing ~1s between plug/unplug as many times as defined on the settings menu, default is 3 times.
v1.27:
- New Recovery Feature to restore default setting upon cycling the power connection 3 times at ~1s between connections.
- Fixed interface issues on Nexus 7 2013.
- Support for small screens up to 3.5"
- New first time setup to ensure the user select the appropriate screen size of their devices.
- Added the screen size to the current settings display.
v1.26: Improved the Preset Resolution Input dialog to avoid incorrect inputs.
v1.25: - Improved support for devices that are naturally oriented in portrait mode (i.e. nexus 7, cellphones, etc).
- Added more resolutions, specially to support smaller devices and cellphones.
- Added "Touchless Profile" option.
v1.24: - fixed a crash issue happening on devices that did not have BusyBox installed. if you don't have busybox installed, the app will now prompt you to install it.
- fixed the Auto-Brightness feature that was awakening the screen for some devices on ambient light changes.
- Added Screen Turn OFF request for support on devices where screen turn off is not yet supported.
v1.23:
-Improved screen OFF detection mode to support more devices. Allows you turn your device's screen off while keeping the output to the hdmi to reduce the power usage
v1.22:
-Screen OFF feature.
v1.21:
-Adjusted App's interface for portrait and landscape mode, and smaller screens.
-Back compatibility with JB 4.2
-Added preset button on main application
v1.2:
- Auto DPI Selection.
- Reboot Mode Selection.
- Screen Size Selection.
- HDMI resolution Preset option.
v1.01: Code cleaning
v1.0: Initial Release
Why a reboot is needed to apply the new screen settings?
- For now the safest way to restore the entire Interface with the new resolution and pixel density is to reboot the system. The new Soft Reboot should reduce considerably the time required to reset the interface.
MOD EDIT: Link to Google Play Removed due to XDA advertising paid app/theme policy. OP can check for PM from me.
This sounds like an interesting app!
Gonna try it out, but I have a few questions, does the resolution change happen only when connected to a HDMI output? Are there any benefits to having a lower res for say regular daily use of the tablet, say like not hogging the gpu or lowering the gpu temperature?
Also, according to Xda rules you shouldn't advertise paid apps here, you either have to make a free trial or this post will get removed, but I would love to keep the thread alive...

s1m4an,
I did not know about the paid app rules for posting at this forum; however, I am planning to release a trial or beta version specially to bring support to other devices.
You can change the resolution at any moment (without HDMI connected) by opening the app and selecting the desired resolution and pixel density and then apply the changes.
The HDMI detection just allows you to change the settings to match the detected external screen automatically without having to worry about what resolution and density you should select.
Lowering the resolution will definitely reduce the GPU utilization and GPU power consumption (heat generated) especially at graphic intensive apps like games, even at 1080p the GPU needs to render half the amount of pixels than the default resolution. I have tested this with games and I generally gain frames per second or I am able to increase the detail level of the game effects. In normal usage, GPU utilization will also be reduced but I will imagine that non graphic intensive applications will not give you such drastic difference, probably watching movies will.
Another benefit is that it allows you to test how applications will look on other devices, if you are a developer.
Thanks for the comment,
Yes i would be great if there was a trial version or something like that.. It sounds interesting..
Hi forbitel, I bought your app and I like it so far. Works fine with stock 4.3 and it's a very easy way to have a true full screen 16:9 trough HDMI. Shame to Google for giving a stupid 16:10 aspect ratio to our HDTVs.
I have better results with 16:9 2560x1400 with my tv
Setting 1920x1080 creates a weird interface in the tablet. Looks like a old phone launcher...
What I would like to see in a future update is to set a favourite resolution when HDMI is detected so we don't have to go to the app every time we want to change it.
Good work!

Hi forbitel, I bought your app and I like it so far. Works fine with stock 4.3 and it's a very easy way to have a true full screen 16:9 trough HDMI. Shame to Google for giving a stupid 16:10 aspect ratio to our HDTVs.

Yes I saw the update. Thank you!
I'll try in the next hours.
But now I have a problem. I use the keyboard app "Swiftkey Tablet" and even after several reboots, going to default resolution and reinstalling the app, it's size is like 3 times the normal. It's like the app thinks I'm still in 1920x1080 and not in the default 2560x1600. And I can't use it...
The stock keyboard works fine.
I'll post a screenshot later!
Edit:
Maybe reinstalling the app was not the solution (it may keep settings in SDmemory). I'll try to erase app data and reinstall.
Edit 2: Solved.
But I really want to thank you for this app. Now I can use Nexus 10 as decent multimedia player with my TV.
New problem: sometimes I have to apply and reboot up to 3 times to get the desired resolution. I have to test more...

What specific resolution and density are you trying to set? is it through the main application window or through the hdmi notification?
I see you updated the app again.
First try and success, resolution changed fine.
I'll try more.
With this latest update everything works great. 1 reboot needed to change resolution and its very easy to have a preset one.
Sounds like a really useful app. Unfortunately I don't really want to pay for until I know it works for me. I will probably pay once the app matures after a few updates.

Well, the updates are coming non stop. It works perfectly fine now and the latest update brought a great new feature: Screen off with hdmi out active.
With this app we can have finally a serious media player with the nexus 10.
Congrats to the developer.
@forbitel
Can you tell me what's the shell command (that you have implemented in the app) to "soft"reboot the GUI?

And what screen resolution settings are you using now that will work perfectly with your TV?

mrruin,
I have tested few popular keyboards from the market and found the following:
- Google Keyboard: Adjust the best out all I have tested, it consistently adjust with changes of screen resolution.
- SlideIT: Somewhat adjusting to the screen resolution changes, works better than Swype and SwiftKey.
- Swype: do not dynamically adjust to screen changes, some resolutions works but wont adjust to the screen on 1080p.
- SwiftKey: do not dynamically adjust to screen changes, some resolutions works but wont adjust to the screen on 1080p.
I would recommend you use Google Keyboard when changing the resolution of the device, until these keyboards are fixed for resolution changes.
Where can I get that wallpaper?? That looks really cool.
So when are you going to release the trial betsa version like you said you would ? It has been almost 2 months

Nexus 5 slimport HDMI
Has anyone had any luck changing the HDMI resolution?
On a Nexus 5 or any other device?
I have tried all combination of settings i can think of but it either boot loops or resolution stays on 1080p.
Im guessing when it boot loops with the cable plugged in its trying to output 720p but doesn't like it much.
I'd like to provide some sort of log if would be useful.

If someone would kindly test this attachment and let me know if u have any problems thatd be awesome (install instructions are in the op)
Here's my take on modding the bitrate. Seems to be similar to my N3. So far I've changed:
4k: 48mbit to 65mbit
1080p: 17mbit to 20mbit
1080/60p: 28mbit to 40mbit
Rest is unchanged. I don't own a N4 so testing is appreciated
**link removed, having some compiling issues..
Version 3 is out!
Thanks for the mod.
I will test it after rooting.
Is there a chance to save the pictures as RAW?
Because RAW has a better dynamic range.
Since a while, i use raw on my dslr. The difference is dramaticly.
Spezially white balance correction is much easier and the result is better.
I cant understand Samsung and other producer, why in hell a simple function like this is allways disabled. Raw is the uncompressed data from the cmos. There is no need to destroy this good data, with a compression algorithm. 100% jpgs are not real 100%.
Actual, a good 64gb Micro sd card costs round about 40 Euro. Thats enough space for raw pix.
If raw is not possible, maybe png or bmp?
I think raw is over kill for the image quality u get from mobile iso and the amount of time to simply take and process for a normal mobile phone camera+sensor to take the image is far longer than stock, requires a steadier hand and probably negates the OIS, in my experience ppl want something they can take quickly, with easy steady shot every time and open up in the stock gallery so yuy2 or ycrcb format bmp or png would be a far better option for most of us.
I'd leave raw for dslr, the stock camera is already outstanding but we can make it better.
Okay. Thanks for the answer. As far as i know, OneplusOne or an other producer has the raw option in a new smartphone model integrated. I bought the sandisk uhc card. This card is multiple times faster than older cards. I think it can store big files Quick. I use the same cards in my gh4 dslr in 4k recording mode. And in full hd with 200mbit/sec. No glitches.
here a little comparison:
oneplusone (raw/jpg)

nexus 5 (raw/jpg) (with android 5 cam api, dng is possible.)

for me, it looks interesting. and the difference is clearly visible.

I think its overkill for a mobile Raw. But hey if its possible some would like that. As it is it takes pretty decent images. One of the best cameras on a mobile I think.
Anything is better than jpeg to be sure, i still don't understand why companies don't use a better format to this day and not get better out of their devices like Oneplus.
kevinrocksman you're quick with the mods mate, 65mbit is amazing, how big are those video file sizes? Already ordered my 128gb card, my internal is 90% full so i cant record for more than a min in UHD, and does it produce any errors when it hits 5 mins?
Actuality there is an app that lets you record in PNG, Camera FV-5. I think its around $5 on play.

Not sure how to change it to raw. Wouldnt even know where to start. Well 4k seems to be around 7-12MB per second. After 5 mjn on 4k it stops. As for anything else like 1080 no problems so far. Gone up to 20 minutes so far
I like to have an option Raw+JPG for some picture that need better quality. The GN4 JPG algorithm give some noise.
Raw is coming in android lollipop. Hopefully samsung updates their camera app to utilize it but km they don't maybe this mod can.

My honest opinion about the phone?
I truely like this phone (used as dailydriver 2 weeks now) because it has a pretty nice design, it's not too heavy (which is also important) and the overall quality is good. It does all things fine, and I haven't really experienced any issues or flaws besides that the compass is not so accurate. The camera is in my eyes above average (pretty good) - pictures are sharp and clear, the batterylife very good and besides that it is a very basic phone.
A free Tempered Glass Screen Protector is also included with the phone, and it comes with a normal preinstalled screenprotector out of the box.

I don't think they are MUCH better, maybe a little bit better. the aperture etc. are the same in the EXIF infos when I compare them.
I am using the latest OTA (20150820-222255) update on the phone and I do not have any problems with the notification LED, widgets or apps.
Widgets works fine and stay after a reboot. What apps should not work? And notification LED works as it should for missed calls and SMS.

I don't understand what you mean with 1)? what app does not work???
And the notification LED is only in red yes, but that should also be enough. They didn't promise RGB colours.
Whatsapp I don't personally use, so can't comment on that.
installed apps are in the data / app of internal memory and then you have to run them at startup. To run them automatically to be copied into the folder system / app ...
The problem with whatsapp that a lot of users have, is that usually the notifications aren't received. Some users can receive whatsapp's notification only opening the app and then exit from it with the central button, but not the triangle button. This problem is also common to other app like viber, aquamail etc.

I think it is more a problem with whatsapp itself, I heard that whatsapp gives problems on many different phones, not only on the ZOPO here. Seems to be common that whatsapp doesn't work correct on many smartphones.
What copeppe and franciros think is thet the 3th party widgets do not load after reboot. Only the widgets from firmware is loaded without problems.
By the way, excellent review.

On the lastest OTA Wireless Update from ZOPO these things also seems to be fixed. Here the changelog, it is similar on both the ZOPO Speed 7 and ZOPO Speed 7 Plus
Seems to cover all the bugs mentioned or?
Also I am using "Weather & Clock widget" on my ZOPO and the widget is always there, also after a reboot!
Yes, I see now. Finally upgrade!!!
Great review S7yler, please PM me a link/coupon for purchase if you got one tnx
How do I upgrade zp951 20150911-194355 when it is the root?
If you have root & the recovery image installed, then If someone releases a zip-file of 20150911-194355 update, it can be installed via recovery.
I guess it is that simple.
Otherwise, its a re-flash of a full ROM when the 20150911-194355 update is included in the next ROM download, then a re-root.
I downloaded the update. I did not install it. Launched the phone in recovery mode . Leeching the menu up to install zip from adupsfota folder and install update.zip. I aborted the installation.
What am I doing wrong? : płacz:
Check the zip file size; I have read that the original update was 122 MB, and the most recent update is 132 MB. The first one, 122 MB, must have been damaged or compiled wrong.
Look here: http://www.androidiani.com/forum/zopo/473439-thread-ufficiale-zopo-speed-7-plus-zp952-22.html
I expect my Speed 7 (non plus) to arrive tomorrow, so I am only guessing until I try out all this root & recovery stuff for myself.

Tx3 max s905w only 720p resolution in kodi

I cannot change the resolution in kodi to fullhd
Options are grayed out.
Is there a wat to force fullhd?
I installed the dualos firmware, and librexec plays in 1080p Just fine
You have to use a rooted device and app for changing resolution on kodi only
Set the appropriate resolution in Android settings and then reboot. The Kodi should then pick it up.
