Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon (Global) - OK to Root after update to 7.0? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello from Australia,
I recently purchased the Redmi Note 4 (Global) and absolutely love it! After owning iPhone for the last 8 yrs I am finding it very refreshing. I am looking forward to being part of this Android community
My questions is this - I am very keen on rooting the device but have also found that there is a pending update to 8.5.4.0 (Miui) and 7.0 (Nougat). Will I still be able to root it after I update and if so where is the best guide for me to do this?
Many thanks

yes, you can root it after updating to 7.0. First unlock bootloder. Install twrp recovery. and then flash SuperSu zip.
Note-Dont forget to flash lazyflasher-no-verify-opt zip after flashing twrp or you would go into bootloop.

Hello, and many thanks for your quick reply. Good, I had this guide that I was going to follow but then found out about my pending update:
EDIT - sorry, had to edit the url link as I'm a new user. h t t p ://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=667496
Do you think this is the right steps for me to follow? also, I have never flashed or tweaked an Android phone so don't know how to do the flashing of lazyflasher-no-verify-opt zip. I don't see that in the steps. How exactly do I do that? Do you have a link?
Thank you.

steps given in the guide are almost correct.First unlock bootloader which is the biggest hassle in whole process. Probably you wont be able unlock bootloader in first few tries as mi unlock tool will probably stuck at 99% and show error "account not binded to device".You can wait a few days and try again but i dont think that will work. To solve this problem what i did was-
download miui developer rom version 7.2.16 link-http://bigota.d.miui.com/7.2.16/miui_HMNote4XGlobal_7.2.16_e6eed016d8_6.0.zip
Now go to updater app choose downloaded zip as update package. Now updater would start decrypting it and your phone will be updated to developer rom. Now when on developer rom go to updater app and there will be an ota for latest version, update. Now when on latest developer version try to unlock again using mi unlock tool. I dont know if it will work for you but it worked for me.
Now your bootloader is unlocked, go to mido section in xda forums and download twrp for redmi note 4. To flash twrp recovery, there are many ways. process given in your guide may also work. But what I did was downloaded "mini flasher" link-"https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=25193&task=get" install mini flasher.choose install twrp, browse to the recovery image you downloaded and it will automatically flash it and reboot your phone to recovery.
Now when your phone is in recovery mode coose 'install'
choose the lazyflasher zip file you earlier downloaded. now reboot. again go to recovery install SuperSu zip file(link given your guide) reboot. your phone will probably bootloop one time but dont worry it is fine. now when your phone reboots it is rooted.

Well I sucessfully updated the phone to Nougat and it was very easy.
Now I have tried to unlock the bootloader but keep getting this message:
您所在的IP申请次数超标
I have googled it and it says I have tried too many times from my IP address. But I haven't - this was the first time. I have tried 3 times, with the same result.
Does anyone know how to get around this problem?
Thanks

The nougat update eats to much ram I got only 1.3 GB free ram

You could try Miui 9 beta channel after miui 8.5 update without unlocking or rooting. Just had to download the miui 9 recovery rom package. Place it in folder named downloaded-rom. Backup your imp data before proceeding. Goto the updater app or settings about, tap three dot menu. Choose update and select the downloaded file. It will erase all your data and update to miui 9.
They release updates weekly. And battery backup is outstanding.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73086754&postcount=124

Anyone able to help with this? I have read it is a common issue for it to incorrectly say you have had too many attempts but not really any conclusive answer as to how to get around the problem.
I am really keen on unlocking my bootloader. Thanks in advance.

Nubia Z7 (nx506J) working with Google Apps.

I have a nubia z7 with rom version 2.05 (Android 5 and Nubia UI 3), with google apps working without problems. Even youtube.
It took 3 days to figure out how to do it, without rooting the phone.
But some tools are needed...
I upgraded my phone rom (which came with version 2.26, a modified 1.26), put rom 2.02 then 2.03 and at last 2.05, which is the last one in nubia chinese site.
I used nubia rom updater, for the roms version 2.02 and 2.03 you have to decompress to each folder and point nubia updater to that folder.
The last one (version 2.05), i used option update of the phone.
Then uninstalled every chinese app. Downloaded gapps micro for android 5.0.1 and copy to the internal storage.
Then rebooted the phone with TWRP and installed the zip file. With TWRP root the phone, in advanced menu.
After that, i reboot into android system and made login into google play and updated everything.
It's a google phone now.
I think this should work for Nubia Z7 mini and Nubia Z7 Max
I hope this help someone

hi, i'm Senh0r. I had logged with an old account.
now you can uninstall all chinese apps ,that you don't want.
then copy file gapps to internal storage.
Check if you have port ADB selected, by inserting on dial number *#7678# , if not, select it.
Now run the TWRP, which is in chinese, when the menu show up, choose option 3 and wait for the phone reboot into TWRP.
When you enter in TWRP, on bottom of screen you can choose english language.
After that is only to install the zip file. don't check for signature.
Now it's only need to reboot phone.
To enter on TWRP you need always to run the program to reboot your phone.
Anything ask

update to 2.05 no problem
But after installing gapps it crashes in the setup phase
any ideas ?
Did you rooted the phone before installing gapps by twrp?
Rooted from twrp, installed gapps, rebooted.
After a few minutes it started, google setup wizard.
It crashes with an exception.
Gonna give it a shot in a few
Call me an idiot, but I didn't make a backup of the delivered stock ROM KitKat 2.26.
Please have you guys an image? I am stuck for good.
And cleaned the cache and dalvik partition too? Mine its working with no problems.
Cleaned cache etc.
I could hit me for being so stupid to forget backing the original ROM up.
I can easily go to a stock Chinese ROM but at least a KitKat Google ROM would be nice.
Señor or anyone, can you provide a image of 2.26?
Unfortunately I didn't backup it either , but soon I will create a zip file with my Rom with Google apps installed.
I will check Nubia site for older roms too.
Getting the hands on an 1.26 is relatively easy, but the googlefied 2.26 seems to be rather hard to find ...

Hi, I have my phone with 2.26, I have rooted it with kingo, if you can provide me a custom recovery I can do a nandroid back up of complete rom.
Hi Steveyknoxville, Señor shared a custom recovery based on twrp and that works very well. I would really appreciate if you could provide us with the 2.26 ROM

Hi, I have read that senor twrp does not work on 4.4.2, are you confirming it does. My biggest question I need answered before I do anything is, if I install twrp how do I go back to stock recovery so I can do Ota updates to get to lollipop. Thanks.
Sorry but I can't confirm weather it fully works or not. I followed señor's guide and updated the phone. But if I recall the thread correctly from nubia cn forums the stock ROM should be a slightly modified twrp anyways.
Try just going into the recovery mode.
You should be able to backup the ROM.
Thanks for the invested time.

A Total Beginner/Noob Flashing A New Redmi Note 3

Hello everyone,
tl;dr version
What's the best way to install a custom rom on the Redmi Note 3 out of the box with a locked bootloader. What is the best rom to use for maximum functionality.
I have been following these forums for a while, but haven't got around to creating an account and posting. I'm new to flashing roms, and my experience goes as far as following guides to flash a Samsung S4, and a Samsung S2. The Samsung phones were really easy to flash, and I just followed guides in a robotic way without ever actually learning anything. For the record, CM12 on the Samsung S2, which I'm using because I smashed my S4, is absolutely unbelievable in regards to the increase of performance.
One of my work friends was telling me that he has a mate who bought a Chinese phone really cheap and flashed it. Getting excited, knowing exactly where I need to look to flash a phone, I impulsively researched these phones and bought a Redmi Note 3 for $173 AUD. It's on the way in the mail. Having looked at the hardware specs, this price is absolutely ridiculous. I was more swayed to buy the Redmi Note 3, because multiple sites reported that the second sim slot can hold a micro SD card. The only downside I can see to this phone is the bloatware and stock rom that it comes with, and the reason for this post is to discuss the best way in which to flash a new rom. If you have managed to read this far, thanks for reading my life story!
Having limited experience in the phone flashing world, from researching it looks like the flashing process is something like:
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a recovery program
Use the recovery to flash rom/app
My understanding of the bootloader and why it needs to be unlocked is limited. I've done some research around it, and this is what I have found. The bootloader is the first thing that runs when the phone starts up, loads the kernel and the rom, and verifies that you have a legit recovery program. It needs to be unlocked so you can put a custom recovery on to your phone. Once you have that sorted, flashing roms from the recovery is a pretty straight forward process. If I'm wrong, please correct me, because this is what I have understood from looking around and I'm not confident about my understanding.
Unlocking the Bootloader On The Redmi Note 3
Having read on multiple sites, this looks like the biggest constraint when trying to flash a custom rom on the Redmi Note 3. This is because Xiaomi have locked the bootloader for this device, when most other phones do not have this problem. Most flashing guides for the Redmi Note 3 assume that the boodloader is unlocked or list it as a pre-requisite, so I'm unsure what path to take here. From research, it looks like there are 3 possible ways to move forward from here:
Official Bootloader Unlock
Unofficial Bootloader Unlock
Bypassing The Bootloader Unlock
Because my account is new, the following links aren't hyperlinked and in a good format due to permissions. Sorry! It'd be sweet if a mod could edit it.
1. Official Bootloader Unlock
This seems like the most legit way to unlock the bootloader. Apparently you just go to: endotmiuidotcom/unlock/ and apply for an unlock by using google translate and creating an account. People have reported response times taking over a month, not getting a successful application, or the unlocking process getting stuck at 50%. To me this doesn't sound appealing and I'm not too keen on waiting a month to find I'm unsuccessful in applying.
2. Unofficial Bootloader Unlock
This process is found here: endotmiuidotcom/thread-253680-1-1.html and looks to be a bit tedious. Apparently there is a high chance for a brick using this method, and some custom recoveries don't work well with it. My other concern is that if the brickrate is high, and this method was released around april, it could be possible that Xiaomi has made some further updates, further increasing the chance for a brick.
3. Bypassing The Bootloader Unlock
I found this process on a post from these forums, which then sourced a reddit post. The reddit post is pretty straight forward and can be found here: wwwdotredditdotcom/r/Xiaomi/comments/5611tg/psa_you_can_flash_twrp_and_subsequently_cm13/ .This process works by flashing a legit miui rom, but by flashing it with a modified recovery image, in particular, a custom recovery like TWRP. Having considered the three methods, this looks like the easiest way of getting it done.
My questions are: has anyone done any of these three methods successfully? What method do you recommend? Have I missed anything? Are there any other methods?
My understanding is once the bootloader is unlocked, you install TWRP. Then once that is installed you flash whatever rom you want, which leads into my next question. What is the best ROM to use?
It looks like the most viable roms are the CM roms. I've seen CM 13 and CM 14, are people running CM 13 instead of 14. Why? Is it more stable? Ideally I'm after the most functionality possible. Are there any other roms that you'd recommend flashing? When flashing roms are you supposed to do all the standard things that you would on other phones, factory wipe/cache wipe/davlik cache wipe, flash rom, flash gapps? I've also seen that CM needs firmware flashed before the rom, will this mess anything up and can it brick? Can you do all this stuff from TWRP with a locked bootlader (method 3)? I really like having notification badges too, what will I need to do for this to happen?
If you have read all of this, I really appreciate you taking the time. I hope I haven't broken any forum rules in the process.
dude,it's too much to read for people. I can't believe i read it,anyway.
about unlocking the bootloader process(I'm telling you about my experience):
---step 1 : you sign up for a mi account, choose your country and verify your phone number>login to your mi account on your device(remember to enable every feature on your mi account on your device, you can disable backup)> go to https://i.mi.com and check your device,it should be there> go to http://en.miui.com/unlock/ , write for example dear sir or madam, I'm an austrailian developer and I want to try and work on projects like cyanogen mods and other custom roms. sincerely,JaFranchise - alright, after finishing the writing go to translate.google.com and translate it to chinese, then paste on the form, then apply, you will confirm your request by entering the code that was sent to you via mi message --- for me it took about 3 to 4 hours to receive my confirmation.
---step 2 : first try this,if you stuck on 50% error, you will try step 3,so here is the instruction,
sign in to your mi account on your device(enable find device),also on i.mi.com(to check your device). enable developer options,OEM unlocking and USB debugging. > download the latest version of MIFlashUnlock tool and log into your account link : http://bigota.d.miui.com/miflashunlock/MiFlashUnlock_1.1.0317.1_en.zip> turn off your device and go to fastboot (press and hold volume - and power button at the same time), connect your device to your PC, click unlock(on MIFlashUnlock tool), after your bootloader successfully unlocked, click on reboot.
---step 3 : this is for kenzo devices(redmi note 3 pro - snapdragon650) - if you're using redmi note 3(mediatekX10), you should download the roms(stable and developer) according to your device
you need to switch from global stable to global developer rom, download the latest global developer rom on android lollipop(5.1). link : http://bigota.d.miui.com/6.8.18/miui_HMNote3ProGlobal_6.8.18_d0da79d09e_5.1.zip> after downloading the rom, rename the file name to Update.zip then copy to internal storage(in downloaded_rom folder).> open updater app, select choose update package, go to downloaded_rom folder and select Update.zip. It will verify your rom and install it. > download the latest global developer rom from en.miui.com/download-301.html , repeat the instruction or just simply download via updater > then follow step 2
I think,It's better you first unlock bootloader, then mention me in the comments to go through that(about cm and aosp roms and flashing instructions) process.
goodluck.
Thanks for your reply and for reading it all. So your advice is unlock the bootloader the official way. I know it's too much to read, that's why I put a tl;dr section, because I probably wouldn't read that much! The last thing I want to do is annoy people.
Cheers for specifically telling me what I'd need to write in the application, massive help. Maybe some people have been unsuccessful because they haven't said the right things.

It's alot easier than it sounds. The hardest part is probably getting the drivers on your computer installed properly to unlock bootloader/miflash. The good thing about this device is if you brick it, it's fairly simple to unbrick via the edl method but yea, official unlock bootloader - flash zcx twrp - make a backup - flash away

So it looks like official unlock is the way to go about things. Why ZCX version of TWRP?
ZCX is essentially the official TWRP, but with some extra stuff in it to allow it to support F2FS, if I'm not mistaken. Since you've decided to unlock your bootloader the official way, both ZCX and the official twrp are fine.

Redmi note 3 stuck in boot animation

Hi everyone, im new to XDA. But that's kinda beside the point.
I have a Redmi Note 3 with Snapdragon 650 and 2gb ram 16gb storage. I wanted to install lineage os/R.remix because im kinda bored of miui and wanted nougat. I did the following steps to install.
1. Unlocked bootloader via no-permission or hack method.
2. Installed TWRP latest as of 10-6-2017 thru Fastboot.
3. Wiped cache,dalvik and data
4. Flashed R.Remix nightly 10-6-17 and then Gapps.
In this step, I had a problem. It was giving me error:7 (xiaomi.verify.modem) and so I modded the rom (updater-script) and worked. It had the animation loop soflashed NON-HLOS modem binary thru Fastboot and flashed the original signed ROM. But, the problem persists. It's stuck in the boot animation and looping infinitely. I left it for 30min-1hr and still loops. What do I do now? Please help me in this regard. Till then, MIUI again
bro you forgot to flash lazy flasher at first boot in rom after installing twrp.

There's no need of lazyflasher on a custom Rom!

Don't flash that miui firmware from post above, it will relock your bootloader because you are not officially unlocked.
Best way to go is to flash latest global dev fastboot rom, unlock officially. This way you will have no problems with flashing nougat custom roms.
So, should I install the latest global developer rom? I checked yesterday it was v7.6.7 while latest global stable was 8.2.4 which I have currently installed. I also checked via fastboot OEM device-info and, yeah, bootloader locked.:crying: So, I should install the dev. Rom and ask for permission and then unlock, like, the official way? I'm waiting for the reply. Make it clear and I'll try it. Thnx.
Edit : I also somehow got TWRP uninstalled:crying::crying: I don't know if this unexpected or was doomed to happen but yeah, again, just saying.
I just asked for permissions to unlock and..... Surprise!!! I got the permission in 5 minutes!!!
I feel kinda sad for the people who are waiting for more than 21 days...

How to root Zenfone 3 Zoom (ZE553KL)

Full credit to redditor qrtippadfhjlzcbmm for the instructions, I'm just reposting here. Link to reddit post at end.
I successfully rooted my Zenfone 3. It seemed worth posting since there weren't really any posts I could find verifying a recovery image. [for clarification that was from the post, not me magicmanfk]
1. Unlock the boot loader with the instructions / app from Asus
2. Download TWRP. Specifically twrp-3.1.0-0-Z01H-20170408.img ** [edit: also rename to twrp.img once downloaded]
3. Download SuperSU.
4. Reboot to fastboot by rebooting the phone, and pressing the down arrow during the unlock screen.
5. Flash the recovery image `fastboot flash recovery twrp.img`
6. I had to power cycle the phone completely to get TWRP running.
7. Reboot to recovery. If TWRP ever asks you something about not making the system read only don't swipe! Say not now.
8. Install SuperSU with steps 7 - 10 from the SuperSU site
** I'm generally wary about downloading recovery images from random places, but I found a link posted by shakalaca on the Asus forums (translated), so it seemed worth trying out.

Have you attempted to flash the newest ROM yet since being bootloader unlocked? Not sure if we can do it in TWRP or need stock recovery to do it.
Any roms available for the zenfone 3 xoom ? I would love some stock roms lol

I have not personally done this because of exactly what you are asking. I believe you need stock recovery to do it, but this is from scouring what other people have done and I don't have a link. I'm waiting for the nougat update before doing it.

Not yet! I'm hoping there will be soon though. It may help if there was a forum for the device, so if you haven't yet please make a post in the Device forum request page for it!

You should be able to extract the stock recovery out of previous ROMs and flash it.
I'm with you though, waiting for Nougat update. Not bothering with this last ROM from late May that added pretty much nothing.
Hi. I'm the person from reddit.
I'm sure it's (some how) possible to apply an update after running this process. I realize now I should have done this, and then applied the May update, but I didn't. I will try to make it a point to post some instructions on how to do it when it comes out because I'm struggling with out Nougat.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the garbage Asus notification bar, and get the default Android one?
Do you know if you can relock the bootloader? Just curious

No. Ended up returning Bootloader unlocked phone for a new phone. Waiting until I see others successfully unlock BL and flash stock ROMs.

You can get the stock recovery from the converting cm to ww thread. The image there contains the recovery.IMG file.
Hi, I can not run the root, because by using the official unlock software, something is unsuccessful ... By running the software comes out a "unlocked" message without there being any wipe or restart of the smartphone. .. Does anyone have the same problem? I also tried to make a "factory reset" from recovery but the problem remains ...

Can I do the same procedure on the Nougat ?

Yes, but I'd use the latest TWRP version and magisk instead of SuperSU (It gets the job done).
Also, update to the latest firmware so you can get the latest security patches.
Hi, i bought this phone.
Also you have a light halo in bottom of screen?
Thanks

How To Guide Downgrade US OEM (DE2117) Android 12 firmware to Android 11 BEFORE installing Lineage!

Lineage installation on N200 REQUIRES that you are running Android 11 or phone will soft loop after installing the Lineage boot.img
If you are updated to Android 12 firmware and want to install Lineage, you MUST downgrade first to:
DE2117 OEM Android 11 FINAL OTA
WARNING: This WILL erase all user data.
1. Place the firmware .zip file in the user root of internal phone storage.
2. Sideload OnePlus firmware Downgrade Tool on phone and use tool to flash the Android 11 firmware.
There is an Emergency Firmware install tool that OnePlus posted to the OP forum that does NOT check root status when the need to downgrade back to A11 was first acknowledged due to modem issue with first A12 OTA release.
This file was removed in a few days when they posted the official Downgrade tool replaced it.
I have used this tool to upgrade DE2117 C_16 to DE2117 C_17 while rooted and the built in upgrade tool failed at 37%.
Nice, first thanks for the hard work you're putting in. Second, is there an advantage to converting first to DE2117 then installing lineage as opposed to just installing lineage from DE2118 that you know of? I know in the other post you answered my other question stating that the Lineage will install on either so I wasn't sure if I'd get any benefit from starting over and converting my DE2118. TIA

Lineage is using own kernel and boot.img on A11 so in the short run it is not going too make any difference, but when Lineage moves forward to A12 the OEM Firmware has newer drivers and is updated sooner, has more OEM features and bugfixes as well as no carrier bloatware.
It is possible that OP will neuter the Carrier firmware with an OTA update to prevent cross flashing device away from the Carrier rom in the next OTA update by preventing fastbootd from flashing the us oem from a carrier phone.
They have already removed fastboot boot command to boot a boot image without flashing it for test before you flash and to allow Magisk to make a backup of the original boot.img before adding Magisk.
I would convert NOW, before they decide to slam the door on this ability with a future OTA that will not allow you to downgrade and prevent this as they are under contract with the carriers to not allow this to be done.
Ok, thank you for the explanation. Guess I'll back everything up and convert it.

This worked perfectly after following your convert guide and upgrading to 12. Downgraded back to 11 so I could install lineageOS. Thanks again!
This reddit post has a link to an English version of the downgrade apk which makes it a little easier.

Did you remove root (Restore boot.img) and then factory reset?
You will loose all data doing this anyway.
I m trying as well .. but stuck with verification failed message just as scanman0 I m on stock android12 no root if anyone know how to fix it ... please assit
I just downgraded. Make sure you remove root via magisk. Then proceed to rollback to Android 11. Everything worked fine. I'll install lineage tonight when I get home.

I did not have to remove root. I used the version posted that does not check for root but maybe there's a different reason.
Does the downgrade apk have to be sideloaded via ADB?

Just place apk in phones working directory, same path where your downloads folder is. Then install from there like any other apk and run. I also kept the FW file in the same directory but I'm not sure if that was necessary.
So, just to confirm, I press "local install" and select the firmware zip and it closes? Is the tool supposed to do anything else or am I good to flash LineageOS?

Ummm if I remember correctly hit local install and then it will prompt to point towards which FW to use. After you hit it, it will go back to the previous screen, I think verify and unpack it, then install it. Mine did appear like it was doing nothing after picking the FW and so I picked again which screwed things up so just wait after picking, it should start.
After its done it will give a message saying to restart phone I think for it to take effect, then after you restart it should ask to wipe phone, then restart again and you'd be in A11 presumably. Once in A11 your good to follow the normal procedure to install Lineage. This is all from memory though so I MAY have missed something but I don't think I did.

When you say "screwed things up" what do you mean? How did it effect the install?

Nothing major, caused the UI to glitch out and made it seem like the process was stuck at 81% but when I closed the app and tried to do it again it jumped to 100 and said to restart the device.
I've downgraded a second time (I'm very indecisive on which OS I want to use) and that one went as expected since I knew to give it a second to start doing its thing.

Weird, for me it just closes the app and does nothing, both the official and emergency ones. I even tried adding it to magisk's deny-list.
But I just restored the boot image via magisk (didn't restart) and it works now...

Yes I factory restored the phone and tried again. Still fails every time
Has anybody had any luck figuring out the verification failed message? I too have tried both the official and emergency apps, of course I can't read the actual message in what I presume is Chinese, but it doesn't do anything and the other version says verification failed. Have not rooted. Kind of at a loss right now and all I want to do is install Lineage! I've already got my unlock token from OnePlus, but my understanding is that the phone still needs to be on A11 before installling Lineage.
