Photo quality - Xiaomi Mi A1 Real Life Review

Nice

I just got my MI A1 as an upgrade for my 4 years old Nexus 5 daily driver. First impressions in Daylight the MI A1 outperforms the Nexus 5, but in low light the lack of OIS and relatively small 1.25 um pixel size means the A1 struggles a lot. Even getting a sharp focus is slow comparing with my Nexus 6P which has laser autofocus.
In comparison my Nexus 5 has OIS and 1.4 um pixels, and my Nexus 6P has 1.55 um pixels.
Taking into account the cost of the MI A1 however, this phone is a tip top performer and I have no compliants for what I paid. Very happy with it.

Update 1: After 1 week with the device now I have to say that although daylight photos turn out great, low light shots are abysmal. Still usable in certain cases but very slow

The cameras are capable of taking excellent pictures. Unfortunately not every picture is excellent. Blurred photos are fairly common.
Hopefully a fix will come with updated software. I blame the software for the problem because a downloaded camera app is much better. Unfortunately the 2X setting doesn't work with that app.

Open Camera is the name of the app. I would have used it as default if the dual camera was usable.

Disclaimer: I always shoot with HDR+ on my Nexus 6P.
In good lighting the MI A1 with HDR produces results comparable to the 6P in terms of dynamic range, sharpness and saturation. However, Xiaomi's HDR processing is noticeably not as refined as Google's on the 6P. HDR photos can seem slightly exaggerated on the A1 when you compare it side by side with the same shot taken on the 6P.
This isn't noticeable if you judge the photos on their own merit, which are very respectable and will impress you on the first shot almost every time.
In short I would say that the MI A1 has inspired enough confidence for me to carry it around full time as my daily driver and main camera for weekdays and weekends, but I still bring my 6P out when going on trips/vacations for shooting video (DJI Osmo mobile + Nexus 6P).
Here's an example:
A) Taken with HDR on MI A1

B) Same shot taken with HDR+ on Nexus 6P

I have a question about the camera, some people said that HDR picture takes times, about 1 to 2 seconds.
Is that correct?

Yes, HDR takes about a second

Great Photos using it for 4 days now.
Hi evryone, I am coming from the Moto G2 XT1068 which was my daily driver for 4 years and using clips lens on the camera and the picture quality was decent .. But I am amazed how the Mi A1 outperforms some of the over-priced same spec smartphones in its range.
I am sharing some of the shots taken from Mi A1 during my Nepal trip.

Disappointed, really,i came from mi5 to mi a1.i thought it'll be better since it has dual camera, new software, new features they claiming has better camera compared to oneplus 5 even iPhone 7,but still waaay better on mi5 even with lineage os which is known as downgrading the camera quality.
Front facing camera is the worst part, ironically i sell my mi5 to get this phone, damn!

Yea, no. Those aren't photos taken on your Mi A1. A simple reverse-image search shows you ripped it off 500px - "Portrait of a Sadhu by Ashraful Arefin". I'm not allowed to post links but you can find it with a google search.
The photos were taken on a DSLR, over a year ago.
Just why?

This is actual footage of portrait mode but when taking photos instantly its quite often resulting blurry pictures

Another portrait mode, quite impressive but you need to hold the phone really steady

Blurry pictures when taking picture on moving object

Outdoor shots are pretty good and HDR does a good job without making the pictures look "cartoonish" which is sometimes the case. Once you take it indoors there's a rapid drop-off in quality, I find. Going out to dinner tonight and will try to make some shots in the restaurant to test.
Turning on portrait mode seems to zoom in on the object automatically, which is a bit strange. Anyone else have this?
Manual mode is a bit disappointing as the maximum exposure time is 1/60 second, which means if you want a usable low-light shot you still need to bump up the ISO quite a bit. Hope they can fix this in an update.

Just tried latest HTC camera from apkmirror (Sept. 28 version) and it shoots MUCH better pictures! Indoors pictures and selfies are MUCH sharper. You get nice depth-of-field shots even without portrait mode and it nicely focuses on items the Mi camera had trouble focusing on.
Camera works fully without root, just install the apk. I highly recommend you give this a try!

Photo Quality is good in daylight. Shutter Speed is excellent. on using HDR a bit slow. but hey it is a mid range device.

It's funny how smartphone cameras haven't really evolved the last years and all it takes are manufactures either ****ing up or restricting their camera by full purpose.
Try to compare daylight pictures with Huawei P20 (an almost 4 digit phone) - and laught how horribly bad their pictures are.
Xiaomi's afterprocessing in their Redmi Series is minimal compared to that (sometimes manufacturers not having their focus on the camera is actually a good thing).
All it takes is a good Google Camera Port and you're set for good low light pictures as well.
Can you try this one here with Auto HDR+ and Enhanced HDR+ (Forced)?

I'll be honest, it's pretty bad, frequently off focus, poor low light, lack of stabilization, but maybe fine for the price range I guess
Redmi Note 5 is probably the better choice for photo quality
Nonetheless, I think updates might help. At least I hope

In daylight conditions pictures turns out good with good focus , saturation levels etc. But color reproduction needs work and in low light conditions noise is quite apparent. Portrait is like 7/10. Selfies turn out good after the recent update, 8.5/10.
P.S. For stabilized videos I use nokia camera app and its upto the mark .
Low-light picture quality is abominable. Zoom tears images, there is a lot of noise. Images in daylight are pretty decent. For this price range, the camera quality is justifiable (I suppose). I have a Moto G4 Plus and it takes amazing photos compared to this device. If you remove the portrait mode, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has nothing over the Moto G4 Plus camera.
Hope to see changes in future updates.
Yes, pretty disappointed with the camera performance. I should have got the RN5 instead but since I already got this, I'll stick with it as taking pictures is not the main thing for me on this phone. Still, the quality is far off from the various paid reviews.

For sure Gcam pics are better. I have been using it from past one week and will sure never turn back to stock camera.
Moreover with Gcam you also get additional features like panorama , ar stickers and google lense.
Can anyone show the photo quality difference with gcam and the stock one?

Earlier the photos taken from Asus were not that great as that of redmi note 5pro, but now with Google cam installed these are now coming extra ordinary, thanks for the team made possible without rooting the phone.

I installed Google camera after enabling api through fastboot but not much big effect is seen from Snapdragon camera
For example I did portrait mode on Google camera but it takes much time than Snapdragon camera and also showing images of low resolution and small megapixel (my camera support 16 MP but it showed images from 8 MP and allow motion is not working and hdr+enhanced is allowed but not working, the camera got stuck every time it is turned on
Okay at well lit conditions, not good at low light
During daylight, the rear camera photos are good.
But the phone doesn't focus properly on close objects.
The low light camera is bad. A lot of noise, less light detection, slow focus, etc.
The video quality (1080p) during day is good. But the device takes time to focus during a video recording.

The camera (software) of the Mi A2 is once again a disappointment, Xiaomi still isn't even close to the competition.
Here's a medium/low light composition (100% crop) taken with my old Redmi Note 3 Pro (Samsung Sensor) and the Mi A2.
I've taken more samples with the A2, hoping for better sharpness and contrast and selected the best ones - but only that single image on the Redmi Note 3 Pro.
The Redmi Note 3 (as well as the Note 4X and Mi A1 with Google HDR+ Camera) easily outperform the Mi A2 in a few hundred shots I've taken so far in all situations, except for:
- Daylight action shots (still close but in most situations the shorter aperture helps)
- Extremely low light (the Redmi Note 3 still has the edge on sharpness and focus accuracy, but the A2 wins with a bit less noise and better contrast / dynamic range)

That sounds like my experience as well. I'm currently comparing this phone (for my dad) against my Nexus 5X, and straight out of the box images even with HDR just can't be compared.
However, I specifically bought this device for the price point + androidOne combo. With the google camera port and camera2api enabled, this is just about on-par with the Nexus 5X. I'd almost consider getting this for myself!
I noticed in your Redmi sample, you had used a google cam port. Try a google cam port on the A2, it's quite the improvement. I'll have opportunity to post some samples in the next few days, since I just got the A2 yesterday
Photo samples below:
Mi A2 Test Photos [Google Camera Port]
Particular characteristics noticed:
- autofocus isn't always on-point if you just shoot from the hip (aka double-tap power, then immediately single tap volume button); for best results you should wait like a second to lock focus
- some google camera ports allow you to tweak highlight and shadow saturation; explore around!
- colours aren't 100% accurate, but could just be a simple white-balance adjustment in snapseed, etc.
Front camera is better than rear camera
Why is the rear camera produces 8mp pictures? I just opened the camera app and took the shot.

Maby you are on "low quality" mode.
Go to the camera settings and select the "high quality" option.
Both cameras have its own settings, so if you want to change the resolution of the frontal camera, you are gonna have to swipe to that camera and then acces to the settings.
I hope it works

Why there is so much difference between mia1 portrait and mia2 portrait ? i like mi a1 blur co'z they look close to natural like dslr blur and a2 blur seems to artificial why?
Some amazing shots with the stock cam:
xxx.flickr.com/gp/[email protected]/97pfu5
Honest review: I agree with @Benjamin_L
My previous phone was Redmi 3S. With Google Camera it produced more sharper images than Mi A2 with Google Camera. It looks like there's some kind of pixel binning thing happening even with the primary sensor. Edges are not crisp/sharp. Dynamic range is good though with GCam ports in every phone it no longer matters.
Only place where it wins from other phones is its low light performance due to the aperture. Otherwise the camera is not really that great, as speculated in every blog. Sure, in stock camera comparisons with other phones, Mi A2 is the better one. However once we move to GCam, other phones are at par with Mi A2, in fact better, in Daylight.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 9's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

It's more about personal preference. Note 9 wins in pure hardware (both vs pixel 2 and pixel 3), but google has a really impressive AI for the pictures processing. The thing is, processing can take you that far before it starts to show it's drawbacks. The note 9 just relies on strong hardware to extract the maximum possible without over-processing thus leading to a vastly different approach compared to google (and to some extend huawei too).
Lowlight performance can be improved with a working google camera modd. Check out this comparison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZSW6Y3FTC4

1, am I been crazy thinking of switching is it much of a upgrade
2, is the xperia 1 camera as good as the note 9
3, also is the display as good as the note 9
4, are the stereo speaker as good
Only asking as I haven't tried the xperia 1 but might order it tomorrow I've read there is a few bugs here and there but sony are normally quite good with there updates so can see them getting sorted
Seen alot of youtubers saying the camera isnt all that good and is the xperia 1 a upgrade from the xperia xz premium because I had that phone and loved it
Thanks
I did not own a Note 9 so i will not be able to make a comparison.
About the camera, I like it, but you could not like it like a lot of people. Photos are detailled but noisy. So it dépends if you prefer washed out but clean photo or the grainy feel of a raw photo (with some process still). The app have some limitation, like no HDR when you set the focus manualy. Low light photo are natural and "as you see", not like night mode of other brands that let you see in the dark like in bright daylight. You can do that with the sony too, but the old way, in manual with long exposure and a tripod.
One thing I'm disapointed with is the X2 lens. x2.5 or x3 would have been slightly more usefull, also you can't choose it in manual mode except by pinching to zoom at x2. And also, it's not used in low light condition.
But in overall I was impressed by this phone and kept it after trying P30Pro, Nokia 9 pureview, Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, for me photo are what I'm looking for on a phone, for me P30 is not better for photo (well, if you want a x6 it is of course) but different. I think Samsung is maybe more like the Chinese brand with more color pop and more post processed photo (it's not bad, it's different, I do not make a judgement here). Also, the note 10 is around the corner, maybe wait for the test of this one too.

I'm assuming all the niggly bits with camera can be solved with updates as sony have a good track record with update fixes?
Amoled note 9 it is low end next to the Xperia 1.
Xperia 1 have BEST display market.
Xperia 1 speakers have excellent quality and sound quite loud.
the camera is also better and uses camera technology to track eyes and 10 fps

Thanks I'll take a look just everyone says the samsung displays are the best (displaymate)
my two cents - from Ex-Note user
1. Sound - Xperia Speaker is definitely more clear and has no distortion
2. Display - Both are good (No notch but both have bezel - In the race for all screen these two are not competing). Note 9 is definitely more brighter but the colors are just too much and over saturated, you can switch to the standard colour profile but still not accurate. Xperia is above average for brightness but the screen colour is just awesome and pleasing.
3. Camera - Both are not the best (But Note 9 has potential for GCAM mod, Xperia till date doesn't - Don't want to jinx it, but it may be a while before we get it either). The camera does have very accurate colors and the 21:9 video profile looks great on cinemapro. The camera basically comes down to your own taste as someone mentioned Samsung has very pleasing artificial colours, Xperia is more true to life and also has the super awesome AF for people photography. But note 9 has the variable aperture on its side
4. Battery again above average really depends on your usage, i do get a days worth battery when i am at work and less when travelling and using the display more (media consumption)
5. The LDAC and other codes are great when connecting to audio devices which use them (I am loving the WH1000MX3). Samsung i believe has only aptX and SBC (for most general Bluetooth cans).
6. S-Pen : something sony can never win, so if it was a part of your daily use, you will definitely miss it, i know i did when i moved from the Note 8 to a iPhone before the Xperia 1.
My colleague has a note 9. So could compare hardware, also i had the note 8, so the difference in usability is something i can comment on.
Hope this helps, overall both are great phones and the SD 845/Exynos and SD 855 - has marginal performance difference in real life use.

Like for all phones, anything can be done with updates, the only thing to know is if it's treated as a problem or a feature. Mate 10 Pro I had was really heavy on post process and thus the photo were really not realistic at all. Some liked it, some didn't. There were no update to correct it, even if mate 9 and mate 20 were far better and lighter on the post process.
So it's Always difficult to know if the future will change anything when you don't like something. For example, the fact that hdr/IA is disabled when focus is set by touching the screen where we want, and the fact that you can't disable IA manually without using the touch to focus thing, I cant possibly think they did this without thinking about it. So, it's the result of whole design process that lead to this choice. It's then hard to think they will change the way the app work because they already thought about it. (Luckily since there is a two step photo command button, you can do like with a classic camera to do the focus where you want without touching the screen, but it's not "smartphone user" friendly). Ho, also you can't tap to focus if you enable capture when smile detected.
Well, this long text to say maybe they will change the way it works, maybe not, it's not what we can call a bug.
About the screen, it's nice. I can't say about the samsung's one. A lot of labo test and review seems to say the S10 phone have a slithly better screen. It's true that out of the box the white balance is off on the Xperia 1, but you can change it to your liking. From what I saw in some YouTube video, the smasung panels are less natural and more Poppy colors, but we can't know for sure how the settings are set on both phone. It's like comparing two tv on a mall without having access to the settings to properly calibrate them. My advice here is more to not take what you see on YouTube like the graal. The screen is good and can be well calibrated. Doing comparison between screen is Always difficult without proper Tools, so a normal user will not see a lot of difference f not comparing the two side by side, and even then, the difference can be due only to the settings.
In any case, the Xperia is nice with the WH-1000XM3 bundled for 999€. Only the phone, or the phone and the 60€ cover for this price is really too high without the 350€ headphone bundled in. What I mean here, is that this phone value is more around 700€ than 1000€. It's a great phone I will keep for 2 years or more, but not better than others for the 700€ mark, just different.

The official sony website say (in the disclamer in the Bottom of the specification page):
Xperia 1 does not cover the BT.2020 colour space in full
8 bit display with 2 bit software smoothing
So any review/website that talk about this phone without mentionning it can't be taken that seriously. This one is more like an advertisement taking line by line the specification sheet of the phone.

Samsung can not compete in quality neither on TV nor on mobile screens against Sony.
Xperia 1 use Rescue technology and converts sdr to hdr etc is technology of the Sony ag9 by af9 BEST TV market .
Samsung on TV makes QLED is a copy of Sony's triluminus and on phones does Amoled pentile poor in subpixels tecnology 8 bits sdr

I quoted the official specification before: not 10bit but 8+2. HDR but not all the BT2020 range.
I can try to find my microscope to look at the screen, because I can't find any review that show the pannel type.

From the link provided by @xzpremium1976 the pannel is 67.4% of BT.2020, 99.63% of DCI-P3 and 148.4% of BT.709. That's still pretty neat.
They advertise the ability to play files using this color gamut space I think. A classic SDR screen while just be grey-ish when playing a BT.2020 video (I it's what happen on my computer screen). And they still write down on their specification sheet that's it's not complete range reproduction. But well, untill not so long, screen didn't even reproduce all the RGB color range, and now you have a full DCI-P3 coverage.
Not related to the screen or camera. But I hightly recommend people considering this phone to try it. The 21/9 ratio phone is … unexpedly good in hand. I mean, I really had a hard time with the P30pro with its 19.5:9 ratio coming from a 18.5:9 ratio. But it was more about the curved edge (front and back). Plus a flat screen is less eye catching, but, for me, far better for content, since curved edge distort the image and create ray of light. It's the same with Samsung edge phone. Well, matter of taste here. But really, trying it is important here, I was bluffed, I never expected buying a Sony phone and was just trying it.
