Low light - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Real Life Review

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 9's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

Not great like p20 pro

It takes amazing low light pictures. Pitch dark images look like daylight, Best I have seen.

I don`t have this model but am interested in the topic as well because I would like to buy Galaxy note 9, and a camera is one of the things I pay most attention to when buying a phone!

But I agree that Mate 20 pro is amazing and the triple lens system at the back is just DOPE.

Share your thoughts after using the device.

I'm satisfyied with results even coming from a pixel 2 xl with night sight. Note 9 has better overall results and more realistic photos.

Thank you very much!
It seems that you know much about gadgets for taking pictures, can you advise me on any really excellent camera ? What manufacturer or maybe a particular model may be the best one to buy?

Does the Note 9 still have a weird orange tint in really low light shots?

In my experience low light pic are pretty good, not as great as a night sight but decent

I would say that I am not that good with cameras yes I have an Canon EOS 80D which is old camera an it doesn't support 4K. The thing is currently now in market there is a lot of options(Cameras).
This blogs can help you in comparing the brands and different models they offer.

It's more about personal preference. Note 9 wins in pure hardware (both vs pixel 2 and pixel 3), but google has a really impressive AI for the pictures processing. The thing is, processing can take you that far before it starts to show it's drawbacks. The note 9 just relies on strong hardware to extract the maximum possible without over-processing thus leading to a vastly different approach compared to google (and to some extend huawei too).

Lowlight performance can be improved with a working google camera modd. Check out this comparison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZSW6Y3FTC4

The noise amount on these is indistinguishable. Haven't been looking up for a new gadgets for a several years and looks like the future is now.

Huawei photo quality vs. Samsung's flagship photo quality

Huawei photo quality vs. Samsung's flagship photo quality
Hello XDA Huawei users,
Is there a Huawei phone that makes better photos than Samsung flagship devices like S8/S8+/Note8 ?
If yes could You tell me the model name?
Haven't you seen any photos of p9, mate 9 and mate 10 series??
It's difficult to answer this question because the quality of both phones is on a level where it is also a matter of taste. I had the Galaxy S8 and I'm now using the mate 10 pro.
In my opinion, the mate 10 pro has the better camera for pictures. Not only the second monochrome camera is a big plus, it also features a portrait mate, which the S8 lacks (but note 8 has it(ok, the s8 has a kind a portrait mode, but it's nowhere near the solution in the note 8)). The ease of use is comparable, both are really quick, and have a fast focus. In general, I like the pictures of the mate more, but sometimes the mate ones look more artificial because of the amount of contrast. in low light the mate preserves more colors and is less noisy, the S8 might be a bit sharper. Both phones could need a bit of hdr+ magic, the quality of googles Pixel phones is in another league.
When it comes to videos the s8 is much better. Mate 10 lacks dynamic range and in 1080p 60fps it looks like 720p.

Yes, definitely. They don't have manual controls so it's less fun. But it's hard to take bad pictures with the pixels.
Depends on what "quality" is for you.
Pixel 2 have the best technical quality while the mate 10 have a more "real camera" feel and controls.
Picture quality (technical) could have been better on mate 10 but overall it's the best cam on the market .
My 2 cent.

Thanks for your input!
Does it mean that Samsung S8/S8+/Note8 will NOT make better pics than Huawei and Google Pixel 2?
Depends on you personal preference.
Me personally I never liked Samsung camera's
Of those 3 I will rank mate 10 first not because it has the highest quality (it's not bad in any way) but because it is the most "real camera" like in terms of controls and user experience.
Pixel 2 is great but lacks control..
And the portrait mode, seems like most "photographers" don't know the difference between out of focus and bokeh...
None of the are perfect but Note 8's portrait/bokeh look horrible and fake.

In my opinion the regular Mate 10 is the best as it still uses 16:9, has the headphone jack, and the front fingerprint sensor for easy unlocking when sitting on your desk at work, plus no worries about any burn in because it uses an LCD panel (which I feel is better than Amoled). Of course it really depends on what you like and/or need! Other than these obvious differences everything else is the same...I think!
I had S7 Edge and bought Mate 10 Pro, for me Mate have great camera in all segments than S7 which is normal. But S7 takes better portrait shots, with Mate when i take pictures of my son his face looks so dark and with a lot of contrast.

Well, You must consider that Your son maybe black.
So which one makes better photos? Cause I'm getting the feeling that you'e not sure
And relax, Your son is the most important person in the world, not a phone.
Why 16:9 is better in Your (all XDA users) opinon? Or isnt?
Mate 10 regular better than Mate 10 Pro? How come?

Selfie quality

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Unless you have really good light, selfie's aren't the best. Ridiculous amount of face smoothing I just can't seem to get rid of. Even with the settings turned off, it just does smoothing so it looks terrible.
Rear camera is good.
I have a big issue with my front camera...
When I try to take a selfie, if behind the subject there's a light(natural or artificial), the photo become blurry.
I compared my device with one exposed in a store and only my device has this issue(the settings were the same on both devices)....
Anyone has/had the same problem? If yes, how did you solve it?
I've already tried a factory reset but the problem still remain...
Gcam mod on the Note 9 takes considerably better selfie pix than the stock camera. No smoothing and a lot more detail.
Unfortunately the selfies are terrible. I have tried Android pie on the note 9 and I can say with that OS upgrade the selfie cam does get marginally better thank goodness.
The selfie cam in my opinion is bad quality. The photos are usually blurry except you are stood very still and have very good light. I think perfomance is not good enough for a €/£1000+ device and hopefully a software upgrade will fix the issue particularly the time it takes to focus
The gcam port makes the quality so much better

I have this phone for a day and I'm experiencing the same problem. All selfies look unnatural. Everything is too smooth, and blurry, just bad quality I think.
The only complain I have about the front camera is the angle. With my old LG G6 I could easily get the whole family in while talking with relatives and friends on video call.
With the Note 9 I can barely get myself in.

Quality
Selfie quality was superb in oreo 8.1, I don't see much quality after updating the phone to Android 9 or 10 versions
The self-camera on the Note 9 is actually pretty good quality when compared to most laptop and 3rd party USB Webcams. I have use it for video conferencing via Zoom, MS Teams and Cisco. All of the time the picture quality from my Note 9's selfie-camera seems to be much better quality than others who are using a laptop or traditional USB webcam

Can you give me an advice? Which phone has better battery life and camera than s10 li

was determined to buy the s10 lite but I saw some comparison videos on the camera and now I'm changing my mind. The photos look "washed out" compared to other phones in the same price range.
I thought about: xiaomi mi 10 lite, one plus nord, honor 20 pro, huawei p30.
Do you recommend me? (without curved edges)
THANK YOU!!!

S10lite has a great camera
I've previously owned Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus devices. All were good in their own way. However, truth be told, the stability, battery life, speed of the S10 Lite is quality, such as are Samsung products overall. I still have my Mi 8 device, which I use for work, it's ok and Miui 12 is cool, but battery life suffered. Huawei, well to be honest it is slightly like a lesser version of Xiaomi, and as Honor is based upon Huawei there are close similarities. OnePlus make good phones. I haven't had the Nord but out of the 2 I'd still lean towards the S10.
I was always someone who liked rooting my device, playing around with kernels etc. You cannot do this with the S10. But, for me, this one time I'm stopped doing it from a practical sense (i.e. it is way too much effort!) I honestly do not miss it! Camera is good, I can still side load everything I want, good storage, great battery life, what's not to like?

I am crazy go from Mi 10 to Poco X3?!

So i have Mi 10 for like 2 months and so far i am so disappointed from it. Mainly from camera which is not as good as i expected (in my opinion Mi 9 which i had before had much better camera and overall results from all 3 sensors) miui 12 is terrible and only good thing i can see on my Mi 10 is battery, 90Hz amoled display and maybe sound. I drop Mi 9 beacuse of super good offer on Mi 10 and i thougth it will be great but its not. Couple days ago i bought for my girlfriend POCO X3 and when i see what that phone can do for fraction of price of my Mi 10. I mean display is not amoled but panel is look so good and 120Hz si awesone, battery life is exellent and camera in my opinion is almost the same as Mi 10 wich for the price of POCO X3 its just hilarious. So i am thinking last couple days to drop Mi 10 and get POCO X3 because its just much better value.. I am crazy?!

How i wrote a down on Foto section, the camera setup is trash. The 108mp main camera cant take normal fotos, cos its washing out the background, from 5 meters too. And its ****, if i want, that everything is sharp on the foto. 13mp wide is also bad. 2mp macro ist a joke. Sreen is ok, processor is ok. Im want back my Mi8. It was a super phone. Good Fotos, good size. Fast enough.

Yes exactly!!! Camera is the most disappointment. Sometimes it nail the photo but 80% of time photo looks bad.
Here is good example. I had Mi 9 before Mi 10, photos are super sharp thanks to laser AF and good sensor. Mi 10 just focus on middle a rest of image is just bad.

The Problem is the big hype around bokeh. Now this is the trend. And when the Mi10 have a normal main camera and extra the portrait for bokeh , than i dont care about wide, cos with Gcam i can make from 9 foto very good wide. My opinion is, that 2 good camrea is enough. But now phone manufacturer racing, that who can put more camera tje backside of the phone. I hope, that trend will changes amd coming normalisation in this theme.

You guys are on crack if you think Mi 10 is not good. Like photography part of phone I never comment because I would pay serious money for phone with no cam, or some whatever cam, just give me performance and battery. And this phone does those 2 better than most phones. I don't understand how can you put Poco X3 in same category with Mi 10. Yeah 120 Hz make it feel like Mi 10 but under the hood Mi 10 is beast on it's own and this OLED screen is too notch even tho is 1080p, I compared it head to head with OnePlus 8 Pro and minor differences could be seen.

MIUI is custom ROM, I am kinda ancient when it comes to XDA and I remember how MIUI started and we all old heads were hyped to see company take over community work and put it into their phones out of box. Now OnePlus latest updates made their phones lookalike Samsung UI, so what you had on your OnePlus is history. And on almost any phone if you like stock android experience so you can tweak and tinker it AOSP ROM was the way or som custom ROM. So the charm of Android phones is all you need to like is hardware and you make your own looks and feels out of vast majority of ROM. I know some phone lack of even Root support or Bootloader is locked forever. But I kinda cringe when I see people on XDA complaining about looks of Phone and it's software when they can tweak it and being on XDA implies you want to tinker. Just have common sense people, don't be lazy and complain.

Not my point at all! I said MIUI doesn't feel like the original rom the phone came with, which means: it has alot of problems, alot of lags, animation stuttering and so on! The hardware might be good but the software totally kills the experience for me. As for tryingcustom roms, I am currently on a custom rom, but those still have some issues. Also when I buy a phone I expect it to work all good out of the box: hardware and software. And for xiaomi this is the first premium flagship I have tried that the hardware feels like a flagship but the phone feels like my old redmi note 5(last non flagship device I had)

i'm with the others who think the mi10 camera is pretty good. what you said about "focus on middle and rest of image is just bad", well that's bokeh. REAL OPTICAL BOKEH, not processed/faked ones: something that's not possible with smaller sensors on phones typically, and approaching what you can get with much larger dedicated cameras. It's not a fault, but an achievement, IMHO.
What might have also impressed you the wrong way is probably the characteristic cold tones of the Samsung sensors compared to the much warmer (lab tested pleasing) tones of the Sony sensors. Though Samsung sensors would typically appear sharper overall even with comparable resolution, never mind between mi9 and 10. Sharpness and resolution should be hands down in mi 10's favor. Getting GCam should help a lot with dynamic range issues in difficult lighting (you seem to have unfavorable/difficult lightings for both of the Mi10 samples compared to the mi9, which were both shot with much better lighting conditions).

Cameras suck man, suck big time. My old pixel 2 has a way wayy better camera(which is a 3year old device). And even though I use gcam, sometimes that is not stable, and whats the point of a 700$ phone if alot of stuff is not stable and keeps lagging?

i'm with the others who think the mi10 camera is pretty good. what you said about "focus on middle and rest of image is just bad", well that's bokeh.

Well for that real optical bokeh.. Here is link for two shots. Same conditions, no filtr, just point focus and shoot. iPhone XS vs Mi 10.

iPhone did much better job with bokeh then Mi 10 did.

Question Image quality not great

Took pictures of red roses I bought for my wife. They are pink. My old Note 10 reproduce color perfectly. Not sure how much I am loving this new phone. Anyone else notice this?
Pink?
Same roses but taken across the room and zoomed in.
...
Might be overexposed. That can happen with any cam. Not sure exactly what that is. A contrast curve of it give you a better idea of what went wrong.
The N10+ grabs good images. Samsung really hasn't provided any great reasons to upgrade from the N10+ in over 3 years. In fact doing away with expandable storage decreased to usability of the devices significantly. As with the N20U-S22U the S23U's form factor and weight sucks compared to the N10+.
It's funny as new vids are appearing with people advocating buying the N10+ instead of a new midrange Samsung and even the S23U. Actual performance gains in normal usage in over 3 years are very minimal. If you compare the N10+ to the N9 the speed increase is quit noticeable though. The N10+ does well with games, the N9 slowness is very apparent.
Rather disheartening.
Those images look bad. Camera issues and display issues, maybe a defective device?

Yes, it might help a little, but won't solve the issue.
I ran some picture tests yesterday (stock camera, 50 and 200Mpx / GCam), and the stock camera app is producing whiter pictures than reality looks like. GCam was slightly more accurate in term of colours.
I disabled the scene optimizer on the stock camera app and retook a few ones, but still: GCam was doing better in term of colours.
looks like software issue, probably will be some updates after a official launch date with fixes after all the testing till now and user reports
I took a few pictures with my Note 10 plus and the color is identical to the s23u. Must be the room lighting. Also the S23u pictures are a lot clearer. I used to think the n10+ was awesome. The future is bright for the s23u
Groan... The high mp count is hype. This 200 or their 108mp sensors haven't revolutionized digital photography... but it sounds so impressive.

Shoot in pro mode - raw, and edit the photo later, or try regular pro mode. My suggestion is to use gcam mostly, and stock for the time when you need something basic, gcam is too powerful to be compared with any stock camera, it literally destroys them in 85% of photography segments.
And also wait few weeks for first few updates to come.

Ok i understand now, 23U will win vs LG very easy in low light, during day in 12MP vs 16 on lg, lg might be even better, but once you are in low light - HDR/high contrast scene, the LG will fall apparat, since the sensor is too small and old.

A more detailed explanation. 20 mp is a lot of mega... pixels.
In raw mode what's the image bit depth?
