How to stop 3g data from going into deep sleep - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy A3(2017). This is an unattended phone with teamviewer host installed. I want to get to this phone at any times, but I seem to be unable to connect to phone after about 5-6 hours (or one night sleep).
I have tried install an app called HSPA+ tweaked and this fixes the problem, but it eats up my battery really fast. It sends ping request every 5 sec or so.
Is there any other way to keep my 3g/4g from going into sleep? I have tried different programs that stops phone from sleep, but mobile data (3g/4g) will still sleep after 5-6 hours unattended.
Please any help is appreciated.
Thanx

Noone knows?
Is it possible to make tasker send ping request every other hour?
Any suggestions?

Did you tried connection stabilizer booster?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.connectionstabilizerbooster&hl=it
Seems able to keep a data connetion alive as you need, by using "Keep Alive" and "Reconnector".
Let us know if works.
EDIT: under the settings tab for "Keep Alive" you can also set the timeout for the ping command: by default is set to 5 seconds but you can increase this value.

This app did not work at all. Active keep alive is suppose to work, but it doesn't. It will stop sending ping quite fast. I tried to set it to ping every minute. After 15 minutes it stopped. No error in logs. active reconnect needs root access. I don't have that now. I tried to root, but I almost bricked my device.

Does the problem occur via data or wifi? Because at first I had similar trouble, I've got no data plan and my wifi was set to switch to data while the phone is in sleep. So I've only received my notification the moment I wake the phone. Put the wifi mode to never sleep and problem solve.
I hope that could help you. Otherwise tel us more.

I don't have data plan, but I have wifi sleep policy to Never, yes.
Another problem I use to have was the router. I've got a DLink that as micro shutter. So everytimes I woke the phone it disconnected and reconnected because it as lost connection during sleep mode. It happened everytimes the phone was in sleep for more than 5 min.
Try this, while using your phone, send you an email or gtalk message from another devices or pc. I've registered another account to do my test. If it work well, than let the phone on standby for at least 10 min and try sending an email....that way you'll see if you lost connection during sleep mode.
I've changed my router and never encounter the problem again. good luck!

It's not that (I think) because I tried that many times and on standby notifications arrives, yeah, but late
Sometimes late, sometimes fine. Most late. It's like phone sync (push) turns off and then turns on and arrives all notifications.

How I cut down battery drain when I'm not using my TFP

1. disable auto sync'ing on all apps such as email. I'd rather manually refresh when I use the particular app
2. Force Stop Google Maps from the Downloaded Apps list, not just stop it on the Running list. This stops Maps from restarting itself
3. Set wifi sleep policy to "Never when plugged in". All battery tips say to set wifi sleep policy to "Never". I don't think it's right for tablet. Let wifi sleep when not using it, unless you are downloading movies or tv shows then plug in the power.
The change is I used to recharge every other day, now I recharge every 3-4 days. Hope you get good results with my suggestions too.

thanks for the tip. another one is not to use auto brightness and try to keep brightness around 25% or less.
I actually froze maps with TiBu. I'll use it on my phone if I need it. It seemed to help a ton. Also, I turned ips+ on and turn brightness all the way down instead of leaving ips+ off and turning brightness up a little, I don't know if this actually helped battery or not but it kind of seemed to to me.

If I've helped you in any way... hit the "Thanks" button.
I find that not using my prime helps to preserve battery life..... C'mon guys, android is not a day old, and all these tips are more common sense nowadays than acquired knowledge. Meanwhile, I commend OP for trying to help.
OP, point no2, it depends wherever you allowed Google to use location at setup (you can change it in settings), you can shut it down all you like, but as soon as you use an app that needs location service is going to restart.

If your WiFi turns off when your tablet is sleeping, I don't think it is necessary to disable auto syncing of apps, since they won't sync without a data connection anyway.
Also I don't know what force stopping Google Maps is supposed to accomplish. Again if there is no data connection it isn't downloading or sending information it most likely isn't using any CPU.
The most important setting here is to disable WiFi when the tablet is sleeping. That is the only setting I have changed and I also get 3-4 days of battery life with moderate usage between charges.

I don't have the option that says "never when plugged in". Mine says "only when plugged in".
I still get crazy good battery idle when undocked. I wont lose a percent for over 10 hours of standby. when it is docked I lose 1% every 2-3 hours. I've tried every setting but it still occurs

What standby setting are you using that you aren't losing anything in 10 hours???
I've been thinking about this for a while

Same here.
Which got me to thinking, and this is only my common sense here.
On standby it's clear why the dock's battery shouldn't be draining, but when in use the dock needs some sort of power to run. The trackpad needs power, the keys themselves need power, when you push capslock it has a light that turns on which also needs power.
It seems that using it's own battery instead of the tablet's for power consumption while in use is the right way to handle this, and that would also make sense for a higher battery drain when not is standby mode as apposed to standby mode.
Just some of my thoughts.
Sorry you are right. "Only when plugged in"

Apps don't update when I turn my screen off

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem.
When I update or download apps from the play store, the downloading/installing stops when I turn my screen off. It seems to happen on both my wifi and 3g.
I'm running stock TMobile USA.
What could be the problem?
One more thing this only started to happen after I updated to ICS.

What's your Wifi Sleep Policy on?
I actually think my phone stops "syncing" when my screen is off too.
Because when I turn it back on I get flooded with messages in one my chatting apps.
Anyway, I still think my phone sleeps when the screen is off but I checked my Wifi Sleep Policy anyway.
menu>settings>wifi>menu>advanced>keep wifi on during sleep>always
Hope this helps.
It is set to never. And this happens when I'm using the 3g network as well.
I have the same issue. I can only assume that it is a battery saving feature of ICS.

Is there a way to turn this off? It's annoying.

I did some testing. What I did was I went into Advanced WiFi settings and changed the "Keep WiFi On During Sleep" setting. After that, I connected my device wirelessly with adbwireless. I would set it to ping a network connected device (not my computer)'s IP address through "adb shell ping (ip address here)" I would then observe results with each of 3 settings when I allowed the device to sleep according to its timeout (30 seconds).
First setting: Always [keep wifi on during sleep]- Pinged the network connected device's IP address, and once the device's screen timed out, adb stopped responding approximately 2 seconds after it timed out. It actually just halted the entire process, as when I woke it up, it resumed pinging. Normally it would have a roundtrip time of around 10-30 milliseconds. The moment I woke it up, it resumed the pinging. The first ping when I woke it up had a roundtrip of 300 milliseconds (or the amount of time it was asleep). This shows that it halts the entire process while sleeping.
Strangely, when I use my computer to ping the phone, even during sleep, the device will resume pinging the specific network connected device until I stop pinging the phone. Once stopped, the adb "hangs" until I either wake it up, or ping my phone again.
I repeated this experiment with the 2 other settings, "Only when plugged in", and "Never", and the results were the same. This must be a feature of ICS, I can only presume. I wish someone (or I) could come up with a fix, as it can get annoying. It sucks needing about 20 different apps updating, and then realizing that you can't just start updating it and then put it back in your pocket.
EDIT: Also, when I plug the phone in my computer and use adb (without adbwireless), the device will ping my network connected device continuously until I stop it. I also tested this while charging my phone and using adbwireless. The results were the same, it would continuously ping my network connected device until I stopped it. It shows that it will allow the phone using the network during sleep only when charging. I tested it with the development option "Stay awake" set to on and off. The results for both were the same.
So in other words, if I had it plugged into my charger or my computer, the phone will not suspend data if the screen turns off?

Exactly.

[Q] can anyone try this for me

i want to make sure this is part of the phone and nothing something wrong it was brought to my attention that it could be a feature built in that from 12am-7am when the phone is asleep for 20+ min that wifi and data disconnects can someone try this with there phone during those hours leave the phone aloen for 20-30 min then wake it up and see if it reconnects cause it was disconnected
i just want to make sure its not an issue with my phone since my exchange window is closing
That is HTC's night sleep mode thing.
The attachment shows my WiFi shutting off at night.

this is a normal thing
it does so to save battery
even if u lock ur phone for 5 mins it disconnects
u can change it by editing buildprop i guess or maybe some tweaks
even though it doesnt say it would work for the dna and it says roort required this apk seems to work for wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34821894
i would love if i can get 4g not to disconnect to incase im not on wifi at that time
anyone know other ways for this stuff specific to the dna yet?

wakelock only on wifi...

Ok so here is my situation.. when I am at home on wifi.. (the only place i consistently use wifi..) and my phone is in standby the process com.google.android.gsf.login is keeping my phone awake a lot... I am not complaining about battery life on this phone as a whole as it's really good.. but oddly enough for me, I get worse battery life (when it comes to standby) when on wifi... For example just yesterday I got like 19 hours and 2 hrs 15mins screen on time and about an hour of music streaming (screen off) all on 4g.. and when i looked at my battery stats the awake time and screen on times were essentially identical (other than the music streaming) but today I have been testing some at home with wifi on and off.. I have attached a picture of my battery graph.. when on wifi I have lots of wake locks that don't correspond with actual usage.. but when on mobile data those wake locks are gone..
I understand that it's an app that is doing the draining my only question is why is doing it on wifi only..
In the attached screenshot no settings were changed except for toggling wifi.. to see the difference..
My next idea is to try and get on wifi somewhere else and see if I have some weird anomaly with my wireless network at home...
anyone care to chime in?
Just an update the last 45 mins on 4g.. little wake time not associated with screen on... This has me perplexed..
Well.. I can't get the screenshot to attach but... Les than 2 mins of wake time in 40 mins on 4g at home on wifi I had like 7 mins in 25 mins on wifi..

I know that the kernel for our processor has a patch to fix wakelock problems that are draining the battery, but the manufacturers have not pushed an update. Elkay is currently working on a kernel to resolve this problem, check the Original Development subforum. Battery life is significantly improved. I'm currently using DSB'S overclock kernel which has been troublesome for most people, but the battery life has been great and I'm fortunate to have almost no problems with it.
I am on elkay's kernel... Those screenshotss were while using his kernel.. according to him moat of those issues addressed are specific to mobile data standby time.. and my mobile data standby time is actually really good..
The issues only happen when I am on wifi.., and the only WiFi I have tested is my home network..
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I get the same issue as you. I actually just mentioned it in elkay's thread. I've been getting wakelocks like that on every kernel so I don't think it's just strictly his kernel that's causing problemos.
Possible Solutions ...
1) Your home wifi has some ports blocked or proxy in effect which is causing some Google Service to be unreachable when on wifi and hence causing the wakelock
2) One of the Google Account Services is set to update over wifi only and again its unreachable over your wifi, hence the wakelock
3) Disable Gtalk/G+ if you dont use them and reboot
4) Try a different wifi network, if you dont have the wakelock, then its your home wifi router config causing issues

I am wondering if it's solution #1.. i don't have another wifi network to test on though.. i guess i could go hang out at starbucks or somewhere like that.. and see.. although with LTE (and unl. data) my I don't really "need" to be on wifi at home other than a couple apps that let me control stuff at home when on the same network.. (DirecTV, Onkyo, Shares Finder..)
I debloated the ROM I am on and Gtalk and G+ were removed since i don't use them..
I don't think I have any Google account services set to update over wifi only I have gone through the settings a couple times looking for stuff like that... that is why I am thinking it possibly has something to do with my network.. I will keep researching and if I find some solution I will update for the communities sake..
Very similar issue here, although it seems random. Just the hour day I had 13 hours on with 8 hours kept awake and 1 hour screen time.
