Root and fix of Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500FN with Optional Adaptable Storage Enabler - Samsung Galaxy J5 Guides, News, & Discussion

I ran into a few issues when rooting my J5 for the first time, but I found a working solution and wanted to share it. I'm not sure if this is the right place - feel free to move the thread or repost as you wish. I just find it important to post because I didn't find a solution anywhere else, and I want others to know how I worked it out anyway, so I just registered real quick to post this here. There's so many things that took me ages to figure out. At some point my screen went yellow when booting, other times my devices wasn't recognized, it was such a mess. But eventually I fixed it. I hope this works out for folks as well.
For sake of complete...ness, let's start at the very beginning.
Prepare:
Don't forget to make a back up of your files first, both on SD and Phone!
1. Download the latest Samsung Android USB Driver for Windows on your Computer
1a. I also downloaded these drivers I think
2. In your phone check Settings -> About Device -> Software Info -> tap a few times on Build Number to activate developer mode
3. Now go to Settings ->Developer Options ->enable OEM unlock and USB Debugging
4. Download these on your computer:
Odin
this .tar file (This one is for SM-J500FN ONLY)
SuperSU
OPTIONAL: Adaptable Storage Enabler PATCH (everything saying optional belongs to this)
5. Connect your phone via USB in Windows and move SuperSU zip into your phones folder OPTIONAL: Also move the storage patch zip to your phone
6. Power off your phone and boot to download mode (Hold VOLUME DOWN/HOME/POWER at once)
7. Press VOLUME UP
8. Go into the Odin folder and right click Odin3.exe -> start as Administrator
9. If your phone is connected properly, it should say "Added!" (if it doesn't, try reconnecting or download drivers properly again)
10. Click on the Options tab in Odin and uncheck Auto Reboot
11. Click on AP and open the .tar file you downloaded
12. Press start and wait until the message PASS! appears (if it doesn't you may have missed a step or something isn't right yet)
13. Shut down the phone when it's finished (if stuck remove the battery)
14. Hold VOLUME UP/HOME/POWER - teamwin should start
15. Swipe to allow modifications -> Install -> locate the SuperSU zip and select it -> (OPTIONAL: Add another ZIP -> locate and select the patch ->) swipe to confirm flash
16. -> Reboot system
DONE!
OPTIONAL ADOPTABLE STORAGE:
17. In your phone go to Settings -> Storage -> SD-Card -> use as internal memory (This requires formatting the SD)
BOOM, DONE!
TIP: Never, NEVER, turn the OEM-unlock option off (and developer mode for that matter), if it goes off like due to low battery it will be soft bricked and you will have to wipe all your files, it sucks, trust me.

I had the same problem with rooting J5 2015. It works now, thanks for great instructions!!!
Jan

When I try to reboot twrp...my screen tears up and turns green and glitches out. Normal booting works tho...

I've tried this on two J5s now. First one worked brilliantly. Second one: adaptable storage isn't available.
Both phones are the same model with the same software version. Only difference I can think of is that the one that worked had been factory reset before and the other one has been used for a while.
Any ideas? Anything I can check to work out what's going wrong? I'll see if there's anything useful in the threads quoted in the OP.

Managed to get it to work eventually. Not exactly sure what resolved it. Here's what I did for info:
formatted the SD card as portable storage
shutdown and boot into recovery
re-install patch
click reboot
option still not available
format SD card again
shutdown and boot into recovery
re-install patch
this time don't click the reboot option on screen, navigate back to main menu and click reboot (doubt this made any difference)
option still not available in storage menu, wait
after 30 seconds, a notification appears with option to format the SD card and now offers option to format as internal storage

Question
For this method, is it necessary to unlock bootloader? If so, which are the steps that you considered to unlock bootloader?
Sorry - Forget my question... I realised that with the "OEM-unlock option" you are already unlocking the bootloader

thank you very much!! it's working fine for me.

Thanks for your real effort. I successfully rooted my phone samsung j5. And successfully removed system app.

Thanks for this !

Hello. First of all, really thank you for your guide, it worked easily and smooth even for a person who doesn't know anything about this kind of things.
Still seems I have some issues, hope someone can help me, maybe it will help some inexperienced user like me, since I searched on the internet but I didn't find useful information about that.
Here's what happened: after I followed the guide's instruction I was able to format my sd card as internal memory. Don't know why but my phone still sees sd separate from real internal memory of my phone but not anymore as an sd, while I was expecting the phone to see it as a whole bigger memory (i.e. with my 16 gb sd and 8 gb phone I thought I had 24 gb as a whole where i could install everything).
Because of that, when I install new apps they go in the internal 8 gb memory and when it's full I still have same memory issues I had before.
I tried to get around the problem using Link2SD but still some app can't be moved, and anyway that is not actually a solution of the problem.
Another issue was that, when I connect my phone to computer, it reads only the real phone internal memory (I think, at least that's the space I see available) and not the space on the sd, so I can't put files like music or stuff on my phone from my computer. Same thing with phone camera, which I used to save my photos directly to the sd, but now I'm bound to save my photos in the internal memory and not directly to the space in the sd, as my camera doesn't see any sd. I can't even move them after I took them.
I think I can get around this problem too partitioning my sd, which is probably a good idea anyways (I have to figure out if I can partition the sd without formatting or losing data though. I'm thinking I'll backup my phone on my computer via smart switch, then wipe everything, format and partition my sd and recover my backup into the phone), but still I would be able to access the internal mounted partition only to move my apps after having them installed in the phone memory and for nothing else.
So I don't get it right (clearly), did something went wrong in enabling sd as internal memory?
I hope I have made myself understandable even if I don't really know what I'm talking about.
Thanks again to LordSamsung and to everyone who will try to help.

Will this work with j500g?

its woek < thank you bro

Hi LordSamsung,
The phone is stuck at Samsung logo and when i enter recovery it has a lot of unable to mount /cache (Invalid argument). Is there a way to perform this flash on a phone that doesn't have OEM unlock and USB Debugging enabled?
I've tried your method but i'm unable to flash the NAND this is some of the log.
<ID:0/005> SingleDownload.
<ID:0/005> recovery.img
<ID:0/005> FAIL! (Auth)
<ID:0/005>

Thanks in advance and sorry if its a stupid question

Does this works with SM-J500M? I ran into the same issue of internal memory storage but i don't want to have trouble connecting the cellphone to my pc and the SD can't be recognized like the other user that can't put music or photos in the SD bcs now it's internal. Can someone confirm this?

Great video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/
01. Download QMAT 5.06 here http://revskills.de/downloads/qmat_506.zip
It’s a demo version so will only run for 10 minutes.
02. Format your SD card to FAT32. Please keep in mind some brands of SD cards do not work. Note sd card must be in phone here
03. Use adb to run this command: adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
04. Copy the SD card cid code displayed after the adb command.
05. Start Qmat and Click on Cyptoanalysis Tools > Crypto Toolbox.
06. Look at the bottom, there is a text box (beside the “Reverse String” button) enter the SD card cid code you got earlier.
Click on the “Reverse String” button, the result is reversed…
Example: 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402
07. Copy the reversed SD card cid code.
08. Go to QMAT goldcard site here http://revskills.de/pages/goldcard.html to generate your goldcard (yes it says for G1 but works for our Hero too).
09. Enter your email. For the correct SD card cid code, you need to replace the first 2 characters to 00.
Example: From “532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402” to “002600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402”
10. Click Continue and you will receive the goldcard.img in .zip format in your email.
11. Go to your email, download the zip file and save it to a directory and unzip it to goldcard.img
12. Download HxD Hex Editor from here http://download.cnet.com/HxD-Hex-Editor/30....html?tag=mncol
13. Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program. Note SD Card has to be in your pc or reader here at this point NOTE ALSO (run the editor as administrator in order for it to appear)
14. Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.
15. Go to Extra again, Open Disk Image, open up goldcard.img which you’ve saved/unzipped earlier.
Now, you should have two tabs, one is your removable disk, the other is goldcard.img. Press OK when prompted for “Sector Size” 512 (Hard disks/Floppy disks), click OK.
16. Click on goldcard.img tab. Go to Edit tab > Select All, edit tab again > copy.
17. Click on the “removable disk” tab. Select offset 00000000 till offset 00000170 (including the 00000170 line), click on Edit tab and then Paste Write.

from which you can fastboot boot and/or root your phone with flashrec Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 (Please see guide below for this)
Done.
(STEP 2 recovery)
You need to install this recovery first with flashrec instructions below
You can use flashrec to flash the patched recovery, from where you can do all the usual stuff (and even put the old hboot back on if you want!)
Notice:
flashrec is using an exploit that isn't patched yet in the current kernel used by HTC, however if/when HTC patches this, flashrec will stop working.
So for now it's ok but a next version might have patched this, so keep this in mind !
Quick Howto:
1. On your phone, goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this).
4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
flashrec-20090815.apk
Cyanogen’s / Modaco Hero Recovery Image
Update: updated flashrec here
6. Extract the cm-hero-recovery.img out of the MoDaCoPatchedRecovery-1.0.zip and put it somewhere on your computer.
7. Save both the cm-hero-recovery.img and the flashrec-20090815.apk to your computer, then copy them both to your SD card
(do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them in the root of the SD card itself).
8. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
9. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
10. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the flashrec-20090815.apk file and click on it.
If asked, tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
11. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
12. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
Then click on the Flash Custom Recovery Image button and wait for it to finish.
13. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on
(keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background).
As long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go and load other ROM/hboot/whatever.
THIS IS OPTIONAL RECOVERY BELOW BETTER OPTIONS BUT YOU NEED THE ABOVE RECOVERY FIRST
I then flashed the new recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3 Great Video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img
(STEP 3 INSTALL CUSTOM ROM)
Then i installed the cool modaco custom rom v2.8 to my phone http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...com/292018/xda/
Great Video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
Also dont forget to upgrade your radio here http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...ate-zip-format/
Download the latest one normally on the top to install rename the zip to Update put on root of SD card and boot into recovery and install update.zip option easy as that.
STEP 4 PARTITION SD CARD)
Then finaly i partioned my sd card using the recovery imiage with thease commands directly from the phone in recovery.
I ran the following commands in this order from recvoery mode:
- Wipe data + cache (factory reset)
- Wipe ext partition on SD-card
- Wipe Dalvik-cache on SD-card (NOT on /data !) [email protected] ALWAYS WORK
- Partition SD-card : 500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32
- Convert ext2 to ext3
- Installed ROM

I ran the following commands in this order from recvoery mode:
- Wipe data + cache (factory reset)
- Wipe ext partition on SD-card
- Wipe Dalvik-cache on SD-card (NOT on /data !) [email protected] ALWAYS WORK
- Partition SD-card : 500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32

hi, was following your procedure in order to crezte the Gold Card. Everything goes perfect up to step 20. After I used to flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe; big mistake. after flashing I can't put phone in recovery mode, it showing a triangle with a exclamation mark in the center, also GPS is not existing at all, 3 G network not present. My phone has been bought from Hong Kong.
I was trying to follow the steps to recovery but useless; flashrec-20090815.apk is not working, even the new versions. If someone can help me with some advices, i'm really desperate. thanks
help please!!!!
Hi all. after I create the gold card, see link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...187#post5036187, I RUU my Htc Hero from Hong Kong with SEA: (South East Asia)
RUU_Hero_HTC_Asia_SEA_WWE_2.73.728.5_release_signe d_NoDriver.exe and I'd seen there is no GPS, Market and 3G, than I'd applied another RUU RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.66_WWE_test_signed_NoDri ver.exe and this time I have Market, but still no GPS and 3G. I tried different RUU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622, but no one working, not even the previous two. I tried to use flashrec-20090815.apk in order to flash, but no working. even the new version of flashrec not working. I tried to put in recovery mode holding POWER + HOME button, but after boot is showing a triangle with exclamation mark in the middle. Same is happening if I try to go in recovery mode from ADB (command adb shell reboot recovery). Is somebody so kind to explain me what to do in order to restore my phone at least how it was before, please? My skills in android development are 0. thanks
help please!!!!
so, nobody wants to help me ? i'm really desperate ...........
finally, I made again the gold card, after I re flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe, and works. Than I used flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk and recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img and I created Backup.img. Tried to put in recovery mode by pressing in the same time Power and Home and I got the following screen:
"reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]"
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
BTW, GPS and 3G still missing from menu. Trying to update with 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-chinese-signed.zip or with 3.0-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip, I got this :
" -- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No signature (663 files)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted."
Phone hanging, freezing.... HELPPPPPP please!!!!!!!!

And the Android forums are new, and thus there has been very little response to the intention to recognize those who have contributed knowledge, apps, themes, guides to the community.

Hi, I have the exact same hero as you do (same system etc..). Didn't work with the "RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe"
so am now about to try it with this one:
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
but after reading you post I am a lil weary...
is you hero still not working 100%??
Thx
1. Bricked my rooted G2 with 2.1 rom by interrupting the radio update process
2. Got it back within 5 days repaired in warranty FOC! mainboard replaced.
3. Flashrec backup recovery did not work, so had to go into goldcard method. (2.73.110.26 CL#69351)
4. Update succesfull. I thank you very much for your efforts Even the ugly static G2 T-Mobile screen now says HERO
5. Linda File Manager + FlashREC
6. Backup recovery -> Backup complete
THANKS
I got a Customer Id Error when I try to install either
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed _NoDriver.exe
or
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD river.exe
I thought the purpose of the GoldCard was to help bypass the ID checking?

It is - the point is that the creation of a goldcard is not an exact science. If your goldcard is not correct, for any reason, it won't work.
There have been many accounts on these forums of people having to try 3 or 4 times (usually using different SD cards) before getting a goldcard that works.

Dave

I got it working on the second attempt. In the tutorial I was reading it advice I use a separate sd card reader when creating the gold card.
On my second attempt I just left the card in the phone the whole time and mounted it through the phone when I needed to perform hex editing on it.
Lovely job, now to choose what custom ROM I shall flash.

Cant open my internal Harddrive.

Hey, i have got a real big problem.
I just wanted to Flash my Galaxy s3 with ArchiDroid and did all like he said in his Tutorial
1) Connect your phone to your pc and give it some time for installing drivers. When it's finished reboot your pc. It's important. After reboot check if windows can "detect" your phone, for example by entering "My Computer" section. It should be available as portable device.
2) Download newest ArchiDroid .zip file and put it on your phone, I strongly suggest your internal memory.
3) Disconnect your phone from the pc.
4) Download attached Odin3 Software and unpack it's content on your pc: Attachment 1879375
5) Click with your right mouse button on Odin3 executable and select "Run as administrator"
6) Download latest PhilZ Touch Recovery in .tar.md5 format and put it in the odin's folder or somewhere nearby. DON'T UNPACK IT! File should look like this: philz_touch_4.92.8-i9300.tar.md5
7) Click on the "PDA" button in odin and select your recovery in .tar.md5 format. Also untick "Auto Reboot" option. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER BUTTONS OR CHECKBOXES!
8) Turn off your phone
9) Hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons to enter Download mode. It should say "Downloading, do not turn off target"
10) Connect your phone to your pc. It should be shown in Odin's message log as f.e. "<ID:0/003> Added!!".
11) Hit "Start" button and be patient. It shouldn't take longer than a few seconds. Your phone won't automatically reboot, wait for progress bar to reach the end and move to the next point.
12) Reboot into recovery by holding combination: Vol-Up + Home + Power. Hold it until you see "Samsung Galaxy S3" logo (about 7 seconds).
13) Click on Wipe Data/Factory Reset => Clean to install a new rom. WARNING! From this point you'll be unable to load your current system as it wipes everything available (your internal/external card will remain untouched). Please make sure that you're ready for this step and that you have right .zip file available.
14) After cleaning hit Install zip => Choose zip from sdcard. Then navigate to your location of archidroid.zip file and open it. Now you'll be able to set various options in AROMA "Setup Wizard", just follow the steps and ArchiDroid should properly flash and reboot your system after installation.
15) First boot takes quite longer than usual, I'd say maximum of 5 minutes.
But after point 14 where it said i have to choose zip from sdcard. And i selected the "ArchiDroid-1.X-STABLE" i downloaded from his Dropbox, because the normal download was like 30kbits it said
that it couldnt be loaded because the zip was bad??
I dont know, right now im stucked with a phone without any Rom in it. I could put another Rom in it, but i cant get into my Harddrive of my phone and i have no external Sdcard...
is there a way to get my phone back at life? i have it 2-3 days now, and i was really angry about the battery life so i choose to put a rom in it...
i hope u guys can help me! Greetings Fnatique

Flash back to stock with Odin and also get a ext sd card (you should always have a ext card for situations exactly like this) or and don't forget to backup your efs if you haven't already (VERY IMPORTANT).

Right now i was googling for a bit, and im downloading original firmware of my Samsung ( stock version ? )
i will put the md5 file into Odin, and start from scratch...
well i havnt backuped my efs but i read some days before (yes i was thinking about flashing even before i had my phone) that its possible to find them out with a program.
if i cant put a custom rom in the next 3 hrs on my phone. i will buy a ext sdcard and try it again after school.
another little question i have got is, wich custom rom could i get instead of ArchiDroid for good performance and Battery life?
i was looking in alot threads but everyone says the same " its the opinion of the user what he personally desires more, you have to check the roms at your own "
i just havnt the intention to download like 50 roms to check them all out for 2 weeks wich one gaves best battery life.
so someone got a idea pls? greetubgs
Ok Guys i managed to get rid of my problem, with a external sdcard.
Thanks god, now i have got archidroid on my phone <3

[Q] step by step rooting

I TAKE NO CREDIT OTHER THAN GATHERING AND CLARIFYING THE PROCESS
Seems as though there isn't any device specific directions do this at your own risk if you wake up in the middle of the night and your android is walking around you can blame that on me
Ok start by downloading this http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096
This will get you a temp clock work recovery
Also you need su UPDATE zip. To your external sd card http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
you need the Asus drivers from att http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Mo..._Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows_20131202.zip
Ok now to get the phone ready pull the handset loose from tablet
Go to settings/ about/ software information
Tap build number 7 times. Your now a developer
push back once go to developer options
Tick USB debugging
go back go to storage
top right corner tap USB symbol
Select camera ptp
Now plug phone into PC install the drivers you downloaded
when that's done your pc should see phone and ask you what you want to do close all that open the Intel android file you downloaded just unzip to desktop open file and double click launcher look at phone it should be asking you to trust computer click ok
Cap locks on type accept the option t3 and just wait
when your phone is done and in clock work install zip from sd card then go back wipe cache go to backup backup to external SD card you can back up internal but it takes a bit of space now reboot and enjoy root
I want to thank you profoundly for taking the time to do this, truly. Before reading your guide I was going absolutely nuts! I had stumbled through all the relevant guides but for some reason I wasn't piecing it together. Thank you.

problem rooting
Hey, thanks for posting the step by step guide.
unfortunately haven't get mine to work yet.
I noticed that the "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip" in external drive doesnt seem to be visible in the CWM session :/ I do see an Update.zip, however nothing happens when I choose to install from zip.
One question about
the step where we have to "select camera ptp"
why do we have to do that?
I noticed that under "Intel Android Devices Root / Temp CWM Session" the phone had problem accessing the external SD card.
Not sure if it is because the SD card was from my previous android device, will try again after it is reformatted.
When I boot the phone whit de .bat into CWM mode
only shows me a quarter of the image, to be exact the upper left ,
not let me run any commands by usb or touch nowhere.
if I put the phone to the tablet does not work in that state. any suggestions?

That's because you're using twrp, use option 5. cwm.zip it should work fine... use volume up and down to navigate and power to confirm.

[GUIDE] How to install Android on your Switch, step-by-step.

This guide was created for people who are not as familiar with the world of Switch exploits.
NOTE: This is not the official ROM thread! DO NOT ask questions about using, troubleshooting, etc. the ROM here. I will not be able to help you and it splits discussion. Please ask questions, tips, etc, in the official thread! This post is purely to guide users in setting up their PC and such for installing this on their Switch.
DISCLAIMER: Everything is done at your own risk. Use common sense.
What you will need:
An RCM exploitable Switch console. Check here to see if your device is exploitable. If you have a newer device an exploit may be possible on older firmwares, but if you haven't already set it up you probably updated to a too new version already. Read more here. (for non-RCM exploitable devices)
A jig or other method of triggering RCM. Here's a few methods. Premade jigs can be found online.
A computer. (Assuming a Windows PC for the purposes of this guide)
A good USB-C cable that can connect to your PC and Switch.
A high quality, high speed microSD card of at least 16GB.
A way to read microSD cards on your PC.
Required downloads:
The ROM, find it in the Downloads section of the first post. Select the SD Card size that matches yours. Read through the post as well for latest information.
If desired (but not required), the shield-ifier.zip and/or the Reboot2Payload zipfile also in the ROM downloads section. Shieldifier should allow you to download games meant for the NVIDIA Shield. Reboot2Payload means you'll reboot to Android when you hit "reboot" within Android (or Hekate if you choose reboot to bootloader). Without it you'll reboot to the default OS.
GApps, AKA Google Apps. This will install the Play Store and other Google services. Not required but 95% of people will want this. Select ARM64, 8.1, and then any on the right (Nano is recommended). Hover your mouse over each option for descriptions. If you're not sure just choose Nano.
TegraRcmGUI. This program will push the exploit to your Switch. Grab the latest .msi installer and install it.
balenaEtcher. This program will write the ROM to your SD card.
Hekate. This is the "bootloader" if you will. Once you get to RCM with your jig (or whatever method) this is the payload we'll be sending over. The ROM developer recommends using version 5.0 exactly, and I'll recommend that. Version 5.2+ however does include support for partitioning your SD card so you can use one SD card for Horizon (Switch's default OS) and Android, though I have not been able to figure it out.
I recommend putting the ROM, GApps, shieldifier, Reboot2Payload, and Hekate files all in one folder so your Downloads folder doesn't get cluttered.
Steps:
Insert your SD card into your PC. Backup anything you need to because all data on the card will be wiped.
Open balenaEtcher. Select the "android-XXgb.img.gz" file you downloaded. In the middle make ABSOLUTELY sure the device selected is the SD card you want to use. You don't want to accidentally destroy some other drive you have attached. Click "flash". This can take a while (30mins-hours depending on SD card speed and size!), especially on larger cards. The progress bar will jump around, and get stuck at like 99%. Don't worry, that's fine.
Once it's complete you can close balenaEtcher. You should be able to see two new drives in Windows explorer. One will give an error if clicked (Don't click format when Windows asks!) and another is a 2gb partition Windows can read. If these don't appear then reinsert your SD card into your PC. Mine mounted the unreadable partition as D:\ and the readable one as S:\. EDIT:Redoing this months later it only shows the one drive for me.
Place the GApps .zip (and shieldifier/Reboot2Payload .zip) file(s) in the root of the 2gb partition. Don't unzip them.
Eject the SD Card from your PC and place it in your Switch.
Use your preferred method of booting into RCM. I posted a link with many methods in the "What you need" list up top. You'll know you're in RCM when the Switch screen stays black and doesn't boot as normal when you hold Power+Vol Up.
Launch TegraRcmGUI. Go to the settings tab and select "Install driver". Go back to the payload tab and select the Hekate .bin file as your payload. Connect your Switch. It should say "RCM OK" in TegraRcmGUI. Now select "Inject Payload". Once you see the GUI on your Switch then you can disconnect it.
Tap "More Configs" and then hold down Vol Up and tap "Switchroot Android". Continue holding Vol Up until you get to the TWRP menu.
Tap "Keep Read Only" on the first screen.
Tap "Mount" and check "System" and "Vendor". Then tap the home button at the bottom. (If they don't appear, move your finger up and down in the middle and it should refresh, try that every time it looks like things are missing in TWRP.)
Tap "Install", then "Select Storage", then "Micro SD card" and "OK". Tap the GApps zip, uncheck "Reboot after installation is complete" and slide the slider to the right. Optionally do the same for shieldifier and Reboot2Payload (press back after GAPPS flash to go back). Once finished with all zips wipe the Dalvik cache (it will prompt you). NOTE: If you want GAPPS you MUST install GAPPS before you first boot up Android, so if you accidentally booted into Android, reflash your SD card and restart the guide (you may be able to wipe data and caches through TWRP to fix it, I haven't tested).
Select "Do not install" if it asks to install the TWRP app. Reboot the device (you may have to hold the power button), enter RCM again, and re-inject hekate from your PC. Boot Android again but this time don't hold any buttons. Your screen may be black for a minute, don't panic. First boot takes a while.
Your device should boot into android. Congratulations. Update the NVIDIA Shield app through the Play Store if you installed it. For setting up anything else, or for questions you may have, use the official thread.
You are missing the step where you mount the SD card first before installing GApps. GApps install will fail if you do not mount the SD in TWRP first.

Ohhhhh you mean mount the /System partition? I think we had a miscommunication. The "sdcard" is automatically mounted, as shown in the YouTube video I hastily made...
I believe the part about mounting the /System partition is only needed sometimes, depending on what you told TWRP to do with the /System partition on first boot. Got ya.

Not much to it. Short pin 9 & 10 and hold down power and vol up. If you can't manage it look into buying a premade jig that does it easily and reliably.
So one side of the paper clip directly on pin 9,10 and the other near a conductive metal? Also there are several options on amazon. (Quickest shopping method) any chance you can point me to the correct one?

Just shorting 9&10 should do it. They're just plastic with a tiny piece of metal inside. Just find one with good reviews.
What's the best way to boot into recovery, this is my first time trying to do anything in relation to modding my switch, any help will be highly appreciated!
everything is working but my joycons wont connect any ideas?
One thing that isn't on here that was required for me was to wipe the dalvic and the cache right after flashing GAPPS. It wouldn't boot aftr that, might be a good addition to your guide. Thanks for the guide though, it was absolutely amazing and got be Android!
Does it cleans the data on switch or just clear the sd card?
Please don't advise people to shove a paperclip into their rails. The pins are susceptible to damage. Advise them to purchase a proper jig, instead.
Does this process make any changes to the Switch? Normally I use SX OS and would rather not mess with it just to try Android.
Will the switch boot android automatically, or do you need to inject hekate from a PC or phone every time you want to boot it?

Atmosphere and Android
This is awesome news, by chance I had just ordered a hackable Switch today.
Might be a silly question, but I was planning to follow the NH Server instructions to install the Atmosphere CFW
I have ordered a 512GB Micro SD Card for homebrew stuff
The instructions here (Thanks, very clear) suggest that an entirely new / dedicated SD card will be needed for Android.
Anyone planning / see a way to partition and have Atmosphere apps AND Android off of 1 SD card?
Thanks
After injecting payload, screen stays black. Anybody having this issue?
See screenshot showing payload was successfully injected.

That's the Google translation:
A little instruction on how to get RooT. And so, everything that you do, as always, is at your own peril and risk! All data is erased when unlocked! Make BACKUP !!! Is always!!!! I. Unlocking Boorloder-a (required for flashing the phone and everything connected with it): 1. Go to settings -> system -> About phone -> Build number (7 clicks) (Congratulations !!!! You are a developer!) < - About phone -> For developers: Enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking. 2. We connect the phone to the computer and install the ADB usb driver (on the Internet), a connection request should appear on the phone, you need to allow it. 3. Extract files from the N20_utils.rar archive (10.87 MB) (preferably not very far, the root of the disk or the created folder N20 will be there). Go to the Unlocked Bootloader folder and run the bat file, the phone will reboot and display the request "unlock? Yes / no" rocker up - yes / rocker down - no. Naturally, you need to press the volume up, otherwise there were so many actions)) 4. Congratulations! Now, with each reboot, you will have an Orange state (5-second inscription), and the ability to do whatever you want with your phone. II. We sew! 1. For the lazy (who value their time). Download the SP Flash tool (Internet), from the N20_utils.rar archive (10.87 MB) select MT6763_Android_scatter and boot_magisk_20 files for the boot partition, lk_pached for lk, etc. you can even twrp instead of native recovery. Turn off the phone, connect it to the computer and click Download in the SP Flash programs. After the OK circle appears, disconnect and reconnect the cable (easier than a forced reboot). We turn on the phone and put the magisk manager (internet). Congratulations!!! You have a root and no Orange State label! 2. Who wants more and himself: phone to computer -> go to the Unlocked Bootloader folder -> run CMD -> write "fastboot flash recovery" put a space and move the TWRP file with the mouse to the window (fast path to the file) and press ENTER -> reboot the phone to fastboot. Congratulations!!! you have TWRP. Boot into TWRP, skip the encrypted DATE message, go to formatting and format the DATE. Go to mount and connect MTP. A phone will appear on my computer, we drop the files DisableForceEncryption_Treble (disable date encryption), orange_state_disabler_v0.3 (remove orange_state) and magisk.zip (internet) into the memory section. In TWRP, click install all this and rejoice! 3. Who has nothing to do at all: go to the forum thread Development and porting of GSI firmware (Post bullik01 # 71222655) and try what catches your eye. Not all are loaded, but .... (although we do not seem to have an A / B structure, but only "arm64 A / B" were launched) PS: look for additional information here on the forum and for brotherly devices UMiDIGI A5 Pro - Firmware ( Post Xakep1993 # 86772223) Attached files recovery-TWRP_3.3-20191015-1714.img (22.81 MB) DisableForceEncryption_Treble.zip (4.24 MB)

Hi, were you by any chance able to get a copy of these files ,Please upload if posssible
The original links are broken and the internet seemed to wipe all traces out, I'm looking for the N20_utils and possibly the Disable force encryption one
Good day
Had the same problem, (English not so good but I know you'll understand). What I did was just installing Corvus OS rom, the 11th version. It's been quite a while since i installed it.
Tried Lineage 18.1 and adding the smallest gapps available, but everytime i get code error 1. I guess it was the twrp 3.3 version i used cause some roms requer the latest TWRP versions. The lineage is installing just right nd can reboot to system with no hiccups.
None of Android 12 gsi versions has ever been able to installed. Cause when i try to install, i get the error of "file too large for the target partition. Tried everything from the net to increase the system partition to at-least 3gig. No success.....
Is anyone who can help to install android 12 even beta version will be ok for my N20 Doogee??
Thanx

The file is in the forum. But to make your life easier here are the link.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18B-srDVia_H4aDt7uvCDUxg2e4R5kVVY?usp=sharing The file is of type .exe and that extracts when you run on the pc, the problem is that I was suspicious about the virus so I threw the file in the total virus (if you don't know what it is, just search) and 6 programs pointed it out as malware but many others didn't find anything including karpersky and bit defender, there to make sure the files were there i renown they from .exe to .zip and I looked and the files really were there but as I don't want to take the risk I didn't extract and I didn't even try anything. The file that fix the encryption are inside doogee n20.exe, the guy said it will be in .exe and when you run it extracts the file in the C folder of the computer I recommend you to rename it from .exe to .zip because if the file have a virus you can screw your pc when running
