How do I do a file system or profile migration so I can install Google Play store?? - Chromebooks

I am considering buying a Samsung Chromebook 3 which based on the following link can support Android apps. Now, the issue is that it says that one must do a file system or profile migration in order to support the apps. However, I cannot find any information on how to do this migration. Google has instructions for Education and Enterprise customers but nothing for regular consumer.
How do I do this? I, of course, Googled how to do this and I end up with nothing. I need to know how I can install the Google Play store and run Android apps. I have instructions on how to install Google Play but nothing on the migration that according to Google is required.
Please help!

I have a Chromebook 3 and am running Android apps with no issue. It's fairly simple to do and now only requires the steps here: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/get-android-apps-on-your-chromebook in a nutshell, this simply involves first open settings -> select about > under or around the "check for updates" button, click the "More info" link. An option will be presented to change to the beta channel. Select that and wait for the update to download and install (in my experience, the beta channel is way better than the stable channel anyway). After you restart, go right back to Settings, and scroll down until you see the checkbox for enabling the Google Play Store. Agree and sign in using your Google account. That's it. I've enjoyed using many Play Store apps seamlessly on the Samsung Chromebook 3.

Solution found
After half an hour on Google chat and Asus I got an answer. Very simple.
1) Click on your user picture in the lower right
2) Click the Settings cog
3) Scroll down to the easily missed "google play store" section. It's the seventh section down on mine and is only a single line section.
4) Click on "turn on"
Then just wait for it to do it's thing. It will take a minute or two and then will launch the Google Play Store app. Mine came up and said it wasn't responding but I clicked on "wait" and it popped up about 5 seconds later. I was able to install 2 "android" apps right off the bat. Super easy and quick. I hope this helps others searching for this answer.
Incidentally...if you don't have a touch screen Chromebook it seems that the arrow keys do your swyping for you in android apps. Kind of counter-intuitive though...I had to use the right arrow to "swype" LEFT. But it wasn't too difficult to figure out.

Market saying app is installed

I was certain this would be answered already but couldn't find one...
I've flashed hundreds of ROMs and have always been able to go to market.android.com and install apps (even ones that said "INSTALLED") but I just flashed a new ROM and now if I click on an app it says it's already installed on the device. Is there anyway to reset this data on the website?
EDIT:
Ugh. Searched for 30 minutes before posting this and couldn't find an answer - literally the next thing I read had the answer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22661841&postcount=12
Login to your Google dashboard; from a PC preferebly. Else from cell is also fine.
There, scroll down to "Android market" and click "Installed applications"
This will open android market, with your already installed apps list, under orders tab. Click the 'Settings' tab here.
Hopefully you'll see your device listed here, but the nickname will be missing. At least that's what I saw. Edit and add a nickname, save changes.
Thanks ..just encountered the problem...I'm always switching ROM (very addicting) & 1st time I encountered this problem as well.
Yikes...My device is not listed ...Guess I have to add them manually from my phone

This happens to me when I switch ROM format or smartphone, but sending the install again, it works.
Galaxy S4 Solution
I had to reinstall ("repair") the software on my Galaxy S4. When all was complete, I had the same problem as the OP. I fixed it by:
Going to the app store via my phone--"play store" app.
Clicking the menu button (bottom left on the phone).
Selecting My Apps.
The missing apps had an X and just said free or whatever.
Clicking the app opens the window to install.
Obvious from there....

Can't download paid apps i receive Error 403 Android market.

Hi!
I purchased Tasker android app on the android market 7th march. When i try to download that app i receive "Error Takser could not be downloaded due to and error. (403)". My bank confirm Google charged, but i can't download it. If i visit android market using web browser i can see i already purchased it. If i clear cache data on "Play store" app its not work? Are there any solution?
Why don't you contact the developer with your order number and see if he can help
Email google about this issue.
I'm having this issue with all my Android Devices....this is apparently a problem with google. I've been in contact with them and they said their were issues with teh conversion to Google Play. I've been dealing with this for 2 weeks and have access to free apps, but I can't buy any. I've been forced to purchase apps from the Amazon Appstore. Google apparently doesn't want my money....I've been sending emails to google and the developers of the apps I purchased (Scrubs and Cut the Rope: Experiments) and have had literally NO correspondence from google or the the developers. This sucks, as I just got my Prime and Picked up a Used A100, now Google is screwing me....Just some bad news...considering that it's been 2 weeks since this issue cropped up for me and the fact that Google (and it appears the developers) are ignoring my emails, I'm going to assume two things, Google doesn't care, suggesting you start a new google account and re-buying your apps, or it's a known issue and they just don't want to deal with us right now....I just want a straight answer....It could be months before this is fixed....I recommend emailing google ASAP.
I have the same issue. Galaxy S2.
I downloaded an application ($20) from a forum to test it before purchasing, now after uninstalling it, it says i've already purchased it!
So i go to click INSTALL (no Buy button) in the Market (Google Play) and it says error 403 or something..
I thought I would be smart and download the AppBrain appstore. Well the STUPID thing is there is no reason to ever use this, as it just opens up the Market and wants me to install again without buying!
I tried to do the same thing with the Amazon app store, but they too divert you back to the Market app (market:// I assume)
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can "reset" or make the market think I haven't purchased this Application, and be able to purchase it legitimately and support the developer and receive frequent updates form the developer????
Thank you very very much!
Don't worry dude, every android users are facing the same issue all over the world. It is the Google's side that is having issues.
My google play have your issue intermediately few days ago.
I've had the same problem so I decided to use Wifi from home. I found that by using my home wifi that I was able to update. I know this doesn't help the problem if you are not connected to wifi but if you are at home - it might help

Just started getting this error again. Anyone else? Tried clearing store cache, dalvik-cache and google framework cache. Still gives a 403 error when attempting to download a paid app.
I just did a factory reset on my phone, and all my apps, free and paid installed no problem.. except Smart Keyboard Pro. It showed "purchased", I clicked it and told it to install (from the PC), and that was over an hour ago. I have restarted, and it still wont download, i get the 403 error each time..
I'm open for ideas...

Your suggestion works perfectly! Unfortunately, it is requiring me to repurchase an app I've already paid for and I don't want to repay. I know, I know $2.99 is not going to break the bank; but it's kinda the principle. No worries, if I don't find an alternative solution I will be forking over the cash.
So I have had this ongoing issue as well for over 9 months. Tech support was a joke, like some of you have figured out.
Somehow, with no intervention from me, the problem fixed itself both on the website and the device. Not sure what happened, but im happy it did. I was fairly close to cutting all ties to google services over this, guess I dont have to now.
Here appslova.com have compiled solutions to fix error 403:
Method 1: The most common fix for most Android market or Google Play related errors.
Go to system settings>> Accounts>>Google>>remove your Gmail account
Now from settings>>Apps>>All> Force stop, Clear data and cache for Google Play Store, Google Service Framework and Download Manager (like in method 1)
Now again go to settings>> Accounts>>Google>>Add your gmail account
Restart your android and then accept all the Google terms and setup Google settings
Rerun Google Play Store and update or install your app.
Method 2-Clearing Proxy:
Go to settings>>Wireless and Networks>>More>>Mobile Networks
APN (Access Point Name)>>MOWAP>>Edit
Select clear Proxy option
Try to re-run the installation in Google Play Store
Method 3-Router Proxy Settings:
Open your router configuration or settings panel (example- typing 192.168.1.1 on the browser brings up the router settings on my TP-Link router)
Now find your filter settings>>Uncheck Proxy
If that didn’t work also uncheck Cookies box from the filter settings
Now install your app from Google Play
Method 4- Alternative Google account
Create another Google account if you currently have only one account
Open Google Play Store>>Press Menu button>>Accounts>>select the alternative Gmail account
Now try installing the app
Method 5- Browser Fix: I found this solution on Phonebuff.com.
Go to play.google.com on your Computer’s web browser (preferably Google Chrome).
Sign into your Google account (by hitting the sign-in button at the top right).
Search for the app you wish to purchase and download.
Open the app’s page up by clicking the title link.
On the “install” or “purchase” button, right click and press “inspect element.”
Above the row that will be highlighted, you’ll see several lines of code. Locate the “data-ispurchased=”true” code (near the bottom of the paragraph).
Double click on the “true” in data-is purchased=”true” and change it to “false” then press enter on your keyboard.
Now click on “installed” or “purchased” to buy the app as you normally would
These methods might seem like a lot of work but hopefully one of these methods will solve the 403 error for your Android.

Play Store purchased apps

Where can i see all the purchased apps?
Did they just make it so you see the install history? very annoying :-\

I don't want to see all. Just purchased....
When you pull up play store and you go to "my apps". It puts you at the installed list, if you swipe left to right you go to "all" which is a mix of purchased and non purchased apps. swiping right to left from all just goes back to installed, and you can not swipe right to left from installed. Someone care to show a screenshot of their play store "purchased" list without all the history?
Installed shows everything you have installed since you flashed, bought the phone, whatever. ALL shows everything mixed, purchased and non purchased apps installed on that account..
Where is the "purchased tab"? Before the market went to Play, you could see an Installed / Not Installed list, the Not Installed list ONLY showed purchased apps, nothing else.. Is there a way to get that back?

Not on the phone. Their might be a way via the website, I rarely log in to the Playstore website.
Im just curious as to why this is a problem? Its not a big deal to scroll thru the list and look for the word "Purchased" on the right hand side, I have a list that is massively long because I have downloaded a crap load of apps (but I usually uninstall them shortly afterwards) and Im easily able to find what Im looking for, especially since the list provided is chronological.
Yes, it would be nice to have filtering and sorting options but I know right around when I downloaded a specific app that I dont remember the name for.
Now, if you have Appbrain installed, I do believe their website has filtering and sorting available for your install history...
Oh, if the reason is because during the Android initial setup process, all your apps automatically install, just uncheck the 'restore my phone settings' option when prompted (its on the screen either just before or just after the 'backup my phone' option).
It's a big deal.
Very annoying.

Yea, Its very annoying. Cause I have to search for my PAID apps, As it shows almost everything ive downloaded since 2010!
I guess, I find it quite useful actually.
The way it used to be, that free app I downloaded 3 months ago that I couldnt remember the name of, I can now find.
It also doesnt help that a few apps had a key which is the paid portion of said app without having the free portion of the app. Yes, I know I could go into the 'key' app and then look at related or more from the developer to get the actual app itself but now its in the list.
As I said, some filtering and sorting options would be nice but you can always scroll thru the list and look for the word 'Purchased'. Its not hard to do. And if you have a general idea of when you purchased the app, it gives you an idea of how far back to scroll.
The Play store is definately in need of more filtering options!
Can't agree more about missing the list of the purchased (but not installed apps)..
I used to purchase apps that I thought would come in useful at some point down the track and use it as a bit of a bookmark that I could easily access..
Showing everything that's been installed is useful to some people I suppose, but there should be a filter, or another screen to filter by things I've actually paid for and aren't installed.
yea um you cant even see all the apps on the website it shows 20 blocks and no more. 12 per page 20 blocks. 224 apps thats it i have some old apps that i purchased on the hero back when it was first released and i can no longer get to them. its really freakin annoying having to search for PAID apps. this was the WORST decision they could have made. really how hard would it have been to make a 3rd column for recent free apps. or something like that.
Google wallet does a pretty good job of storing your paid app history.
Has this issue ever been sorted?
No, the new version of the market still lacks this valuable feature.
Google Checkout
Its still a pain and not a direct download link to the app, but you can view your transaction history on Google checkout and then find the app in the store (wallet dot google dot com). I've run into the same issue after wiping my phone and trying to remember what i've actually purchased for re-download.
I wish there were an easier way to simply sort by paid/free in you history as with the general market.

[Q] Freedom 1.0.6 Google play store 5.2.13?

Hello guys,
I hope I'm at the right place to ask a Q and If I'm at the wrong place, please forgive me. My Q is. I have Freedom 1.0.6 with Market unlocker and it used to work with previous Google play store.
It doesn't work now with the new Google play store update and I don't know why. When i try to purchase gems etc, it just says Google play store has stopped. So is there any solution to solve this problem? I will gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
play store 5.2.13 update is broken!
same problem here, anytime I click on any app - play force closes/crashes and it says "google play store has stopped" I called google and they were a bunch of a-holes about it, insisting that it was only my device and my problem. glad to read that this is widespread! although for some reason my other devices dont update themselves and stay on the previous play version 5.1.11
PS I dont have freedom and I just found out that freedom is warez. i suggest that you edit ur post and take out any mentioning of warez and focus on the real problem which is play store update 5.2.13 and perhaps that way u grab the attention of the right people who can help us. Nobody on here will help this post if ur mentioning warez!!!

What can we do?
So what can we do to solve this problem? Is there anything we can do?
Well, I will try to to downgrade my google play store and see if it works. Maybe Freedom doesn't support Android 5.2.13 which is the play store. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is having this issue.
Same issue re: Google Play Store 5.2.13
EDIT: Please note that I don't use Freedom, however I am experiencing similar issues.
Having the same issue, on a very old device: Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE (model # SGH-I957R). Stock TouchWiz 4.0.4, device rooted with SuperSU 2.46.
My steps to duplicate the error:
1. Tap Google Play Store > app opens normally
2. Tap Search button > type in app name
3. In search results, tap an app (Facebook for instance) > page appears to load > freezes and then crashes, producing the error "Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped."
4. Google Play Store closes and tablet revers to app drawer
The temporary method I've used to get around this: in your search results, tap the three dot menu on the app you want and then tap Install. Skips the app description page entirely and works fine.
So far I've tried using the steps in this XDA thread and also these Android PIT instructions, but no luck. No amount of clear cache + clear data + force stop + uninstall updates + disabling/re-enabling apps + signing out and then back in of Google Account has worked thus far. Will report back with more finding once I find a solution!
Freedom and luck patcher are banned on this site and you will not get any help concerning them.

exactly the same is happening with me. the 3 dot menu is brilliant fix for now. i've also tried everything just like u but nothing seems to work. btw - some of my other devices upgraded their market to 5.2.13 as well but they dont have this problem. i wonder if it is related to the OS? my crashes happen on ICS OS 4.0.3 and on my other device JB 4.3.1 play store 5.2.13 works ok. Note to administrator: please do not block me, i am the one who told that guy not to post about warez! now my xda app seems locked as I cant access my participated and under my profile i cant access the list of my posts either. admin - did u do smthng to my accnt?? pls dont! i am telling ppl NOT to post about warez. I didnt even know what freedom was! i had to look it up.

Delete, Disable, Downgrade and prevent update of Google Play Services [ROOT]

There are plenty of threads out there on this issue, but none of the fixes I found worked for me as-is, so I put this post together. Once I had everything I needed, the fix was easy, so I hope I can save someone else a few hours (or days) of banging their head against the wall.
This is a long post, so if you want, skip ahead to The Fix:...
Background:
About a week ago my Android devices started to go haywire. For example, two original Gen 2 Kindle Fires (running Amazon's heavily-reskinned version of ICS 4.0.3) started throwing "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped" messages every few seconds, which required clicking on "OK" to continue.
At about the same time, the battery life on my OnePlus One (running stock CM 11.0 4.4.4 Kit Kat w/root) sank without a trace. I used to finish up the day with 50-60% remaining, and now I was at 15-18%. The culprit was Google Play Services, which went from "hey, I never noticed THAT before" to "holy smoke, it's sucking up more juice than the screen".
This is the part where I thought, "Okay, I'll roll back the googleplayservices apk, restore the status quo, and eventually King Google will roll out a fix". Easy peasey. Except not!
I started with the Kindles. First I verified that Automatic Updates were disabled in Google Play, then I opened Settings/Apps/Google Play Services and hit "Uninstall Updates". Verified that the installed version was the original, rebooted, everything worked as it should. No more errors. Simple, right?
About an hour later, I picked up one of the Fires and got the error again. Long story short, I realized that Google silently updates Google Play Services (along with a few other GAPPS) regardless of your auto-update setting. I tried disabling the app, but the button was grayed out. Since these were Kindles and not phones, I just uninstalled Google Play Services. I'm not recommending anyone do that, but it was a down-and-dirty resolution, and easily reversible.
I turned my attention to the OnePlus One, and that's where things got really ugly. I did a web search about the Google Play Services battery life issue, and found it to be a huge problem for many users. At that point, the solution seemed to be manage GPS through App Opps, or an aftermarket progam, to keep it's activity under control. But no matter how I tweaked it using App Ops, DisableService or MyAndroidTools (the last two are excellent free aps by WangQi, available on Play Store) I wound up with poor battery life, plus I started getting the "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped" error, although not as frequently as on the Kindles. I couldn't disable or force stop GPS, but I could click "Uninstall Updates".
But then I got "can't uninstall because this package is an active device administrator". No problem, I thought, I'll just remove GPS as a device administrator. Turns out, it was a hidden device administrator. And Google had hidden it so hard, I couldn't view it even with an app created just to view hidden device admins.
The Fix:
DISCLAIMER: This worked for me, with my OPO running stock, rooted CM11 KitKat 4.4.4. I'm not responsible for bricking your device! Backups strongly suggested.
1. Download and install System App Remover from the Google Play Store.
2. Put your device in Airplane Mode in order to prevent auto upgrade of GPS.
3. Open System App Remover and select "System App" from the menu.
4. Find Google Play Services in the list. It should be marked "Should keep", which is a suggestion from the publisher. Select it and presss "Uninstall". Ignore completion message.
5. Using Settings/Apps, verify that Google Play Services has reverted to the factory-supplied version. It should be <7. "Force Stop", "Uninstall Updates", and "Disable" buttons should no longer be grayed out.
6. Using a root-enabled file manager like ES File Explorer, open \data\app and create two new, empty folders titled com.google.android.gms-1.apk and com.google.android.gms-2.apk. This tricks Google into causing auto updating of your GPS to fail.
7. Reboot device and toggle Airplane Mode off.
At this point, if your GAPPS are all working to your satisfaction, you can stop. Just bear in mind that if you upgrade your GAPPS in the future, they may crash or (more likely) refuse to run because they require a more up-to-date GPS app. Everything worked fine for me, but I decided to bump my GPS version to something closer to 7 as a hedge against planned Google obsolescence.
If you decide to update to something newer than the factory GPS app, note that you need to get an APK compatible with your device. There's an excellent explanation of this on the apkmirror.com site, but unfortunately I can't post the link here. Just Google "apkmirror googleplayservices apk device".
I decided to bump up my GPS to 6.5.87. To upgrade to anything older than the current, poisoned version of GPS, you'll need to do the following:
1. Perform your own research and decide which version of GPS you think will be best for your combination of device and apps. Don't worry about getting it right the first time, you won't be locked down anymore and can upgrade/downgrade GPS easily.
2. Download the appropriate APK from apkmirror.com or the site of your choice.
3. Put your device in Airplane Mode.
4. Open your file manager app, navigate to \data\apps and rename the two dummy folders you created earlier by adding "XX" in front of the name so that they no longer serve their intended purpose.
5. Install the APK you downloaded earlier.
6. Using Settings/Apps, verify that Google Play Services has been upgraded to the version you selected.
7. Open your file manager and rename the two dummy directories, removing the "XX" you added earlier.
8. Reboot device and toggle Airplane Mode off.
9. Enjoy your newly un-shackled Android device!
For what it's worth, my phone had been working perfectly for about 24 hours since this process. I did attempt to update my GMail app to the current version, 5.1.9, which failed because it requires a newer version of GPS. I updated to GMail 5.0.1 instead, which seems to be a good compromise. So there may be some minor tweaking of your GAPPS required, in terms of finding versions that work well for you.
If you have an old phone with limited resources, this should work out really well, because the older versions of GPS take up more less space, and they don't require nearly as much CPU time or data.
Hope this helps. Please share your experiences via replies!
This saved me alot of stress! Thank you dude

Interesting. I don't have a cache\download folder on my OPO, but I have seen automatically downloaded files, like CM patches, in the root of \cache. The same file has been sitting in there for a while. It definitely survives reboots. I don't imagine that it'll go away unless I clear the cache.
The easiest way to verify is to keep an eye on your battery consumption to see how it goes, but in my case, it's much better than it was with the 7-series GPS.

Let's try this
1. First, you must have version 4.8.2 installed (just replace it in /system/app with the new com.android.vending.apk)
2. Download a root service from the store called "Disable service" (again make sure root is installed and the app is given root permission)
3. Now, in the disable service app, navigate to the system app tab and find Google play store. Tap on it and you will get a list of services
4. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck "check Wifi And Update" service.
5. You will see a "please wait" notification, and at the bottom busybox should appear, notifying you that the app was given root access
6. Exit the app and voila! Google play store will never update itself or Google play services ever again (unless you install a new version, in which case you would need to repeat the process)

1. Switch off network connection to prevent unwanted updates.
2. Ensure that Play Store app "Phonesky.apk" is installed as a system app. This should be /system/app/Phonesky.apk or /system/priv-app/Phonesky.apk.
3. Remove possible installed updates of Play Store ( -> Android app settings). Don't remove complete Play Store app.
4. Reset Play Store app, i. e. clear all data of Play Store ( -> Android app settings).
5. Create two folders /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk and /data/app/com.android.vending-2.apk
6. Reboot.
7. Switch on network connection.
8. Start Play Store and disable auto updates...
This trick works fine on my Ascend y550 with stock rom (rooted)

In this way, GMS could be stopped to update cause it doesn't have the permission to modify the folders com.google.android.gms-1.apk. But you can't stop the updating apk files to be downloaded.
On lollipop (5.1.1) Android just scrolls higher number after it.. Fight til .gms-4 and I surrender.. Google...
I was able to get the Uninstall Updates by simply deselecting Android Device Manager as a device administrator.
The issue I have, is that ES File Explorer won't allow me to revert the xx... folder names once I have installed my chosen version of GPS, resulting in a 'com.google.android.gms-1-.apk' file.
I don't really understand as one is an actual file and the others are folders?

I only Created two folders /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk and /data/app/com.android.vending-2.apk without other steps becouse i wanted to keep my existing version of moded play store. After that my Z3 with lolipop 5.1.1 go into bootloop :/ so I guess that doesn't work on my config...
Any other idea of stay forever on current moded play store?

No one?
I think it would have been fair if the OP would have credited the sources where he got to know about the dummy folder "trick", unless it was his own born idea.
I can guess that the sources are these:
[TRICK] How to stop Google Play Store self update - easy!
[TRICK] How to avoid Google Play Service update
On Z3 with lolipop 5.1.1 I got boot loop after creating this folder? Anyone succeed with 5.1.1?
