How to use default S8 weather widget using a 3rd pt launcher - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Themes, Apps, and Mods

I've seen a few people asking about this and decided to play at doing it. After some messing around I've found the following method to work.
First off, you must be rooted. I don't know away around this.
Secondly you will need to download the two files I have linked in this thread and place them in folders of the same name (DO NOT INSTALL THE ACTUAL APKS).
Third, navigate to system > app folder and copy the two folders called "Weather2017" and "WeatherWidget2017" and move them somewhere else.
After moving the 2017 folders replace them with the 2016 folders and reboot
Once you have rebooted navigate back to system > app folder, remove 2016 folders and place the 2017 folders back as they were and reboot again.
When your phone boots back up now you should have access to place the default S8/S8+ weather widget on your screen while using your launcher of choice (I've tested it using Nova but I think it should work with others).
If this helps you please feel free to leave a like!?

Great! Thats why i didnt use nova launcher. Now i will. Great!

If you go into weather settings and hit add icon to app drawer, it will show up in nova widgets!

[Q] Custom launchers can't stay in memory

I don't know if this is normal to Ace nowadays but I just have this problem recently
When I use some custom launchers (Xperia, GO Launcher, ADW, etc.) and opened up some system apps (phone, contacts, and the likes) then try using the Stock task manager.. those launchers are being killed.. leaving the system app / stock launcher intact after I press the back button.
It's just pretty annoying that I still need to press the Home button just to show/revert back to those launchers...
Is this is really a problem and are there any fixes for it?
thanks

Even this seems to kill the launchers.
You may need to select "Keep in memory" or similar in your launcher options.
If you are rooted and have a root file explorer you can make a backup of the system launcher by copying the apk (and dex file if included) to your SD card, then move the app from your preferred launcher to system/app with Rw,R, R permissions and delete the stock launcher from the system/app folder. Then reboot.
Also many launchers have the system persistent option, try enabling it.

Is because the stock task manager is made by Samsung, it doesn't like third party apps.
you could use a different task manager from play store.
I don't use task manager's, android will kill processes when it needs to.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using my hands
Well mate anyway you try, 3rd party launchers will always be killed by task manager. You can't keep them fully in memory. However if you don't like TW launcher, just delete apk and dex from system/app using root explorer and install any other launcher before doing so. It'll never appear again
hmm should I rename the new launcher to the deleted apk?
like GoLauncherAPK.apk to TouchWiz30Launcher.apk?
or just directly move it to the app folder

Bro i already told you that third party launchers will be killed by task manager. Moving them to system, renaming them, nothing would help. They can't be locked in memory unless any developer tries to do so.

[cm9\aokp] No Trebuchet Settings (workaround)

OK so the recent AOKP an (from what I hear) CM9 builds don't have the options to change the trebuchet launcher preferences.
Now I haven't researched why this has changed but I found a quick workaround.
0.) Need to have the Nova launcher installed
1.) Go into your Widgets set the "Activities" widget from nova on to your screen
2.) Scroll down an select Trebuchet then select Preferences.
3.) Click the new Preferences icon an there ya go

Nice workaround - i feel like i'm the only one in this boat as it seems like noone uses trebuchet anymore
I still like it, nice and simple - also has the fade effect when scrolling screens that other launchers don't have
Why not just use Apex ?

Its simple and has the basic options you want a launcher to have auto-rotate,multiple animations, force resize.... I mean really wtf else do you need.
I've stuck with it because I flash like a crack head multiple times a day so the simpler the configuration the better.
I believe I might have an actual fix but I'm mobile an I'll need my lab top... an ya I googled forever an had no luck... kinda like I'm having finding a good example of the pegasusq parameters...

Try this version and let me know if it works. (I'm on CM7.2 so I can't exactly test it out at the moment). It should have the following available when you press menu:
"Wallpaper"
"Manage apps"
"Trebuchet settings
"System settings"
I am like you, I don't care about all the fancy bull**** that nova, apex, and all the other AOSP 4.0 based launchers have. Trebuchet is perfect for me.
Try it out.

Is the menu list in the trebuchet app ? I was going to add the settings option back into the menu when we had this issue on task's AOKP but he fixed the issue since then. although things may have reverted in build 40, im currently in the middle of flashing it.
Just FYI, good old Any Cut also works if you don't want to install a whole other launcher just for the one widget. Add the Any Cut widget, then select Activity, then Preferences.
Also, Any Cut shortcuts can be placed inside folders, unlike regular widgets.
For a laugh, try making a shortcut to the "rocket launcher" activity - not exactly practical, but kind of fun

[Q] How do I remove the google bar from my home screen?

First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.
Ok, what' a "launcher"?

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"
Suggested launcher?

Which one is best/most reliable/free-or-cheap?
If I muck this thing up, Duh Hubby will get really upset!
I know there is/was a list of recommended apps & widgets, but can't find the thread now. Don't know if it mentioned a launcher anyway.
Thanks again!

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth

[Q] 5x6 App Drawer SCH-I545 4.4.2 Rooted

Hi guys this might be a noob question but I am running kitkat on my Galaxy s4 with root access and safestrap. I am trying to get a 5 x 6 app drawer without having to use a different launcher because I like the touchwiz launcher. From the research that I have done Seclauncher3.apk is located under system\priv-app and not under system\apps but all the mods out there point to apps directory. The ones that do point to the right location touchwiz stops responding and so do all the apps. Does any one have any ideas on how to go about this?

Hi hdirani,
I would change your launcher if you would like to do that because most likely if you mess with the touchwiz launcher it can get severely damaged in a matter of seconds. I reccomend Nova Launcher if you would like to have that kind of app drawer though. Messing with TouchWiz can always be damaging to your device and is a unnecessary waste of time to go through its files.
Thank you for the quick response. Is there any way to get scalender and the accuweather widget to work with the nova launcher.

There is a normal widgets menu in the launcher, so you can add those in just like you would in TouchWiz.

Question Missing or hidden features?

I got my Pixel 6 Pro yesterday and opened it up today and a few things initially that are driving me crazy. I cant change the app drawer to 4x5 or 5x5 or the home screen. I found how but the options are not there. Also, how do I get rid of the massive clock on the lock screen to show a normal clock?
Hi @GrandMstrBud
You can change to 5x5 home app grid by
long pressing the screen,
select 'Wallpaper and Style',
scroll down and select App Grid - to select your choice
Just to confirm I have the Pixel 6 (non pro)

The only fix for this for now is to have a persistent notification running. That will reduce the clock size and move the clock to the upper left corner. I use Today Weather for that. The Persistent Notifications app works too.
Hopefully Google will add the option to resize the lockscreen clock in a future update. I hate it too.

Myself and my uncle had the same issues with our P6P. The option to change the grid didnt show up. We discovered that for some reason Nova launcher was messing with this option. Deleting Nova from the phone and rebooting and this option should appear. Not sure why this is happening with Nova installed.

Strange, I do have the option. It's not just that you didn't scroll down?
When I got the Pixel 6, that option wasn't there either. I checked again the next day and only then did I find it. I think I started the device once in between.
Edit:
As mentioned before: I had Nova installed on an other device, which was transferred to Pixel 6. Maybe I fixed it with deleting Nova.
Maybe I got it after the november update was installed.
I don't have/cannot find the NFC quick settings switch....
