What have you found that's "missing" from S9/S9+ from previous Galaxies? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

In moving from my Verizon S8+ to my unlocked S9+, I've noticed a few features missing between the two. Has anyone noticed other things that are missing or ways around these?
Messages app no longer can set the background image. On the S8, I could choose a background color or image in the messaging app, but the option appears to be gone. Am I missing it or did they remove it for some reason?
In contacts, I used to be able to set a custom ringtone and messaging noise for each person. Now, it seems all I can set is ringtone. The ability to customize their messaging sound seems to have vanished.
Settings "normal" listing is missing. On the S8, you could choose between Simplified List and a normal list for the way the Settings were presented. Bixby required the simplified list which is why I suspect they removed the more organized look. Is the option still there somewhere? I hate the simplified list and not having the ability to put the shortcuts to important stuff at the top of the list. (And no, I'm not talking about the swipe down quick list of settings.)
Always on Display background options. There used to be patterns or subtle colors you could easily choose for any of the built in clock faces in the Always on Display options. Now it seems all you can choose is text color or go out to the theme store to choose some obnoxious themed clock. Is the option buried or gone?
Anyone notice any other little/big things that seem to have gone missing in the S9/S9+?

Taking a picture with both phones, independently of lighting conditions, I noticed that with the s8+ you can zoom in the saved picture considerably more. Am I missing something?

Can't figure out any way to add my own notification sounds. In prior Android phones (including Samsung) adding them to a folder called Notifications would make them available in the list of sounds. That no longer seems to work. Combined with the inability to set a sender specific notification tone in Messages, this may be enough to make me return the phone. I mean, seriously, this capability has existed since my first Android phone.

That's odd. I have a folder full of Notification sounds I transferred from my S8 and they all show up. Plus, there's a little + Add button at the top right when selecting a notification or ringtone so you can add a file from your device.

They used to live in:
[internal or external sdcard]/Media/Alarms

[internal or external sdcard]/Media/Ringtones
They haven't lived there in some time. They live in:

I've got tons of old notification sounds and ringtones loaded into my S9+ just fine.
In fact, there's even an Add button at the top of the sound chooser. I haven't clicked it, but presumably you can browse your device for more sounds.

[Q] Can you help me understanding how Android notification system works?

Hi, I just switched completely from iOS to Android after I while I used an iPhone and a Nexus 7 together. Now I replaced the iPhone with a Samsung Galaxy S4.
I'm pretty happy, but there are a couple of things I still completely grasp about how Android notifications work.
My first issue is related to *blocking mode* and Whatsapp. I have the same issue reported in this discussion.
It seems that the app can bypass Android notification system and relies on something else. Is that true? How can that happen?
I have another concern related to the use of vibration when sound is turned on. It seems that the system-wide settings refers only to phone calls, while for other notifications I have to rely on app-specific settings. Am I correct?
Taking for example facebook app, what would happen if I disable vibration and put the phone in silent mode? Will it vibrate?
Finally, I'd like to have a iOS-like notification list on the lock screen. So far I managed to get it for some applications (Messages, Whatsapp), but I'd really like to have some system-wide properties.
Generally speaking, can you please give me a link to Android documentation explaining what aspects of notifications it manages system-wide and what is responsibility of each application?
I'd really like to see as much as possible managed by the operating system, but from what I am experiencing it seems that it is exactly the other way round with a lot of settings left to the applications.
Blocking mode is a Samsung feature AFAIK. Maybe WhatsApp is using the media channel for notifications instead of the notifications channel? Not sure.

Take a look at DashClock with one of the many extensions (e.g. AnyDash), NiLS Notifications Lock Screen, or any similar widget.
There's also Floating Notifications, which can show you (bubbles of) your notifications on your lockscreen.
Thanks for the links and for the hypothesis on Whatsapp notifications.
It seems that I have to choose either to have the pattern lock or to add multiple widgets. Am I right?
Is there any way to have both notifications and pattern lock?
I'm afraid pattern lock is again a Samsung specific feature so I'm a concerned about possible integration issues with other widgets.
What about the other question about system-wide vs per-app settings?

Samsung disabled widgets with the secure lockscreen for some reason. There's an Xposed module to re-enable it, but you need the Xposed framework (and root).
I'm not sure about the vibration question.
My device is still not-rooted and I am not very keen on rooting.
I did some research and I found Popup Notifier (Sorry but I still can't post links to external websites) that seems what I need.
I'm going to try it and I'll let you know how it works.

Unfortunately it Popup Notifier is not what I was looking for. I'd like more to have an iOS-like list of notifications rather than popups.
It also felt a bit too hackish that I had to disable text to speech service and enable the app's accessibility service.
I have the feeling that they're misusing accessibility features as a workaround to access notification information.
I see that there are custom lockers. Is it possible to install them without rooting the device? If I install one of them would I be able to setup notifications as I like, add the pattern widget and leave the rest of the system as it is?

All applications need Accessibility to get the notifications' content, prior to Android 4.3, AFAIK. Or root.

Did 4.3 introduce new APIs to let applications access notifications?
Is there any new app that already uses them? I'd like to try them on my Nexus 7 and then use one also on my S4 once Samsung releases the updated version of the system.

Applications can now use notification listeners, which allow them to detect new notifications (and when they're cleared) from an app. I think Floating Notifications uses it if you're on 4.3, but it's not exactly what you want.
Yes,unfortunately it's not what I'm looking for. I'll keep checking. I hope new app relying on the new features will be published soon

I came across a few DashClock extensions which do that, although for specific apps. You might want to try a few and see if this is what you want.

[MOD][XPOSED] TickerToast BETA! Turns toasts into notifications in the status bar.

I am done with this. Module discontinued. I'm done fighting with that icon.
This was initially a request from http://www.reddit.com/user/Angelic276 on reddit. I decided it would be neat so put some time into it. Please note this is still quite buggy and the beta isn't up there just cause it sounds cool. Honestly, this was done as an experiment, and I don't think it will ever be perfect.
Doesn't work:
-Icon
-Sometimes toasts that are in a long "line up" will be delayed, this usually occurs after three or more toasts in succession.
-Code sucks
-?
All the goodies can be found on the repo (source, download, etc.): http://repo.xposed.info/module/ryebread761.tickertoast
Exactly what I was looking for. Great job.
This actually sounds like a good mod. I'd like to see it grow :good:
Seems to work pretty well. I dont really mind toasts, personally, I'd rather somehow disable tickers in various apps (Is this possible?)
Anyway... one app that it didnt work with was "Rescan SD Card". It simply crashes the app, which is an app that only has two toast msgs as 'interface'.
Just so you could fix the bug easier... unless I'm alone with this.
I'm not quite sure I understand why toast notifications became popular when notifications are the standard. I hate feeling like I have to read it fast or I'm going to miss something important. If you want to show a brief message that removes automatically, just cancel the notification bar one.
There always has to be something in an OS that causes anxiety, I swear its like a OS rule that all systems have.

Like, for example, if someone writes me on Skype, it will show a ticker of the name and msg of the sender. I'd rather just it shows the skype "new message" notification icon. Some apps have a "privacy" option - alot dont. Not that I've any idea whether or not this is something that could be done with xposed, it was just a thought... a bit offtopic too, I'm afraid

Ah, that does sound extremely annoying and breaks with normal Android behavior. May I could recommend a replacement via Tasker where it detects Skype message and creates a fake one of its own.

Hard to expect Microsoft to do anything right. Their whole app is a mess but sadly they make sure to keep any alternative clients from existing or working properly.
The tasker alternative seems like a good idea! Can you point me in a direction on a guide how to do this? (I dont wanna keep the offtopic going in poor Ryebread's thread )

I figured it would be a simple search, but this is the best I could find to get you started: http://androidforums.com/tasker/648438-tasker-can-not-detect-gmail-notifications-s3.html
Idea would be to detect notification, then see if detection still works after blocking the notification using Gravity Box's notification block feature. I know blocked notifications still show up in the OS notification queue when blocked on my Kit Kat ROM. Then create a notification from tasker that has Skype's icon and only launches the Skype app.

What the hell!?! I just saw my first clickable toast from the Gmail app... "Show new email from XDA..." which showed up when a thread subscribe email arrived while I was reading a message.
Really google, what is wrong with you. Now toasts are not toasts, stay on screen, and are clickable? Just show a freaking notification or something native to the app. I stared at it for a few seconds waiting to know what the crap was going on.
OP: sorry for pooping on your thread. Best of luck to you, nuke all the toasts.
On my S4, the notification showed for about as long as a toast, and then it disappeared on its own.
Ya, that's supposed to happen. Do you like that or should I add an option to have the notification stay?

The problem with toasts is that the user can miss them, so I assumed your app would make the toasts appear as notifications and linger until the user dismisses them. I guess the idea behind your app is, basically, to put the toast at the top of the phone so that the user doesn't obscure it with his own fingers while doing other stuff. But since we now have Burnt Toast and Buttered Toast, toasts have become more visible, so I actually find a brief display in the status bar easier to miss than a Burnt and Buttered toast.
In that case, yes, I would like the option to have toasts get converted to notifications so that they remain until manually dismissed. That way, you never have to worry about missing a toast if you look away from your phone. As a further refinement, the user could choose on a per app basis whether that app's toasts will be 1) left as system default-style toasts, 2) appear briefly in the status bar, or 3) get converted to a notification that the user has to manually clear.
Love it, i really hate toasts because they block my view and are annoying.
Would be great if you get the icons to work!

There is 2 apps in xposed to control toast. Untoaster stops toasts and enhanced toast which might be exactly what you are looking for blocks certain unwanted toasts.
Nice module. This is exactly what I was looking for. It would be perfect if you could get the icons to work. It would also be nice for some users to have the option to turn toasts into notifications. Thanx for sharing this.

I didn't want it to die this way either. There became a point though where the code was so bad, that doing anything with this felt like a fight. This is something I did in my free time for fun. I usually enjoy coding, and making modules, but this one became more and more of a chore. As such, I decided to end development and move on.

[MODS] Remove Carrier Labels and Precise Animation Scales

I recently read about the use of RRO theming for the s8, so I took some practice and made this.
This mod basically hides the carrier label (AT&T, Verizon, etc...) from the status bar on the lockscreen and in the notification center (bottom).
You can see in both attached photos there is no carrier in the top left status bar and bottom of notification center.

Nice, @Tigerhoods sent me this and is better than what I was currently doing. I just added .27 and .75 animation scales. I like what you have done more. We have both been putting our heads together and see all what other kids we can come up with. I am currently trying to get access for those of us who are carrier decided to remove the ability to display the weather icon on the lockscreen. I can add the access to a different XML, but because the original XML does not show the fragment, I can't currently get it to work. I asked in the Q&A thread if anyone had the the name of the shortcut.
If you want we need to get a telegram group together and see what all we can come up with. I currently have everything I have done on my git.
I made an oem unlock switch show up in a different area hoping to help out with root, but there is more that the Java files do when the switch is turned on than just a simple switch making a system broadcast.

Then you are good to go since carrier icons are gone. If you're wanting to uninstall it look for com.galaxycarrierhider.

I have sungstratum but no themees installed and I have Custom Navigation Bar but it is turned off
I just uninstalled substratum/Samsung add-on, custom navbar, and anything else that might interfere. Even after I uninstall this app, the quick settings do not reappear
Very nice! Works like a charm.

Hey guys, I live in China and I just got one from their flagship store in Shanghai, must say it's indeed a very impressive phone but only on hardware perspective, as for the software, nah.
More details will be available once I have time to explore, main phone still will be Galaxy S8 and iPhone X at this moment

I would say it's okay for the camera but not the best, its cheaper sibling Vivo Nex has better image quality compared with.
The speaker is mono unfortunately, I think they don't have enough space to fit a large audo component into that tiny upper frame, a bit sad.
Battery is above the average, will do a intensive battery consumption test once I have time.:fingers-crossed:

does anybody know a way how to force the phone to use a launcher when pressing the home button?
Color OS 5.1 is not having a launcher/homescreen option in the default app manager

So far the only way is to get adb working
Type
Adb shell (hit enter)
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.oppo.launcher (hit enter)
However when you swipe up from center it gives you a blank screen. You then have to hit lock screen or drag up from center and hold to show recents then you can drag up from center and it will go to your launcher.
Before using the command above make sure you already have the 3rd party launcher installed
Got one from China, using in Canada right now
Google Assistance isnt working for me (cannot trigger via voice or home button)
Android Auto is not working
Have trouble to disable voicemail notification, Pixel 2 can disable it via some trick but not working with Find X
LTE band works great and download/upload speed is faster than my Pixel 2 (Telus+Freedom Mobile)
URL Links that require to open Google Play wont work, it will open the built-in broswer even I switch the default browser to Chrome, it will not open google play directly
Same idea for google calendar and other google deep intergrated services/app
Need International ROM!!!

My OFX should be arriving any minute now....
Is there an option in the settings to go without a lockscreen?
I don't use a lock screen of any sort, I'll be giving this app a shot (with & without a lock screen) to see what, if any, effect it has, with both swipe gestures & nav buttons.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jraf.android.nolock
I realize most people use a lockscreen but, thought some may be willing to go without one if, in exchange, you may be able to skip a couple of swipes/etc... in the process.

I don't see a option for that, but you might be able to delete it. I'm not going to try that one.
Yep, never use a lockscreen and go straight to the GUI from the fingerprint scanner or face unlock, positively hate the extra step. It's a key issue for me so I'm counting on you folks getting it resolved.

Found the setting to turn off lockscreen, but,at least for now,it comes at a price:
The good news: Look no further than developer options,it's the 2nd option.
The not so good: You're stuck with the yellow warning background in the status bar
The background color could be disabled on the VIVO NEX by killing the VIVO Services app,at least until the next reboot, not the best option, but,I could live with it.
Perhaps the OPPO equivalent, whatever that .apk is named, will serve us the same result,I'll be spending the better part of the evening trying out different apps.........

How do you like this device compared to the nex?

Great answer to wide screen

https://blog.tmyt.jp/entry/2019/12/13/225204
You can switch to widescreen all apps
It is available from the Play Store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.refy.android.g8x.widemode
The weak point of G8X is that only limited apps can be set to Wide mode.
However, this tool will allow any app to be in Wide mode.
Wide mode is available for anything such as Kindle, Google Maps, Youtube, MX Player.
By calling from QuickSettings Tile, the activity displayed on the main screen is set to Wide mode.

Hello,
thanks! I am just installing it!
Game changer! Completely transformative for productivity uses--allows landscape tablet use for gdocs, word, excel, OneNote, calendar. Gets the phone significantly closer to achieving its potential. Fingers crossed LG will enable this in more elegant fashion (e.g., allow it to stay in widescreen mode between usages and apps so that you don't have to keep turning this on).
Thank you so much! It works exactly as I hoped this device did straight out of the box.
I cant seem to get it to work for some reason.
What i done is,after adding the icon to the drop down quick settings, i open the app on the main screen the switch on wide mode from the drop down menu. My dual screen is on but becomes blank.

Hopefully LG will adjust the UI scaling and look to work best with hinge, rounded corners, hinge segmentation, angled view (like book handling or laptop standing), different screen size (v50). Pitch black dark mode will work great for more seamless coherent look

Harys Viewty:
What about opening third party app launcher
And what about dedicated apps with different view dual screen? Can you force it to be bigger? Like gallery, camera,
I also would like to see how the scaling looks like on lg stock apps (notes, calender) & third party apps (Gmail, Microsoft, games, Google news, Instagram, YouTube)
The problem with foldables is they look like a giant phone. Not like tablet
Please guys share more screenshots, it's a great main selling point

What about dpi tweaking
This app is indeed awesome and it makes you wonder why LG did not come up with this.
But the giant black divider is really annoying. It makes me want a ZTE Axon M with updated specs (larger screens, latest Snapdragon, dual SIM, OLED, faster storage, etc.). Basically a Microsoft Duo without the ridiculous wait and price. I can imagine a Chinese manufacturer could bring this to market a lot quicker and for a lot less money than Microsoft.

All I have to say is WOW! Great job on the app! I don't know why LG didn't build this functionality in the first place. You sir, have saved the day!
I believe it's an LG internal beta test app like Wizlock. It will become an official new feature

Thanks for the reply! I don't understand, I also have a German device. The program is installed but the Wide Mode icon does not appear (if I pull down the status bar) Do I need to do anything else? (The two displays are in sync of course)
Correction! Works I found the icon in the edit menu. Sensational, I don't understand why LG doesn't include it in the sidebar in the floating dual display setup.

I noticed the G8X widescreen app posted an update that includes a tasker plugin. I've created a new profile that with the following triggers:
* app switch, and
* running selected apps (e.g., gmail, word)
that launch a task that includes:
* force reverse landscape orientation, and
* launch G8X widescreen plugin.
So far so good. I'm just looking for a way to maintain the widescreen automatically for the activities that automatically switch out of widescreen, e.g., hitting the reply button in gmail.
The tasker plugin functionality is another huge leap forward.
